In this study, four novel bacterial strains, USB13T, AW1T, GTP1T, and HM2T, were isolated from various environments in Busan and Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. The 16S rRNA sequencing results indicated that the four novel strains belong to the genus Ramlibacter. All four strains were tested for their potential cellulolytic properties, where strain USB13T was identified as the only novel bacterium and the first within its genus to show cellulolytic activity. When tested, the highest activities of endoglucanase, exoglucanase, β-glucosidase, and filter paper cellulase (FPCase) were 1.91 IU/mL, 1.77 IU/mL, 0.76 IU/mL, and 1.12 IU/mL, respectively at pH 6.0. Comparisons of draft whole genome sequences (WGS) were also made using average nucleotide identity, digital DNA-DNA hybridization values, and average amino acid identity values, while whole genome comparison was visualized using the BLAST Ring Image Generator. The G + C contents of the strains ranged from 67.9 to 69.9%, while genome sizes ranged from 4.31 to 6.15 Mbp. Based on polyphasic evidence, the novel strains represent four new species within the genus Ramlibacter, for which the names Ramlibacter cellulosilyticus sp. nov. (type strain, USB13T = KACC 21656T = NBRC 114839T) Ramlibacter aurantiacus sp. nov. (type strain, AW1T = KACC 21544T = NBRC 114862T), Ramlibacter albus sp. nov. Patients with weak or no symptoms accelerate the spread of COVID-19 through various mutations and require more aggressive and active means of validating the COVID-19 infection. More than 30% of patients are reported as asymptomatic infection after the delta mutation spread in Korea. It means that there is a need for a means to more actively and accurately validate the infection of the epidemic via pre-symptomatic detection, besides confirming the infection via the symptoms. Mishara et al. (Nat Biomed Eng 4, 1208–1220, 2020) reported that physiological data collected from smartwatches could be an indicator to suspect COVID-19 infection. It shows that it is possible to identify an abnormal state suspected of COVID-19 by applying an anomaly detection method for the smartwatch's physiological data and identifying the subject's abnormal state to be observed. This paper proposes to apply the One Class-Support Vector Machine (OC-SVM) for pre-symptomatic COVID-19 detection. We show that OC-SVM can provide better performance than the Mahalanobis distance-based method used by Mishara et al. (Nat Biomed Eng 4, 1208–1220, 2020) in three aspects: earlier (23.5–40% earlier) and more detection (13.2–19.1% relative better) and fewer false positives. As a result, we could conclude that OC-SVM using Resting Heart Rate (RHR) with 350 and 300 moving average size is the most recommended technique for COVID-19 pre-symptomatic detection based on physiological data from the smartwatch. To model the COVID-19 infection and develop effective control measures, this paper proposes an SEIR-type epidemic model considering the impact of face-mask wearing and vaccination. Firstly, the effective reproduction number and the threshold conditions are obtained. Secondly, based on the data of South Korea from January 20, 2022 to March 21, 2022, the model parameters are estimated. Finally, a sensitivity analysis and the numerical study are conducted. The results show that the face-mask wearing is associated with 83 % and 90 % reductions in the numbers of cumulative cases and newly confirmed cases, respectively, after a period of 60 days, when the face mask wearing rate increases by 15 % . Furthermore, the vaccination rate is associated with 75 % and 80 % reductions in the numbers of cumulative cases and the newly confirmed cases, respectively, after the same period of 60 days when the vaccination rate is increased by 15 % . A combined measure involving face-mask wearing and vaccination may be more effective and reasonable in preventing and controlling this infection. It is also suggested that disease control departments should strongly recommended the wearing of face masks s as well as vaccination to prevent the unvaccinated people from becoming infected. We open an avenue for discussing how we can pave the way for compliance with existing regulations is a far-reaching factor for settling nuclear fusion technology. Based on a model of the Korean Fusion Demonstration Reactor (K-DEMO) with a target fusion power of 2.2 GW, we assess the intrinsic safety determinants of internal energy sources, the expected radioactive waste, and the tritium management. Regarding these safety factors, we scrutinize the compatibility of the current legislative environment in Korea with K-DEMO and envisage foreseeable obstacles, such as licensing of the nuclear facilities and acceptability of the radioactive waste. Based on precedent licenses for the Korean Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) and lessons learned from the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), we examine hazardous factors that would threaten regulatory compliance of K-DEMO. This approach can help shape a fusion-compatible framework for consolidating the necessary technical provisions and regulatory baselines reflecting social acceptance with a sense of safety. Fusion-compatible aspects in the regulatory environment are discussed, from fusion philosophy to subordinate administrative and technical guidelines, facility classification, and detailed methods guaranteeing integrity and safety. Interspecific hybridization has been suggested to occur frequently in Rumex (Polygonaceae). Several hypothesized combinations of parental species of hybrids based on their intermediate morphology have been suggested in the genus, but few of them have been phylogenetically tested. We analyzed nuclear and chloroplast DNA sequence data of a putative natural hybrid between Rumex crispus and Rumex obtusifolius from Korea to confirm its hybrid status and to determine the maternal parent. Analysis of the nuclear DNA pgiC region revealed that R. crispus and R. obtusifolius have contributed to the nuclear genome of the putative hybrids. The haplotype distribution pattern inferred from the combined sequence data set of five chloroplast DNA regions (matK, rbcL-accD IGS, trnK-rps16 IGS, ycf6-psbM IGS and psbA-trnH IGS) indicated bidirectional hybridization events between R. crispus and R. obtusifolius. This paper provides the first molecular evidence for interspecific hybridization between R. crispus and R. obtusifolius. In addition, our findings strongly suggested that Korean populations of Rumex japonicus have a hybrid origin, and R. crispus may represent one of the parental taxa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Early forecasting of COVID-19 virus spread is crucial to decision making on lockdown or closure of cities, states or countries. In this paper we design a recursive bifurcation model for analyzing COVID-19 virus spread in different countries. The bifurcation facilitates recursive processing of infected population through linear least-squares fitting. In addition, a nonlinear least-squares fitting procedure is utilized to predict the future values of infected populations. Numerical results on the data from two countries (South Korea and Germany) indicate the effectiveness of our approach, compared to a logistic growth model and a Richards model in the context of early forecast. Apis mellifera filamentous virus (AmFV) is a double-stranded DNA virus that infects Apis mellifera bees. To our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive study aiming to detect and analyse the genetic diversity and prevalence of AmFV in Korean honeybee colonies. Phylogenetic analysis based on baculovirus repeat open reading frame–N gene (Bro–N) sequences revealed that AmFV isolates from the Republic of Korea (ROK) fell into two distinct lineages, with genetic origins in Switzerland and China, with nucleotide similarities of 98.3% and 98.2%, respectively. Our prevalence analysis demonstrated a noteworthy infection rate of AmFV in 545 honeybee colonies, reaching 33.09% in 2022 and increasing to 44.90% by 2023. Intriguingly, we also detected AmFV in Varroa destructor mites, highlighting their potential role as vectors and carriers of AmFV. The presence of AmFV was correlated with an increased infection rate of sacbrood virus, deformed wing virus, Lake Sinai virus 2, black queen cell virus, and Nosema ceranae in honeybee colonies. These findings provide valuable insight into the prevalence and potential transmission mechanisms of AmFV in honeybee colonies in the ROK. The spread of American Bullfrog has a significant impact on the surrounding ecosystem. It is important to study the mechanisms of their spreading so that proper mitigation can be applied when needed. This study analyzes data from national surveys on bullfrog distribution. We divided the data into 25 regional clusters. To assess the spread within each cluster, we constructed temporal sequences of spatial distribution using the agglomerative clustering method. We employed Elementary Cellular Automata (ECA) to identify rules governing the changes in spatial patterns. Each cell in the ECA grid represents either the presence or absence of bullfrogs based on observations. For each cluster, we counted the number of presence location in the sequence to quantify spreading intensity. We used a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to learn the ECA rules and predict future spreading intensity by estimating the expected number of presence locations over 400 simulated generations. We incorporated environmental factors by obtaining habitat suitability maps using Maxent. We multiplied spreading intensity by habitat suitability to create an overall assessment of bullfrog invasion risk. Abies koreana E.H.Wilson is an endangered evergreen coniferous tree that is native to high altitudes in South Korea and susceptible to the effects of climate change. Hybridization and reticulate evolution have been reported in the genus; therefore, multigene datasets from nuclear and cytoplasmic genomes are needed to better understand its evolutionary history. Using the Illumina NovaSeq 6000 and Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) PromethION platforms, we generated complete mitochondrial (1,174,803 bp) and plastid (121,341 bp) genomes from A. koreana. The mitochondrial genome is highly dynamic, transitioning from cis- to trans-splicing and breaking conserved gene clusters. In the plastome, the ONT reads revealed two structural conformations of A. koreana. The short inverted repeats (1186 bp) of the A. koreana plastome are associated with different structural types. Transcriptomic sequencing revealed 1356 sites of C-to-U RNA editing in the 41 mitochondrial genes. Using A. koreana as a reference, we additionally produced nuclear and organelle genomic sequences from eight Abies species and generated multiple datasets for maximum likelihood and network analyses. Three sections (Balsamea, Momi, and Pseudopicea) were well grouped in the nuclear phylogeny, but the phylogenomic relationships showed conflicting signals in the mitochondrial and plastid genomes, indicating a complicated evolutionary history that may have included introgressive hybridization. The obtained data illustrate that phylogenomic analyses based on sequences from differently inherited organelle genomes have resulted in conflicting trees. Organelle capture, organelle genome recombination, and incomplete lineage sorting in an ancestral heteroplasmic individual can contribute to phylogenomic discordance. This study investigated the risk of heatwaves for people with disabilities and other socioeconomic attributes using Health Care Bigdata in South Korea. The Health Care Bigdata provides detailed information on heat-related illness (HRI) patients in 2011–2020 from seven major cities. We employed the Distributed Lag Nonlinear Model (DLNM) to measure heat waves' relative risk. Our findings are four-fold. First, the relative risk (RR) of disabled people was 5.075 (95% confidence interval 4.476–5.674), significantly surpassing that of non-disabled people, 3.296 (2.517–4.075). Second, among various personal characteristics studied, disability influenced RR the most, exceeding impacts from elderly (4.457: 3.748–5.166), low-income (3.909: 3.004–4.813), and outdoor (4.052: 2.940–5.164). Third, the disabled young group (5.305: 4.414–6.195) was more vulnerable than the non-disabled elderly group (4.287: 3.576–4.999). Lastly, no significant difference in relative risk was observed between the mild (4.413: 3.855–4.971) and severe disabled groups (4.013: 3.121–4.905). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to create Greenhouse Gas - Air Pollution Interactions and Synergies (GAINS)-Korea, an integrated model for evaluating climate and air quality policies in Korea, modeled after the international GAINS model. GAINS-Korea incorporates specific Korean data and enhances granularity for enabling local government-level analysis. The model includes source-receptor matrices used to simulate pollutant dispersion in Korea, generated through CAMx air quality modeling. GAINS-Korea's performance was evaluated by examining different scenarios for South Korea. The business as usual scenario projected emissions from 2010 to 2030, while the air quality scenario included policies to reduce air pollutants in line with air quality and greenhouse gas control plans. The maximum feasible reduction scenario incorporated more aggressive reduction technologies along with air quality measures. The developed model enabled the assessment of emission reduction effects by both greenhouse gas and air pollutant emission reduction policies across 17 local governments in Korea, including changes in PM2.5 (particulate matter less than 2.5 μm) concentration and associated benefits, such as reduced premature deaths. The model also provides a range of visualization tools for comparative analysis among different scenarios, making it a valuable resource for policy planning and evaluation, and supporting decision-making processes. We propose a method for detecting earthquakes for high-speed trains based on unsupervised anomaly-detection techniques. In particular, we utilized autoencoder-based deep learning models for unsupervised learning using only normal training vibration data. Datasets were generated from South Korean high-speed train data, and seismic data were measured using seismometers nationwide. The proposed method is compared with the conventional Short Time Average over Long Time Average (STA/LTA) model, considering earthquake detection capabilities, focusing on a Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) threshold of 0.07, a criterion for track derailment. The results show that the proposed model exhibit improved earthquake detection capabilities than STA/LTA for PGA of 0.07 or higher. Furthermore, the proposed model reduced false earthquake detections under normal operating conditions and accurately identified normal states. In contrast, the STA/LTA method demonstrated a high rate of false earthquake detection under normal operating conditions, underscoring its propensity for inaccurate detection in many instances. The proposed approach shows promising performance even in situations with limited seismic data and offers a viable solution for earthquake detection in regions with relatively few seismic events. Bicycles are an eco-friendly mode of transportation, and in the capital city of South Korea, Seoul, efforts are being made to encourage citizens to use bicycles. However, without appropriate safety measures, these efforts can lead to an increase in bicycle-related traffic accidents. To promote bicycle usage while ensuring safety, this study identified various factors that influence bicycle accidents. Data were utilized that had not been properly considered in previous bicycle accident-related studies, including slope and the level of public transportation services. By considering the factors influencing bicycle traffic accidents, various models were constructed, and through comparisons of statistical indicators, the optimal model was selected geographically weighted negative binomial regression. Ultimately, three significant conclusions to ensure bicycle safety were drawn. First, across all areas of Seoul, an increase in road slope leads to a decrease in bicycle-related accidents. Furthermore, for certain Traffic Analysis Zones (TAZs), as the number of local buses (or neighborhood/community buses) increases, the bicycle traffic volume decreases, resulting in a reduction in bicycle accidents. Genetic, environment, and behaviour factors have a role in causing sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). We aimed to determine the strength of the association between various risk factors and SCA incidence. We conducted a multicentre case-control study at 17 hospitals in Korea from September 2017 to December 2020. The cases included out-of-hospital cardiac arrest aged 19–79 years with presumed cardiac aetiology. Community-based controls were recruited at a 1:1 ratio after matching for age, sex, and urban residence level. Multivariable conditional logistic regression analysis was conducted. Among the 1016 cases and 1731 controls, 948 cases and 948 controls were analysed. A parental history of SCA, low educational level, own heart disease, current smoking, and non-regular exercise were associated with SCA incidence (Adjusted odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 2.51 [1.48–4.28] for parental history of SCA, 1.37 [1.38–2.25] for low edication level, 3.77 [2.38–5.90] for non-coronary artery heart disease, 4.47 [2.84–7.03] for coronary artery disease, 1.39 [1.08–1.79] for current smoking, and 4.06 [3.29–5.02] for non-regular exercise). Various risk factors related to genetics, environment, and behaviour were independently associated with the incidence of SCA. The surge in social network services (SNS) usage has ignited concerns about potential addictive behaviors stemming from excessive engagement. This research focuses on pinpointing the primary determinants of SNS addiction by introducing a theoretical framework centered on flow, perceived enjoyment, and habit. A sample of 282 SNS users from South Korea was surveyed, and the gathered data was assessed through partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The evaluation revealed that positive affect closely relates to flow and perceived enjoyment, whereas negative affect amplifies flow but diminishes perceived enjoyment. Additionally, the research underscored that social influence significantly shapes habits and affects perceived enjoyment. Notably, flow demonstrated a strong connection to addiction, and perceived enjoyment influenced both flow and habit significantly. Habit was directly linked to addiction. The sustainability of human societies is contingent upon our ability to accurately predict the effects of future climate change on the global environment and humanity. Wise responses to forthcoming environmental alterations require extensive knowledge from historical precedents. However, in coastal East Asia, a region with a long history of agriculture, it is challenging to obtain paleoenvironmental proxy data without anthropogenic disturbances that can be used to assess the impact of late Holocene climate change on local communities. This study introduces a high-resolution multi-proxy sedimentary record from an isolated crater in Jeju Island, Korea, to elucidate the mechanisms underlying mid-to-late Holocene climate change and its impacts on ancient societies. Our findings suggest that hydroclimate changes were predominantly governed by sea surface temperature fluctuations in the western tropical Pacific, with low-frequency variability in solar activity and a decrease in summer insolation identified as primary drivers of temperature change. Moreover, ancient societies on the Korean peninsula were significantly affected by recurring cooling events, including the 2.8 ka event, 2.3 ka event, Late Antique Little Ice Age, maunder minimum, and others. Extracranial vascular malformations are abnormal formations of blood vessels located outside the brain (extracranial) that develop during fetal development. They are caused by errors in the formation of blood vessels in the embryo and can affect various parts of the body, such as the head, neck, face, and other regions. Some malformations may be asymptomatic and only require monitoring, while others may cause significant health issues or cosmetic concerns and may need medical intervention. There are very few studies have investigated the nationwide incidence and quantitative mortality of vascular malformations in terms of their subtypes. Thus, this study aimed to determine the nationwide incidence and mortality associated with vascular malformations. This nationwide population-based study evaluated 70,517 patients with vascular malformations from 2008 to 2021. We evaluated the incidence and mortality associated with each subtype of vascular malformation. Furthermore, Cox regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between vascular malformation and mortality. The annual incidence (per 100,000 population) of overall vascular, venous, capillary, arteriovenous, and lymphatic malformations was 9.85, 1.48, 2.31, 0.24, and 5.82 cases, respectively. Patients with vascular malformations, except those with venous malformations, had higher mortality than the matched controls. Moreover, among the vascular malformation subgroups, the adjusted hazard ratio of mortality was the highest for arteriovenous malformations. This study revealed that the overall annual incidence of vascular malformations was 9.85 cases per 100,000 population in Korea from 2008 to 2021. The mortality of the matched general population was lower than that of patients with vascular malformations, except for those with venous malformations. The COVID-19 pandemic has swept the globe, and countries have responded with various intervention policies to prevent its spread. In this study, we aim to analyze the effectiveness of intervention policies implemented in South Korea. We use a stochastic individual-based model (IBM) with a synthetic population to simulate the spread of COVID-19. Using statistical data, we make the synthetic population and assign sociodemographic attributes to each individual. Individuals go about their daily lives based on their assigned characteristics, and encountering infectors in their daily lives stochastically determines whether they are infected. We reproduce the transmission of COVID-19 using the IBM simulation from November 2020 to February 2021 when three phases of increasingly stringent intervention policies were implemented, and then assess their effectiveness. Additionally, we predict how the spread of infection would have been different if these policies had been implemented in January 2022. This study offers valuable insights into the effectiveness of intervention policies in South Korea, which can assist policymakers and public health officials in their decision-making process. Abies nephrolepis (Trautv. ex Maxim.) Maxim. has its southernmost populations in South Korea and they are expected to decline under climate change. To establish a strategic conservation plan, this study aimed to investigate the spatial genetic structure and seed characteristics of A. nephrolepis. We used nine microsatellite markers on 165 individuals of A. nephrolepis and sampled seeds in a southernmost population at Mt. Hambaeksan, South Korea. We observed a high level of heterozygosity, and a simulation study found that sampling 20 individuals was enough to secure sufficient genetic diversity on average. Spatial autocorrelation analysis revealed that individuals had a positive genetic relationship until 30 m. Bayesian clustering models, STRUCTURE and GENELAND, failed to achieve a consensus in the optimal number of population (K), estimating K = 1 and K = 2, respectively. Principal coordinate analysis supported the absence of genetic substructure within the study population. There was a large variance in seed production among mother trees. On average, seeds of A. nephrolepis from Mt. Hambaeksan had a purity of 70.4% and a germination percentage of 32.2%. We found that seed weight was the most effective indicator of seed quality. Mother trees at higher altitudes had poorer purity which is threatening to A. nephrolepis considering the upslope retreat of subalpine species under climate change. Anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) is currently the most widely prescribed induction regimen for preventing acute rejection after solid organ transplantation. However, the optimal dose of ATG induction regimen in Asian kidney recipients is unclear. Using the Korean Organ Transplantation Registry, we performed a retrospective cohort study of 4579 adult patients who received renal transplantation in South Korea and divided them into three groups according to the induction regimen: basiliximab group (n = 3655), low-dose ATG group (≤ 4.5 mg/kg; n = 467), and high-dose ATG group (> 4.5 mg/kg; n = 457). We applied the Toolkit for Weighting and Analysis of Nonequivalent Groups (TWANG) package to generate high-quality propensity score weights for intergroup comparisons. During four-year follow-ups, the high-dose ATG group had the highest biopsy-proven acute rejection rate (basiliximab 20.8% vs. low-dose ATG 22.4% vs. high-dose ATG 25.6%; P < 0.001). However, the rates of overall graft failure (4.0% vs. 5.0% vs. 2.6%; P < 0.001) and mortality (1.7% vs. 2.8% vs. 1.0%; P < 0.001) were the lowest in the high-dose ATG group. Our results show that high-dose ATG induction (> 4.5 mg/kg) was superior to basiliximab and low-dose ATG induction in terms of graft and patient survival in Asian patients undergoing kidney transplant. To compare pregnancy rates and complications in women with and without a history of optic neuritis (ON). A nationwide, population-based, retrospective study using data from the Korean National Health Claims from January 2011, to December 2017 was done. ON cohort (ON group) consisting of women aged 18 to 50 with a history of ON and 1:3 age-matched controls (control group) were compared for pregnancy and delivery rates using logistic regression after adjusting for possible confounders. Pregnancy-ON cohort (pregnancy-ON group), women aged 18 to 55 with a history of ON and pregnancy, and 1:3 age at pregnancy matched controls (pregnancy-control group) were analyzed for pregnancy complications using logistic regression after adjusting for covariates. ON group (n = 2516) showed decreased odds ratio (OR) for pregnancy [Adjusted OR2: 0.716, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.626–0.820] and delivery (adjusted OR2: 0.647, 95% CI: 0.554–0.756) compared to controls (n = 7548). Pregnancy-ON group (n = 550) showed increased risk of delayed fetal growth (adjusted OR2: 9.867, 95% CI: 1.224–79.564), pre-eclampsia (adjusted OR2: 8.327, 95% CI: 2.911–23.819), preterm delivery (adjusted OR2: 3.914, 95% CI: 2.667–5.742), pregnancy and postpartum infection (adjusted OR1: 1.671, 95% CI: 1.296–2.154), diabetes in pregnancy (adjusted OR2: 1.365, 95% CI: 1.062–1.754) compared to pregnancy-control group (n = 1650). Numerous environmental factors that influence myopia have been studied, but only few factors have been definitively identified. We examined factors influencing myopia using data from 2014 to 2020 physical examinations received from the Korean Military Manpower Administration. We used the Cochran–Armitage trend test to investigate the annual prevalence of myopia and high myopia. To determine risk factors for myopia, logistic regression was performed. The data of 2,215,126 19-year-old Korean men were examined. The myopia and high myopia prevalences showed significant annual increases; in 2020, these prevalences were 58.9% and 18.0%, respectively. The myopia prevalence was high when the birth season was spring, education level was high, height was small, weight and body mass index (BMI) were low (< 18.5 kg/m2), and color vision was normal (all, p < 0.05). The high myopia prevalence was high when the birth season was spring, education level was high, height was tall, weight and BMI were low (< 18.5 kg/m2), and color vision was normal (all, p < 0.05). A total of 187 lactic acid bacteria were isolated from four types of grains collected in South Korea. The bacterial strains were assigned as members of Levilactobacillus brevis, Latilactobacillus curvatus, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, Lactococcus taiwanensis, Pediococcus pentosaceus, and Weissella paramesenteroides based on the closest similarity using 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The strains belonging to the same species were analyzed using RAPD-PCR, and one or two among strains showing the same band pattern were selected. Finally, 25 representative strains were selected for further functional study. Inhibitory effects of lipid accumulation were observed in the strains tested. Pediococcus pentosaceus K28, Levilactobacillus brevis RP21 and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum RP12 significantly reduced lipid accumulation and did not show cytotoxicity in C3H10T1/2 cells at treatment of 1–200 μg/mL. The three LAB strains decreased significantly expression of six adipogenic marker genes, PPARγ, C/EBPα, CD36, LPL, FAS and ACC, in C3H10T1/2 adipocytes. The three strains survived under strong acidity and bile salt conditions. The three strains showed adhesion to Caco-2 cells similar to a reference strain LGG. The resistance of the three strains to several antibiotics was also assessed. Strains RP12 and K28 were confirmed not to produce harmful enzymes based on API ZYM kit results. Based on these results, strains K28, RP21 and RP12 isolated from grains had the ability to inhibit adipogenesis in adipocytes and potentially be useful as probiotics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a new example of the termination of strike-slip paleoearthquake ruptures in near-surface regions on the Yangsan Fault, Korea, based on multi-scale structural observations. Paleoearthquake ruptures occur mostly along the boundary between the inherited fault core and damage zone (N10–20°E/> 75°SE). The ruptures propagated upward to the shallow subsurface along a < 3-cm-wide specific slip zone with dextral-slip sense, along which the deformation mechanism is characterized mainly by granular flow in near-surface region. The ruptures either reach the surface or are terminated in unconsolidated sediment below the surface. In the latter case, the rupture splays show westward bifurcation, and their geometry and kinematics show a change to NNW-strike with low-angle dip and dextral-reverse oblique-slip sense in the strata. We suggest that the upward termination of the contractional strike-slip ruptures is controlled by the inherited fault geometry that is unfavorable with respect to the stress field (ENE–WSW σHmax) at basement depths in terms of movement on the fault, and the lack of extension of the fault into shallow subsurface; a depth-dependent change in stress from σHmax > σv > σHmin to σHmax > σHmin > σv at depth of a ~ 200 m; and the physical properties of unconsolidated sediment, which have low inter-granular cohesion, resulting in distributed deformation. Microbiota in the mosquito plays an important role in their behavior and vector competence. The composition of their microbiome is strongly influenced by the environment, especially their habitat. The microbiome profiles of adult female Anopheles sinensis mosquitoes from malaria hyperendemic and hypoendemic areas in Republic of Korea were compared using 16S rRNA Illumina sequencing. In different epidemiology groups, the alpha and beta diversity analyses were significant. The major bacterial phylum was Proteobacteria. The most abundant species in the microbiome of hyperendemic mosquitoes were the genera Staphylococcus, Erwinia, Serratia, and Pantoea. Notably, a distinct microbiome profile characterized by the dominance of Pseudomonas synxantha was identified in the hypoendemic area, suggesting a potential correlation between the microbiome profiles and the incidence of malaria cases. The association between ulcerative colitis (UC) and uterine cervical cancer is still unclear. To investigate cervical cancer risk in South Korean women with UC, we analyzed the Korean National Health Insurance claims data. UC was defined using both ICD-10 codes and UC-specific prescriptions. We analyzed incident cases of UC diagnosed between 2006 and 2015. Age-matched women without UC (control group) were randomly selected from the general population (1:3 ratio). Hazard ratios were calculated using multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression, and the event was defined as occurrence of cervical cancer. A total of 12,632 women with UC and 36,797 women without UC were enrolled. The incidence of cervical cancer was 38.8 per 100,000 women per year in UC patients and 25.7 per 100,000 women per year in controls, respectively. The adjusted HR for cervical cancer was 1.56 (95% CI 0.97–2.50) in the UC group with reference to the control group. When stratified by age, the adjusted HR for cervical cancer was 3.65 (95% CI 1.54–8.66) in elderly UC patients (≥ 60 years) compared to elderly control group (≥ 60 years). Within UC patients, increased age (≥ 40 years) and low socioeconomic status were associated with an increased risk of cervical cancer. The incidence of cervical cancer was found to be higher among elderly patients (≥ 60 years) with newly diagnosed UC in South Korea, compared to age-matched controls. Korean water deer (Hydropotes inermis argyropus; Heude, 1884) and Siberian roe deer (Capreolus pygargus; Pallas, 1771) are Korean wild deer classified in the tribe Capreolini. C. pygargus in Korea were previously considered a single species; however, it was recently suggested that roe deer living on Jeju Island (Jeju roe deer; Capreolus pygargus jejuensis) is a distinct subspecies from roe deer living on the Korean peninsula (mainland roe deer; Capreolus pygargus tianschanicus) based on several studies demonstrating genetic and morphological features. In this study, we suggests that the scapular morphology and osteometric data can be used for interspecies discrmination between Korean wild deer. To compare the morphological characteristics of scapula among the three groups of deer, we analyzed the features and nine osteomorphological measurements of 31 H. i. argyropus (14 males and 17 females), 18 C. p. jejuensis (4 males and 14 females), and 23 C. p. tianschanicus (16 females and 7 males). The estimated ages of the deer were over 32–35 months. Data were analyzed by one-way repeated measures analysis of variance with post hoc Duncan test and discriminant functional analysis (DFA). H. i. argyropus and C. p. tianschanicus had the smallest and largest scapulae, respectively. The scapulae of the three Korean wild deer had a similar triangular shape, which was obscured by the tuber of the scapular spine, pointed acromion, broad infraspinous fossa, narrow supraspinous fossa, and partial ossification of scapular cartilage in older deer. H. i. argyropus had certain distinctive features, including a caudally pointed acromion, a notch between the supraglenoid tubercle and glenoid cavity (NBSG), a glenoid notch, and no sexual dimorphism, except for the longest dorsal length (Ld) and the scapular index (SI). C. p. jejuensis had a larger scapular index (SI) (61.74 ± 0.74%), compared with the SIs of H. i. argyropus and C. p. tianschanicus. The unique features of the scapula in C. p. jejuensis include its S-shaped cranial border. The C. p. jejuensis had a cranially pointed acromion, less frequent presence of glenoid notch and NBSG, short length of supraglenoid tubercle, and no sexual dimorphism. The C. p. tianschanicus had elevated cranial margin of the glenoid cavity, and frequent presence of glenoid notch and NBSG, similar to the H. i. argyropus. Similar to C. p. jejuensis, C. p. tianschanicus had a cranially pointed acromion. However, sexual dimorphism was observed in C. p. tianschanicus. DFA using osteometric data showed 97.22% of specimens were classified correctly into their species, meaning the osteometric parameters can be used for interspecies discrimination of Korean wild deer. Our findings indicate that the scapular morphologies of the three Korean wild deer have certain similarities and differences, suggesting that C. p. jejuensis are distinct from C. p. tianschanicus. The increase in fine dust levels in the atmosphere has been associated with a growth in the incidence of environmental diseases, including allergic rhinitis (AR). Nasal obstruction caused by AR can impact the conditions in the oral cavity. The aim of this study was to determine the association between AR and periodontitis in the Republic of Korea. This study was based on data from the Seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES VII-1, 2016), which was conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The study included 6129 adults older than 19 years. Sociodemographic information and medical variables including history of treatment of periodontitis (HTP) reflecting diagnosis of periodontitis and diagnosis of diseases such as AR were extracted from the data. HTP and AR were reported for 22.81 ± 0.84% (weighted percentage ± standard error) and 15.32 ± 0.63% of the studied population, respectively. A diagnosis of AR was reported for 11.07 ± 1.28% of those with HTP and for 17.55 ± 1.84% of those without HTP. From these, it was inferred that the prevalence of HTP was 1.536-fold higher in the non-AR group than in their counterparts with AR. Significant association was found between AR and HTP among those aged ≤ 64 years and the odds ratio (OR) of AR group for HTP was 0.62 (95% confidence interval:0.44–0.87; P = 0.0057). As the COVID-19 situation changes because of emerging variants and updated vaccines, an elaborate mathematical model is essential in crafting proactive and effective control strategies. We propose a COVID-19 mathematical model considering variants, booster shots, waning, and antiviral drugs. We quantify the effects of social distancing in the Republic of Korea by estimating the reduction in transmission induced by government policies from February 26, 2021 to February 3, 2022. Simulations show that the next epidemic peak can be estimated by investigating the effects of waning immunity. This research emphasizes that booster vaccination should be administered right before the next epidemic wave, which follows the increasing waned population. Policymakers are recommended to monitor the waning population immunity using mathematical models or other predictive methods. Optimal preparation is recommended for patients with advanced chronic kidney disease to minimize complications during dialysis initiation. This study evaluated the effects of planned dialysis initiation on survival in patients undergoing incident hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Patients newly diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease who started dialysis were enrolled in a multicenter prospective cohort study in Korea. Planned dialysis was defined as dialysis therapy initiated with permanent access and maintenance of the initial dialysis modality. A total of 2892 patients were followed up for a mean duration of 71.9 ± 36.7 months and 1280 (44.3%) patients initiated planned dialysis. The planned dialysis group showed lower mortality than the unplanned dialysis group during the 1st and 2nd years after dialysis initiation (1st year: adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 0.51; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.37–0.72; P < 0.001; 2nd year: aHR 0.71; 95% CI 0.52–0.98, P = 0.037). However, 2 years after dialysis initiation, mortality did not differ between the groups. Planned dialysis showed a better early survival rate in hemodialysis patients, but not in peritoneal dialysis patients. Particularly, infection-related mortality was reduced only in patients undergoing hemodialysis with planned dialysis initiation. Planned dialysis has survival benefits over unplanned dialysis in the first 2 years after dialysis initiation, especially in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Little is known about the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We aimed to investigate the long-term trends in CKD prevalence from South Korea including the early pandemic. We used data from 108,152 Korean adults from 2007 to 2020 obtained from a representative longitudinal serial study. We defined CKD as a condition when the participant's estimated glomerular filtration rate was < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2, or one-time spot proteinuria was ≥ 1 +, and then examined the overall trends in the prevalence of CKD. Among the included adults (n = 80,010), the overall national prevalence of CKD was 6.2%. The trend slope gradually increased from 2007 to 2019, however, there was a sudden decrease in 2020 (2007–2010, 5.1% [95% confidence interval (CI) 4.7–5.5]; 2017–2019, 7.1% [95% CI 6.6–7.6]; pandemic period, 6.5% [95% CI 5.7–7.3]; and βdiff, − 0.19; 95% CI − 0.24 to − 0.13). The prevalence of CKD among younger adults and those with poor medical utilization significantly decreased during the early pandemic. This study was the first large-scale study to investigate the longitudinal prevalence of CKD from 2007 to 2020. Carbon (C) sequestration capacity in forest ecosystems is generally constrained by soil nitrogen (N) availability. Consequently, N fertilization is seen as a promising tool for enhancing ecosystem-level C sequestration in N-limited forests. We examined the responses of ecosystem C (vegetation and soil) and soil N dynamics to 3 years of annual nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (N3P4K1 = 11.3 g N, 15.0 g P, 3.7 g K m−2 year−1) or PK fertilization (P4K1), observed over 4 years in a 40-year-old Pinus densiflora forest with poor N nutrition in South Korea. PK fertilization without N was performed to test for PK limitation other than N. Neither tree growth nor soil C fluxes responded to annual NPK or PK fertilization despite an increase in soil mineral N fluxes following NPK fertilization. NPK fertilization increased the rate of N immobilization and 80% of the added N was recovered from mineral soil in the 0–5 cm layer, suggesting that relatively little of the added N was available to trees. These results indicate that N fertilization does not always enhance C sequestration even in forests with poor N nutrition and should therefore be applied with caution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Burnout is a form of negative emotional and physical response to job stress. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of burnout among healthcare workers responding to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak in Korea and to explore correlates of burnout among healthcare workers. A nationwide questionnaire-based survey was conducted from December 1, 2020, to January 29, 2021 on 1425 healthcare workers who worked in one of the 16 healthcare facilities designated for COVID-19 care, in public health centers, or as paramedics in Korea. Burnout was assessed using 16 Korean-adapted items based on the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI). Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using the R version 4.1.1 software program. OLBI results indicate clinically exhaustion in 84.5% (1204/1425) and clinically disengagement in 91.1% (1298/1425), and 77.3% (1102/1425) met the score criteria for both the exhaustion and disengagement subscales for burnout. Burnout rate was significantly increased in the group with chronic fatigue symptoms (Fatigue Severity Scale ≥ 3.22) after the outbreak of COVID-19 (OR, 3.94; 95% CI 2.80–5.56), in the female group (OR, 2.05; 95% CI 1.46–2.86), in the group with physical symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-15 ≥ 10) after the outbreak of COVID-19 (OR, 2.03; 95% CI 1.14–3.60), in the group with a higher Global Assessment of Recent Stress scale (OR, 1.71; 95% CI 1.46–2.01), in the group with post-traumatic stress symptoms (Primary Care Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder-5 ≥ 2) (OR, 1.47; 95% CI 1.08–2.01), and in the younger age group(OR, 1.45; 95% CI 1.22–1.72). The chronic fatigue symptoms were correlated with cumulative days of care (OR, 1.18; 95% CI 1.02–1.37). The physical symptoms were correlated with average contact hours with COVID-19 patients per day (OR, 1.34; 95% CI 1.17–1.54), and cumulative days of care (OR, 1.21; 95% CI 1.06–1.38). Most Korean healthcare workers suffered from burnout related to excessive workload during the COVID-19 pandemic. Several guidelines classify autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) as a low to intermediate risk group for infection. In a nationwide population-based study, using the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service database, patients with lymphoma and multiple myeloma (MM) who underwent ASCT from 2002 to 2016 were retrospectively analyzed. Cumulative incidence rates (CIRs) and risk factors of opportunistic infections were investigated. CIRs of fungal, Varicella zoster virus (VZV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Pneumocystis jirovecii infections in lymphoma were 7.9%, 16.0%, 7.4%, and 5.1%, respectively, and CIRs in MM were 6.3%, 19.1%, 4.2%, and 5.6%, respectively. Fungal infection was significantly higher in patients with previous infection (Hazard ratio (HR) 2.003, p = 0.005) in lymphoma. Incidence of CMV infection was significantly higher in patients with prior CMV infection: HR 4.920, p < 0.001 (lymphoma); HR 3.022, p = 0.030 (MM). VZV infection was significantly lower in patients receiving prophylaxis: HR 0.082, p < 0.001 (lymphoma); HR 0.096, p < 0.001 (MM). For P. jirovecii infection, busulfex and melphalan conditioning (HR 1.875, p = 0.032) and previous P. jirovecii infection (HR 4.810, p < 0.001) had a higher incidence in MM. The Korean Intermittent Exotropia Multicenter Study (KIEMS) was a retrospective, cross-sectional and multicenter study for the investigation of intermittent exotropia involved 65 strabismus specialists from 53 institutions in Korea. Purpose of this study was to present ophthalmologic findings of intermittent exotropia from the KIEMS. Consecutive patients with intermittent exotropia of ≥ 8 prism diopters (PD) at distance or near fixation were included. Best-corrected visual acuity, cycloplegic refraction data, angles of deviation at several cardinal positions, ocular dominance, fusion control, oblique muscle function, and binocular sensory outcomes were collected. A total of 5385 participants (2793 females; age 8.2 years) were included. Non-dominant eye was more myopic than the dominant eye (− 0.60 vs. − 0.47 diopters, P < 0.001). Mean exodeviation angles were 23.5 PD at distance and 25.0 PD at near fixation. Basic type (86.2%) was the most, followed by convergence insufficiency (9.4%) and divergence excess (4.4%) types. Alternating ocular dominance and good fusion control were more common at near than at distance fixation. Good stereopsis at 40 cm was observed in 49.3% in Titmus stereo test (≤ 60 arcsec) and in 71.0% in Randot stereo test (≤ 63 arcsec). Intermittent exotropia was mostly diagnosed in childhood and patients with the condition showed relatively good binocular functions. This study may provide objective findings of intermittent exotropia in a most reliable way, given that the study included a large study population and investigated comprehensive ophthalmology examinations. This study compared the relative risks of heat days on mortalities by vulnerable groups (elderly, single-person households, less-educated) in the past decade (1999–2008) and the recent decade (2009–2018) in four cities, Seoul, Incheon, Daegu, and Gwangju, in Korea. It has been known that the health impacts of heatwaves have gradually decreased over time due to socio-economic development, climate adaptation, and acclimatization. Contrary to general perception, we found that the recent relative risk of mortality caused by heat days has increased among vulnerable groups. It may associate with recent increasing trends of severe heat days due to climate change. The increasing relative risk was more significant in single-person households and less-educated groups than in the elderly. It implies that the impacts of climate change-induced severe heat days have been and will be concentrated on vulnerable groups. It suggests that social polarization and social isolation should be addressed to reduce heatwave impacts. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a well-known risk factor for mortality, and the risk is exacerbated by coexisting diabetic kidney disease (DKD). We aimed to explore the impact of DM on each cause of mortality according to kidney function and the presence of albuminuria. Data on subjects with DM were extracted from the Nationwide Health Insurance Database of South Korea between 2009 and 2012. Subjects were divided by eGFR and albuminuria into five groups. To evaluate the risk of diabetes, we used the Cox proportional hazards model. A total of 2,614,662 patients were enrolled in this study. Most causes of death showed a higher incidence in an advanced stage of DKD. In addition to all-cause mortality and cardiovascular death, the risk of death from neoplasms and diseases of the endocrine, respiratory, and digestive systems is increased by albuminuria. The synergistic effect of a reduced eGFR and the presence of albuminuria was prominent in death from circulatory diseases, and endocrine and metabolic diseases. The risk for mortality was different according to the stage of DKD. While most living kidney donors experience good outcomes and high rates of satisfaction, kidney donation can increase the risk of gestational hypertension or preeclampsia. However, pregnancy outcomes in non-white donors are limited. We conducted a nationwide cohort study of 112 living kidney donors and 672 matched healthy non-donors using the Korean National Health Insurance Claims Database. Donors and healthy non-donors were matched according to age, year of cohort entry, residency, income, number of pregnancies, and the time to the first pregnancy after cohort entry. We assessed pregnancy outcomes of live kidney donors compared with matched healthy non-donors using the nationwide database. Gestational hypertension or preeclampsia was more common in kidney donors than in non-donors (8.9% vs. 1.8%; adjusted odds ratio, 2.68; 95% confidence interval, 1.11–6.50). However, the incidence of severe gestational hypertension or preeclampsia that required antihypertensive medication was comparable (2.7% vs. 0.9%; P = 0.121). The time from donation to delivery within 5 years and primiparity were risk factors for preeclampsia in donors. Low birth weight, stillbirth, and ectopic pregnancy were not significantly different between the two groups. Maternal death occurred in two non-donor cases, but none occurred in donors compared to non-donors. Our findings indicate that kidney donors are associated with an increased risk of gestational hypertension or preeclampsia than matched healthy non-donors. Microbes influence plant growth and fitness. However, the structure and function of microbiomes associated with rare and endemic plants remain underexplored. To investigate the bacterial community structure of Ulleung-sanmaneul (U-SMN), an endemic plant in Korea, samples were collected from natural and cultivated habitats, and their 16S rDNA was sequenced. The root bacterial community structure differed from those of bulk soil and rhizosphere in both habitats. Endogenous bacteria in cultivated plants were less diverse than wild plants, but Luteibacter rhizovicinus, Pseudomonas fulva, and Sphingomonas pruni were shared. Co-inoculation of Pseudoxanthomonas sp. JBCE485 and Variovorax paradoxus JBCE486 promoted growth and induced salt stress resistance in Arabidopsis and chive. Changes in growth promotion and phenotypes of plants by co-inoculation were mediated by increased auxin production. Each strain colonized the roots without niche competition. The results indicated that host selectivity was influential than environmental factors in formulating endophytic bacterial composition, and domestication simplified the bacterial community diversity. Intrinsic immunologic disparity of psoriasis itself, along with chronic inflammation and immunomodulatory anti-psoriatic treatments could be associated with increased risk of malignancy. We aimed to estimate the risk of malignancy in patients with psoriasis by treatment modality compared with that in individuals without psoriasis in Korea. We conducted a nationwide cohort study using the claims database of the National Health Insurance Service from January 2005 to December 2018. A total of 255,471 patients with psoriasis, and age- and sex-matched non-psoriasis participants (1:1 ratio) were enrolled. The adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) [95% confidence intervals (CIs)] for malignancy without nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) were 1.10 [1.08–1.12] in patients with psoriasis, 1.13 [1.00–1.27], 1.05 [0.97–1.13], and 1.24 [0.84–1.83] in phototherapy, non-biologic systemics, and biologics cohort, respectively. Among the non-biologic systemics cohort, patients treated with cyclosporin showed higher risk of malignancy without NMSC (aHR [95% CI], 1.20 [1.04–1.39]). The risk of malignancy without NMSC in patients with psoriasis was higher than that in individuals without psoriasis. Phototherapy and biologics were not associated with significant increase of risk; however, cyclosporin appeared to increase its risk. This study undertook to determine the changes in the numbers of outpatient visits for various ophthalmic diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic compared with before. The monthly outpatient visits for 14 common ophthalmic diseases were enumerated based on the ICD-10 codes in Korean National Health Insurance Service data. The differences in the mean outpatient visits and disease variance 'before' and 'during COVID-19' were calculated. Subsequently, subgroup analyses according to age and sex were performed. The number of outpatient visits for conjunctivitis, scleritis & episcleritis, keratitis, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, and traumatic ophthalmic disease were lower during than before COVID-19 (all P < 0.001). The lower numbers of outpatient visits for ophthalmic disorders during COVID-19 were consistent across the age and sex subgroups. All ophthalmic diseases other than endophthalmitis showed no change of variation 'during' relative to 'before' COVID-19. In conclusion, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the ophthalmic outpatient visits decreased for infectious and inflammatory diseases, screening diseases, and traumatic diseases. Moyamoya disease is a cerebrovascular disorder and a significant chronic health concern requiring regular monitoring to control the disease and its related complications. We examined a hypothetical model by integrating the concepts of a structural health-related quality-of-life model based on the salutogenesis theory, and to identify how social support, sense of coherence, and stress contribute to health behaviors, subjective health status, and quality of life in adolescents with moyamoya disease among 239 adolescents in Korea. A structural equation model was used to analyze the data. The fitness of the hypothetical model with the salutogenesis theory was satisfactory, showing that the goodness-of-fit index = 0.91, adjusted goodness-to-fit index = 0.90, comparative fit index = 0.92, normed fit index = 0.91, incremental fit index = 0.91, standardized root mean squared residual = 0.04, root mean square error of approximation = 0.07, parsimony normed fit index = 0.61, parsimony goodness of fit index = 0.51. The model explained 68.9% of quality of life. Health behavior (β = −0.173, p = 0.467) and stress (β = −0.557, p < 0.001) had significant direct and total effects on quality of life. Sense of coherence had a significant direct (β = 0.371, p = 0.003), indirect (β = 0.220, p = 0.013), and total (β = 0.590, p < 0.001) effect on quality of life. This study found that sense of coherence was significant factors contributing to lower stress, improved health status, and quality of life in adolescents with moyamoya disease. Recently, medium-sized earthquakes such as the Gyeongju 9.12 earthquake (September 12, 2016, ML = 5.8) and the Pohang earthquake (November 15, 2017, ML = 5.4) occurred in Korea, thereby increasing social concern about earthquakes. Because Korea is not located near the Circum-Pacific Belt, also referred to as the "Ring of Fire", people in Korea are not used to earthquake disasters. Coastal areas in Korea are lined with multiple mega-cities and major industrial facilities. Most of them constructed on landfill, they have a high threat level to the damage to populations and structures leading to complex disasters in the event of an earthquake. However, studies of seismic hazards in ports is incomplete compared with those of onshore sites. Improving the understanding of seismic hazards and characterizing them catching up with related research from various perspectives being actively conducted. In this study, the site-specific response characteristics of the Pohang International Container Terminal in Pohang Yeongil New Port were analyzed using the S-wave energy of 10 sets of ground motions recorded by seismic accelerometers operated by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries based on the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (H/V ratio) method. As a result of analysis, the H/V ratio curves show that the peak frequency values for the target site averages 9 Hz, and the natural period values of the site were preliminarily predicted to average 0.11 s. In addition, site amplification characteristics are different based on the seismic wave calculation method. Based on a field monitored dataset measured at landfill #1 over 21 years, the characteristics of settlement coupling mechanical creep and biodegradation and the residual settlement were analyzed. Since landfill #1 is a multi-stage municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill where dykes are constructed after landfilling for subsequent waste fills, the waste decomposition between the lower and upper lifts was quite different and it is difficult to discern between the mechanical creep and bio-compression on the settlement curves. The compression ratio coupled with mechanical creep and bio-compression and the residual compression ratio were determined as 0.233 and 0.068, respectively. This implies that biodegradation was gradually and significantly reduced in the MSW settlement behavior after the residual settlement began. The starting date of residual settlement was distributed between 3821 and 5402 days from the initial date of landfilling. The settlement coupling mechanical creep and biodegradation (SMB) was 2.9 times larger than the residual settlement (SRS), and the duration of SMB is determined to be 0.3 times that of SRS. In addition, the remnant methane gas content existed in the landfill gas, and low-level biodegradation was still generated in the waste buried for more than 10 years after the residual settlement began. The number of older adults in Korea is increasing, along with the number of depressed older patients. The causes of depression in older adults include social isolation with negligible interaction with others, irregular nutritional habits, and self-negligence, i.e., they do not engage in any activity. These factors, self-negligence, social isolation, and irregular nutritional habits, are defined as inherent health risks, and in this study, we detected them. These factors can only be derived through long-term monitoring, but the current monitoring system for older adults is severely limited as it focuses only on emergencies, such as "falls." Therefore, in this study, the goal was to perform long-term monitoring using a camera. In order to capture the physical characteristics of the older adults, the ETRI-Activity3D data were used for training, and the skeleton-based action recognition algorithm Posec3d was used. By defining 90 frames as the time taken for one action, we built a monitoring system to enable long-term monitoring of older adult by performing multiple action detection in one video. A reliable monitoring system, with 98% accuracy, 98% precision, 99% recall, and 98% F1, was successfully established for health monitoring of older adults. This older adult monitoring technology is expected to improve the quality of medical services in a medical environment as well as the objective, activities of daily living test, which does not depend on the observer through daily life detection. This nationwide population-based cohort study evaluated the association between lipid profiles and the future risk of exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using authorized clinical data provided by the Korean National Health Insurance Service. A total of 6,129,616 subjects over 50 years of age who participated in the Korean National Health Screening Program in 2013 or 2014 were included. Data on risk factors, including age, sex, comorbidities, behavioral factors, and baseline lipid profiles, including total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglyceride (TG) levels were collected. Patients were followed-up patients until December 2018, and incident cases of exudative AMD were identified using registered diagnostic codes. During an average follow-up period of 4.91 years, 18,803 patients were newly diagnosed with exudative AMD. Compared to the lowest HDL cholesterol quartile group, the highest HDL cholesterol quartile group had a greater risk of future exudative AMD development with a hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) of 1.13 (1.08–1.18) in the fully adjusted model. The highest TG quartile group had a lower risk of exudative AMD than the lowest TG quartile group, with a hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) of 0.84 (0.81–0.88). The waiting time for deceased donor kidney transplants (DDKT) is increasing. We evaluated DDKT prognosis according to the pretransplant dialysis vintage. A total of 4117 first-time kidney transplant recipients were enrolled from a prospective nationwide cohort in Korea. DDKT recipients were divided into tertiles according to pretransplant dialysis duration. Graft failure, mortality, and composite were compared between DDKT and living donor kidney transplant (LDKT) recipients. Pretransplant dialysis vintage was longer annually in DDKT recipients. In the subdistribution of the hazard model for the competing risk, the first tertile did not show an increased risk of graft failure compared with LDKT recipients; however, the second and third tertile groups had an increased risk of graft failure compared to LDKT recipients (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 3.59; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.69–7.63; P < 0.001; aHR 2.37; 95% CI 1.06–5.33; P = 0.037). All DDKT groups showed a significantly higher risk of patient death than LDKT, with the highest risk in the third tertile group (aHR 11.12; 95% CI 4.94–25.00; P < 0.001). A longer pretransplant dialysis period was associated with a higher risk of the composite of patient death and graft failure in DDKT recipients.
