Abstract Graph theory can be used to address problems with complex network structures. Congenital heart diseases (CHDs) involve complex abnormal connections between chambers, vessels, and organs. We proposed a new method to represent CHDs based on graph theory, wherein vertices were defined as the spaces through which blood flows and edges were defined by the blood flow between the spaces and direction of the blood flow. The CHDs of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) and transposition of the great arteries (TGA) were selected as examples for constructing directed graphs and binary adjacency matrices. Patients with totally repaired TOF, surgically corrected d-TGA, and Fontan circulation undergoing four-dimensional (4D) flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were included as examples for constructing the weighted adjacency matrices. The directed graphs and binary adjacency matrices of the normal heart, extreme TOF undergoing a right modified Blalock–Taussig shunt, and d-TGA with a ventricular septal defect were constructed. The weighted adjacency matrix of totally repaired TOF was constructed using the peak velocities obtained from 4D flow MRI. The developed method is promising for representing CHDs and may be helpful in developing artificial intelligence and conducting future research on CHD.

The NAD(P)H dehydrogenase complex is encoded by 11 ndh genes in plant chloroplast (cp) genomes. However, ndh genes are truncated or deleted in some autotrophic Epidendroideae orchid cp genomes. To determine the evolutionary timing of the gene deletions and the genomic locations of the various ndh genes in orchids, the cp genomes of Vanilla planifolia, Paphiopedilum armeniacum, Paphiopedilum niveum, Cypripedium formosanum, Habenaria longidenticulata, Goodyera fumata and Masdevallia picturata were sequenced; these genomes represent Vanilloideae, Cypripedioideae, Orchidoideae and Epidendroideae subfamilies. Four orchid cp genome sequences were found to contain a complete set of ndh genes. In other genomes, ndh deletions did not correlate to known taxonomic or evolutionary relationships and deletions occurred independently after the orchid family split into different subfamilies. In orchids lacking cp encoded ndh genes, non cp localized ndh sequences were identified. In Erycina pusilla, at least 10 truncated ndh gene fragments were found transferred to the mitochondrial (mt) genome. The phenomenon of orchid ndh transfer to the mt genome existed in ndh-deleted orchids and also in ndh containing species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric (LC-MS/MS) method for simultaneous enantiomeric analysis of flumequine and its metabolite 7-hydroxyflumequine in water and sediment had been developed based on the separation method. Sediment samples were extracted with ACN and EDTA-Mcllvaine buffer solution (40:60, v/v) then were enriched and cleaned-up by Cleanert PEP solid-phase extraction cartridges. The extract solvent, solid cartridges, mobile phase ratios, and chiral separation column were all optimized to reach high sensitivity and selectivity, good peak shape, and satisfactory resolution. The results showed that the calibration curves of flumequine enantiomers and 7-hydroxyflumequine were linear in the range of 1.0 to 200.0 µg/L with correlation coefficients of 0.9822-0.9988, the mean recoveries for both the enantiomers ranged from 69.9-84.6% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) being 13.1% or below. The limits of detection (LODs) for both flumequine enantiomers were 2.5 µg/L and 5.0 µg/kg in water and sediment samples, whereas the limits of quantification (LOQs) were 8.0 µg/L and 15.0 µg/kg, respectively. While the LODs for 7-hydroxyflumequine were 3.2 µg/L in water samples and 7.0 µg/kg in sediment samples. The proposed method will be extended for studies on the degradation kinetics and environmental behaviors and providing additional information for reliable risk assessment of these chiral antibiotics.

This study aimed to examine the relationship between measurements related to heart sounds and the origin of ventricular arrhythmia. We retrospectively evaluated 45 patients undergoing catheter ablation with contemporaneous digital acoustic cardiography of the first heart sound (S1) and the second heart sound (S2). The patients with baseline wide QRS morphology (>120 ms or aberrant conduction), heart failure, valvular heart disease, chronic pulmonary disease, and obesity were excluded. Ventricular arrhythmias from the left ventricle had an increased S1 complexity score and S1 duration in comparison to adjacent sinus beats. On the other hand, ventricular arrhythmia from right ventricle had decreased S1 complexity score and S1 duration in comparison to adjacent sinus beats. The difference of S1 (ΔS1) parameters between premature ventricular complex and sinus beat was significantly smaller in right ventricular arrhythmia group compared with and left ventricular arrhythmia group. For predicting the origin of ventricular arrhythmia, the ΔS1 duration provide better predictive accuracy (sensitivity: 100%, specificity: 100%, cutoff value: -1.28 ms) in comparison to ΔS1 complexity score (sensitivity 71.4%, specificity 75.0%, cutoff value: -0.13). The change of S1 complexity and duration determined from acoustic cardiography could accurately predict the ventricular arrhythmia origin.
