This paper focus on a neural network classification model to estimate the association among gender, race, BMI, age, smoking, kidney disease and diabetes in hypertensive patients. It also shows that artificial neural network techniques applied to large clinical data sets may provide a meaningful data-driven approach to categorize patients for population health management, and support in the control and detection of hypertensive patients, which is part of the critical factors for diseases of the heart. Data was obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2016. This paper utilized an imbalanced data set of 24,434 with (69.71%) non-hypertensive patients, and (30.29%) hypertensive patients. The results indicate a sensitivity of 40%, a specificity of 87%, precision of 57.8% and a measured AUC of 0.77 (95% CI [75.01–79.01]). This paper showed results that are to some degree more effectively than a previous study performed by the authors using a statistical model with similar input features that presents a calculated AUC of 0.73. This classification model can be used as an inference agent to assist the professionals in diseases of the heart field, and can be implemented in applications to assist population health management programs in identifying patients with high risk of developing hypertension. In the present paper, we aimed to determine the influence of various non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) enforced during the first wave of COVID-19 across countries on the spreading rate of COVID-19 during the second wave. For this purpose, we took into account national-level climatic, environmental, clinical, health, economic, pollution, social, and demographic factors. We estimated the growth of the first and second wave across countries by fitting a logistic model to daily-reported case numbers, up to the first and second epidemic peaks. We estimated the basic and effective (second wave) reproduction numbers across countries. Next, we used a random forest algorithm to study the association between the growth rate of the second wave and NPIs as well as pre-existing country-specific characteristics. Lastly, we compared the growth rate of the first and second waves of COVID-19. The top three factors associated with the growth of the second wave were body mass index, the number of days that the government sets restrictions on requiring facial coverings outside the home at all times, and restrictions on gatherings of 10 people or less. Artificial intelligence techniques can help scholars as well as decision and policy-makers estimate the effectiveness of public health policies, and implement "smart" interventions, which are as efficacious as stringent ones. It is hypothesized that vitamin D deficiency could be related to ovarian reserve. This systematic review and meta-analysis was undertaken to analyze the possible association between vitamin D and ovarian reserve among adolescent and adult women. All eligible studies identified through the ISI Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus were included up to May 2021. A random-effects meta-analysis model was implemented and a weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. A total of 38 papers covering 8608 individuals were enrolled in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Antral follicle count (AFC) was significantly lower among Asians (WMD − 0.65; 95% CI − 1.28 to − 0.01; P = 0.04; I2 = 0.0%) and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels were higher in non-Asians (WMD 2.16 IU/L; 95% CI 0.20 to 4.12; P = 0.031; I2 = 9.3%) with vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency. Also, there was a negative correlation between vitamin D and LH/FSH ratio in women with normal body mass index (BMI) (Fisher's Z: − 0.18; 95% CI − 0.37 to − 0.008; P = 0.041; I2 = 51.5%). Although there were no significant associations between serum vitamin D levels and any of the intended ovarian reserve markers, subgroup analyses have found significant findings regarding AFC, LH, and LH/FSH ratio. A limited number of papers have addressed the association between non-dipping-blood pressure (BP) obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and no study has assessed BP-dipping during rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep in OSA patients. This study sought to noninvasively assess BP-dipping during REM and non-REM (NREM)-sleep using a beat-by-beat measurement method (pulse-transit-time (PTT)). Thirty consecutive OSA patients (men = 50%) who had not been treated for OSA before and who had > 20-min of REM-sleep were included. During sleep, BP was indirectly determined via PTT. Patients were divided into dippers and non-dippers based on the average systolic-BP during REM and NREM-sleep. The studied group had a a median age of 50 (42–58.5) years and a body mass index of 33.8 (27.6–37.5) kg/m2. The median AHI of the study group was 32.6 (20.1–58.1) events/h (range: 7–124), and 89% of them had moderate-to-severe OSA. The prevalence of non-dippers during REM-sleep was 93.3%, and during NREM-sleep was 80%. During NREM sleep, non-dippers had a higher waist circumference and waist-hip-ratio, higher severity of OSA, longer-time spent with oxygen saturation < 90%, and a higher mean duration of apnea during REM and NREM-sleep. Severe OSA (AHI ≥ 30) was defined as an independent predictor of non-dipping BP during NREM sleep (OR = 19.5, CI: [1.299–292.75], p-value = 0.03). This short report demonstrated that BP-dipping occurs during REM and NREM-sleep in patients with moderate-to-severe OSA. Our understanding of pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) is based on a paper published 29 years ago by Karydakis. Since then, surgeons have been taught that hair more easily penetrates wet skin, leading to the assumption that sweating promotes PSD. This postulate, however, has never been proven. Thus we used pilocarpine iontophoresis to assess sweating in the glabella sacralis. 100 patients treated for PSD and 100 controls were matched for sex, age and body mass index (BMI). Pilocarpine iontophoresis was performed for 5 min, followed by 15 min of sweat collection. PSD patients sweated less than their matched pairs (18.4 ± 1.6 µl vs. 24.2 ± 2.1 µl, p = 0.03). Men sweated more than women (22.2 ± 1.2 µl vs. 15.0 ± 1.0 µl in non-PSD patients (p < 0.0001) and 20.0 ± 1.9 µl vs. 11.9 ± 2.0 µl in PSD patients (p = 0.051)). And regular exercisers sweated more than non-exercisers (29.1 ± 2.9 µl vs. 18.5 ± 1.6 µl, p = 0.0006 for men and 20.7 ± 2.3 µl vs. 11.4 ± 1.4 µl, p = 0.0005 for women). Australian Indigenous young people have a 10-fold excess of deaths from ischaemic heart disease compared with non-Indigenous Australians, yet the reasons behind this remain understudied. This paper aims to describe cardio-metabolic profiles among Australian Indigenous (n = 459) and non-Indigenous (n = 117) young adults (21-27 years). The association between body size and an adverse cardio-metabolic profile (≥3 abnormal cardio-metabolic markers) is assessed by gender and urban/rural residence, employing regression analyses. The prevalence of obesity was highest among urban Indigenous participants, both males and females (22% and 23%, respectively). Overall, BMI showed a significant positive association with an adverse cardio-metabolic profile. Moreover, adverse cardio-metabolic profile was present in a substantial proportion of Indigenous participants even in overweight and normal BMI categories. Among females, this could reflect elevated waist circumference, which was present in half of those of normal weight. Remote Indigenous females had the highest predicted probability of having an adverse cardio-metabolic profile across all BMI categories (13% for underweight, 54% for normal BMI, 93% for overweight, and 99% for obese). Our findings highlight the associations between obesity and adverse cardio-metabolic profiles among Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth. Culturally-relevant strategies that address lifestyle risks, including access to healthy food, are urgently needed in this age group.

Malnutrition is classified into marasmus and kwashiorkor in children. However, the clinical significance of these aspects is unclear in adult patients with heart failure (HF). We divided 2308 adult patients with HF into four groups according to marasmus type (body mass index < 18.5 kg/m2) and kwashiorkor type (serum albumin < 3.4 g/dL) malnutrition: Group C (no malnutrition, n = 1511, 65.5%), Group M (marasmus type malnutrition, n = 133, 5.8%), Group K (kwashiorkor type malnutrition, n = 554, 24.0%) and Group MK (marasmic-kwashiorkor type malnutrition, n = 110, 4.8%). Group M showed the lowest blood pressure. Groups K and MK showed higher levels of B-type natriuretic peptide. Right atrial pressure was lowest in Groups M and MK. Kaplan-Meir analysis demonstrated that Group MK had the lowest event-free rate of all-cause death and cardiac death. In the multivariable Cox proportional hazard analysis, Groups M, K, and MK were associated with all-cause death (hazard ratio 1.790, 1.657 and 2.313, respectively) and cardiac death (hazard ratio 2.053, 1.855 and 3.001, respectively) compared to Group C as a reference. Marasmus type and kwashiorkor type malnutrition are associated with distinct profiles and high mortality, and marasmic-kwashiorkor type malnutrition has the poorest prognosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cardiometabolic risk factors increase the chance of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes. Most CVD risk factors are influenced by total and regional obesity. A higher risk of developing CVD may be linked to vitamin D deficiency, which is more prevalent in the older population. With the goal of evaluating the association between vitamin D and cardiometabolic risk factors and total and regional obesity in older adults, this research included 25 (OH) vitamin D3 concentrations and biochemical markers associated with cardiometabolic diseases, as well as total and regional adiposity, which was measured by DXA. A total of 1991 older participants in the PoCOsteo study were included. Overall, 38.5% of participants had vitamin D deficiency. After adjusting for confounders, the results of multiple linear and logistic regression suggested an inverse association between vitamin D and body mass index (P = 0.04), waist circumference (P = 0.001), total fat (P = 0.02), android fat (P = 0.001), visceral fat (P < 0.001), subcutaneous fat (P = 0.01), trunk fat (P = 0.006), arm fat (P = 0.03), high systolic blood pressure (P = 0.004), high total cholesterol (P < 0.001), high LDL-cholesterol (P < 0.001), high serum triglycerides (P = 0.001), and high fasting glucose (P < 0.001). Additionally, higher vitamin D concentrations decreased the risk of dyslipidemia by 2%. The 24-h movement guidelines for children and adolescents comprise recommendations for adequate sleep, moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behaviour (SB). However, whether adolescents who meet these 24-h movement guidelines may be less likely to have high blood pressure (HBP) has not been established. The present study assessed the association between meeting 24-h movement guidelines and HBP in a school-based sample of 996 adolescents between 10–17 years (13.2 ± 2.4 years, 55.4% of girls). Blood pressure was measured using a digital oscillometric device, while sleep, MVPA and SB were measured using the Baecke questionnaire. The association between the 24-h movement guidelines and HBP was performed using binary logistic regression adjusted for sex, age, socioeconomic status, and body mass index. It was observed that less than 1% of the sample meet the three 24-h movement guidelines. The prevalence of HBP was lower in adolescents who meet all three movement 24-h guidelines (11.1%) compared to those who did not meet any guidelines (27.2%). Individual 24-h movement guidelines analysis showed that adolescents with adequate sleep were 35% less likely to have HBP (OR = 0.65; 95% CI 0.46–0.91). Meeting sleep guidelines combined with meeting MVPA (OR = 0.69; 95% CI 0.50–0.95) or SB (OR = 0.67; 95% CI 0.48–0.94) was inversely associated with HBP. Adolescents who meet two or three 24-h movement guidelines were respectively 47% (OR = 0.53; 95% CI 0.29–0.98) and 34% (OR = 0.66; 95% CI 0.48–0.91) less likely to have HBP. This study aimed to progress the understanding of idiopathic hypersomnia (IH) by assessing the moderating influence of individual characteristics, such as age, sex, and body mass index (BMI) on sleep architecture. In this retrospective study, 76 IH participants (38.1 ± 11.3 years; 40 women) underwent a clinical interview, an in-laboratory polysomnography with a maximal 9-h time in bed and a multiple sleep latency test (MSLT). They were compared to 106 healthy controls (38.1 ± 14.1 years; 60 women). Multiple regressions were used to assess moderating influence of age, sex, and BMI on sleep variables. We used correlations to assess whether sleep variables were associated with Epworth Sleepiness Scale scores and mean sleep onset latency on the MSLT in IH participants. Compared to controls, IH participants had shorter sleep latency (p = 0.002), longer total sleep time (p < 0.001), more time spent in N2 sleep (p = 0.008), and showed trends for a higher sleep efficiency (p = 0.023) and more time spent in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep (p = 0.022). No significant moderating influence of age, sex, or BMI was found. More severe self-reported sleepiness in IH patients was correlated with shorter REM sleep latency and less N1 sleep in terms of proportion and duration (ps < 0.01). This study shows that, when compared to healthy controls, patients with IH had no anomalies in their sleep architecture that can explain their excessive daytime sleepiness. Common strategy of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) relying on large samples faces difficulties, which raise concerns that GWAS have exhausted their potential, particularly for complex traits. Here, we examine the efficiency of the traditional sample-size-centered strategy in GWAS of these traits, and its potential for improvement. The paper focuses on the results of the four largest GWAS meta-analyses of body mass index (BMI) and lipids. We show that just increasing sample size may not make p-values of genetic effects in large (N > 100,000) samples smaller but can make them larger. The efficiency of these GWAS, defined as ratio of the log-transformed p-value to the sample size, in larger samples was larger than in smaller samples for a small fraction of loci. These results emphasize the important role of heterogeneity in genetic associations with complex traits such as BMI and lipids. They highlight the substantial potential for improving GWAS by explicating this role (affecting 11-79% of loci in the selected GWAS), especially the effects of biodemographic processes, which are heavily underexplored in current GWAS and which are important sources of heterogeneity in the various study populations. Further progress in this direction is crucial for efficient use of genetic discoveries in health care.

To examine the influence of Body Mass Index (BMI) on laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) short-term and long-term outcomes for gastric cancer. A retrospective analysis was conducted on gastric cancer patients undergoing LG at the Third Hospital of Nanchang City from January 2013 to January 2022. Based on WHO BMI standards, patients were categorized into normal weight, overweight, and obese groups. Factors such as operative time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative complications, and overall survival were assessed. Across different BMI groups, it was found that an increase in BMI was associated with longer operative times (average times: 206.22 min for normal weight, 231.32 min for overweight, and 246.78 min for obese), with no significant differences noted in intraoperative blood loss, postoperative complications, or long-term survival among the groups. The impact of BMI on long-term survival following LG for gastric cancer was found to be insignificant, with no notable differences in survival outcome between different BMI groups. Although higher BMI is associated with increased operative time in LG for gastric cancer, it does not significantly affect intraoperative blood loss, postoperative complications, recovery, or long-term survival. Sarcopenia has been associated with higher toxicity induced by anti-cancer treatments and shorter survival in patients with squamous cell lung carcinoma (SqCLC). Over the past few decades, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) significantly improves the prognosis. However, few clinical studies explored the effectiveness of immunotherapy in the elderly population. Here, we performed a retrospective analysis to determine the prognostic role of sarcopenia in older patients with SqCLC receiving ICIs. We retrospectively assessed SqCLC patients who were treated with PD-1 inhibitors and all patients were at least 70 years old. Pre-treatment sarcopenic status was determined by analyzing L3 skeletal muscle index (SMI) with chest CT. Progression-free survival (PFS), disease-specific survival (DSS) and overall survival (OS) were estimated using the Kaplan–Meier method, and the differences in survival were compared using the log-rank test. Among 130 male SqCLC patients, 93 had sarcopenia. Patients with sarcopenia were older and had a lower body mass index (BMI). Over an average follow-up of 20.8 months, 92 patients died. For all 130 patients, the mean OS was 13.3 months. Patients with sarcopenia had a significantly shorter OS and PFS than those without sarcopenia (OS, 12.4 ± 5.2 months vs. 15.5 ± 10.5 months, P = 0.028; PFS, 6.4 ± 2.9 months vs. 7.7 ± 4.2 months; P = 0.035). Multivariable analysis showed that sarcopenia was an independent prognostic factor for shorter OS and PFS. The high burden of anaemia during pregnancy underscores the urgent need to gain a comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to its widespread occurrence. Our study assessed the prevalence and the trends of moderate-to-severe anaemia (MSA) in late pregnancy (28 to 36 weeks) and then investigated the key determinants driving this prevalence among women in Lagos, Nigeria. We conducted a secondary data analysis involving 1216 women enrolled in the Predict-PPH study between January and March 2023. We employed a multivariate binary logistic regression model with a backward stepwise selection approach to identify significant predictors of MSA. The study revealed a 14.5% prevalence of MSA during pregnancy. Independent predictors of MSA included having given birth to two or more children (adjusted odds ratio = 1.46, 95% confidence interval: 1.03–2.07), having a maternal body mass index (BMI) of 28 kg/m2 or higher (adjusted odds ratio = 1.84, 95% confidence interval: 1.29–2.61), having less than tertiary education (adjusted odds ratio = 1.51, 95% confidence interval: 1.08–2.11), and being unemployed (adjusted odds ratio = 1.97, 95% confidence interval: 1.19–3.26). It is crucial for pregnant women, particularly those with higher parities and elevated BMI, to be monitored regularly for anaemia and its consequences during their antenatal care. Additionally, addressing the link between low education, unemployment, and anaemia necessitates comprehensive strategies that empower women in terms of education and economic status to enhance the overall well-being of individuals and communities, ultimately reducing the prevalence of anaemia and associated health issues in pregnancy. Plyometric training (PT) is an effective training method for improving physical fitness among trained individuals; however, its impact on health-related physical fitness in untrained participants remains ambiguous. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of PT on health-related physical fitness among untrained participants. Six electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL Plus, MEDLINE Complete, Web of Science Core Collection, SCOPUS, and SPORTDiscus) were systematically searched until March 2024. We included controlled trials that examined the effects of PT on health-related physical fitness indices in untrained participants. Twenty-one studies were eligible, including a total of 1263 participants. Our analyses revealed small to moderate effects of PT on body mass index, muscular strength, cardiorespiratory fitness, and flexibility (ES = 0.27–0.61; all p > 0.05). However, no significant effects were detected for body fat percentage and lean mass (ES = 0.21–0.41; all p > 0.05). In conclusion, the findings suggest that PT may be potentially effective in improving health-related physical fitness indices (i.e., body mass index, muscular strength, cardiorespiratory fitness, and flexibility) in untrained participants. Identifying factors linked to autism traits in the general population may improve our understanding of the mechanisms underlying divergent neurodevelopment. In this study we assess whether factors increasing the likelihood of childhood autism are related to early autistic trait emergence, or if other exposures are more important. We used data from 536 toddlers from London (UK), collected at birth (gestational age at birth, sex, maternal body mass index, age, parental education, parental language, parental history of neurodevelopmental conditions) and at 18 months (parents cohabiting, measures of socio-economic deprivation, measures of maternal parenting style, and a measure of maternal depression). Autism traits were assessed using the Quantitative Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (Q-CHAT) at 18 months. A multivariable model explained 20% of Q-CHAT variance, with four individually significant variables (two measures of parenting style and two measures of socio-economic deprivation). In order to address variable collinearity we used principal component analysis, finding that a component which was positively correlated with Q-CHAT was also correlated to measures of parenting style and socio-economic deprivation. Our results show that parenting style and socio-economic deprivation correlate with the emergence of autism traits at age 18 months as measured with the Q-CHAT in a community sample. Both underweight and obesity have been associated with poor prognosis in COVID-19. In an older populations of patients hospitalized for SARS-CoV-2 infection, we aimed to evaluate the association between body mass index (BMI) and short and long-term prognosis. Among 434 consecutive patients aged ≥ 70 years and hospitalized for suspected COVID-19 at a university hospital, 219 patients (median age of 83 years, 53% male) testing positive for COVID-19 and for whom BMI was recorded at admission, agreed to participate. Among them, 39 had a BMI < 20 kg/m2, 73 had a BMI between 20 and 24.9 kg/m2 and 107 had a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2. After adjustment for confounders, BMI < 20 kg/m2 was associated with a higher risk of one-year mortality (hazard ratio (HR) [95% confidence interval]: 1.75 [1.00–3.05], p = 0.048), while BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 was not (HR: 1.04 [0.64–1.69], p = 0.9). However, BMI was linearly correlated with both in-hospital acute respiratory failure (p = 0.02) and cardiovascular events (p = 0.07). In this cohort of older patients hospitalized for COVID-19, low BMI, rather than high BMI, appears as an independent risk factor for death after COVID-19. This cross-sectional study aimed to develop and validate population-based machine learning models for examining the association between breastfeeding and metabolic syndrome in women. The artificial neural network, the decision tree, logistic regression, the Naïve Bayes, the random forest and the support vector machine were developed and validated to predict metabolic syndrome in women. Data came from 30,204 women, who aged 20 years or more and participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys 2010–2019. The dependent variable was metabolic syndrome. The 86 independent variables included demographic/socioeconomic determinants, cardiovascular disease, breastfeeding duration and other medical/obstetric information. The random forest had the best performance in terms of the area under the receiver-operating-characteristic curve, e.g., 90.7%. According to random forest variable importance, the top predictors of metabolic syndrome included body mass index (0.1032), medication for hypertension (0.0552), hypertension (0.0499), cardiovascular disease (0.0453), age (0.0437) and breastfeeding duration (0.0191). Breastfeeding duration is a major predictor of metabolic syndrome for women together with body mass index, diagnosis and medication for hypertension, cardiovascular disease and age. High cortisol production in Cushing's syndrome leads to fat centralisation. The influence of modest cortisol variations on body shape, however, is less clear. We examined potentially causal associations between morning plasma cortisol and body shape and obesity with inverse-variance weighted random-effects models in a two-sample Mendelian randomisation analysis. We used publicly available summary statistics from the CORtisol NETwork (CORNET) consortium, UK Biobank, and the Genetic Investigation of Anthropometric Traits (GIANT) consortium. Only in women, morning plasma cortisol (proxied by ten genetic polymorphisms) was associated positively with waist size reflected in waist-to-hip index (WHI, 0.035 standard deviation (SD) units change per one SD cortisol increase; 95% confidence interval (0.002–0.067); p = 0.036) and "a body shape index" (ABSI; 0.039 (0.006–0.071); p = 0.021). There was no evidence for associations with hip index (HI) or body mass index (BMI). Among individual polymorphisms, rs7450600 stood out (chromosome 6; Long Intergenic Non-Protein-Coding RNA 473 gene, LINC00473). Morning plasma cortisol proxied by rs7450600 was associated positively with WHI and inversely with HI and BMI in women and men. Our findings support a causal association of higher morning plasma cortisol with larger waist size in women and highlight LINC00473 as a genetic link between morning plasma cortisol and body shape. Predicting the transition of kidney function in chronic kidney disease is difficult as specific symptoms are lacking and often overlooked, and progress occurs due to complicating factors. In this study, we applied time-series cluster analysis and a light gradient boosting machine to predict the trajectories of kidney function in non-dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease patients with baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) ≥ 45 mL/min/1.73 m2. Based on 5-year changes in estimated GFR, participants were stratified into groups with similar trajectories by cluster analysis. Next, we applied the light gradient boosting machine algorithm and Shapley addictive explanation to develop a prediction model for clusters and identify important parameters for prediction. Data from 780 participants were available for analysis. Participants were classified into five classes (Class 1: n = 78, mean [± standard deviation] estimated GFR 100 ± 19.3 mL/min/1.73 m2; Class 2: n = 176, 76.0 ± 9.3 mL/min/1.73 m2; Class 3: n = 191, 59.8 ± 5.9 mL/min/1.73 m2; Class 4: n = 261, 52.7 ± 4.6 mL/min/1.73 m2; and Class 5: n = 74, 53.5 ± 12.0 mL/min/1.73 m2). Declines in estimated GFR were 8.9% in Class 1, 12.2% in Class 2, 4.9% in Class 3, 12.0% in Class 4, and 45.1% in Class 5 during the 5-year period. The accuracy of prediction was 0.675, and the top three most important Shapley addictive explanation values were 1.61 for baseline estimated GFR, 0.12 for hemoglobin, and 0.11 for body mass index. The estimated GFR transition of patients with preserved chronic kidney disease mostly depended on baseline estimated GFR, and the borderline for estimated GFR trajectory was nearly 50 mL/min/1.73 m2. Disparities in socio-economic status (SES) predict many immune system-related diseases, and previous research documents relationships between SES and the immune cell transcriptome. Drawing on a bioinformatically-informed network approach, we situate these findings in a broader molecular framework by examining the upstream regulators of SES-associated transcriptional alterations. Data come from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), a nationally representative sample of 4543 adults in the United States. Results reveal a network—of differentially expressed genes, transcription factors, and protein neighbors of transcription factors—that shows widespread SES-related dysregulation of the immune system. Mediational models suggest that body mass index (BMI) plays a key role in accounting for many of these associations. Overall, the results reveal the central role of upstream regulators in socioeconomic differences in the molecular basis of immunity, which propagate to increase risk of chronic health conditions in later-life. A precise forecast of the need for blood transfusions (BT) in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a crucial step toward the implementation of precision medicine. To achieve this goal, we utilized supervised machine learning (SML) techniques to establish a predictive model for BT requirements in THA patients. Additionally, we employed unsupervised machine learning (UML) approaches to identify clinical heterogeneity among these patients. In this study, we recruited 224 patients undergoing THA. To identify factors predictive of BT during the perioperative period of THA, we employed LASSO regression and the random forest (RF) algorithm as part of supervised machine learning (SML). Using logistic regression, we developed a predictive model for BT in THA patients. Furthermore, we utilized unsupervised machine learning (UML) techniques to cluster THA patients who required BT based on similar clinical features. The resulting clusters were subsequently visualized and validated. We constructed a predictive model for THA patients who required BT based on six predictive factors: Age, Body Mass Index (BMI), Hemoglobin (HGB), Platelet (PLT), Bleeding Volume, and Urine Volume. Before surgery, 1 h after surgery, 1 day after surgery, and 1 week after surgery, significant differences were observed in HGB and PLT levels between patients who received BT and those who did not. The predictive model achieved an AUC of 0.899. Employing UML, we identified two distinct clusters with significantly heterogeneous clinical characteristics. Age, BMI, PLT, HGB, bleeding volume, and urine volume were found to be independent predictors of BT requirement in THA patients. The predictive model incorporating these six predictors demonstrated excellent predictive performance. Rural children are more at risk for childhood obesity but may have difficulty participating in pediatric weight management clinical trials if in-person visits are required. Remote assessment of height and weight observed via videoconferencing may provide a solution by improving the accuracy of self-reported data. This study aims to validate a low-cost, scalable video-assisted protocol for remote height and weight measurements in children and caregivers. Families were provided with low-cost digital scales and tape measures and a standardized protocol for remote measurements. Thirty-three caregiver and child (6–11 years old) dyads completed remote (at home) height and weight measurements while being observed by research staff via videoconferencing, as well as in-person measurements with research staff. We compared the overall and absolute mean differences in child and caregiver weight, height, body mass index (BMI), and child BMI adjusted Z-score (BMIaz) between remote and in-person measurements using paired samples t-tests and one sample t-tests, respectively. Bland–Altman plots were used to estimate the limits of agreement (LOA) and assess systematic bias. Simple regression models were used to examine associations between measurement discrepancies and sociodemographic factors and number of days between measurements. Overall mean differences in child and caregiver weight, height, BMI, and child BMIaz were not significantly different between remote and in-person measurements. LOAs were − 2.1 and 1.7 kg for child weight, − 5.2 and 4.0 cm for child height, − 1.5 and 1.7 kg/m2 for child BMI, − 0.4 and 0.5 SD for child BMIaz, − 3.0 and 2.8 kg for caregiver weight, − 2.9 and 3.9 cm for caregiver height, and − 2.1 and 1.6 kg/m2 for caregiver BMI. Absolute mean differences were significantly different between the two approaches for all measurements. Child and caregiver age were each significantly associated with differences between remote and in-person caregiver height measurements; there were no significant associations with other measurement discrepancies. Remotely observed weight and height measurements using non-research grade equipment may be a feasible and valid approach for pediatric clinical trials in rural communities. However, researchers should carefully evaluate their measurement precision requirements and intervention effect size to determine whether remote height and weight measurements suit their studies. SARS-CoV-2 can infiltrate the lower respiratory tract, resulting in severe respiratory failure and a high death rate. Normally, the airway and alveolar epithelium can be rapidly reconstituted by multipotent stem cells after episodes of infection. Here, we analyzed published RNA-seq datasets and demonstrated that cells of four different lung epithelial stem cell types express SARS-CoV-2 entry factors, including Ace2. Thus, stem cells can be potentially infected by SARS-CoV-2, which may lead to defects in regeneration capacity partially accounting for the severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection and its consequences. To evaluate the clinical efficacy and meniscus healing rates of the arthroscopically assisted tendon graft fixation of the medial meniscus posterior root tears (MMPRTs), and to identify some independent risk factors correlated with meniscal root healing status. We conducted a retrospective study with 129 patients who received arthroscopically assisted tendon graft fixation of the MMPRTs between January 2018 and September 2021. Functional recovery of the knee was evaluated and meniscal root healing status was assessed. The associations between different clinical factors and meniscal root healing status were analyzed. 98 (76.0%) patients had complete meniscal root healing with a minimum 2-year follow-up, and the Lysholm score, international knee documentation committee score, and visual analogue scale score were significantly improved at final follow-up (P < 0.001; respectively). Binary logistic regression models analysis and the receiver operating characteristic curve was performed to detect independent risk factors for incomplete healing, and these results indicated that age (OR = 1.095, P = 0.039), body mass index (BMI) (OR = 1.259, P = 0.018), preoperative meniscus extrusion (OR = 5.181, P < 0.001) and varus degree (OR = 7.764, P < 0.001) were the independent risk factors correlated with incomplete healing in patients with repaired MMPRTs. In conclusion, the arthroscopically assisted tendon graft fixation of the MMPRTs can provide good clinical and radiological outcome. Additionally, we identified age > 37.5 years, BMI > 24.5 kg/m2, preoperative meniscus extrusion > 2.7 mm and varus degree > 3.3° as independent risk factors correlated with incomplete meniscus root healing status. Although no study has directly shown the relationship between bacterial vaginosis (BV) and homocysteine (HCY), we still found some association between these two through extensive literature and data analysis. BV score was calculated by Nugent's method, less than equal to 6 is negative and greater than equal to 7 is positive. This article describes interrelationships we mined from data extracted by NHANES regarding BV and HCY under multiple covariates. We used two cycles of NHANES 2001–2002 and 2003–2004 in our study. We included 2398 participants in our study who recently completed the interview and the MEC tests. By investigating the relationship between BV and HCY under multivariate conditions, multiple linear regression analysis was performed. These factors may have influenced the results, such as ethnicity, age, education level, body mass index (BMI), etc. Serum vitamin B12, ferritin, percentage of segmented centrioles, and number of segmented centrioles were selected as potential covariates in our study. We observed that both the coarse model and the two adjusted models showed a high correlation between HCY and BV, and the correlation was positive. In the coarse model, OR = 1.26, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.10, 1.44, P = 0.0018); HCY was positively correlated with BV (OR = 1.19, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.05, 1.34, P = 0.0121). Multiple linear regression analysis was used to investigate the connection between BV and HCY under multivariate settings. In patients with heart failure, guideline directed medical therapy improves outcomes and requires close patient monitoring. Pulmonary artery pressure monitors permit remote assessment of cardiopulmonary haemodynamics and facilitate early intervention that has been shown to decrease heart failure hospitalization. Pressure sensors implanted in the pulmonary vasculature are stabilized through passive or active interaction with the anatomy and communicate with an external reader to relay invasively measured pressure by radiofrequency. A body mass index > 35 kg/m2 and chest circumference > 165 cm prevent use due to poor communication. Pulmonary vasculature anatomy is variable between patients and the pulmonary artery size, angulation of vessels and depth of sensor location from the chest wall in heart failure patients who may be candidates for pressure sensors remains largely unexamined. The present study analyses the size, angulation, and depth of the pulmonary artery at the position of implantation of two pulmonary artery pressure sensors: the CardioMEMS sensor typically implanted in the left pulmonary artery and the Cordella sensor implanted in the right pulmonary artery. Thirty-four computed tomography pulmonary angiograms from patients with heart failure were analysed using the MIMICS software. Distance from the bifurcation of the pulmonary artery to the implant site was shorter for the right pulmonary artery (4.55 ± 0.64 cm vs. 7.4 ± 1.3 cm) and vessel diameter at the implant site was larger (17.15 ± 2.87 mm vs. 11.83 ± 2.30 mm). Link distance (length of the communication path between sensor and reader) was shorter for the left pulmonary artery (9.40 ± 1.43 mm vs. 12.54 ± 1.37 mm). Therefore, the detailed analysis of pulmonary arterial anatomy using computed tomography pulmonary angiograms may alter the choice of implant location to reduce the risk of sensor migration and improve readability by minimizing sensor-to-reader link distance. As both L- and D-BAIBA are increased with exercise, we sought to determine if circulating levels would be associated with physical performance. Serum levels of L- and D-BAIBA were quantified in 120 individuals (50% female) aged 20–85 years and categorized as either a "low" (LP), "average" (AP) or "high" performing (HP). Association analysis was performed using Spearman (S) and Pearson (P) correlation. Using Spearman correlation, L-BAIBA positively associated with (1) body mass index BMI (0.23) and total fat mass (0.19) in the 120 participants, (2) total fat mass in the 60 males (0.26), and (3) bone mineral density, BMD, (0.28) in addition to BMI (0.26) in the 60 females. In HP females, L-BAIBA positively associated with BMD (0.50) and lean mass (0.47). D-BAIBA was positively associated with (1) age (P 0.20) in the 120 participants, (2) age (P 0.49) in the LP females and (3) with gait speed (S 0.20) in the 120 participants. However, in HP males, this enantiomer had a negative association with appendicular lean/height (S − 0.52) and in the AP males a negative correlation with BMD (S − 0.47). No associations were observed in HP or AP females, whereas, in LP females, a positive association was observed with grip strength (S 0.45), but a negative with BMD (P − 0.52, S − 0.63) and chair stands (P − 0.47, S − 0.51). L-BAIBA may play a role in BMI and BMD in females, not males, whereas D-BAIBA may be a marker for aging and physical performance. This study was an attempt to examine the changes in serum levels of ghrelin and leptin after 12-weeks of aerobic training and gonadotropin releasing hormone agonist (GnRH) treatment in girls with central precocious puberty. Thirty girls (6–8 years old) with precocious puberty who had received Triptorelin were randomly divided in two groups (medication and medication + training). Fifteen age-matched healthy girls (without precocious puberty) were also included as the control group. The medication + training group submitted an aerobic training program for 3 days/week with 20–75 min per day and 45–75% of maximum heart rate for 12-weeks. Serum levels of leptin, ghrelin, cholesterol, triglycerides and body mass index (BMI) were determined at baseline and 48 h after the last training session. The results indicated that leptin significantly decreased (p = 0.001) and ghrelin significantly increased (p = 0.001) in the medication + training group but no significant difference was observed in the ghrelin (p = 1) and leptin (p = 0.78) in the medication group. Leptin to ghrelin ratio indicated a decrease in medicine + training group (p = 0.028). Ghrelin were negatively correlated with leptin and BMI. The data indicated that aerobic training increased ghrelin and reduced leptin and leptin to ghrelin ratio but GnRH agonist treatment had no effect on plasma leptin and ghrelin levels. Iron deficiency (ID) in very preterm infants born at 28–32 weeks of gestational age (GA) can lower mental and motor test scores. This study aimed to determine whether the rapid growth of very preterm infants might be associated with ID. Among 134 very preterm born between January 2014 and December 2020 at Jeonbuk National University Hospital and discharged home, 93 were included in this study. Rapid BMI increase (RBI) was defined as a z-score difference of > 1 standard deviation between birth and 8 months. ID occurred in 23 of 93 (24.7%) infants at 8 months of corrected age (CA). ID was more common in the RBI group (50%) than in the non-RBI group (18.7%). In the multivariate logistic regression corrected for GA, infants small for gestational age (SGA) (odds ratio [OR] 6.06, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.34–30.21) and RBI by z-score (OR 4.26, 95% CI 1.28–14.65) were identified as independent risk factors for ID at 8 months of CA. Large-artery atherosclerosis (LAA) is a leading cause of cerebrovascular disease. However, LAA diagnosis is costly and needs professional identification. Many metabolites have been identified as biomarkers of specific traits. However, there are inconsistent findings regarding suitable biomarkers for the prediction of LAA. In this study, we propose a new method integrates multiple machine learning algorithms and feature selection method to handle multidimensional data. Among the six machine learning models, logistic regression (LR) model exhibited the best prediction performance. The value of area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.92 when 62 features were incorporated in the external validation set for the LR model. In this model, LAA could be well predicted by clinical risk factors including body mass index, smoking, and medications for controlling diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia as well as metabolites involved in aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis and lipid metabolism. In addition, we found that 27 features were present among the five adopted models that could provide good results. If these 27 features were used in the LR model, an AUC value of 0.93 could be achieved. Our study has demonstrated the effectiveness of combining machine learning algorithms with recursive feature elimination and cross-validation methods for biomarker identification. The objectives of this study were to translate and validate the Persian version of the food involvement inventory (FII) and eating restriction questionnaire (ERQ) and to determine the measurement invariance based on gender, body mass index (BMI) status, and age. This cross-sectional study included 1100 Iranian adults. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to evaluate the construct validity of FII and ERQ. Convergent and discriminant validity, measurement invariance in gender, BMI and age, reliability including internal consistency, and stability were investigated for FII and ERQ. The results showed that the four-factor construct of the FII and the one-factor construct of the ERQ were 44.27% and 55.12% of the total variance, respectively. The factor loadings of all items were >.3 in both scales and none of the items were deleted. Fitting indices indicated that the four-factor construct of the FII and the one-factor construct of the ERQ had a good and acceptable fit among the Iranian adults. The Persian versions of the FII and ERQ, translated into Persian and localized according to international standards, had high construct, convergent and discriminant validity as well as high reliability. This study aims to (1) assess the distribution of variables within the population and the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) behavioural risk factors in patients, (2) identify target risk factor(s) for behaviour modification intervention, and (3) develop an analytical model to define cluster(s) of risk factors which could help make any generic intervention more targeted to the local patient population. Study patients with at least one CVD behavioural risk factor living in a rural region of the Scottish Highlands. The study used the STROBE methodology for cross-sectional studies. Demographic and clinical data of patients (n = 2025) in NHS Highlands hospital were collected at the point of admission for PCI between 04.01.2016 and 31.12.2019. Collected data distributions were analysed by CVD behavioural risk factors for prevalence, associations, and direction of associations. Cluster definition was measured by assignment of a unit score each for the overall level of prevalence and significance of associations, and general logistics modelling for direction and significance of the risk. The mean (SD) age was 69.47(± 10.93) years [95% CI (68.99–69.94)]. The key risk factors were hyperlipidaemia, hypertension, and elevated body mass index (BMI). Approximately 40% of the population have multiple risk factor counts of two. Analytical measures revealed a population risk factor cluster with elevated BMI [77.5% (1570/2025)] that is mostly either hyperlipidaemic [9.43%, co-eff. (17), P = 0.007] or hypertensive [22.72%, co-eff. (17), P = 0.99] as key risk factor clusters. Carefully modelled analyses revealed clustered risk associated with elevated BMI. This information would support a strategy for targeting risk factor clusters in novel interventions to improve implementation efficiency. Allee effects rely on the existence of mutually beneficial intraspecific interactions that increase individual fitness and per capita growth rate, as the number of individuals in a population or group increases. When the number of individuals falls below a given number, the success of a group or population drops. Social insects heavily rely on cooperation between individuals for various tasks such as foraging and breeding. In this study, we experimentally explored component Allee effects and the underlying mechanisms in colonies of the social wasp Vespula germanica. After the removal of workers, we counted the number of gynes produced, estimated the body mass index as a proxy of their quality, and registered the protein-food collected by foragers in colonies. Our research revealed a correlation between the decrease in worker population and a subsequent decrease in the production of gynes. However, the removal of workers did not impact the quality of the produced gynes or the quantity of protein-food collected by the colonies. These findings highlight the crucial role of the worker caste in the success of eusocial species and suggested an ability of workers to perform multiple tasks that enable colonies to respond to disturbances. Additionally, our study provides the first evidence of Allee effects at the colony level of V. germanica, with potential practical implications for managing this invasive species. Whereas lifestyle-related factors are recognized as snoring risk factors, the role of genetics in snoring remains uncertain. One way to measure the impact of genetic risk is through the use of a polygenic risk score (PRS). In this study, we aimed to investigate whether genetics plays a role in snoring after adjusting for lifestyle factors. Since the effect of polygenic risks may differ across ethnic groups, we calculated the PRS for snoring from the UK Biobank and applied it to a Korean cohort. We sought to evaluate the reproducibility of the UK Biobank PRS for snoring in the Korean cohort and to investigate the interaction of lifestyle factors and genetic risk on snoring in the Korean population. In this study, we utilized a Korean cohort obtained from the Korean Genome Epidemiology Study (KoGES). We computed the snoring PRS for the Korean cohort based on the UK Biobank PRS. We investigated the relationship between polygenic risks and snoring while controlling for lifestyle factors, including sex, age, body mass index (BMI), alcohol consumption, smoking, physical activity, and sleep time. Additionally, we analyzed the interaction of each lifestyle factor and the genetic odds of snoring. We included 3526 snorers and 1939 nonsnorers from the KoGES cohort and found that the PRS, a polygenic risk factor, was an independent factor for snoring after adjusting for lifestyle factors. In addition, among lifestyle factors, higher BMI, male sex, and older age were the strongest lifestyle factors for snoring. In addition, the highest adjusted odds ratio for snoring was higher BMI (OR 1.98, 95% CI 1.76–2.23), followed by male sex (OR 1.54, 95% CI 1.28–1.86), older age (OR 1.23, 95% CI 1.03–1.35), polygenic risks such as higher PRS (OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.08–1.29), drinking behavior (OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.03–1.35), late sleep mid-time (OR 1.17, 95% CI 1.02–1.33), smoking behavior (OR 0.99, 95% CI 0.82–1.19), and lower physical activity (OR 0.92, 95% CI 0.85–1.00). Our study identified that the UK Biobank PRS for snoring was reproducible in the Korean cohort and that genetic risk served as an independent risk factor for snoring in the Korean population. Aims were to datamine for high-frequency (near-neutral selection) pretermination-codon (PTC) single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs; n = 141) from a database with > 550,000 variants and analyze possible association with body mass index in a large Polish sample (n = 5757). As this result occurs in a near-neutral Mendelian setting, a drug targetting ERV3-1/ZNF117 might potentially provide considerable benefits with minimal side-effects. The FTO gene rs9936909 polymorphism is one of the well-documented single nucleotide polymorphisms in the context of increased risk of obesity, including in children. Few studies have tested the association of the FTO gene with cognitive functions. Deficits of "cool" executive functions (EFs) are considered a potential risk factor for excessive weight. The aims of our study were to investigate whether cool EFs are associated with the Body Mass Index, the Fat Mass Index and the risk of excess body mass and overfatness in neurotypically school-aged children, and whether the FTO gene polymorphism is involved in development of this possible association. The sample consisted of 553 children aged 6–12 years old. A body composition analysis, a neuropsychological assessment of EFs, and FTO polymorphism genotyping were performed in the children studied. The study found a significant association of an interference effect in theStroop Color-Word Interference Task and the risk of excessive body fatness, but not excessive body mass. There were no explicit associations between the FTO genotype and EFs deficits. Numerous environmental factors that influence myopia have been studied, but only few factors have been definitively identified. We examined factors influencing myopia using data from 2014 to 2020 physical examinations received from the Korean Military Manpower Administration. We used the Cochran–Armitage trend test to investigate the annual prevalence of myopia and high myopia. To determine risk factors for myopia, logistic regression was performed. The data of 2,215,126 19-year-old Korean men were examined. The myopia and high myopia prevalences showed significant annual increases; in 2020, these prevalences were 58.9% and 18.0%, respectively.
