Mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) is a metabolite of DEHP which is one of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) widely used in daily necessities. Moreover, MEHP has been proven to have stronger biological toxicity comparing to DEHP. In particular, several recent population-based studies have reported that intrauterine exposure to MEHP results in adverse pregnancy outcomes. To explore the mechanisms and metabolic biomarkers of MEHP exposure, we examined the metabolic status of HTR-8/Svneo cell lines exposed to different doses of MEHP (0, 1.25, 5.0, 20 μM). Global and dose-response metabolomics tools were used to identify metabolic perturbations and sensitive markers associated with MEHP. Only 22 metabolic features (accounted for1 %) were significantly changed when exposed to 1.25 μM. Numerous studies have studied the association between daily average temperature (DAT) and daily COVID-19 confirmed cases, which show considerable heterogeneity, even opposite results, among different regions. Such heterogeneity suggests that characterizing the association on a large area scale would ignore the local variation, even obtain false results in some local regions. So, characterizing the spatial distribution of heterogeneous DAT-COVID-19 associations and exploring the causes plays an important role on making temperature-related region-specific intervention measures and early-warning systems.Aiming to characterize the spatial distribution of associations between DAT and COVID-19 confirmed cases in the continental United States, we proposed a novel two-stage strategy. In the first stage, we used the common stratified distributed lag nonlinear model to obtain the rough state-specific associations. In the second stage, conditional autoregression was used to spatially smooth the rough estimations. Furtherly, based on the idea, two modified strategies were used to investigate the time-varying associations and the modification effects derived from the vaccination campaign.Around one-third of states exhibit no significant association between DAT and daily confirmed COVID-19 cases. Most of the remaining states present a low risk at low DAT and a high risk at high DAT, but several states present opposite associations. The average association curve presents a 'S' shape with positive association between -8 - 18 °C and keeping flat out of the range. The impacts of quorum sensing (QS) on nanoparticle (NP)-stressed biological nitrogen removal (BNR) system have seldom been addressed yet. In this study, the contributions of endogenous N-acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL)-based QS regulation to the BNR system's adaptation to the zinc oxide (ZnO) NP stress and its recovery potential were systematically investigated. Although 1 mg/L ZnO NPs exerted little impact on the BNR system, chronic exposure to 10 mg/L ones depressed the system's BNR performance which irreversibly impaired the nitrification process even when the system entered the recovery period with no NP added anymore. Biodegradation of soil contaminants may be promoted near plant roots due to the “rhizosphere effect” which may enhance microbial growth and activity. However, the effects of different plant cultivars within a single species on degradation remains unclear. Here, we evaluated the removal of soil total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) by ten different cultivars of tall fescue grass (Festuca arundinacea L.) and their associated rhizosphere microbiomes. TPH removal efficiency across the ten different cultivars was not significantly correlated with plant biomass. Rhizing Star and Greenbrooks cultivars showed the maximum (76.6%) and minimum (62.2%) TPH removal efficiencies, respectively, after 120 days. Significant differences were observed between these two cultivars in the composition of rhizosphere bacterial and fungal communities, especially during the early stages (day 30) of remediation but the differences decreased later (day 90). Putative petroleum-degrading bacterial and fungal guilds were enriched in the presence of tall fescue. Moreover, the complexity of microbial networks declined in treatments with higher TPH removal efficiency. The relative abundances of saprotrophic fungi and putative genes alkB and C12O in bacetria involved in petroleum degradation increased, especially in the presence of Rhizing Star cultivar, and this was consistent with the TPH removal efficiency results. These results indicate the potential of tall fescue grass cultivars and their associated rhizosphere microbiomes to phytoremediate petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soils.

Rhizosphere is a crucial site for the proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in agricultural soil. Pesticide contamination is ubiquitous in soil, such as chlorpyrifos as one of the most commonly used pesticides. However, limited knowledge is reported about ARGs profiles changes and the driving mechanism of ARGs prevalence in rhizosphere soil after adding pesticide. In this study, irrespective of chlorpyrifos presence, the abundances of ARGs (tetM, tetO, tetQ, tetW, tetX, sul1 and sul2) and intI1 in rhizosphere soil of wheat were obviously higher than those in bulk soil. 20.0 mg·kg−1 chlorpyrifos significantly increased the abundance of total ARGs and intI1 in bulk soil, respectively, at day 50 and 100, but not in rhizosphere soil. Rhizosphere influence on ARGs was far greater than chlorpyrifos. ARGs and intI1 abundances were higher at day 50 than ones at day 100. C/N ratio and NO3−-N content, which were affected by rhizosphere and cultivation time, significantly explained the increased ARGs. Compared to bulk soil, rhizosphere shifted host bacteria of tetracycline resistance genes (TRGs), intI1 at genus level, and host bacteria of sul1, sul2 at phylum level. Rhizosphere simplified the linkage of ARGs, host bacteria and metabolites. Bacterial communities played important roles in the variation of ARGs and intI1, and the difference in the distribution of potential hosts between bulk and rhizosphere soil was related to metabolites abundance and composition. These results provide valuable information for understanding the linkage of ARGs, associated bacteria communities and metabolites in the wheat rhizosphere soil.

Bacteria are critical ecosystem drivers in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. However, our understanding of the mechanisms generating and maintaining biodiversity on large spatial scales remains limited, especially mechanisms involving rare taxa in soil ecosystems. In the present study we took paddy soils in China as model ecosystems and studied the ecological diversity and assembly mechanisms of both the rare and abundant bacterial subcommunities. We collected 339 paddy soil samples from 113 sites across 19 Chinese provinces that span distances of up to 3869 km. The bacterial community was characterized by high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. The α-diversity of rare and abundant subcommunities showed opposite quadratic correlations with the key environmental factor soil pH. Rare taxa exhibited a stronger distance-decay relationship than the abundant subcommunity. Moreover, deterministic selection processes dominated in the assembly of the abundant subcommunity while stochastic processes dominated in that of the rare subcommunity based on both variation partitioning analysis and the phylogenetic null model. Soil pH was also the main deterministic factor driving the geographical distributions of both the rare and abundant subcommunity. Besides, mean annul temperature and soil texture were also found to be important factors affecting the biogeography and diversity patterns of abundant and rare subcommunities. These results indicate that the mechanisms generating and maintaining the diversity of the abundant and rare subcommunities were totally different in paddy soils, suggesting that these two subcommunities may respond differently to future environmental change.

Although the adverse effects of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) on biological nitrogen removal (BNR) processes have widely been reported, the impacts of ZnO NPs on the whole nitrogen transformation processes, especially the production of nitrous oxide (N2O), a typical greenhouse gas in a BNR system have rarely been systematically studied yet. In this study, the performances of both the nitrification and denitrification processes were investigated and the N2O emission was simultaneously monitored in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) when exposed to 1, 25 or 50 mg/L ZnO NPs for one cycle. The dose-dependent ZnO NP depression effects were generally observed on denitrification processes, total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency and N2O emissions but not nitrification process. Meanwhile, the N2O emission was positively correlated with NO2−-N accumulation in the oxic stage. Further investigation showed that the expressions of nitrate (NO3−) reduction associated narG gene were down-regulated with the increase of NP stress, and the transcript ratios of NO2−/NO reduction gene to N2O reduction one (nirK/nosZ and norB/nosZ) decreased. The released Zn2+ from ZnO NPs took an important role in the inhibition of denitrification processes. ZnO NPs addition also induced the dose-dependent variations in the superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities, which probably contributed to the suppression of the excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) generations to mitigate nanotoxicity. Uptake of nanoparticles and antibiotics by plants is root exudates-dependent, however, the underlying influence processes and mechanisms from different root exudates are rarely investigated. A hydroponic experiment was conducted to investigate the accumulation of Fe2O3 nanoparticle (NP) and oxytetracycline (OTC) in rice seedlings, in the absence or presence of citric acid or glycine, acting as components of root exudates. Irrespective of individual or combined exposure of Fe2O3 NP and OTC, citric acid and glycine both reduced surface-Fe, surface-OTC, root-OTC, shoot-OTC accumulations with dose-effect relationship. Two exudates increased |ζ| values of NP, which weakened the interactive attraction between NP and root surface and then decreased surface-Fe accumulation. Citric acid and glycine binding with OTC in solution decreased surface-OTC accumulation, and further decreased root-OTC and shoot-OTC accumulations. Combined exposure of two pollutants alleviated the reduction effect of citric acid and glycine on surface-Fe/surface-OTC/root-OTC accumulations due to their high accumulations in combined exposure compared to individual exposure. Although citric acid and glycine promoted TFroot-shoot and TFsurface-root of two pollutants, respectively, they always decreased total rice-Fe and rice-OTC accumulations. Therefore, the presence of root exudates decreased the bioaccumulation of Fe2O3 NP and OTC in rice upon their individual and combined exposure through changing their environmental behaviors in rhizosphere.
