The non-ergodic extended (NEE) regime in physical and random matrix (RM) models has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. Formally, NEE regime is characterized by its fractal wavefunctions and long-range spectral correlations such as number variance or spectral form factor. More recently, it’s proposed that this regime can be conveniently revealed through the eigenvalue spectra by means of singular-value-decomposition (SVD), whose results display a super-Poissonian behavior that reflects the minibands structure of NEE regime. In this work, we employ SVD to a number of RM models, and show it not only qualitatively reveals the NEE regime, but also quantitatively locates the ergodic-NEE transition point. With SVD, we further suggest the NEE regime in a new RM model–the sparse RM model.

Global warming has led to frequent droughts, posing challenges for afforestation in arid and semiarid regions. In search of labor-saving and money-saving methods to improve the survival and growth rates of trees in these regions, we isolated and identified fungal endophytes that can potentially enhance the drought-resistance abilities of seedlings. We isolated 93 endophytic strains from the roots of Pinus tabulaeformis trees grown on an arid cliff. Three isolates increased the drought resistance of the tree seedlings. Using morphological, molecular, and physiological-biochemical methods, we identified three isolates as different clones of a strain of Phoma spp. and studied the strain’s effect on stress resistance-related substances in the seedlings. The results showed that the strain improved drought tolerance and increased the seedlings’ proline levels and antioxidant enzyme activities. The strain also secreted abundant extracellular abscisic acid, which likely triggered the seedlings’ protective mechanisms. This endophytic strain may provide a cheaper labor-saving, sustainable alternative to traditional methods of enhancing drought resistance.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease that primarily affects the joints. Overweight and obesity can aggravate disease activity and clinical outcome in patients with RA. However, the role of bariatric surgery in inducing weight loss in the treatment of RA has not been confirmed. In this 12-month prospective cohort study, RA patients with obesity who were referred to our hospital were included. Thirty-two patients were classified into the bariatric surgery group according to the patient’s decision after a comprehensive assessment of surgery indications, and 33 patients received only pharmacotherapy for RA. At the 12-month follow-up, the response rates of ACR20, ACR50 and ACR70 were 75.0% vs. 51.5%, 53.1% vs. 39.4% and 31.3% vs. 21.2% in the bariatric surgery and non-surgery groups, respectively (all p 0.05). Compared to non-surgical patients, in RA patients with obesity, weight loss after bariatric surgery was associated with lower disease activity. Medication tapering for RA in patients who underwent bariatric surgery was not superior to that in non-surgical patients.

The hormone renin plays a crucial role in the regulation of blood pressure and fluid-electrolyte homeostasis. Normally, renin is synthesized by juxtaglomerular (JG) cells, a specialized group of myoepithelial cells located near the entrance to the kidney glomeruli. In response to low blood pressure and/or a decrease in extracellular fluid volume (as it occurs during dehydration, hypotension, or septic shock) JG cells respond by releasing renin to the circulation to reestablish homeostasis. Interestingly, renin-expressing cells also exist outside of the kidney, where their function has remained a mystery. We discovered a unique type of renin-expressing B-1 lymphocyte that may have unrecognized roles in defending the organism against infections. These cells synthesize renin, entrap and phagocyte bacteria and control bacterial growth. The ability of renin-bearing lymphocytes to control infections—which is enhanced by the presence of renin—adds a novel, previously unsuspected dimension to the defense role of renin-expressing cells, linking the endocrine control of circulatory homeostasis with the immune control of infections to ensure survival.

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) plays an essential role in many exotic and interesting phenomena in condensed matter physics. In neutral-atom-based quantum simulations, synthetic SOC constitutes a key enabling element. The strength of SOC realized so far is limited by various reasons or constraints. This work reports tunable SOC synthesized with a gradient magnetic field (GMF) for atoms in a harmonic trap. Nearly ten-fold enhancement is observed when the GMF is modulated near the harmonic-trap resonance in comparison with free-space atoms. A theory is developed that well explains the experimental results. Coxsackievirus A16 (CA16) is one of the major pathogens associated with human hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in the Asia-pacific region. Although CA16 infections are generally mild, severe neurological manifestations or even death has been reported. Studies on CA16 pathogenesis and vaccine development are severely hampered because the small animal models that are currently available show major limitations. In this study, gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) were investigated for their suitability as an animal model to study CA16 pathogenesis and vaccine development. Our results showed that gerbils up to the age of 21 days were fully susceptible to CA16 and all died within five days post-infection. CA16 showed a tropism towards the skeletal muscle, spinal cord and brainstem of gerbils, and severe lesions, including necrosis, were observed. In addition, an inactivated CA16 whole-virus vaccine administrated to gerbils was able to provide full protection to the gerbils against lethal doses of CA16 strains. These results demonstrate that gerbils are a suitable animal model to study CA16 infection and vaccine development.

We experimentally demonstrate that standing waves formed by two coherent counter-propagating light waves can take a variety of forms, offering new approaches to the interrogation and control of polarization-sensitive light-matter interactions in ultrathin (subwavelength thickness) media. In contrast to familiar energy standing waves, polarization standing waves have constant electric and magnetic energy densities and a periodically varying polarization state along the wave axis. counterintuitively, anisotropic ultrathin (meta)materials can be made sensitive or insensitive to such polarization variations by adjusting their azimuthal angle.

A new process consisting of a landfill bioreactor, partial-nitritation (PN) and the anammox process has been developed for landfill leachate treatment. In this study, the landfill bioreactor exhibited excellent performance in methane-rich biogas recovery, with a specific biogas yield of 0.47 L gas g−1 COD and methane percentages of 53–76%. PN was achieved in the aerobic reactor by high free ammonia (101 ± 83 mg NH3 L−1) inhibition for nitrite-oxidizing bacteria and the desired PN effluent composition (effluent nitrite: ammonium ratio of 1.1 ± 0.3) was controlled by adjusting the alkalinity concentration per unit of ammonium oxidized to approximately 14.3 mg CaCO3 mg−1 N in the influent. The startup of anammox process was successfully achieved with a membrane bioreactor in 160 d and a maximum nitrogen removal rate of 216 mg N L−1 d−1 was attained for real landfill leachate treatment. The quantitative polymerase chain reaction results confirmed that the cell-specific anammox activity was approximately 68–95 fmol N cell−1 d−1, which finally led to the stable operation of the system.

The hip fracture is one major clinical challenge associated with osteoporosis, resulting in heavy socioeconomic burdens and high mortality. Systemic therapies of anti-osteoporosis drugs are expensive, time-consuming and also evoke substantial side effects, which fails to provide early protection from fractures. Accumulating evidence demonstrates the high bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy of local drug delivery in accelerating facture healing and bone defect repair. This study aims at investigating the effects of local delivery of BMP2 and zoledronate (two promising anabolic/anti-catobolic reagents) encapsulated by fibrin sealants into femoral necks on regulating bone quality and remodeling in osteoporotic rabbits subjected to combined ovariectomy and glucocorticoid injection. We show that 6-week BMP2 delivery exhibited more prominent effect on mitigating trabecular bone microarchitecture deterioration and mechanical strength reduction of femoral necks than local zoledronate treatment. BMP2 plus zoledronate showed more significant improvement of bone microstructure, mechanical strength and bone formation rate at 12 weeks post injection than single BMP2 or zoledronate delivery via μCT, biomechanical, histomorphometric and serum biochemical analyses. This study enriches our knowledge for understanding the availability of local drug delivery for improving bone quantity and quality, which may lead to earlier, safer and more efficient protection from osteoporosis-induced fractures in clinics.

Tribological performance of the hot-pressed pure Al2O3 and its composites containing various hybrid contents of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were investigated under different loading conditions using the ball-on-disc method. Benchmarked against the pure Al2O3, the composite reinforced with a 0.5 wt% GNP exhibited a 23% reduction in the friction coefficient along with a promising 70% wear rate reduction and a hybrid reinforcement consisting of 0.3 wt.% GNPs + 1 wt.% CNTs resulted in even better performance, with a 86% reduction in the wear rate. The extent of damage to the reinforcement phases caused during wear was studied using Raman spectroscopy. The wear mechanisms for the composites were analysed based on the mechanical properties, brittleness index and microstructural characterizations. The excellent coordination between GNPs and CNTs contributed to the excellent wear resistance property in the hybrid GNT-reinforced composites. GNPs played the important role in the formation of a tribofilm on the worn surface by exfoliation; whereas CNTs contributed to the improvement in fracture toughness and prevented the grains from being pulled out during the tribological test.

A total of 142 premenopausal women with symptomatic adenomyosis underwent ultrasound (US)-guided percutaneous microwave ablation (PMWA) at the Chinese PLA General Hospital. This study aimed to evaluate changes in serum pituitary, gonadal hormone and cancer antigen 125 (CA125) levels after US-guided PMWA. Therefore, estradiol (E2), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), prolactin (PRL) and CA125 levels were evaluated before ablation and at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months after ablation. No significant differences were observed in the E2 and FSH levels pre-ablation and during follow-up (E2: p = 0.933, p = 0.987, p = 0.106, p = 0.936; FSH: p = 0.552, p = 0.295, p = 0.414, p = 0.760). Plant innate immunity depends on the function of a large number of intracellular immune receptor proteins, the majority of which are structurally similar to mammalian nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptor (NLR) proteins. CHILLING SENSITIVE 3 (CHS3) encodes an atypical Toll/Interleukin 1 Receptor (TIR)-type NLR protein with an additional Lin-11, Isl-1 and Mec-3 (LIM) domain at its C-terminus. The gain-of-function mutant allele chs3-2D exhibits severe dwarfism and constitutively activated defense responses, including enhanced resistance to virulent pathogens, high defence marker gene expression and salicylic acid accumulation. To search for novel regulators involved in CHS3-mediated immune signaling, we conducted suppressor screens in the chs3-2D and chs3-2D pad4-1 genetic backgrounds. Alleles of sag101 and eds1-90 were isolated as complete suppressors of chs3-2D and alleles of sgt1b were isolated as partial suppressors of chs3-2D pad4-1. These mutants suggest that SAG101, EDS1-90 and SGT1b are all positive regulators of CHS3-mediated defense signaling. Additionally, the TIR-type NLR-encoding CSA1 locus located genomically adjacent to CHS3 was found to be fully required for chs3-2D-mediated autoimmunity. CSA1 is located 3.9 kb upstream of CHS3 and is transcribed in the opposite direction. Altogether, these data illustrate the distinct genetic requirements for CHS3-mediated defense signaling.
