Cognitive impairment is one of the most common problem saffecting older adults. In this study, we investigated whether Tai Chi Chuan and Baduanjin practice can modulate mental control functionand the resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) of the cognitive control network in older adults. Participants in the two exercise groups practiced either Tai Chi Chuan or Baduanjin for 12 weeks, and those in the control group received basic health education. Memory tests and fMRI scans were conducted at baseline and at the end of the study. Seed-based (bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, DLPFC) rsFC analysis was performed. We found that compared to the controls, 1) both Tai Chi Chuan and Baduanjin groups demonstrated significant improvements in mental control function; 2) the Tai Chi Chuan group showed a significant decrease in rsFC between the DLPFC and the left superior frontal gyrus (SFG) and anterior cingulate cortex; and 3) the Baduanjin group showed a significant decrease in rsFC between the DLPFC and the left putamen and insula. Mental control improvement was negatively associated with rsFC DLPFC-putamen changes across all subjects. These findings demonstrate the potential of Tai Chi Chuan and Baduanjin exercises in preventing cognitive decline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gastric carcinoma (GC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. The efficacy of standard chemotherapy for GC, such as cisplatin (CDDP), is dissatisfactory partly due to the toxic/side-effects. Sulforaphane (SFN), which exhibits effective anti-cancer functions, is a phytochemical converted from cruciferous plants. Our present study aimed to identify whether SFN could enhance the anti-cancer effects of low-dose CDDP and to determine the underlying mechanisms. Herein, co-exposure of SFN and CDDP significantly inhibited the viabilities of gastric cancer cells. For the molecular mechanisms, CDDP alone increased the cancer stem cell (CSC)-like properties in gastric cancer cells via activating the interleukin-6 (IL-6)/IL-6 receptor (IL-6R)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signaling. However, SFN could activate the microRNA-124 (miR-124), which directly targets the 3′-untranslated regions (UTR) of the IL-6R and STAT3. Moreover, knockdown of miR-124 eliminated the effects of SFN on CSC-like properties in GC cells, and in turn enhanced the anti-cancer effects of low-dose CDDP. These findings not only suggested a mechanism whereby SFN enhanced the anti-cancer functions of CDDP, but also helped to regard SFN as a potential chemotherapeutic factor in gastric cancer. On February 6, 2023, an Mw 7.9 earthquake occurred in the western section of the East Anatolia Fault Zone (EAFZ). It was subsequently followed by an Mw 7.7 earthquake on the northern branch of the EAFZ, known as the Sürgü Fault Zone. Coseismic deformation fields were derived for these earthquakes using joint evaluation of near-field strong motion data, Global Navigation Satellite System data, and Synthetic Aperture Radar datasets. The coseismic slip distribution model was determined through the joint kinematic finite fault inversion. The Mw 7.9 earthquake was a left-lateral strike-slip event, predominantly occurring at depths up to 20 km. The earthquake displayed three distinct asperities that correlate well with bends and stepovers along the EAFZ. The Mw 7.7 earthquake also exhibited left-lateral strike-slip characteristics, with a major asperity along the Çardak Fault featuring a maximum slip of approximately 9.5 m at depths between 0 and 24 km. The occurrence of this unanticipated large Mw 7.9 catastrophic seismic event on a fault with low-intermediate structural maturity is noteworthy. In the vicinity of immature faults with multiple jogs, stress tends to accumulate at barrier locations. When the accumulated stress near several adjacent barriers reaches a certain threshold, it may result in the transformation of multiple barriers into asperities, triggering cascading ruptures., (© 2024. The initial corrosion process of copper and the corrosion resistance mechanism of Benzotriazole under chloride-containing thin electrolyte layer (TEL) was investigated. After theoretical calculation and experimental characterization, the forming process of [Cu(I)BTA] n film was chemically adsorbed on copper surface by Cu-N bond tightly; corrosion rate increased as TEL thickness decreased. Whilst, energy distribution plot of electrochemical noise provided the validity of corrosion type, and the purported corrosion energy (E c ) deduced from electrochemical noise was approximately proportion to corrosion rate (1/R ct ) with and without the anticorrosion film, which denoted the feasibility to determine corrosion rate by nondestructive on-line monitoring electrochemical noise progress.

The brain has long been known to be the regulation center of itch, but the neuropathology of chronic itch, such as chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), remains unclear. Thus, we aimed to explore the brain areas involved in the pathophysiology of CSU in hopes that our results may provide valuable insights into the treatment of chronic itch conditions. 40 CSU patients and 40 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. Urticaria activity scores 7 (UAS7) were collected to evaluate patient's clinical symptoms. Amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (ALFF), voxel-based morphometry (VBM), and seed-based resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) analysis were used to assess brain activity and related plasticity. Compared with HCs, CSU patients exhibited 1) higher ALFF values in the right ventral striatum / putamen, which were positively associated with clinical symptoms as measured by UAS7; 2) gray matter volume (GMV) increase in the right ventral striatum and putamen; and 3) decreased rs-FC between the right ventral striatum and the right occipital cortex and between the right putamen and the left precentral gyrus. Using multiple-modality brain imaging tools, we demonstrated the dysfunction of the striatum in CSU. Our results may provide valuable insights into the neuropathology and development of chronic itch.
