Anthropogenic changes in land use/cover have altered the vegetation, soil, and carbon (C) cycling on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau (QTP) over the last ~ 50 years. As a result, the Grain for Green Program (GfGP) has been widely implemented over the last 10 years to mitigate the impacts of cultivation. To quantify the effects of the GfGP on C partitioning and turnover rates at the ecosystem scale, an in situ 13 C pulse labeling experiment was conducted on natural and GfGP grasslands in an agro-pastoral ecotone in the Lake Qinghai region on the QTP. We found that there were significant differences in the C stocks of all the considered pools in both the natural and GfGP grasslands, with higher CO 2 uptake rates in the GfGP grassland than that in the natural grassland. Partitioning of photoassimilate (% of recovered 13 C) in C pools of both grasslands was similar 25 days after labeling, except in the roots of the 0–15 and 5–15 cm soil layer. Soil organic C (SOC) sequestration rate in the GfGP grassland was 11.59 ± 1.89 g C m − 2 yr − 1 significantly greater than that in the natural grassland. The results confirmed that the GfGP is an efficient approach for grassland restoration and C sequestration. However, it will take more than a century (119.19 ± 20.26 yr) to restore the SOC stock from the current cropland baseline level to the approximate level of natural grassland. We suggest that additional measures are needed in the selection of suitable plant species for vegetation restoration, and in reasonable grazing management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oxygen has not been purposely introduced to the autotrophic denitrification systems and simultaneous nitrification/autotrophic denitrification (SNAD) has not been proposed. In this study, oxygen was introduced into a micro-electrolysis-enhanced Fe 0 -supported autotrophic denitrification (mFe 0 AD) system. The nitrogen removal performance was investigated and the application potential of iron-scraps-supported simultaneous nitrification/mFe 0 AD was evaluated. The results showed that Fe 0 AD was surprisingly enhanced by oxygen together with nitrification at average dissolved oxygen (DO) of 0.08-1.56 mg/L. The ammonia oxidizing bacterial, nitrite oxidizing bacteria, facultative autotrophic denitrificans, and iron compounds transformation bacteria were markedly enriched. Average denitrification rate shifted from 0.116 to 0.340 kg N/(m 3 ·d) with increase of average total nitrogen removal efficiency from 31.4% to 90.5%. Oxygen could enhance the biological conversion and storage of iron compounds, which was capable of reducing the coating of Fe 0 surface.The accelerating of oxygen on  Fe0 passivation appeared when increasing the average DO from 1.56 to 2.17 mg/L. Therefore, the SNAD was recommended to be operated at the DO range of 0.08-1.56 mg/L. ME significantly enhanced Fe 0 AD, and the utilization of iron-scraps reduced its cost. The denitrification rate is comparable with methanol supported heterotrophic denitrification with 58.9% reduction on the cost. Alkyl nitrates (RONO 2 ) are important reservoirs of nitrogen oxides and play key roles in the tropospheric chemistry. Two phases of intensive campaigns were conducted during February-April and June-July of 2017 at a rural coastal site and in open oil fields of the Yellow River Delta region, northern China. C 1 -C 5 alkyl nitrates showed higher concentration levels in summer than in winter-spring (p < 0.01), whilst their parent hydrocarbons showed an opposite seasonal variation pattern. The C 3 -C 5 RONO 2 levels in the oil fields were significantly higher than those in the ambient rural air. Alkyl nitrates showed well-defined diurnal variations, elucidating the effects of in-situ photochemical production and regional transport of aged polluted plumes. Backward trajectory analysis and fire maps revealed the significant contribution of biomass burning to the observed alkyl nitrates and hydrocarbons. A simplified sequential reaction model and an observation-based chemical box model were deployed to diagnose the formation mechanisms of C 1 -C 5 RONO 2 . The C 3 -C 5 RONO 2 were mainly produced from the photochemical oxidation of their parent hydrocarbons (i.e., C 3 -C 5 alkanes), whilst C 1 -C 2 RONO 2 compounds have additional sources. In addition to parent hydrocarbons, longer alkanes with >4 carbon atoms were also important precursors of alkyl nitrates in the oil fields. China has received increased international criticism in recent years in relation to its air pollution levels, both in terms of the transmission of pollutants across international borders and the attendant adverse health effects being witnessed. Whilst existing research has examined the factors influencing ambient air pollutant concentrations, previous studies have failed to adequately explore the determinants of such concentrations from either a source or diffusion perspective. This study addressed both source (specifically, anthropogenic emissions) and diffusion (namely, meteorological conditions) indicators, in order to detect their respective impacts on the spatial variations seen in the distribution of air pollution. Spatial panel data for 113 major cities in China was processed using a range of global regression models-the ordinary least square model, the spatial lag model, and the spatial error model-as well as a local, geographic weighted regression (GWR) model. Results from the study suggest that in 2014, average SO 2 concentrations exceeded China's first-level target. The most polluted cities were found to be predominantly located in northern China, while less polluted cities were located in southern China. Global regression results indicated that precipitation exerts a significant effect on SO 2 reduction (p<0.001) and that a regional increase of 1mm in precipitation can reduce SO 2 concentrations by 0.026μg/m 3 . Both emission and temperature factors were found to aggravate SO 2 concentrations, although no such significant correlation was found in relation to wind speed. GWR results suggest that the association between SO 2 and its factors varied over space. Increased emissions were found to be able to produce more pollution in the northwest than in other parts of the country. Higher wind speeds and temperatures in northwestern areas were shown to reinforce SO 2 pollution, while in southern regions, they had the opposite effect. Further, increased precipitation was found to exert a greater inhibitory effect on SO 2 pollution in the country's northeast than that in other areas.
