Under changing environmental conditions, water level is a crucial indicator for assessing the wetland hydrological cycle. However, due to some wetlands being located in remote and widely dispersed areas, acquiring data on wetland water level changes presents significant challenges, making wetland water level monitoring exceptionally difficult. Wetlands are extensively distributed in western Jilin Province, China, and are experiencing significant degradation due to various factors including natural conditions, agricultural activities, and social development. To address this challenge, this study proposes a monitoring method that combines Sentinel-3 radar altimetry satellites with optical remote sensing images to obtain wetland water level data. Additionally, the study takes into account the Chinese government's Interconnected River System Network Project (IRSNP), classifying wetlands in western Jilin Province into three different water recharge scenarios: direct recharge through main and branch canals, indirect recharge through ditches, and no recharge to isolated wetlands. This study analyses the relationship between wetland water level changes and climatic factors, and assesses how IRSNP can mitigate the negative impacts of climate factors on wetland water levels across different recharge scenarios. The results show that: (1) the wetland water level monitoring method, has high accuracy and feasibility. The average difference between the in-situ measured and satellite-monitored water levels was 0.254 m. (2) There was an overall increasing trend in wetland water levels directly influenced by IRSNP, an insignificant decreasing trend in wetland water levels indirectly influenced by IRSNP. (3) Increased precipitation and decreased evaporation are the predominant climatic factors contributing to rising wetland water levels. Conversely, lower relative humidity and higher temperatures primarily lead to declining water levels. The construction of IRSNP can mitigate the impact of climate change on water levels. Biochar (BC) amendment has been proposed as a promising strategy for mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, specifically carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), methane (CH 4 ), and nitrous oxide (N 2 O). Conducting a meta-analysis to evaluate the impact of biochar on microbial genetic profile, community structure, and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) contents can aid in identifying key microbial groups involved in GHG production and consumption, and assessing the overall effectiveness of biochar in reducing GHG emissions. The present meta-analysis revealed that the addition of biochar resulted in a 22 % and 41 % reduction in pmoA and mcrA genes of methanogenic microorganisms, respectively. The mcrA/pmoA ratio significantly increased by 81 %. Gene abundances exhibited a positive response to biochar amendment, with increases observed in nifH, nirK, nirS, nosZ, and nosZ (nirS + nirK) genes by 13 %, 32 %, 37 %, 42 %, and 79 %, respectively. Moreover, biochar amendment influenced the microbial community structure accordingly. The concentration of PLFAs increased in response to BC treatment in the following order: A-bacteria (+49 %) < Fungi (+30 %) < Gram-pb (+21 %) < G-bacteria (+17 %) < Gram-nb (+11 %). Livestock farm is a major source of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) pollution. ARGs can directly enter the environment through runoff and air deposition. The impact extent and the driving factors require further investigation to inform effective policies and actions to mitigate their spread. This study investigated a smallholder pig farm and its surrounding areas to understand the spread of ARGs. Topsoil samples were collected from 56 different sites within one kilometer of the farm, and a comprehensive analysis was conducted to reveal effects of soil properties, antibiotic residues, microbiome, mobilome on the variation of typical ARGs. The results confirmed that the ARGs reduced exponentially with increasing distance from the farm, with a goodness of fit (R 2 ) of 0.7 for total ARGs. For tetracyclines (TC) and sulfonamides (SA) resistance genes, the fitting R 2 exceeded 0.9. Model estimates allowed for quantitative comparisons of in-farm increments, out-farm background levels, and spread abilities of ARGs with distinct resistance mechanisms. SA-specific resistance genes (SRGs, 0.097 copies/16S rRNA gene) and TC-specific resistance genes (TRGs, 0.036 copies/16S rRNA gene) showed higher within-farm increases compared to multidrug resistance genes (MDRGs, 0.020 copies/16S rRNA gene). MDRGs, however, had a higher background level and a greater impact distance (0.18 km, 4.4 times the farm radius). Additionally spread abilities of TRGs varied by resistance mechanism, with ribosome protection proteins showing greater spread than TC inactivating enzymes and TC efflux pumps, likely due to different fitness costs. Correlation analysis and structural equation modeling indicated that changes in bacterial community composition and mobilome are primary factors influencing ARGs variation during their spread. Abiotic factors like soil nutrients and antibiotics also selectively enriched ARGs within the farm. Mangrove afforestation is usually thought to be beneficial to mitigate the degradation and loss of mangroves. In Southern China, planting mangroves with the introduced Sonneratia apetala is also supportive to remove the invasive Spartina alterniflora. However, the influence of mangrove afforestation dominated by introduced species on macrobenthos, a vital joint of energy flow and nutrient cycling in mangroves, remains unclear. We explored the linkage between the functional traits of macrobenthos and the physicochemical properties of sediments in a coastal continuum including the mudflat (MF), exotic Spartina alterniflora saltmarsh (SL), natural Avicennia marina forest (AM), and introduced S. apetala afforestation (SA) via a seasonal field survey. After removing the S. alterniflora invaded into mudflat via S. apetala afforestation, the sediment C/N ratio decreased compared to that of natural forest, while the concentrations of microphytobenthic chlorophyll-a increased. The macrobenthic inhabiting mode shifted from epifaunal to infaunal as well. The biomass and density of microbenthic community decreased along MF, SL, AM, and SA. SL had greater C/N ratio and smaller functional richness (F R ) than MF. AM was characterized by similar functional diversities, and pH value and salinity of sediment to those of MF, and greater microphytobenthic chlorophyll-a was found in AM. Compared to AM, the introduced S. apetala substantially engineered the habitat due to its flourishing above-ground pneumatophore system which caused faster deposition process, subsequently changed the resource utilization strategies of macrobenthos considerably. Overall, the use of Sonneratia afforestation on Spartina removal could not replace the contribution of natural Avicennia forest with respect to the functional traits of macrobenthos. High-efficiency land use facilitates the maximization of land utilization, lowers urban construction costs, and optimizes urban functional patterns. The Sustainable Development Goal 11.3.1 (SDG 11.3.1) can be used to assess land use efficiency (LUE), understand the current state of land use, and identify the potential for optimization. This study combines SDG 11.3.1 with other supplementary indicators to establish a land use efficiency evaluation system. This system provides a more precise understanding of internal city changes and enables a scientific assessment of urban LUE in Mainland China. The results showed that: (1) A significant number of cities were growing cities, particularly in the eastern region, with the population of built-up areas increased by 2.92 times from 2000 to 2020; (2) From 2000 to 2020, cities in China underwent rapid urban expansion, with the most significant urban expansion index in 2015-2020; (3) The coordination between population growth rate (PGR) and land consumption rate (LCR) worsened in the western region, while the central and eastern regions showed better coordination. (4) As the urban expansion index increased, the compactness index of the cities in the above three regions decreased and were at lower levels. This study establishes an evaluation system to assess the LUE and reveals the spatial and temporal characteristics of urban and population change. Root resource acquisition strategies play a crucial role in understanding plant water uptake and drought adaptation. However, the interrelationships among mycorrhizal associations, root hair development, and fine root strategies, as well as the disparities between C 3 and C 4 grasses, remain largely unknown. A pot experiment was conducted to determine leaf gas exchange, root morphology, root hair, mycorrhizal fungi, and biomass allocation of three C 4 grasses and four C 3 grasses, common species of grasslands in Northeast China, under the control and drought conditions. Compared to the C 3 grasses, the C 4 grasses increased specific surface area by decreasing tissue density, yet exhibited root hair factor at only 21 % of the C 3 grasses. Under the drought conditions, the C 4 grasses exhibited more intense and extensive adjustments in root traits, characterized by shifts toward a more conservative morphology with increased root diameter and tissue density, as well as reduced mycorrhizal colonization rates. These adaptations led to a decrease in root absorptive function, which was compensated in the C 4 grasses by greater root biomass partitioning and root hair factor. Variances in root strategies between plants functional groups were closely related to leaf photosynthetic rate, water and nitrogen use efficiency. We observed that the C 4 grasses prefer direct acquisition of soil resources through the fine root pathway over the root hair or mycorrhizal pathway, suggesting a 'do-it-yourself' approach. Soil respiration (R s ) is projected to be substantially affected by climate change, impacting the storage, equilibrium, and movement of terrestrial carbon (C). However, uncertainties surrounding the responses of R s to climate change and soil nitrogen (N) enrichment are linked to mechanisms specific to diverse climate zones. A comprehensive meta-analysis was conducted to address this, evaluating the global effects of warming, increased precipitation, and N enrichment on R s across various climate zones and ecosystems. Data from 123 studies, encompassing a total of 10,377 worldwide observations, were synthesized for this purpose. Annual R s were modeled and their uncertainties were associated with a 1-km 2 resolution global R s database spanning from 1961 to 2022. Calibrating R s using ensemble machine learning (EML) and employing 10-fold cross-validation, 13 environmental covariates were utilized. The meta-analysis findings revealed an upsurge in R s rates in response to warming, with tropical, arid, and temperate climate zones exhibiting increases of 12 %, 13 %, and 16 %, respectively. Furthermore, increased precipitation led to stimulated R s rates of 11 % and 9 % in tropical and temperate zones, respectively, while N deposition affected R s in cold (+6 %) and tropical (+5 %) climate zones. The machine learning technique estimated the global soil respiration to range from 91 to 171 Pg C yr -1 , with an average R s of 700 ± 300 g C m -2  yr -1 . The values ranged between 314 and 2500 g C m -2  yr -1 , with the lowest and highest values observed in cold and tropical zones, respectively. Spatial variation in R s was most pronounced in low-latitude areas, particularly in tropical rainforests and monsoon zones. Temperature, precipitation, and N deposition were identified as crucial environmental factors exerting significant influences on R s rates worldwide. Water-soluble metals exert a significant influence on human and ecosystem health. In this study, a comprehensive investigation was undertaken to elucidate the solubilities of metals in PM 2.5 and potential influencing factors during the dry season of 2019-2020 in urban Guangzhou, South China. The observed average solubility was <20 % for Al, Fe, Sn, and Ti; 20-40 % for V, Cr, Sb, Pb, and Ni; 40-60 % for Ba and Cu; and 60-80 % for Zn, As, Se, Cd, and Mn. Metals (Al, Ti, and Fe) originated from crustal sources (e.g., soil dust) have much lower solubilities than those (Mn, Zn, As, Se, Cd, and Ba) from fossil fuel combustion sources (e.g., traffic emission, coal combustion), suggesting the dominant role the metal sources played on solubility. Enhanced solubilities of Cu, As, Se, Cd, Sn, Sb, and Pb were associated with aerosol acidity, while those of V, Cr, Mn, Ni, Zn, and Ba were linked to organic acid complexation. For the three crustal metals, the solubilities of Al and Ti primarily depended on aerosol acidity, whereas the solubility of Fe depended on both aerosol acidity under pH < 2 conditions and organic acid complexation under pH > 2 conditions. The application of manganese-oxidizing bacteria (MnOB) to produce manganese oxides (MnOx) has been widely studied, but often overlooking the concurrent formation of MnCO 3 . In this study, we found Ca 2+ plays a crucial role in controlling Mn(II) removal in the bacterium Aurantimonas sp. HBX-1. Under conditions with 6.8 mM Ca 2+ and without adding Ca 2+ , 100 μM Mn(II) was removed by 96.96 % and 38.28 % within 8 days, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that adding Ca 2+ increased the average oxidation state (AOS) of the solid products from 2.05 to 2.37. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis revealed the product proportions as follows: under Ca 2+ -supplemented condition, the ratio of MnOx (1 < x ≤ 2) to MnCO₃ was 52 % to 28.1 %, while under Ca 2+ -free condition, the ratio shifted to 4.6 % for MnOx (1 < x ≤ 2) and 55.2 % for MnCO₃. Urease activity assay and proteomic analysis confirmed the expression of urease and carbonic anhydrase, leading to the formation of MnCO 3 . Additionally, animal heme peroxidase (AHP) in strain HBX-1 was found to be responsible for Mn(II) oxidation through superoxide production, with Ca 2+ addition promoting its expression level. Fine-root architecture is critical feature reflecting root explorative and exploitative strategies for soil resources and soil space occupancy. Yet, studies on the variation of fine-root architecture across different species are scare and little work has been done to integrate the potential drivers on these variations along a biogeographical gradient in arid ecosystems. We measured root branching intensity, topological index, and root branching ratios as well as morphological traits (root diameter and length) in dry valley along a 1000 km latitudinal gradient. Influence of phylogeny, environmental factors on fine-root architecture and trade-offs among root traits were evaluated. With increasing latitude, the topological index and second to third root order branching ratio decreased, whereas first-to-second branching ratio increased. Root branching intensity was associated with short and thin fine roots, but has no significant latitudinal pattern. As a whole, soil microbial biomass was the most important driver in the variation of root branching intensity, and soil texture was the strongest predictor of topological index. Additionally, mean annual temperature was an important factor influencing first-to-second branching ratio. Arsenic and PAHs impose environmental stress on soil microorganisms, yet their compound effects remain poorly understood. While soil microorganisms possess the ability to metabolize As and PAHs, the mechanisms of microbial response are not fully elucidated. In our study, we established two simulated soil systems using soil collected from Xixi Wetland Park grassland, Hangzhou, China. The As-600 Group was contaminated with 600 mg/kg sodium arsenite, while the As-600-PAHs-30 Group received both 600 mg/kg sodium arsenite and 30 mg/kg PAHs (phenanthrene:fluoranthene:benzo[a]pyrene = 1:1:1). These systems were operated continuously for 270 days, and microbial responses were assessed using high-throughput sequencing and metagenomic analysis. Our findings revealed that compound contamination significantly promoted the abundance of microbial defense-related genes, with general defense genes increasing by 11.07 % ∼ 74.23 % and specific defense genes increasing by 44.13 % ∼ 55.74 %. The dominate species Rhodococcus adopts these general and specific defense mechanisms to resist compound pollution stress and gain ecological niche advantages, making it a candidate strain for soil remediation. A large fraction of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) and ozone (O 3 ) in the troposphere originates from secondary formation through photochemical processes, which remarkably contributes to the deterioration of regional air quality in China. The photochemical reactions initiated by hydroxyl radicals (OH) play vital roles in secondary PM 2.5 and O 3 formation. In contrast, the OH levels in polluted areas are underestimated by current chemical transport models (CTMs) because of the strongly unknown daytime sources of tropospheric nitric acid (HONO), which has been recognized as the dominant source of primary OH in polluted areas of China. In this study, the atmospheric HONO levels at two urban sites were found to be significantly underestimated by the WRF-Chem model based on available information on HONO sources. The HONO levels could be well reproduced by the WRF-Chem model after incorporating two new potential HONO sources from the photochemical reactions of NO x , as proposed in our previous study based on chamber experiment results. Comparing the simulations with available information of HONO sources, the simulated levels of atmospheric OH, secondary inorganic and organic aerosols (SIA and SOA), PM 2.5 and daily maximum 8-h average (MDA8) O 3 were evidently elevated or were closer to the observations over the North China Plain (NCP), with elevation percentages of 0.48-20.1 %, and a decrement percentage of -5.79 % for pNO 3 - . Additionally, the compensating errors in modeling PM 2.5 and the gap in MDA8 O 3 levels between observation and simulation in 2 + 26 cities became evidently smaller. Microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE) and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) are crucial parameters reflecting soil C and N sequestration. Concerns about how artificial activities disturb alpine meadow ecosystem are increasing, but the knowledge of variances in microbial CUE and NUE in response to turf storage remains scarce. Here, we conducted a turf storage experiment on the Tibetan Plateau with two common storage methods, laying turfs method (LT) and stacking turfs method (ST). Plant litter, aboveground and belowground biomass declined considerably in the LT and ST than those in natural meadow. Soil pH and available phosphorus were significantly lower, but soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon, and available nitrogen were substantially higher in stored turfs (both ST and LT) than in natural meadow. These results led to a differentiation in nutrient status among treatments. Vetor model indicated a stronger C limitation (vector length > 0.61) in ST than that in the LT and a shift from N to P limitation (vector angle >55°) in all stored turfs. Microbial CUE was prominently higher in the LT than those in the ST, signifying that microbes allocated more exogenous C to self-growth in the LT. Microbial NUE declined considerably in stored turfs, indicating a great proportion of N used for catabolic process instead of anabolic process. Microbial CUE and NUE were tightly linked to nutrient content and availability, enzymatic stoichiometry, microbial traits and plant biomass. Environmental behaviors of heavy metal in soil are strongly influenced by seasonal freeze-thaw events at the mid-high altitudes. However, the potential impact mechanisms of freeze-thaw cycles on the vertical migration of heavy metal are still poor understood. This study aimed to explore how exogenous cadmium (Cd) migrated and remained in soil during the in-situ seasonal freeze-thaw action using rare earth elements (REEs) as tracers. As a comparison, soil which was incubated in the controlled laboratory (25 °C) was employed. Although there was no statistically significant difference in the Cd levels of different soil depths under different treatments, the original aggregate sources of Cd in the 5-10 cm and 10-15 cm soil layers differed. From the distributions of REEs in soil profile, it can be known that Cd in the subsurface of field incubated soil was mainly from the breakdown of >0.50 mm aggregates, while it was mainly from the <0.106 mm aggregates for the laboratory incubated soil. Furthermore, the dissolved and colloidal Cd concentrations were 0.47 μg L -1 and 0.62 μg L -1 in the leachates from field incubated soil than those from control soil (0.21 μg L -1 and 0.43 μg L -1 ). Additionally, the colloid-associated Cd in the leachate under field condition was mainly from the breakdown of >0.25 mm aggregates and the direct migration of <0.106 mm aggregates, while it was the breakdown of >0.50 mm and the direct migration of <0.106 mm aggregates for the soil under laboratory condition. The global health implications of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) underscore the imperative need for research into its toxicity and chemical composition. In this study, zebrafish embryos exposed to the water-soluble components of PM 2.5 from two cities (Harbin and Hangzhou) with differences in air quality, underwent microscopic examination to identify primary target organs. The Harbin PM 2.5 induced dose-dependent organ malformation in zebrafish, indicating a higher level of toxicity than that of the Hangzhou sample. Harbin PM 2.5 led to severe deformities such as pericardial edema and a high mortality rate, while the Hangzhou sample exhibited hepatotoxicity, causing delayed yolk sac absorption. The experimental determination of PM 2.5 constituents was followed by the application of four algorithms for predictive toxicological assessment. The random forest algorithm correctly predicted each of the effect classes and showed the best performance, suggesting that zebrafish malformation rates were strongly correlated with water-soluble components of PM 2.5 . Feature selection identified the water-soluble ions F - and Cl - and metallic elements Al, K, Mn, and Be as potential key components affecting zebrafish development. This study aims to evaluate the effects of oxytetracycline (OTC) on detoxification and oxidative defense in the hepatopancreas and intestine of Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) under cadmium (Cd) stress. The crab was exposed to 0.6 μM Cd, 0.6 μM OTC, and 0.6 μM Cd plus 0.6 μM OTC for 42 days. Our results showed that in the intestine, OTC alone enhanced protein carboxylation (PC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents, which was associated with the increased OTC accumulation. Compared to Cd alone, Cd plus OTC increased Cd and OTC contents, and reduced detoxification (i.e., glutathione (GSH) content, gene expressions of cytochrome P450 (CYP) isoforms, 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity, mRNA levels and activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST)), and antioxidant defense (i.e., gene expressions and activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)) in the intestine, leading to the increased in PC and MDA contents, suggesting that OTC had a synergistic effect on Cd-induced oxidative damage. In the hepatopancreas, although OTC alone increased OTC accumulation, it did not affect PC and MDA contents. Compared to Cd alone, Cd plus OTC reduced MDA content, which was closely related to the improvement of detoxification (i.e., GSH content, mRNA levels of CYP isoforms, EROD activity, gene expressions and activities of GPx, GR and GST), and antioxidant defense (gene expressions and activities of CAT and SOD, metallothionein content). Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) transcriptional expressions were positively correlated with most detoxification- and antioxidant-related gene expressions, respectively, indicating that AhR and Nrf2 were involved in the regulation of these gene expressions. Vegetables capture antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from the soil and then pass them on to consumers through the delivery chain and food chain, and are therefore the key node that may increase the risk of human exposure to ARGs. This study investigates the patterns and driving forces behind the transmission of ARGs from soil to vegetables by the commonly planted cash crops in the coastal region of southern China, i.e. broccoli, pumpkin, and broad bean, to investigate. The study used metagenomic data to reveal the microbial and ARGs profiles of various vegetables and the soil they are grown. The results indicate significant differences in the accumulation of ARGs among different vegetables harvested in the same area at the same time frame, and the ARGs accumulation ability of the three vegetables was in the order of broccoli, broad bean, and pumpkin. In addition, broccoli collected the highest number of ARGs in types (n = 14), while pumpkin (n = 13) does not obtain trimethoprim resistance genes and broad beans (n = 10) do not obtain chloramphenicol, fosmidomycin, quinolone, rifamycin, or trimethoprim resistance genes. Host tracking analysis shows a strong positive correlation (|rho| > 0.8, p < 0.05) between enriched ARGs and plant companion microbes. Enrichment analysis of metabolic pathways of companion microbes shows that vegetables exhibit a discernible enrichment of companion microbes, with significant differences among vegetables. This phenomenon is primarily due to the screening of carbohydrate metabolism capabilities among companion microbes and leads varied patterns of ARGs that spread from the soil to vegetables. Size-segregated aerosols collected in Beijing from 2021 to 2022 were used to investigate the contribution of organic aerosols to the aerosol liquid water content (ALWC), the influencing factors of ALWC, and the concentrations and size distribution characteristics of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) after clean air actions. The results showed that the concentration of WSOC in particulate matter (PM) 1.8 was 3.52 ± 2.43 μg/m 3 during the sampling period. Obvious changes were observed in the size distribution of WSOC after clean air actions, which may be attributed to the enhancement of atmospheric oxidation capacity and the decrease in PM concentration. The contribution of organic aerosols to the ALWC in fine PM was 18.1 % during the sampling period, which was more significant at lower particles concentration and smaller particle size ranges. The ambient relative humidity (RH) and the ratio of NO 3 - /SO 4 2- had an apparent influence on ALWC. The continuous increase in the nitrate proportion significantly reduced the deliquescence point of the aerosols, making them prone to hygroscopic growth at lower RH. Analysis of the relation among nitrogen oxidation ratio (sulfur oxidation ratio), ALWC and PM 1.8 mass concentrations suggests that organic matter has a significant effect on the formation of secondary inorganic aerosols in the initial phase of pollution formation and plays a crucial role in aerosol pollution formation in Beijing. Manure composting in traditional small-scale pig farms leads to the migration and diffusion of antibiotics and antibiotics resistance genes (ARGs) along the chain of transmission to the surrounding environment, increasing the risk of environmental resistance. Understanding the transmission patterns, driving factors, and health risks of ARGs on small-scale pig farms is important for effective control of ARGs transmission. This study was conducted on a small pig farm and its surrounding environment. The cross-media transmission of ARGs and their risks in the farming habitat were investigated using Metagenomic annotation and qPCR quantitative detection. The results indicate that ARGs in farms spread with manure pile-soil-channel sediment-mudflat sediment. Pig farm manure contributed 22.49 % of the mudflat sediment ARGs. Mobile genetic elements mediate the spread of ARGs across different media. Among them, tnpA and IS26 have the highest degree. Transmission of high-risk ARGs sul1 and tetM resulted in a 50 % and 116 % increase in host risk for sediment, respectively. Megacity Hangzhou, located in eastern China, has experienced severe O 3 pollution in recent years, thereby clarifying the key drivers of the formation is essential to suppress O 3 deterioration. In this study, the ensemble machine learning model (EML) coupled with Shapley additive explanations (SHAP), and positive matrix factorization were used to explore the impact of various factors (including meteorology, chemical components, sources) on O 3 formation during the whole period, pollution days, and typical persistent pollution events from April to October in 2021-2022. The EML model achieved better performance than the single model, with R 2 values of 0.91. SHAP analysis revealed that meteorological conditions had the greatest effects on O 3 variability with the contribution of 57 %-60 % for different pollution levels, and the main drivers were relative humidity and radiation. The effects of chemical factors on O 3 formation presented a positive response to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), and a negative response to nitrogen oxides (NOx). Oxygenated compounds (OVOCs), alkenes, and aromatic of VOCs subgroups had higher contribution; additionally, the effects of PM 2.5 and NOx were also important and increased with the O 3 deterioration. The impact of seven emission sources on O 3 formation in Hangzhou indicated that vehicle exhaust (35 %), biomass combustion (16 %), and biogenic emissions (12 %) were the dominant drivers. However, for the O 3 pollution days, the effects of biomass combustion and biogenic emissions increased. Especially in persistent pollution events with highest O 3 concentrations, the magnitude of biogenic emission effect elevated significantly by 156 % compared to the whole situations. Nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) are primary pollutants produced during biomass combustion. During the devolatilization stage, char nitrogen (char(N)) is formed. In the subsequent char combustion stage, char(N) can decompose directly into NO x precursors or engage in heterogeneous reactions with O 2 or NO to form NO and N 2 . Nonetheless, a comprehensive understanding of the reaction mechanisms and competitiveness of char(N) migration, especially the influence of the alkali metal potassium (K) present in biomass, remains incomplete. Building on the Zigzag char(N) models, the present study delves into the migration reactions of char(N), assessing their competitive dynamics through the integration of density functional theory, electronic structure analysis, and conventional transition state theory. Furthermore, it examines the impact of K on char(N) conversion. The competitiveness of the heterogeneous reactions follows the sequence: heterogeneous reduction of NO to N 2  > heterogeneous oxidation of char(N) to NO > decomposition of char(N) to NO x precursors. Moreover, the formation of HCN is more favorable than NH₃ production. The successive conversion from char(N) to NO and then to N 2 is the predominant migration route for char(N), with NO generation as the pivotal step. The less preferred char(N) migration route involves decomposition to NH 3 /HCN, followed by oxidation to NO x within the main combustion zone, which cannot be mitigated by char. K can accelerate NO generation and sustain the primacy of the heterogeneous NO reduction, consequently enhancing the oxidation-reduction process of char(N). The increase in alien plant invasions poses a major threat to global biodiversity and ecosystem stability. However, the presence of microplastics (MPs) as an environmental stressor could impact the interactions between invasive and native species in an invasive plant community. Nevertheless, the community alterations and underlying mechanisms resulting from these interactions remain unclear. Herein, we systematically investigated the impacts of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) on invasive plant communities invaded by Amaranthus palmeri through soil seed bank. The results illustrated that MPs markedly declined community height and biomass, and altered community structure, low-dose MPs could prominently increase community invasion resistance, but reduced community stability. The niche width and niche overlap of A. palmeri and S. viridis declined when exposed to high-dose MPs, but MPs elicited a significant rise in the niche width of S. salsa. PP had the potential to reduce the diversity of invasive plant community. Structural equation model revealed that PP addition could change soil total phosphorus content, thereby leading to a reduction of the community stability. Emerging contaminants (ECs) have attracted increasing attention in the past two decades because of their ubiquitous existence and high environmental risk. Understanding the progress of research and the evolution of hot topics is critical. This study provides a bibliometric review, along with a quantitative trend analysis of approximately 8000 publication records dated from 2001 to 2021. Wider distribution in various subjects was discovered in terms of publication numbers, indicating a strong tendency for EC research to become an interdisciplinary topic. Visualization of term co-occurrence analysis revealed that the ECs study went through three stages over time: identification and detection, traceability and risk, and process and control. Quantitative trend analysis revealed that antibiotics, microplastics, endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), per/poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pesticides, heavy metals, and nanoparticles are attracting increasing attention, whereas conventional pharmaceuticals, persistent organic pollutants, and materials such as benzotriazole, diclofenac, bisphenol A, carbamazepine, triclosan, and titanium dioxide exhibit a downward trend. PFAS and EDCs are considered potential future core hotspots for the hysteretic rise in research attention compared with conventional ECs. Furthermore, analysis of research linkage and the developing stages of ECs could be possible approach to determine the evolution of hotspots in ECs study. Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) is a typical secondary photochemical product in the atmospheric environment with significant adverse effects on human health and plant growth. In this study, PAN and other pollutants, as well as meteorological conditions were observed intensively from August to September in 2022 at a typical urban sampling site in Beijing, China. The mean and maximum PAN concentrations during the observation period were 1.00 ± 0.97 ppb and 4.84 ppb, respectively. Severe photochemical pollution occurred during the observation period, with the mean PAN concentration about 3.1 times higher than that during the clean period. There was a good positive correlation between O 3 and PAN, and their correlation was higher during the O 3 exposure period than that during the clean period. The simulated results by box-model coupled with the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM v3.3.1) showed that the O 3 -related reactions were the largest sources of OH radicals during O 3 exposure period, which was conducive to the co-contamination of PAN and O 3 . Acetaldehyde (CH 3 CHO) and methylglyoxal (MGLY) were the largest OVOCs precursors of peroxyacetyl radicals (PA), with the contributions to the total PA generated by OVOCs about 67 % - 83 % and 17 % - 30 %, respectively. The reduction of emissions from liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and solvent usage has the highest reduction effect on PAN and O 3 , followed by the control of gasoline vehicle exhaust emissions. This study deepens the understanding of the PAN photochemistry in urban areas with high O 3 background conditions and the impact of anthropogenic activities on the photochemical pollution. Antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) spread in anthropogenic polluted soils is believed to be accelerated by the incidental inputs of antibiotics via fertilizing and irrigation, and endangering food and human health. However, due to the complex nature of substrates and uncertain microbial responses, the primary drivers of ARG dissemination remain unclear. To address this concern, the effects of antibiotic inputs on soil microbes and antibiotic resistance under simulated natural conditions was investigated in this study. Specifically, four flow-through reactors with gravity flow were established, and the oxytetracycline (OTC) a typical antibiotic in agricultural soils was studied at environmental concentrations (i.e. 0.1, 1 and 10 mg/kg) for 31 days. The vertical distribution and dissipation of OTC were profiled by measuring the residuals in layers over time. Correspondingly, the effects of antibiotic exposure on microbial communities and ARG abundances were studied. The results showed that the average exposure intensity of OTC in different soil layers ranged in 0.03-6.45 mg/kg, and resulted in different dissipation kinetics. In addition, top layer was found to be the main site of OTC reduction, where OTC dissipated at magnitude of 74.0-96.6 %, depending on the initial OTC concentration. OTC migration and dissipation resulted in the shift of community composition to the extent of 0.25-0.33 in terms of Bray-Curtis distance, which partially recovered over time. And the achievement of alternative community compositions was supposed to be largely affected by the microbial interaction. Along with the community changes, a short-term accumulation of resistance genes was detected, while the relative abundance of indicator ARGs, i.e. tetG and mexB, rising up to 10-fold higher than the initial, although eventually decayed. Collective findings of this study indicated that antibiotics at environmental concentrations might trigger extra microbial interactions and thereby reducing the demand for ARGs accumulation. Rivers display essential role in nitrogen (N) cycling in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, but now they are suffering from damming worldwide, especially from cascade damming. Despite of the importance of microorganisms in biogeochemical nutrient cycling, little attention has been paid to microbial functional biogeography under damming disturbances. Here, the Geochip microarray was applied to investigate the microbial mediated N cycling across the single-dammed Yarlung Tsangpo-Brahmaputra River and the cascade-dammed Lancang-Mekong River in southwest China. Our results showed that the N cycling processes (nitrogen fixation, ammonification, denitrification, nitrification and anammox) were stimulated in reservoirs in both rivers and the enhancement was inversely coupled with hydraulic retention time, but the recovery of N-cycling gene abundance in downstream of dam was intervened by cascade damming. Moreover, N-cycling gene composition was significantly altered in the single-dammed river, while no remarkable change was found in the cascade-dammed reaches. However, different from the unvaried gene composition, cascade damming intervened the recovery of N-cycling gene flow connectivity and resulted in the continuous decrease of connectivity in cascade damming reaches. In addition, in the single-dammed river, nutrients were the important drivers for variation in gene abundance, while they did not influence gene composition. Meanwhile, the abundance and composition of N-cycling genes in the cascade-dammed river were both significantly correlated to geographical parameters and water physical characteristics. Due to the nonlinear impacts of meteorology and precursors, the response of ozone (O 3 ) trends to emission changes is very complex over different regions in megacity Beijing. Based on long-term in-situ observations at 35 air quality sites (four categories, i.e., urban, traffic, northern suburban and southern suburban sites) and satellite data, spatiotemporal variability of O 3 , gaseous precursors, and O 3 -VOCs-NO x sensitivity were explored through multiple metrics during the warm season from 2013 to 2020. Additionally, the contribution of meteorology and emissions to O 3 was separated by a machine-learning-based de-weathered method. The annual averaged MDA8 O 3 and O 3 increased by 3.7 and 2.9 μg/m 3 /yr, respectively, with the highest at traffic sites and the lowest in northern suburb, and the rate of O x (O 3  + NO 2 ) was 0.2 μg/m 3 /yr with the highest in southern suburb, although NO 2 declined strongly and HCHO decreased slightly. However, the increment of O 3 and O x in the daytime exhibited decreasing trends to some extent. Additionally, NO x abatements weakened O 3 loss through less NO titration, which drove narrowing differences in urban-suburban O 3 and O x . Due to larger decrease of NO 2 in urban region and HCHO in northern suburb, the extent of VOCs-limited regime fluctuated over Beijing and northern suburb gradually shifted to transition or NO x -limited regime. Compared with the directly observed trends, the increasing rate of de-weathered O 3 was lower, which was attributed to favorable meteorological conditions for O 3 generation after 2017, especially in June (the most polluted month); whereas the de-weathered O x declined except in southern suburb. Overall, clean air actions were effective in reducing the atmospheric oxidation capacity in urban and northern suburban regions, weakening local photochemical production over Beijing and suppressing O 3 deterioration in northern suburb. Expanding aquaculture has generated pollutants like fishery drugs in wastewater, which affects the aquatic environments and hinders sustainable development of aquaculture. To evaluate the occurrence, mass fluxes and production factors of fishery drugs in aquaculture, full-aquaculture-cycle monitoring in finfish and crustacean wastewater was conducted in the lower Yangtze River Basin, and 28 pesticides and 15 antibiotics were detected. The results showed that individual fishery drugs varied from ppt to ppb levels. Among them, sulfonamides were dominant with a mean concentration of 105.95 ± 4.13 ng·L -1 in finfish aquacultural wastewater, and insecticides were prevailing in crustacean aquacultural wastewater with a content of 146.56 ± 0.66 ng·L -1 . Since the susceptibility to finfish disease determined the aquaculture practice, there were significant differences between two types of aquacultural wastewater. Finfish aquacultural wastewater contained more drugs and reached peak earlier in rapid-growth period, yet crustacean aquacultural wastewater peaked at the harvest period, to prevent against disease. Meanwhile, higher ecological risk, especially for florfenicol, were found in finfish wastewater. With 6 production factors from Good Aquaculture Practice, the gross yield was the most influential factor of drug mass flux, explaining 98 % variance by stepwise regression. Apart from increasing concentrations of fishery drugs in wastewater, regional high-yield aquaculture also significantly impacted the corresponding mass flux. As estimated by linear regression, 1.63 tons of target drugs would be discharged by 1 Mt. aquatic products, and 7.77 tons were discharged from aquaculture in the lower Yangtze River Basin in 2021. Remote sensing is an important tool for monitoring soil information. However, accurate spatial modeling of soil organic matter (SOM) in areas with high vegetation coverage, typically represented by agroecosystems, remains a challenge for field-scale estimation using remote sensing. To date, studies have focused on using single-period or multi-temporal vegetation information to characterize SOM. Thus, the relationship between SOM content and time-series vegetation biomass has not yet been fully explored. In addition, most studies have ignored the effects of critical soil properties and human activities (e.g., soil salinization, soil particle size fractions, history of land-use changes) on SOM. By integrating information on vegetation, soil, and human activities, we propose a novel framework for assessing SOM in cotton fields of artificial oases in northwest China, where returned straw is one of the primary sources of SOM coming from vegetation. We developed an Annual Maximum Biomass Accumulation Index (AMBAI) using time-series Landsat images from 1990 to 2019. Subsequently, we quantified the information of the planting years (PY) of cropland using spectral index threshold and incorporated proximal sensing data (soil hyperspectral and apparent conductivity data) and soil particle size fractions to establish a predictive model of SOM using partial least squares regression (PLSR), random forest (RF), and convolutional neural network (CNN). The results revealed that AMBAI had the highest correlation coefficient (r) with SOM (0.76, P < 0.01). AMBAI, soil hyperspectral data, and PY were the most relevant predictors for estimating SOM. The CNN model integrating vegetation, soil, and human activity information performed best, with coefficient of determination (R 2 ), relative analysis error (RPD), and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.83, 2.38 and 1.38 g kg -1 , respectively. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), assembling through covalent bonds, are a rising class of porous materials. Nowadays, various COFs are widely applied in organic pollutants decontamination due to the outstanding capabilities of large surface area, multiple functional groups, porous structure, excellent absorptivity, flexible design and so on. This review concentrates on the applications of COFs in different decontamination technologies such as solid-phase extraction, membrane filtration and sieving, adsorption, and catalysis reaction. The factors influencing water chemistry, such as pH, temperature, salt concentration and natural organic matter, are summarized in terms of their impact on decontamination performance and the extraction mechanisms for the diverse analytes. The interaction mechanisms between COFs and organic pollutants were hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, hydrophilic, hydrophobic, and electrostatic interactions. Furthermore, a perspective on current obstacles and upcoming developments of COFs for organic pollutant removal has been provided. This study aimed to explore the assembly, interaction mode, and stability of anammox community influenced by two siderophores (enterobactin and putrebactin) specific for Ca. Brocadia and Ca. Kuenenia as produced in our previous research. Siderophores improved the stability of the anammox community, among which vulnerability dropped by 30.02 % and 72.53 % respectively. Enterobactin and putrebactin altered the succession speed and assembly pattern of communities, with a respective increase of 9.77 % and 80.87 % in the deterministic process of anammox community assembly, respectively. Enterobactin and putrebactin reduced the dependence of Ca. Brocadia and Ca. Kuenenia on companion bacteria by 60 items and 27 items respectively. The affinity of different siderophore-Fe with bacterial membrane receptors caused variations in community reconstruction, with Ca. Brocadia and Ca. Kuenenia exhibiting the highest affinity with enterobactin-Fe (-11.4 kcal/mol) and putrebactin-Fe (-9.0 kcal/mol), respectively. It is thought remediating cadmium pollution with biochar can affect plant traits. However, the potential impact of this practice on plant communities is poorly understood. Here, we established natural-germinated plant communities using soil seed bank from a saline-alkaline wetland and applied a biochar treatment in Cd-polluted wetland soil. The outcomes illustrated that Juglans regia biochar (JBC), Spartina alterniflora biochar (SBC), and Flaveria bidentis biochar (FBC) promoted exchangeable Cd transform into FeMn oxide bound Cd. Additionally, most biochar addition reduced species abundance, root-shoot ratio, biomass, diversity, and community stability, yet enhanced community height. Among all treatments, the 5 % SBC demonstrated the most significant reduction in species abundance, biomass, species richness and functional richness. Specifically, it resulted in a reduction of 92.80 % in species abundance, 73.80 % in biomass, 66.67 % in species richness, and 95.14 % in functional richness compared to the CK. We also observed changes in root morphological traits and community structure after biochar addition. Soil pH, salinity, and nutrients played a dominant role in shaping plant community. Two ozone (O 3 ) processes, summer episode dominated by local production and autumn episode dominated by regional transport, were chosen to investigate the role of HONO in different pollution processes. Meteorological conditions, diurnal variation of O 3 , potential source contribution factor (PSCF) analysis, concentration weighted trajectory (CWT) models, and the distribution of the eight-hour maximum values of O 3 on mainland China all prove that summer O 3 was mainly locally generated while autumn O 3 episode was more susceptible to regional transport. The gaps between observations and simulation results with the default HONO chemistry in Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM) of Observation Based Model (OBM) were higher in summer episode (0.58 ppb) than autumn episode (0.37 ppb). Although we implemented nine additional sources in the model to revise the HONO chemistry, the simulated values were still lower than the observed values. HONO promoted O 3 production by accelerating the reaction of HO 2  + NO and RO 2  + NO, and promoted loss of O 3 by the reaction of OH + NO 2 and RO 2  + NO 2 . The net production rate of O 3 with HONO constraint increased by 28.50 % in summer and 22.43 % in autumn, which also indicated that HONO played more important role in the O 3 production in summer. The difference of NOx of daily RIR between the cases with and without HONO constraint was higher in summer O 3 episode (0.15 %/%) than that in autumn O 3 episode (0.09 %/%), the same as to VOCs with -0.20 %/% in summer O 3 episode and - 0.14 %/% in autumn O 3 episode, which indicated that the presence or absence of the HONO constraint has a greater impact on the RIR value in the case of dominant local generation. Ethylhexyl salicylate (EHS) is an organic UV filter commonly used in sunscreens to protect people from the UV radiation. The widespread use of EHS will enter the aquatic environment along with human activities. EHS readily accumulates in adipose tissue as a lipophilic compound, but its toxic effects on lipid metabolism and cardiovascular system of aquatic organisms have not been studied. This study investigated the effects of EHS on lipid metabolism and cardiovascular development during zebrafish embryogenesis. The results showed that EHS caused defects such as pericardial edema, cardiovascular dysplasia, lipid deposition, ischemia, and apoptosis in zebrafish embryos. In addition, qPCR and whole-mount in situ hybridization (WISH) results indicated that EHS treatment significantly altered the expression of genes related to cardiovascular development, lipid metabolism, erythropoiesis, and apoptosis. The hypolipidemic drug rosiglitazone was able to alleviate the cardiovascular defects caused by EHS, indicating that EHS affected cardiovascular development by disrupting lipid metabolism. In addition, severe ischemia caused by cardiovascular abnormalities and apoptosis were observed in the EHS-treated embryos, which was likely to be the main cause of embryonic mortality. In conclusion, this study shows that EHS has toxic effects on lipid metabolism and cardiovascular formation. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have captured immense attention due to their widespread existence and remarkable ability to spread across species boundaries. Plasmid carriage promotes the persistence and spread of ARGs in the environment. To investigate the prevalence of plasmids, we conducted serial passage experiments on Pseudomonas putida KT2442 with multidrug-resistant plasmid RP4::gfp in the presence of tetracycline (TC) in an environmentally relevant concentration. The results showed that TC in environmental concentration compensated the fitness cost brought by the plasmid, prolonged the persistence time of the plasmid-bearing strain, and induced the reoccurrence of plasmids after the window time of plasmid loss. Transcriptome sequencing showed that plasmid recovery was compensated by the up-regulation of glyoxylic acid shunt and the down-regulation of ribosome biosynthesis. It is therefore hypothesized that transcriptional modifications may enhance the persistence of resistant plasmids within the population in the presence of TC in an environmentally relevant concentration. During COVID-19 pandemic, chemicals from excessive consumption of pharmaceuticals and disinfectants i.e., antibiotics, quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), and trihalomethanes (THMs), flowed into the urban environment, imposing unprecedented selective pressure to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). To decipher the obscure character pandemic-related chemicals portrayed in altering environmental AMR, 40 environmental samples covering water and soil matrix from surroundings of Wuhan designated hospitals were collected on March 2020 and June 2020. Chemical concentrations and antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) profiles were revealed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and metagenomics. Selective pressure from pandemic-related chemicals ascended by 1.4-5.8 times in March 2020 and then declined to normal level of pre-pandemic period in June 2020. Correspondingly, the relative abundance of ARGs under increasing selective pressure was 20.1 times that under normal selective pressure. Moreover, effect from QACs and THMs in aggravating the prevalence of AMR was elaborated by null model, variation partition and co-occurrence network analyses. Pandemic-related chemicals, of which QACs and THMs respectively displayed close interaction with efflux pump genes and mobile genetic elements, contributed >50 % in shaping ARG profile. QACs bolstered the cross resistance effectuated by qacEΔ1 and cmeB to 3.0 times higher while THMs boosted horizon ARG transfer by 7.9 times for initiating microbial response to oxidative stress. Under ascending selective pressure, qepA encoding quinolone efflux pump and oxa-20 encoding β-lactamases were identified as priority ARGs with potential human health risk. As emerging organic pollutants, parabens are of global concern because of their ubiquitous presence and adverse effects. However, few researchers have addressed the relationship between parabens' structural features and toxicity mechanisms. This study conducted theoretical calculations and laboratory exposure experiments to uncover the toxic effects and mechanisms of parabens with different alkyl chains in freshwater biofilms. The result demonstrated that parabens' hydrophobicity and lethality increased with their alkyl-chain length, whereas the possibility of chemical reactions and reactive sites were unchanged despite the alkyl-chain length alteration. Due to the hydrophobicity variation, parabens with different alkyl-chain presented different distribution patterns in cells of freshwater biofilms and consequently induced distinct toxic effects and led to diverse cell death modes. The butylparaben with longer alkyl-chain preferred to stay in the membrane and altered membrane permeability by non-covalent interaction with phospholipid, which caused cell necrosis. The methylparaben with shorter alkyl-chain preferred to enter into the cytoplasm and influence mazE gene expression by chemically reacting with biomacromolecules, thereby triggering apoptosis. The different cell death patterns induced by parabens contributed to different ecological hazards associated with antibiotic resistome. With the rapid development of industrialization and agriculture, a series of critical imminent environmental problems and water pollution have caught wide attention from the public and society. Piezoelectric catalysis technology with piezoelectric materials is a green and environmental method that can efficiently improve the separation of electron-hole pairs, then generating the active substances such as OH, H 2 O 2 and O 2 - , which can degrade water pollutants. Therefore, we firstly surveyed the piezoelectric catalysis in piezoelectric materials and systematically concluded and emphasized the relationship between piezoelectric materials and the piezoelectric catalytic mechanism, the goal to elucidate the effect of polarization on piezoelectric catalytic performance and enhance piezoelectric catalytic performance. Fine particle pollution is still a severe issue in the northwestern region of China where the formation mechanism of which remains ambiguous due to the limited studies there. In this study, a comprehensive study on the chemical composition and sources of PM 2.5 at an ex-heavily polluted northwestern city was conducted, based on filter sampling data obtained from three consecutive winter campaigns during 2020-2022. The average PM 2.5 during the three winter campaigns were 170.9 ± 66.4, 249.0 ± 75.7, and 200.9 ± 47.6 μg/m 3 , respectively, with the daily maximum value of PM 2.5 exceeds 400 μg/m 3 under stagnant meteorological conditions charactered by high relative humidity (>60 %) and low wind speed (<1 m/s). The major chemical components in PM 2.5 were found to be inorganic aerosol (55.2 %) that mainly constituted by sulfate (24.2 %), and mineral dust (14.9 %); while the carbonous species contributed a minor fraction (∼13 %). In addition, (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 and NH 4 NO 3 were the dominate contributors to appearance of low visibility (<3 km) which together accounting for over 85 % of light extinction coefficient (b ext ) during heavy polluted period. Source appointment of fine particles was then conducted by applying the positive matrix factorization method, and the primary sources were resolved to be coal combustion (27.7 %) and biomass burning (18.6 %), followed by industrial dust (16.2 %), residential combustion (15.3 %), traffic emissions (11.9 %) and dust aerosol (10.4 %). The greenhouse gas methane in soils has been considered to be consumed mainly by aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria for a long time. In the last decades, the discovery of anaerobic methanotrophs greatly complemented the methane cycle, but their contribution rates and ecological significance in soils remain undescribed. In this work, the soil samples from forest, grassland and cropland in four different climatic regions were collected to investigate these conventional and novel methanotrophs. A dual-core microbial methane sink, responsible for over 80 % of soil methane emission reduction, was unveiled. The aerobic core was performed by aerobic methanotrophic bacteria in topsoil, who played important roles in stabilizing bacterial communities. The anaerobic core was denitrifying methanotrophs in anoxic soils, including denitrifying methanotrophic bacteria from NC10 phylum and denitrifying methanotrophic archaea from ANME-2d clade. They were ubiquitous in terrestrial soils and potentially led to around 50 % of the total methane removal. Human activities such as livestock farming and rice cultivation further promoted the contribution rates of these denitrifying methanotrophs. Understanding the spatial variability of soil organic matter (SOM), soil total nitrogen (STN), soil total phosphorus (STP), and soil total potassium (STK) is important to support site-specific agronomic management, food production, and climate change adaptation. High-resolution remote sensing imageries have emerged as an innovative solution to investigate the spatial variation in agricultural soils with machine learning (ML) algorithms. However, the predictive power of the individual and combined effects of Sentinel-1 (S1) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and Sentinel-2 (S2) multispectral images for mapping soil properties, especially STN, STP, and STK, have rarely been investigated. Moreover, single ML model may achieve unstable performance for predicting multiple soil properties due to strong spatial heterogeneity. This study explored the combine use of S1, S2, and DEM derivatives to map SOM, STN, STP, and STK content of a sloped cropland of northeastern China. A two-step method with a weighted sum of four ML models was proposed to improve the accuracy and robustness in predicting multiple soil properties. Our results showed that single ML model has various performance in predicting the four soil properties. The optimal ML models could explain approximately 56 %, 53 %, 56 % and 37 % of the variability of SOM, STN, STP, and STK, respectively. Using the weights estimated through a 10-fold cross-validation procedure, the two-step ensemble learning model was retrained and showed more robust performance than the four ML models, in which the prediction accuracy was improved by 2.38 %, 1.40 %, 3.52 %, and 3.29 % for SOM, STN, STP, and STK, respectively. Our results also showed that the optical S2 derived features, especially the two S2 short-wave infrared bands, enhanced vegetation index, and soil adjusted vegetation index, were more important for soil property prediction than S1 data and DEM derivatives. Compared with individual sensor, a combination of S1 and S2 data yielded more accurate predictions of STN and STP but not for SOM and STK. Cadmium (Cd) contamination in rivers or lakes has attracted worldwide concerns. Biochar pyrolyzed form crop residues (CR) could adsorb Cd(II) from aquatic environments, while the removal capacity of single CR biochar is relatively low. Nano-chlorapatite (nClAP) modification can enhance metal scavenging ability, but little is known about the behaviors and mechanisms of Cd(II) adsorption by nClAP-modified CR biochars. In this study, the influences of feedstock type, pyrolysis temperature, nClAP modification and aquatic environments on Cd(II) adsorption of biochars derived from rice (RB) and wheat (WB) husks were investigated comprehensively. Results showed that the pristine RB and WB showed low and similar Cd(II) adsorption capacities, while the rise of pyrolysis temperatures from 300 to 600 °C significantly improved the adsorption capacities. The Cd(II) adsorption of both RB and WB was regarded as monolayer chemical processes controlled by chemical precipitation, surface complexation and cation exchange mechanisms. Moreover, the nClAP modification notably enhanced Cd(II) adsorption capacities from 13.2 to 39.9 mg·g -1 of pristine biochars to 25.2-60.7 mg·g -1 of modified biochars attributed to the improved contribution of Cd(II)-phosphate precipitation. Among all biochars, the nClAP-modified RB and WB pyrolyzed at 500 °C had the highest Cd(II) adsorption capacities with 60.7 and 48.3 mg·g -1 , respectively. These biochars could maintain good adsorption performances under the neutral-alkaline (pH 6-8), low ionic strength, high dissolved organic matter and all oxidation-reduction potential conditions. Soil is the main natural reservoir of antibiotic resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Their dissemination and proliferation were largely motivated by conjugative transfer, while the influence of soil components on bacterial conjugative transfer and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In the present study, two Escherichia coli strains were exposed to soil minerals (quartz, kaolinite and montmorillonite) and organic matters (humic acid, biochar and soot) respectively to investigate their impact on ARGs conjugation. The results showed that quartz had no significant effect on conjugation; montmorillonite promoted the growth of the donor, but inhibited the recipient and conjugant; kaolinite and three organic matters significantly promoted the production of conjugant, while biochar promoted and then inhibited it with time prolong. Within the range of bacterial concentration involved in this study, the concentration of conjugant increased with the ratio of the concentration of donor and recipient (R D/R ), indicating that the variation of conjugant production was mainly mediated by changing R D/R . Further observation of biochar treatment group showed that the bacterial responses such as cell membrane permeability, cell surface hydrophobicity and biofilm formation ability shifted with the exposure time, which might be a potential factor affecting conjugative transfer. Natural colloids are important in mobilizing pollutants in aquatic environments. This study investigated the mobilization and aggregation of natural colloids during the sediment resuspension and re-sedimentation processes using nanoparticle tracking analysis. The metals and organic matter in overlying water were divided and examined in dissolved (<0.45 μm), colloidal (3 kDa - 0.45 μm), and truly dissolved (<3 kDa) forms. Excitation emission matrix-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) was used to characterize the dissolved organic matter (DOM). In overlying water, most natural colloids were < 200 nm before resuspension. An evident mobilization of colloids and an increase in colloid size were observed during resuspension. The formation of particles (>0.45 μm) and decreases of small colloids (<200 nm) indicated that resuspension promoted the aggregation of colloids. Mobilization of colloids was accompanied by increases in concentrations of Fe, Al, and organic carbon in colloidal fractions, which could be related to the formation of mineral-organic complexes under an oxic environment. The release of DOM from sediments mainly contributed to the truly dissolved humic-like fraction, and colloidal organic carbon accounted for, on average, 20 % of the total dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Fe and Al had the highest colloidal proportions as they are major compositions of inorganic colloids. Substantial removal of dissolved Al, Fe, Pb, and Zn occurred when colloids aggregated in the overlying water. Although the adsorption of suspended particles may also decrease the concentrations of dissolved metals, the increased proportions of colloidal metals indicated a possible role of colloids in this process. Recently, mixed bromine/chlorine transformation products of tetrabromobisphenol A (Cl y Br x BPAs) were found to be possibly related to the thermal treatment processes of electronic wastes. To explore their emission characteristics and formation mechanism, printed circuit board scraps were combusted in a tube furnace, under the temperature from 25 °C to 600 °C. The emission factor of the debromination products of tetrabromobisphenol A (Br x BPAs) was the highest, whereas that of Cl y Br x BPAs was the lowest. Among three phases, most of the target compounds were partitioned into the oil and particle phases, and only negligible gaseous 2-BrBPA and bisphenol A were detected. The emission rates of most compounds were fastest at 300 °C, although 2-BrBPA, 2,6-Br 2 BPA, and 2-Cl-6-BrBPA peaked at 350 °C. Among the chemicals in total emission, 2-BrBPA was the dominant congener in Br x BPAs, whereas 2-Cl-2',6,6'-Br 3 BPA, 2-Cl-2',6 # -Br 2 BPA, and Σ 2 Cl 1 Br 1 BPAs shared similar proportions in Cl y Br x BPAs. Meanwhile, the composition profiles at 300 °C showed that 2,2',6-Br 3 BPA and 2-Cl-2',6,6'-Br 3 BPA occupied the largest proportions in Br x BPAs and Cl y Br x BPAs, respectively. To reveal the possible transformation pathways, the Gibbs free energy was calculated based on a radical substitution reaction. After "•Br" removal from tetrabromobisphenol A or other Br x BPAs, the intermediate was more easily combined with "•H" than with "•Cl." In addition, the Cl y Br x BPA formation via "-•H + •Cl" by Br x BPAs is nonspontaneous, thus limiting the further generation of Cl y Br x BPAs. Increased aridity creates challenges for sustainable ecosystem management due to the potential for trade-offs among ecosystem services. However, our understanding of how ecosystem service trade-offs (EST) respond to aridification remains limited. Here, generalized additive models and structural equation modeling were used to explore EST dynamics within an aridity gradient on the Loess Plateau, China. Trade-offs between water yield and both carbon storage and habitat quality showed nonlinear relationships with aridity, first increasing and then decreasing. Interestingly, climatic and human factors mostly indirectly influenced EST via effects on landscape characteristics. In regions with an Aridity Index (AI) value of <0.5, climatic and human factors strongly drove EST; in regions with AI > 0.5, landscape characteristics were most important. Therefore, landscape characteristics acted as the key regulators of EST. Importantly, AI values of ∼0.5 represented a transition point, after which dramatic shifts in EST-driver relationships were observed. As >22 % of the Earth's terrestrial surface is projected to reach this level of aridity by 2100, further research on this boundary (between sub-humid and semi-arid areas) is urgently needed to protect ecosystems from the effects of increasing aridity. Single-cell studies can help to understand individual differences and obtain atypical cellular characteristics in view of cellular heterogeneity. Herein, the accumulation of mercury (Hg) in single algae cells was studied by droplet chip-time resolved inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analytical system, and the relation of Hg accumulation to the physiological responses of algae cell was explored. When low concentrations of Hg 2+ (5-20 μg/L) were used in the exposure experiment, the content of Hg in single cells increased in first 2 h, then decreased with further increase of exposure time to 96 h, probably due to the growth dilution effect of the algae. When exposed to 30 μg/L Hg 2+ , the uptake of Hg by individual cells increased over time, which was associated with increased cell membrane permeability. The exposure to Hg 2+ (5-30 μg/L) inhibited the growth of algae in a concentration-dependent manner and serious growth inhibition occurred under the exposure concentration of 30 μg/L. While the exposure concentration was lower than 20 μg/L, algal cells exhibited a recover tendency due to the self-protection mechanism of algal cells. Bivariate results showed that intracellular Hg accumulation was significantly negatively correlated with cells growth in terms of OD 680 , photosynthetic pigments, F v /F m and PI abs . On the contrast, reactive oxygen species content, superoxide dismutase activity, and cell membrane permeability were significantly positively correlated with the accumulation of intracellular Hg. Benzotriazole UV stabilizer-329 (UV-329) is frequently detected in various environmental and biological matrices. However, the toxicity effect on freshwater benthos induced by UV-329 has rarely been described. In this study, genotoxicity, apoptosis, oxidative stress, histopathological alterations, siphoning behavior, and bioaccumulation in the gill and digestive gland of Corbicula fluminea exposed to UV-329 at 10, 100, and 1000 μg/L for 21 days were investigated. Toxicity screening using transcriptomics confirmed that UV-329 preferentially stimulated cellular process-related pathways including gap junctions, apoptosis, phagosomes and necroptosis. The transcript levels of a large number of apoptosis genes were significantly upregulated. This apoptosis mechanism was further confirmed by the fact that UV-329 exposure significantly increased the percentage of apoptotic cells, activated caspase-3, -8, and -9, and affected the antioxidant enzyme activities. Following exposure to 1000 μg/L UV-329, significant histological alterations were reflected in the corrosion of cilia, cellular swelling of epithelial cells in the gills, degeneration of digestive tubules, and necrosis of epithelial cells in the digestive glands. The impact of aerosols on ozone via influencing photolysis rates is a combined effect of absorbing aerosols (AA) and scattering aerosols (SA). However, AA and SA show different optical properties and influence photolysis rates differently, which then cause different impacts on ozone. Till now, the dominate factor is disconfirmed, which is largely due to the impact of SA on ozone not reaching to a consistent conclusion. In this study, the WRF-Chem model was implemented to simulate the air pollutants over the North China Plain (NCP). The impacts of AA and SA on ozone via influencing photolysis rates were quantitatively isolated and analyzed. Our results also demonstrated the decreasing effect of AA on ozone within planet boundary layer (PBL) which is consistent with the conclusions of previous studies. But for SA, it decreased the ozone chemical contribution (CHEM) near surface but increased which in the upper layers of PBL, that enlarge the ozone vertical gradients. In this case, more vertical exchanges of ozone would occur with the effect of vertical mixing motion of atmosphere, then the opposite CHEM variations were counteracted with each other and finally led to very slight changes in ozone within PBL. Thus, it can be summarized that AA dominate this impact of aerosols on ozone. Reducing AA could cause a general increase in ozone (ΔO 3 ) over the NCP. Based on the aerosol levels of this case, ΔO 3 would be seen over 86 % of the areas in the NCP when reducing AA by 3/4 and ΔO 3 was more significant in the megacities. A large number of plastic wastes generated eventually end up in landfills. The leachate from landfills has become a potential destination for microplastics (MPs). Many researchers have turned their attention to the distribution of MPs in landfill leachate. However, rare researchers mentioned that the efficient removal of MPs in landfill leachate was hard to realized. In this work, we analyzed MPs distribution and composition in leachate from a municipal landfill. Subsequently, to understand the causes of hydrophilization of MPs in leachate, we investigated the flotation percentage of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polystyrene (PS) MPs when exposure to p-benzoquinone and Cu 2+ . We conducted experiments on factors including the concentration of pollutants, pH, and interaction time. Meanwhile, the adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms, and synergistic effects of p-benzoquinone and Cu 2+ were further investigated. The order of the strength of the hydrophilic effect of contaminants on MPs in leachate was p-benzoquinone + Cu 2+ > p-benzoquinone > Cu 2+ . The physisorption and chemisorption of p-benzoquinone and Cu 2+ on the MPs surface, respectively, resulted in the hydrophilization of the MPs surface. The order of hydrophilization and the adsorption capacity for pollutants of the three MPs were consistent: PVC > > PET ≈ PS. We proposed a feasible scheme with the oleic acid to restore the hydrophobicity of MPs, which could increase the removal rate of MPs by 87.37 %.
