The prevalence of myopia in China has increased significantly in recent years, and the age of onset has become younger. Previous studies have indicated that various environmental factors can influence the development of school myopia. However, the environmental impacts on school myopia remains to be investigated. Discoveries in this field may contribute to better urban planning. This study involved 7,610 students (aged 6-12 years, 4084 boys and 3526 girls) from six primary schools in Wuhan, China. We evaluated the associations between school myopia and the environment by analyzing the geographical distribution of myopic children. We utilized the spatial statistical analysis model. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) risk coefficient for a 5,000-m radius around target schools was 0.379 (p = 0.008), while the NDVI risk coefficient for a 100-m radius around target schools was 0.241 (p = 0.047). The sports area risk coefficient for a 5,000-m radius around target schools was 0.234 (p = 0.016). We found that the specific buffers of NDVI and sports area around schools were associated with the prevalence of school myopia in schools, which worth further research to guide future initiatives on school myopia from an environmental perspective., Competing Interests: Declarations. The Chinese Grouse (Tetrastes sewerzowi), a rare endemic bird in China, belongs to the Galliformes order and Tetraonidae family. Despite extensive research, subspecies classification remains inadequate, especially in Pingwu, Sichuan. This study sequenced the mitochondrial genome of T. sewerzowi in Wanglang Nature Reserve, Sichuan, analyzed its structural features, and reconstructed phylogenetic relationships within Tetraonidae. The results indicate that the high conservation in mitochondrial genome structure and sequence between the T. sewerzowi from Wanglang, Sichuan and Lianhuashan, Gansu indicates that they may belong to the same subspecies. Furthermore, we observed significant differences in the length of the mitochondrial control region between T. sewerzowi and Tetrastes bonasia. Based on the phylogenetic tree constructed using a comprehensive mitochondrial dataset, we propose the reclassification of the Hazel Grouse genus into two independent genera: Tetrastes and Bonasa. This study is the first to sequence the mitochondrial genome of T. sewerzowi from Sichuan and compare it with populations from Gansu, providing important insights into the distribution pattern of T. sewerzowi subspecies and facilitating the formulation of effective conservation strategies., (© 2024. The Mu Us Sandy Land is a region characterized by wind-blown sand and soil erosion in northern China. To enhance the soil quality of this area, various organic materials were incorporated into the mixed soil at a volume ratio of 1:2 for feldspathic sandstone to sand. Culture was conducted in the field and under constant temperature conditions in laboratory culture chambers. Four treatments were established in the experiment, each calculated based on weight ratio and controlled (with no organic material added, CK); single application of straw (5% straw, P1); single application of biochar (5% biochar, P2); combined application of biochar and straw (5% biochar + 5% straw, P3). After 90 days of culture, soil samples were collected for analysis of various indicators such as soil aggregate particle size distribution, water stability of soil aggregates, mean weight diameter, mean geometric diameter, and fractal dimension using dry sieving and wet sieving methods. The objective is to establish a scientific basis and provide technical support for addressing the challenges associated with compound soil and implementing rational fertilization measures. The research results indicate that: (1) The quantity of aggregates > 0.25 mm under different treatments follows the order CK < P1 < P2 < P3, and the differences between treatments are significant (P < 0.05); (2) Soil water stability, mean weight diameter (MWD), mean geometric diameter (GMD), and fractal dimension of soil aggregates in compound soil with different organic material additions are superior to the control, and the effect of biochar on improving soil aggregates is better than that of corn straw. The combined application of both significantly improves the effect compared to single applications. In both culture modes, under wet sieving, the P3 treatment shows the highest MWD and GMD of soil aggregates, with an increase ranging from 3.45% to 85% and 4.55% to 38.46%, respectively, compared to other treatments. (3) The trend of fractal dimension among treatments is consistent: P3 < P2 < P1 < CK, and the differences between treatments are significant (P < 0.05). Moreover, there is a good negative correlation linear equation relationship between the fractal dimension (y) and WR > 0.25 (x) of compound soil, with a correlation coefficient of up to 0.9851. In conclusion, the incorporation of organic materials can effectively enhance the proportion of macroaggregates in compound soil consisting of Feldspathic sandstone and sand, thereby improving soil stability and erosion resistance. The optimal outcome is achieved through the combined application of biochar and straw. Indoor culture proves to be more effective than field culture, while wet sieving accurately reflects the structural characteristics of compound soil under both dry and wet sieving treatments., (© 2024. This study evaluated retinal and choroidal microvascular changes in night shift medical workers and its correlation with melatonin level. Night shift medical workers (group A, 25 workers) and non-night shift workers (group B, 25 workers) were recruited. The images of macula and optic nerve head were obtained by swept-source OCT-angiography. Vessel density of retina, choriocapillaris (CC), choriocapillaris flow deficit (CC FD), choroidal thickness (CT) and choroidal vascularity index (CVI) were measured. 6-sulfatoxymelatonin concentration was analyzed from the morning urine. CC FD and CVI were significantly decreased and CT was significantly increased in group A (all P < 0.05). 6-sulfatoxymelatonin concentration was significantly lower in group A (P < 0.05), which was significantly positively correlated with CC FD size (r = 0.318, P = 0.024) and CVI of the most regions (maximum r-value was 0.482, P < 0.001), and was significantly negatively associated with CT of all regions (maximum r-value was - 0.477, P < 0.001). In night shift medical workers, the reduction of melatonin was significantly correlated with CT thickening, CVI reduction and CC FD reduction, which suggested that they might have a higher risk of eye diseases. To investigate the boiling characteristics of flow outside the R410A tube under swaying conditions, this article conducts numerical simulation and experimental research on the flow boiling heat transfer of R410A outside a horizontal tube. The results show that when the swing frequency increased from 0.2 to 2 Hz, the sway amplitude is 0.03 m, the heat flux on the inner wall of the runner remains unchanged, and the mass flow rate increases from 85 to 170 kg/(m 2 ·s), which makes the heat transfer coefficient of the working fluid in the annular area increases significantly. Keeping the inlet mass flow rate unchanged, the heat flux on the inner wall of the flow channel increases from 25 to 35 kW/m 2 , the heat transfer coefficient of the working fluid in the annular area has also improved, but under high heat flux conditions, the working fluid is evaporated and dried, its heat transfer coefficient increases less than in low heat flux conditions. When the sway amplitude increases from 0.02 to 0.07 m, the sway frequency is 0.2 Hz and 2 Hz respectively, and the heat transfer coefficient of the working fluid shows a downward trend as a whole. This study explored the possible hemodynamic changes of the retina and choroid after horizontal strabismus surgery using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA). 32 eyes of 32 patients who underwent unilateral horizontal rectus muscle recession-resection surgery were included. SS-OCTA examinations were performed preoperatively and one week postoperatively. Several OCTA measurements were used, including vessel density (VD) of the superficial vascular complex (SVC), VD of the deep vascular complex (DVC), VD of the choriocapillaris (CC), choroidal vascular index (CVI) and choroidal thickness (CT). No significant change in VD of SVC, DVC, and CC was observed whereas CT increased significantly with CVI unchanged. Recession-resection surgery for horizontal strabismus seemed not to significantly influence the microcirculation of the retina and CC in the early postoperative period. However, choroidal thickening happened with a constant CVI probably due to the postoperative inflammation. Further studies are needed to investigate the long-term effects of unilateral recession-resection surgery for horizontal strabismus on the microcirculation of the retina and choroid., (© 2023. The multi-channel lidar has fast acquisition speed, large data volume, high dimension, and vital real-time storage, which makes it challenging to be met using the traditional lidar data storage methods. This paper presents a novel approach to storing the multi-channel lidar data based on the principle of the tree structure, the adjacency linked list, the binary data storage. In the proposed system, a tree structure is constructed by the four-dimensional structure of the multi-channel lidar data, and a data retrieval method of the multi-channel lidar data file is given. The results show that the proposed tree structure approach can save the storage capacity and improve the retrieval speed, which can meet the needs for efficient storage and retrieval of multi-channel lidar data, and improve the data storage utilization and the practicality of multi-channel lidar system., (© 2022. Reliable and accurate streamflow forecasting plays a vital role in the optimal management of water resources. To improve the stability and accuracy of streamflow forecasting, a hybrid decomposition-ensemble model named VMD-LSTM-GBRT, which is sensitive to sampling, noise and long historical changes of streamflow, was established. The variational mode decomposition (VMD) algorithm was first applied to extract features, which were then learned by several long short-term memory (LSTM) networks. Simultaneously, an ensemble tree, a gradient boosting tree for regression (GBRT), was trained to model the relationships between the extracted features and the original streamflow. The outputs of these LSTMs were finally reconstructed by the GBRT model to obtain the forecasting streamflow results. A historical daily streamflow series (from 1/1/1997 to 31/12/2014) for Yangxian station, Han River, China, was investigated by the proposed model. VMD-LSTM-GBRT was compared with respect to three aspects: (1) feature extraction algorithm; ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) was used. (2) Feature learning techniques; deep neural networks (DNNs) and support vector machines for regression (SVRs) were exploited. (3) Ensemble strategy; the summation strategy was used. The results indicate that the VMD-LSTM-GBRT model overwhelms all other peer models in terms of the root mean square error (RMSE = 36.3692), determination coefficient (R 2  = 0.9890), mean absolute error (MAE = 9.5246) and peak percentage threshold statistics (PPTS(5) = 0.0391%). Due to its poor clinical outcome, there is an urgent need to identify novel prognostic markers for stomach adenocarcinoma (STAD). Here, we aimed to explore the relationship between VGLL3 expression and clinico-pathological features, dendritic cells, macrophages, and prognosis of STAD. VGLL3 expression levels were significantly associated with histological grade, T stage, and TNM stage. VGLL3 levels and patient's age were also independent prognostic factors of the clinical outcome of STAD. In addition, VGLL3 was associated with the abundance of macrophages and dendritic cells in tumor infiltrates, of which only VGLL3 and macrophage counts were the independent prognostic factors of immune cell infiltration in the TIMER Database. Extracellular matrix receptor interaction, focal adhesion, pathways in cancer, MAPK, JAK STAT, and WNT signaling pathways were enriched in VGLL3 high-expressing datasets as determined by Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA), while DNA replication, glyoxylate, and dicarboxylate metabolism, glutathione metabolism, homologous recombination, and glycosylphosphatidylinositol gpi banchor biosynthesis were enriched in VGLL3 low-expressing datasets. Thus, VGLL3 is a novel prognostic biomarker of both the clinical outcome and immune infiltration in STAD, and may therefore be a promising therapeutic target.

This paper presents a micromachined monocrystalline silicon piezoresistive temperature sensor fabricated by a surface micromachining CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) process. The design of the temperature sensor is based on the structure of the multi-layer cantilever beam and the bimetallic effect. The temperature change of the cantilever beam is translated into the change of the piezoresistance's value. The test results show that the sensitivities of the sensors are 27.9 mV/°C with 100 Ω/▯ piezoresistance between -40 °C to 60 °C and 7.4 mV/°C with 400 Ω/▯ piezoresistance between -90 °C to 60 °C. The temperature sensor proposed in this paper can be used in radiosondes for its low operating temperature (as low as -90 °C), small size (below 1 mm 2 ) and low heat capacity.

Epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine-kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) are standard treatment for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation. However, EGFR mutation testing is not attainable in approximately 20% of patients. The current study examined intercalating and maintaining gefitinib treatment in stage IIIB/IV non-squamous NSCLC, never or former light smoking patients with unknown EGFR mutation status. Briefly, 219 patients who achieved stable disease (SD) with gemcitabine (1250 mg/m 2 ) plus carboplatin (5 AUC) were randomized at 1:1 ratio to continue chemotherapy (n = 110) or intercalating gefitinib (250 mg/day on days 15-25 of each cycle until disease progress (n = 109). Progression-free survival (PFS) was 9.7 vs. 4.2 month in the gefitinib vs. control arm (HR: 0.41, 95% CI: 0.31-0.56; P < 0.001). Overall survival (OS) was also longer in the gefitinib arm (20.1 vs. 15.4 months; HR: 0.68; 95% CI 0.48-0.97; P = 0.0323). Adverse events, including diarrhea, dermal reaction and thrombocytopenia, were more common in the gefitinib arm. In conclusion, intercalating and maintenance gefitinib treatment is a viable option for advanced NSCLC patients with unknown EGFR mutation status in subpopulations with high EFGR mutation rate.

To investigate the association of microRNA (miRNA) binding-site polymorphisms in the drug transporter genes with the efficacy of 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU)/capecitabine-based chemotherapy in colorectal cancer (CRC), 6 polymorphisms were determined in 432 CRC patients by using DNA sequencing method. The impacts of the polymorphisms on the miRNA-mediated regulation of gene expression were evaluated by using the methods including quantitative real-time PCR, western blotting, and luciferase reporter assays. The effects of miRNA on the intracellular concentration and cytotoxicity of 5-FU in CRC cells were measured by high performance liquid chromatography conjected tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) and MTT methods, respectively. Statistical analysis showed that a polymorphism rs3742106 in the 3'-UTR of ATP-binding cassette subfamily C member 4 (ABCC4) gene was significantly associated with the efficacy of 5-FU/capecitabine-based chemotherapy in CRC. The patients with T/T genotype had significantly higher response rate than those with G/G and G/T genotypes. The expression of ABCC4 was inhibited by miR-3190-5p through binding to the 3'-UTR of the ABCC4 gene. This regulatory role of miR-3190-5p was disrupted by rs3742106. Furthermore, we found that the intracellular concentration of 5-FU was elevated by miR-3190-5p, and consequently the sensitivity of CRC cells to 5-FU was also enhanced. Rs3742106 might be regarded as a genetic biomarker for individualized use of 5-FU and capecitabine in CRC.

Recent preliminary studies reported the in vitro tumor-promoting effects of long non-coding RNA urothelial carcinoma associated 1 (UCA1) in colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the in vivo functions and molecular mechanism of UCA1 in CRC remain unclear. Therefore, we investigated the detailed role and mechanism of UCA1 in CRC. We found that UCA1 was up-regulated in CRCs and negatively correlated with survival time in two CRC cohorts. Functional assays revealed the in vitro and in vivo growth-promoting function of UCA1 and revealed that UCA1 can decrease the sensitivity of CRC cells to 5-FU by attenuating apoptosis. Further mechanistic studies revealed that UCA1 could sponge endogenous miR-204-5p and inhibit its activity. We also identified CREB1 as a new target of miR-204-5p. The protein levels of CREB1 were significantly up-regulated in CRCs, negatively associated with survival time and positively correlated with the UCA1 expression. The present work provides the first evidence of a UCA1-miR-204-5p-CREB1/BCL2/RAB22A regulatory network in CRC and reveals that UCA1 and CREB1 are potential new oncogenes and prognostic factors for CRC.

Using an immunohistochemistry (IHC) based method, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) can be classified into germinal center B-cell (GCB) and non-GCB subtypes. However, the prognostic value of Hans algorithm was contradictory in the literature. Using IHC and fluorescence in situ hybridization, we analyzed the antibodies applied in Hans algorithm and other genetic factors in 601 DLBCL patients and prognostic value of Hans algorithm in 306 cases who were treated with chemoimmunotherapy. The results showed that patients with GCB subtype have better overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) than non-GCB cases. However, to some extent, double positive (CD10(+)MUM1(+), DP) and triple negative (CD10(-)Bcl6(-)MUM(-), TN) showed different clinical characteristics and prognosis to others that were assigned to the same cell-of-origin group. The DP group showed similar OS (median OS: both not reached, P = 0.3650) and PFS (median PFS: 47.0 vs. 32.7 months, P = 0.0878) with the non-GCB group while the TN group showed similar OS (median OS: both not reached, P = 0.9278) and PFS (median PFS: both not reached, P = 0.9420) with the GCB group. In conclusion, Recognition of specific entities in Hans algorithm could help us to accurately predict outcome of the patients and choose the best clinical management for them.
