Abstract Tannic acid (TA) has been reported as an efficient plant-based compound with inhibitory activity against viruses and bacteria. The combination of TA with Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanostructures with ZnO is one of the most widely used nanoparticles for antimicrobial properties, have not yet fully elucidate especially their mechanisms of overall physicochemical and antimicrobial actions. Hence, to observe the influence of TA adsorption on ZnO, the investigations on the TA concentration and the effect of pH towards the physicochemical, optical and antimicrobial properties are demonstrated. The pure ZnO are synthesised via the chemical reduction method and the ZnO-TA nanostructures are further prepared using the dropwise methods to form variations of pH samples, which causes the formation of different mean particle size distribution, $${d}_{m}$$ d m . The findings reveal that the performance of physicochemical and optical properties of pure ZnO and ZnO-TA are different due to the wrapped layers of TA which change the charged surface of all the particles. The protonation reactions yield strong pH dependence (pH 3 and 5), with uptake performance becoming more dominant at higher TA concentration loading (pH 3). The detailed optical energy bandgap and Urbach energy that concluded the nanoparticle growth and disorder condition of produced particles are presented. For antimicrobial efficiency, ZnO-TA shows improved effectiveness in growth inhibitions of S. aureus 99.69% compared to pure ZnO nanostructure (99.39%). This work reveals that the TA concentration increases the overall performance, and the discussion gives added support to their potential performance related to the field of ZnO compound.

Abstract The aim of this study is to attain an extensive insight on the performance mechanism that is associated with the formation of Cu nanostructures- polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) thin film. The work presented Cu nanostructures synthesised via microwave-assisted method at different Cu precursor concentrations to observe the influence of different average particle diameter distribution, $${d}_{m}$$ d m of Cu nanostructures on the fabricated Cu nano thin film. The thin films of Cu nanostructures with a layer of PTFE were fabricated using the Meyer rod coating method. Evaluating the effect of Cu nanostructures at different $${d}_{m}$$ d m with overcoated PTFE layer showed that the resistance of fabricated thin film coated with PTFE is not significantly different from that of the uncoated thin film. The results implicate the influence of the PTFE layer towards the output performance, which can maintain a stable and constant resistance over time without affecting the original properties of pure Cu nanostructures, although some of the Cu nanostructures seep into the layer of PTFE. The novelty of this study lies in the effect of the intrinsic interaction between the layer of Cu nanostructure and PTFE, which modulate the performance, especially in photovoltaic cell application.

Abstract Chronic lead (Pb) poisoning is one of the greatest public health risks. The nervous system is the primary and most vulnerable target of Pb poisoning. Selenium (Se) has been shown to be a potential protection against heavy metal toxicity through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Therefore, the present study aimed to elucidate the possible protective role of Se in ameliorating the effects of Pb on rat cerebral structure by examining oxidative stress and markers of apoptosis. The rats were divided into 6 groups: control group, Se group, low Pb group, high Pb group, low Pb + Se group, high Pb + Se group. After the 4-week experiment period, cerebral samples were examined using biochemical and histological techniques. Pb ingestion especially when administered in high doses resulted in cerebral injury manifested by a significant increase in glial fibrillary acidic protein, malondialdehyde (MDA) marker of brain oxidation and DNA fragmentation. Moreover, Pb produced alteration of the normal cerebral structure and cellular degeneration with a significant reduction in the total number of neurons and thickness of the frontal cortex with separation of meninges from the cerebral surface. There was also a decrease in total antioxidant capacity. All these changes are greatly improved by adding Se especially in the low Pb + Se group. The cerebral structure showed a relatively normal histological appearance with normally attached pia and an improvement in neuronal structure. There was also a decrease in MDA and DNA fragmentation and an increase TAC. Selenium is suggested to reduce Pb-induced neurotoxicity due to its modulation of oxidative stress and apoptosis.

Abstract The need for a mild, low-cost, green environment that is able to produce exotic properties of output nanostructures is appealing nowadays. Employing these requirements, the copper (Cu)—based oxide nanostructures have been successfully synthesised via one-pot reaction using biocompatible natural polyphenol, tannic acid (TA) as both the reducing agent and stabiliser at 60, 70 and 80 °C. The structural and optical studies disclosed the effect of TA on the surface morphology, phase purity, elemental composition, optical microstrain and optical intrinsic energy of this mixed Cu2O and CuO nanostructures. The optically based method describes the comparative details of the multi-band gap in the presence of more than one element with overlapping spectra from the first-derivative absorbance curve $$\frac{\Delta E}{\Delta A}$$ Δ E Δ A and the exponential absorbance of Urbach tail energy $${E}_{U}$$ E U towards the conventional Tauc bandgap. The $$\frac{\Delta E}{\Delta A}$$ Δ E Δ A demonstrates that the pronounced effect of TA that Cu2O and CuO nanostructures creates much sensitive first-derivative bandgap output compared to the Tauc bandgap. The results also show that the $${E}_{U}$$ E U reduced as the temperature reaches 70 °C and then experienced sudden increase at 80 °C. The change in the pattern is parallel to the trend observed in the Williamson–Hall microstrain and is evident from the variations of the mean crystallite size $${D}_{m}$$ D m which is also a cause response to the change in temperature or pH. Therefore, the current work has elucidated that the structural and optical correlations on the as-synthesised Cu2O and CuO nanostructures in the presence of TA were the combined reaction of pH change and the ligand complexation reactions. The acquired results suggest a more comprehensive range of studies to further understand the extent relationship between the physical and optical properties of TA functionalised Cu-based oxide nanostructures.

Abstract COVID-19 may manifest as mild, moderate or severe disease with each grade of severity having its own features and post-viral implications. With the rising burden of the pandemic, it is vital to identify not only active disease but any post-recovery complications as well. This study was conducted with the aim of identifying the presence of post-viral symptomatology in patients recovered from mild COVID-19 disease. Presence or absence of 11 post-viral symptoms was recorded and we found that 8 of the 11 studied symptoms were notably more prevalent amongst the female sample population. Our results validate the presence of prolonged symptoms months after recovery from mild COVID-19 disease, particularly in association with the female gender. Hence, proving the post-COVID syndrome is a recognizable diagnosis in the bigger context of the post-viral fatigue syndrome.

The clinical relevance of DNA copy number alterations in chromosome 8 were investigated in oral cancers. The copy numbers of 30 selected genes in 33 OSCC patients were detected using the multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) technique. Amplifications of the EIF3E gene were found in 27.3% of the patients, MYC in 18.2%, RECQL4 in 15.2% and MYBL1 in 12.1% of patients. The most frequent gene losses found were the GATA4 gene (24.2%), FGFR1 gene (24.2%), MSRA (21.2) and CSGALNACT1 (12.1%). The co-amplification of EIF3E and RECQL4 was found in 9% of patients and showed significant association with alcohol drinkers. There was a significant association between the amplification of EIF3E gene with non-betel quid chewers and the negative lymph node status. EIF3E amplifications did not show prognostic significance on survival. Our results suggest that EIF3E may have a role in the carcinogenesis of OSCC in non-betel quid chewers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
