Abstract

Prospective and longitudinal assessment of depressive, positive, and negative symptoms were performed on 86 newly admitted schizophrenic patients. The improvement of depressive symptoms was significantly correlated with the improvement in positive symptoms, but did not correlate with the improvement in negative symptoms. However, depressive symptoms were heterogeneous. Principal components analysis was used to subdivide depressive symptoms into five factors. The improvement of the depression-anxiety factor was significantly associated with improvement of positive symptoms. On the other hand, improvement of negative symptoms was significantly related to that of the reduced activity factor. The change in hypochondriasis had a significant positive correlation with the change in positive symptoms and had a significant negative correlation with the change in negative symptoms. Changes in the other factors of depressive symptoms did not appear to be associated with changes in positive or negative symptoms. The present findings suggest that the various depressive symptoms associated with acute schizophrenia may have different pathophysiological origins.

Abstract

Eight acutely ill deluded schizophrenic patients were compared with eight matched recovered patients on an associative learning task. Ten word pair associations were presented over five trials. Subsequently the subjects were presented with ten novel pairings over three trials, one word from the first pair associated with a new partner. Recovered patients performed better than acutely ill patients on both stages of the task. This result does not support the neuropsychological model of Gray et al. (1991) which predicts that acute schizophrenia is characterised by a weakening of the effect of previous experience on new learning.

Abstract

Production of interferon (IFN)-alpha and -gamma by leukocytes from 34 patients with acute schizophrenia and 34 controls was measured before and after 5-6 weeks of antipsychotic treatment by using Sendai virus as IFN-alpha inducer and lentil lectin as inducer for IFN-gamma production. The schizophrenia series included 13 first admission patients (mean duration of illness 1.1 years) and 21 re-entry patients (mean duration of illness 10.1 years). Of the total series 23 were drug-free at the time of pretreatment sampling. In all subgroups the schizophrenic patients produced less IFNs than healthy controls although the differences reached statistical significance only in the total group of schizophrenic patients with regard to production of IFN-alpha. The antipsychotic drug treatment did not have an effect on IFN production. The techniques used, the influence of genetic factors, and eventual clinical implications are discussed.
