A new near-infrared fluorescent probe 1 based on the IR 780 skeleton was designed, synthesized and structurally characterized for the development of a chemosensor. UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic studies show that probe 1 exhibits a high selectivity and sensitivity towards iridium(III) in an EtOH/H2O (1:4, v/v, pH 7.4, HEPES buffer, 1 mM) solution by forming a 1:1 complex with iridium(III). Experimental results further demonstrate that the probe 1–iridium(III) complex also has excellent application for the highly selective detection of glutathione.

A rhodamine B-based sensor consisting of two rhodamine B moieties linked to the two amine sides of a 4,13-diaza-18-crown-6 ether was synthesized as a highly sensitive fluorescent probe for monitoring Cr3+ in a MeOH–H2O (3 : 2, v/v, pH 7.2) solution and in living cells.

A novel class of H3 receptor antagonists, XB-1 analogues based on benzophenone or oxydibenzene scaffolds were synthesized, and their biological activities were evaluated to determine their in vitro neuroprotective effects against Aβ25–35-induced damage in primary cortical neurons and against glutamate-induced neuronal injury in primary cerebellar granule neurons. The results indicated that all of the tested analogues displayed neuroprotective activity at 0.1 μM or 1 μM. These findings may provide new insights into the development of novel promising H3 receptor antagonists with potential neuroprotective activity.

The synthesis and characterization of a novel Rhodamine B [2]rotaxane is described. This species contains dibenzyl-24-crown-8 (DB24C8) as a wheel, which is threaded onto a sec-ammonium-containing axle. The axle has a Rhodamine B unit and a 2,2-diphenylethanamine unit as two bulky terminal stoppers to prevent unthreading.
