Abstract

Excessive pesticide residues are a serious problem faced by food regulatory authorities, suppliers, and consumers. To assist with this challenge, this work aimed to develop a method of detecting and classifying pesticide residue on fruit samples using an electronic nose, through the application of three different data-recognition algorithms. The apple samples carried various concentrations of two known pesticides, namely cypermethrin and chlorpyrifos. Data collection was performed using a PEN3 electronic nose equipped with 10 metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors. In order to classify and analyze these pesticide residues on the apple samples, principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and support vector machine (SVM) results were combined with sensor output responses to realize MOS sensor array data visualization. The results indicated that all three data-recognition algorithms accurately identified the pesticide residues in the apple samples, with the PCA algorithm exhibiting the best classification and discrimination ability. Consequently, this work has shown that the MOS electronic nose, in combination with data-recognition algorithms, can provide support for the rapid and non-destructive identification of pesticide residues in fruits and can provide an effective tool for the detection of pesticide residues in agricultural products.

Abstract

Liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry has been used as metabolomics profiling tool to discover and identify the metabolites in metabolic diseases. Osteoporosis (OP) syndrome is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by bone mass reduction and changes in bone microstructure. Psoralea corylifolia Linn. seeds (PCS) have a therapeutic effect on osteoporosis, but their action mechanism and therapeutic target are still unclear. This study aims to explore the metabolic changes of the urine profile in glucocorticoid-induced OP model rats and the therapeutic effect of PCS. High-throughput metabolomics based on the liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry and multivariate data analysis were used to analyze the urine metabolites. The results showed that has an obvious separation between model and control groups. OPLS-DA was used to further analyze and discover substances that contributed to the separation. 42 potential biomarkers and 12 related metabolic pathways were identified in combination with network databases. After the intervention of PCS, 24 biomarkers were significantly regulated, mainly with glycone, serine and threonine metabolism, glutathione metabolism and purine metabolism and other metabolic pathways are related and discovered. This study has proved that PCS has therapeutic effect against OP by regulating that metabolic pathways disturbed in the OP. It provided a basis for the research and future development of new drugs for OP treatment.

Abstract

We have synthesized a series of transition metal compounds [M(L)2(H2O)2] (M = Co (1), Ni (2), and Cu (3)) by using the 4-amino-1,2,4-triazole Schiff-base ligand via the hydrothermal methods. They are all mononuclear compounds with the octahedral geometry. Direct-current magnetic and HF-EPR measurements were combined to reveal the negative D values (–28.78 cm−1, –10.79 cm−1) of complexes 1 and 2, showing the easy-axis magnetic anisotropies of compounds 1 and 2. Applying a dc field of 800 Oe at 2.0 K, the slow magnetic relaxation effects were observed in compound 1, which is a remarkable feature of single-ion magnets.

39. Manganese vacancies and tunnel pillars synergistically improve the electrochemical performance of MnO 2 in aqueous Zn ion batteries.

Abstract

High-oxidation niobium was used for the first time in manganese dioxide cation doping to reduce the diffusion resistance of zinc ions, in order to improve its kinetic and electrochemical properties. The results show that using a simple hydrothermal process, all niobium ions were doped into the manganese dioxide lattice. As niobium(v) was incorporated into the [2 × 2] tunnel of α-MnO 2 , it induced manganese vacancies, which reduced the diffusion resistance of Zn 2+ in manganese dioxide, improving the migration kinetics. It acted as a tunnel pillar, avoiding the collapse of the tunnel structure during the repeated insertion/extraction of the Zn 2+ process, and prevented a rapid degradation of the cycling performance. In particular, the sample with the Nb/Mn molar ratio of 0.003 exhibited the best kinetic reversibility and rate performance. After 400 cycles at 1C, the capacity retention of Nb-doped MnO 2 significantly increased to 89%, which was only 55% for the undoped sample. 40. Raspberry-like Pd 3 Pb alloy nanoparticles: superior electrocatalytic activity for ethylene glycol and glycerol oxidation.

Abstract

Pd 3 Pb catalysts are one of the state-of-the-art catalysts for the electrooxidation of alcohols. Herein, raspberry-like Pd 3 Pb catalysts are synthesized via a simple method. The materials are characterized using various physical techniques. The electrocatalytic behaviors of the products towards the oxidation of ethylene glycol and glycerol are investigated. Electrochemical results show that the raspberry-like Pd 3 Pb nanostructure produces excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability towards the electrooxidation of ethylene glycol and glycerol in alkaline media, which endows the prepared nanostructure with promising potential in applications like fuel cells., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

41. Discovery of dihydrooxazolo[2,3- a ]isoquinoliniums as highly specific inhibitors of hCE2.

Abstract

Human carboxylesterase 2 (hCE2) is one of the most abundant esterases distributed in human small intestine and colon, which participates in the hydrolysis of a variety of ester-bearing drugs and thereby affects the efficacy of these drugs. Herein, a new compound (23o) with a novel skeleton of dihydrooxazolo[2,3- a ]isoquinolinium has been discovered with strong inhibition on hCE2 (IC 50 = 1.19 μM, K i = 0.84 μM) and more than 83.89 fold selectivity over hCE1 (IC 50 > 100 μM). Furthermore, 23o can inhibit hCE2 activity in living HepG2 cells with the IC 50 value of 2.29 μM, indicating that this compound has remarkable cell-membrane permeability and is capable for inhibiting intracellular hCE2. The SAR (structure-activity relationship) analysis and molecular docking results demonstrate that the novel skeleton of oxazolinium is essential for hCEs inhibitory activity and the benzyloxy moiety mainly contributes to the selectivity of hCE2 over hCE1., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

42. Reduced graphene oxide-mediated synthesis of Mn 3 O 4 nanomaterials for an asymmetric supercapacitor cell.

Abstract

Herein, Mn 3 O 4 /reduced graphene oxide composites are prepared via a facile solution-phase method for supercapacitor application. Transmission electron microscopy results reveal the uniform distribution of Mn 3 O 4 nanoparticles on graphene layers. The morphology of the Mn 3 O 4 nanomaterial is changed by introducing the reduced graphene oxide during the preparation process. An asymmetric supercapacitor cell based on the Mn 3 O 4 /reduced graphene oxide composite with the weight ratio of 1 : 1 exhibits relatively superior charge storage properties with higher specific capacitance and larger energy density compared with those of pure reduced graphene oxide or Mn 3 O 4 .
