The article presents the author's instructional design that challenged students to use universal images to communicate across cultural and linguistic boundaries. A fictional letter requesting for a playground equipment instruction manual from a friend who lives in Thailand was created and a set of playground equipment was given to the children. Information on the restriction for speaking English while doing the project and how the children generate their solutions is provided.

An interview with Kirsten Smith, 2007 Davis Digital Storytelling Challenge winner in the U.S., is presented. When asked about her teaching environment, she answered that she works in a public high school with about 3,000 students at 9-12 grades. She shared that the challenge is a truly meaningful and educational experience for her students. She noted that the provided lessons and resources were helpful in doing the project.
