Ecological extinction caused by overfishing precedes all other pervasive human disturbance to coastal ecosystems, including pollution, degradation of water quality, and anthropogenic climate change. Historical abundances of large consumer species were fantastically large in comparison with recent observations. Paleoecological, archaeological, and historical data show that time lags of decades to centuries occurred between the onset of overfishing and consequent changes in ecological communities, because unfished species of similar trophic level assumed the ecological roles of overfished species until they too were overfished or died of epidemic diseases related to overcrowding. Retrospective data not only help to clarify underlying causes and rates of ecological change, but they also demonstrate achievable goals for restoration and management of coastal ecosystems that could not even be contemplated based on the limited perspective of recent observations alone.

Marine protected areas (MPAS) are a promising tool for many problems, from biodiversity conservation to fisheries management ([1][1]). Their success depends on connectivity among protected areas and spillover into unprotected areas. In their Report “Scaling of connectivity in marine populations

The global marine fish catch is approaching its upper limit. The number of overfished populations, as well as the indirect effects of fisheries on marine ecosystems, indicate that management has failed to achieve a principal goal, sustainability. This failure is primarily due to continually increasing harvest rates in response to incessant sociopolitical pressure for greater harvests and the intrinsic uncertainty in predicting the harvest that will cause population collapse. A more holistic approach incorporating interspecific interactions and physical environmental influences would contribute to greater sustainability by reducing the uncertainty in predictions. However, transforming the management process to reduce the influence of pressure for greater harvest holds more immediate promise.

Ecologists have fiercely debated for many decades whether populations are self-regulated by density-dependent biological mechanisms or are controlled by exogenous environmental forces. Here, a stochastic mechanistic model is used to show that the interaction of these two forces can explain observed large fluctuations in Dungeness crab ( Cancer magister ) numbers. Relatively small environmental perturbations interact with realistic nonlinear (density dependent) biological mechanisms, to produce dynamics that are similar to observations. This finding has implications throughout population biology, suggesting both that the study of deterministic density-dependent models is highly problematic and that stochastic models must include biologically relevant nonlinear mechanisms.

Marine reserves have been proposed as a remedy for overfishing and declining marine biodiversity, but concern that reserves would inherently reduce yields has impeded their implementation. It was found that management of fisheries through reserves and management through effort control produce identical yields under a reasonable set of simplifying assumptions corresponding to a broad range of biological conditions. Indeed, for populations with sedentary adults (invertebrates and reef fishes), reserves have important advantages for sustainability, making marine reserves the preferred management approach.

As early as the first day of life, the human neonate moves in precise and sustained segments of movement that are synchronous with the articulated structure of adult speech. These observations suggest a view of development of the infant as a participant at the outset in multiple forms of interactional organization, rather than as an isolate.

Crystals of thyroglobulin have been obtained from ammonium sulfate solutions and have been examined by electron microscopy as shadowed carbon replicas. Unit size in the crystal is 228 +/- 9 angstroms, which corresponds to a molecular weight of 5,300,000. Data are in accord with the possibility that this unit represents a polymer of thyroglobulin.
