Aiming at the problems of insufficient extraction of asynchronous motor fault features by traditional deep learning algorithms and poor diagnosis of asynchronous motor faults in robust noise environments, this paper proposes an end-to-end fault diagnosis method for asynchronous motors based on IInception-CBAM-IBiGRU. The method first uses a signal-to-grayscale image conversion method to convert one-dimensional vibration signals into two-dimensional images and initially extracts shallow features through two-dimensional convolution; then the Improved Inception (IInception) module is used as a residual block to learning features at different scales with a residual structure, and extracts its important feature information through the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) to extract important feature information and adjust the weight parameters; then the feature information is input to the Improved Bi-directional Gate Recurrent Unit (IBiGRU) to extract its timing features further; finally, the fault identification is achieved by the SoftMax function. The primary hyperparameters in the model are optimized by the Weighted Mean Of Vectors Algorithm (INFO). The experimental results show that the method is effective in fault diagnosis of asynchronous motors, with an accuracy rate close to 100%, and can still maintain a high accuracy rate under the condition of low noise ratio, with good robustness and generalization ability. When traditional EEG signals are collected based on the Nyquist theorem, long-time recordings of EEG signals will produce a large amount of data. At the same time, limited bandwidth, end-to-end delay, and memory space will bring great pressure on the effective transmission of data. The birth of compressed sensing alleviates this transmission pressure. However, using an iterative compressed sensing reconstruction algorithm for EEG signal reconstruction faces complex calculation problems and slow data processing speed, limiting the application of compressed sensing in EEG signal rapid monitoring systems. As such, this paper presents a non-iterative and fast algorithm for reconstructing EEG signals using compressed sensing and deep learning techniques. This algorithm uses the improved residual network model, extracts the feature information of the EEG signal by one-dimensional dilated convolution, directly learns the nonlinear mapping relationship between the measured value and the original signal, and can quickly and accurately reconstruct the EEG signal. The method proposed in this paper has been verified by simulation on the open BCI contest dataset. Overall, it is proved that the proposed method has higher reconstruction accuracy and faster reconstruction speed than the traditional CS reconstruction algorithm and the existing deep learning reconstruction algorithm. This paper proposes a forward layer-wise learning algorithm for CNNs in classification problems. The algorithm utilizes the Separation Index (SI) as a supervised complexity measure to evaluate and train each layer in a forward manner. The proposed method explains that gradually increasing the SI through layers reduces the input data's uncertainties and disturbances, achieving a better feature space representation. Hence, by approximating the SI with a variant of local triplet loss at each layer, a gradient-based learning algorithm is suggested to maximize it. Inspired by the NGRAD (Neural Gradient Representation by Activity Differences) hypothesis, the proposed algorithm operates in a forward manner without explicit error information from the last layer. The algorithm's performance is evaluated on image classification tasks using VGG16, VGG19, AlexNet, and LeNet architectures with CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, Raabin-WBC, and Fashion-MNIST datasets. Additionally, the experiments are applied to text classification tasks using the DBPedia and AG's News datasets. Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression is currently used in the clinic to assess eligibility for immune-checkpoint inhibitors via the tumor proportion score (TPS), but its efficacy is limited by high interobserver variability. Multiple papers have presented systems for the automatic quantification of TPS, but none report on the task of determining cell-level PD-L1 expression and often reserve their evaluation to a single PD-L1 monoclonal antibody or clinical center. In this paper, we report on a deep learning algorithm for detecting PD-L1 negative and positive tumor cells at a cellular level and evaluate it on a cell-level reference standard established by six readers on a multi-centric, multi PD-L1 assay dataset. This reference standard also provides for the first time a benchmark for computer vision algorithms. In addition, in line with other papers, we also evaluate our algorithm at slide-level by measuring the agreement between the algorithm and six pathologists on TPS quantification. We find a moderately low interobserver agreement at cell-level level (mean reader-reader F1 score = 0.68) which our algorithm sits slightly under (mean reader-AI F1 score = 0.55), especially for cases from the clinical center not included in the training set. Despite this, we find good AI-pathologist agreement on quantifying TPS compared to the interobserver agreement (mean reader-reader Cohen's kappa = 0.54, 95% CI 0.26–0.81, mean reader-AI kappa = 0.49, 95% CI 0.27—0.72). In conclusion, our deep learning algorithm demonstrates promise in detecting PD-L1 expression at a cellular level and exhibits favorable agreement with pathologists in quantifying the tumor proportion score (TPS). In this study, the deep learning algorithm of Convolutional Neural Network long short-term memory (CNN–LSTM) is used to classify various jewelry rocks such as agate, turquoise, calcites, and azure from various historical periods and styles related to Shahr-e Sokhteh. Here, the CNN–LSTM architecture includes utilizing CNN layers for the extraction of features from input data mixed with LSTMs for supporting sequence forecasting. It should be mentioned that interpretable deep learning-assisted laser induced breakdown spectroscopy helped achieve excellent performance. For the first time, this paper interprets the Convolutional LSTM effectiveness layer by layer in self-adaptively obtaining LIBS features and the quantitative data of major chemical elements in jewelry rocks. Moreover, Lasso method is applied on data as a factor for investigation of interoperability. The results demonstrated that LIBS can be essentially combined with a deep learning algorithm for the classification of different jewelry songs. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major global health concern, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. While existing literature predominantly focuses on disease classification using clinical data, there exists a critical research gap concerning HCV genotyping based on genomic sequences. Accurate HCV genotyping is essential for patient management and treatment decisions. While the neural models excel at capturing complex patterns, they still face challenges, such as data scarcity, that exist a lot in computational genomics. To overcome this challenges, this paper introduces an advanced deep learning approach for HCV genotyping based on the graphical representation of nucleotide sequences that outperforms classical approaches. Notably, it is effective for both partial and complete HCV genomes and addresses challenges associated with imbalanced datasets. In this work, ten HCV genotypes: 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 2c, 3a, 3b, 4, 5, and 6 were used in the analysis. This study utilizes Chaos Game Representation for 2D mapping of genomic sequences, employing self-supervised learning using convolutional autoencoder for deep feature extraction, resulting in an outstanding performance for HCV genotyping compared to various machine learning and deep learning models. This baseline provides a benchmark against which the performance of the proposed approach and other models can be evaluated. The experimental results showcase a remarkable classification accuracy of over 99%, outperforming traditional deep learning models. This performance demonstrates the capability of the proposed model to accurately identify HCV genotypes in both partial and complete sequences and in dealing with data scarcity for certain genotypes. Early detection of the adenocarcinoma cancer in colon tissue by means of explainable deep learning, by classifying histological images and providing visual explainability on model prediction. Considering that in recent years, deep learning techniques have emerged as powerful techniques in medical image analysis, offering unprecedented accuracy and efficiency, in this paper we propose a method to automatically detect the presence of cancerous cells in colon tissue images. Various deep learning architectures are considered, with the aim of considering the best one in terms of quantitative and qualitative results. As a matter of fact, we consider qualitative results by taking into account the so-called prediction explainability, by providing a way to highlight on the tissue images the areas that from the model point of view are related to the presence of colon cancer. The experimental analysis, performed on 10,000 colon issue images, showed the effectiveness of the proposed method by obtaining an accuracy equal to 0.99. This paper proposes an innovative global solution which is a pioneering work applying automated machine learning algorithms to remarkable precision sparse underwater direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation that views the subaquatic sparse-sampling DOA estimation problem as a classification prediction task. The proposed solution, termed automated multi-layer perceptron discriminative neural network (AutoMPDNN), is built upon a Bayesian optimization framework. AutoMPDNN transforms sparsely sampled time-domain signals into the complex domain, preserving essential components in a one-source single-snapshot scenario. Leveraging Bayesian optimization principles, the algorithm embeds necessary hyperparameters into the loss function, effectively defining it as a maximum likelihood problem using the upper confidence bound function and incorporating sparse signal features. We also explore the model space architecture and introduce variants of AutoMPDNN, denoted as AutoMPDNNs_ln (n = 2,3,4). Through a series of plane wave simulation experiments, it is demonstrated that AutoMPDNN achieves the highest prediction performance for one-source single-snapshot scenarios compared to classical DOA estimation algorithms that incorporate sparse representation approaches, as well as contemporary deep learning DOA methods under varying conditions. This research paper presents a comprehensive investigation into the utilization of color image processing technologies and deep learning algorithms in the development of a robot vision system specifically designed for 8-ball billiards. The sport of billiards, with its various games and ball arrangements, presents unique challenges for robotic vision systems. The proposed methodology addresses these challenges through two main components: object detection and ball pattern recognition. Initially, a robust algorithm is employed to detect the billiard balls using color space transformation and thresholding techniques. This is followed by determining the position of the billiard table through strategic cropping and isolation of the primary table area. The crucial phase involves the intricate task of recognizing ball patterns to differentiate between solid and striped balls. To achieve this, a modified convolutional neural network is utilized, leveraging the Xception network optimized by an innovative algorithm known as the Improved Chaos African Vulture Optimization (ICAVO) algorithm. The ICAVO algorithm enhances the Xception network's performance by efficiently exploring the solution space and avoiding local optima. The results of this study demonstrate a significant enhancement in recognition accuracy, with the Xception/ICAVO model achieving remarkable recognition rates for both solid and striped balls. Over the past decades, the software industry has expanded to include all industries. Since stakeholders tend to use it to get their work done, software houses seek to estimate the cost of the software, which includes calculating the effort, time, and resources required. Although many researchers have worked to estimate it, the prediction accuracy results are still inaccurate and unstable. Estimating it requires a lot of effort. Therefore, there is an urgent need for modern techniques that contribute to cost estimation. This paper seeks to present a model based on deep learning and machine learning techniques by combining convolutional neural networks (CNN) and the particle swarm algorithm (PSO) in the context of time series forecasting, which enables feature extraction and automatic tuning of hyperparameters, which reduces the manual effort of selecting parameters and contributes to fine-tuning. The use of PSO also enhances the robustness and generalization ability of the CNN model and its iterative nature allows for efficient discovery of hyperparameter similarity. The model was trained and tested on 13 different benchmark datasets and evaluated through six metrics: mean absolute error (MAE), mean square error (MSE), mean magnitude relative error (MMRE), root mean square error (RMSE), median magnitude relative error (MdMRE), and prediction accuracy (PRED). Comparative results reveal that the performance of the proposed model is better than other methods for all datasets and evaluation criteria. In recent years, the growth spurt of medical imaging data has led to the development of various machine learning algorithms for various healthcare applications. The MedMNISTv2 dataset, a comprehensive benchmark for 2D biomedical image classification, encompasses diverse medical imaging modalities such as Fundus Camera, Breast Ultrasound, Colon Pathology, Blood Cell Microscope etc. Highly accurate classifications performed on these datasets is crucial for identification of various diseases and determining the course of treatment. This research paper presents a comprehensive analysis of four subsets within the MedMNISTv2 dataset: BloodMNIST, BreastMNIST, PathMNIST and RetinaMNIST. Each of these selected datasets is of diverse data modalities and comes with various sample sizes, and have been selected to analyze the efficiency of the model against diverse data modalities. The study explores the idea of assessing the Vision Transformer Model's ability to capture intricate patterns and features crucial for these medical image classification and thereby transcend the benchmark metrics substantially. The methodology includes pre-processing the input images which is followed by training the ViT-base-patch16-224 model on the mentioned datasets. The performance of the model is assessed using key metrices and by comparing the classification accuracies achieved with the benchmark accuracies. With the assistance of ViT, the new benchmarks achieved for BloodMNIST, BreastMNIST, PathMNIST and RetinaMNIST are 97.90%, 90.38%, 94.62% and 57%, respectively. The challenge of developing an Android malware detection framework that can identify malware in real-world apps is difficult for academicians and researchers. The vulnerability lies in the permission model of Android. Therefore, it has attracted the attention of various researchers to develop an Android malware detection model using permission or a set of permissions. Academicians and researchers have used all extracted features in previous studies, resulting in overburdening while creating malware detection models. But, the effectiveness of the machine learning model depends on the relevant features, which help in reducing the value of misclassification errors and have excellent discriminative power. A feature selection framework is proposed in this research paper that helps in selecting the relevant features. In the first stage of the proposed framework, t-test, and univariate logistic regression are implemented on our collected feature data set to classify their capacity for detecting malware. Multivariate linear regression stepwise forward selection and correlation analysis are implemented in the second stage to evaluate the correctness of the features selected in the first stage. Furthermore, the resulting features are used as input in the development of malware detection models using three ensemble methods and a neural network with six different machine-learning algorithms. The developed models' performance is compared using two performance parameters: F-measure and Accuracy. The experiment is performed by using half a million different Android apps. The empirical findings reveal that malware detection model developed using features selected by implementing proposed feature selection framework achieved higher detection rate as compared to the model developed using all extracted features data set. Further, when compared to previously developed frameworks or methodologies, the experimental results indicates that model developed in this study achieved an accuracy of 98.8%. Sensors, wearables, mobile devices, and other Internet of Things (IoT) devices are becoming increasingly integrated into all aspects of our lives. They are capable of gathering enormous amounts of data, such as image data, which can then be sent to the cloud for processing. However, this results in an increase in network traffic and latency. To overcome these difficulties, edge computing has been proposed as a paradigm for computing that brings processing closer to the location where data is produced. This paper explores the merging of cloud and edge computing for IoT and investigates approaches using machine learning for dimensionality reduction of images on the edge, employing the autoencoder deep learning-based approach and principal component analysis (PCA). The encoded data is then sent to the cloud server, where it is used directly for any machine learning task without significantly impacting the accuracy of the data processed in the cloud. The proposed approach has been evaluated on an object detection task using a set of 4000 images randomly chosen from three datasets: COCO, human detection, and HDA datasets. Colorectal cancer (CRC) exhibits a significant death rate that consistently impacts human lives worldwide. Histopathological examination is the standard method for CRC diagnosis. However, it is complicated, time-consuming, and subjective. Computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) systems using digital pathology can help pathologists diagnose CRC faster and more accurately than manual histopathology examinations. Deep learning algorithms especially convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are advocated for diagnosis of CRC. Nevertheless, most previous CAD systems obtained features from one CNN, these features are of huge dimension. Also, they relied on spatial information only to achieve classification. In this paper, a CAD system is proposed called "Color-CADx" for CRC recognition. Different CNNs namely ResNet50, DenseNet201, and AlexNet are used for end-to-end classification at different training–testing ratios. Moreover, features are extracted from these CNNs and reduced using discrete cosine transform (DCT). DCT is also utilized to acquire spectral representation. Afterward, it is used to further select a reduced set of deep features. Furthermore, DCT coefficients obtained in the previous step are concatenated and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) feature selection approach is applied to choose significant features. Finally, machine learning classifiers are employed for CRC classification. Two publicly available datasets were investigated which are the NCT-CRC-HE-100 K dataset and the Kather_texture_2016_image_tiles dataset. The highest achieved accuracy reached 99.3% for the NCT-CRC-HE-100 K dataset and 96.8% for the Kather_texture_2016_image_tiles dataset. DCT and ANOVA have successfully lowered feature dimensionality thus reducing complexity. Speech emotion recognition (SER) has gained an increased interest during the last decades as part of enriched affective computing. As a consequence, a variety of engineering approaches have been developed addressing the challenge of the SER problem, exploiting different features, learning algorithms, and datasets. In this paper, we propose the application of the graph theory for classifying emotionally-colored speech signals. Graph theory provides tools for extracting statistical as well as structural information from any time series. We propose to use the mentioned information as a novel feature set. Furthermore, we suggest setting a unique feature-based identity for each emotion belonging to each speaker. The emotion classification is performed by a Random Forest classifier in a Leave-One-Speaker-Out Cross Validation (LOSO-CV) scheme. The proposed method is compared with two state-of-the-art approaches involving well known hand-crafted features as well as deep learning architectures operating on mel-spectrograms. Experimental results on three datasets, EMODB (German, acted) and AESDD (Greek, acted), and DEMoS (Italian, in-the-wild), reveal that our proposed method outperforms the comparative methods in these datasets. Modern web application development involves handling enormous amounts of sensitive and consequential data. Security is, therefore, a crucial component of developing web applications. A web application's security is concerned with safeguarding the data it processes. The web application framework must have safeguards to stop and find application vulnerabilities. Among all web application attacks, SQL injection and XSS attacks are common, which may lead to severe damage to Web application data or web functionalities. Currently, there are many solutions provided by various study for SQLi and XSS attack detection, but most of the work shown have used either SQL/XSS payload-based detection or HTTP request-based detection. Few solutions available can detect SQLi and XSS attacks, but these methods provide very high false positive rates, and the accuracy of these models can further be improved. We proposed a novel approach for securing web applications from both cross-site scripting attacks and SQL injection attacks using decoding and standardization of SQL and XSS payloads and HTTP requests and trained our model using hybrid deep learning networks in this paper. The proposed hybrid DL model combines the strengths of CNNs in extracting features from input data and LSTMs in capturing temporal dependencies in sequential data. The soundness of our approach lies in the use of deep learning techniques that can identify subtle patterns in the data that traditional machine learning-based methods might miss. We have created a testbed dataset of Normal and SQLi/XSS HTTP requests and evaluated the performance of our model on this dataset. We have also trained and evaluated the proposed model on the Benchmark dataset HTTP CSIC 2010 and another SQL/XSS payload dataset. The experimental findings show that our proposed approach effectively identifies these attacks with high accuracy and a low percentage of false positives. Additionally, our model performed better than traditional machine learning-based methods. This soundness approach can be applied to various network security applications such as intrusion detection systems and web application firewalls. Sound is one of the primary forms of sensory information that we use to perceive our surroundings. Usually, a sound event is a sequence of an audio clip obtained from an action. The action can be rhythm patterns, music genre, people speaking for a few seconds, etc. The sound event classification address distinguishes what kind of audio clip it is from the given audio sequence. Nowadays, it is a common issue to solve in the following pipeline: audio pre-processing→perceptual feature extraction→classification algorithm. In this paper, we improve the traditional sound event classification algorithm to identify unknown sound events by using the deep learning method. The compact cluster structure in the feature space for known classes helps recognize unknown classes by allowing large room to locate unknown samples in the embedded feature space. Based on this concept, we applied center loss and supervised contrastive loss to optimize the model. The center loss tries to minimize the intra- class distance by pulling the embedded feature into the cluster center, while the contrastive loss disperses the inter-class features from one another. In addition, we explored the performance of self-supervised learning in detecting unknown sound events. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed open-set sound event classification algorithm and self-supervised learning approach achieve sustained performance improvements in various datasets. Automated disease diagnosis and prediction, powered by AI, play a crucial role in enabling medical professionals to deliver effective care to patients. While such predictive tools have been extensively explored in resource-rich languages like English, this manuscript focuses on predicting disease categories automatically from symptoms documented in the Afaan Oromo language, employing various classification algorithms. This study encompasses machine learning techniques such as support vector machines, random forests, logistic regression, and Naïve Bayes, as well as deep learning approaches including LSTM, GRU, and Bi-LSTM. Due to the unavailability of a standard corpus, we prepared three data sets with different numbers of patient symptoms arranged into 10 categories. The two feature representations, TF-IDF and word embedding, were employed. The performance of the proposed methodology has been evaluated using accuracy, recall, precision, and F1 score. The experimental results show that, among machine learning models, the SVM model using TF-IDF had the highest accuracy and F1 score of 94.7%, while the LSTM model using word2vec embedding showed an accuracy rate of 95.7% and F1 score of 96.0% from deep learning models. To enhance the optimal performance of each model, several hyper-parameter tuning settings were used. Abstract This paper presents a comparison of machine learning (ML) methods used for three-dimensional localization of partial discharges (PD) in a power transformer tank. The study examines ML and deep learning (DL) methods, ranging from support vector machines (SVM) to more complex approaches like convolutional neural networks (CNN). Multiple case studies are considered, each with different attributes, including sensor position, frequency content of the PD signal, and size of the transformer tank. The paper focuses on predicting the PD location in three-dimensional space using single-sensor electric field measurements. Various aspects of each method are analyzed, such as the input signal, core methodology, correlation coefficient between the predicted location and the actual location, and root mean square error (RMSE). These features are discussed and compared across the different methods. The results indicate that the CNN model exhibits superior performance in terms of location accuracy among the methods considered.

The spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) leads to challenging complications and losses of human lives plus medical resources, with a high expectancy of deterioration in the future if the problem is not controlled. From a machine learning perspective, data-driven models could aid clinicians and microbiologists by anticipating the resistance beforehand. Our study serves as the first attempt to harness deep learning (DL) techniques and the multimodal data available in electronic health records (EHR) for predicting AMR. In this work, we utilize and preprocess the MIMIC-IV database extensively to produce separate structured input sources for time-invariant and time-series data customized to the AMR task. Then, a multimodality fusion approach merges the two modalities with clinical notes to determine resistance based on an antibiotic or a pathogen. Machine learning is increasingly applied to Earth Observation (EO) data to obtain datasets that contribute towards international accords. However, these datasets contain inherent uncertainty that needs to be quantified reliably to avoid negative consequences. In response to the increased need to report uncertainty, we bring attention to the promise of conformal prediction within the domain of EO. Unlike previous uncertainty quantification methods, conformal prediction offers statistically valid prediction regions while concurrently supporting any machine learning model and data distribution. To support the need for conformal prediction, we reviewed EO datasets and found that only 22.5% of the datasets incorporated a degree of uncertainty information, with unreliable methods prevalent. Current open implementations require moving large amounts of EO data to the algorithms. We introduced Google Earth Engine native modules that bring conformal prediction to the data and compute, facilitating the integration of uncertainty quantification into existing traditional and deep learning modelling workflows. To demonstrate the versatility and scalability of these tools we apply them to valued EO applications spanning local to global extents, regression, and classification tasks. Subsequently, we discuss the opportunities arising from the use of conformal prediction in EO. Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques are increasingly applied across various domains, favoured by the growing acquisition and public availability of large, complex datasets. Despite this trend, AI publications often suffer from lack of reproducibility and poor generalisation of findings, undermining scientific value and contributing to global research waste. To address these issues and focusing on the learning aspect of the AI field, we present RENOIR (REpeated random sampliNg fOr machIne leaRning), a modular open-source platform for robust and reproducible machine learning (ML) analysis. RENOIR adopts standardised pipelines for model training and testing, introducing elements of novelty, such as the dependence of the performance of the algorithm on the sample size. Additionally, RENOIR offers automated generation of transparent and usable reports, aiming to enhance the quality and reproducibility of AI studies. To demonstrate the versatility of our tool, we applied it to benchmark datasets from health, computer science, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) domains. Furthermore, we showcase RENOIR's successful application in recently published studies, where it identified classifiers for SET2D and TP53 mutation status in cancer. Finally, we present a use case where RENOIR was employed to address a significant pharmacological challenge—predicting drug efficacy. Recent advancements in machine learning and deep learning have revolutionized various computer vision applications, including object detection, tracking, and classification. This research investigates the application of deep learning for cattle lameness detection in dairy farming. Our study employs image processing techniques and deep learning methods for cattle detection, tracking, and lameness classification. We utilize two powerful object detection algorithms: Mask-RCNN from Detectron2 and the popular YOLOv8. Their performance is compared to identify the most effective approach for this application. Bounding boxes are drawn around detected cattle to assign unique local IDs, enabling individual tracking and isolation throughout the video sequence. Additionally, mask regions generated by the chosen detection algorithm provide valuable data for feature extraction, which is crucial for subsequent lameness classification. The extracted cattle mask region values serve as the basis for feature extraction, capturing relevant information indicative of lameness. These features, combined with the local IDs assigned during tracking, are used to compute a lameness score for each cattle. We explore the efficacy of various established machine learning algorithms, such as Support Vector Machines (SVM), AdaBoost and so on, in analyzing the extracted lameness features. Evaluation of the proposed system was conducted across three key domains: detection, tracking, and lameness classification. Notably, the detection module employing Detectron2 achieved an impressive accuracy of 98.98%. Similarly, the tracking module attained a high accuracy of 99.50%. In lameness classification, AdaBoost emerged as the most effective algorithm, yielding the highest overall average accuracy (77.9%). Other established machine learning algorithms, including Decision Trees (DT), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and Random Forests, also demonstrated promising performance (DT: 75.32%, SVM: 75.20%, Random Forest: 74.9%). In additive manufacturing (AM), process defects such as keyhole pores are difficult to anticipate, affecting the quality and integrity of the AM-produced materials. Hence, considerable efforts have aimed to predict these process defects by training machine learning (ML) models using passive measurements such as acoustic emissions. This work considered a dataset in which keyhole pores of a laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) experiment were identified using X-ray radiography and then registered both in space and time to acoustic measurements recorded during the LPBF experiment. Due to AM's intrinsic process controls, where a pore-forming event is relatively rare, the acoustic datasets collected during monitoring include more non-pores than pores. In other words, the dataset for ML model development is imbalanced. Moreover, this imbalanced and sparse data phenomenon remains ubiquitous across many AM monitoring schemes since training data is nontrivial to collect. Hence, we propose a machine learning approach to improve this dataset imbalance and enhance the prediction accuracy of pore-labeled data. Specifically, we investigate how data augmentation helps predict pores and non-pores better. This imbalance is improved using recent advances in data augmentation called Mixup, a weak-supervised learning method. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are trained on original and augmented datasets, and an appreciable increase in performance is reported when testing on five different experimental trials. When ML models are trained on original and augmented datasets, they achieve an accuracy of 95% and 99% on test datasets, respectively. Accurate classification of tooth development stages from orthopantomograms (OPG) is crucial for dental diagnosis, treatment planning, age assessment, and forensic applications. This study aims to develop an automated method for classifying third molar development stages using OPGs. Initially, our data consisted of 3422 OPG images, each classified and curated by expert evaluators. The dataset includes images from both Q3 (lower jaw left side) and Q4 (lower right side) regions extracted from panoramic images, resulting in a total of 6624 images for analysis. Following data collection, the methodology employs region of interest extraction, pre-filtering, and extensive data augmentation techniques to enhance classification accuracy. The deep neural network model, including architectures such as EfficientNet, EfficientNetV2, MobileNet Large, MobileNet Small, ResNet18, and ShuffleNet, is optimized for this task. Our findings indicate that EfficientNet achieved the highest classification accuracy at 83.7%. Other architectures achieved accuracies ranging from 71.57 to 82.03%. The variation in performance across architectures highlights the influence of model complexity and task-specific features on classification accuracy. Data categorization is a top concern in medical data to predict and detect illnesses; thus, it is applied in modern healthcare informatics. In modern informatics, machine learning and deep learning models have enjoyed great attention for categorizing medical data and improving illness detection. However, the existing techniques, such as features with high dimensionality, computational complexity, and long-term execution duration, raise fundamental problems. This study presents a novel classification model employing metaheuristic methods to maximize efficient positives on Chronic Kidney Disease diagnosis. The medical data is initially massively pre-processed, where the data is purified with various mechanisms, including missing values resolution, data transformation, and the employment of normalization procedures. The focus of such processes is to leverage the handling of the missing values and prepare the data for deep analysis. We adopt the Binary Grey Wolf Optimization method, a reliable subset selection feature using metaheuristics. This operation is aimed at improving illness prediction accuracy. In the classification step, the model adopts the Extreme Learning Machine with hidden nodes through data optimization to predict the presence of CKD. The complete classifier evaluation employs established measures, including recall, specificity, kappa, F-score, and accuracy, in addition to the feature selection. Storms can cause significant damage, severe social disturbance and loss of human life, but predicting them is challenging due to their infrequent occurrence. To overcome this problem, a novel deep learning and machine learning approach based on long short-term memory (LSTM) and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) was applied to predict storm characteristics and occurrence in Western France. A combination of data from buoys and a storm database between 1996 and 2020 was processed for model training and testing. The models were trained and validated with the dataset from January 1996 to December 2015 and the trained models were then used to predict storm characteristics and occurrence from January 2016 to December 2020. The LSTM model used to predict storm characteristics showed great accuracy in forecasting temperature and pressure, with challenges observed in capturing extreme values for wave height and wind speed. The trained XGBoost model, on the other hand, performed extremely well in predicting storm occurrence. The methodology adopted can help reduce the impact of storms on humans and objects. Cervical cancer, the second most prevalent cancer affecting women, arises from abnormal cell growth in the cervix, a crucial anatomical structure within the uterus. The significance of early detection cannot be overstated, prompting the use of various screening methods such as Pap smears, colposcopy, and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) testing to identify potential risks and initiate timely intervention. These screening procedures encompass visual inspections, Pap smears, colposcopies, biopsies, and HPV-DNA testing, each demanding the specialized knowledge and skills of experienced physicians and pathologists due to the inherently subjective nature of cancer diagnosis. In response to the imperative for efficient and intelligent screening, this article introduces a groundbreaking methodology that leverages pre-trained deep neural network models, including Alexnet, Resnet-101, Resnet-152, and InceptionV3, for feature extraction. The fine-tuning of these models is accompanied by the integration of diverse machine learning algorithms, with ResNet152 showcasing exceptional performance, achieving an impressive accuracy rate of 98.08%. Abstract Early detection of the adenocarcinoma cancer in colon tissue by means of explainable deep learning, by classifying histological images and providing visual explainability on model prediction. Considering that in recent years, deep learning techniques have emerged as powerful techniques in medical image analysis, offering unprecedented accuracy and efficiency, in this paper we propose a method to automatically detect the presence of cancerous cells in colon tissue images. Various deep learning architectures are considered, with the aim of considering the best one in terms of quantitative and qualitative results. As a matter of fact, we consider qualitative results by taking into account the so-called prediction explainability, by providing a way to highlight on the tissue images the areas that from the model point of view are related to the presence of colon cancer. The experimental analysis, performed on 10,000 colon issue images, showed the effectiveness of the proposed method by obtaining an accuracy equal to 0.99. The experimental analysis shows that the proposed method can be successfully exploited for colon cancer detection and localisation from tissue images.

Abstract Internet of Things (IoT) integration in healthcare improves patient care while also making healthcare delivery systems more effective and economical. To fully realize the advantages of IoT in healthcare, it is imperative to overcome issues with data security, interoperability, and ethical considerations. IoT sensors periodically measure the health-related data of the patients and share it with a server for further evaluation. At the server, different machine learning algorithms are applied which help in early diagnosis of diseases and issue alerts in case vital signs are out of the normal range. Different cyber attacks can be launched on IoT devices which can result in compromised security and privacy of applications such as health care. In this paper, we utilize the publicly available Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity (CIC) IoT dataset to model machine learning techniques for efficient detection of anomalous network traffic. The dataset consists of 33 types of IoT attacks which are divided into 7 main categories. In the current study, the dataset is pre-processed, and a balanced representation of classes is used in generating a non-biased supervised (Random Forest, Adaptive Boosting, Logistic Regression, Perceptron, Deep Neural Network) machine learning models. These models are analyzed further by eliminating highly correlated features, reducing dimensionality, minimizing overfitting, and speeding up training times. Random Forest was found to perform optimally across binary and multiclass classification of IoT Attacks with an approximate accuracy of 99.55% under both reduced and all feature space. This improvement was complimented by a reduction in computational response time which is essential for real-time attack detection and response.

Hepatitis C, a particularly dangerous form of viral hepatitis caused by hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, is a major socio-economic and public health problem. Due to the rapid development of deep learning, it has become a common practice to apply deep learning to the healthcare industry to improve the effectiveness and accuracy of disease identification. In order to improve the effectiveness and accuracy of hepatitis C detection, this study proposes an improved denoising autoencoder (IDAE) and applies it to hepatitis C disease detection. Conventional denoising autoencoder introduces random noise at the input layer of the encoder. However, due to the presence of these features, encoders that directly add random noise may mask certain intrinsic properties of the data, making it challenging to learn deeper features. In this study, the problem of data information loss in traditional denoising autoencoding is addressed by incorporating the concept of residual neural networks into an enhanced denoising autoencoder. In our experimental study, we applied this enhanced denoising autoencoder to the open-source Hepatitis C dataset and the results showed significant results in feature extraction. While existing baseline machine learning methods have less than 90% accuracy and integrated algorithms and traditional autoencoders have only 95% correctness, the improved IDAE achieves 99% accuracy in the downstream hepatitis C classification task, which is a 9% improvement over a single algorithm, and a nearly 4% improvement over integrated algorithms and other autoencoders. The above results demonstrate that IDAE can effectively capture key disease features and improve the accuracy of disease prediction in hepatitis C data. This indicates that IDAE has the potential to be widely used in the detection and management of hepatitis C and similar diseases, especially in the development of early warning systems, progression prediction and personalised treatment strategies. Gastric cancer is a highly prevalent disease that poses a serious threat to public health. In clinical practice, gastroscopy is frequently used by medical practitioners to screen for gastric cancer. However, the symptoms of gastric cancer at different stages of advancement vary significantly, particularly in the case of early gastric cancer (EGC). The manifestations of EGC are often indistinct, leading to a detection rate of less than 10%. In recent years, researchers have focused on leveraging deep learning algorithms to assist medical professionals in detecting EGC and thereby improve detection rates. To enhance the ability of deep learning to detect EGC and segment lesions in gastroscopic images, an Improved Mask R-CNN (IMR-CNN) model was proposed. This model incorporates a "Bi-directional feature extraction and fusion module" and a "Purification module for feature channel and space" based on the Mask R-CNN (MR-CNN). Our study includes a dataset of 1120 images of EGC for training and validation of the models. The experimental results indicate that the IMR-CNN model outperforms the original MR-CNN model, with Precision, Recall, Accuracy, Specificity and F1-Score values of 92.9%, 95.3%, 93.9%, 92.5% and 94.1%, respectively. Mine operational safety is an important aspect of maintaining the operational continuity of a mining area. In this study, we used the InSAR time series to analyze land surface changes using the ICOPS (improved combined scatterers with optimized point scatters) method. This ICOPS method combines persistent scatterers (PS) with distributed scatterers (DS) to increase surface deformation analysis's spatial coverage and quality. One of the improvements of this study is the use of machine learning in postprocessing, based on convolutional neural networks, to increase the reliability of results. This study used data from the Sentinel-1 SAR C-band satellite during the 2016–2022 observation period at the Musan mine, North Korea. In the InSAR surface deformation time analysis, the maximum average rate of land subsidence was approximately > 15.00 cm per year, with total surface deformation of 170 cm and 70 cm for the eastern dumping area and the western dumping area, respectively. Analyzing the mechanism of land surface changes also involved evaluating the geological conditions in the Musan mining area. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive disease leading to cognitive decline, and to prevent it, researchers seek to diagnose mild cognitive impairment (MCI) early. Particularly, non-amnestic MCI (naMCI) is often mistaken for normal aging as the representative symptom of AD, memory decline, is absent. Subjective cognitive decline (SCD), an intermediate step between normal aging and MCI, is crucial for prediction or early detection of MCI, which determines the presence of AD spectrum pathology. We developed a computer-based cognitive task to classify the presence or absence of AD pathology and stage within the AD spectrum, and attempted to perform multi-stage classification through electroencephalography (EEG) during resting and memory encoding state. The resting and memory-encoding states of 58 patients (20 with SCD, 10 with naMCI, 18 with aMCI, and 10 with AD) were measured and classified into four groups. We extracted features that could reflect the phase, spectral, and temporal characteristics of the resting and memory-encoding states. For the classification, we compared nine machine learning models and three deep learning models using Leave-one-subject-out strategy. Significant correlations were found between the existing neurophysiological test scores and performance of our computer-based cognitive task for all cognitive domains. In all models used, the memory-encoding states realized a higher classification performance than resting states. The best model for the 4-class classification was cKNN. The highest accuracy using resting state data was 67.24%, while it was 93.10% using memory encoding state data. This study involving participants with SCD, naMCI, aMCI, and AD focused on early Alzheimer's diagnosis. The research used EEG data during resting and memory encoding states to classify these groups, demonstrating the significance of cognitive process-related brain waves for diagnosis. Migraine headache, a prevalent and intricate neurovascular disease, presents significant challenges in its clinical identification. Existing techniques that use subjective pain intensity measures are insufficiently accurate to make a reliable diagnosis. Even though headaches are a common condition with poor diagnostic specificity, they have a significant negative influence on the brain, body, and general human function. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of core muscles in female sexual dysfunction (FSD) and develop comprehensive rehabilitation programs to address this issue. We aim to answer the following research questions: what are the roles of core muscles in FSD, and how can machine and deep learning models accurately predict changes in core muscles during FSD? FSD is a common condition that affects women of all ages, characterized by symptoms such as decreased libido, difficulty achieving orgasm, and pain during intercourse. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of changes in core muscles during FSD using machine and deep learning. We evaluated the performance of multiple models, including multi-layer perceptron (MLP), long short-term memory (LSTM), convolutional neural network (CNN), recurrent neural network (RNN), ElasticNetCV, random forest regressor, SVR, and Bagging regressor. The models were evaluated based on mean squared error (MSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and R-squared (R2) score. Our results show that CNN and random forest regressor are the most accurate models for predicting changes in core muscles during FSD. CNN achieved the lowest MSE (0.002) and the highest R2 score (0.988), while random forest regressor also performed well with an MSE of 0.0021 and an R2 score of 0.9905. Our study demonstrates that machine and deep learning models can accurately predict changes in core muscles during FSD. The neglected core muscles play a significant role in FSD, highlighting the need for comprehensive rehabilitation programs that address these muscles. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a monogenic, rare disease, characterized by the formation of multiple cysts that grow out of the renal tubules. Despite intensive attempts to develop new drugs or repurpose existing ones, there is currently no definitive cure for ADPKD. This is primarily due to the complex and variable pathogenesis of the disease and the lack of models that can faithfully reproduce the human phenotype. Therefore, the development of models that allow automated detection of cysts' growth directly on human kidney tissue is a crucial step in the search for efficient therapeutic solutions. Artificial Intelligence methods, and deep learning algorithms in particular, can provide powerful and effective solutions to such tasks, and indeed various architectures have been proposed in the literature in recent years. Here, we comparatively review state-of-the-art deep learning segmentation models, using as a testbed a set of sequential RGB immunofluorescence images from 4 in vitro experiments with 32 engineered polycystic kidney tubules. To gain a deeper understanding of the detection process, we implemented both pixel-wise and cyst-wise performance metrics to evaluate the algorithms. Overall, two models stand out as the best performing, namely UNet++ and UACANet: the latter uses a self-attention mechanism introducing some explainability aspects that can be further exploited in future developments, thus making it the most promising algorithm to build upon towards a more refined cyst-detection platform. UACANet model achieves a cyst-wise Intersection over Union of 0.83, 0.91 for Recall, and 0.92 for Precision when applied to detect large-size cysts. Postpartum Depression Disorder (PPDD) is a prevalent mental health condition and results in severe depression and suicide attempts in the social community. Prompt actions are crucial in tackling PPDD, which requires a quick recognition and accurate analysis of the probability factors associated with this condition. This concern requires attention. The primary aim of our research is to investigate the feasibility of anticipating an individual's mental state by categorizing individuals with depression from those without depression using a dataset consisting of text along with audio recordings from patients diagnosed with PPDD. This research proposes a hybrid PPDD framework that combines Improved Bi-directional Long Short-Term Memory (IBi-LSTM) with Transfer Learning (TL) based on two Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures, respectively CNN-text and CNN audio. In the proposed model, the CNN section efficiently utilizes TL to obtain crucial knowledge from text and audio characteristics, whereas the improved Bi-LSTM module combines written material and sound data to obtain intricate chronological interpersonal relationships. The proposed model incorporates an attention technique to augment the effectiveness of the Bi-LSTM scheme. An experimental analysis is conducted on the PPDD online textual and speech audio dataset collected from UCI. It includes textual features such as age, women's health tracks, medical histories, demographic information, daily life metrics, psychological evaluations, and 'speech records' of PPDD patients. Data pre-processing is applied to maintain the data integrity and achieve reliable model performance. The proposed model demonstrates a great performance in better precision, recall, accuracy, and F1-score over existing deep learning models, including VGG-16, Base-CNN, and CNN-LSTM. These metrics indicate the model's ability to differentiate among women at risk of PPDD vs. non-PPDD. In addition, the feature importance analysis demonstrates that specific risk factors substantially impact the prediction of PPDD. Hail, a highly destructive weather phenomenon, necessitates critical identification and forecasting for the protection of human lives and properties. The identification and forecasting of hail are vital for ensuring human safety and safeguarding assets. This research proposes a deep learning algorithm named Dual Attention Module EfficientNet (DAM-EfficientNet), based on EfficientNet, for detecting hail weather conditions. DAM-EfficientNet was evaluated using FY-4A satellite imagery and real hail fall records, achieving an accuracy of 98.53% in hail detection, a 97.92% probability of detection, a false alarm rate of 2.08%, and a critical success index of 95.92%. DAM-EfficientNet outperforms existing deep learning models in terms of accuracy and detection capability, with fewer parameters and computational needs. The results validate DAM-EfficientNet's effectiveness and superior performance in hail weather detection. Case studies indicate that the model can accurately forecast potential hail-affected areas and times. Overall, the DAM-EfficientNet model proves to be effective in identifying hail weather, offering robust support for weather disaster alerts and prevention. Fueled by the rapid development of machine learning (ML) and greater access to cloud computing and graphics processing units, various deep learning based models have been proposed for improving performance of ultrasonic guided wave structural health monitoring (GW-SHM) systems, especially to counter complexity and heterogeneity in data due to varying environmental factors (e.g., temperature) and types of damages. Such models typically comprise of millions of trainable parameters, and therefore add to cost of deployment due to requirements of cloud connectivity and processing, thus limiting the scale of deployment of GW-SHM. In this work, we propose an alternative solution that leverages TinyML framework for development of light-weight ML models that could be directly deployed on embedded edge devices. The utility of our solution is illustrated by presenting an unsupervised learning framework for damage detection in honeycomb composite sandwich structure with disbond and delamination type of damages, validated using data generated by finite element simulations and experiments performed at various temperatures in the range 0–90 °C. We demonstrate a fully-integrated solution using a Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA for data acquisition and control, and edge-inference of damage. Despite the limited number of features, the lightweight model shows reasonably high accuracy, thereby enabling detection of small size defects with improved sensitivity on an edge device for online GW-SHM. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) pose a significant threat to human well-being and the ecosystem. However, in managing the many thousands of uncharacterized chemical entities, the high-throughput screening of EDCs using relevant biological endpoints remains challenging. Three-dimensional (3D) culture technology enables the development of more physiologically relevant systems in more realistic biochemical microenvironments. The high-content and quantitative imaging techniques enable quantifying endpoints associated with cell morphology, cell–cell interaction, and microtissue organization. In the present study, 3D microtissues formed by MCF-7 breast cancer cells were exposed to the model EDCs estradiol (E2) and propyl pyrazole triol (PPT). A 3D imaging and image analysis pipeline was established to extract quantitative image features from estrogen-exposed microtissues. Moreover, a machine-learning classification model was built using estrogenic-associated differential imaging features. Based on 140 common differential image features found between the E2 and PPT group, the classification model predicted E2 and PPT exposure with AUC-ROC at 0.9528 and 0.9513, respectively. Deep learning-assisted analysis software was developed to characterize microtissue gland lumen formation. The fully automated tool can accurately characterize the number of identified lumens and the total luminal volume of each microtissue. Overall, the current study established an integrated approach by combining non-supervised image feature profiling and supervised luminal volume characterization, which reflected the complexity of functional ER signaling and highlighted a promising conceptual framework for estrogenic EDC risk assessment. The freshness of vegetable soybean (VS) is an important indicator for quality evaluation. Currently, deep learning-based image recognition technology provides a fast, efficient, and low-cost method for analyzing the freshness of food. The RGB (red, green, and blue) image recognition technology is widely used in the study of food appearance evaluation. In addition, the hyperspectral image has outstanding performance in predicting the nutrient content of samples. However, there are few reports on the research of classification models based on the fusion data of these two sources of images. We collected RGB and hyperspectral images at four different storage times of VS. The ENVI software was adopted to extract the hyperspectral information, and the RGB images were reconstructed based on the downsampling technology. Then, the one-dimensional hyperspectral data was transformed into a two-dimensional space, which allows it to be overlaid and concatenated with the RGB image data in the channel direction, thereby generating fused data. Compared with four commonly used machine learning models, the deep learning model ResNet18 has higher classification accuracy and computational efficiency. Based on the above results, a novel classification model named ResNet-R &H, which is based on the residual networks (ResNet) structure and incorporates the fusion data of RGB and hyperspectral images, was proposed. The ResNet-R &H can achieve a testing accuracy of 97.6%, which demonstrates a significant enhancement of 4.0% and 7.2% compared to the distinct utilization of hyperspectral data and RGB data, respectively. Overall, this research is significant in providing a unique, efficient, and more accurate classification approach in evaluating the freshness of vegetable soybean. The method proposed in this study can provide a theoretical reference for classifying the freshness of fruits and vegetables to improve classification accuracy and reduce human error and variability. Polyps are well-known cancer precursors identified by colonoscopy. However, variability in their size, appearance, and location makes the detection of polyps challenging. Moreover, colonoscopy surveillance and removal of polyps are highly operator-dependent procedures and occur in a highly complex organ topology. There exists a high missed detection rate and incomplete removal of colonic polyps. To assist in clinical procedures and reduce missed rates, automated methods for detecting and segmenting polyps using machine learning have been achieved in past years. However, the major drawback in most of these methods is their ability to generalise to out-of-sample unseen datasets from different centres, populations, modalities, and acquisition systems. To test this hypothesis rigorously, we, together with expert gastroenterologists, curated a multi-centre and multi-population dataset acquired from six different colonoscopy systems and challenged the computational expert teams to develop robust automated detection and segmentation methods in a crowd-sourcing Endoscopic computer vision challenge. This work put forward rigorous generalisability tests and assesses the usability of devised deep learning methods in dynamic and actual clinical colonoscopy procedures. We analyse the results of four top performing teams for the detection task and five top performing teams for the segmentation task. Our analyses demonstrate that the top-ranking teams concentrated mainly on accuracy over the real-time performance required for clinical applicability. We further dissect the devised methods and provide an experiment-based hypothesis that reveals the need for improved generalisability to tackle diversity present in multi-centre datasets and routine clinical procedures. The COVID-19 influenza emerged and proved to be fatal, causing millions of deaths worldwide. Vaccines were eventually discovered, effectively preventing the severe symptoms caused by the disease. However, some of the population (elderly and patients with comorbidities) are still vulnerable to severe symptoms such as breathlessness and chest pain. Identifying these patients in advance is imperative to prevent a bad prognosis. Hence, machine learning and deep learning algorithms have been used for early COVID-19 severity prediction using clinical and laboratory markers. The COVID-19 data was collected from two Manipal hospitals after obtaining ethical clearance. Multiple nature-inspired feature selection algorithms are used to choose the most crucial markers. A maximum testing accuracy of 95% was achieved by the classifiers. The predictions obtained by the classifiers have been demystified using five explainable artificial intelligence techniques (XAI). According to XAI, the most important markers are c-reactive protein, basophils, lymphocytes, albumin, D-Dimer and neutrophils. The models could be deployed in various healthcare facilities to predict COVID-19 severity in advance so that appropriate treatments could be provided to mitigate a severe prognosis. Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is the standard surgical approach to detect lymph node metastasis in breast cancer. Machine learning is a novel tool that provides better accuracy for predicting positive SLN involvement in breast cancer patients. This study obtained data from 2890 surgical cases of breast cancer patients from two referral hospitals in Iran from 2000 to 2021. Patients whose SLN involvement status was identified were included in our study. The dataset consisted of preoperative features, including patient features, gestational factors, laboratory data, and tumoral features. In this study, TabNet, an end-to-end deep learning model, was proposed to predict SLN involvement in breast cancer patients. We compared the accuracy of our model with results from logistic regression analysis. A total of 1832 patients with an average age of 51 ± 12 years were included in our study, of which 697 (25.5%) had SLN involvement. On average, the TabNet model achieved an accuracy of 75%, precision of 81%, specificity of 70%, sensitivity of 87%, and AUC of 0.74, while the logistic model demonstrated an accuracy of 70%, precision of 73%, specificity of 65%, sensitivity of 79%, F1 score of 73%, and AUC of 0.70 in predicting the SLN involvement in patients. Vascular invasion, tumor size, core needle biopsy pathology, age, and FH had the most contributions to the TabNet model. The TabNet model outperformed the logistic regression model in all metrics, indicating that it is more effective in predicting SLN involvement in breast cancer patients based on preoperative data.
