Existing paradigms for stroke diagnosis typically involve computed tomography (CT) imaging to classify ischemic versus hemorrhagic stroke variants, as treatment for these subtypes varies widely. Delays in diagnosis and transport of unstable patients may worsen neurological status. To address these issues, we describe the development of a rapid, portable, and accurate eddy current damping (ECD) stroke sensor. Copper wire was wound to create large (11.4 cm), medium (4.5 cm), and small (1.5 cm) solenoid coils with varying diameters, with each connected to an inductance-to-digital converter. Eight human participants were recruited between December 15, 2019 and March 15, 2020, including two hemorrhagic stroke, two ischemic stroke, one subarachnoid hemorrhage, and three control participants. Observers were blinded to lesion type and location. A head cap with 8 horizontal scanning paths was placed on the patient. The sensor was tangentially rotated across each row on the patient’s head circumferentially. Consent, positioning, and scanning with the sensor took roughly 15 min from start to end for each participant and all scanning took place at the patient bedside. The ECD sensor accurately classified and imaged each of the varying stroke types in each patient. The sensor additionally detected ischemic and hemorrhagic lesions located deep inside the brain, and its range is selectively tunable during sensor design and fabrication.

Population with malignancy is growing worldwide; however, its tuberculosis (TB) burden including remains unclear regarding incidence, mortality, and relapse. We retrieved information and identified patients with malignancy and TB between 2000 and 2015 from the Taiwanese National Health Insurance reimbursement datasets, Taiwan cancer registry and death registration. We analyzed the incidence of new TB in patients with malignancy and their mortality as well as TB recurrence. During study period, we reviewed 1,105,009 patients after exclusion and among them, 19,906 had newly diagnosed TB. The TB incidence in cancer patients divided all TB events increased annually, from 3% in 2000 to 13% in 2015. The standard incidence rates (SIR) were highest in cancer of respiratory tract (5.45), hematology (3.70) and then head and neck area (2.58). The mortality directly due to TB was defined as 0.83% and all-cause mortality were approximately 10.5% at 3 months and 20.56% at 12 months. After completing TB treatment, recurrence was diagnosed in 626 (3.14%), and 1001 (5.03%) patients within the first and the first two years, respectively. In conclusion, the incidence of TB in patients with malignancy increase yearly as well as its proportion within overall cases. The twelve-month all-cause mortality during TB and the two-year recurrence are as high as 20.56% and 5.03%, respectively. It indicates the importance of this population in future TB control, especially for those with malignancy of respiratory tract, and hematology as well as head and neck area.

After traumatic brain injury (TBI), an inflammatory response in the brain might affect the immune system. The risk of pulmonary infection reportedly increases in patients with TBI. We aimed to evaluate the risk of tuberculosis (TB) in patients with TBI in Taiwan. All participants were selected from the intensive care unit (ICU). Patients with TBI were defined as patients in ICU with intracranial injury, and comparison cohort were patients in ICU without TBI diagnosis. There was a significant difference in TB risk between the patients with TBI and the comparison cohort according to age and the Charlson’s comorbidity index (CCI) score. Thus, we divided patients based on CCI into three groups for further analysis: mild (CCI = 0), moderate (CCI = 1/2), severe (CCI > 2). Mild-CCI group had a lower TB incidence rate (0.74%) and longer time to TB development (median: 2.43) than the other two groups. Moderate-CCI group had 1.52-fold increased risk of TB infection (p p = 0.0481). Severe-CCI group had significantly higher mortality than the mild-CCI group (p = 0.0366). Patients with TBI and more comorbidities had higher risk of TB infection with higher mortality rate.

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) share common risk factors. However, there is limited information about COPD and CKD. This is case-cohort study was carried out using the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database to evaluate the correlation between COPD and CKD. We identified cases aged older than 40 years who had an inpatient hospitalization with a first-time COPD diagnosis between 1998 and 2008. Control were selected from hospitalized patients without COPD or CKD and were matched according to age, gender and year of admission at a 2:1 ratio. Cox proportional hazards model was used to assess the association of CKD and COPD.
