Taxus chinensis is a well-known gymnosperm with great ornamental and medicinal value. Its purple red brown heartwood (HW) has many attributes such as straight texture, high density, mechanical strength, rich elasticity and corrosion resistance that is highly prized commercially. T. chinensis sapwood (SW), in comparison, lacks these important traits. At present, little is known about the differences of metabolites between the SW and HW in T. chinensis. Widely targeted metabolic profiling was performed to analyze the metabolic profiles of HW and SW in T. chinensis using Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Ionization-Mass Spectrometry (LC-EI-MS). A total of 607 metabolites were detected in HW and SW. Among them, 146 metabolites were significantly higher, and 167 metabolites significantly lower, in HW as compared to SW. These differential metabolites were mainly involved in metabolic pathways and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, such as flavonoids, flavone and flavonol, phenylpropanoids and antibiotics. Moreover, 71 flavonoids and isoflavones were found to be significantly different between HW and SW. Our results show the difference of components between the HW and SW, which has potential significance to further elucidate the mechanism of HW color formation. The results will provide insight into the metabolites associated with wood color formation and useful information for understanding the metabolites associated with wood quality.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the WW domain containing oxidoreductase (WWOX) gene were recently identified to be quantitative trait loci for lung function and thus likely to be susceptible biomarkers for COPD. However, the associations between WWOX SNPs and COPD risk are still unclear. Here, by conducting a two-center case-control study including 1511 COPD cases and 1677 controls and a family-based analysis comprising 95 nuclear pedigrees, we tested the associations between five SNPs that are rs10220974C >T, rs3764340C >G, rs12918952G >A, rs383362G >T, rs12828G >A of WWOX and COPD risk as well as the hereditary inclination of these loci among COPD families. We found that the SNP rs383362G >T was significantly associated with an increased risk of COPD in a T allele-number dependent-manner (OR = 1.30, 95%CI = 1.11 - 1.52). The T allele was more prone to over transmit to sick children and sibs than the G allele (Z = 2.900, P = 0.004). Moreover, the forced expiratory volume in one second/forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC), FEV1/predicted-FEV1 and annual FEV1 also significantly decreased in the rs383362T carriers compared to the rs383362GG carriers. For other SNPs, no significant association was observed for COPD and pulmonary function. Taken together, our data demonstrated that the SNP rs383362G >T of WWOX plays a role in COPD inheritance.

Traditional nanosized photocatalysts usually have high photocatalytic activity but can not be efficiently recycled. Film-shaped photocatalysts on the substrates can be easily recycled, but they have low surface area and/or high production cost. To solve these problems, we report on the design and preparation of efficient and easily recyclable macroscale photocatalysts with nanostructure by using Ta3N5 as a model semiconductor. Ta3N5-Pt nonwoven cloth has been prepared by an electrospinning-calcination-nitridation-wet impregnation method, and it is composed of Ta3N5 fibers with diameter of 150–200 nm and hierarchical pores. Furthermore, these fibers are constructed from Ta3N5 nanoparticles with diameter of ~25 nm which are decorated with Pt nanoparticles with diameter of ~2.5 nm. Importantly, Ta3N5-Pt cloth can be used as an efficient and easily recyclable macroscale photocatalyst with wide visible-light response, for the degradation of methylene blue and parachlorophenol, probably resulting in a very promising application as “photocatalyst dam” for the polluted river.
