Abstract: Irrigation plays an increasing important role in agriculture of China. The assessment of water resources utilization during agricultural production process will contribute to improving agricultural water management practices for the irrigation districts. The water footprint provides a new approach to assessing the agricultural water utilization. The present paper put forward a modified calculation method to quantify the water footprint of crop. On this basis, this paper calculated the water footprint of major crop in Hetao irrigation district, China. Then, it evaluated the influencing factors that caused the variability of crop water footprint during the study period. Results showed that: 1) the annual average water footprint of integrated-crop production in Hetao irrigation district was 3.91m3 kg−1 (90.91% blue water and 9.09% green water). The crop production in the Hetao irrigation district mainly relies on blue water; 2) under the integrated influences of interannual climate variability and variation of agricultural inputs, the water footprint of integrated-crop production displayed a decreasing trend; 3) the contribution rate of the climatic factors to the variation of water footprint was only −6.90%, while the total contribution rate of the agricultural inputs factors was −84.31%. The results suggest that the water footprint of crop mainly depends on agricultural management rather than the regional climate and its variation. The results indicated that the water footprint of a crop could be controlled at a reasonable level by better management of all agricultural inputs and the improvement of water use efficiency in agriculture. Abstract The blue water footprint (WF) measures the consumption of runoff in a river basin. In order to ensure sustainable water consumption, setting a monthly blue WF cap, that is an upper-limit to the blue WF in a river basin each month, can be a suitable policy instrument. The blue WF cap in a river basin depends on the precipitation that becomes runoff and the need to maintain a minimum flow for sustaining ecosystems and livelihoods. Reservoirs along the river generally smooth runoff variability and thus raise the WF cap and reduce blue water scarcity during the dry season. Previous water scarcity studies, considering the ratio of actual blue WF to the blue WF cap under natural background conditions, have not studied this effect of reservoir storages. Here we assess how water reservoirs influence blue WF caps over time and how they affect the variability of blue water scarcity in a river basin. We take the Yellow River Basin over the period January 2002–July 2006 as case study and consider data on observed storage changes in five large reservoirs along the main stream. Results indicate that reservoirs redistribute the blue WF cap and blue water scarcity levels over time. Monthly blue WF caps were generally lowered by reservoir storage during the flood season (July–October) and raised by reservoir releases over the period of highest crop demand (March–June). However, with water storage exceeding 20% of natural runoff in most rainy months, reservoirs contribute to "scarcity in the wet months", which is to be understood as a situation in which environmental flow requirements related to the occurrence of natural peak flows are no longer met. Irrigation plays a major role in Chinese agricultural production, as China is experiencing water and food scarcity. Assessing water use (WU) and water productivity (WP) will contribute to regional water management and grain production improvement. This paper quantifies the water use and productivity in grain production for 31 Chinese provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities (PAMs) by distinguishing between irrigated and rain-fed farmland. An indicator of marginal productivity of blue water (MWP b ) is established and calculated to evaluate irrigation profits. National water use (WU t ) for grain cultivation from 1998 to 2010 was approximately 689.04 Gm 3 (42.26% blue water and 57.74% green water). The productive water proportions for irrigated and total croplands were 65.57% and 76.85%, respectively. Water use compositions from both blue–green and productive–unproductive perspectives changed slightly over time. The water use productivity (WPU) and water consumption productivity (WPC) for integrated grain products of China during the study period were 0.747 and 0.972 kg/m 3 , respectively. The spatial distribution patterns of irrigated WPs (WPU I, WPC I ) were consistent with those for total cropland. China has achieved sufficient food supply without increasing water use. The national MWP b was estimated to be 0.673 kg/m 3 , revealing a higher increase in crop yield on irrigated land compared to rain-fed land. The northeast provinces urgently need to improve irrigation efficiency, and the North China Plain PAMs should promote rain-fed crop yield to increase grain production and control water use in the future. The integration of water footprints and virtual water flows allows the mapping of the links between production, trade, and consumption and could potentially help to alleviate water scarcity and improve water management. We evaluated the water footprints and virtual water flows of crop production, consumption, and trade and their influencing factors in the Hetao irrigation district in China for 1960–2010. The water footprint of crop production and the export of virtual water fluctuated but tended to increase during this period and were influenced mainly by agricultural factors such as crop yield, irrigation efficiency, and area sown. The water footprint of crop consumption and the import of virtual water increased during 1960–1979 and decreased during 1980–2010 and were influenced by socio-economic factors such as total population, the retail-price index, and the proportion of the population in urban areas. Most of the water footprint of production was exported to other areas, which added to the pressure on local water systems. The import of virtual water led to a saving of water for the Hetao irrigation district, while its share of the water footprint of consumption has decreased significantly since 1977. An increase in irrigation efficiency can alleviate water scarcity, and its application should be coupled with measures that constrain the continued expansion of agriculture. Full-cost pricing of irrigation water was an effective policy tool for its management. Re-shaping regional water-production and water-trade nexuses by changing crop structures could provide alternative opportunities for addressing the problems of local water scarcity, but the trade-offs involved should first be assessed. The number of apple (Malus pumila Mill.) orchards has increased substantially in hilly regions of the Loess Plateau of China, as a significant element of the large-scale 'Grain for Green' ecological rehabilitation program that aims to conserve soil and water while improving the regions economic prospects. However, the long-term effects of the orchard expansion and the adaptive responses of apple trees to drought are not known. Thus, using a space-for-time substitution approach, we investigated plant-available water and fine-root distribution in the 0–8 m soil profile in apple orchards of various ages in a dry year (2015, 392 mm rainfall) and the following year with normal precipitation (2016, 500 mm rainfall). We found that plant-available water gradually decreased with stand age in the dry year, but increased in the normal year, especially in the 0–2 m soil layer. Fine root (<2 mm diameter) distribution and biomass increased with stand age and decreased with increasing soil depth in all treatment plots, predominantly in the 0–2 m layer. In all treatment plots, most of the soil layers in the deep soil (>2 m) had soil moisture storage deficit. In the dry year (2015), the apple trees increased both the average depth (D 50 and D 95 values) and biomass of their fine-root systems in response to water stress, relative to the normal year (2016). Thus, the apple trees extracted water primarily from the shallow (<2 m) layers in the normal year, but from deeper soil layers in the dry year, to sustain growth. The results of this study will help to guide land and agricultural water management in rainfed apple orchards in hilly regions of the Loess Plateau and similar dryland regions. Abstract Soil water and carbon stocks have always been research hotspots. However, the interaction between soil water and carbon in deep soil (>1 m below surface) remains poorly understood. The present study used the chronosequence approach to investigate water extraction and carbon input by roots to a depth of 25.2 m in 8-, 11-, 15-, 18-, and 22-year-old afforested apple (Malus pumila Mill.) orchard stands in a sub-humid region of the Chinese Loess Plateau. Three long-term cultivated farmlands were used as a benchmark of soil water and carbon status before land use change. Measurements showed that the apple trees accessed deep soil water reserves by growing deep roots, with the resulting desiccated soil possibly stimulating apple trees to extend their roots into deeper, moister soil. Accordingly, soil water content in the root zone decreased progressively with increasing stand age. For example, the roots of apple trees in the 22-year-old stand extended to 23.2 m below the soil surface and extracted 1530 ± 43 mm deep soil water. Consequently, carbon input from root biomass correlated well with the water storage loss in deep soil (R2 = 0.88). Deep roots accounted for 49 ± 22% of the total root biomass and contributed 0.44 ± 0.15 Mg C ha−1 yr−1 to the deep soil. However, the roots of apple trees did not significantly change the soil organic carbon content in the root zone possibly because there was limited root biomass per unit soil depth and because soil water content in the root zone gradually decreased. These findings demonstrate the importance of deep soil in regulating water and carbon cycles, advancing our understanding of interactions among water, roots, and carbon in this zone. Loess Plateau has great uncertainty on drought occurrence due to climate change. This paper analyzes the evolution of precipitation, potential evapotranspiration and standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) based on the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) data and regional downscaling model (RegCM4.0). Results indicate that, under RCP2.6 Scenario, the precipitation will increase significantly (5% confidence level) at the rate of 16.40 mm/10 a. However, the potential evapotranspiration is showing non-significant decreasing trend at the rate of 2.16 mm/10 a. Moreover, the SPEI will decrease in the south and northernmost area and increase in the central northern area of Loess Plateau. Under RCP8.5 Scenario, the precipitation will increase significantly (5% confidence level) at the rate of 19.12 mm/10 a. The potential evapotranspiration will non-significantly decrease at the rate of 2.16 mm/10 a and the SPEI is showing increasing trend almost in the whole Loess Plateau. Generally, Loess Plateau is becoming wetter in the central part under RCP2.6 Scenario and the wet area will be enlarged to almost the whole plateau under RCP8.5 Scenario. Vegetative filter strips (VFSs) are a labor-saving and cost-effective agricultural best management practice to trap water runoff and sediment from the source areas. They also provide forage and/or fuel and are therefore potentially profitable for land owners. VFSs are however a dynamic system: the runoff delivery ratio (RDR) and sediment delivery ratio (SDR) vary with growth stage and vegetation types. The impacts of vegetation characteristics as well as soil physical properties modified by vegetation growth, on the RDR and SDR of VFS were evaluated by a flume experiment. Two plant species (cocksfoot ( Dactylis glomerata L.) and white clover ( Trifolium repens L.)) were tested at three stages in the growing season of 2016 (May, July, and August). The measured RDR and SDR were compared with the simulated results from Vegetative Filter Strip Modeling System (VFSMOD). In the early stages of the growing season, the cocksfoot formed a dense network of stems with high strip Manning's roughness faster than white clover. The runoff and sediment trapping effects of the white clover VFS were greater than that of cocksfoot VFS in all the three stages (lower RDR and SDR). This is likely attributed to strongly tillering, creeping stem posture and high infiltration capacity of the white clover VFS. VFSMOD simulated the RDR and SDR reliably except under low vegetation coverage conditions (white clover in May). The results suggested that (1) both soil physical properties and vegetation characteristics should be considered for the species-specific, temporally variable performance of VFS; and (2) when using VFSMOD inform the VFS design, modelers should take the dynamics of vegetation, mainly through vertical saturated hydraulic conductivity, stem spacing and strip Manning's roughness into account, and select parameters that reflect the actual field conditions. Jointly influenced by the natural factors and the artificial protection measures, the ecological environment of Loess Plateau has been significantly improved in recent years, but which has already brought about some water-related problems. To maintain the balance between precipitation and water consumption is an important foundation for sustainable development of the ecology remediation. This study used Budyko Framework to simulate the actual water consumption of 161 sub-basins from 1990 to 2014. Based on the simulation results, the research also analyzed the evolution characteristics of water balance in Loess Plateau from 1990 to 2014. Results show that, with the increase of vegetation coverage, the regional precipitation and actual evapotranspiration were both showing a significant increasing trend, and the increasing rate of precipitation was 1.91 mm/a on average, which was greater than the increasing rate of actual evapotranspiration of 1.34 mm/a. To further demonstrate the water balance regime in Loess Plateau, the evapotranspiration coefficient (ECC) was used to quantitatively indicate the ratio of the vegetation water consumption and the total precipitation. The average values of ECC were 0.868, 0.863, 0.851 and 0.837 respectively in four sub-periods of 1990–1999, 2000–2004, 2005–2009 and 2010–2014. The above analyses indicate that with the vegetation recovery and ecological restoration, the percentage of evapotranspiration in the total precipitation is keeping decreasing and in turn the percentage of water yield in the total precipitation is keeping increasing. Scarcity of water resources is one of the major challenges in the world, particularly for the main water consumer, agriculture. Virtual water flow (VWF) promotes water redistribution geographically and provides a new solution for resolving regional water shortage and improving water use efficiency in the world. Virtual water transfer among regions will have a significant influence on the water systems in both grain export and import regions. In order to assess the impacts of VWF related grain transfer on regional water resources conditions, the study takes mainland China as study area for a comprehensive evaluation of virtual water flow on regional water resources stress. Results show that Northeast China and Huang-Huai-Hai region are the major grain production regions as well as the major virtual water export regions. National water savings related to grain VWF was about 58 Gm 3 , with 48 Gm 3 blue water and 10 Gm 3 green water. VWF changes the original water distribution and has a significant effect on water resources in both virtual water import and export regions. Grain VWF significantly increased water stress in grain export regions and alleviated water stress in grain import regions. Water stress index (WSI) of Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia has been increased by 138% and 129% due to grain export. Stress from water shortages is generally severe in export regions, and issues with the sustainability of grain production and VWF pattern are worthy of further exploration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

China's food security is facing serious threats because the virtual water triggered by grain trade flows from the water-scarce north region to the water-rich south region in recent years. Thus, quantitatively evaluating grain virtual water flow is increasingly important. We established a multi-objective linear optimization model based on analyzing drivers of grain trade by the entropy method, and the two drivers of transport cost and grain consumption structure between provinces were analyzed. The results show that the virtual water flow of inter-provincial grain trade of China was 98.38 Gm3 in 2015, accounting for 15% of the total water consumption of grain production. The impact weights of grain transportation cost and difference of grain consumption structure between provinces on virtual water flow were 0.665 and 0.335, respectively. Although the production and consumption of grain in northern region were almost the same, the virtual water imbedded in grain trade still flowed from the north to the south under the influence of grain imports from abroad and grain consumption structure. Compared to previous methods, the model added the principle of the entropy method into linear programming analysis. This innovative model not only quantitatively evaluated the driving forces of grain trade through the weight coefficient, but also established a universal model of quantifying grain virtual water flow. Moreover, we reduced data assumptions, such as not considering actual grain imports and transport modes of grain, which improves the credibility of quantitative results. The model quantified virtual water from the perspective of driving impacts and precluded the limitations of trade data. The model can be used in other countries and regions, where trade data is difficult to obtain, to calculate trade patterns. The results are useful for decision makers to implement virtual water strategies, mitigate national water scarcity, and facilitate sustainable development of grain production.
