Quantitatively ascertaining and analyzing long-term responses of crop yield and nitrate leaching on varying irrigation and fertilization treatments are focal points for guaranteeing crop yield and reducing nitrogen loss. The calibrated agricultural-hydrological RZWQM2 model was used to explore the long-term (2003–2013) transport processes of water and nitrogen and the nitrate leaching amount into groundwater in summer maize and winter wheat rotation field in typical intensive plant area in the North China Plain, Daxing district of Beijing. Simulation results showed that application rates of irrigation and nitrogen fertilizer have couple effects on crop yields and nitrogen leaching of root zone. When both the irrigation and fertilizer for summer maize and winter wheat were 400 mm and 400 kg N ha − 1 , respectively, nitrate leaching into groundwater accounted for 47.9% of application amount of nitrogen fertilizer. When application amount of irrigation is 200 mm and fertilization is 200 kg N ha − 1 , NUPE (nitrogen uptake efficiency), NUE (nitrogen use efficiency), NPFP (nitrogen partial factor productivity), and W pi (irrigation water productive efficiency) were in general higher than that under other irrigation and fertilization condition (irrigation from 104–400 mm, fertilizer 104–400 kg N ha − 1 ). Large volumes of sulfur-containing wastes enter municipal solid waste landfills each year. Under the anaerobic conditions that prevail in landfills, oxidized forms of sulfur, primarily sulfate, are converted to sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is corrosive to landfill gas collection and treatment systems, and its presence in landfill gas often necessitates the installation of expensive removal systems. For landfill operators to understand the cost of managing sulfur-containing wastes, an estimate of the H 2 S production potential is needed. The objective of this study was to develop and demonstrate a biochemical sulfide potential (BSP) test to measure the amount of H 2 S produced by different types of sulfur-containing wastes in a relatively fast (30 days) and inexpensive (125 mL serum bottles) batch assay. This study confirmed the toxic effect of H 2 S on both sulfate reduction and methane production in batch systems, and demonstrated that removing accumulated H 2 S by base adsorption was effective for mitigating inhibition. H 2 S production potentials of coal combustion fly ash, flue gas desulfurization residual, municipal solid waste combustion ash, and construction and demolition waste were determined in BSP assays. After 30 days of incubation, most of the sulfate in the wastes was converted to gaseous or aqueous phase sulfide, with BSPs ranging from 0.8 to 58.8 mL H 2 S/g waste, depending on the chemical composition of the samples. Selected samples contained solid phase sulfide which contributed to the measured H 2 S yield. A 60 day incubation in selected samples resulted in 39–86% additional sulfide production. H 2 S production measured in BSP assays was compared with that measured in simulated landfill reactors and that calculated from chemical analyses. H 2 S production in BSP assays and in reactors was lower than the stoichiometric values calculated from chemical composition for all wastes tested, demonstrating the importance of assays to estimate the microbial sulfide production potential of sulfur-containing wastes. Abstract: To characterize statewide fish tissue mercury levels in edible finfish the first comprehensive analysis of Louisiana''s fish tissue mercury database was conducted. Analyses were based on fifteen years of fish tissue mercury data collected from 368 waterbodies between 1994 and 2008 (n=14,344). The overall objectives of this study were to establish baseline fish tissue mercury levels; and evaluate species-specific temporal and spatial trends in fish tissue mercury levels. Fish tissue mercury levels ranged from 0.001ppm (the detection limit) to 5.904ppm for king mackerel; with an overall geometric mean of 0.218ppm. Ninety-five percent of samples had mercury levels below the FDA''s action level of 1.0ppm for methylmercury in commercial food. Forty-four percent of all samples had mercury levels above the U.S. EPA''s methylmercury fish tissue criterion of 0.3ppm for sportfish. Species of potential concern include cobia, king mackerel, blackfin tuna, greater amberjack, spotted bass, bowfin, largemouth bass and freshwater drum. There was a significant but small decline in statewide length-adjusted largemouth bass mercury levels between 1994–1999 to 2003–2008 (p<0.05). The highest fish mercury levels were observed in Pearl, Calcasieu, Mermentau, Ouachita, Pontchartrain and Sabine basins. Length-adjusted largemouth bass mercury levels were significantly higher in wetlands and rivers/streams vs. lakes; and in wetlands vs. estuaries (p<0.05). Despite their profound roles in atmospheric chemistry and health concerns, the gas-particle partitioning of carbonyl compounds and its influencing factors in the ambient atmosphere are poorly elucidated. In this work, a reliable method using a denuder/filter-pack system coated with the derivative reagent, O -(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzyl)hydroxylamine (PFBHA) was developed for the simultaneous collection of gaseous and particulate carbonyls. Sampling campaigns were performed at an urban site in Zhengzhou, China. The average field-derived partitioning coefficients (K p f ) of the six most abundant carbonyls (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, propionaldehyde, glyoxal, and methylglyoxal) were in the range of 10−5–10−4 m3·μg−1, and their effective Henry's law coefficients (eff. K H) ranged from 107 to 109 M·atm−1. Comparisons revealed that their K p f and eff. K H were 104–106 times and 102–107 times higher than theoretically predicted, respectively. Given that the aerosol liquid water is a concentrated salt solution, these six carbonyls very clearly salted in to three atmospherically relevant aqueous salts, following the order of sulfate > ammonium > nitrate. However, even taking salting-in effects into account, the Pankow's absorptive partitioning theory and effective Henry's law both failed to explain the unexpected highly particulate carbonyls. In regard to the influencing factors, the negative correlations between K p f and temperature indicate that lower temperature is conducive to carbonyls partitioning. As for the strong relative humidity (RH) dependence of K P f , high partitioning coefficients were observed under low and high RH conditions. Partitioning is considered to be dominated by the carbonyl-oligomer formation when RH increases from <10% to 50%, and driven by the abundant aerosol liquid water content when RH exceeds 50%. The presence of particulate inorganic components and the transition of particle phase state may also impact the partitioning process, especially in the urban atmosphere.
