Abstract Light propagation facilitates digital information encryption by utilizing Epsilon Negative (ENG) metamaterials as a medium. Achieving the desired encryption hinges on synchronizing two pivotal features: the phase difference and the epsilon shifting of the metamaterials. The proposed metamaterial is intricately designed to represent digital bit 1 (states 0 and 1), contingent upon the arrangement of material multilayers within the metamaterial device. Specifically, state 1 is fashioned through a combination of Graphene and Gold, while state 0 is solely represented by Graphene on a metamaterial structure. The developed structure exhibits right hand metamaterial (epsilon of $$\:+$$ 7.20) for state 0 and plasma metamaterial (epsilon $$\:-$$ 6.94) for state 1 at 8.6 THz. Notably, the phase difference between 0 and 1 states is around $$\:90^\circ\:$$ . Primarily leveraging the synchronized combination phase and epsilon as the key design parameters for the metamaterial array, the beamforming pattern enables beam steering within the angular range of $$\:+30^\circ\:$$ to $$\:-30^\circ\:$$ . Secondly, employing a sophisticated material addition strategy involving Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) systematically manipulates the sidelobe in specific directions, thereby providing a mechanism to modulate the sidelobe and concurrently augment spatial resolution. After preparing the metamaterial coded (MC) lens, the source, lens and receiver strategically encrypt the scanning image, employing techniques including Doppler compression and 2D discrete Fourier transform. The proposed MC lens offers applicability like image encryption, security scanning, conveyor systems, hyperlenses and modern cryptography.

Abstract Why is it that some find art a prickly puzzle, others a yawning expanse, while others dive into its depths with vibrant joy? Some theorists have tried to quantify this diversity of art viewership. Famously, Housen made the case for five stages of aesthetic development: (a) accountive, (b) constructive, (c) classifying, (d) interpretive, and (e) re-creative. Here, we developed and validated a 17-item measure of aesthetic development that captures these stages. In a sample from Iran (N = 917), we showed how people’s scores on these stages correlate with personality traits and other art-related constructs. Specifically, we found that individuals with higher knowledge about art and more training in the arts tend to be at a more advanced stage of aesthetic development. People who score high on openness to experience also scored higher on more advanced aesthetic development stages. These results have implications for the quantitative studies of art and aesthetics in diverse cultures.

Abstract Lung ischemia-reperfusion injury (LIRI) causes oxidative stress, inflammation, and immune system activation. The Nrf2/Keap1/HO-1 pathway is important in cellular defense against these effects. Quercetin, a flavonoid with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties, has been investigated. Our aim in this study was to investigate the effect of quercetin on preventing lung ischemia-reperfusion injury and the role of the Nrf2/Keap1/HO-1 pathway. Sixty-four male Wistar rats were divided into four distinct groups(n = 16). Sham, lung ischemia-reperfusion (LIR), Saline + LIR, Quercetin + LIR (30 mg/kg i.p for a week before LIR). LIR groups were subjected to 60 min of ischemia (left pulmonary artery, vein, and bronchus) and 120 min of reperfusion. Our assessment encompassed a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including the evaluation of expression Nrf2, Keap1, and Heme Oxygenase-1 (HO-1) levels and NF-κB protein. Furthermore, we examined markers related to inflammation (interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor alpha), oxidative stress (malondialdehyde, total oxidant status, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, total antioxidant capacity), lung edema (Wet/dry lung weight ratio and total protein concentration), apoptosis (Bax and Bcl2 protein), and histopathological alterations (intra-alveolar edema, alveolar hemorrhage, and neutrophil infiltration). Our results show that ischemia-reperfusion results in heightened inflammation, oxidative stress, apoptosis, lung edema, and histopathological damage. Quercetin showed preventive effects by reducing these markers, acting through modulation of the Nrf2/Keap1 pathway and inhibiting the NF-κB pathway. This anti-inflammatory effect, complementary to the antioxidant effects of quercetin, provides a multifaceted approach to cell protection that is important for developing therapeutic strategies against ischemia-reperfusion injury and could be helpful in preventive strategies against ischemia-reperfusion.

Abstract COVID-19 is a highly contagious virus that uses Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) as a receptor to enter human cells. The virus leads to an increase in inflammatory cytokines (i.e. IL-6) and an impaired coagulation system, which can cause serious complications during and after the disease. Physical exercise has been shown to improve COVID-19 complications through various mechanisms, such as modulation of the immune and coagulation systems. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of 8 weeks of training on inflammatory, coagulation, and physical factors in patients with COVID-19 during the recovery phase. Twenty-seven male and female volunteers (age 20–45 years) who recently recovered from COVID-19 were assigned to the control (n = 13) or the training group (n = 14). Blood samples, aerobic capacity and muscle endurance were collected 24 h before the start of the interventions and 24 h after the final training session in week 4 and 48 h after the final training session in week 8. IL-6, ACE2, fibrinogen, and D-dimer were measured using ELISA. The training group showed a significant increase in muscle endurance (p = 0.004) and aerobic capacity (p = 0.009) compared to the control group. Serum levels of IL-6 and fibrinogen decreased in the training group but this decrease was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Despite a slight increase in the quality of life and sleep in the training group, no statistically significant difference was observed between the training and the control group. It appears that physical training has beneficial effects on the coagulation system, inflammatory factors, and sleep quality and can facilitate the recovery of COVID-19 patients.

Abstract Over time, with the increase in population and the subsequent increase in energy consumption and also due to the non-renewability of fossil fuels, the study of alternative fuels has increased. One of these fuels is biodiesel, which is a suitable alternative to fossil fuels such as diesel and received much attention from researchers today. For this reason, measuring the physical properties of biodiesel is of great importance. Due to the high cost and time-consuming nature of laboratory methods, numerical methods are used to estimate material properties. The novelty of this research was the use of two white box models, including Group method of data handling (GMDH) and Gene expression programming (GEP), which work on the basis of artificial intelligence. By using these models, two simple mathematical equations with high accuracy were presented to predict the surface tension of biodiesel. These models can be used at different temperatures and molecular weights. To do modeling, 78 laboratory data available in the literature were gathered and the data were randomly divided into two groups, train and test, in a ratio of 80 and 20. The input parameters include mass fraction of fatty acid ethyl esters and temperature (T), and esters are divided into three groups according to their molecular weight: less than 200 (Mw1), between 200 and 300 (Mw2), and greater than 300 (Mw3). The statistical error parameters were calculated for the two models developed in this research and after comparing the results, it was found that the GMDH model estimates the surface tension of biodiesel with a higher accuracy. The average absolute relative error for GMDH and GEP models was reported as 0.97 and 1.89, respectively. Also, other statistical error parameters of GMDH such as RMSE, SD, and R2 for the GMDH model were obtained as 0.444, 0.000233, and 0.9233, respectively. Moreover, sensitivity analysis showed that temperature has the highest impact on the surface tension of biodiesel, which is also an inverse effect. Finally, suspicious laboratory and outlier data points were identified using the Leverage technique. According to this analysis, only five data points were identified as outliers and suspicious laboratory data.

Abstract Disorders of gallbladder motility can lead to serious pathology. Bitter tastants acting upon bitter taste receptors (TAS2R family) have been proposed as a novel class of smooth muscle relaxants to combat excessive contraction in the airways and other organs. To explore whether this might also emerge as an option for gallbladder diseases, we here tested bitter tastants for relaxant properties and profiled Tas2r expression in the mouse gallbladder. In organ bath experiments, the bitter tastants denatonium, quinine, dextromethorphan, and noscapine, dose-dependently relaxed the pre-contracted gallbladder. Utilizing gene-deficient mouse strains, neither transient receptor potential family member 5 (TRPM5), nor the Tas2r143/Tas2r135/Tas2r126 gene cluster, nor tuft cells proved to be required for this relaxation, indicating direct action upon smooth muscle cells (SMC). Accordingly, denatonium, quinine and dextromethorphan increased intracellular calcium concentration preferentially in isolated gallbladder SMC and, again, this effect was independent of TRPM5. RT-PCR revealed transcripts of Tas2r108, Tas2r126, Tas2r135, Tas2r137, and Tas2r143, and analysis of gallbladders from mice lacking tuft cells revealed preferential expression of Tas2r108 and Tas2r137 in tuft cells. A TAS2R143-mCherry reporter mouse labeled tuft cells in the gallbladder epithelium. An in silico analysis of a scRNA sequencing data set revealed Tas2r expression in only few cells of different identity, and from in situ hybridization histochemistry, which did not label distinct cells. Our findings demonstrate profound tuft cell- and TRPM5-independent relaxing effects of bitter tastants on gallbladder smooth muscle, but do not support the concept that these effects are mediated by bitter receptors.

Abstract DPP4 inhibitors can control glucose homeostasis by increasing the level of GLP-1 incretins hormone due to dipeptidase mimicking. Despite the potent effects of DPP4 inhibitors, these compounds cause unwanted toxicity attributable to their effect on other enzymes. As a result, it seems essential to find novel and DPP4 selective compounds. In this study, we introduce a potent and selective DPP4 inhibitor via structure-based virtual screening, molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulation, MM/PBSA calculations, DFT analysis, and ADMET profile. The screened compounds based on similarity with FDA-approved DPP4 inhibitors were docked towards the DPP4 enzyme. The compound with the highest docking score, ZINC000003015356, was selected. For further considerations, molecular docking studies were performed on selected ligands and FDA-approved drugs for DPP8 and DPP9 enzymes. Molecular dynamics simulation was run during 200 ns and the analysis of RMSD, RMSF, Rg, PCA, and hydrogen bonding were performed. The MD outputs showed stability of the ligand–protein complex compared to available drugs in the market. The total free binding energy obtained for the proposed DPP4 inhibitor was more negative than its co-crystal ligand (N7F). ZINC000003015356 confirmed the role of the five Lipinski rule and also, have low toxicity parameter according to properties. Finally, DFT calculations indicated that this compound is sufficiently soft.

Abstract Gut microbiota dysbiosis is intimately associated with development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Nevertheless, the gut microbial community during the course of NAFLD and NASH is yet to be comprehensively profiled. This study evaluated alterations in fecal microbiota composition in Iranian patients with NAFLD and NASH compared with healthy individuals. This cross-sectional study enrolled 15 NAFLD, 15 NASH patients, and 20 healthy controls, and their clinical parameters were examined. The taxonomic composition of the fecal microbiota was determined by sequencing the V3-V4 region of 16S rRNA genes of stool samples. Compared to the healthy controls, NAFLD and NASH patients presented reduced bacterial diversity and richness. We noticed a reduction in the relative abundance of Bacteroidota and a promotion in the relative abundance of Proteobacteria in NAFLD and NASH patients. L-histidine degradation I pathway, pyridoxal 5'-phosphate biosynthesis I pathway, and superpathway of pyridoxal 5'-phosphate biosynthesis and salvage were more abundant in NAFLD patients than in healthy individuals. This study examined fecal microbiota dysbiosis in NAFLD and NASH patients and presented consistent results to European countries. These condition- and ethnicity-specific data could provide different diagnostic signatures and therapeutic targets.

Abstract The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between dietary patterns, derived through latent class analysis (LCA), with visceral adiposity index (VAI), Triglyceride-Glucose Index (TyG), inflammation biomarkers, and body composition in overweight and obese Iranian women. For this cross-sectional study, dietary exposure was assessed using a validated 147-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Dietary patterns were derived through LCA. Binary logistic was performed to test the associations of dietary patterns with VAI, TyG, inflammation biomarkers, and body composition. Health centers in Tehran, Iran. 376 obese and overweight women, aged > 18 years. Two dietary patterns were identified using LCA modeling: healthy and unhealthy. Women in the unhealthy class were characterized by higher consumption of fast food, sweetened beverages, grains, unhealthy oils, butter and margarine, and snacks. Compared with the healthy class, the unhealthy class was associated with an increased risk of higher fasting blood sugar (FBS) (OR = 6.07; 95% CI: 1.33–27.74, P value = 0.02), c-reactive protein (CRP) (OR = 1.72; 95% CI: 1.05–2.80; P value = 0.02), and lower fat free mass index (FFMI) (OR = 0.56; 95% CI: 0.35–0.88, P value = 0.01), after adjusting for confounders. We found that adherence to an unhealthy dietary pattern was associated with decreased FFMI and increased FBS and CRP using LCA, but not with the rest of the variables. Further studies should be conducted to confirm the veracity of these findings.

Abstract In recent years, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has become the leading method for treating aortic stenosis. While the procedure has improved dramatically in the past decade, there are still uncertainties about the impact of TAVR on coronary blood flow. Recent research has indicated that negative coronary events after TAVR may be partially driven by impaired coronary blood flow dynamics. Furthermore, the current technologies to rapidly obtain non-invasive coronary blood flow data are relatively limited. Herein, we present a lumped parameter computational model to simulate coronary blood flow in the main arteries as well as a series of cardiovascular hemodynamic metrics. The model was designed to only use a few inputs parameters from echocardiography, computed tomography and a sphygmomanometer. The novel computational model was then validated and applied to 19 patients undergoing TAVR to examine the impact of the procedure on coronary blood flow in the left anterior descending (LAD) artery, left circumflex (LCX) artery and right coronary artery (RCA) and various global hemodynamics metrics. Based on our findings, the changes in coronary blood flow after TAVR varied and were subject specific (37% had increased flow in all three coronary arteries, 32% had decreased flow in all coronary arteries, and 31% had both increased and decreased flow in different coronary arteries). Additionally, valvular pressure gradient, left ventricle (LV) workload and maximum LV pressure decreased by 61.5%, 4.5% and 13.0% respectively, while mean arterial pressure and cardiac output increased by 6.9% and 9.9% after TAVR. By applying this proof-of-concept computational model, a series of hemodynamic metrics were generated non-invasively which can help to better understand the individual relationships between TAVR and mean and peak coronary flow rates. In the future, tools such as these may play a vital role by providing clinicians with rapid insight into various cardiac and coronary metrics, rendering the planning for TAVR and other cardiovascular procedures more personalized.

Abstract A low-profile dual-band pixelated defected ground antenna has been proposed at 3.5 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands. This work presents a flexible design guide for achieving single-band and dual-band antenna using pixelated defected ground (PDG). The unique pixelated defected ground has been designed using the binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO) algorithm. Computer Simulation Technology Microwave Studio incorporated with Matlab has been utilized in the antenna design process. The PDG configuration provides freedom of exploration to achieve the desired antenna performance. Compact antenna design can be achieved by making the best use of designated design space on the defected ground (DG) plane. Further, a V-shaped transfer function based on BPSO with fast convergence allows us to efficiently implement the PDG technique. In the design procedure, pixelization is applied to a small rectangular region of the ground plane. The square pixels on the designated defected ground area of the antenna have been formed using a binary bit string, consisting of 512 bits taken during each iteration of the algorithm. The PDG method is concerned with the shape of the DG and does not rely on the geometrical dimension analysis used in traditional defected ground antennas. Initially, three single band antennas have been designed at 3.5 GHz, 5.2 GHz and 5.8 GHz using PDG technique. Finally, same PDG area has been used to design a dual-band antenna at 3.5 GHz and 5.8 GHz. The proposed antenna exhibits almost omnidirectional radiation performance with nearly 90% efficiency. It also shows dual radiation pattern property with similar patterns having different polarizations at each operational band. The antenna is fabricated on a ROGERS RO4003 substrate with 1.52 mm thickness. Reflection coefficient and radiation patterns are measured to validate its performance. The simulated and measured results of the antenna are closely correlated. The proposed antenna is suitable for different applications in Internet of Things.

Abstract Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a frequently used minimally invasive intervention for patient with aortic stenosis across a broad risk spectrum. While coronary artery disease (CAD) is present in approximately half of TAVR candidates, correlation of post-TAVR complications such as paravalvular leakage (PVL) or misalignment with CAD are not fully understood. For this purpose, we developed a multiscale computational framework based on a patient-specific lumped-parameter algorithm and a 3-D strongly-coupled fluid–structure interaction model to quantify metrics of global circulatory function, metrics of global cardiac function and local cardiac fluid dynamics in 6 patients. Based on our findings, PVL limits the benefits of TAVR and restricts coronary perfusion due to the lack of sufficient coronary blood flow during diastole phase (e.g., maximum coronary flow rate reduced by 21.73%, 21.43% and 21.43% in the left anterior descending (LAD), left circumflex (LCX) and right coronary artery (RCA) respectively (N = 6)). Moreover, PVL may increase the LV load (e.g., LV load increased by 17.57% (N = 6)) and decrease the coronary wall shear stress (e.g., maximum wall shear stress reduced by 20.62%, 21.92%, 22.28% and 25.66% in the left main coronary artery (LMCA), left anterior descending (LAD), left circumflex (LCX) and right coronary artery (RCA) respectively (N = 6)), which could promote atherosclerosis development through loss of the physiological flow-oriented alignment of endothelial cells. This study demonstrated that a rigorously developed personalized image-based computational framework can provide vital insights into underlying mechanics of TAVR and CAD interactions and assist in treatment planning and patient risk stratification in patients.

Abstract Tunnels, as highly cost-demanding infrastructures which facilitate the transportation of people and goods, have been a target of terrorist attacks within the past few decades. The significance of the destructive impact of explosives on these structures has resulted in research on the development of blast-resistant design approaches. In this paper, water curtains are proposed as a blast-resistant system due to the established performance of water against explosives in free fields in previous studies as well as its capability to mitigate the potential incoming fire after an explosion. A parametric study was conducted for this purpose, considering the effects of curtain thickness, the distance of the curtain from the tunnel opening, and the amount of TNT charge. Accordingly, fifty-two finite element (FE) models were created in the FE package ABAQUS to investigate the performance of a water wall in a typical tunnel through the Eulerian approach to simulation. The water curtains had four different thicknesses and were located at three different distances from the reference point. TNT explosive charges were placed at the tunnel opening with four different masses. The thicker walls nearer to the tunnel opening were found to be more effective. However, the peak pressure reduction in all charges was in a desirable range of 53 to 80%. The parametric study also illustrated that the peak pressures were more sensitive to wall thickness rather than TNT charges mass and the wall distance from the explosives. We anticipate this preliminary study to be a starting point for the further development of the concept of water curtains for blast mitigation.

Abstract Tachykinins (TKs) are a group of conserved neuropeptides. In insects, tachykinin-related peptides (TRPs) are important modulators of several functions such as nociception and lipid metabolism. Recently, it has become clear that TRPs also play a role in regulating the insect immune system. Here, we report a transcriptomic analysis of changes in the expression levels of immune-related genes in the storage pest Tenebrio molitor after treatment with Tenmo-TRP-7. We tested two concentrations (10–8 and 10–6 M) at two time points, 6 and 24 h post-injection. We found significant changes in the transcript levels of a wide spectrum of immune-related genes. Some changes were observed 6 h after the injection of Tenmo-TRP-7, especially in relation to its putative anti-apoptotic action. Interestingly, 24 h after the injection of 10–8 M Tenmo-TRP-7, most changes were related to the regulation of the cellular response. Applying 10–6 M Tenmo-TRP-7 resulted in the downregulation of genes associated with humoral responses. Injecting Tenmo-TRP-7 did not affect beetle survival but led to a reduction in haemolymph lysozyme-like antibacterial activity, consistent with the transcriptomic data. The results confirmed the immunomodulatory role of TRP and shed new light on the functional homology between TRPs and TKs.

Abstract For the first time, a bio-photo-catalyst is synthesized in a microfluidic platform. The microchannel, which is wall-coated by in situ synthesized bio-photo-catalyst is used as an opto-fluidic reactor for amoxicillin degradation. Analyses including SEM, XRD, FTIR, Raman, UV–Vis spectra, and DLS have been used to characterize samples. The structure and morphology of TiO2 in microfluidic assisted synthesis are studied at 70–120 °C. The results show that both single-crystalline anatase sample and two-phase samples of anatase and rutile can be attained. According to SEM images, the smallest size and the narrowest particle size distribution (0.86 nm $$\pm \hspace{0.17em}0.14$$ ± 0.14 ) is achieved by synthesis at 70 °C. Elemental mapping of Ti shows a uniform coating layer on inner walls. Raman signals besides the primary amines in FTIR results show the biological activity of the cross-linked Glucose oxidase (GOx), which is aimed for situ generation of H2O2. FTIR comparison of bulk and spiral microfluidic synthesized ZnO indicates identical bonds. SEM-coupled with performance experimentation reveal that by regulating the flowrate of spiral micromixer for ZnCl2 at 25 µl/min and NaOH at 50 µl/min, the narrowest size distribution and best the bio-photo-catalytic performance of ZnO nanoparticles is observed.
