Abstract Our study illustrated the ecological conditions in the rivers of Lake Taihu Basin (LTB) using an index of biotic integrity based on phytoplankton (P-IBI), and its performance was compared with the previously developed water quality index (WQI). Samples were collected seasonally at 96 sites covering the major rivers from September 2014 to January 2016. Three critical ecological indices, i.e., phytoplankton density, chlorophyll a (chl a), and Menhinick, were selected from a pool of 22 candidate indices mainly according to the correlations among indices and environmental parameters. The results indicated that the ecological status of LTB based on P-IBI was significantly different at spatial (especially between Tiaoxi and the other 5 river systems) and seasonal scales. Furthermore, the proposed P-IBI effectively identified the major environmental parameters (total nitrogen, ammonium, total phosphorus, and permanganate index) associated with each level (bad, low, and moderate). Moreover, the P-IBI was closely and positively correlated with the WQI at the spatial scale regardless of season. However, the ecological conditions were significantly worse according to the P-IBI at both the spatial (P < 0.001) and seasonal scales (P values of 0.018 in winter and < 0.001 in other seasons, respectively), and the seasonal distribution pattern differed between the two methods. Our study suggests that the P-IBI provides an essential supplement for the assessment of ecological conditions of rivers and that the selected critical indices (phytoplankton density, chl a , and Menhinick) are suitable for river ecosystems. Additionally, compared with WQI, the water quality condition was generally worse when using P-IBI, and this phenomenon requires further attention during water quality assessments, as well as different seasonal distribution patterns. LMB is a widely utilized material for the management of sediment-derived phosphorus (P) in eutrophic lakes. However, the properties of organic P at the sediment-water interface and the effect of LMB on organic P fractions in sediments are still unclear. The batch studies reported here indicate that LMB has good adsorption properties toward organic P (Glucose-6-phosphate), and the tentative adsorption mechanism relies on chemisorption. Laboratory microcosmic experiments were conducted to study the immobilization effect of LMB on the organic P in water and sediments. The results indicated that the concentration of total P, labile P and organic P in overlying water and pore water could be effectively reduced by LMB capping of sediments. After treatment, the optimal immobilization effects appeared on the 7th day and until the 60th day. However, the fractions of organic P change during the capping time. Active organic P eluted with NaHCO 3 transforms into moderately labile or non-labile P through the physical and chemical processes, as well as microbial action. Microbial community analysis showed that the addition of LMB had inhibitory effect on the phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria, which also affected the transformation between various forms of organic P. This study provided new insights of LMB in situ capping of organic P and the mechanisms of the migration and cycling of internal organic P, which is beneficial for the management of eutrophic lakes. Reuse of pulp-and-paper industry wastewater as reclaimed water is an effective way to mitigate water resource shortage. In this study, the feasibility and safety of papermaking wastewater for the use as ecological water supplement after the treatment by fluidized-bed Fenton (FBF) coupled with constructed wetland (CW), were investigated from laboratory-scale to large-scale field. The optimum pH, H 2 O 2 , H 2 O 2 /Fe2+ ratio and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of FBF were 3.5, 0.93 mL/L, 4 and 60 min, respectively, based on reduction of both total organic carbon (TOC) and genotoxicity. Furthermore, the safety of effluent was evaluated using SOS/umu assay and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in zebrafish. Results showed FBF followed by CW improved the conventional water quality indicators and reduced the toxicity. Average removal rates of chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 -N), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and colority were 87.3%, 93.59%, 51.73%, 84.75% and 95.86%, respectively. The equivalent concentration of 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4-NQO-EQ) decreased from 30.6 ± 1.6 μg/L in influent to 12.4 ± 1.0 μg/L after treated by FBF, then decreased to 5.9 ± 0.4 μg/L after treated by CW and to 3.2 ± 0.3 μg/L after 12-km downstream self-purification. The chronic survival rates of 21-d zebrafish significantly increased from 0.0% in influent to 58.8 ± 4.0% in effluent of CW and gradually increased to 68.8 ± 2.6% after 12-km downstream self-purification. Similarly, 8-OHdG level in zebrafish decreased from 120.0 ± 19.3 ng/L in effluent of ecological oxidation pond to 94.0 ± 7.5 ng/L in effluent of CW and gradually decreased to 42.0 ± 3.0 ng/L after 12-km downstream self-purification. Colloidal particles in lake waters interact inevitably with cyanobacterial extracellular polymeric substance (EPS), which will change their behavior and fate. Quantitative prediction of the effects of cyanobacterial EPS on colloidal behavior is difficult due to its variability and heterogeneity. To explore the effects of molecular weight (MW) fractions and chemical properties of cyanobacterial EPS on aggregation kinetics of colloidal particles, time-series cyanobacterial samples were collected in Lake Taihu, China, from April to November (during blooming and maintenance period), with the bulk EPS matrix fractionating into low MW (LMW–, <1 nm) and high MW (HMW–, 1 nm–0.45 μm) fractions. HMW–EPS was generally characterized with higher absorbance and predominant distribution of protein-like substances, while LMW–EPS contained mainly the humic- and fulvic-like substances. The absorbance, molecular size, and humification degree for each MW fraction consistently increased from April to November, showing obvious temporal variations from blooming period to maintenance period. As for the MW-dependent aggregation behaviors, the HMW–EPS provided better stability against aggregation than the LMW–EPS, and the bulk EPS matrix that consisted of HMW– and LMW–fractions exhibited the effects intermediate between that of each fraction alone. Regardless of MW fractions, the effects of EPS-induced stability enhancement were more evident in maintenance period than in blooming period. Further analysis showed that the colloidal stability was correlated positively with SUVA 254 (R 2 = 0.82–0.93) but negatively with Slope 275–295 (R 2 = 0.53–0.91) of UV–Vis absorption spectra, indicating that aromaticity and MWs were two critical parameters controlling colloidal aggregation. Therefore, cyanobacterial EPS can exhibit variable effects on colloidal stability, and characterization of MW distribution is strongly required in predicating the behavior and fate of colloidal particles in water environments. Cyanobacterial extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) in aquatic environments are easily adsorbed onto colloidal particles, whereas the adsorption behavior as affected by molecular weight (MW) properties remained unknown till now. Herein, the bulk cyanobacterial EPS matrix (<0.45 μm) was fractionated into high MW (HMW-, 1 kDa~0.45 μm) and low MW (LMW-, <1 kDa) fractions, with MW-dependent adsorption heterogeneities onto TiO 2 colloids exploring through batch experiment, UV–Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, and two dimensional Fourier transform infrared correlation spectroscopy (2D–FTIR–COS). About two-thirds of total organic matters within bulk EPS matrix were distributed in the HMW fraction, leaving one-third in the LMW fraction. Compared to LMW–EPS, the HMW counterpart exhibited higher aromaticity and richness of autochthonous protein-like substances, showing evident MW-dependent differences in abundance and composition. The adsorption capacity based on the measurement of total abundance, UV–Vis and fluorescent spectra all decreased in sequence of HMW- > Bulk > LMW-EPS, demonstrating obvious MW-dependent adsorption heterogeneities. During adsorption, the values of SUVA 254 in residual supernatants exhibited an initial decrease followed by gradual increase for all samples, suggesting that the preferentially adsorbed aromatic substances can be subsequently replaced by the non-aromatic moieties. 2D–FTIR–COS further revealed that the carboxylic groups of proteins were preferentially adsorbed onto colloidal surface, followed by the C C functional groups and then the C H groups of polysaccharides, which accounted for the variations of SUVA 254 values in the supernatants. This study demonstrated that the adsorption behavior of EPS matrix was highly MW-dependent, and detailed characterization on size fractionation is thus needed in future studies. In this study, the generalized additive model (GAM) was used to analyze seasonal monitoring data from Lake Taihu, collected from 2010 to 2014, with the aim to explore the correlation between chlorophyll a (Chla) and other water quality parameters. The selected optimal multivariable GAM could effectively explain the concentration variation of Chla occurring during each season, and the interpretation degree followed the order: summer > autumn > spring > winter. The fitting results indicated that the concentration variation of Chla could reflect that of biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand in all seasons. In addition, the total phosphorus showed strong ability to explain the concentration change of Chla in spring and summer, as the growth of algae would be affected when the concentration of phosphorus shifted high or low. Nitrogen showed strong ability to explain the variations in Chla concentration in autumn. The conclusions of the optimal multivariable GAM could provide decision basis for the eutrophication control. In other words, the prevention of eutrophication outbreaks could be carried out via the targeted control of key water pollutants. According to these results, the concentration of Chla was higher in northern and western lake during summer and autumn, the management should focus on nutrient input of adjacent rivers. Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are extensively used as flame retardants and plasticizers in China; however, their potential carcinogenicity causes great concern. To date, their environmental distribution in water samples from the lower Yangtze River Basin still remains uncharacterized. This study systematically investigated the occurrence and spatial distribution of 13 OPEs, as well as their associated potential risks, in water samples from the lower Yangtze River and its 88 major inflowing rivers. The total OPE (ΣOPEs) concentrations ranged from 55.6 to 5071 ng/L, with a median of 144 ng/L. Among them, halogenated OPEs were the dominant group with an average of 61.6%, and tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (12.6–450 ng/L, median: 53.38 ng/L) and tris(2-choroethyl) phosphate (11.0–1202 ng/L, median: 36.4 ng/L) were the most abundant OPEs. Significantly different concentrations were found with spatial variations (p < 0.01), and were higher in southern cities than in northern cities of the lower Yangtze River Basin. Principal component analysis with multiple linear regression and Spearman correlations showed that the main sources were likely emission of vehicular and marine traffic. Ecological risk analysis showed that the risk quotient (RQ) values of samples remained below 1, but the percentage of 0.1 < RQ ≤ 1 was 26.9%, indicating a medium risk of OPEs in water samples. Moreover, ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate predominantly contributed to the ecological risk, accounting for >89.2% of the total ecological risk of ΣOPEs. However, the total non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of ΣOPEs were negligible at the detected concentrations, even in a high exposure scenario. The risks from major inflowing rivers of the lower Yangtze River were almost one order of magnitude higher than those of the mainstream lower Yangtze River. A comprehensive characterisation of four phenolic compounds in surface water and various emission sources was conducted simultaneously in a typical industrial city upstream of the Taihu Lake watershed. The overall concentrations of the target compounds ranged from 0.15 to 2.75 μg/L in the surface water and from 0.43 to 377 μg/L in the emission sources. Relatively high concentration levels were observed in August, during which the rainy season typically occurred in the study area, indicating seasonal emission sources. The spatial distribution revealed severe phenolic-compound contamination in the northeast part of the study area. According to the relationships between the surface water and emission sources, combined-sewer overflow and surface runoff from agricultural activities were identified as seasonal emission sources that were responsible for the increased concentration levels in wet seasons. Indirect discharge of industrial wastewater was proposed as a persistent emission source responsible for the severe contamination level in the northeast region over the entire sampling period, accounting for 16.5% of the phenolic-compound load in a demonstration river section. The findings of this study are useful for identifying the sources of phenolic compounds and controlling the contamination from the main sources in a typical industrial city.
