While interest in arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal effects on soil phosphorus (P) have recently increased, field experiments on this topic are lacking. While microcosm studies provided valuable insights, the lack of field studies represents a knowledge gap. Here, we present a field study in which we grew a mycorrhiza-defective tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) genotype (named rmc) and its mycorrhizal wild-type progenitor (named 76R) with and without additional fertiliser, using a drip-irrigation system to examine the impacts of the AM symbiosis on soil P availability and plant growth and nutrition. AM effects on fruit biomass and nutrients, soil nutrient availability, soil moisture and the soil bacterial community were examined. At the time of harvest, the AM tomato plants without fertiliser had the same early season fruit biomass and fruit nutrient concentrations as plants that received fertiliser. The presence of roots reduced the concentration of available soil P, ammonium and soil moisture in the top 10 cm soil layer. Arbuscular mycorrhizas did not significantly affect soil P availability, soil moisture, or 16S bacterial community composition. These findings suggest an indirect role for AM fungi in tomato production but not necessarily a direct role in determining soil physicochemical traits, during the one season that this experiment was conducted. 13 C CP-MAS nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopies were compared for evaluating their potential to characterise the influence of land use change on organic carbon (OC) chemistry of particulate organic matter (POM) and mineral associated OM (MOM) fractions of different soil types. Surface soil samples of Ferralsol, Luvisol, Vertisol and Solonetz were collected from native and crop lands and isolated into different density fractions. NMR and DRIFT showed distinct OC composition for all the soil fractions of two land uses. In NMR spectra, greater proportion of carbohydrate and aromatic C was observed in POM, while MOM fractions were rich in carbohydrate, amino groups and aliphatic C. DRIFT spectra showed greater carboxylic, aromatic C and amide N in MOM than corresponding POM. NMR spectroscopy detected charred aromatic C in both fractions, which was not feasible with DRIFT. The overall effect of land use in both techniques appeared similar on the composition of POM- OC, i.e., increased aromaticity and decreased alkyl C:O-alkyl C ratio. However, differences of land use impact were observed in MOM-OC, e.g., overall decreased aromaticity and increased alkyl C:O-alkyl C for all soils in NMR, and in DRIFT, it varied with soil type (aromaticity: Ferralsol, Vertisol > Luvisol, Solonetz). However, these trends were inconsistent and indistinct among fractions of four soils. Discrepancy in NMR and DRIFT results was ascribed to the sensitivity limitations of the two techniques in characterising soil OM in mineral rich fractions, and sample pre-treatment effect in NMR. We conclude that combination of NMR and DRIFT spectroscopy, preferably supplemented by other techniques e.g., mass spectroscopy and XPS, would improve the proficiency in elucidating small changes in soil OM composition with land use conversion., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest None., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. While the impact of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on phosphorus (P) uptake is well understood, the mechanism(s) of how these fungi affect P leaching from soil is still unclear. Here we present results of a study in which we grew a mycorrhiza-defective tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) genotype (named rmc) and its mycorrhizal wild-type progenitor (named 76R) in microcosms containing non-sterile soil, to examine the influence of roots and AMF on P leaching. More P was leached from the planted microcosms as compared to the plant-free controls. Further, although there was more plant biomass and greater P uptake in the mycorrhizal plant treatments, these treatments were associated with the most leaching of total P, reactive P, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). There was a strong correlation between the total P and DOC leached, suggesting that root and fungal exudates may have affected P leaching. In pine forest litters, decomposition rate is directly affected by the pathway the needle followed to the ground, whether that was via programmed apoptosis and abscission or via stress induced loss through branch damage or tree death. Stress induced losses may occur due to fire damage, which leads to a post-fire litter layer composed of non-senescent debris that fell during or after the event. This study investigates decomposition and nitrogen cycling in soils amended with two litters from Pinus radiata plantations that had different recent fire histories. Litters were incubated in the presence or absence of field collected char for up to 94 days. These soil treatments were analysed for microbial activity (soil respiration) and N pools (microbial, mineral, and potentially mineralisable). Soil and litter treatments were additionally incubated in the presence of ammonium nitrate solution to determine N absorption potential of the litters. Respiration was greatest in soils that received fire affected (FA) litter regardless of the presence or absence of char. Nitrogen pools were largely similar between the control (no litter) treatment and not fire affected (NFA) litter treatments. Measured N pools were exceedingly low (92% of samples <2 μg-N g soil -1 where detected) or not detectable (37% of samples below detection limits) in all FA litter treatments at most times. Char appeared inert throughout and had no effects on microbial activity or nitrogen cycling. This study indicates that fire affected pine litter collected four months post fire has strong N absorption properties with or without the presence of char. This study compared the degradation of indigenous bisphenol A (BPA) and triclosan (TCS) in a biosolids-amended soil, to the degradation of spiked labelled surrogates of the same compounds (BPA-d16 and TCS-(13)C12). The aim was to determine if spiking experiments accurately predict the degradation of compounds in biosolids-amended soils using two different types of biosolids, a centrifuge dried biosolids (CDB) and a lagoon dried biosolids (LDB). The rate of degradation of the compounds was examined and the results indicated that there were considerable differences between the indigenous and spiked compounds. These differences were more marked for BPA, for which the indigenous compound was detectable throughout the study, whereas the spiked compound decreased to below the detection limit prior to the study completion. The rate of degradation for the indigenous BPA was approximately 5-times slower than that of the spiked BPA-d16. The indigenous and spiked TCS were both detectable throughout the study, however, the shape of the degradation curves varied considerably, particularly in the CDB treatment. Personal care products (PCPs) and endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) are groups of organic contaminants that have been detected in biosolids around the world. There is a shortage of data on these types on compounds in Australian biosolids, making it difficult to gain an understanding of their potential risks in the environment following land application. In this study, 14 biosolids samples were collected from 13 Australian wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to determine concentrations of eight compounds that are PCPs and/or EDCs: 4-t-octylphenol (4tOP), 4-nonylphenol (4NP), triclosan (TCS), bisphenol A (BPA), estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2), estriol (E3) and 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2). Concentration data were evaluated to determine if there were any differences between samples that had undergone anaerobic or aerobic treatment. The concentration data were also compared to other Australian and international data. Only 4tOP, 4NP, TCS, and BPA were detected in all samples and E1 was detected in four of the 14 samples. Their concentrations ranged from 0.05 to 3.08 mg/kg, 0.35 to 513 mg/kg, <0.01 to 11.2 mg/kg, <0.01 to 1.47 mg/kg and <45 to 370 μg/kg, respectively. The samples that were obtained from WWTPs that used predominantly anaerobic treatment showed significantly higher concentrations of the compounds than those obtained from WWTPs that used aerobic treatment. Overall, 4NP, TCS and BPA concentrations in Australian biosolids were lower than global averages (by 42%, 12% and 62%, respectively) and 4tOP concentrations were higher (by 25%), however, of these differences only that for BPA was statistically significant. The effect of biosolids amendment on cadmium sorption coefficient (K(d)) was determined for soils in a biosolids field trial. The sorptive properties of biosolids are thought to have a significant controlling effect upon the availability/uptake and mobility of potentially toxic metals. K(d) values for the three biosolids were 10-30 times greater than those for unamended soil. Elevated K(d) values were still apparent 1 and 2 years after biosolids amendment (100 t ha(-1)) for two of the three biosolids. Chemical extractants (sodium hypochlorite and hydrofluoric acid, respectively) were used in an attempt to determine K(d) values of isolated inorganic and organic fractions. For both biosolids amended soils and unamended controls, Cd sorption appeared to be dominated by the inorganic fraction, potentially indicating the overriding importance of this fraction in controlling metal mobility. However, for the biosolids themselves, the sum of inorganic and organic fraction contributions to K(d) accounted for less than half the K(d) of the whole biosolids. This discrepancy was attributed to the loss of highly sorptive water soluble species in both chemical extractions.
