Abstract With the abundant use of pesticides in agriculture and grassland farming, water contamination unavoidably occurs due to the leaching of pesticide residues into environment. Now, most of the research on degradation of nitroaromatic pesticides residues has focused on nano catalysis-based method, however, effective post-reaction separation and recycling of the tiny nanocatalysts is also a significant technological challenge to be addressed. Herein, we report a simple and versatile strategy for the construction of efficient and recyclable catalysts of polydopamine (PDA)@Ag/polystyrene (PS) films for degradation of pesticides based on multi-purpose PDA microspheres inspired by mussel adhesion. The PDA not only functioned as a scaffold, a reductant as well as a stabilizer for the formation and dispersions of Ag NPs in situ , but also served as an adhesive layer between the nanocatalysts and the substrate. The obtained PDA@Ag/PS films were evaluated for the first time against the catalytic degradation of pendimethalin. Most importantly, the recovery of catalysts can be easily realized by simply pulling out PS substrate from the reaction mixture and the catalytic activity of the nanofilms was found to be equally efficient for seven catalytic cycles. Considering their excellent catalytic activity and recyclability in the degradation of nitroaromatic pesticides, the PDA@Ag/PS films have great potential applications in the fields of environment protection, soil contamination remediation, and sewage treatment. Also, by virtue of the remarkable reducing and stabilizing ability and adhesive versatility of PDA, this approach can be extended to the deposition of various metals and semiconducting NPs, which can be stably anchored on a diverse range of solid substrates regardless of physiochemical and morphology. Abstract: Purpose: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are a group of prevalent pollutants which are produced by incomplete combustion of organic materials such as coal, fuel, tobacco smoking and food cooking. The associations between exposures to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) have not been well studied. Methods: We used the 2001-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to investigate the associations between eight monohydroxy urinary metabolites of four PAHs and PAD. Results: In a logistic regression model, subjects within the middle and highest tertiles of fluorene metabolites, 2-hydroxyfluorene (2-FLUO) and 3-hydroxyfluorene (3-FLUO), and phenanthrene metabolites, 1-hydroxyphenanthrene (1-PHEN) and 2-hydroxyphenanthrene (2-PHEN), had significantly higher prevalence of PAD as compared to subjects within the lowest tertile after adjusting for cigarette smoking, diabetes mellitus and other covariates (For 2-FLUO, the 3rd tertile: OR=2.22, 95% CI=1.13–4.37, p for trend=0.02; For 3-FLUO, the 3rd tertile: OR=2.36, 95% CI: 1.16–4.77, p for trend=0.02; For 1-PHEN, the 3rd tertile: OR=1.84, 95% CI: 1.01–3.37, p for trend=0.04; For 2-PHEN, the 3rd tertile: OR=1.76, 95% CI: 1.07–2.88, p for trend=0.03). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that exposure to PAHs may increase the risk of PAD. Further studies are necessary to explore the associations between PAHs and PAD. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: No previous study exists in China examining the impact of extreme temperature on morbidity outcomes. In this study, we investigated the impact of heat waves and cold spells on hospital admission in Shanghai, China. Daily hospital admission data between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2008 were collected from the Shanghai Health Insurance Bureau. The heat wave was defined as a period of at least 7 consecutive days with daily maximum temperature above 35.0°C and daily average temperatures above the 97th percentile during the study period. The cold spell was defined as a period of at least 7 consecutive days with daily maximum temperature and daily average temperatures below the 3rd percentile during the study period. We calculated excess cases of hospitalization and rate ratios (RRs) to estimate the impacts of both heat wave and cold spell on hospital admission. We identified one heat wave period (from 24 July to 2 August, 2007) and one cold spell period (from 28 January to 3 February, 2008) between 2005 and 2008. The heat wave was associated with 2% (95% CI: 1%–4%), 8% (95%CI: 5%–11%), and 6% (95%CI: 0%–11%) increase of total, cardiovascular and respiratory hospital admission. The cold spell was associated with 38% (95%CI: 35%, 40%), 33% (95%CI: 28%, 37%) and 32% (95%CI: 24%, 40%) increase of total, cardiovascular and respiratory hospital admission. The differences between heat wave and cold spell-related hospital admission were statistically significant for all causes and cardiovascular causes, but not for respiratory causes. In conclusion, both heat wave and cold spell were associated with increased risk of hospital admissions in Shanghai. Cold spell seemed to have a larger impact on hospital admission than heat wave. Abstract: The association between background, enduring environmental exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and cardiovascular diseases has not been well studied in the general population. In this study, we used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001–2004 to investigate the associations between eight monohydroxy PAHs (OH-PAHs) and self-report CVD. In a logistic regression model adjusting for cigarette smoking and other covariates, phenanthrene metabolite, 2-hydroxyphennathrene (2-PHEN), was significantly associated with self-report CVD. Compared to subjects within the lowest tertile of 2-PHEN, subjects within the middle and highest tertiles had higher self-report CVD (the 2nd tertile: AOR=1.29, 95%CI: 0.97–1.72; the 3rd tertile: AOR=1.45, 95%CI: 1.01–2.07; p for trend=0.04). In addition, fluorene metabolite (i.e. 2-hydroxyfluorene) also showed a marginally significant linear trend with self-report CVD (p for trend=0.07). Short-term associations between temperature variation and adverse cardiovascular outcomes have been well documented. However, it remains unclear whether these temperature-related cardiovascular effects are reflected in circulating biomarkers. We aimed to examine the associations between ambient temperature and circulating biomarkers of inflammation, coagulation and vasoconstriction. We collected 207 blood samples from a panel of 35 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Sixteen biomarkers of inflammation, coagulation and vasoconstriction were repeatedly measured over six follow-ups. The short-term associations between air temperature and these biomarkers were assessed by mixed-effect models with controls of demographic characteristics and main air pollutants. We found significant and acute effects of temperature on circulatory biomarkers occurred as early as 3 h after exposure, peaked at 25–48 h and lasted until 72 h after exposure. For example, a 1 °C decrease in the 25–48 h average of air temperature was associated with 2.2%–15.1% increases in biomarkers of inflammation, 1.4%–24.5% of coagulation and 8.2% of vasoconstriction. Our results provided significant evidence that a temperature decline results in a response in biomarkers of inflammation, coagulation and vasoconstriction biomarkers, suggesting them to be the potential biologic mechanisms underlying the cardiovascular effects of temperature variation, and may have implications for disease prevention. Purpose Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous environmental toxic compounds formed from incomplete combustion of carbon-containing materials, cigarette smoking, and food cooking. The genotoxic effects of PAHs have been widely studied. However, their nongenotoxic effects such as their impacts on glucose and metabolic homeostasis have not been well examined. Methods We used the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001–2008 to investigate the associations between eight monohydroxy urinary metabolites of four PAHs and glucose homeostasis as well as metabolic syndrome in 1,878 nondiabetic participants aged 18 years or older. Results In linear regression models, increased level of 2-PHEN was significantly associated with increased insulin resistance ( β coefficient 0.05 ± 0.02), and increased concentrations of 3-FLUO ( β coefficient − 0.02 ± 0.01) were significantly associated with decreased β-cell function (all p < 0.05) after controlling for selected covariates. In addition, increased concentrations of 2-FLUO (OR = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.04–1.51), 1-PHEN (OR = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.09–1.70), and 2-PHEN (OR: 1.49, 95% CI: 1.22–1.83) were significantly associated with a higher prevalence of the metabolic syndrome after adjusting for covariates. Consistent results were observed in the subgroup analysis among nonsmokers. Conclusions Our findings suggest that environmental exposure to PAHs independent of cigarette smoking is associated with insulin resistance, β-cell dysfunction, and increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Abstract: Background: Both temperature and particulate air pollution are associated with increased death risk. However, whether the effect of particulate air pollution on mortality is modified by temperature remains unsettled. Methods: A stratified time-series analysis was conducted to examine whether the effects of particulate matter less than 10μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM10) on mortality was modified by temperature in eight Chinese cities. Poisson regression models incorporating natural spline smoothing functions were used to adjust for long-term and seasonal trends of mortality, as well as other time-varying covariates. The bivariate response surface model was applied to visually examine the potential interacting effect. The associations between PM10 and mortality were stratified by temperature to examine effect modification. Results: The averaged daily concentrations of PM10 in the eight Chinese cities ranged from 65μg/m3 to 124μg/m3, which were much higher than in Western countries. We found evidence that the effects of PM10 on mortality may depend on temperature. The eight-city combined analysis showed that on “normal” (5th–95th percentile) temperature days, a 10-μg/m3 increment in PM10 corresponded to a 0.54% (95% CI, 0.39 to 0.69) increase of total mortality, 0.56% (95% CI, 0.36 to 0.76) increase of cardiovascular mortality, and 0.80% (95% CI, 0.64 to 0.96) increase of respiratory mortality. On high temperature (>95th percentile) days, the estimates increased to 1.35% (95% CI, 0.80 to 1.91) for total mortality, 1.57% (95% CI, 0.69 to 2.46) for cardiovascular mortality, and 1.79% (95% CI, 0.75 to 2.83) for respiratory mortality. We did not observe significant effect modification by extreme low temperature. Conclusions: Extreme high temperature increased the associations of PM10 with daily mortality. Abstract: Controversy remains regarding the relationship between various metrics of ozone (O3) and mortality. In China, the largest developing country, there have been few studies investigating the acute effect of O3 on death. We used three exposure metrics of O3 (1-hour maximum, maximum 8-hour average and 24-hour average) to examine its short-term association with daily mortality in Suzhou, China. We used a Generalized Additive Model (GAM) with penalized splines to analyze the mortality, O3, and covariate data. We examined the association by season, age group, sex and educational level. We found that the current level of O3 in Suzhou is associated with death rates from all causes and cardiovascular diseases. Among various metrics of O3, maximum 8-hour average and 1-hour maximum concentrations seem to be more strongly associated with increased mortality rate compared to 24-hour average concentrations. Using maximum 8-hour average, an inter-quartile range increase of 2-day average O3 (lag 01) corresponds to 2.15% (95%CI, 0.36 to 3.93), 4.47% (95%CI, 1.43 to 7.51), −1.85% (95%CI, −6.91 to 3.22) increase in all-cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality, respectively. The associations between O3 and daily mortality appeared to be more evident in the cool season than in the warm season. In conclusion, maximum 8-hour average and 1-hour maximum concentrations of O3 are associated with daily mortality in Suzhou. Abstract: Evidence concerning the health risks of coarse particles (PM10-2.5) is limited. There have been no multi-city epidemiologic studies of PM10-2.5 in developing Asian countries. We examine the short-term association between PM10-2.5 and daily mortality in three Chinese cities: Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenyang. PM10-2.5 concentrations were estimated by subtracting PM2.5 from PM10 measurements. Data were analyzed using the over-dispersed generalized linear Poisson models. The average daily concentrations of PM10-2.5 were 101μg/m3 for Beijing (2007–2008), 50μg/m3 for Shanghai (2004–2008), and 49μg/m3 for Shenyang (2006–2008). In the single-pollutant models, the three-city combined analysis showed significant associations between PM10-2.5 and daily mortality from both total non-accidental causes and from cardiopulmonary diseases. A 10-μg/m3 increase in 1-day lagged PM10-2.5 was associated with a 0.25% (95% CI: 0.08 to 0.42) increase in total mortality, 0.25% (95% CI: 0.10 to 0.40) increase in cardiovascular mortality, and 0.48% (95% CI: 0.20 to 0.76) increase in respiratory mortality. However, these associations became statistically insignificant after adjustment for PM2.5. PM2.5 was significantly associated with mortality both before and after adjustment for PM10-2.5. In conclusion, there were no statistically significant associations between PM10-2.5 and daily mortality after adjustment for PM2.5 in the three Chinese cities. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Ambient carbon monoxide (CO) is an air pollutant primarily generated by traffic. CO has been associated with increased mortality and morbidity in developed countries, but few studies have been conducted in Asian developing countries. In the China Air Pollution and Health Effects Study (CAPES), the short-term associations between ambient CO and daily mortality were examined in three Chinese cities: Shanghai, Anshan and Taiyuan. Poisson regression models incorporating natural spline smoothing functions were used to adjust for long-term and seasonal trend of mortality, as well as other time-varying covariates. Effect estimates were obtained for each city and then for the cities combined. In both individual-city and combined analysis, significant associations of CO with both total non-accidental and cardiovascular mortality were observed. In the combined analysis, a 1mg/m3 increase of 2-day moving average concentrations of CO corresponded to 2.89% (95%CI: 1.68, 4.11) and 4.17% (95%CI: 2.66, 5.68) increase of total and cardiovascular mortality, respectively. CO was not significantly associated with respiratory mortality. Sensitivity analyses showed that our findings were generally insensitive to alternative model specifications. In conclusion, ambient CO was associated with increased risk of daily mortality in these three cities. Our findings suggest that the role of exposure to CO and other traffic-related air pollutants should be further investigated in China. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is not a criteria pollutant in China, and few studies were conducted in the country to investigate the health impact of PM2.5. In this study, we did a time-stratified case-crossover analysis to examine the association between PM2.5 and daily mortality in Shenyang, an industrial center in northeast China. Daily mortality, air pollution and weather data from August 1, 2006 to December 31, 2008 in Shenyang were collected. A time-stratified case-crossover approach was used to estimate the association of PM2.5 with both total and cause-specific mortality. Controls were selected as matched days of the week in the same month. Potential effect modifiers, such as age, gender, and season, were also examined. We found significant associations between PM2.5 and daily mortality in Shenyang. A 10μg/m3 increment in the 2-day moving average (lag 01) concentrations of PM2.5 corresponded to 0.49% (95% CI: 0.19%, 0.79%), 0.53% (95% CI: 0.09%, 0.97%), and 0.97% (95% CI: 0.01%, 1.94%) increase of total, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality, respectively. The associations appeared to be stronger in older people (aged≥75years), in females and during the warm season. To our knowledge, this is the longest PM2.5 health study in time duration in China. Our findings provide new information on the adverse health effects of PM2.5, and may have implications for environmental policy making and standard setting in China. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Few case-crossover studies were conducted in China to investigate the acute health effects of air pollution. A 10μg/m3 elevation of 2-day moving average (lag 01) concentration in PM10, SO2, NO2 and CO corresponded to 0.67% (95% CI: 0.29%, 1.04%), 0.38% (95% CI: −0.06%, 0.83%), 2.11% (95% CI: 0.22%, 4.00%) and 0.04% (95% CI: 0.01%, 0.07%) increase of cardiovascular mortality. The associations for total and respiratory mortality were generally positive but statistically insignificant. The air pollution health effects were significantly modified by age, but not by gender. Conclusively, our study showed that short-term exposure to air pollution was associated with increased cardiovascular mortality in Anshan. Abstract: Few studies exist in China examining the association of ambient air pollution with morbidity outcomes. We conducted a time-series analysis to examine the association of outdoor air pollutants (PM10, SO2, and NO2) with hospital outpatient and emergency room visits in Shanghai, China, using 3years of daily data (2005–2007). Hospital and air pollution data were collected from the Shanghai Health Insurance Bureau and Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center. Using a natural spline model, we examined effect of air pollutants with different lag structures including both single-day lag and multi-day lag. We examined effects of air pollution for the warm season (from April to September) and cool season (from October to March) separately. We found outdoor air pollution (SO2 and NO2) was associated with increased risk of hospital outpatient and emergency room visits in Shanghai. The effect estimates varied for different lag structures of pollutants’ concentrations. For lag 3, a 10μg/m3 increase in concentration of PM10, SO2 and NO2 corresponded to 0.11% (95%CI: −0.03%, 0.26%), 0.34% (95%CI: 0.06%, 0.61%) and 0.55% (95%CI: 0.14%, 0.97%) increase of outpatient visit; and 0.01% (95%CI: −0.09%, 0.10%), 0.17% (95%CI: 0.00%, 0.35%) and 0.08% (95%CI: −0.18%, 0.33%) increase of emergency room visit. The associations appeared to be more evident in the cool season than in the warm season. In conclusion, short-term exposure to outdoor air pollution was associated with increased risk of hospital outpatient and emergency room visits in Shanghai. Our analyses provide evidence that the current air pollution level has an adverse health effect and strengthen the rationale for further limiting air pollution levels in the city. Abstract: To fulfill its commitment to a successful 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Chinese government made unprecedented efforts to improve the air quality in Beijing. We report findings on air quality and outpatient visits for asthma among adults in Beijing during the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Three study periods were defined: summer baseline (June 1–June 30: before any air pollution controls), pre-Olympics (July 1–August 7: transportation restrictions in effect), and Olympics (August 8–September 20: further restrictions on industrial emissions). Daily data on outpatient asthma visits were obtained from the asthma registry of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital. We used time-series Poisson regression models to estimate the relative risk (RR) for asthma visits associated with pollution levels. The average numbers of outpatient visit for asthma were 12.5 per day at baseline and 7.3 per day during the Olympics. Compared with baseline, the Games were associated with a significant reduction in asthma visits (RR 0.54, 95%CI: 0.39–0.75). Our analysis showed that even in a heavily-polluted city, decreased concentrations of small particles were associated with some reduction in asthma visits in adults. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
