Analyzing the changes in carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems caused by land use changes is a crucial part of exploring the carbon cycle. In addition, enhancing carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems is an effective and environmentally friendly measure to sequester anthropogenic carbon emissions, which is significant for achieving carbon neutrality and curbing global climate change. This paper uses land use data and carbon density tables with the InVEST model to obtain a carbon storage distribution map of China. It further applies land use response elasticity coefficients, Theil index multi-stage nested decomposition, and spatial autocorrelation analysis to examine the spatial-temporal patterns, causes of changes, and evolution characteristics of carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems from 1980 to 2020. The results show that the temporal changes in China's carbon storage generally present an inverted S-curve, with an initial rapid decline followed by a slower decrease. Spatially, it features high levels in the northeast, low levels in the northwest, and a uniform distribution in the central and southern regions. The disturbance of land use type changes on terrestrial ecosystem carbon storage has been effectively mitigated. The significant reduction in grassland area in the Southwest region is the main source of carbon storage loss during the study period, and the encroachment of construction land on arable land in large urban agglomerations is one of the important causes of carbon storage loss. The Theil index multi-stage nested decomposition results indicate that the overall difference in carbon storage in China has decreased, while differences among cities within provinces and among counties within cities have increased. The influence of natural factors on the distribution of carbon storage is weakening, whereas the impact of human activities is becoming more profound, enhancing its influence on the spatial distribution of carbon storage in China. From 1980 to 2000, the carbon density in coastal metropolises generally showed a declining trend. From 2000 to 2020, the carbon density in the central urban areas of eastern coastal city clusters gradually showed an upward trend and continued to expand outward, revealing to some extent the "Environmental Kuznets Curve" characteristic in the development process of urban carbon storage. Therefore, in future ecological construction, the government should fully consider the impact of land management planning on carbon storage in different regions, promote the efficient use and standardized management of land, and strive to cross the "Environmental Kuznets Curve" inflection point of carbon storage as soon as possible. To achieve carbon peak targets, realize carbon neutrality vision, and tackle global climate change, China must improve the carbon emission performance at the city level. Based on the carbon emission performance of 191 prefecture-level cities in China from 1997 to 2017, this paper analyses the evolution characteristics of urban carbon emission performance from three aspects: the overall spatial and temporal evolution, the differences according to both region and city size, and the differences among clusters categorized by carbon emission performance at the city level. This paper also reveals the impact of the social and economic transition on China's carbon emission performance. The results show that: (1) The overall level of carbon emission performance of Chinese cities is low, and there is a downward trend during the study period. The differences in carbon emission performance among cities are convergent, but there is a wide gap between high and low values. (2) The carbon emission performance of cities in eastern coastal areas is higher than that in non-coastal areas cities. Large urban agglomerations and economically developed regions, such as provincial capitals, are the agglomeration areas of high urban carbon emission performance values. (3) The carbon emission performance level of cities with similar sizes will converge. At the same time, such changes will enhance the differences among carbon emission performances at the city level within the same region. (4) Cities that belong to high urban carbon emission performance clusters are mainly distributed in the eastern region. Such cities are classified into large cities, supercities, and megacities. Compared with low urban carbon emission performance clusters, cities in high urban carbon emission performance clusters show a higher proportion in the medium-high level and high level of carbon emission performance. Moreover, cities in high urban carbon emission performance clusters are more likely to improve theirurban carbon emission performance. (5) The economic agglomeration effect, industrial structure adjustment and carbon intensity reduction have a significant impact on improving urban carbon emission performance. Population agglomeration has an incremental effect, and the anticipated benefits of environmental regulation have yet to be fully realized. Soil carbon sequestration is listed by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change as one of the key ways to achieve long-term “carbon neutrality” in the context of global warming. Soil carbon sequestration is a complex biogeochemical process that involves plants, microbes, and rock minerals at its core. Yet, its regulation mechanisms and promotion pathways remain unclear. This paper reviews recent progress in the related domestic and international research and provides an overview of the key processes and mechanisms of soil carbon sequestration. The main pathways for enhancing soil carbon sequestration (including plant inputs, mineral protection, microbial transformation, and rock weathering) are summarized. The paper also discusses and synthesizes how advanced biogeochemical methods and technologies may be employed to explore soil carbon sequestration mechanisms and potentials. The overall aim of this review is to improve our understanding of soil carbon sequestration as a nature-based solution to combatting climate change from the biogeochemistry perspective, and to highlight the role of fundamental research in Earth Sciences in helping to achieve China’s carbon neutrality goals. Regional processes on land-water-air interface carbon (C) budget and balance that interconnect the land and sea are in fact C neutrality critical processes within the earth system. It is therefore essential to quantitatively analyze synergistic land-water-air interface C transport and C exchange processes to gain a deep understanding of the important role that terrestrial ecosystems play in "missing C sink". This paper systematically analyzes global land-water-air interface C migration processes as well as C budget changes and associated impact mechanisms. It also investigates the important role that these C budgets and C cycling processes play in inland water bodies, respective to C budgets at the land-water-air interface. Moreover, this study reveals the regulatory mechanisms of land-water-air interface C budgets and balances under a background of global climate change. It also quantitatively evaluates the status of China's regional land-sea-air interface C budgets as well as the C sequestration potential of its lake systems. Finally, this study concludes that the explicit quantification of anthropogenic activity impacts on land-water-air interface C transport and exchange processes is of great significance to global C balances and C neutrality. The terrestrial carbon cycle is an important component of global biogeochemical cycling and is closely related to human well-being and sustainable development. However, large uncertainties exist in carbon cycle simulations and observations. Model-data fusion is a powerful technique that combines models and observational data to minimize the uncertainties in terrestrial carbon cycle estimation. In this paper, we comprehensively overview the sources and characteristics of the uncertainties in terrestrial carbon cycle models and observations. We present the mathematical principles of two model-data fusion methods, i.e., data assimilation and parameter estimation, both of which essentially achieve the optimal fusion of a model with observational data while considering the respective errors in the model and in the observations. Based upon reviewing the progress in carbon cycle models and observation techniques in recent years, we have highlighted the major challenges in terrestrial carbon cycle model-data fusion research, such as the "equifinality" of models, the identifiability of model parameters, the estimation of representativeness errors in surface fluxes and remote sensing observations, the potential role of the posterior probability distribution of parameters obtained from sensitivity analysis in determining the error covariance matrixes of the models, and opportunities that emerge by assimilating new remote sensing observations, such as solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence. It is also noted that the synthesis of multisource observations into a coherent carbon data assimilation system is by no means an easy task, yet a breakthrough in this bottleneck is a prerequisite for the development of a new generation of global carbon data assimilation systems. This article also highlights the importance of carbon cycle data assimilation systems to generate reliable and physically consistent terrestrial carbon cycle reanalysis data products with high spatial resolution and long-term time series. These products are critical to the accurate estimation of carbon cycles at the global and regional scales and will help future carbon management strategies meet the goals of carbon neutrality. With less than ten years left to meet its pledge to peak carbon dioxide emissions (peak emissions hereafter) by 2030, China has entered a critical emissions reduction stage. How to meet this commitment in a context in which GDP per capita will double from 2020 by 2035 is a major decision-making issue for the Chinese government and people and one which warrants further study. To reveal the relationships between the GDP growth rate, the rate of decrease of carbon intensity and the time to reach peak emissions, this study translates the question as to "when China's carbon emissions peak will occur" into "how can one control the rate of carbon intensity decrease at a given GDP growth rate". In the light of the results of a random forest algorithm used to identify and project the key drivers of carbon intensity in China, a mathematical model was developed to simulate different scenarios relating to decreases in carbon intensity. The date at which Chinese carbon emissions will peak is predicted by comparing the rate of decrease of carbon intensity with the GDP growth rate. The results show that the time to peak emissions depends on the relationship between the rate of decrease of carbon intensity and the GDP growth rate, where the former depends mainly on the energy structure and policy. If China's annual GDP growth rate were 5.0% during the 15th Five-Year Plan, and if the share of non-fossil energy in total energy consumption were 23.0% or above, China's carbon emissions will peak before 2030. If the share of non-fossil fuels were 20.0% or less, China might not be able to reach its 2030 target. In this latter case an acceleration in the pace of energy restructuring would be required to reach peak emissions before 2030. The projected peak emissions scenarios suggest that the carbon peak will occur between 2025 to 2029, with average peak emissions of 11.2 billion tons and a distribution ranging from a minimum of 10.5 billion and a maximum of 11.9 billion tons. If the GDP growth rate were 4.5%, 5.5% or 6.0% during the 15th Five-year Plan, the share of non-fossil energy must reach 23.0%, 25.0% or 27.0%, respectively, to ensure that emissions peak by 2030. Marine sediments are the most significant reservoir of organic carbon (OC) in Earth's surface system. Iron, a crucial component of the marine biogeochemical cycle, has a considerable impact on marine ecology and carbon cycling. Understanding the effect of iron on the preservation of OC in marine sediments is essential for comprehending biogeochemical processes of carbon and climate change. This review summarizes the methods for characterizing the content and structure of iron-bound OC and explores the influencing mechanism of iron on OC preservation in marine sediments from two aspects: the selective preservation of OC by reactive iron minerals (iron oxides and iron sulfides) and iron redox processes. The selective preservation of sedimentary OC is influenced by different types of reactive iron minerals, OC reactivity, and functional groups. The iron redox process has dual effects on the preservation and degradation of OC. By considering sedimentary records of iron-bound OC across diverse marine environments, the role of iron in long-term preservation of OC and its significance for carbon sequestration are illustrated. Future research should focus on identifying effective methods for extracting reactive iron, the effect of diverse functional groups and marine sedimentary environments on the selective preservation of OC, and the mediation of micro-organisms. Such work will help elucidate the influencing mechanisms of iron on the long-term burial and preservation of OC and explore its potential application in marine carbon sequestration to maximize its role in achieving carbon neutrality. The contemporary carbon balance over the Tibetan Plateau is highly uncertain with a ten-fold difference between various estimates. In a warming world, the potential exists for a large carbon release from its permafrost which could compromise China's 2060 carbon-neutral goal. Here, we used a satellite- and inventory-based approach, ecosystem models, and atmospheric inversions to estimate that the carbon sink was 33.12–37.84 TgC yr−1 during 2000–2015. The carbon sink induced by climate change and increasing CO2 levels largely overcompensated for a livestock grazing-induced carbon source of 0.38 TgC yr−1. By 2060, the carbon sink is projected to increase by 38.3–74.5% under moderate to high emissions scenarios, with the enhanced vegetation carbon uptake outweighing the warming-induced permafrost carbon release. The restoration of degraded grassland could sequestrate an additional 9.06 TgC yr−1, leading to a total carbon sink of 57.78–70.52 TgC yr−1. We conclude that the Tibetan Plateau's ecosystems absorbed two-and-a-half times the amount of its cumulative fossil CO2 emissions during 2000–2015 and that their carbon sinks will almost double in strength in the future, helping to achieve China's pledge to become carbon neutral by 2060. Based on historical land use for eight periods from 1980 to 2020 and the projected land use under seven Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs: SSP1-1.9, SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, SSP4-3.4, SSP4-6.0, and SSP5-8.5) from 2021 to 2100, we conducted a study on past and future land use changes in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). This work aims to reveal the land use changes during the carbon peak (2021–2040) and carbon neutrality (2051–2070) periods and at the end of the 21st century (2081–2100). The results show that: (1) in the historical period (1980–2020), the land use types in the QTP were grassland (1475×103 km2, 58.2%), barren land (685×103 km2, 27.0%), forest land (243×103 km2, 9.6%), water (114×103 km2, 4.5%), cropland (18.6×103 km2, 0.7%) and urban land (0.3×103 km2, 0.01%). (2) Relative to the baseline period (1995–2014), the area of grassland is projected to decrease by 0.7% (SSP4-6.0)–5.4% (SSP2-4.5) (0.5–3.9% of the total area of the QTP), 2.8% (SSP4-6.0)–12.5% (SSP3-7.0) (2.1–9.4% of the total area of the QTP) and 6.1% (SSP4-6.0)–21.7% (SSP4-3.4) (4.6–16.4% of the total area of the QTP) in the future three periods. In contrast, the forest land area is projected to increase, by approximately 2.5% (SSP4-6.0) to 30.1% (SSP3-7.0) (0.3–4.3% of the total area of the QTP), 9.2% (SSP4-6.0) to 56.5% (SSP2-4.5) (1.3–8.0% of the total area of the QTP), and 21.2% (SSP4-6.0) to 72.8% (SSP2-4.5) (3.0–10.2% of the total area of the QTP) in the future three periods, respectively. (3) Approximately 0.4 (SSP4-6.0) to 6.9% (SSP5-8.5), 0.9 (SSP4-6.0) to 2.7% (SSP4-3.4), and 0.04 (SSP5-8.5) to 3.5% (SSP1-1.9) of land is expected to convert from grassland to forest land in the future three periods, respectively. The food system is one of the major sources of anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The impact of emission transfer due to the separation between food production and consumption within the context of carbon neutrality remains unclear. In this study, we constructed an emission inventory for three types of grains at the production stage of their life cycle and then analysed the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of the grain supply and demand. With the use of a spatial equilibrium model, we simulated the spatial distribution flow of the different types of grains from 1990 to 2018 and calculated the resulting GHG emission transfer efficiency. The main results include the following: (1) The imbalance between the grain supply and demand intensified, which was mainly reflected in the distance between the geographic centre of the grain supply and consumption increasing 3.2 times, and thus, the self-sufficiency decreased. (2) The total emission transfer TET of rice and wheat decreased because of the increase in the intra-regional supply, while that of maize gradually increased due to the increase in the inter-regional supply. (3) Overall, grain trade improved the carbon efficiency of grain production in China. The trade efficiency of crops varied, with wheat and maize leading to overall effective carbon reductions, while the carbon transfer efficiency of rice from trade was relatively low. (4) The carbon footprint of grain production in China's provinces exhibited a downward trend, but due to the intensified separation between the grain supply and demand, certain major grain-producing areas achieved inefficient carbon increases. Therefore, we suggest further optimization of the spatial structure of planting and breeding, strengthening of the grain supply in the region, and enhancement in the optimization of the low-carbon production structure and adjustment of cultivated land use combined with regional governance strategies. The Chinese government has made a strategic decision to reach 'carbon neutrality' before 2060. China's terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink is currently offsetting 7–15% of national anthropogenic emissions and has received widespread attention regarding its role in the 'carbon neutrality' strategy. We provide perspectives on this question by inferring from the fundamental principles of terrestrial ecosystem carbon cycles. We first elucidate the basic ecological theory that, over the long-term succession of ecosystem without regenerative disturbances, the carbon sink of a given ecosystem will inevitably approach zero as the ecosystem reaches its equilibrium state or climax. In this sense, we argue that the currently observed global terrestrial carbon sink largely emerges from the processes of carbon uptake and release of ecosystem responding to environmental changes and, as such, the carbon sink is never an intrinsic ecosystem function. We further elaborate on the long-term effects of atmospheric CO2 changes and afforestation on China's terrestrial carbon sink: the enhancement of the terrestrial carbon sink by the CO2 fertilization effect will diminish as the growth of the atmospheric CO2 slows down, or completely stops, depending on international efforts to combat climate change, and carbon sinks induced by ecological engineering, such as afforestation, will also decline as forest ecosystems become mature and reach their late-successional stage. We conclude that terrestrial ecosystems have nonetheless an important role to play to gain time for industrial emission reduction during the implementation of the 'carbon neutrality' strategy. In addition, science-based ecological engineering measures including afforestation and forest management could be used to elongate the time of ecosystem carbon sink service. We propose that the terrestrial carbon sink pathway should be optimized, by addressing the questions of 'when' and 'where' to plan afforestation projects, in order to effectively strengthen the terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink and maximize its contribution to the realization of the 'carbon neutrality' strategy. China announced its national goal to reach the peak of carbon emission by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, during the General Assembly of the United Nations in September 2020. In this context, the potential of the carbon sink in China's terrestrial ecosystems to mitigate anthropogenic carbon emissions has attracted unprecedented attention from scientific communities, policy makers and the public. Here, we reviewed the assessments on China's terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink, with focus on the principles, frameworks and methods of terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink estimates, as well as the recent progress and existing problems. Looking forward, we identified critical issues for improving the accuracy and precision of China's terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink, in order to serve the more realistic policy making in pathways to achieve carbon neutrality for China. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) is widely used as an organic pollution indicator in wastewater treatment plants. Large amounts of organic matter are removed during treatment processes to meet environmental standards, and consequently, substantial greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as methane (CH4) are released. However, the COD indicator covers a great amount of refractory organic matter that is not a pollutant and could be a potential carbon sink. Here, we collected and analysed COD data from 86 worldwide municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and applied a model published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to estimate the emission of CH4 due to recalcitrant organic compound processing in China's municipal wastewater treatment systems Our results showed that the average contribution of refractory COD to total COD removal was 55% in 86 WWTPs. The amount of CH4 released from the treatment of recalcitrant organic matter in 2018 could have been as high as 38.22 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, which amounts to the annual carbon sequestered by China's wetlands. This suggests that the use of COD as an indicator for organic pollution is undue and needs to be revised to reduce the emission of GHG. In fact, leaving nontoxic recalcitrant organic matter in the wastewater may create a significant carbon sink and will save energy during the treatment process, aiming at carbon neutrality in the wastewater treatment industry. How to mitigate anthropogenic carbon emissions in cities determines to a large degree whether global temperature targets in this century are to be met. Using 12 cities in or outside China as case studies, we quantified the critical processes of carbon metabolism based on the urban carbon metabolism assessment framework (CMAF) proposed. The differences of sector contribution, and per capita and intensity among carbon throughflows, carbon inflows and carbon emissions were evaluated. Furthermore, we established an indicator system for CMAF consisting of flow-based and structural indicators to compare the low-carbon performances of cities. The results showed that the total carbon throughflow (TCT) and total carbon inflow (TCI) in Chinese cities were 7–12% higher than in European and American cities regarding the manufacturing and services sector on average, but 6–9% lower in the household consumption sector. Beijing, Tianjin, Nanjing and Guangzhou had lower per capita TCT and TCI than in European and American cities such as Paris and Los Angeles, while their carbon intensities were about three times as much. The per capita TCT in a city was found significantly correlated with per capita energy consumption and had a certain correlation with per capita building or housing area. This study found that TCT, TCI and carbon dioxide emission each provided unique information to measure the potential climatic impact of cities. The difference in the ranking of low-carbon performance between the investigated cities was significant both in terms of flow-based and structural indicators. We suggest these assessment indicators of carbon metabolism be integrated into urban resources management to reflect both the decarbonization status and future emission reduction potential more accurately and to provide systemic decision support for achieving the goal of carbon neutrality in cities.
