Levulinic acid wastewater containing high concentration of sulfate was generated while producing levulinic acid by straw depolymerization with dilute sulfuric acid. In this study, levulinic acid wastewater was pretreated by calcium hydroxide precipitation, then co-digestion of pretreated levulinic acid wastewater and corn stalk was conducted for the further removal of sulfate from levulinic acid wastewater and production of bioenergy. Effects of sulfate loading and substrate level on methane production and sulfate removal from co-digestion were investigated. The results showed that the highest methane production potential of 249.93 mL/g volatile solid (VS) was achieved when the sulfate loading is 0.31 g/L and the substrate level is 32.3 g/L, which was significantly higher than 182.53 mL/g VS achieved for mono-digestion of corn stalk. The sulfate removal of 86.82–98.10% was obtained when sulfate loading is >0.31 g/L, and the concentration of sulfate in the biogas slurry was <0.09 g/L after 28 days of anaerobic co-digestion regardless initial sulfate loading. The results of microbial community analysis demonstrated that the relative abundance of methanogenic bacteria (such as Methanoculleus and Methanosarcina) had increased significantly at sulfate loading of 0.31 g/L, and the relative abundance of sulfate-reducing bacteria (Desulfotomaculum) increased from 0.01% to 2.11% when the sulfate loading rose from 0.10 g/L to 1.47 g/L under the substrate level of 32.3 g/L. This means that co-digestion of corn stalk and levulinic acid wastewater after calcium hydroxide pretreatment (CHP) was beneficial for methane production and sulfate removal. Energy production based on the proper allocation of environmental liabilities is in line with the concept of sustainability. Flotation sludge (S) is a type of waste derived from the physical treatment of the wastewater generated in significant quantities during chicken slaughter in Brazil. If not treated, this wastewater may contribute to pollution, but further treatment provides clean energy and nutrient recycling. The present study aimed at evaluating the reduction of (S) organic load by means of mono and co-digestion with sweet potatoes (P) while promoting its conversion into energy (methane) and nutrients (digestate). Semi-continuous reactors (60 L capacity) were used with a hydraulic retention time of 25 days. The reactors were fed daily with 2.4 L consisting of 60% digestate recirculation, 40% non-chlorinated water and 4.5% total solids (TS). Using nine reactors and six progressive periods, eleven conditions were evaluated with three replicates each. The percentages of (P) and (S) varied from 0 to 100. The best observed condition in terms of energy recovery and TS removal was 60% of P + 40% of S (p ≤ 0.05), as it presented values of at least an increase of 92% in total biogas volume, an increase of 123% in specific methane production, an increase of 98% in specific methane yield and an increase of 44% in TS removal efficiency compared to mono-digestions. The fertilizer potential of the digestate generated in the different conditions was calculated and evaluated according to the area of (P) production. The results varied from 3.6 to 10.8 ha of (P) using 100 m3 of digestate. A multivariate analysis showed that higher amounts of (P) in substrate composition favor energy recycling while higher concentrations of (S) enhance the production of a digestate with valuable agronomic characteristics. Abstract Biosolids or sludge management has become an environmental and economic challenge for water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) and municipalities around the world. The electric energy and operational costs linked to the solid processing stage can account for 20% and 53% of the overall treatment respectively, and as such they are primary factors among utilities which must be considered while working toward more efficient strategies with less energy use. As part of the growing awareness of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, municipal wastewater treatment plants have begun reporting their GHG emission inventories. However, there is not yet a standardized or fully comprehensive CFP analysis for the biosolids management. In this paper, two major metropolitan WRRFs in China and the USA with two different biosolids management approaches were compared in terms of energy and carbon footprint (CFP). Site-specific equipment inventories coupled with state-of-the-art methodologies were used for the carbon and energy intensity assessment. Tailored biosolids management strategies and scenarios were included in the analysis to provide a venue for the reduction of their environmental impact. Co-digestion with food waste (FW) and the economic feasibility of its implementation were proposed as a GHGs mitigation strategy to highlight the energy recovery potential. Although both plants had similar energy intensity, Plant A (Shanghai) exhibited three times larger CFP primarily due to site-specific limitations on their biosolids management. The study showed the potential to improve CFP by 28.8% by selecting convenient strategies (i.e., incineration with AD). Energy recovery with its concurrent environmental benefits can be further enhanced by implementing FW co-digestion. This study shows the economic and environmental relevance of selecting adequate biosolids processing strategies and energy recovery practices in WRRFs. In order to optimize the biogas recovery from the co-digestion of food waste (FW) and paper waste (PW), the effect of PW content on two-phase anaerobic digestion (TPAD) was investigated. The mixtures of FW and PW, with the ratios of 10:0, 8:2, 6:4 and 5:5 (total solids), were fed into TPAD to recover biomethane. After the long-term expriment, it is elucidated that the methanogenesis in TPAD was stable for PW ≤ 40%. When PW = 50%, NH 4 HCO 3 was added to the methanogenic phase to provide nitrogen. As the indicators of the stability of the anaerobic process, the ammonia and alkalinity in the methanogenic phase were simulated for their decreasing trend. The simulation results quantified the nitrogen deficiency in the methanogenic phase for PW = 50%. Also, the comparison of alkalinity and ammonia revealed that ammonia was the major contributor to the alkalinity. Furthermore, via stoichiometric calculations, high C/N ratios were found to increase the microbial yield and exacerbated the nitrogen deficiency. In the energy estimation, adding PW showed significant increase only when PW ≥ 40%. A series of batch anaerobic digestion assays were implemented to determine the influence of total solids concentration on the anaerobic digestion of sugar beet by-products and their co-digestion with two kind of livestock manures (pig and cow manures). The two total solid concentrations studied were 8% and 5%. Total solids contents above 8% were not evaluated because of the inappropriate rheological behaviour of sugar beet by-products at these concentrations. The best total solid content tested corresponded to 8%, achieving specific methane yields of 464.3 and 451.4 mL/g VS added for co-digestion with pig manure and cow manure respectively. These data were 1.5 times higher than that obtained for reactors operating with 5% total solids content. For individual digestion of sugar beet by-products, final methane yields operating at 8% were also higher than those measured at 5% total solids concentration. However, in these tests, a large delay in the start of biogas production was registered due to the inhibition caused by the accumulation of volatile fatty acids. Coal gasification wastewater (CGW) contains high concentration phenols which lead to poor anaerobic biodegradability and resource utilization. In this paper, new insights to improve synthetic CGW anaerobic degradation with the help of graphene under co-digestion conditions were investigated. Batch tests showed that with the addition of graphene dosage of 10 g/L and glucose as a co-substrate with chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration of 2000 mg/L, the average COD concentration decreased from 3995 mg/L on day 1 to 983 mg/L on day 12. The average total phenol (TP) concentration decreased from 431 mg/L on day 1 to 23 mg/L on day 12. The cumulative methane production for 12 days was about 200 mL. Long-term experiments showed the average effluent COD and total phenol reached 1137 mg/L and 200 mg/L, respectively. While methane production stabilized at 500 mL/d. In addition, the coenzyme F 420 concentration increased from 1.075 μmol/g/VSS to 2.3 μmol/g/VSS. The analysis of microbial community structure indicated that the performance of phenols removal and methane production was related to the main microbial flora. The enriched Clostridium, Pseudomonas and species from Firmicutes and Chloroflexi participated in the stages of hydrolysis and acidogenesis. The electrogens Pseudomonas and archaea Methanosaeta were likely the major groups taking part in the direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET). The results obtained in this paper provide a theoretical basis for high-efficiency anaerobic degradation of CGW in practical engineering applications. The effect of enhanced hydrolysis and acidification (EHA) strategy on co-digestion performance of pretreated corn stover (CS) with chicken manure (CM) was investigated. The EHA process was applied to the CS pretreated with KOH and liquid fraction of digestate (LFD), prior to anaerobic digestion. The results showed that the efficiencies of hydrolysis and acidification for the pretreated CS group were significantly higher than the CS group. The maximum cumulative biomethane yield of 240.5 mL·gVS−1 and 242.0 mL·gVS−1 were obtained for the KOH CS group and LFD CS group during the EHA process at 1 day, showing 26.6% and 27.4% improvement over that of the control, respectively. T 90 was shortened by 38.2%–44.1% and 17.7%–38.2%, correspondingly. The synergistic effects and hydrolysis kinetics were also enhanced by the EHA process. The communities of bacteria (Firmicutes , Proteobacteria , and Bacteroidetes) and archaea (Methanosaeta , Methanobacterium , and Methanosarcina) were enriched by the EHA process, and their interactions contributed to the improved digestion performance. Therefore, the EHA process was recommended for efficient biomethane conversion in co-digestion of CS and CM. Anaerobic co-digestion (co-AD) could be a more sustainable waste management solution by sharing the existed anaerobic digestion (AD) facilities and generating more biogas energy. In this study, a series of co-AD of different urban derived organic wastes (sewage sludge-SS, food waste-FW, yard waste-YW) were conducted in a semi-continuous mode, and the corresponding dynamic evolutions of microbial community structure were followed by using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). As for co-AD of two feedstocks, introduction of SS (25%, VS basis) in FW significantly improved the process stability and archaea/total microbe ratio (from 0.4% to 17.1%), which might be due to the regulating effect of abundant trace metals in SS; co-AD of SS (25%, VS basis) with YW improved the methane yield by 2.04 times than AD of YW only together with higher methane contents (57.4 ± 1.3% vs. 50.9 ± 2.2%); in co-AD of FW and YW, synergistic effects in terms of increased methane production (3.4–19.1%) were observed, which was correlated with more robust growth of both bacteria and archaea. As for co-AD of three feedstocks, high methane yields of 314.9 ± 17.1 mL/g VS were achieved with a reliable stability. Methane production from microalgae can be enhanced through anaerobic co-digestion with carbon-rich substrates and thus mitigate the inhibition risk associated with its low C:N ratio. Acclimated microbial communities for microalgae disruption can be used as a source of natural enzymes in bioenergy production. However, co-substrates with a certain microbial diversity such as primary sludge might shift the microbial structure. Substrates were generated in a Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) and combined as follows: Scenedesmus or Chlorella digestion and microalgae co-digestion with primary sludge. The study was performed using two lab-scale Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactors (AnMBR). During three years, different feedstocks scenarios for methane production were evaluated with a special focus on the microbial diversity of the AnMBR. 57% of the population was shared between the different feedstock scenarios, revealing the importance of Anaerolineaceae members besides Smithella and Methanosaeta genera. The addition of primary sludge enhanced the microbial diversity of the system during both Chlorella and Scenedesmus co-digestion and promoted different microbial structures. Aceticlastic methanogen Methanosaeta was dominant in all the feedstock scenarios. A more remarkable role of syntrophic fatty acid degraders (Smithella , Syntrophobacteraceae) was observed during co-digestion when only microalgae were digested. However, no significant changes were observed in the microbial composition during anaerobic microalgae digestion when feeding only Chlorella or Scenedesmus. This is the first work revealing the composition of complex communities for semi-continuous bioenergy production from WRRF streams.
