1H NMR method showed that in systems based on triisobutylaluminum (TIBA) and triphenylcyclopropenylium [Ph3C3]+[B(C6F5)4]–(CPB) or triphenylmethylium [Ph3C]+[B(C6F5)4]–(TB) perfluorophenylborates in a toluene–dichloromethane mixture the Friedel–Crafts process occurs with the formation of ditolylmethane (DTM) accompanied by the complete decomposition of TIBA to form isobutane. 19F NMR spectroscopy showed that the [B(C6F5)4]–anion decomposes in the systems to form B(C6F5)3 and HC6F5. The short-living [AlBu2 i]+ cation formed in the reaction of perfluorophenylborates with TIBA is assumed to be the species initiating the process. It has been shown that CPB is less reactive than TB. The addition of a stoichiometric amount of Ph2CCpFluHfMe2 exerts no effect on the process with the CPB-containing system but inhibits the reaction in the case of TB.

Isobutylalumoxanes of different composition were synthesized by the hydrolysis of triisobutylaluminum (TIBA) with crystalline hydrate CuSO4·5H2O and water taken as cooled ice or as vapor. The composition of the formed alumoxanes and the degree of water participation in their formation was monitored by 1H NMR. The hydrolysis of TIBA on CuSO4·5H2O is rather selective method of synthesis of alumoxanes. The synthesized alumoxanes were used for the activation of dimethylated zirconocenes rac-Me2Si(2-Me,4-PhInd)2ZrMe2 and rac-Et(2-MeInd)2ZrMe2 in propylene polymerization at the molar ratios Al/Zr = 50–750. It was concluded that the hydrolysis afforded several products with different structures and different activating ability. The systems with oligomeric forms of isobutylalumoxanes, especially those obtained by TIBA hydrolysis with water, showed the highest activity.

Mixed salts (NH4)2SO4·2NH4NO3 (1) and (NH4)2SO4·3NH4NO3 (2) were synthesized and studied by X-ray diffraction analysis. The unit cell parameters of these salts were determined and their crystal structures were solved. The thermal stability of the salts was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The temperatures and enthalpies of incongruent melting of compounds 1 and 2 were determined. The enthalpies of formation from the constituent salts were estimated.

The transformations of bis[N-(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)-2,3,5,6-tetrafluoroanilinato]-titanium(iv) dichloride (L2TiCl2) occurring in toluene under the action of methylalumoxane (MAO) were studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The commercially available MAO containing trimethylaluminum (AlMe3) and MAO free of AlMe3 (the so called “dry” MAO) were used. The catalytic transformations of hex-1-ene involving the systems L2TiCl2-MAO were studied. We proposed the structures of the cationic titanium complexes formed in the absence and in the presence of hex-1-ene under the action of MAO. In the absence of olefin, neutral and cationic titanium complexes are decomposed under the action of AlMe3 according to the exchange reaction of the complex ligand with the methyl groups of AlMe3 to form LAlMe2. The neutral complexes react considerably faster than the cationic ones. In the presence of olefin, decomposition of complexes under the action of AlMe3 is suppressed. The titanium complex activated by “dry” MAO isomerizes hex-1-ene to hex-2-ene. In the presence of large amounts of TMA (commercial MAO), this reaction does not take place.

Quantitative characteristics of changes in the energy of charge transfer from π-bonded ligands to metal are presented for the series of structurally similar ansa-metallocene complexes of IVB Group elements. The changes are caused by the solvation effect, replacement of σ-bonded chlorine ligands by methyl groups and of bridging ethylene groups by dimethylsilylene moieties, introduction of the methyl substituent into position 2 and phenyl substituent into position 4 of the indenyl system, variation of the transition metal in metallocene, and formation of complexes with polymethylalumoxane (MAO) at different AlMAO/Zr ratios. These effects are found to be additive.

The electrochemical oxidation of a number of aminomethylated calix[4]resorcinarenes (AMC) with different substituents at the nitrogen atom and the kinetics of nucleophilic substitution reactions of these compounds with p-nitrophenyl bis(chloromethyl)phosphinate were studied. The reactivity of the ionic associates of AMC in the nucleophilic substitution and the behavior of AMC in electrooxidation are determined by the same factors, namely, the amino-group basicity and the nature of the substituents at the nitrogen atom. These factors influence the ratio of the zwitter-ionic and anionic forms of AMC.

The amphiphilic calix[4]resorcinolarenes, aminomethylated calix[4]resorcinolarenes, o-aminomethylphenols, and their quaternary derivatives in water—dimethylformamide media (10—75 vol.% DMF) form aggregates, which catalyze the hydrolysis of phosphonous esters. The ability to self-association and the catalytic activity of the aggregates depend on the hydrophobicity of the amphiphilic compound, the pH of solution, and the content of DMF.

The reaction kinetics of aminomethylated calix[4]resorcinolarenes (AMC) withp-nitrophenyl esters of phosphorus acids (EPA) in a water—DMF solution (30 vol.% DMF) was studied by spectrophotometry and31P NMR spectroscopy in the presence and absence of the nonionic surfactant Triton X-100. The AMC form aggregates of micellar and nonmicellar types and are the catalysts for EPA hydrolysis. The catalytic activity of the aggregates depends on their structure, pH of the medium, and the nature of the solvent.

The catalytic properties of the complexes (RCp)2ZrCl2 (R=H, Me, Pri, Bun, Bui, Me3Si,cyclo-C6H11), and Me2SiCp*NBuiZrCl2 (Cp*=C5(CH3)4) combined with the AlBui 3−CPh3B(C6F5)4 cocatalyst in ethylene polymerization were studied. The specific activity of the substituted bis-cyclopentadienyl complexes decreases in the sequence: Me>Pri>Bun>Bui>Me3Si>cyclo-C6H11, which corresponds to the activity sequence for these complexes activated by polymethylaluminoxane (MAO) but is 4–20 times lower in absolute value. Comparison of the polyethylene samples obtained in the presence of the same complexes with MAO and AlBui 3−CPh3B(C6F5)4 cocatalysts showed that polyethylene with much higher molecular mass, melting point, and crystallinity is formed in the presence of the ternary catalytic systems, and this indicates a different nature of the active sites of the catalytic systems. The effective activation energy of polymerization (≈3.6 kcal mol−1), first order with respect to monomer and ≈0.4 order with respect to organoaluminum component, was found for the (PriCo)2ZrCl2−AlBui 3−CPh3B(C6F5)4 catalytic system. It was proposed on the basis of the kinetic data that AliBu3 enters into the composition of the active site to form a bridged heteronuclear cationic complex.

Reduction of the bent-sandwich [·5-(Ph)Ind]2HfCl2 complex (1) (where (Ph) Ind is the 2-phenylindenyl anion) in a THF medium was studied by low-temperature cyclic voltammetry. Complex1 is stable in THF at a temperature lower than −50°C and undergoes reversible one-electron reduction to radical anion1 . −. Further one-electron reduction of1 . − to dianion1 2− is accompanied by the elimination of two Cl− ions to form the bisindenyl sandwich [·5-(Ph)Ind]2Hf complex (2). This complex can undergo reversible one-electron reduction to the corresponding radical anion2 . −, which is stable within the cyclic voltammetry time scale. AtT=−30°C in a THF solution, complex1 was reduced to a diamagnetic (apparently, binuclear) HfIII complex, which was characterized by cyclic voltammetry. Synthesis and the crystal structure of complex1 are reported.

Redox reactions of the sandwich jn5-(Ph)Ind]2Ni complex (1) (where (Ph)Ind is the 2-plrenylindenyl anion) in CH2CI2 and of the bent-sandwich (η5-(Plr)Ind]2ZrCl2 complex (2) in THF have been studied by low-temperature cyclic voltammetry. Complex ( undergoes quasi-reversible two-step oxidation to cation i+ and dication 12+, which are stable at room temperature within the cyclic voltammetry time scale. Two-electron reduction of complex 1 is irreversible up to -50 °C, and this process is accompanied by destruction of the sandwich structure of the complex. Redaction of complex 2 is described by the conventional scheme for bent-sandwich complexes. According to this scheme, further one-electron reduction of radical anion 2′- generates dianion 22−, which eliminates two CI− ions to afford bisindcnyl sandwich complex (η5-(Ph)lnd]2Zr (3). This complex is stable at T < -45 °C within the cyclic voltammetry time scale and is capable of undergoing one-electron reduction to the corresponding radical anion 3-. Synthesis and crystal structures of complexes 1 and 2 are reported.

The reduction in THF and oxidation in CH2Cl2 of the bent-sandwich complex (η5-lnd)2ZrMe2 (1) (Ind=C9H7, indenyl) were studied by cyclic voltammetry. Complex1 in THF undergoes one-electron reduction to radical anion1 −, which partially decomposes with the liberation of the Ind− anion. Even at −45°C the one-electron oxidation leads to the formation of an unstable 15-electron radical cation undergoing fast heterolytic decomposition to the Me• radical and (η5-lnd)2ZrMe2 cation, which is the key reaction center in the catalytic polymerization of olefins. Comparative analysis of electron-transfer-induced transformations of bent-sandwich dimethyl and dichloride zirconocenes of the general formula L2ZrX2 (L=η5-lnd, η5-Cp: X=Xl, Me) was performed.
