2. The impact of salt consumption on cardiometabolic and cognitive health in aged female rats

Abstract Health concerns about excess dietary salt have traditionally focused on its relationship with hypertension and the increased risk of cognitive impairment. However, research has often overlooked the unique health concerns and physiological differences between men and women, leading to gaps in knowledge, particularly regarding disease prevention and treatment strategies for women. The present study examined aged female rats over 12 weeks, using control, low, and high salt diets to mimic the post-menopausal phase in human females when cardiovascular risks typically increase. Cardiometabolic parameters and cognition were monitored. The findings revealed the impact of varying salt diets on blood lipids, blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) levels and variability, anxiety, and cognition. Specifically, intake of a low-salt diet led to a significant reduction in BP levels but an increase in BP variability starting from the eighth week of the diet onset. Moreover, HR levels and variability were notably higher with the low-salt diet. Aged female rats exhibited increased anxiety on the low-salt diet at the fourth week, but the anxiety began to improve starting from the eighth week. Additionally, a trend suggested that the low salt intake worsened short-term memory while improving long-term memory. Furthermore, plasma lipids decreased significantly in aged female rats on a high-salt diet compared to those on a low-salt diet. The study provides valuable insights into the effects of salt intake on cardiometabolic parameters and cognitive function in aged female rats, highlighting the importance of considering sex-specific dietary guidelines for cardiometabolic and cognitive health.

3. Analysis of clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis on primary gastric adenosquamous carcinoma

Abstract Primary gastric adenosquamous carcinoma (PGASC) is a rare type of gastric cancer with limited research and poorly understood clinicopathological features. This study investigated the clinicopathological features and outcomes of PGASC. Patients with PGASC from Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology and from the published literature were enrolled in this study. Survival curves were generated using the Kaplan–Meier method, and prognostic factors were identified through Cox proportional hazards regression models. This study identified 76 eligible cases of PGASC, with 45 cases from published literature and 31 from our center. The most prevalent symptoms were abdominal pain and dysphagia, with a median age of 62 years (range: 29–84 years). The primary lesions were predominantly in the proximal stomach, with a median tumor size of 6.5 cm (range: 1.5–16.0 cm). Tumor stages II, III, and IV were detected in 12 (16.7%), 43 (59.7%), and 17 (23.6%) patients, respectively. Most tumors were poorly differentiated in both the squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) component and adenocarcinoma (AC) component. The median survival time was 17 months (range: 2–122 months). The 1, 3, and 5-year overall survival (OS) was 60.7%, 31.1%, and 24.1%, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that OS was independently predicted by the proportion of SCC component, differentiation of AC component, and tumor stage. PGASC is a rare disease with a poor prognosis. A high proportion of SCC components, low differentiated AC components, and advanced tumor were associated with worse survival in patients with PGASC. Adjuvant therapy did not improve survival time.

4. Screening and validation of the optimal panel of reference genes in colonic epithelium and relative cancer cell lines

Abstract Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) is the most common method to determine mRNA expression, and Minimum Information for Publication of RT-qPCR Experiments (MIQE) proposes that a panel of reference genes for RT-qPCR is conducive to obtaining accurate results. This study aimed to screen and verify the optimal panel of reference genes in colorectal cancer (CRC) and normal colonic cell lines. In the study, eight candidate reference genes (GAPDH, ACTB, 18S, PPIA, B2M, SDHA, GUSB, and YWHAZ) were selected for RT-qPCR to detect their expression in NCM460, HT29, HCT116, SW480, SW620, DLD-1, LOVO and RKO cell lines. The stability of reference genes and the optimal panel were evaluated by geNorm, NormFinder, and BestKeeper software. As results, the expression levels of candidate reference genes differed in the colonic epithelial cell lines, and the number of optimal panel of reference genes is two. B2M and YWHAZ were the two most stable reference genes for NCM460, HCT116, SW620, LOVO, and RKO cell lines, while only one of B2M and YWHAZ was most stable in HT29 and SW480 cells. In DLD-1 cells, the stability of B2M and YWHAZ ranked 3rd and 6th, PPIA and GUSB were the most stable two. Furthermore, the YWHZA + B2M performed smaller intragroup differences than other panel or single reference gene. In conclusion, this study indicates the optimal panel of reference genes is YWHZA + B2M for the NCM460, HCT116, SW620, LOVO, RKO, SW480, and HT29 cell lines, but it is PPIA + GUSB in DLD-1 cell lines.

5. Bee species perform distinct foraging behaviors that are best described by different movement models

Abstract In insect-pollinated plants, the foraging behavior of pollinators affects their pattern of movement. If distinct bee species vary in their foraging behaviors, different models may best describe their movement. In this study, we quantified and compared the fine scale movement of three bee species foraging on patches of Medicago sativa. Bee movement was described using distances and directions traveled between consecutive racemes. Bumble bees and honey bees traveled shorter distances after visiting many flowers on a raceme, while the distance traveled by leafcutting bees was independent of flower number. Transition matrices and vectors were calculated for bumble bees and honey bees to reflect their directionality of movement within foraging bouts; leafcutting bees were as likely to move in any direction. Bee species varied in their foraging behaviors, and for each bee species, we tested four movement models that differed in how distances and directions were selected, and identified the model that best explained the movement data. The fine-scale, within-patch movement of bees could not always be explained by a random movement model, and a general model of movement could not be applied to all bee species.

6. Heterostrain-enabled dynamically tunable moiré superlattice in twisted bilayer graphene

Abstract The ability to precisely control moiré patterns in two-dimensional materials has enabled the realization of unprecedented physical phenomena including Mott insulators, unconventional superconductivity, and quantum emission. Along with the twist angle, the application of independent strain in each layer of stacked two-dimensional materials—termed heterostrain—has become a powerful means to manipulate the moiré potential landscapes. Recent experimental studies have demonstrated the possibility of continuously tuning the twist angle and the resulting physical properties. However, the dynamic control of heterostrain that allows the on-demand manipulation of moiré superlattices has yet to be experimentally realized. Here, by harnessing the weak interlayer van der Waals bonding in twisted bilayer graphene devices, we demonstrate the realization of dynamically tunable heterostrain of up to 1.3%. Polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy confirmed the existence of substantial heterostrain by presenting triple G peaks arising from the independently strained graphene layers. Theoretical calculations revealed that the distorted moiré patterns via heterostrain can significantly alter the electronic structure of twisted bilayer graphene, allowing the emergence of multiple absorption peaks ranging from near-infrared to visible spectral ranges. Our experimental demonstration presents a new degree of freedom towards the dynamic modulation of moiré superlattices, holding the promise to unveil unprecedented physics and applications of stacked two-dimensional materials.

10. Effectiveness of using representative subsets of global climate models in future crop yield projections

Abstract Representative subsets of global climate models (GCMs) are often used in climate change impact studies to account for uncertainty in ensemble climate projections. However, the effectiveness of such subsets has seldom been assessed for the estimations of either the mean or the spread of the full ensembles. We assessed two different approaches that were employed to select 5 GCMs from a 20-member ensemble of GCMs from the CMIP5 ensemble for projecting canola and spring wheat yields across Canada under RCP 4.5 and 8.5 emission scenarios in the periods 2040–2069 and 2070–2099, based on crop simulation models. Averages and spreads of the simulated crop yields using the 5-GCM subsets selected by T&P and KKZ approaches were compared with the full 20-GCM ensemble. Our results showed that the 5-GCM subsets selected by the two approaches could produce full-ensemble means with a relative absolute error of 2.9–4.7% for canola and 1.5–2.2% for spring wheat, and covers 61.8–91.1% and 66.1–80.8% of the full-ensemble spread for canola and spring wheat, respectively. Our results also demonstrated that both approaches were very likely to outperform a subset of randomly selected 5 GCMs in terms of a smaller error and a larger range.

11. A clinical scoring system for predicting tumor recurrence after percutaneous radiofrequency ablation for 3 cm or less hepatocellular carcinoma

Abstract Preoperative prediction of tumor recurrence after radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in patients with early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is helpful for clinical decision-making before treatment. A total of 162 patients with HCC of 3 cm or less who were completely ablated by percutaneous RFA were divided into a derivation cohort (n = 108) and a validation cohort (n = 54). Based on X-Tiles software, Kaplan–Meier curve analysis and COX multivariate analysis to obtain valuable predictive indicators, a clinical scoring system for predicting tumor recurrence was established. In the verall cohort, derivation cohort and validation cohort, we found circulating tumor cells (CTC) > 2/3.2 mL, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) > 20 ng/mL, and des-γ-carboxyprothrombin (DCP) > 40 mAU/mL, maximum tumor diameter > 20 mm, and the number of multiple tumors (≥ 2) are independent risk factors affecting tumor recurrence. Each independent risk factor was assigned a score of 1 to construct a predictive clinical scoring system, and X-Tiles software was used to divide the clinical score into a low-risk group (0 score–1 score), a medium-risk group (2 scores–3 scores), and a high-risk group (4 scores–5 scores). 12. Patch selection by bumble bees navigating discontinuous landscapes

Abstract Pollen and nectar resources are unevenly distributed over space and bees must make routing decisions when navigating patchy resources. Determining the patch selection process used by bees is crucial to understanding bee foraging over discontinuous landscapes. To elucidate this process, we developed four distinct probability models of bee movement where the size and the distance to the patch determined the attractiveness of a patch. A field experiment with a center patch and four peripheral patches of two distinct sizes and distances from the center was set up in two configurations. Empirical transition probabilities from the center to each peripheral patch were obtained at two sites and two years. The best model was identified by comparing observed and predicted transition probabilities, where predicted values were obtained by incorporating the spatial dimensions of the field experiment into each model’s mathematical expression. Bumble bees used both patch size and isolation distance when selecting a patch and could assess the total amount of resources available in a patch. Bumble bees prefer large, nearby patches. This information will facilitate the development of a predictive framework to the study of bee movement and of models that predict the movement of genetically engineered pollen in bee-pollinated crops.

13. Novel strategy of remote magnetic navigation-guided ablation for ventricular arrhythmias from right ventricle outflow tract

Abstract The optimized strategy to further increase the success rate of ablation for ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) from the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) is challenging. Recent studies have shown that the pulmonary sinus cusp (PSC) region may be the origin of certain RVOT VAs. We evaluated the efficacy of preferential ablation below the pulmonary valve (PV) and alternated radiofrequency delivery in the PSC using remote magnetic navigation (RMN). Sixty-five (65) consecutive patients experiencing VAs with RVOT-like appearance were included in this study. Mapping and ablation were preferentially performed below the PV. Ablation in the PSC would only be attempted when intensified ablation below the PV could not eliminate VAs. Finally, if ablation in the RVOT region failed, the aortic sinus cusp (ASC) would be mapped. Sixty-one (61) of 65 (93.8%) patients achieved procedural success. Except 7 cases of which the VAs were ablated in the ASC, the rest 54 VAs were thought to be originate from the RVOT region. Fifty (50) of 54 VAs were successfully ablated below the PV, and in the presence of a local special signal in the bipolar electrogram a more aggressive ablation was required. Subsequent ablation in the PSC with assistance of the RMN system achieved success in the remaining 4 patients. No complications occurred in this study. Our strategy of using RMN-guided ablation below the PV for VAs of RVOT origin was proved to be effective. PSC mapping and ablation using a magnetic catheter may provide the optimal strategy for treating these types of arrhythmias.

Abstract Improving the photovoltaic performance directly by innovative device architectures contributes much progress in the field of organic solar cells. Photovoltaic device using different kinds of heterojunction with the given set of organic semiconductors paves the way to a better understanding of the working mechanism of organic heterojunction. Here, we report on the fabrication of a new device structure without employing extra material. A thin film of the donor material (chloroaluminum phthalocyanine (ClAlPc)) is inserted between ClAlPc:C60 bulk heterojunction (BHJ) and C60 layer by glancing angle deposition. A ClAlPc/C60 planar heterojunction co-exists with ClAlPc:C60 BHJ simultaneously in this device. Higher efficiency is obtained with this novel device structure. The effects of this additional ClAlPc layer on open-circuit voltage and fill factor in photovoltaic cells are studied. This work provides a new route to improve the device performance of organic solar cells.

Abstract It is generally believed that drug resistance among treated tuberculosis (TB) patients is as a result of acquired drug resistance due to inappropriate treatment. Previous studies have shown that primary drug resistance caused by transmission also plays a role among treated cases. Differentiating the two types of drug resistance will help in developing appropriate strategies for control of drug resistant tuberculosis. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that drug resistance among treated TB patients is mainly caused by primary resistance rather than acquired resistance. Defining resistance profiles by molecular drug susceptibility test, we used Unit Variable Number Tandem Repeats (VNTR) to genotype and Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) to confirm the accordance of the first and last Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates from treated pulmonary TB patients in Shanghai from 2009–2015. Among 81 patients with increasing drug resistance, out of 390 patients enrolled, paired isolates from 59.3% (48/81) had different VNTR patterns indicating primary drug resistance. Our results have demonstrated that primary resistance due to exogenous reinfection is the major cause of drug resistance among treated TB patients in Shanghai; thus, strategies aimed at preventing and interrupting transmission are urgently needed to effectively reduce the epidemic of drug resistant tuberculosis.

17. Advanced redox flow fuel cell using ferric chloride as main catalyst for complete conversion from carbohydrates to electricity

Abstract Liquid catalyzed fuel cell (LCFC) is a kind of redox flow fuel cell directly converting carbohydrates to electricity. To improve its efficiency, ferric chloride (FeCl3) was introduced as main catalyst. As mono catalyst, phosphomolybdic acid (PMo12) was much better than phosphotungstic acid (PW12) and FeCl3 was intermediate between them. Compared with PMo12 at the optimal dose of 0.30 mol/L, the combination of FeCl3 (1.00 mol/L) and PW12 (0.06 mol/L) achieved similar power output from glucose (2.59 mW/cm2) or starch (1.57 mW/cm2), and even improved the maximum power density by 57% from 0.46 to 0.72 mW/cm2 when using cellulose as the fuel. Long-term continuous operation of the LCFC indicated that carbohydrates can be hydrolyzed to glucose and then oxidized stepwise to carbon dioxide. At the latter stage, there was a linear relationship between the electron transfer number from glucose to catalyst and the subsequent cell performance. Based on these findings, the contribution of FeCl3 to LCFC should be derived from the accelerated hydrolysis and oxidation of carbohydrates and the enhanced electron transfer from glucose to anode. The addition of FeCl3 reduced the usage of polyoxometalates by 80%, and the replacement implied that LCFC can be operated less toxically and more economically.

Abstract During China’s urbanization process, rural labor migrants have been suggested to be one important bridge population to change urban-rural distribution on tuberculosis (TB) burden. Aiming to estimate the prevalence of TB infection and to track the active disease development in rural labor migrants, a prospective study was conducted in Shenzhen city, southern China. TB infection was detected using interferon-γ release assay (IGRA). Here we mainly report the characteristics of TB infection in the study population based on the baseline survey. A total of 4,422 eligible participants completed baseline survey in July 2013. QuantiFERON (QFT) positivity rates 17.87% (790/4,422) and was found to be consistent with the local TB epidemic of the areas where the participants immigrated from. Age, smoking, residence registered place, and present of BCG scars were found to be independently associated with QFT positivity.
