Two-dimensional (2D) materials have recently drawn interest in various applications due to their superior electronic properties, high specific surface area, and surface activity. However, studies on the catalytic properties of the 2D counterpart of V 2 O 5 are scarce. In the present study, the catalytic properties of 2D V 2 O 5 vis-à-vis bulk V 2 O 5 for the degradation of methylene blue dye are discussed for the first time. The 2D V 2 O 5 catalyst was synthesized using a modified chemical exfoliation technique. A massive increase in the electrochemically active surface area of 2D V 2 O 5 by one order of magnitude greater than that of bulk V 2 O 5 was observed in this study. Simultaneously, ~ 7 times increase in the optical absorption coefficient of 2D V 2 O 5 significantly increases the number of photogenerated electrons involved in the catalytic performance. In addition, the surface activity of the 2D V 2 O 5 catalyst is enhanced by generating surface oxygen vacancy defects. In the current study, we have achieved ~ 99% degradation of 16 ppm dye using the 2D V 2 O 5 nanosheet catalysts under UV light exposure with a remarkable degradation rate constant of 2.31 min -1 , which is an increase of the order of 10 2 from previous studies using V 2 O 5 nanostructures and nanocomposites as catalysts. Since the enhanced photocatalytic activity emerged from the surface and optical properties of the catalyst, the current study shows great promise for the future application of 2D V 2 O 5 in photo- and electrocatalysis., (© 2024. The level of phosphorus must be carefully monitored for proper and effective utilization of coal and coal ash. The phosphorus content needs to be assessed to optimize combustion efficiency and maintenance costs of power plants, ensure quality, and minimize the environmental impact of coal and coal ash. The detection of low levels of phosphorus in coal and coal ash is a significant challenge due to its complex chemical composition and low concentration levels. Effective monitoring requires accurate and sensitive equipment for the detection of phosphorus in coal and coal ash. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is a commonly used analytical technique for the determination of phosphorus content in coal and coal ash samples but proves challenging due to their comparatively weak fluorescence intensity. Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) emerges as a promising alternative that is simple, rapid, and cost-effective. However, research in this area has been limited. Until now, only a limited number of research studies have outlined the estimation of major elements in coal, predominantly relying on FTIR spectroscopy. In this article, we explore the potential of FTIR spectroscopy combined with machine learning models (piecewise linear regression-PLR, partial least square regression-PLSR, random forest-RF, and support vector regression-SVR) for quantifying the phosphorus content in coal and coal ash. For model development, the methodology employs the mid-infrared absorption peak intensity levels of phosphorus-specific functional groups and anionic groups of phosphate minerals at various working concentration ranges of coal and coal ash. This paper proposes a multi-model estimation (using PLR, PLSR, and RF) approach based on FTIR spectral data to detect and rapidly estimate low levels of phosphorus in coal and its ash (R 2 of 0.836, RMSE of 0.735 ppm, RMSE (%) of 34.801, MBE of - 0.077 ppm, MBE (%) of 5.499, and MAE of 0.528 ppm in coal samples and R 2 of 0.803, RMSE of 0.676 ppm, RMSE (%) of 38.050, MBE of - 0.118 ppm, MBE (%) of 4.501, and MAE of 0.474 ppm in coal ash samples). Our findings suggest that FTIR combined with the multi-model approach combining PLR, PLSR, and RF regression models is a reliable tool for rapid and near-real-time measurement of phosphorus in coal and coal ash and can be suitably modified to model phosphorus content in other natural samples such as soil, shale, etc., (© 2024. Radiation-induced intestinal injury (RIII) constitutes a crucial clinical element of acute radiation syndrome with life-threatening implications posing challenges in devising effective medical countermeasures. Herein, we report the potential of 7, 8-diacetoxy-4-methylthiocoumarin (DAMTC) to mitigate RIII following total-body irradiation (TBI) in C57BL/6 mice and underlying mechanisms. Administration of DAMTC 24 hours post TBI facilitated structural reconstitution and restoration of functional absorption linked to alleviation of radiation-induced apoptotic death of intestinal crypt progenitor/stem (ICPS) and villus stromal cells through induction of Bcl-2 family-mediated anti-apoptotic signalling. Reduction in TBI-induced DNA damage accumulation coupled with inhibition of cell cycle arrest through stimulation of anti-p53- and anti-p21-dependent synergistic signalling protected ICPS cells from radiation injury. Enhanced proliferation of crypt stem cells, induction of anti-oxidant defence, subjugation of TBI-induced lipid peroxidation and phenotypic polarization of intestinal macrophages to anti-inflammatory M2 class underlie amelioration of RIII. Stimulation of multiple mitigative signalling processes by DAMTC appeared to be associated with enhanced protein acetylation, an important regulator of cellular responses to radiation damage. Our findings establish the mitigative potential of DAMTC against RIII by hyper-acetylation-mediated epigenetic regulation, which triggers axes of anti-apoptotic and pro-survival pathways, enabling proliferation and maintenance of ICPS cells leading to epithelial regeneration.

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of sediment, based on the accumulation of trapped charge in natural crystals since their last exposure to daylight, has revolutionised our understanding of the late Quaternary period. Recently, a complementary technique called luminescence rock surface dating (RSD), which uses differential spatial eviction of trapped charges in rocks exposed to daylight, has been developed to derive exposure and burial ages, and hard-rock erosion rates. In its current form, the RSD technique suffers from labour intensive sample preparation, uncertainties in the depth and dose rate estimates, and poor resolution of the luminescence-depth profile. Here, we develop a novel, 2D luminescence imaging technique for RSD of large rock slabs (3 × 5 cm) to overcome these challenges. We utilize the recently discovered infrared photoluminescence (IRPL) signal for direct, non-destructive imaging of the luminescence-depth profile in a sub-aerially exposed granitic rock, with an unprecedented spatial resolution of ~140 µm. We further establish a correlation between luminescence and geochemistry using micro X-ray fluorescence (µXRF) spectroscopy. Our study promises a substantial advancement in luminescence imaging and paves the path towards novel applications using 2D dating, micro-dosimetry in mixed composition samples, and portable instrumentation for in-situ luminescence measurements.

Excitation-energy-dependent emission (EDE) is well known from photoluminescence (PL) studies of polar solvents and carbon-based nanostructures. In polar solvents, this effect known as the 'red edge effect' (REE) is understood to arise from solute-solvent interactions, whereas, in case of carbon-based nanostructures, the origin is highly debated. Understanding this effect has important bearings on the potential applications of these materials. EDE has never been reported from large crystalline materials, except very recently by our group. Here, we make detailed investigations to understand the universality and the mechanism behind the EDE in a wide band gap aluminosilicate (feldspar), which comprises more than half of the Earth's crust, and is widely used in geophotonics (e.g., optical dating). We observe EDE up to 150 nm at room temperature in our samples, which is unprecedented in rigid macroscopic structures. Based on PL investigations at 295 K and 7 K, we present a novel model that is based on photoionisation of a deep lying defect and subsequent transport/relaxation of free electrons in the sub-conduction band tail states. Our model has important implications for potential photonic applications using feldspar, measurement of band tail width in wide bandgap materials, and understanding the EDE effect in other materials.

Optical dating has revolutionized our understanding of Global climate change, Earth surface processes, and human evolution and dispersal over the last ~500 ka. Optical dating is based on an anti-Stokes photon emission generated by electron-hole recombination within quartz or feldspar; it relies, by default, on destructive read-out of the stored chronometric information. We present here a fundamentally new method of optical read-out of the trapped electron population in feldspar. The new signal termed as Infra-Red Photo-Luminescence (IRPL) is a Stokes emission (~1.30 eV) derived from NIR excitation (~1.40 eV) on samples previously exposed to ionizing radiation. Low temperature (7-295 K) spectroscopic and time-resolved investigations suggest that IRPL is generated from excited-to-ground state relaxation within the principal (dosimetry) trap. Since IRPL can be induced even in traps remote from recombination centers, it is likely to contain a stable (non-fading), steady-state component. While IRPL is a powerful tool to understand details of the electron-trapping center, it provides a novel, alternative approach to trapped-charge dating based on direct, non-destructive probing of chronometric information. The possibility of repeated readout of IRPL from individual traps will open opportunities for dating at sub-micron spatial resolution, thus, marking a step change in the optical dating technology.
