Intensive human activities aggravate environmental pollution, particularly in the coastal environment. Sixteen priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in the sediments and marine species from Zhanjiang Harbor, a large harbor in China. The total PAH concentrations ranged from 151 to 453 ng/g dry weight (dw) in sediments and from 86.7 to 256 ng/g wet weight (ww) in organism tissues. High levels of PAHs occurred in the sample sites next to the estuary. A decrease in PAH levels was observed in comparison to the previous survey prior to 2012. Fish exhibited lower lipid weight normalized PAH concentrations than the other species, which may be related to their efficient metabolic transformation. Three ring PAHs dominated both in marine sediments and species, but low molecular weight PAHs exhibited higher proportions in biota than in sediments ( p  < 0.05). Petrogenic and pyrolytic sources both contributed to the occurrence of PAHs, and the latter became increasingly important in the study area. The ecological risk from PAHs in the sediments was relatively low (9% incidence of adverse biological effect) according to the effects-based sediment quality guideline values. Exposure to PAHs via consuming seafoods might pose a health risk to local residents. Developing a more accurate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory draws too much attention. Because of its resource endowment and technical status, China has made coal-related GHG emissions a big part of its inventory. Lacking a stoichiometric carbon conversion coefficient and influenced by geological conditions and mining technologies, previous efforts to estimate fugitive methane emissions from coal mining in China has led to disagreeing results. This paper proposes a new calculation methodology to determine fugitive methane emissions from coal mining based on the domestic analysis of gas geology, gas emission features, and the merits and demerits of existing estimation methods. This new approach involves four main parameters: in-situ original gas content, gas remaining post-desorption, raw coal production, and mining influence coefficient. The case studies in Huaibei–Huainan Coalfield and Jincheng Coalfield show that the new method obtains the smallest error, + 9.59% and 7.01% respectively compared with other methods, Tier 1 and Tier 2 (with two samples) in this study, which resulted in + 140.34%, + 138.90%, and − 18.67%, in Huaibei–Huainan Coalfield, while + 64.36%, + 47.07%, and − 14.91% in Jincheng Coalfield. Compared with the predominantly used methods, this new one possesses the characteristics of not only being a comparably more simple process and lower uncertainty than the “emission factor method” (IPCC recommended Tier 1 and Tier 2), but also having easier data accessibility, similar uncertainty, and additional post-mining emissions compared to the “absolute gas emission method” (IPCC recommended Tier 3). The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) microplastics on greenhouse gas and ammonia emissions during 60 days composting. PE, PVC and PHA microplastics were respectively mixed with the cow manure; and a treatment without microplastics was used as the control. Compared to the control, PE and PVC inhibited organic matter degradation. Conversely, PHA accelerated temperature increases and organic matter degradation. Meanwhile, PE and PHA aggravated CH 4 and NH 3 emissions by 7.9–9.1% and 20.9–33.9%, respectively. PVC decreased CH 4 and NH 3 emissions by 6.6% and 30.4%, respectively. Additionally, the N 2 O emissions of the PE and PVC treatments were higher than those of the control while PHA decreased N 2 O emissions by 11.8%. Furthermore, PE, PVC and PHA microplastics reduced the NO 3 −-N contents and compost maturity. The results indicated that microplastics reduced compost quality while the effects of microplastics on greenhouse gases and ammonia emissions were related to their sources. Biological wood oxidation (BWO) is proposed as a cleaner alternative to wood combustion for heat production and wood waste management. Currently, BWO is not extensively studied and little is known about it. Nevertheless, given the composition of wood residues, which is dominated by carbon, nutrient availability may become a limiting factor during BWO. Our objective was to study the nutrition requirements for sustaining the BWO. For this purpose, three different factors including nitrogen addition, phosphorus addition and pH, were studied. Oxygen consumption and mass loss were monitored and used to evaluate the impact of nutrition on BWO and to calculate the theoretical heat production. The result showed that nitrogen addition at a relatively low level (2.5-10 mg/g) enhanced the cumulative oxygen consumption by 60–124% and mass loss by 28–95%, when compared with the BWO without nitrogen addition. The highest nitrogen addition examined in this research (20 mg/g), on the other hand, did not enhance BWO. Different phosphorus addition (0.5–5 mg/g) and pH (4–6) had little impacts on BWO. The highest theoretical heat production rate (0.63 W/kg dry wood biomass) was achieved using 2.5 mg/g nitrogen addition with a 95-day incubation. This suggests that nitrogen addition is required and able to sustain BWO. Besides, the cumulative oxygen consumption showed a good linear relationship with mass loss. This study provides the first indication on the effective quantify of nitrogen addition for enhancing BWO, which contributes to the selection of nutrient source for BWO in future studies.
