Abstract Understanding the mechanical characteristics of rocks when subjected to direct tension is crucial for assessing the stability of rock formations. Within the scope of this research, a series of tests was conducted using Tage tuff to assess the deformation behavior and crack extension of rock under direct tension. The axial, lateral, and shear strain fields as well as crack propagation, localized deformation behavior, and failure mode of the rocks were analyzed using three-dimensional digital image correlation method. The results showed that the axial strain fields on the specimen surface were heterogeneous, with different locations and localization occurring in the pre-peak stage, which was similar to the evolution of shear strain, whereas the lateral strain only showed slight changes. The crack extension direction was inferred, indicating that both tensile and shear stress occurred in the tests. Furthermore, different stress–strain responses were observed for the inside and outside of the localized bands. Then, the surface patterns of specimen failure were scanned and analyzed to assess the failure mode and residual strength of the specimen under direct tensile stress. Finally, the results of direct tension, uniaxial compression, and Brazilian split tests for Tage tuff were compared, and the complete stress–strain curve of uniaxial tension (UT) was simulated using a nonlinear-variable-compliance constitutive equation. This study provides a deeper understanding into the damage behavior of rocks under direct tension.

Abstract Aiming at the problem of image classification with insignificant morphological structural features, strong target correlation, and low signal-to-noise ratio, combined with prior feature knowledge embedding, a deep learning method based on ResNet and Radial Basis Probabilistic Neural Network (RBPNN) is proposed model. Taking ResNet50 as a visual modeling network, it uses feature pyramid and self-attention mechanism to extract appearance and semantic features of images at multiple scales, and associate and enhance local and global features. Taking into account the diversity of category features, channel cosine similarity attention and dynamic C-means clustering algorithms are used to select representative sample features in different category of sample subsets to implicitly express prior category feature knowledge, and use them as the kernel centers of radial basis probability neurons (RBPN) to realize the embedding of diverse prior feature knowledge. In the RBPNN pattern aggregation layer, the outputs of RBPN are selectively summed according to the category of the kernel center, that is, the subcategory features are combined into category features, and finally the image classification is implemented based on Softmax. The functional module of the proposed method is designed specifically for image characteristics, which can highlight the significance of local and structural features of the image, form a non-convex decision-making area, and reduce the requirements for the completeness of the sample set. Applying the proposed method to medical image classification, experiments were conducted based on the brain tumor MRI image classification public dataset and the actual cardiac ultrasound image dataset, and the accuracy rate reached 85.82% and 83.92% respectively. Compared with the three mainstream image classification models, the performance indicators of this method have been significantly improved.

Abstract Cuproptosis is a newly defined form of programmed cell death that relies on mitochondria respiration. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play crucial roles in tumorigenesis and metastasis. However, whether cuproptosis-related lncRNAs are involved in the pathogenesis of diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) remains unclear. This study aimed to identify the prognostic signatures of cuproptosis-related lncRNAs in DLBCL and investigate their potential molecular functions. RNA-Seq data and clinical information for DLBCL were collected from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). Cuproptosis-related lncRNAs were screened out through Pearson correlation analysis. Utilizing univariate Cox, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) and multivariate Cox regression analysis, we identified seven cuproptosis-related lncRNAs and developed a risk prediction model to evaluate its prognostic value across multiple groups. GO and KEGG functional analyses, single-sample GSEA (ssGSEA), and the ESTIMATE algorithm were used to analyze the mechanisms and immune status between the different risk groups. Additionally, drug sensitivity analysis identified drugs with potential efficacy in DLBCL. Finally, the protein–protein interaction (PPI) network were constructed based on the weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). We identified a set of seven cuproptosis-related lncRNAs including LINC00294, RNF139-AS1, LINC00654, WWC2-AS2, LINC00661, LINC01165 and LINC01398, based on which we constructed a risk model for DLBCL. The high-risk group was associated with shorter survival time than the low-risk group, and the signature-based risk score demonstrated superior prognostic ability for DLBCL patients compared to traditional clinical features. By analyzing the immune landscapes between two groups, we found that immunosuppressive cell types were significantly increased in high-risk DLBCL group. Moreover, functional enrichment analysis highlighted the association of differentially expressed genes with metabolic, inflammatory and immune-related pathways in DLBCL patients. We also found that the high-risk group showed more sensitivity to vinorelbine and pyrimethamine. A cuproptosis-related lncRNA signature was established to predict the prognosis and provide insights into potential therapeutic strategies for DLBCL patients.

Abstract Coal is a non-renewable fossil energy source on which humanity relies heavily, and producing one ton of raw coal requires the discharge of 2–7 tons of mine water from the ground. The huge drainage task increases the cost of coal mining in coal mines significantly, so saving the drainage cost while guaranteeing the safe production of coal mines is a problem that needs to be solved urgently. Most of the fuzzy controllers used in the traditional dynamic planning methods applied to mine drainage are two-dimensional fuzzy controllers with limited control effect, so the traditional two-dimensional fuzzy controllers are improved by introducing the rate of change of gushing water to form a three-dimensional fuzzy controller with three-dimensional control of instantaneous section—water level—rate of change of gushing water, and at the same time, the optimized dynamic planning method is designed by combining the Avoiding Peak Filling Valley strategy and the optimal dy-namic planning method is used in conjunction with the un-optimized dynamic planning method. The optimized dynamic planning method is applied to the same coal mine water silo gushing water experiments; experimental comparison found that the pumping station system before the optimi-zation of the electricity consumed is 52,586 yuan/day, while after the optimization of the electricity consumed is reduced to 41,692 yuan/day, the cost per day consumed compared with the previous reduction of 20.69%, a year can be saved 3,969,730 yuan. Therefore, the mine water bin drainage method based on fuzzy control and Avoiding Peak Filling Valley strategy proposed in this paper can be used as an improvement method of the existing mine drainage method, which can further ex-pand the economic benefits of coal mines and realize safe production while realizing cost savings.

Abstract Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the first choice of vascular access in hemodialysis (HD) patients. However, the correlations between patient factors and the arteriovenous fistula patency remain unclear. Therefore, our study investigates the risk factors associated with AVF dysfunction in HD patients. A total of 233 end-stage renal disease (ESDR) patients who met the study inclusion criteria in the Nephrology Department of Hunan Provincial People’s Hospital between December 2020 and June 2022 were included in this study. The baseline demographic, clinical and laboratory parameters were collected at the time of AVF creation and analyzed. Of the 233 ESRD patients, 146 (62.7%) were male and the mean age was 56.11 ± 12.14 (21–82) years. The patients were followed for a median time of 14 months. Kaplan–Meier analysis showed a 6-, 12- and 24-month post-placement survival of 87.1%, 82.8% and 80.7%, respectively. Univariate Cox regression analysis revealed weight (HR, 1.03; P = 0.03) as a predictor for the loss of vascular access functionality. Abstract Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is a common tumor type. High recurrence rates remain an important factor affecting the survival and quality of life of advanced LSCC patients. We aimed to build a new nomogram and a random survival forest model using machine learning to predict the risk of LSCC progress. The study included 671 patients with AJCC stages III–IV LSCC. To develop a prognostic model, Cox regression analyses were used to assess the relationship between clinic-pathologic factors and disease-free survival (DFS). RSF analysis was also used to predict the DFS of LSCC patients. The ROC curve revealed that the Cox model exhibited good sensitivity and specificity in predicting DFS in the training and validation cohorts (1 year, validation AUC = 0.679, training AUC = 0.693; 3 years, validation AUC = 0.716, training AUC = 0.655; 5 years, validation AUC = 0.717, training AUC = 0.659). Random survival forest analysis showed that N stage, clinical stage, and postoperative chemoradiotherapy were prognostically significant variables associated with survival. The random forest model exhibited better prediction ability than the Cox regression model in the training cohort; however, the two models showed similar prediction ability in the validation cohort.

Abstract Light climate environment (LCE) has a significant impact on human health, behavioral characteristics, and the safety of life and property due to the high albedo of snow on the ground cover type, which in turn affects the regional climate and socio-economic development, but less relevant studies have been found. In this study, the effect of snow on daytime and nighttime light levels was quantified using comparative field observations and controlled experiments in artificial climate chambers, combined with analysis of variance and model fitting. The results of the study found that there was a significant difference between the presence and absence of snow on both daytime and nighttime light levels. During daytime, the ambient light level on the ground with snow is 5.68 times higher than without snow, an improvement of 12,711.06 Lux. At night, with moonlight, the nighttime illuminance with and without snow is 0.213 Lux and 0.01 Lux, respectively. When there is no moonlight, the snow has no significant effect on the light level. In addition, significant differences in LCE intensity with different snow depths, snow densities and black carbon (BC) pollution. At the same background light intensity, the LCE intensity varies significantly with increasing snow depth, snow density and BC pollution. The results reveals the quantitative impact of snow on LCE, providing scientific support for regional natural light energy use, human health and safety, urban environmental management and economic development.

Abstract With the ever-pressing challenges of societal ageing, robotic technologies for older people are increasingly portrayed as a solution for better independent living for longer. However, the application of human-following robots for elderly citizens has not yet been considered, and any prospective benefits offered by the technology for active ageing have previously been overlooked. This qualitative research aimed to explore older people’s needs and requirements towards the human-following robot through the reflexive thematic analysis of semi-structured interview data from 17 independent older adults, supported by a video-based demonstration of the robot. The results indicate that older people believed that human-following robot has the potential to provide social benefits to an independent older adult by encouraging walking trips and prompting social interaction with others in the community. Practical limitations and cost of the robot are barriers to adoption at present. The findings indicate that there is potential for human-following robots to support active ageing, through increasing opportunities for the social participation of an older adult, but further development of the robot is needed for this potential to be realised.

Abstract The accurate delineation of the spatial extent of cold regions provides the basis for the study of global environmental change. However, attention has been lacking on the temperature-sensitive spatial changes in the cold regions of the Earth in the context of climate warming. In this study, the mean temperature in the coldest month lower than − 3 °C, no more than 5 months over 10 °C, and an annual mean temperature no higher than 5 °C were selected to define cold regions. Based on the Climate Research Unit land surface air temperature (CRUTEM) of monthly mean surface climate elements, the spatiotemporal distribution and variation characteristics of the Northern Hemisphere (NH) continental cold regions from 1901 to 2019 are analyzed in this study, by adopting time trend and correlation analyses. The results show: (1) In the past 119 years, the cold regions of the NH covered on average about 4.074 × 107 km2, accounting for 37.82% of the total land area of the NH. The cold regions can be divided into the Mid-to-High latitude cold regions and the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau cold regions, with spatial extents of 3.755 × 107 km2 and 3.127 × 106 km2, respectively. The Mid-to-High latitude cold regions in the NH are mainly distributed in northern North America, most of Iceland, the Alps, northern Eurasia, and the Great Caucasus with a mean southern boundary of 49.48° N. Except for the southwest, the entire region of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, northern Pakistan, and most of Kyrgyzstan are cold regions. (2) In the past 119 years, the rates of change in the spatial extent of the cold regions in the NH, the Mid-to-High latitude, and the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau were − 0.030 × 107 km2/10 a, − 0.028 × 107 km2/10 a, and − 0.013 × 106 km2/10 a, respectively, showing an extremely significant decreasing trend. In the past 119 years, the mean southern boundary of the Mid-to-High latitude cold regions has been retreating northward at all longitudes. For instance, the mean southern boundary of the Eurasian cold regions moved 1.82° to the north and that of North America moved 0.98° to the north. The main contribution of the study lies in the accurate definition of the cold regions and documentation of the spatial variation of the cold regions in the NH, revealing the response trends of the cold regions to climate warming, and deepening the study of global change from a new perspective.

Abstract Because of the steep subduction of a highly concave slab, researchers have characterized megathrusts under the Marianas as among the coldest and curviest plate coupling interfaces in various circum-Pacific subduction zones. Seismic tomography indicates that the heterogeneous underlying plate varies markedly in its subduction angle, velocity, and flexure along the strike and dip, while their effects on the thermal structure and intraslab earthquake occurrence remain enigmatic. By incorporating the 3-D MORVEL velocity and state-of-the-art slab geometry into thermomechanical modeling, we estimated the 3-D subduction thermal state and hydrothermal regime below the Marianas. We find that (1) the concave slab geometry and the complexity of the intraslab velocity variation in the Marianas are associated with a heterogeneous along-strike thermal regime and a cold mantle wedge beneath the central Marianas; (2) amphibolitization and eclogitization of subducted oceanic crust cause variations in fluid pressure and fluid release from the subduction interface, which may influence the distribution of interface seismicity in the Mariana system; (3) the concentration of active hydrothermal vents in the trench > 8 km deep is accompanied by a large temperature gradient and subsequent remarkable slab dehydration in the southern Marianas; and (4) slab dehydration (> 0.02 wt%/km) from 30 to 80 km indicates notable fluid release and potential fluid migration in subduction channels, which may correspond to the large water flux at depth beneath the Marianas.

Abstract Segmentation of white matter tracts in diffusion magnetic resonance images is an important first step in many imaging studies of the brain in health and disease. Similar to medical image segmentation in general, a popular approach to white matter tract segmentation is to use U-Net based artificial neural network architectures. Despite many suggested improvements to the U-Net architecture in recent years, there is a lack of systematic comparison of architectural variants for white matter tract segmentation. In this paper, we evaluate multiple U-Net based architectures specifically for this purpose. We compare the results of these networks to those achieved by our own various architecture changes, as well as to new U-Net architectures designed automatically via neural architecture search (NAS). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to systematically compare multiple U-Net based architectures for white matter tract segmentation, and the first to use NAS. We find that the recently proposed medical imaging segmentation network UNet3+ slightly outperforms the current state of the art for white matter tract segmentation, and achieves a notably better mean Dice score for segmentation of the fornix (+ 0.01 and + 0.006 mean Dice increase for left and right fornix respectively), a tract that the current state of the art model struggles to segment. UNet3+ also outperforms the current state of the art when little training data is available. Additionally, manual architecture search found that a minor segmentation improvement is observed when an additional, deeper layer is added to the U-shape of UNet3+. However, all networks, including those designed via NAS, achieve similar results, suggesting that there may be benefit in exploring networks that deviate from the general U-Net paradigm.

Abstract Common thyroid diseases are hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroiditis, thyroid tumor and so on. Baidu is currently the most widely used online search tool in China, has developed an internet search trends collection and analysis tool called the Baidu Index. The aim of the present study was to understand the trend and characteristics of public’s online attention to thyroid diseases, and to explore the value of Baidu Index in monitoring online retrieval behavior of thyroid-related information. Taking the period from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2019 as the time range into consideration, we used the big data analysis tool of Baidu Index and took “thyroid nodules”, “thyroid cancer”, “thyroiditis” “hyperthyroidism” and “hypothyroidism” as the keywords, the data of “search index” and “media index” were recorded on a weekly basis, and all information were aggregated into quarterly and annual to generate the final data which was carried out for secondary analysis. Pearson correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation between the search index of keywords and the year. One-way Analysis of Variance was used to analyze the differences between search index and media index. Among the five keywords, thyroid nodule search index had the highest growth rate (640%), followed by thyroid cancer (298%). The media’s attention to thyroid diseases had been declining year by year. Unlike the public’s attention, the media index of hyperthyroidism was significantly higher than other keywords. Over the past nine years, the public's attention to thyroid-related diseases has been increasing gradually. Baidu Index is an effective tool to track the health information query behavior of Chinese internet users, which can provide a cost-effective supplement to traditional monitoring system.

Abstract To explore and compare the clinical control of three atomized inhalation budesonide (BUD) regimens for Chinese preschool children with recurrent wheezing using Test for Respiratory and Asthma Control (TRACK) scores. A total of 474 preschool children with positive Modified Asthma Predictive Index (mAPI) were randomly assigned to a daily group (initially given inhaled BUD 1 mg once a day and assessed every 4 weeks; if symptom were well controlled for 12 weeks, the dose was reduced to 25–50% of the previous dose until afinal dose of 0.25 mg once a day, maintained until 52 weeks), an intermittent high-dose group (1 mg twice daily for 7 days starting early during a predefined respiratory tract illness) and an intermittent medium-dose group (0.5 mg twice daily as soon as they contacted allergens or experienced nasal congestion, a runny nose, cough or other suspicious respiratory symptoms and continuing until symptoms were reduced or risk factors were absent for 3 days) for 52 weeks of treatment. The TRACK questionnaire was administered every 4 weeks. When TRACK scores were ≥ 80, symptoms were considered to be controlled. The average TRACK scores of the three groups after treatment were significantly higher than those before treatment (P 0.05). Te number of systemic glucocorticoid courses, urgent care visits for wheezing, and wheezing episodes before and after treatment were significantly different within each of the three groups (P 0.05). In clinical treatment of children, one of the three treatment options can be selected according to the specific situation case of mAPI- positive recurrent wheezing children.

Abstract Understanding human mobility is of great significance for sustainable transportation planning. Long-term travel delay change is a key metric to measure human mobility evolution in cities. However, it is challenging to quantify the long-term travel delay because it happens in different modalities, e.g., subway, taxi, bus, and personal cars, with implicated coupling. More importantly, the data for long-term multi-modal delay modeling is challenging to obtain in practice. As a result, the existing travel delay measurements mainly focus on either single-modal system or short-term mobility patterns, which cannot reveal the long-term travel dynamics and the impact among multi-modal systems. In this paper, we perform a travel delay measurement study to quantify and understand long-term multi-modal travel delay. Our measurement study utilizes a 5-year dataset of 8 million residents from 2013 to 2017 including a subway system with 3 million daily passengers, a 15 thousand taxi system, a 10 thousand personal car system, and a 13 thousand bus system in the Chinese city Shenzhen. We share new observations as follows: (1) the aboveground system has a higher delay increase overall than that of the underground system but the increase of it is slow down; (2) the underground system infrastructure upgrades decreases the aboveground system travel delay increase in contrast to the increase the underground system travel delay caused by the aboveground system infrastructure upgrades; (3) the travel delays of the underground system decreases in the higher population region and during the peak hours.

Abstract In order to adapt to the development of lightweight equipment, and further improve the wear resistance of ZL109 aluminum alloy, the influence of nickel-coated carbon nanotubes as an electrolyte additive on the preparation and wear resistance of microarc oxidation ceramic coatings on ZL109 aluminum alloy surface was investigated. In this work, 0.4 g/L, 0.8 g/L, 1.2 g/L, 1.6 g/L, and 2 g/L nickel-coated carbon nanotubes were added to the electrolyte respectively. The microarc oxidation ceramic coatings were prepared under bipolar pulse constant pressure mode, which were analyzed from the aspects of morphology, chemical composition, and wear resistance property. The results show that the nickel-coated carbon nanotubes possess a great influence on ceramic coatings. The morphology of ceramic coatings was significantly changed. In this work, the coating prepared by 1.2 g/L nickel-coated carbon nanotubes exhibits excellent wear resistance property.

Abstract The optimization work of a newly proposed 20-in. photomultiplier tube based on dynode and microchannel plates (Dynode-MCP-PMT) are conducted in this paper. Three-dimensional models are developed in CST STUDIO SUITE to systematically investigate the effects of the size and bias voltage of the two focusing electrodes, dynode and the glass envelop handle based on the Finite Integral Technique and Monte Carlo method. Results predict that the collection efficiency and the transit time spread of the optimized design are substantially improved which are 100% and 3.7 ns.

Abstract The vertical long shaft fire pump (VLSFP) is mainly used in fire-fighting places far away from land and lacking large amounts of water supply. The paper selected the XBC18-178-240LC3 model of VLSFP as the research object. First, the experimental–numerical hydraulic performance of the single-VLSFP was carried out, and then the hydraulic performance of the multi-VLSFP was analyzed by the same numerical simulation method as single-VLSFP. After that, three rotor models (Z4 model, Z5 model-original model and Z6 model) were designed by modeling software, connected by different length and number of the shaft section under the same total length of the intermediate shafts. Finally, the rotor’s strength and critical speed of three models were analyzed and checked via the CFD simulation and the Workbench software. The study mainly found: (1) Through the strength check of the impeller, maximum equivalent stress of the three models was less than the allowable stress of the rotor material, which indicated the structural design of them met the safety requirement; (2) Through the critical speed check of the shafting rotor, the working speed of the VLSFP was lower than 0.8 times the first-order critical speed of the three models, which indicated the rotor could avoid the resonance and the structure of the three models met the dynamic design requirement. According to the stress check of the impeller and the critical speed check of the shafting rotor, combining the time and labor cost when the VLSFP was installed and disassembled many times before and after the test or operation, the paper selected the Z4 model to be the optimal model, which could provide a theoretical support for the subsequent structure design optimization of the vertical long shaft fire pump.

Abstract Immune reactions in the tumor microenvironment are an important hallmark of cancer, and emerging immune therapies have been proven effective against several types of cancers. To investigate cancer genome-immune interactions and the role of immunoediting or immune escape mechanisms in cancer development, we analyzed 2834 whole genome and RNA sequencing datasets across 31 distinct tumor types with respect to key immunogenomic aspects and provided comprehensive immunogenomic profiles of pan-cancers. We found that selective copy number changes in immune-related genes may contribute to immune escape. Furthermore, we developed an index of the immunoediting history of each tumor sample based on the information of mutations in exonic regions and pseudogenes and evaluated the immunoediting history of each tumor. Our immuno-genomic analyses of pan-cancers have the potential to identify a subset of tumors with immunogenicity and diverse backgrounds or intrinsic pathways associated with their immune status and immunoediting history.

Abstract The successful implementation of heterosis in rice has significantly enhanced rice productivity, but the genetic basis of heterosis in rice remains unclear. To understand the genetic basis of heterosis in rice, main-effect and epistatic quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with heterosis for grain yield-related traits in the four related rice mapping populations derived from Xiushui09 (XS09) (japonica) and IR2061 (indica), were dissected using single nucleotide polymorphism bin maps and replicated phenotyping experiments under two locations. Most mid-parent heterosis of testcross F1s (TCF1s) of XS09 background introgression lines (XSILs) with Peiai64S were significantly higher than those of TCF1s of recombinant inbred lines (RILs) with PA64S at two locations, suggesting that the effects of heterosis was influenced by the proportion of introgression of IR2061’s genome into XS09 background. A total of 81 main-effect QTLs (M-QTLs) and 41 epistatic QTLs were identified for the phenotypic variations of four traits of RILs and XSILs, TCF1s and absolute mid-parent heterosis in two locations. Furthermore, overdominance and underdominance were detected to play predominant effects on most traits in this study, suggesting overdominance and underdominance as well as epistasis are the main genetic bases of heterosis in rice. Some M-QTLs exhibiting positive overdominance effects such as qPN1.2, qPN1.5 and qPN4.3 for increased panicle number per plant, qGYP9 and qGYP12.1 for increased grain yield per plant, and qTGW3.4 and qTGW8.2 for enhanced 1000-grain weight would be highly valuable for breeding to enhance grain yield of hybrid rice by marker-assisted selection.

Abstract This paper proposes a regionalization method for streamflow prediction in ungauged watersheds in the 7461 km2 area above the Gharehsoo Hydrometry Station in the Ardabil Province, in the north of Iran. First, the Fuzzy c-means clustering method (FCM) was used to divide 46 gauged (19) and ungauged (27) watersheds into homogenous groups based on a variety of topographical and climatic factors. After identifying the homogenous watersheds, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was calibrated and validated using data from the gauged watersheds in each group. The calibrated parameters were then tested in another gauged watershed that we considered as a pseudo ungauged watershed in each group. Values of R-Squared and Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) were both ≥ 0.70 during the calibration and validation phases; and ≥ 0.80 and ≥ 0.74, respectively, during the testing in the pseudo ungauged watersheds. Based on these metrics, the validated regional models demonstrated a satisfactory result for predicting streamflow in the ungauged watersheds within each group. These models are important for managing stream quantity and quality in the intensive agriculture study area.

Abstract The microstructure of the spinal cord in syringomyelia has not been well studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the microstructure of the cervical cord in patients with syringomyelia using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and to investigate the association between DTI parameters and the size of the syrinx cavity. Thirty patients with syringomyelia and 11 age-matched controls were included in this study. DTI and T1/T2-weighted MRI were used to estimate spinal microstructure. The patients were divided into a clinical symptom group (group A) and a non-clinical symptom group (group B) according to ASIA assessments. The fractional anisotropy (FA) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values (mm2/s) were measured and compared between patients and controls. Correlation between FA/ADC and the size of the syrinx cavity was examined with a bivariate analysis. FA values were lower (P 0.05). FA values and ADC values at all cervical levels were not significantly different either in controls or outside of the syrinx (all P > 0.05). Abstract The sound velocities of water in the Hugoniot states are investigated by laser shock compression of precompressed water in a diamond anvil cell. The obtained sound velocities in the off-Hugoniot region of liquid water at precompressed conditions are used to test the predictions of quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) simulations and the SESAME equation-of-state (EOS) library. It is found that the prediction of QMD simulations agrees with the experimental data while the prediction of SESAME EOS library underestimates the sound velocities probably due to its improper accounting for the ionization processes.

Abstract Glypican-3 (GPC3) is a cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycan that is being evaluated as an emerging therapeutic target in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). GPC3 has been shown to interact with several extracellular signaling molecules, including Wnt, HGF, and Hedgehog. Here, we reported a cell surface transmembrane protein (FAT1) as a new GPC3 interacting protein. The GPC3 binding region on FAT1 was initially mapped to the C-terminal region (Q14517, residues 3662-4181), which covered a putative receptor tyrosine phosphatase (RTP)-like domain, a Laminin G-like domain, and five EGF-like domains. Fine mapping by ELISA and flow cytometry showed that the last four EGF-like domains (residues 4013-4181) contained a specific GPC3 binding site, whereas the RTP domain (residues 3662-3788) and the downstream Laminin G-2nd EGF-like region (residues 3829-4050) had non-specific GPC3 binding. In support of their interaction, GPC3 and FAT1 behaved concomitantly or at a similar pattern, e.g. having elevated expression in HCC cells, being up-regulated under hypoxia conditions, and being able to regulate the expression of EMT-related genes Snail, Vimentin, and E-Cadherin and promoting HCC cell migration. Taken together, our study provides the initial evidence for the novel mechanism of GPC3 and FAT1 in promoting HCC cell migration.

Abstract The impact of 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak on mental health was of widespread concern recently. The present study aimed to exam sleep quality and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and potential influence factors in the first phases of COVID-19 massive outbreak in China. A snowball sampling technique was used and a total of 2027 Chinese participated in the present study. Demographic information, epidemic area contact history, sleep quality and PTSS data were collected with an internet-based cross-sectional survey. Results suggested that 59.7% participants were not fully satisfied with their sleep quality, and 50.9% participants had various degrees of short sleep duration problems. 44.1% and 33.0% participants had sleep disturbance and sleep onset latency problems. Also, the prevalence of PTSS reached 4.7% in the self-rating survey. Epidemic area contact history affected PTSS and latency onset of sleep under the influence of COVID-19. Epidemic area contact history and sleep quality had interaction effects on PTSS. The present study was one of the first to evaluate acute psychological responses and possible risk factors during the peak of COVID-19 in China and results indicate that keeping good sleep quality in individuals with pandemic exposure experiences is a way to prevent PTSS.

Abstract Photodetectors based on three dimensional organic–inorganic lead halide perovskites have recently received significant attention. As a new type of light-harvesting materials, formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) is known to possess excellent optoelectronic properties even exceeding those of methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3). To date, only a few photoconductor-type photodetectors based on FAPbI3 single crystals and polycrystalline thin films in a lateral structure have been reported. Here, we demonstrate low-voltage, high-overall-performance photodiode-type photodetectors in a sandwiched geometry based on polycrystalline α-FAPbI3 thin films synthesized by a one-step solution processing method and post-annealing treatment. The photodetectors exhibit a broadband response from the near-ultraviolet to the near-infrared (330–800 nm), achieving a high on/off current ratio of 8.6 × 104 and fast response times of 7.2/19.5 μs. The devices yield a photoresponsivity of 0.95 AW−1 and a high specific detectivity of 2.8 × 1012 Jones with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) approaching 182% at −1.0 V under 650 nm illumination. The photodiode-type photodetectors based on polycrystalline α-FAPbI3 thin films with superior performance consequently show great promise for future optoelectronic device applications.

Abstract Animal mitochondrial genomes usually exhibit conserved gene arrangement across major lineages, while those in the Hymenoptera are known to possess frequent rearrangements, as are those of several other orders of insects. Here, we sequenced two complete mitochondrial genomes of Trichogramma japonicum and Trichogramma ostriniae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Trichogrammatidae). In total, 37 mitochondrial genes were identified in both species. The same gene arrangement pattern was found in the two species, with extensive gene rearrangement compared with the ancestral insect mitochondrial genome. Most tRNA genes and all protein-coding genes were encoded on the minority strand. In total, 15 tRNA genes and seven protein-coding genes were rearranged. The rearrangements of cox1 and nad2 as well as most tRNA genes were novel. Phylogenetic analysis based on nucleotide sequences of protein-coding genes and on gene arrangement patterns produced identical topologies that support the relationship of (Agaonidae + Pteromalidae) + Trichogrammatidae in Chalcidoidea. CREx analysis revealed eight rearrangement operations occurred from presumed ancestral gene order of Chalcidoidea to form the derived gene order of Trichogramma. Our study shows that gene rearrangement information in Chalcidoidea can potentially contribute to the phylogeny of Chalcidoidea when more mitochondrial genome sequences are available.

Abstract Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is the most sensitive region to global warming on Earth. Qinghai Lake, the largest lake on the plateau, has experienced evident area variation during the past several decades. To quantify the area changes of Qinghai Lake, a satellite-based survey based on Landsat images from the 1980s to 2010s has been performed. In addition, meteorological data from all the seven available stations on Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau has been analyzed. Area of Qinghai Lake shrank ~2% during 1987–2005, and then increased ~3% from 2005–2016. Meanwhile, the average annual temperature increased 0.319 °C/10 y in the past 50 years, where the value is 0.415 °C/10 y from 2005–2016. The structural equation modeling (SEM) shows that precipitation is the primary factor influencing the area of Qinghai Lake. Moreover, temperature might be tightly correlated with precipitation, snow line, and evaporation, thereby indirectly causes alternations of the lake area. This study elucidated the significant area variation of water body on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau under global warming since 1980s.

Abstract To facilitate developing rice varieties tolerant to salt stress, a panel of 208 rice mini-core accessions collected from 25 countries were evaluated for 13 traits associated with salt tolerance (ST) at the germination and seedling stages. The rice panel showed tremendous variation for all measured ST traits and eight accessions showing high levels of ST at either and/or both the germination and seedling stages. Using 395,553 SNP markers covering ~372 Mb of the rice genome and multi-locus mixed linear models, 20 QTN associated with 11 ST traits were identified by GWAS, including 6 QTN affecting ST at the germination stage and 14 QTN for ST at the seedling stage. The integration of bioinformatic with haplotype analyses for the ST QTN lets us identify 22 candidate genes for nine important ST QTN (qGR3, qSNK1, qSNK12, qSNC1, qSNC6, qRNK2, qSDW9a, qSST5 and qSST9). These candidate genes included three known ST genes (SKC1, OsTZF1 and OsEATB) for QTN qSNK1 qSST5 and qSST9. Candidate genes showed significant phenotypic differences in ST traits were detected between or among 2–4 major haplotypes. Thus, our results provided useful materials and genetic information for improving rice ST in future breeding and for molecular dissection of ST in rice.

Abstract Extrachromosomal circular DNAs (eccDNAs) have been reported in most eukaryotes. However, little is known about the cell-free eccDNA profiles in circulating system such as blood. To characterize plasma cell-free eccDNAs, we performed sequencing analysis in 26 libraries from three blood donors and negative controls. We identified thousands of unique plasma eccDNAs in the three subjects. We observed proportional eccDNA increase with initial DNA input. The detected eccDNAs were also associated with circular DNA enrichment efficiency. Increasing the sequencing depth in an additional sample identified many more eccDNAs with highly heterogenous molecular structure. Abstract Renal biopsy has been widely recommended in clinic to determine the histological patterns of kidney disease. To prevent bleeding complications, patients should routinely stop anticoagulants prior to renal biopsy. However, patients with kidney disease are susceptible to thromboembolisms, particularly in those with severe hypoalbuminemia. This study was designed to investigate the application of serum D-dimer as a predictor for thrombotic events after renal biopsy. 400 consecutive native renal biopsies were prospectively included in this 2-month follow-up study. Abstract Migration of olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) is critical for development of olfactory system and essential for neural regeneration after OEC transplantation into nerve injury site. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of directional migration of OECs remain unclear. In this study, we found that in migrating OECs, phosphorylated myosin light chain (p-MLC, active myosin II) displayed a polarized distribution, with the leading front exhibiting higher than soma and trailing process. Over-expression of GFP-MLC significantly reduced OEC migration. Moreover, decreasing this front-to-rear difference of myosin II activity by the frontal application of a ML-7 (myosin II inhibitors) gradient induced the collapse of leading front and reversed soma translocation of OECs, whereas, increasing this front-to-rear difference of myosin II activity by the rear application of a ML-7 or BDM gradient or the frontal application of a Caly (myosin II activator) gradient accelerated the soma translocation of OECs. Finally, myosin II as a downstream signaling of repulsive factor Slit-2 mediated the reversal of soma translocation induced by Slit-2. Taken together, these results suggest that the polarized distribution of active myosin II regulates the directional migration of OECs during spontaneous migration or upon to extracellular stimulation such as Slit-2.

Abstract A reduction in the particle size is expected to improve the properties and increase the application potential of high-entropy alloys. Therefore, in this study, a novel sol–gel autocombustion technique was first used to synthesize high-entropy alloys. The average grain size of the prepared nanocrystalline CoCrCuNiAl high-entropy alloys showed was 14 nm with an excellent and uniform dispersion, exhibiting a distinct magnetic behavior similar to the superparamagnetic behavior. We show that the metal nitrates first form (Co,Cu,Mg,Ni,Zn)O high-entropy oxides, and then in situ reduce to CoCrCuNiAl high-entropy alloys by the reducing gases, and the chelation between citric acid and the metal ions and the in situ chemical reactions are the dominant reaction mechanisms. We demonstrate that the sol–gel autocombustion process is an efficient way to synthesize solid solution alloys eluding the restriction of a high mixing entropy.

Abstract Two filtering-response power dividers embedded substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) filter are presented in this paper. By employing different SIW resonators, single- and dual-band filtering response are achieved, respectively. The even- and odd-mode method and the coupled resonator theory are applied to analyze the presented power dividers. In addition, a novel isolation technique using multiple isolation resistors is proposed to improve the output isolation performance of the filtering-response power divider with multiple resonators. To verify the proposed circuits, the single- and dual-band filtering-response power dividers are designed, fabricated and measured. Reasonable agreement between the simulated and measured results is achieved. Moreover, the measured output isolation of the fabricated dual-band filtering-response power divider with multiple resonators is about 20 dB, which demonstrates the theoretical predication.
