Our objective was to examine the impact of elective neck dissection (END) on the prognosis of patients with cT2N0 maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma (MS-SCC) and to determine factors that predict the occurrence of occult metastasis in this patient population. A retrospective analysis was conducted using data from the SEER database. Patients with cT2N0 MS-SCC were included in the study and divided into two groups: those who received END and those who did not. The impact of END on disease-specific survival (DSS) and overall survival (OS) was assessed using propensity score matching. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to determine predictors for occult metastasis. A total of 180 patients were included in the study, with 40 cases receiving END. Following propensity score matching, patients treated with END and those without showed similar DSS and OS rates. Occult metastasis was observed in 9 patients, corresponding to a rate of 22.5%. High-grade tumors were independently associated with a higher risk of occult metastasis compared to low-grade tumors (hazard ratio 1.52, 95% confidence interval 1.17–2.00). cT2 MS-SCC carries an occult metastasis rate of 22.5%, with histologic grade being the primary determinant of occult metastasis. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a common complication in patients with lower extremity fractures. Once it occurs, it will seriously affect the quality of life and postoperative recovery of patients. Therefore, early prediction and prevention of DVT can effectively improve the prognosis of patients. This study constructed different machine learning models to explore their effectiveness in predicting DVT. Five prediction models were applied to the study, including Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model, Logistic Regression (LR) model, RandomForest (RF) model, Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) model, and Support Vector Machine (SVM) model. Afterwards, the performance of the obtained prediction models was evaluated by area under the curve (AUC), accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, F1 score, and Kappa. The prediction performances of the models based on machine learning are as follows: XGBoost model (AUC = 0.979, accuracy = 0.931), LR model (AUC = 0.821, accuracy = 0.758), RF model (AUC = 0.970, accuracy = 0.921), MLP model (AUC = 0.830, accuracy = 0.756), SVM model (AUC = 0.713, accuracy = 0.661). Sarcopenia is a disease characterized by decreased muscle mass and strength, affecting 20–70% of patients with cirrhosis, and is associated with poor prognosis, complications, and high mortality. At present, the epidemiological investigation of sarcopenia in patients with liver cirrhosis is relatively limited, and because of the differences in population characteristics, regions, diagnostic criteria and diagnostic tools, the prevalence of sarcopenia in various studies varies greatly. The definition of sarcopenia in this study adopted the criteria of the Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia (AWGS 2019), including muscle mass and muscle strength / physical performance. A total of 271 patients with liver cirrhosis were included in this cross-sectional study to explore the influencing factors of sarcopenia in patients with liver cirrhosis. The prevalence of sarcopenia was 27.7%, 27.3% in male and 28.4% in female. The results of binary logistic regression analysis showed that age, physical activity, BMI, mid-upper arm muscle circumference, hepatic encephalopathy, nutritional status, alkaline phosphatase, albumin and total cholesterol were significantly correlated with the occurrence of sarcopenia in patients with liver cirrhosis. After adjusting for the potential influencing factors, it was found that the correlation between age and sarcopenia was weakened (OR = 0.870, 95% CI 0.338–2.239). The current findings show that sarcopenia is common in patients with cirrhosis and is independently associated with age, physical activity, BMI, nutritional status, and albumin, and serum alkaline phosphatase and total cholesterol are associated with the development of sarcopenia. The relationship between Needle Track Bleeding (NTB) and the occurrence of postoperative immediate pneumothorax remains unclear. In our cross-sectional study, we conducted a retrospective collected of data from 674 consecutive patients who underwent CT-guided percutaneous transthoracic lung biopsies between 2019 and 2022. A logistic regression model was employed to explore the association between NTB and postoperative immediate pneumothorax, and restricted cubic spline curves was used to investigate the link and its explicit curve shape. A sensitivity analysis was performed by transforming the continuous NTB into categorical variable and calculated an E-value. A total of 453 participants (47.90% male) were included in our analysis. The postoperative immediate pneumothorax rate was 41.05% (186/453). We found a negative correlation between NTB and postoperative immediate pneumothorax (OR = 0.91, 95%CI 0.88–0.95) after adjusting for confounding factors. This relationship was nonlinear, with a key inflection point at NTB of 8 mm. No significant link was noted for NTB > 8 mm (OR = 0.98, 95%CI 0.95–1.02), while a protective association was observed for NTB ≤ 8 mm (OR = 0.74, 95%CI 0.66–0.81). Schistosomiasis is a chronic parasitic disease, which affects the quality of daily life of patients and imposes a huge burden on society. Hepatic fibrosis in response to continuous insult of eggs to the liver is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. However, the mechanisms of hepatic fibrosis in schistosomiasis are largely undefined. The purpose of our study is to detect the indicator to hepatic fibrosis in schistosomiasis. A total of 488 patients with chronic schistosomiasis japonica were enrolled in our study. The patients were divided into two groups according to liver ultrasound examination, which could indicate liver fibrosis of schistosomiasis with unique reticular changes. Logistic regression analysis showed that globulin, albumin/globulin, GGT levels and anti-Schistosoma IgG were independently associated with liver fibrosis in patients with schistosomiasis and IgG was the largest association of liver fibrosis (OR 2.039, 95% CI 1.293–3.213). We further compared IgG+ patients with IgG− patients. IgG+ patients (ALT 25 U/L, GGT 31 U/L) slightly higher than IgG− patients (ALT 22 U/L, GGT 26 U/L) in ALT and GGT. However, the fibrosis of liver in IgG+ patients (Grade II(19.7%), Grade III(7.3%)) were more severe than that in IgG− patients(Grade II(12.5%), Grade III(2.9%)) according to the grade of liver ultrasonography. Our results showed anti-Schistosoma IgG was independently associated with liver fibrosis in patients with chronic schistosomiasis japonica and patients with persistent anti-Schistosoma IgG might have more liver fibrosis than negative patients despite no obvious clinical signs or symptoms. The role played by serum folate in the progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of serum folate with NAFLD and advanced liver fibrosis (AHF). We conducted a cross-sectional study with 5417 participants using 2011–2018 NHANES data. Multiple logistic regression analysis and propensity score matching analysis were used to investigate the association of serum folate with NAFLD and AHF. In the completely adjusted model, participants in the high serum folate group had a 27% (OR 0.73, 95% CI 0.62, 0.87, p = 0.0003) and 53% (OR 0.47, 95% CI 0.35, 0.63, p < 0.0001) lower odds of suffering from NAFLD and AHF, respectively, compared to the low serum folate group. The similar results in propensity score matching further validated the above association. Stratified analysis showed that the negative correlation of serum folate with NAFLD and AHF demonstrated a broad consistency across populations. The results of this study indicate that higher serum folate level was associated with lower odds of NAFLD and AHF among US adults. Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is a severe condition that significantly increases the risk of sepsis. However, there is a notable dearth of research regarding the prediction of sepsis in PLA patients. The objective of this study was to develop and validate a prognostic nomogram for predicting sepsis in PLA patients. A total of 206 PLA patients were enrolled in our study, out of which 60 individuals (29.1%) met the Sepsis-3 criteria. Independent risk factors for sepsis were identified through univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Subsequently, a nomogram was developed based on age, positive blood culture, procalcitonin, alanine aminotransferase, blood urea nitrogen, and d-dimer. The nomogram demonstrated excellent calibration and discrimination, as evidenced by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) values of 0.946 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.912–0.979) and 0.980 (95%CI 0.951–1.000) in the derivation and validation cohorts, respectively. Furthermore, decision-curve analysis confirmed the clinical utility of the nomogram. This study aimed to help healthy adults achieve self-screening by analyzing the quantitative relationship between body composition index measurements (BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, etc.) and dyslipidemia and establishing a logical risk prediction model for dyslipidemia. We performed a cross-sectional study and collected relevant data from 1115 adults between November 2019 and August 2020. The least absolute shrinkage selection operator (LASSO) regression analysis was performed to select the best predictor variables, and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to construct the prediction model. In this study, a graphic tool including 10 predictor variables (a "nomogram," see the precise definition in the text) was constructed to predict the risk of dyslipidemia in healthy adults. A calibration diagram, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to verify the model's utility. Our proposed dyslipidemia nomogram showed good discriminative ability with a C-index of 0.737 (95% confidence interval, 0.70–0.773). In the internal validation, a high C-index value of 0.718 was achieved. DCA showed a dyslipidemia threshold probability of 2–45%, proving the value of the nomogram for clinical application for dyslipidemia. Geological hazards caused by strong earthquakes have caused continuous social and economic losses and destruction of the ecological environment in the hazard area, and are mostly manifested in the areas with frequent occurrence of geological hazards or the clustering of geological hazards. Considering the long-term nature of earthquakes and geological disasters in this region, this paper takes ten earthquake-stricken areas in Wenchuan earthquake zone as examples to collect shallow landslide data in 2010, combined with the spatial location of landslides and other factors. Kernel density estimation (KDE) method is used to analyze the spatial characteristics of shallow landslide. Taking the space of shallow landslide as the characteristic variable and fully considering the regulating factors of earthquake-induced landslide: terrain complexity, distance to river, distance to fault, distance to road, lithology, normalized vegetation difference index (NDVI) and ground peak acceleration (PGA) as independent variables, based on KDE and polynomial logistic regression (MLR), A quantitative model of shallow landslide in the earthquake area is constructed. The results show that: (1) PGA has the greatest impact on landslide in the study area. (2) Compared with the two-category logistic regression (two-category LR) model, the susceptibility map of landslide prediction results based on the KDE-MLR landslide susceptibility prediction model is more consistent with the actual situation. (3) The prediction accuracy of the model validation set is 70.7%, indicating that the landslide susceptibility prediction model based on KDE-MLR can effectively highlight the spatial characteristics of shallow landslides in 10 extreme disaster areas. This study aims to evaluate levels of D-dimer and serum lipid in different types of pancreatitis, and the relationship between D-dimer and dyslipidemia, especially triglyceride to HDL-C ratio (TG/HDL-C) in different types of pancreatitis. We analyzed the D-dimer and dyslipidemia levels in acute pancreatitis (AP), recurrent acute pancreatitis (RAP) and chronic pancreatitis (CP). A single-centered retrospective study was conducted on 1013 patients diagnosed with AP, RAP or CP. Only patients hospitalized within 24 h of onset were included, and 204 patients were enrolled in pancreatitis groups. 68 normal persons without pancreatitis, malignant diseases, pregnancy, or organ failure, who had health check-ups, were enrolled in the control group. Blood samples were taken within 24 h of admission. The relevant information on epidemiology and etiology was collected. D-dimer and serum lipid levels in different types of pancreatitis were analyzed. Furthermore, the area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used to estimate the validity of the predictor and to define optimal cut-off points for prediction. We found that D-dimer and TG/HDL-C ratio could distinguish mild AP (MAP) and non-MAP in AP and RAP patients. The D-dimer level was related to TG/HDL-C ratio and severity of pancreatitis, with the coefficient correlation of 0.379 and 0.427(p < 0.05), respectively. TG/HDL-C was related to D-dimer in different types of pancreatitis. Logistic regression analysis was conducted in the parameters at admission like alcohol abuse, dyslipidemia and coagulation disturbance in distinguishing AP and RAP groups from the control group, and the parameter like diabetes in RAP and CP groups significantly increased compared with that of the control group. The value of D-dimer level and TG/HDL-C ratio in predicting the severity of AP and RAP was confirmed but there was no significant difference between CP group and the control group. Elderly patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease are at a higher risk of developing. This study established an effective, individualised, early Hypertension risk-prediction model and proposed health management advice for patients over 60 years of age with NAFLD. Questionnaire surveys, physical examinations, and biochemical tests were conducted in 11,136 participants. The prevalence of NAFLD among 11,136 participants was 52.1%. Risk factors were screened using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator model and random forest model. A risk-prediction model was established using logistic regression analysis and a dynamic nomogram was drawn. The model was evaluated for discrimination, calibration, and clinical applicability using receiver operating characteristic curves, calibration curves, decision curve analysis, net reclassification index (NRI), and external validation. The results suggested that the model showed moderate predictive ability. The area under curve (AUC) of internal validation was 0.707 (95% CI: 0.688–0.727) and the AUC of external validation was 0.688 (95% CI: 0.672–0.705). The calibration plots showed good calibration, the risk threshold of the decision curve was 30–56%, and the NRI value was 0.109. Previous studies have shown that vitamin D3 may be a potential factor in insulin resistance, but the relationship between vitamin D3 and insulin resistance still remains controversial. At present, more research is needed to explore the relationship between vitamin D3 and insulin resistance. The samples from 2009 to 2018 in NHANES database were analyzed to Investigate the relationship and the potential mechanism. We performed a cross-sectional study of five periods in the NHANES database. Finally, 9298 participants were selected through strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, Multivariate logistic regression analysis and curve fitting were conducted to explore the relationship between vitamin D3 level and insulin resistance. Moreover, subgroup analysis was used to further prove the association. The results revealed that there was a strong association between vitamin D3 and insulin resistance (OR 0.82, 95% CI 0.72–0.93). However, subgroup analyses indicated that this correlation varied between individuals and races. There was a negative correlation between vitamin D3 level and insulin resistance, which provides a new proof for exploring the influencing factors of insulin resistance. The aim of the study was to assess the factors associated with periodic limb movements during sleep (PLMS) among obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) patients and identify the role of PLMS in patients with OSAS. 303 adult patients with OSAS were included in the study. All patients completed physical examination, Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS), and polysomnography. Diagnosis of PLMS was made if the periodic leg movements index (PLMI) was ≥ 15. Chi-square test, ANOVA, univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify factors associated with PLMS among OSAS patients. Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS 26.0 for mac. Statistically significant difference was considered if P value < 0.05. Among the 303 adult patients with OSAS, 98 patients had significant PLMS and the other 205 had no significant PLMS. Compared with OSAS patients without PLMS, OSAS patient with PLMS were older, had shorter REM duration and greater apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) (P < 0.05). The study suggests that PLMS is a matter of concern among patients with OSAS. A better understanding of the role of PLMS among OSAS patients could be useful in better recognition, intervention and treatment of OSAS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) has been recognized as a major player in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. This study determined the association between polymorphisms of MIF gene and acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The polymorphism of MIF gene (rs755622, rs1007888 and rs2096525) was analyzed in 1153 healthy controls and 699 ACS cases in Chinese Han population. Plasma MIF level was also measured in part of ACS patients (139/19.9%) and healthy controls (129/11.2%) randomly. Most participants including healthy controls and ACS patients carried rs755622 GG (63.1% vs. 56.7%) and CG genotypes (33.1% vs. 38.9%) and G allele of rs755622 (79.6% vs. 76.1%, respectively), while CC genotype (3.8% vs. 4.4%) and C allele (20.4% vs. 23.9%) carriers were the lowest. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that carriers with rs755622 C allele had a higher risk of ACS compared to other genotypes (AOR = 1.278, 95% CI: 1.042–1.567). In addition, CC genotype carriers had the highest plasma levels of MIF than other genotype carriers. The MIF level in ACS patients with CC genotype was significantly higher than ACS patients carrying GG genotype and healthy controls carrying 3 different genotypes of MIF gene rs755622. Our findings indicate that MIF gene rs755622 variant C allele is associated with increased risk of ACS. Identification of this MIF gene polymorphism may help for predicting the risk of ACS. A gradient boosting machine (GBM) was developed to model the susceptibility of debris flow in Sichuan, Southwest China for risk management. A total of 3839 events of debris flow during 1949–2017 were compiled from the Sichuan Geo-Environment Monitoring program, field surveys, and satellite imagery interpretation. In the cross-validation, the GBM showed better performance, with the prediction accuracy of 82.0% and area under curve of 0.88, than the benchmark models, including the Logistic Regression, the K-Nearest Neighbor, the Support Vector Machine, and the Artificial Neural Network. The elevation range, precipitation, and aridity index played the most important role in determining the susceptibility. In addition, the water erosion intensity, road construction, channel gradient, and human settlement sites also largely contributed to the formation of debris flow. The susceptibility map produced by the GBM shows that the spatial distributions of high-susceptibility watersheds were highly coupled with the locations of the topographical extreme belt, fault zone, seismic belt, and dry valleys. Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a common biliary malignancy. Despite continuing advances, novel indicators are urgently needed to identify patients with a poor prognosis. Several microRNAs (miRNAs) have been reported to be dysregulated in CCA tissues. The purpose of the current study was to explore the potential use of certain miRNAs as serum indicators. A total of 157 individuals, including103 CCA patients, were recruited into this study. We first used qRT-PCR to evaluate 5 CCA-related miRNAs in the serum of 95 individuals to identify significantly deregulated miRNAs. A logistic regression was used to analyse the potential variables influencing lymph node metastasis. Cox proportional hazards regression models were applied to determine the association between possible prognostic variables and overall survival (OS). We observed that decreased serum miR-106a confers a higher likelihood of lymph node metastasis [hazard ratio (HR) 18.3, 95% confidence interval (CI) 5.9-56.4, p < 0.01]. Additionally, lower circulating miR-106a levels (HR 5.1; 95% CI 2.2-11.8; p < 0.01) and non-radical surgery (HR 4.2; 95% CI 2.3-7.7; p < 0.01) were independent predictors for poor prognosis. Together, reduced expression of serum miR-106a is a powerful prognostic indicator for CCA patients.
