Abstract Lidamycin (LDM) has been confirmed to have a strong anti-pancreatic cancer effect and can affect the mitochondrial function of pancreatic cancer cells. Mitofusin-2 (Mfn2) is located in the outer membrane of mitochondria, and Mfn2 is currently believed to play a role in cancer inhibition in pancreatic cancer. In order to explore whether the anti-pancreatic cancer effect of LDM is related to Mfn2-mediated mitophagy, Bioinformatics and in vitro cell experiments are used for experimental research. The experimental results demonstrated that Mfn2 is correlated with mitochondrial autophagy in pancreatic cancer. Lidamycin can increase the expression of Mfn2 in pancreatic cancer and affect the process of EMT, affect the level of reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial membrane potential, and increase the expression of mitochondrial autophagy marker proteins BNIP3L and Beclin1. These results demonstrate that Mfn2 affects mitophagy in pancreatic cancer cells by regulating the expression of Mfn2.

Abstract Detection of printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) defects is crucial for improving the efficiency of PCBA manufacturing. This paper proposes PCBA-YOLO, a YOLOv5-based method that can effectively increase the accuracy of PCBA defect detection. First, the spatial pyramid pooling module with cross-stage partial structure is replaced in the neck network of YOLOv5 to capture the resolution features at multiple scales. Second, large kernel convolution is introduced in the backbone network to obtain larger effective receptive fields while reducing computational overhead. Finally, an SIoU loss function that considers the angular cost is utilized to enhance the convergence speed of the model. In addition, an assembled PCBA defect detection dataset named PCBA-DET is created in this paper, containing the corresponding defect categories and annotations of defect locations. The experimental results on the PCB defect dataset demonstrate that the improved method has lower loss values and higher accuracy. Evaluated on the PCBA-DET dataset, the mean average precision reaches 97.3 $$\%$$ % , achieving a real-time detection performance of 322.6 frames per second, which considers both the detection accuracy and the model size compared to the YOLO series of detection networks. Abstract Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is a urinary disorder that affects youthful to middle-aged men most frequently. It has been revealed that Th17/Treg imbalance is a crucial factor in the pathophysiological mechanisms behind this disease. However, this imbalance’s mechanisms are unknown. In the experimental autoimmune prostatitis (EAP) mouse model, the NLRP3 inflammasome was turned on, IL-1β levels went up. Moreover, there exists a discernible positive association between the upsurge in IL-1β and the perturbation of Th17/Treg equilibrium. Additionally, we have revealed that IL-1β plays a vital role in promoting the differentiation of Naïve CD4+ T cells into the Th17 cells and enhances the conversion of Treg cells into Th17 cells. Further studies revealed that IL-1β promotes STAT3 phosphorylation, which is what causes Treg cells to become Th17 cells. All data strongly suggest that the NLRP3 inflammatory influence Th17 cell development and the conversion of Treg cells into Th17 cells through IL-1β, disrupting the Th17/Treg balance and exacerbating EAP inflammation. In this article, we provide new theories for the pathogenesis of CP/CPPS and propose new prevention and therapy methods.

Abstract Invasive pests reduce biodiversity and ecosystem service functions, thereby leading to economic and also agricultural losses. Banana skipper (Erionota torus Evans), red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus), and coconut caterpillar (Opisina arenosella Walker) are invasive insect pests in the palm-growing regions and they have had serious consequences for the planting of bananas (Musa nana), palms (Trachycarpus fortune) and coconut (Cocos nucifera). Based on screened occurrence data, the present research utilized Maximum Entropy model (Maxent) to simulate the distribution dynamics of these three invasive insects in China, under current and future climate (2050s, 2070s, 2090s) in two shared socio-economic pathways (SSPs: 126 and 585) of the newly released coupled model intercomparison project phase6 (CMIP6). The results show that: (1) Under current and future climate conditions, all model groups exhibited an AUC value exceeding 0.92, which shows that the model prediction results are very good;(2) The suitable habitat area of E. torus Evans remains relatively stable with some expansion in the SSP126 of 2090s and some contraction in the SSP585 of 2090s. The suitable habitat area of R. ferrugineus showed an overall contraction, with substantial contraction in the SSP585 of 2090s.The suitable habitat area of O. arenosella has an overall expansion, with the most pronounced expansion in the SSP585 of 2070s; (3) The current centroid of suitable habitats for R. ferrugineus and E. torus Evans is located in Guangxi Province and wholely shift toward the south direction under future climate. The centroid of suitable habitats for O. arenosella is currently located in the northeastern maritime area of Hainan Province and will shift toward the north direction under future climate; (4) Temperature, precipitation and Human disturbance factors (Population density and Human influence index) were crucial variables for describing the distribution of the three species. For E. torus Evans in particular, percentage contributions of Population density was up to 31.4, which is only 0.1 different from ranked first Bio19 (Precipitation of the coldest quarter). The dynamics of habitats of these three species and the correlating driver factors proposed in this work provide essential insights into future spatial management of the three invasive insects in China. Our work is necessary and timely in identifying newly areas at high risk of expansion of the three invasive insects in the future, then suggesting strategic control measures to prevent their spread, and finally providing scientific evidence for the early prevention and rapid response to the three invasive insects.

Abstract Wogonin is a natural flavone compound from the plant Scutellaria baicalensis, which has a variety of pharmacological activities such as anti-cancer, anti-virus, anti-inflammatory, and immune regulation. However, the potential mechanism of wogonin remains unknown. This study was to confirm the molecular mechanism of wogonin for acute monocytic leukemia treatment, known as AML-M5. The potential action targets between wogonin and acute monocytic leukemia were predicted from databases. The compound-target-pathway network and protein-protein interaction network (PPI) were constructed. The enrichment analysis of related targets and molecular docking were performed. The network pharmacological results of wogonin for AML-M5 treatment were verified using the THP-1 cell line. 71 target genes of wogonin associated with AML-M5 were found. The key genes TP53, SRC, AKT1, RELA, HSP90AA1, JUN, PIK3R1, and CCND1 were preliminarily found to be the potential central targets of wogonin for AML-M5 treatment. The PPI network analysis, GO analysis and KEGG pathway enrichment analysis demonstrated that the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway was the significant pathway in the wogonin for AML-M5 treatment. The antiproliferative effects of wogonin on THP-1 cells of AML-M5 presented a dose-dependent and time-dependent manner, inducing apoptosis, blocking the cell cycle at the G2/M phase, decreasing the expressions of CCND1, CDK2, and CyclinA2 mRNA, as well as AKT and p-AKT proteins. The mechanisms of wogonin on AML-M5 treatment may be associated with inhibiting cell proliferation and regulating the cell cycle via the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.

Abstract The High Average Utility Itemset Mining (HAUIM) technique, a variation of High Utility Itemset Mining (HUIM), uses the average utility of the itemsets. Historically, most HAUIM algorithms were designed for static databases. However, practical applications like market basket analysis and business decision-making necessitate regular updates of the database with new transactions. As a result, researchers have developed incremental HAUIM (iHAUIM) algorithms to identify HAUIs in a dynamically updated database. Contrary to conventional methods that begin from scratch, the iHAUIM algorithm facilitates incremental changes and outputs, thereby reducing the cost of discovery. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art iHAUIM algorithms, analyzing their unique characteristics and advantages. First, we explain the concept of iHAUIM, providing formulas and real-world examples for a more in-depth understanding. Subsequently, we categorize and discuss the key technologies used by varying types of iHAUIM algorithms, encompassing Apriori-based, Tree-based, and Utility-list-based techniques. Moreover, we conduct a critical analysis of each mining method's advantages and disadvantages. In conclusion, we explore potential future directions, research opportunities, and various extensions of the iHAUIM algorithm.

Abstract Liver fibrosis, as a consequence of chronic liver disease, involves the activation of hepatic stellate cell (HSC) caused by various chronic liver injuries. Emerging evidence suggests that activation of HSC during an inflammatory state can lead to abnormal accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM). Investigating novel strategies to inhibit HSC activation and proliferation holds significant importance for the treatment of liver fibrosis. As a member of the doublecortin domain-containing family, doublecortin domain containing 2 (DCDC2) mutations can lead to neonatal sclerosing cholangitis, but its involvement in liver fibrosis remains unclear. Therefore, this study aims to elucidate the role of DCDC2 in liver fibrosis. Our findings revealed a reduction in DCDC2 expression in both human fibrotic liver tissues and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced mouse liver fibrotic tissues. Furthermore, exposure to transforming growth factor beta-1(TGF-β1) stimulation resulted in a dose- and time-dependent decrease in DCDC2 expression. The overexpression of DCDC2 inhibited the expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and type I collagen alpha 1 (Col1α1), and reduced the activation of HSC stimulated with TGF-β1. Additionally, we provided evidence that the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway was involved in this process, wherein DCDC2 was observed to inhibit β-catenin activation, thereby preventing its nuclear translocation. Furthermore, our findings demonstrated that DCDC2 could attenuate the proliferation and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-like processes of HSC. In vivo, exogenous DCDC2 could ameliorate CCl4-induced liver fibrosis. In summary, DCDC2 was remarkably downregulated in liver fibrotic tissues of both humans and mice, as well as in TGF-β1-activated HSC. DCDC2 inhibited the activation of HSC induced by TGF-β1 in vitro and fibrogenic changes in vivo, suggesting that it is a promising therapeutic target for liver fibrosis and warrants further investigation in clinical practice.

Abstract This study aimed to assess the feasibility and safety of robot-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) for resecting benign tumors of the cervicothoracic junction. Between 2017 and 2021, a total of 54 patients with benign cervicothoracic junction tumors were included. Among them, 46 underwent RATS while 8 underwent open surgery. Using a propensity score based on four variables (age, sex, comorbidity, and tumor size). The outcomes compared included short-term outcomes such as blood loss, as well as long-term outcomes including respiratory function and patients' postoperative health-related quality of life. No operative deaths occurred in this study. Abstract This study aimed to examine the correlation between post-traumatic growth (PTG), spiritual well-being (SWB), perceived social support (PSS), and demographic and clinical factors in Chinese gynecological cancer patients. Through convenience sampling, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 771 adult patients with gynecological cancer. The European Organization for Research and Treatment for Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Spiritual Well-being 32 (EORTC QLQ-SWB32), Post-traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) were used to measure SWB, PTG, and PSS. A Multiple Linear Regression Model was used to determine the possible factors contributing to PTG. The subscale with the highest centesimal score in the PTGI was the Appreciation of Life Scale, and the lowest was New Possibility. Abstract A precise forecast of the need for blood transfusions (BT) in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a crucial step toward the implementation of precision medicine. To achieve this goal, we utilized supervised machine learning (SML) techniques to establish a predictive model for BT requirements in THA patients. Additionally, we employed unsupervised machine learning (UML) approaches to identify clinical heterogeneity among these patients. In this study, we recruited 224 patients undergoing THA. To identify factors predictive of BT during the perioperative period of THA, we employed LASSO regression and the random forest (RF) algorithm as part of supervised machine learning (SML). Using logistic regression, we developed a predictive model for BT in THA patients. Furthermore, we utilized unsupervised machine learning (UML) techniques to cluster THA patients who required BT based on similar clinical features. The resulting clusters were subsequently visualized and validated. We constructed a predictive model for THA patients who required BT based on six predictive factors: Age, Body Mass Index (BMI), Hemoglobin (HGB), Platelet (PLT), Bleeding Volume, and Urine Volume. Before surgery, 1 h after surgery, 1 day after surgery, and 1 week after surgery, significant differences were observed in HGB and PLT levels between patients who received BT and those who did not. The predictive model achieved an AUC of 0.899. Employing UML, we identified two distinct clusters with significantly heterogeneous clinical characteristics. Age, BMI, PLT, HGB, bleeding volume, and urine volume were found to be independent predictors of BT requirement in THA patients. The predictive model incorporating these six predictors demonstrated excellent predictive performance. Furthermore, employing UML enabled us to classify a heterogeneous cohort of THA patients who received BT in a meaningful and interpretable manner.

Abstract With the rapid development of AI and big data mining technologies, computerized medical decision-making has become increasingly prominent. The aim of high-utility pattern mining (HUPM) is to discover meaningful patterns in medical databases that contribute to maximizing the utility from the perspective of diagnosis. However, HUPM pays less attention to the interpretability and explainability of these patterns in medical decision-making scenarios. This paper proposes a novel algorithm called the Improved fuzzy high-utility pattern mining (IF-HUPM) to address this problem. First, the paper applies a fuzzy preprocessing method to divide the fuzzy intervals of a medical quantitative data set, which enhances the fuzziness and interpretability of the data. Next, in the process of IF-HUPM, both fuzzy tree and list structures are employed to calculate fuzzy high-utility values. By combining the characteristics of the one-stage and two-stage algorithms of HUPM, an adaptive-phase Fuzzy HUPM hybrid frame is proposed. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed IF-HUPM algorithm enhances both accuracy and efficiency and the mining process requires less time and space on average.

Abstract Metastasis of hepatoblastoma (HB) is a key factor that impairs the prognosis and treatment of children. The suppressor of cytokine signaling 2 (SOCS2) is a classical negative feedback protein that regulates cytokine signal transduction and has been known to be downregulated in several tumor, but the molecular mechanisms of its involvement in HB metastasis are unknown. We found that SOCS2 was a gene down-regulated in hepatoblastoma and associated with HB metastasis through bioinformatics. The qRT-PCR, Western blot and IHC showed that SOCS2 was significantly lower in HB tissues. Clinicopathological correlation analysis revealed that low expression of SOCS2 was significantly correlated with tumor metastasis (P = 0.046) and vascular invasion (P = 0.028), associated with poor prognosis. Overexpression of SOCS2 inhibited the migration and invasion of hepatoblastoma cells, while knockdown of SOCS2 expression promoted these malignant phenotypes. In vivo studies revealed overexpression of SOCS2 inhibited the formation of lung metastasis. Up-regulation of SOCS2 in HB cell inhibited EMT and JAK2/STAT5. Conversely, down-regulation of SOCS2 promoted EMT and JAK2/STAT5. The addition of the JAK2 inhibitor Fedratinib partially reversed the effects of si-SOCS2 on HB cells. SOCS2 may inhibit the migration and invasion of HB cells by inhibiting the JAK2/STAT5 signaling pathway. These results may provide guiding significance for the clinical treatment of HB.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate efficient diagnostic markers and molecular mechanisms of atherosclerosis and to analyze the role of immune infiltration through bioinformatics analysis. Expression profile datasets (GSE28829 and GSE43292) of patients with atherosclerosis and healthy controls were downloaded from the GEO database. Glutamine (GLN) metabolism-associated genes were obtained from the Molecular Signatures Database (MSigDB). The limma package in R was used to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Significant modules were filtered using Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA). MSigDB sets were subjected to Gene Set Enrichment Analysis and Gene Set Variation Analysis. The biological functions of DEGs were examined using Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses. STRING and Cytoscape software were used to identify hub genes and functional modules through protein–protein interaction (PPI) network analysis. The xCell software was adopted to assess the composition patterns of immune and stromal cells. Correlation analyses were performed for key genes and immune cell subtypes. We identified 308 DEGs and GLN-associated genes. Functional enrichment analysis showed that these genes were strongly enriched in muscle contract, muscle tissue development, cutile fiber, mycobacterial, and actin binding. Enriched KEGG pathways comprised dilated cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and the cAMP signaling pathway. In the PPI network analysis, 27 genes were identified as hub genes. The area under the curve (AUC) values of 27 biomarkers were relatively high, indicating high diagnostic values. The atherosclerosis group exhibited a markedly higher degree of infiltration than the control group. This study identified 27 GLN-associated genes as potential biomarkers for the diagnosis of atherosclerosis. It provides a new perspective on immune responses that facilitates exploration of the molecular mechanisms of atherosclerosis.

Abstract Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) causes severe inflammation in various infectious diseases, such as bloodstream infections, respiratory and urinary tract infections, which leads to high mortality. Polydatin (PD), an active ingredient of Yinhuapinggan granule, has attracted worldwide attention for its powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and antibacterial capacity. However, very little is known about the effect of PD on CRKP. In this research, we evaluated the inhibitory effects of PD on both the bacterial level and the bacterial-cell co-culture level on anti-biofilm and efflux pumps and the other was the inhibitory effect on apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) after CRKP induction. Additionally, we validated the mechanism of action by qRT-PCR and western blot in human lung epithelial cells. Firstly, PD was observed to have an inhibitory effect on the biofilm of CRKP and the efflux pump AcrAB-TolC. Mechanically, CRKP not only inhibited the activation of Nuclear Factor erythroid 2-Related Factor 2 (Nrf-2) but also increased the level of ROS in cells. These results showed that PD could inhibit ROS and activate Nrf-2 production. Together, our research demonstrated that PD inhibited bacterial biofilm formation and efflux pump AcrAB—TolC expression and inhibited CRKP-induced cell damage by regulating ROS and Nrf-2-regulated antioxidant pathways.

Abstract This research aims to fabricate plane-type substrates for evaluating the axon behaviors of neuronal cells in vitro toward the development of brain-on-chip models by applying the functions of diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin film deposition, which helped to eliminate the costly and time-consuming lithography process by utilizing a shadow mask. The DLC thin films were partially deposited on stretched polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates covered with a metal mask by the plasma chemical vaper deposition method, and using the substrates culture teats with human neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y) were performed. Three patterns of interconnection structures of axons were created on the substrates with disordered and regular linear wrinkle structures with several μm size formed by the depositions. The patterns were characterized by the structure that the aggregations of axons formed on the linear DLC thin film deposited areas were separately placed in regular intervals and connected each other by plenty of axons, which were individually taut in a straight line at about 100 to over 200 μm in length. The substrates expected of uses for evaluation of axon behaviors are available without fabricating guiding grooves by conventional soft lithographic methods requiring multiple stages and their treating times.

Abstract The DOHaD theory suggests that adverse environmental factors in early life may lead to the development of metabolic diseases including diabetes and hypertension in adult offspring through epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation. Folic acid (FA) is an important methyl donor in vivo and participates in DNA replication and methylation. The preliminary experimental results of our group demonstrated that lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 50 µg/kg/d) exposure during pregnancy could lead to glucose metabolism disorders in male offspring, but not female offspring; however, the effect of folic acid supplementation on glucose metabolism disorders in male offspring induced by LPS exposure remains unclear. Therefore, in this study, pregnant mice were exposed to LPS on gestational day (GD) 15–17 and were given three doses of FA supplementation (2 mg/kg, 5 mg/kg, or 40 mg/kg) from mating to lactation to explore its effect on glucose metabolism in male offspring and the potential mechanism. This study confirmed that FA supplementation of 5 mg/kg in pregnant mice improved glucose metabolism in LPS-exposed offspring during pregnancy by regulating gene expression.

Abstract Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major risk factor to develop epilepsy and cognitive impairments. Neuropeptide oxytocin has been previously evidenced to produce antiepileptic effects. However, the involvement of central oxytocin in TBI-induced epileptic status and cognitive dysfunctions is not fully elucidated. In this study, we aim to investigate the role of oxytocin on a TBI model followed by seizure induction to clarify whether the epilepsy and cognitive deficits could be mitigated by oxytocin. TBI was established by weight drop and epileptic behaviors were induced by pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) injection in mice. Moreover, oxytocin was microinjected into the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) to observe the effects on the epilepsy and cognition. The blood–brain barrier (BBB) function and the neuroinflammation were measured by Evans Blue staining and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, respectively. Mice exposed to TBI demonstrate increased vulnerability to PTZ-mediated seizures and cognitive disturbances with a decrease in peripheral and brain oxytocin levels. Additionally, TBI reduces oxytocin, disrupts the BBB permeability and triggers neuroinflammation in mPFC in PTZ-treated mice. Intra-mPFC oxytocin simultaneously mitigates epilepsy and cognitive impairments. Finally, oxytocin restores BBB integrity and reduces mPFC inflammation in PTZ-treated TBI mice. These findings showed that intra-mPFC oxytocin suppressed the seizure vulnerability and cognitive deficits in TBI mice. The normalization of BBB integrity and inhibition of neuroinflammation may be involved in the antiepileptic and cognition-improved effects of oxytocin, suggesting that targeting inflammatory procedure in mPFC may decrease the risk to develop epilepsy and cognitive impairments in individuals previously experienced TBI.

Abstract The variation of brain functions as healthy ageing has been discussed widely using resting-state brain imaging. Previous conclusions may be misinterpreted without considering the effects of global signal (GS) on local brain activities. Up to now, the variation of GS with ageing has not been estimated. To fill this gap, we defined the GS as the mean signal of all voxels in the gray matter and systematically investigated correlations between age and indices of GS fluctuations. What’s more, these tests were replicated with data after hemodynamic response function (HRF) de-convolution and data without noise regression as well as head motion data to verify effects of non-neural information on age. The results indicated that GS fluctuations varied as ageing in three ways. First, GS fluctuations were reduced with age. Second, the GS power transferred from lower frequencies to higher frequencies with age. Third, the GS power was more evenly distributed across frequencies in ageing brain. These trends were partly influenced by HRF and physiological noise, indicating that the age effects of GS fluctuations are associated with a variety of physiological activities. These results may indicate the temporal dedifferentiation hypothesis of brain ageing from the global perspective.

Abstract Cell cycle associated protein 1 (Caprin1) is an RNA-binding protein that can regulate the cellular post-transcriptional response to stress. It is a component of both stress granules and neuronal RNA granules and is implicated in neurodegenerative disease, synaptic plasticity and long-term memory formation. Our previous work suggested that Caprin1 also plays a role in the response of the cochlea to stress. Here, targeted inner ear-deletion of Caprin1 in mice leads to an early onset, progressive hearing loss. Auditory brainstem responses from Caprin1-deficient mice show reduced thresholds, with a significant reduction in wave-I amplitudes compared to wildtype. Whilst hair cell structure and numbers were normal, the inner hair cell-spiral ganglion neuron (IHC-SGN) synapse revealed abnormally large post-synaptic GluA2 receptor puncta, a defect consistent with the observed wave-I reduction. Unlike wildtype mice, mild-noise-induced hearing threshold shifts in Caprin1-deficient mice did not recover. Oxidative stress triggered TIA-1/HuR-positive stress granule formation in ex-vivo cochlear explants from Caprin1-deficient mice, showing that stress granules could still be induced. Taken together, these findings suggest that Caprin1 plays a key role in maintenance of auditory function, where it regulates the normal status of the IHC-SGN synapse.

Abstract Endometriosis (EMs) is one of the most frequent diseases of reproductive-age women and is characterized by the growth of endometrial tissues beyond the uterus. The enhanced proliferative and migratory potential of endometrial stromal cells (ESCs) plays an important role in the progression of EMs. Mounting studies have demonstrated that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) exert an important role in regulating the development and progression of EMs. Given the aberrant expression of lncRNA ADAMTS9-AS1 in ectopic endometrium (ecEM), we investigated the biological effect of ADAMTS9-AS1 on ESC proliferation and migration and explored the underlying mechanism. The current data showed that ADAMTS9-AS1 expression was significantly upregulated in ecEM compared with eutopic endometrium (euEM) in patients with EMs and in a murine model of EMs. Functionally, ADAMTS9-AS1 knockdown in ectopic ESCs (EESCs) decreased cell viability and migration, whereas ADAMTS9-AS1 overexpression in normal ESCs (NESCs) enhanced cell viability and migration. More importantly, the effect of ADAMTS9-AS1 inhibition on decreasing ESC viability was significantly blocked by ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1, a ferroptosis inhibitor), and ADAMTS9-AS1 overexpression repressed erastin (a ferroptosis activator)-induced cell death. Furthermore, the regulatory role of ADAMTS9-AS1 in ferroptosis was defined and evidenced by increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and malonyl dialdehyde (MDA) content and decreased expression of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) after ADAMTS9-AS1 inhibition. Mechanistically, ADAMTS9-AS1 functioned as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) by sponging miR-6516-5p to derepress the expression of GPX4, the critical repressor of ferroptosis. Taken together, these results demonstrate that upregulated ADAMTS9-AS1 accelerates ESC proliferation and migration by regulating miR-6516-5p/GPX4-dependent ferroptosis and may be a potential target for the treatment of EMs.

Abstract Autologous liver transplantation (ALT) to cure end-stage hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (HAE) requires that hepatobiliary surgeons understand the invasion of intrahepatic structure and adjacent tissues or organs. Triphase contrast-enhanced CT of the liver has been widely used for diagnosis and preoperative evaluation of HAE. Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction allows for accurate measurement of remnant liver volume (RLV). The objective of the study was to evaluate value of triphase contrast-enhanced CT together with 3D reconstruction in preoperative evaluation of indications for ALT in patients with end-stage HAE. This cohort include twenty-one consecutive patients with end-stage HAE, who preoperatively underwent triphase enhanced CT together with 3D reconstruction for ALT. To depict the indications, the 2D image data were reviewed statistically focusing on porta hepatis invasion, retrohepatic vena cava (RHVC) involvement and degrees of intrahepatic vessel invasion, and the 3D reconstruction was performed to obtain ratio of RLV to standard liver volume (SLV). The results showed that 95.24% patients (20/21) had porta hepatis invasion. When lesions located in right liver lobe, porta hepatis invasion occurred most commonly in the second and third porta hepatis (7/10), whereas the first, second and third porta hepatis were most commonly invaded by lesions in the right and caudate / left medial liver lobes (7/11) (P

Abstract Levosimendan and dobutamine are extensively used to treat sepsis-associated cardiovascular failure in ICU. Nevertheless, the role and mechanism of levosimendan in patients with sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy remains unclear. Moreover, previous studies on whether levosimendan is superior to dobutamine are still controversial. More importantly, these studies did not take changes (before-after comparison to the baseline) in quantitative parameters such as ejection fraction into account with the baseline level. Here, we aimed to determine the pros and cons of the two medicines by assessing the changes in cardiac function and blood lactate, mortality, with the standardized mean difference used as a summary statistic. Relevant studies were obtained by a thorough and disciplined literature search in several notable academic databases, including Google Scholar, PubMed, Cochrane Library and Embase until November 2020. Outcomes included changes in cardiac function, lactic acid, mortality and length of hospital stay. A total of 6 randomized controlled trials were included in this study, including 192 patients. Abstract Insertions and deletions (Indels) represent one of the major variation types in the human genome and have been implicated in diseases including cancer. To study the features of somatic indels in different cancer genomes, we investigated the indels from two large samples of cancer types: invasive breast carcinoma (BRCA) and lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). Besides mapping somatic indels in both coding and untranslated regions (UTRs) from the cancer whole exome sequences, we investigated the overlap between these indels and transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs), the key elements for regulation of gene expression that have been found in both coding and non-coding sequences. Compared to the germline indels in healthy genomes, somatic indels contain more coding indels with higher than expected frame-shift (FS) indels in cancer genomes. LUAD has a higher ratio of deletions and higher coding and FS indel rates than BRCA. More importantly, these somatic indels in cancer genomes tend to locate in sequences with important functions, which can affect the core secondary structures of proteins and have a bigger overlap with predicted TFBSs in coding regions than the germline indels. The somatic CDS indels are also enriched in highly conserved nucleotides when compared with germline CDS indels.

Abstract Prostate cancer (PCa) is a heterogeneous group of tumors with variable clinical courses. In order to improve patient outcomes, it is critical to clinically separate aggressive PCa (AG) from non-aggressive PCa (NAG). Although recent genomic studies have identified a spectrum of molecular abnormalities associated with aggressive PCa, it is still challenging to separate AG from NAG. To better understand the functional consequences of PCa progression and the unique features of the AG subtype, we studied the proteomic signatures of primary AG, NAG and metastatic PCa. 39 PCa and 10 benign prostate controls in a discovery cohort and 57 PCa in a validation cohort were analyzed using a data-independent acquisition (DIA) SWATH–MS platform. Proteins with the highest variances (top 500 proteins) were annotated for the pathway enrichment analysis. Functional analysis of differentially expressed proteins in NAG and AG was performed. Data was further validated using a validation cohort; and was also compared with a TCGA mRNA expression dataset and confirmed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) using PCa tissue microarray (TMA). 4,415 proteins were identified in the tumor and benign control tissues, including 158 up-regulated and 116 down-regulated proteins in AG tumors. A functional analysis of tumor-associated proteins revealed reduced expressions of several proteinases, including dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4), carboxypeptidase E (CPE) and prostate specific antigen (KLK3) in AG and metastatic PCa. A targeted analysis further identified that the reduced expression of DPP4 was associated with the accumulation of DPP4 substrates and the reduced ratio of DPP4 cleaved peptide to intact substrate peptide. Findings were further validated using an independently-collected tumor cohort, correlated with a TCGA mRNA dataset, and confirmed by immunohistochemical stains of PCa tumor microarray (TMA). Our study is the first large-scale proteomics analysis of PCa tissue using a DIA SWATH-MS platform. It provides not only an interrogative proteomic signature of PCa subtypes, but also indicates the critical roles played by certain proteinases during tumor progression. The spectrum map and protein profile generated in the study can be used to investigate potential biological mechanisms involved in PCa and for the development of a clinical assay to distinguish aggressive from indolent PCa.

Abstract Tunneling nanotube (TNT), a dynamic cell–cell contact, is dependent on actin polymerization. TNTs are efficient in transporting ions, proteins and organelles intercellularly, which are important mechanisms in physiological and pathological processes. Reported studies on the existence and function of TNTs among neural cells focus on cultured cell for the convenience in detecting TNTs’ ultrastructure. In this study, the adeno-associated virus (AAV-GFAP-EGFP-p2A-cre) was injected into the cerebral cortex of knock-in mice ROSA26 GNZ. GFAP promoter initiated the expression of enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) in infected astrocytes. At 10 days post injection (10 DPI), EGFP transferred from astrocytes in layer I–III to neurons in layer V. The dissemination of EGFP was not through endocytosis or exosome. Applying microscopes, we found that the intercellular transportation of EGFP through contact connection was F-actin dependent. Therefore, we concluded that EGFP transported from astrocytes to neurons in cortex via F-actin dependent TNTs. This study first proved that proteins transported intercellularly via TNTs in brain.

Abstract The aim was to evaluate the thoracic aorta in different cardiac phases to obtain the correct cardiac phase for measuring the maximum diameter required to predict aortic disease. Cardiac CT was performed on 97 patients for suspected coronary artery disease. The average diameter of ascending (AAD) and descending aorta (DAD) in the plane of pulmonary bifurcation, in the plane of the sinus junction (AAD [STJ] and DAD [STJ]), descending aorta in the plane of the diaphragm (DAD [Dia]), the diameter of the main pulmonary artery (MPAD), distance from the sternum to the spine (S-SD), and distance from the sternum to the ascending aorta (S-AAD) were assessed at 20 different time points in the cardiac cycle. Differences in aortic diameter in different cardiac phases and the correlation between aortic diameter and traditional risk factors were analyzed by the general linear mixed model. The diameter of the thoracic aorta reached the minimum at the phase of 95–0%, and reached the maximum at 30–35%. The maximum values of AAD, AAD (STJ), DAD, DAD (STJ), and DAD (Dia) were 32.51 ± 3.35 mm, 28.86 ± 3.01 mm, 23.46 ± 2.88 mm, 21.85 ± 2.58 mm, and 21.09 ± 2.66 mm, respectively. The maximum values of MPAD/AAD and DAD/AAD (STJ) were 0.8140 ± 0.1029, 0.7623 ± 0.0799, respectively. The diameter of the thoracic aorta varies with the cardiac phase. Analyzing the changes in aortic diameter, which can be done using cardiac CT, could provide a more accurate clinical measurement for predicting aortic disease.

Abstract Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a common and fatal complication of childhood hematologic malignancies, especially acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The clinical features, therapeutic regimens, and outcomes of TLS have not been comprehensively analyzed in Chinese children with ALL. A total of 5537 children with ALL were recruited from the Chinese Children’s Cancer Group, including 79 diagnosed with TLS. The clinical characteristics, treatment regimens, and survival of TLS patients were analyzed. Age distribution of children with TLS was remarkably different from those without TLS. White blood cells (WBC) count ≥ 50 × 109/L was associated with a higher risk of TLS [odds ratio (OR) = 2.6, 95% CI = 1.6–4.5]. The incidence of T-ALL in TLS children was significantly higher than that in non-TLS controls (OR = 4.7, 95% CI = 2.6–8.8). Hyperphosphatemia and hypocalcemia were more common in TLS children with hyperleukocytosis (OR = 2.6, 95% CI = 1.0–6.9 and OR = 5.4, 95% CI = 2.0–14.2, respectively). Abstract (Pro)renin receptor (PRR) and Yes-associated protein (YAP) play an important role in cardiovascular diseases. However, the role of PRR–YAP pathway in the pathogenesis of DCM is also not clear. We hypothesized that PRR–YAP pathway may promote pathological injuries in DCM by triggering redox. Wistar rats and neonatal rat cardiac fibroblasts were respectively used in vivo and in vitro studies. In order to observe the effects of PRR mediated YAP pathway on the pathogenesis of DCM, animal experiments were divided into 3 parts, including the evaluation the effects of PRR overexpression, PRR RNAi silencing and YAP RNAi silencing. Recombinant-adenoviruses-carried-PRR-gene (Ad-PRR), Ad-PRR-shRNA and lentivirus-carried-YAP-shRNA were constructed and the effects of PRR mediated YAP on the pathogenesis of DCM were evaluated. YAP specific inhibitor Verteporfin was also administrated in cardiac fibroblasts to explore the impact of PRR–YAP pathway on oxidative stress and myocardial fibrosis. The results displayed that PRR overexpression could enhance YAP expression but PRR RNAi silencing down-regulated its expression. Moreover, PRR overexpression could exacerbate oxidative stress and myocardial fibrosis in DCM, and these pathological changes could be rescued by YAP blockade. We concluded that PRR–YAP pathway plays a key role in the pathogenesis of DCM.

Abstract Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common types of malignancy. Its potential molecular mechanism has not been clarified. In this study, we aimed to explore potential biomarkers and prognosis-related hub genes associated with GC. The gene chip dataset GSE79973 was downloaded from the GEO datasets and limma package was used to identify the differentially expressed genes (DEGs). A total of 1269 up-regulated and 330 down-regulated genes were identified. The protein-protein interactions (PPI) network of DEGs was constructed by STRING V11 database, and 11 hub genes were selected through intersection of 11 topological analysis methods of CytoHubba in Cytoscape plug-in. All the 11 selected hub genes were found in the module with the highest score from PPI network of all DEGs by the molecular complex detection (MCODE) clustering algorithm. In order to explore the role of the 11 hub genes, we performed GO function and KEGG pathway analysis for them and found that the genes were enriched in a variety of functions and pathways among which cellular senescence, cell cycle, viral carcinogenesis and p53 signaling pathway were the most associated with GC. Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that 10 out of the 11 hub genes were related to the overall survival of GC patients. Further, seven of the 11 selected hub genes were verified significantly correlated with GC by uni- or multivariable Cox model and LASSO regression analysis including C3, CDK1, FN1, CCNB1, CDC20, BUB1B and MAD2L1. C3, CDK1, FN1, CCNB1, CDC20, BUB1B and MAD2L1 may serve as potential prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for GC.

Abstract In the Australian wheat belts, short episodes of high temperatures or hot spells during grain filling are becoming increasingly common and have an enormous impact on yield and quality, bringing multi-billion losses annually. This problem will become recurrent under the climate change scenario that forecast increasing extreme temperatures, but so far, no systematic analysis of the resistance to hot spells has yet been performed in a diverse genetic background. We developed a protocol to study the effects of heat on three important traits: grain size, grain dormancy and the presence of Late Maturity α-Amylase (LMA), and we validated it by analysing the phenotypes of 28 genetically diverse wheat landraces and exploring the potential variability existing in the responses to hot spells. Using controlled growth environments, the different genotypes were grown in our standard conditions until 20 days after anthesis, and then moved for 10 days into a heat chamber. Our study showed that our elevated temperature treatment during mid-late filling triggered multiple detrimental effects on yield and quality. We observed a reduction in grain size, a reduction in grain dormancy and increased LMA expression in most of the tested genotypes, but potential resistant lines were identified for each analyzed trait opening new perspectives for future genetic studies and breeding for heat-insensitive commercial lines.

Abstract Raising rice seedlings in flat trays has become the main method for mechanized transplanting of rice in China. However, seedling blocks raised by this method were easily cracked in practice, and this problem can be solved by padding a thin ramie fiber nonwoven film on the bottom surface of seedling tray. This study was conducted to determine the effects of this film on root-zone environment of rice seedlings. The results showed that on the 10th day after sowing, the soil inorganic nitrogen, especially nitrate nitrogen, content in the root-zone of the film treatment were considerably higher than in the no-film treatment, in contrast, the soil organic matter content was lower in the film treatment, and by the 20th day, the gap between treatments was enlarged. After applying the film, the Chao 1 index and Shannon index values for the soil bacterial community diversity decreased, and the rice seedlings were shorter, had higher root/shoot ratios, lower nitrate contents, and higher soluble sugar contents. We conclude that application of the ramie fiber nonwoven film resulted in substantial changes in the soil nutrient and bacterial community in root-zone in a short time, which significantly impacted the growth and development of rice seedlings.

Abstract To date, at least three lineages (Lineage 1–3) that are related to recombinant human adenovirus species C (HAdV-C) have been identified in China. Among them, Lineage 1 includes two Chinese strains, strain KR699642-CHN-20093 (CBJ11) and strain MF315029-CHN-2013 (BJ09), which were collected in Beijing in 2009 and 2013, respectively. Herein, we performed genomic and bioinformatics analysis of two HAdV-C strains (strain SX-2000-140 and strain SX-2004-327) that were isolated from the feces of two healthy children in Shanxi province of China in 2000 and 2004, respectively. Results revealed that the genomes of both Shanxi strains had the highest homology to two Chinese HAdV-C strains belonging to Lineage 1 and harbored the genetic elements of these two strains, thereby presuming that Lineage1 has been circulated in mainland of China for decades. In addition, though the viruses in Lineage 1 showed slightly different recombinant patterns resulting from the recombinant events among the five types of HAdV-C, all the Lineage 1 viruses shared the highest sequence similarities with the HAdV-2 prototype strain (NC_001405-USA-1953) across the genome, especially in the major capsid genes including hexon, and fiber. These results indicated that Lineage 1 viruses that were associated with recombinants shared a common ancestor that is closely related to the HAdV-2 virus. Our current findings confirmed that frequent recombination among the different HAdV-C types might be an important driving force for the molecular evolution of HAdV-C. Therefore, there is a strong need for further comprehensive and systematic monitoring, detection, and research on HAdV-C.

Abstract Slc39a8 encodes ZIP8, a divalent cation/bicarbonate symporter expressed in pluripotent mouse embryonic stem cells, and therefore ubiquitous in adult tissues; ZIP8 influxes Zn2+, Mn2+ and Fe2+. Slc39a8(neo/neo) knockdown mice exhibit 10–15% of wild-type ZIP8 mRNA and protein levels, and show pleiotropic phenotype of stunted growth, neonatal lethality, multi-organ dysmorphogenesis, and dysregulated hematopoiesis manifested as severe anemia. Herein we performed RNA-seq analysis of gestational day (GD)13.5 yolk sac and placenta, and GD16.5 liver, kidney, lung, heart and cerebellum, comparing Slc39a8(neo/neo) with Slc39a8(+/+) wild-type. Meta-data analysis of differentially-expressed genes revealed 29 unique genes from all tissues — having enriched GO categories associated with hematopoiesis and hypoxia and KEGG categories of complement, response to infection, and coagulation cascade — consistent with dysregulated hematopoietic stem cell fate. Based on transcription factor (TF) profiles in the JASPAR database, and searching for TF-binding sites enriched by Pscan, we identified numerous genes encoding zinc-finger and other TFs associated with hematopoietic stem cell functions. We conclude that, in this mouse model, deficient ZIP8-mediated divalent cation transport affects zinc-finger (e.g. GATA proteins) and other TFs interacting with GATA proteins (e.g. TAL1), predominantly in yolk sac. These data strongly support the phenotype of dysmorphogenesis and anemia seen in Slc39a8(neo/neo) mice in utero.

Abstract The red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) is one of the most economically important farmed aquatic species in China. However, it is also a famous invasive species in the world. This invasive species was dispersed most via human activities including intentional or unintentional carry in China. Thus, P. clarkii naturally distributed in China provides us a desirable mode to investigate the genetic structure of an invasive species dispersed mainly by human-mediated factors. To reveal the impact of human-mediated dispersal on genetic structure of P. clarkii in China, a total of 22,043 genome-wide SNPs were obtained from approximately 7.4 billion raw reads using 2b-RAD technique in this study. An evident pattern of population genetic structure and the asymmetrical migrational rates between different regions were observed with 22 populations based on these SNPs. This study provide a better understanding of the population genetic structure and demographic history of P. clarkii populations in China, inferring that anthropogenic factors (aquaculture or by accident) and ecological factors (e.g., complicated topography and climatic environment), as well as its special biological traits could account for the current population structure pattern and dispersal history of P. clarkii.

Abstract In this work, we demonstrate the strong extrinsic chirality of the larger-area metal nanocrescents by experiments and simulations. Our results show that the metal nanocrescent exhibits giant and tunable circular dichroism (CD) effect, which is intensively dependent on the incident angle of light. We attribute the giant extrinsic chirality of the metal nanocrescent to the excitation efficiencies difference of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) modes for two kinds of circularly polarized light at a non-zero incident angle. In experiment, the largest CD of 0.37 is obtained at the wavelength of 826 nm with the incident angle of 60°. Furthermore, the CD spectra can be tuned flexibly by changing the metal nanocrescent diameter. Benefitting from the simple, low-cost and mature fabrication process, the proposed large-area metal nanocrescents are propitious to application.

Abstract A strain was isolated from biological sludge to produce EPS by using anaerobically digested swine wastewater (ADSW). Potential of the EPS in ADSW treatment were discussed. Results showed that the optimal fermentation medium for EPS production was determined as 4 g K2HPO4, 2 g KH2PO4, and 2 g sucrose dissolved in 1 L ADSW. After fermentation for 60 h, 2.98 g EPS with main backbone of polysaccharides can be extracted from 1 L of fermentation broth. The EPS showed good performances in ADSW treatment, after conditioned by this EPS, removal efficiencies of COD, ammonia, and TP reached 70.2%, 76.5% and 82.8%, respectively, which were higher than that obtained when chemicals were selected as conditioning agents. Removal efficiencies were further improved when the EPS and polyaluminum chloride (PAC) were used simultaneously, and finally reached 91.6%, 90.8%, and 92.5%, respectively, under the optimized conditioning process by the composite of EPS of 16 mg/L, PAC of 12 g/L, pH of 7.5, and agitation speed of 200 r/min.

Abstract To identify countermeasures for the impacts of climate change on crop production, exploring the changes in crop phenology and their relationship to climate change is required. This study was based on cotton phenology and climate data collected from 13 agro-meteorological experimental stations and 13 meteorological stations on the North China Plain from 1981 to 2012. Spatiotemporal trends in the cotton phenology data, lengths of the different growing phases, mean temperatures, and rainfall were analyzed. These results indicated that warming accelerated cotton growth, advanced cotton phenology, and shortened the growing period of cotton. However, harvest dates were significantly delayed at 8 (61.5%) stations, the length of both the flowering-boll opening and boll opening-harvest periods increased at 10 (77.0%) stations, and a positive correlation was found between the mean temperature and the length of the whole growing period at 10 (77.0%) stations. Therefore, cotton practices and cultivars on the North China Plain should be adjusted accordingly. The response of cotton phenology to climate change, as shown here, can further guide the development of options for the adaptation of cotton production in the near future.

Abstract Blood flow influences atherosclerosis by generating wall shear stress, which alters endothelial cell (EC) physiology. Low shear stress induces dedifferentiation of EC through a process termed endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT). The mechanisms underlying shear stress-regulation of EndMT are uncertain. Here we investigated the role of the transcription factor Snail in low shear stress-induced EndMT. Studies of cultured EC exposed to flow revealed that low shear stress induced Snail expression. Using gene silencing it was demonstrated that Snail positively regulated the expression of EndMT markers (Slug, N-cadherin, α-SMA) in EC exposed to low shear stress. Gene silencing also revealed that Snail enhanced the permeability of endothelial monolayers to macromolecules by promoting EC proliferation and migration. En face staining of the murine aorta or carotid arteries modified with flow-altering cuffs demonstrated that Snail was expressed preferentially at low shear stress sites that are predisposed to atherosclerosis. Snail was also expressed in EC overlying atherosclerotic plaques in coronary arteries from patients with ischemic heart disease implying a role in human arterial disease. We conclude that Snail is an essential driver of EndMT under low shear stress conditions and may promote early atherogenesis by enhancing vascular permeability.

Abstract NAC proteins comprise of a plant-specific transcription factor (TF) family and play important roles in plant development and stress responses. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is the prime candidate and model bioenergy grass across the world. Excavating agronomically valuable genes is important for switchgrass molecular breeding. In this study, a total of 251 switchgrass NAC (PvNACs) family genes clustered into 19 subgroups were analyzed, and those potentially involved in stress response or tissue-specific expression patterns were pinpointed. Specifically, 27 PvNACs were considered as abiotic stress-related including four membrane-associated ones. Among 40 tissue-specific PvNACs expression patterns eight factors were identified that might be relevant for lignin biosynthesis and/or secondary cell wall formation. Conserved functional domains and motifs were also identified among the PvNACs and potential association between these motifs and their predicted functions were proposed, that might encourage experimental studies to use PvNACs as possible targets to improve biomass production and abiotic stress tolerance.

Abstract The European Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) recently published new diagnostic criteria for malnutrition. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether malnutrition by the new ESPEN diagnostic criteria can predict long-term mortality in elderly inpatients. We conducted a prospective study in the acute geriatric wards. Malnutrition was defined according to the new ESPEN criteria and the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), respectively. Abstract The construction and application of a new type of composite material are achieved more and more attention. However, expected Sb2Se3/attapulgite composites aim to use the low price, and high adsorption of attapulgite in assembling Sb2Se3 is quite difficult to be acquired by a facile and benign environmental hydrothermal method. In this manuscript, we developed a new way for preparation of an emerging composite by means of Sb2O3 as a media linking Sb2Se3 and attapulgite together, and finally won an emerging composite Sb2Se3/Sb2O3@attapulgite, which presented an excellent catalytic properties for catalytic hydrogenation of p-nitrophenol. It was noted that the Sb2Se3/Sb2O3@attapulgite composites exhibited a high conversion rate for the hydrogenation of p-nitrophenol that was up to 90.7% within 15 min, which was far more than the 61.5% of Sb2Se3 sample. The excellent catalytic performance was attributed to the highly dispersion Sb2Se3 microbelts and Sb2Se3@Sb2O3@attapulgite rods, which would improve the adsorption of the reactant species and facility electronic transfer process of the catalytic hydrogenation of p-nitrophenol.

Abstract Although many efforts have been devoted to the adsorptive removal of phosphate from aqueous solutions and eutrophic water, it is still highly desirable to develop novel adsorbents with high adsorption capacities. In this study, Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), MIL-101 and NH2-MIL-101, are fabricated through a general facile strategy. Their performance as an adsorbent for phosphate removal is investigated. Experiments are performed to study the effects of various factors on the phosphate adsorption, including adsorbent dosage, contact time and co-existing ions. Both MIL-101(Fe) and NH2-MIL-101(Fe) show highly effective removal of phosphates from aqueous solutions, and the concentration of phosphates decrease sharply from the initial 0.60 mg·L−1 to 0.045 and 0.032 mg·L−1, respectively, within just 30 min of exposure. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms reveal that NH2-MIL-101(Fe) has higher adsorption capacity than MIL-101(Fe) possibly due to the amine group. Furthermore, the Fe-based MOFs also exhibit a high selectivity towards phosphate over other anions such as chloride, bromide, nitrate and sulfate. Particularly, the prepared Fe-based MIL-101 materials are also capable of adsorbing phosphate in an actual eutrophic water sample and display better removal effect.

Abstract Tight gas sandstone samples are imaged at high resolution industrial X-ray computed tomography (ICT) systems to provide a three-dimensional quantitative characterization of the fracture geometries. Fracture networks are quantitatively analyzed using a combination of 2-D slice analysis and 3-D visualization and counting. The core samples are firstly scanned to produce grayscale slices, and the corresponding fracture area, length, aperture and fracture porosity as well as fracture density were measured. Then the 2-D slices were stacked to create a complete 3-D image using volume-rendering software. The open fractures (vug) are colored cyan whereas the calcite-filled fractures (high density objects) are colored magenta. The surface area and volume of both open fractures and high density fractures are calculated by 3-D counting. Then the fracture porosity and fracture aperture are estimated by 3-D counting. The fracture porosity and aperture from ICT analysis performed at atmospheric pressure are higher than those calculated from image logs at reservoir conditions. At last, the fracture connectivity is determined through comparison of fracture parameters with permeability. Distribution of fracture density and fracture aperture determines the permeability and producibility of tight gas sandstones. ICT has the advantage of performing three dimensional fracture imaging in a non-destructive way.

Abstract We have investigated numerically toroidal dipolar excitation at optical frequency in metamaterials whose unit cell consists of three identical Ag nanodisks and a SiO2 spacer on Ag substrate. The near-field plasmon hybridization between individual Ag nanodisks and substrate forms three magnetic dipolar resonances, at normal incidence of plane electromagnetic waves. The strong coupling among three magnetic dipolar resonances leads to the toroidal dipolar excitation, when space-inversion symmetry is broke along the polarization direction of incident light. The influences of some geometrical parameters on the resonance frequency and the excitation strength of toroidal dipolar mode are studied in detail. The radiated power from toroidal dipole is also compared with that from conventional electric and magnetic multipoles.

Three-dimensional integrated circuit (3D IC) technologies have been receiving much attention recently due to the near-ending of Moore's law of minimization in 2D IC. However, the reliability of 3D IC, which is greatly influenced by voids and failure in interconnects during the fabrication processes, typically requires slow testing and relies on human's judgement. Thus, the growing demand for 3D IC has generated considerable attention on the importance of reliability analysis and failure prediction. This research conducts 3D X-ray tomographic images combining with AI deep learning based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) for non-destructive analysis of solder interconnects. By training the AI machine using a reliable database of collected images, the AI can quickly detect and predict the interconnect operational faults of solder joints with an accuracy of up to 89.9% based on non-destructive 3D X-ray tomographic images. The important features which determine the "Good" or "Failure" condition for a reflowed microbump, such as area loss percentage at the middle cross-section, are also revealed.
