Activating antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) by targeting claudin-18 isoform 2 (CLDN18.2) using zolbetuximab, a monoclonal antibody against CLDN18.2, has been considered a promising novel therapeutic strategy for gastric cancer (GC). However, the impact of CLDN18.2 expression on natural killer (NK) cells and monocytes/macrophages-crucial effector cells of ADCC-in GC has not been fully investigated. In the present study, we assessed the impact of CLDN18.2 expression on clinical outcomes, molecular features, and the frequencies of tumor-infiltrating NK cells and macrophages, as well as peripheral blood NK cells and monocytes, in GC by analyzing our own GC cohorts. The expression of CLDN18.2 did not significantly impact clinical outcomes of GC patients, while it was significantly and positively associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) status and PD-L1 expression. The frequencies of tumor-infiltrating NK cells and macrophages, as well as peripheral blood NK cells and monocytes, were comparable between CLDN18.2-positive and CLDN18.2-negative GCs. Importantly, both CLDN18.2 expression and the number of tumor-infiltrating NK cells were significantly higher in EBV-associated GC compared to other molecular subtypes. Our findings support the effectiveness of zolbetuximab in CLDN18.2-positive GC, and offer a novel insight into the treatment of this cancer type, highlighting its potential effectiveness for CLDN18.2-positive/EBV-associated GC., (© 2024. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the in vitro activity of tedizolid against several clinically significant species of Nocardia by comparing with that of linezolid. A total of 286 isolates of Nocardia species, including 236 clinical isolates recovered from patients in Japan and 50 strains (43 species) purchased from NITE Biological Resource Center, were studied. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using the broth microdilution method. For the 286 Nocardia isolates, the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) 50 and MIC 90 values of tedizolid were 0.25 and 0.5 μg/ml, and those of linezolid were 2 and 2 μg/ml, respectively. The distribution of the linezolid/tedizolid ratios (MICs of linezolid/MICs of tedizolid) showed that tedizolid had four- to eight-fold higher activity than linezolid in 96.1% (275/286) of Nocardia isolates. Both the tedizolid and linezolid MIC 90 values for Nocardia brasiliensis were two-fold higher than those for the other Nocardia species. Both tedizolid and linezolid had low MIC values, 0.25-1 μg/ml and 0.5-4 μg/ml, respectively, even against nine isolates (five species) that were resistant to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. The limited number of agricultural extension agents (EAs) in sub-Saharan Africa limits farmers' access to extension services. Artificial intelligence (AI) assistants could potentially aid in providing answers to farmers' questions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of an AI chatbot assistant (ChatGPT) to provide quality responses to farmers' questions. We compiled a list of 32 questions related to irrigated rice cultivation from farmers in Kano State, Nigeria. Six EAs from the state were randomly selected to answer these questions. Their answers, along with those of ChatGPT, were assessed by four evaluators in terms of quality and local relevancy. Overall, chatbot responses were rated significantly higher quality than EAs' responses. Chatbot responses received the best score nearly six times as often as the EAs' (40% vs. 7%). The evaluators preferred chatbot responses to EAs in 78% of cases. The topics for which the chatbot responses received poorer scores than those by EAs included planting time, seed rate, and fertilizer application rate and timing. In conclusion, while the chatbot could offer an alternative source for providing agricultural advisory services to farmers, incorporating site-specific input rate-and-timing agronomic practices into AI assistants is critical for their direct use by farmers., (© 2024. Antibody tests are used as surveillance tools for informing health policy making. However, results may vary by type of antibody assay and timing of sample collection following infection. Long-term longitudinal cohort studies on antibody assay seropositivity have remained limited, especially among Asian populations. Using blood samples obtained at health physicals (2020-2022) of healthcare workers (mass vaccinated with mRNA COVID-19 vaccines) at a Japanese medical center, we measured N-specific antibodies using two commercially available systems. Roche Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 measures total antibodies and Abbott Alinity SARS-CoV-2 IgG measures only IgG. Among 2538 participants, seroprevalence was found to be 16.6% via total antibody assay versus 12.9% by IgG-only (including grayzone) by mid-June 2022. For 219 cases with a previous PCR-confirmed infection, positivity was 97.3% using total antibody assay versus 76.3% using IgG-only assay at the 2022 health physical. Using PCR positive test date as day 0, while the positivity of the total antibody assay was retained for the entire study period (until more than 24-months post-infection), the IgG-only assay's positivity declined after month 4. The Mantel-Haenszel test found a significant difference in the two assays' seropositivity, between stratified groups of "within 3 months" and "4 months or more" from infection (P < 0.001). Our study found significant differences in seropositivity over time of total antibody versus IgG-only assays, suggesting an optimal assay for retaining sensitivity over the entire infection period when designing seroprevalence studies., (© 2024. This study aimed to investigate the lesion and endoscopist factors associated with unintentional endoscopic piecemeal mucosal resection (uniEPMR) of colorectal lesions ≥ 10 mm. uniEPMR was defined from the medical record as anything other than a preoperatively planned EPMR. Factors leading to uniEPMR were identified by retrospective univariate and multivariate analyses of lesions ≥ 10 mm (adenoma including sessile serrated lesion and carcinoma) that were treated with endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) at three hospitals. Additionally, a questionnaire survey was conducted to determine the number of cases treated by each endoscopist. A learning curve (LC) was created for each lesion size based on the number of experienced cases and the percentage of uniEPMR. Of 2557 lesions, 327 lesions underwent uniEPMR. The recurrence rate of uniEPMR was 2.8%. Multivariate analysis showed that lesion diameter ≥ 30 mm (odds ratio 11.83, 95% confidence interval 6.80-20.60, p < 0.0001) was the most associated risk factor leading to uniEPMR. In the LC analysis, the proportion of uniEPMR decreased for lesion sizes of 10-19 mm until 160 cases. The proportion of uniEPMR decreased with the number of experienced cases in the 20-29 mm range, while there was no correlation between the number of experienced cases and the proportion of uniEPMR ≥ 30 mm. These results suggest that 160 cases seem to be the minimum number of cases needed to be proficient in en bloc EMR. Additionally, while lesion sizes of 10-29 mm are considered suitable for EMR, lesion sizes ≥ 30 mm are not applicable for en bloc EMR from the perspective of both lesion and endoscopist factors., (© 2024. The renal angina index (RAI) is a validated scoring tool for predicting acute kidney injury (AKI). We investigated the efficacy of the RAI in 2436 heterogeneous patients (mean age, 70 years) treated in cardiac intensive care units (CICUs). The RAI was calculated from creatinine and patient condition scores. AKI was diagnosed by the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcome criteria. The primary and secondary endpoints were the development of severe AKI and all-cause mortality, respectively. Four hundred thirty-three patients developed AKI, 87 of them severe. In multivariate analyses, the RAI was a significant independent predictor of severe AKI. During the 12-month follow-up period, 210 patients suffered all-cause death. Elevated RAI was independently associated with all-cause mortality, as was NT-proBNP (p < 0.001). The RAI is a potent predictor not only of severe AKI but also of adverse outcomes and substantially improved the 12-month risk stratification of patients hospitalized in CICUs., (© 2024. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has spread rapidly worldwide. To prevent its spread, mRNA-based vaccines made by Pfizer/BioNTech (BNT162b1) and Moderna (mRNA-1273) have been widely used, including in Japan. Various adverse events have been reported following the COVID-19 mRNA vaccination, with differences observed among individuals. However, analyses of the genetic background associated with the susceptibility to side effects have been limited. In the present study, we performed genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for self-reported adverse events of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccination in 4545 Japanese individuals and identified 14 associated loci. Among these, 6p21 was associated with 37.5 °C or higher fever, 38 °C or higher fever, and muscle pain. HLA allele association analysis revealed that various HLA alleles were associated with the adverse effects; HLA-DQA1*03:01 and HLA-A*11:01 were more reliably associated with the adverse effects. Our results may enable the preparation and management of adverse effects by identifying the susceptibility to these adverse events. The mechanism of metachronous recurrence (MR) after performing endoscopic treatment for early gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC) and eradicating Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is unknown. To elucidate the mechanism and risk factors of MR, we analyzed gene expression at multiple locations of the gastric mucosa. We selected each five patients with MR and without MR (control), after early GAC treatment and eradication of H. pylori. Mucosal tissue was collected from four sites in the stomach of each patient as biopsy specimens for mRNA sequencing, gene set enrichment analysis, and microRNA (miRNA) sequencing. We also performed correlation analysis and target prediction on pathways. As a result, endoscopically, the MR group had more intestinal metaplasia and enlarged folds. A total of 384 mRNAs presented changes in expression and 31 gene sets were enriched in the MR group. Immune-related pathways were enriched in the entire stomach, and the IFN-α response had the highest enrichment score. Additionally, 32 miRNAs revealed changes in their expression. Correlation analysis and target prediction with genes in the gene set of IFN-α response revealed that 10 miRNA-mRNA pairs presented a significant correlation. In vivo deuterated water ( 2 H 2 O) labeling leads to deuterium ( 2 H) incorporation into biomolecules of proliferating cells and provides the basis for its use in cell kinetics research. We hypothesized that rapidly proliferating cancer cells would become preferentially labeled with 2 H and, therefore, could be visualized by deuterium magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) following a brief period of in vivo systemic 2 H 2 O administration. We initiated systemic 2 H 2 O administration in two xenograft mouse models harboring either human colorectal, HT-29, or pancreatic, MiaPaCa-2, tumors and 2 H 2 O level of ~ 8% in total body water (TBW). Three schemas of 2 H 2 O administration were tested: (1) starting at tumor seeding and continuing for 7 days of in vivo growth with imaging on day 7, (2) starting at tumor seeding and continuing for 14 days of in vivo growth with imaging on day 14, and (3) initiation of labeling following a week of in vivo tumor growth and continuing until imaging was performed on day 14. Deuterium chemical shift imaging of the tumor bearing limb and contralateral control was performed on either day 7 of 14 after tumor seeding, as described. After 14 days of in vivo tumor growth and 7 days of systemic labeling with 2 H 2 O, a clear deuterium contrast was demonstrated between the xenografts and normal tissue. Labeling in the second week after tumor implantation afforded the highest contrast between neoplastic and healthy tissue in both models. Many molecular targeted agents, including biologics, have emerged for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), but their high prices have prevented their widespread use. This study aimed to reveal the changes in patient characteristics and the therapeutic strategies of IBD before and after the implementation of biologics in Japan, where the unique health insurance system allows patients with IBD and physicians to select drugs with minimum patient expenses. The analysis was performed using a prospective cohort, including IBD expert and nonexpert hospitals in Japan. In this study, patients were classified into two groups according to the year of diagnosis based on infliximab implementation as the prebiologic and biologic era groups. The characteristics of therapeutic strategies in both groups were evaluated using association analysis. This study analyzed 542 ulcerative colitis (UC) and 186 Crohn's disease (CD). The biologic era included 53.3% of patients with UC and 76.2% with CD, respectively. The age of UC (33.9 years vs. 38.8 years, P < 0.001) or CD diagnosis (24.3 years vs. 31.9 years, P < 0.001) was significantly higher in the biologic era group. The association analysis of patients with multiple drug usage histories revealed that patients in the prebiologic era group selected anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α agents, whereas those in the biologic era group preferred biologic agents with different mechanisms other than anti-TNF-α. Deferral of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for functionally insignificant stenosis, defined as fractional flow reserve (FFR) > 0.80, is associated with favorable long-term prognoses. The lower-the-better strategy for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) management is an established non-angioplasty therapy to improve the clinical outcomes of patients undergoing PCI. We examined the optimal LDL-C management in cases of intermediate coronary stenosis with deferred PCI on the basis of FFR values. This observational study included 273 consecutive patients with a single target vessel and deferred PCI with an FFR > 0.80. Patients with an FFR of 0.81-0.85 (n = 93) and those with FFR > 0.85 (n = 180) were classified into the lower (< 100 mg/dL) and higher (≥ 100 mg/dL) LDL-C groups. The endpoint was major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE), including death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, heart failure hospitalization, and unplanned revascularization. Patients with an FFR of 0.81-0.85 had a significantly higher MACCE rate than those with an FFR > 0.85 (log-rank, p = 0.003). In patients with an FFR of 0.81-0.85, the lower LDL-C group showed a significantly lower MACCE rate than the higher LDL-C group (log-rank, p = 0.006). However, the event rate did not differ significantly between the two groups in patients with FFR > 0.85 (log-rank, p = 0.84). Uncontrolled LDL-C levels were associated with higher MACCE rates in cases with deferred PCI due to an FFR of 0.81-0.85. Anti-Cytotoxic T-Lymphocyte Associated protein 4 agents, such as ipilimumab, are widely applied to various cancers. However, they cause immune-related adverse effects throughout the body, including the eye. This study examined whether ipilimumab induces retinal and choroidal abnormalities in rodents, and investigated potential underlying mechanisms. Female wild-type mice were injected with ipilimumab three times/week for 5 weeks. The mice underwent optical coherence tomography (OCT) on the first day of the 6th week. Retinal function and morphology were evaluated by light microscopy, immunohistochemistry and electroretinography (ERG). On OCT, the lines indicating the ellipsoid and interdigitation were obscure in treated mice, suggesting outer retina destruction. Haematoxylin-eosin staining revealed destruction, shortening, and outer segment vacuolization. Treated mice exhibited weaker, fragmented rhodamine peanut agglutinin staining in outer photoreceptor structures. The choroid of treated mice showed severe infiltration of CD45-positive cells. In addition, CD8-positive cells invaded into the outer retina. On ERG, rod, maximum responses of combined rods and cones, and cone response wave amplitudes were significantly reduced in treated mice. Ipilimumab may induce impairments in outer photoreceptor architecture accompanied with CD8- positive infiltration in the retina and CD45-positive cell infiltration in the choroid, which may contribute to retinal function deterioration., (© 2023. Despite Japan's high vaccination coverage, daily numbers of new COVID-19 cases have been high. However, studies on the seroprevalence among Japanese people and the causative factors for rapid spread have remained limited. In this study, we aimed to examine the seroprevalence and associated factors in healthcare workers (HCWs) of a medical center in Tokyo using blood samples drawn at annual check-ups from 2020 to 2022. We found that of the 3,788 HCWs in 2022 (by mid-June), 669 were seropositive for N-specific antibodies (tested by Roche Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 assay); the seroprevalence surged from 0.3% in 2020 and 1.6% in 2021 to 17.7% in 2022. Notably, our study found 325 (48.6%; 325/669) cases were infected without awareness. Among those with a previously PCR-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection during the past three years, 79.0% (282/357) were found after January 2022, after the Omicron variant was first detected in Tokyo at the end of 2021. This study indicates the fast spread of the SARS-CoV-2 among HCWs during the Omicron surge in Japan. Rapid reperfusion therapy can reduce disability and death in patients with large vessel occlusion strokes (LVOS). It is crucial for emergency medical services to identify LVOS and transport patients directly to a comprehensive stroke center. Our ultimate goal is to develop a non-invasive, accurate, portable, inexpensive, and legally employable in vivo screening system for cerebral artery occlusion. As a first step towards this goal, we propose a method for detecting carotid artery occlusion using pulse wave measurements at the left and right carotid arteries, feature extraction from the pulse waves, and occlusion inference using these features. To meet all of these requirements, we use a piezoelectric sensor. We hypothesize that the difference in the left and right pulse waves caused by reflection is informative, as LVOS is typically caused by unilateral artery occlusion. Therefore, we extracted three features that only represented the physical effects of occlusion based on the difference. For inference, we considered that the logistic regression, a machine learning technique with no complex feature conversion, is a reasonable method for clarifying the contribution of each feature. We tested our hypothesis and conducted an experiment to evaluate the effectiveness and performance of the proposed method. The method achieved a diagnostic accuracy of 0.65, which is higher than the chance level of 0.43. Mosquitoes carry lethal pathogens for humans and hundreds of thousands of people are killed by mosquito-borne diseases every year. Therefore, controlling mosquitoes is essential to protect the lives of people around the world. Insecticides are highly effective in controlling mosquitoes and have been used extensively worldwide. However, they have potentially harmful effects on biodiversity and environment, and some mosquitoes are resistant to insecticide ingredients and survive upon their application. Therefore, there is a demand for a method to control mosquitoes without using conventional insecticide ingredients. Here, we used Aedes albopictus to test whether solutions with low surface tension, particularly surfactant solutions can alter mosquito behavior by spreading over the hydrophobic cuticle of mosquitoes. We found that solutions with low surface tension indeed attached to mosquitoes flying or resting on the wall, and made them fall. In addition, solutions with yet lower surface tension covered the mosquito surface more quickly and widely, knocking down or killing mosquitoes. These results suggest that surfactants such as sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate can be used to alter mosquito behavior without relying on conventional insecticides., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

To gain a better understanding of the effects of biologics, we evaluated clinical outcomes in patients with moderate to severe exacerbations of ulcerative colitis (UC). This retrospective, multicenter study retrieved the entire clinical courses of UC patients who began treatments between 2004 and 2018. All exacerbations and clinical parameters, including treatment details for exacerbations and both remission and re-exacerbation dates, were identified during the observation period. Two different endpoints, the cumulative incidence rates of surgical resection and re-exacerbation, were evaluated separately in moderate to severe exacerbation events. Among 1401 patients, 1626 exacerbation events were determined according to a partial Mayo score (remission: < 2, mild: 2-4, moderate: 5-7, and severe: > 7). During the observation period, as administration rates of biologics increased, both surgical resection and hospitalization rates decreased, for 959 moderate to severe exacerbation events. We confirmed that biologics significantly reduced the cumulative re-exacerbation rate in moderate to severe exacerbation events during the study period compared with suboptimal therapies (a 0.507-fold decreased risk according to COX regression analysis, P < 0.001). However, they had not enough impact in reducing the cumulative incidence rate of surgical resection in moderate to severe exacerbation events that were corticosteroid-refractory or dependent (a 0.878-fold decreased risk according to COX regression analysis, P = 0.606). Our study aimed to evaluate the relationship between visceral obesity and its associated factors, especially sleep duration in East Asia. We conducted univariate and multivariate analyses using the data of 2538 participants (mean age 56.4 ± 10.8 years) who underwent medical checkups and computed tomography of the abdomen to calculate the visceral fat area from 2008 to 2020. We additionally performed logistic regression analyses using each sleep-duration group (< 5, 5-6, 6-7, 7-8, and ≥ 8 h) and their respective propensity scores as covariates. According to the criteria of visceral obesity(a visceral fat area ≥ 100 cm 2 ), 1147 of 1918 men (59.8%) and 131 of 620 women (21.1%) had visceral obesity. In multivariate analyses, visceral obesity was significantly associated with age, body mass index and triglyceride in both genders, high-density lipoproteins, uric acid levels, and daily alcohol consumption in men; and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in women. In both multivariate and propensity score matching analyses, sleep duration of > 8 h and visceral obestiy showed a positive association in men but a negative association in women with statistical significance. Drug-induced interstitial lung disease (DILD) occurs when drug exposure causes inflammation of the lung interstitium. DILD can be caused by different types of drugs, and some DILD patterns results in a high mortality rate; hence, DILD poses a serious problem in clinical practice as well as drug development, and strategies to diagnose and distinguish DILD from other lung diseases are necessary. We aimed to identify novel biomarkers for DILD by performing lipidomics analysis on plasma samples from patients with acute and recovery phase DILD. Having identified lysophosphatidylcholines (LPCs) as candidate biomarkers for DILD, we determined their concentrations using validated liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry biomarker assays. In addition, we evaluated the ability of LPCs to discriminate patients with acute phase DILD from those with recovery phase DILD, DILD-tolerant, or other lung diseases, and characterized their association with clinical characteristics. Lipidomics analysis revealed a clear decrease in LPC concentrations in the plasma of patients with acute phase DILD. In particular, LPC(14:0) had the highest discriminative index against recovery phase and DILD-tolerant patients. LPC(14:0) displayed no clear association with causal drugs, or subjects' backgrounds, but was associated with disease severity. Furthermore, LPC(14:0) was able to discriminate between patients with DILD and other lung diseases, including idiopathic interstitial pneumonia and lung disease associated with connective tissue disease. The relatively stable aquatic conditions of irrigated lowland and rainfed rice, which is grown across 145 million hectares in more than 100 countries, are capable of generating large numbers of mosquito vectors of malaria, which causes more than 400,000 deaths per year worldwide. Many methods can control these vectors, but a systematic review has not previously been conducted. This study assesses whether larviciding, fish or intermittent irrigation can significantly reduce malaria vectors in rice fields whilst increasing rice yield. After a literature search for studies reporting the effect of larval control and rice cultivation practices on malaria vector densities in rice fields, 33 studies were eligible for meta-analysis. Larviciding was effective at reducing rice-field malaria vectors. Pooled analysis of five controlled time-series (CTS) studies with chemical insecticides showed an overall combined reduction of larval densities of 77% compared to no larviciding. Eight CTSs with biological larvicides showed a pooled reduction of 60% compared to no larviciding. Cultivating rice and fish together provided good control too: a pooled analysis of three CTSs showed an overall 82% reduction in anopheline larvae compared to no fish. Pooled analysis of four studies suggested that intermittent irrigation (using various timings and frequencies of drainage) is effective at reducing the abundance of late-stage anopheline larvae (pooled reduction = - 35%), but not overall immature abundance, compared to continuous flooding. We conclude that many interventions such as larvicides, fish and intermittent irrigation can provide riceland malaria vector control, but the critical obstacle to wider use is farmer acceptability. Future research should be led by the agricultural sector, with inputs from entomologists, to investigate malaria control co-benefits within high-yielding rice cultivation practices., (© 2022. It is unknown whether higher functions in sublevels of competence other than instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) are associated with vaccinations. This study examined whether higher functions, including intellectual activity (IA) and social role (SR), were associated with vaccinations among 26,177 older adults. Older adults with incapable activities in IA and SR had increased risks for non-receipt of influenza vaccinations (IA: for one incapable task/activity: incident rate ratio (IRR) = 1.05, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.02-1.09; SR: for two incapable tasks: IRR = 1.12, 95% CI = 1.08-1.16). Those with incapable activities in IADL and IA had increased risks for non-receipt of pneumococcal vaccination (IADL: for two incapable tasks: IRR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.05-1.23; IA: for two incapable tasks: IRR = 1.10, 95% CI = 1.08-1.12). Those with incapable activities in IADL, IA, and SR had increased risks for non-receipt of both of the two vaccinations (IADL: for two incapable tasks: IRR = 1.17, 95% CI = 1.03-1.33; IA: for two incapable tasks: IRR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.11-1.25; SR: for two incapable tasks: IRR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.07-1.20). In this study, the rotation of liquid crystal droplets induced by elliptically polarized laser light was investigated using optical tweezers. The rotation mechanism was analyzed based on the arrangement of liquid crystal molecules within the droplets. The change in the rotation behavior of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) droplets was evaluated by varying the droplet size. The experimental results were analyzed based on the waveplate effect and light-scattering process. The rotation behavior of cholesteric liquid crystal droplets was examined by varying the droplet size and helical pitch, which was controlled by the chiral dopant concentration. The results are discussed in terms of the selective reflection of the incident beam by the helical structure. The dependence of the rotation frequency on the ellipticity of the incident beam was also studied. The main contribution to the rotation gradually changes from light transmission to reflection with increasing chirality of the droplet. An NLC rotator system was constructed using holographic optical tweezers. Such an optically controllable rotator is a typical micro-optomechanical device. COVID-19 antibody testing has been developed to investigate humoral immune response in SARS-CoV-2 infection. To assess the serological dynamics and neutralizing potency following SARS-CoV-2 infection, we investigated the neutralizing (NT) antibody, anti-spike, and anti-nucleocapsid antibodies responses using a total of 168 samples obtained from 68 SARS-CoV-2 infected patients. Antibodies were measured using an authentic virus neutralization assay, the high-throughput laboratory measurements of the Abbott Alinity quantitative anti-spike receptor-binding domain IgG (S-IgG), semiquantitative anti-spike IgM (S-IgM), and anti-nucleocapsid IgG (N-IgG) assays. The quantitative measurement of S-IgG antibodies was well correlated with the neutralizing activity detected by the neutralization assay (r = 0.8943, p &lt; 0.0001). However, the kinetics of the SARS-CoV-2 NT antibody in severe cases were slower than that of anti-S and anti-N specific antibodies. These findings indicate a limitation of using the S-IgG antibody titer, detected by the chemiluminescent immunoassay, as a direct quantitative marker of neutralizing activity capacity. Loss-of-function homozygous or compound heterozygous mutations in IL36RN, which encodes interleukin-36 receptor antagonist (IL-36Ra), have been implicated in the pathogenesis of skin disorders. We previously reported that Il36rn -/- mice exhibit an enhanced contact hypersensitivity (CHS) response through increased neutrophil recruitment. In addition, Il36rn -/- mice show severe imiquimod-induced psoriatic skin lesions and enhanced neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation. We hypothesized that NETs may play an important role in the CHS response. To confirm this, we examined the CHS response and NET formation in Il36rn -/- mice. Il36rn -/- mice showed enhanced CHS responses, increased infiltration of inflammatory cells, including neutrophils, CD4 + T cells, and CD8 + T cells, NET formation, and enhanced mRNA expression of cytokines and chemokines, including IL-1β, C-X-C motif chemokine ligand (CXCL)1, CXCL2, and IL-36γ. Furthermore, NET formation blockade improved the CHS response, which consequently decreased inflammatory cell infiltration and NET formation. Consistently, we observed decreased expression of these cytokines and chemokines. These findings indicate that IL-36Ra deficiency aggravates the CHS response caused by excessive inflammatory cell recruitment, NET formation, and cytokine and chemokine production, and that NET formation blockade alleviates the CHS response. Artificial intelligence (AI) applications in medical imaging continue facing the difficulty in collecting and using large datasets. One method proposed for solving this problem is data augmentation using fictitious images generated by generative adversarial networks (GANs). However, applying a GAN as a data augmentation technique has not been explored, owing to the quality and diversity of the generated images. To promote such applications by generating diverse images, this study aims to generate free-form lesion images from tumor sketches using a pix2pix-based model, which is an image-to-image translation model derived from GAN. As pix2pix, which assumes one-to-one image generation, is unsuitable for data augmentation, we propose StylePix2pix, which is independently improved to allow one-to-many image generation. The proposed model introduces a mapping network and style blocks from StyleGAN. Image generation results based on 20 tumor sketches created by a physician demonstrated that the proposed method can reproduce tumors with complex shapes. This pilot study aimed to investigate the utility of texture and color enhancement imaging (TXI) with magnified endoscopy (ME) for the preoperative diagnosis of superficial nonampullary duodenal epithelial tumors (SNADETs). We prospectively evaluated 12 SNADETs. The visibility for ME-TXI, ME with indigo carmine (ICME)-white-light imaging (WLI), ICME-TXI compared to ME-NBI (narrow-band imaging) was scored (+ 2 to - 2 ME-NBI was set as score 0) by 3 experts. Scores + 2 and + 1 were defined as improved visibility. The intra-observer and interobserver agreement for improved visibility of surface structure (SS) was evaluated. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value (PPV) for Vienna Classification (VCL) C4/5 associated with the preoperative diagnosis of ICME-TXI were analyzed. The SS visibility score of ICME-TXI was significantly higher than that of ME-NBI, ME-TXI, and ICME-WLI (P < 0.001 respectively). The kappa coefficients of reliability for intra-observer and interobserver agreement for the SS visibility improvement with ICME-TXI were 0.96, 1.00, 1.00 and 0.70, 0.96, 0.96 respectively. All endoscopists preferred ICME-TXI for visualizing SS mostly for all lesions. The sensitivity, specificity, and PPV (%) of ICME-TXI for VCL C4/5 were 80, 66.7, and 63.2, respectively. X-linked sideroblastic anemia (XLSA), the most common form of congenital sideroblastic anemia, is caused by a germline mutation in the erythroid-specific 5-aminolevulinate synthase (ALAS2) gene. In XLSA, defective heme biosynthesis leads to ring sideroblast formation because of excess mitochondrial iron accumulation. In this study, we introduced ALAS2 missense mutations on human umbilical cord blood-derived erythroblasts; hereafter, we refer to them as XLSA clones. XLSA clones that differentiated into mature erythroblasts showed an increased frequency of ring sideroblast formation with impaired hemoglobin biosynthesis. The expression profiling revealed significant enrichment of genes involved in ferroptosis, which is a form of regulated cell death induced by iron accumulation and lipid peroxidation. Notably, treatment with erastin, a ferroptosis inducer, caused a higher proportion of cell death in XLSA clones. XLSA clones exhibited significantly higher levels of intracellular lipid peroxides and enhanced expression of BACH1, a regulator of iron metabolism and potential accelerator of ferroptosis. In XLSA clones, BACH1 repressed genes involved in iron metabolism and glutathione synthesis. Collectively, defective heme biosynthesis in XLSA clones could confer enhanced BACH1 expression, leading to increased susceptibility to ferroptosis. In 2020, we reported a low seroprevalence of N-specific antibodies in 4147 health care workers (HCWs) at a frontline hospital in Tokyo, Japan. In Japan, a vaccine campaign was launched in early 2021. We re-evaluated seroprevalences of N- and S-specific antibodies in 2202 HCWs who took two doses of the BNT162b2 vaccine. In 2021, N-specific seroprevalence remains as low as 1.59%. The seroprevalences were comparable among all HCWs regardless of exposure levels. Almost all of the HCWs elicited S-specific antibodies after vaccination. However, the HCWs who had COVID-19 elicited higher S-specific antibody titers than those who did not have COVID-19. In the HCWs without a history of COVID-19, 1.1% (23 out of 2185) were seropositive with N-specific antibodies, indicating the existence of asymptomatic infections. Also, S-specific antibody titers were higher in females and younger HCWs, and in those who had severe side effects. However, S-specific antibody titers were lower depending on the number of days after the second dose of vaccination specifically in elderly individuals. In conclusion, this study indicates N-specific seroprevalence remains low in HCWs at a frontline hospital in Tokyo. Purpose in life is anchored as a goal in national health promotion plans in several countries. Health literacy is the ability to find, understand, use, and evaluate health-related information; this ability has been investigated in terms of its effect on health outcomes and is said to play a critical role in health promotion. In the context of national health promotion, the effect of health literacy on purpose in life and life satisfaction remains unclear; therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of health literacy. A cross-sectional study was conducted on Japanese health management specialists (N = 1920). Health literacy was measured using the Communicative and Critical Health Literacy scale. Purpose in life and life satisfaction were measured using the Ikigai-9 scale and a Likert scale, respectively. We analyzed the associations between health literacy and purpose in life and life satisfaction with regression analyses. Age, sex, income, education, marital status, psychological stress, and diseases as present illness were adjusted in the statistical models. Our multiple linear regressions indicated that health literacy was significantly associated with purpose in life (β = 0.199, p < 0.001), after adjusting for covariates (age, sex, income, education, marital status, psychological factor, and disease status). Life satisfaction was also significantly associated with health literacy (β = 0.126, p < 0.001). Health literacy is associated with purpose in life and life satisfaction among specialists in health management. Health literacy plays a critical role in lifestyle-related disease prevention and health promotion. Organisms make decisions when they perceive cues of varying intensities. In case of climbing plants, the diameter of supports in contact (tree or stem) is an important cue for their growth as plants that coil around a support with large diameter are unable to maintain tensional forces required for continued attachment to the support. The negative association between the diameter and the climbing success has been reported since Darwin published his study on climbing plants. However, it is not known if a climbing plant makes a decision to avoid a support with larger diameter. Here, we tested this possibility by observing the coiling response of tendrils of Cayratia japonica to supports with different diameters. The coiling success of the tendrils was affected by the diameter of the support and the tendril lengths. We propose a decision tree to describe the different phases of the coiling response and demonstrated that the tendrils change their coiling shape depending on the support diameter and the tendril length. To understand the behavioural rules regulating the phase pattern, we constructed a simple model with two assumptions on the tendril movement, (1) when the tendrils receive a contact stimulus, they begin to coil from around the contact point and (2) there is a minimum coiling angle at which the tendrils coil up, once the tendril starts coiling. Image analysis and 3D motion tracking technique revealed that the movement of the tendrils were consistent with the two assumptions of the model. The results suggested that the tendrils flexibly changed the coiling shapes depending on the support diameter and simple behavioural rules could regulate this diameter-dependent response., (© 2022. Although postural hypotension (PH) is reportedly associated with mortality in the general population, the prognostic value for heart failure is unclear. This was a post-hoc analysis of FRAGILE-HF, a prospective multicenter observational study focusing on frailty in elderly patients with heart failure. Overall, 730 patients aged ≥ 65 years who were hospitalized with heart failure were enrolled. PH was defined by evaluating seated PH, and was defined as a fall of ≥ 20 mmHg in systolic and/or ≥ 10 mmHg in diastolic blood pressure within 3 min after transition from a supine to sitting position. The study endpoints were all-cause death and heart failure readmission at 1 year. Predictive variables for the presence of PH were also evaluated. PH was observed in 160 patients (21.9%). Patients with PH were more likely than those without PH to be male with a New York Heart Association classification of III/IV. Logistic regression analysis showed that male sex, severe heart failure symptoms, and lack of administration of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors were independently associated with PH. PH was not associated with 1-year mortality, but was associated with a lower incidence of readmission after discharge after adjustment for other covariates. To implement precision oncology, analytical validity as well as clinical validity and utility are important. However, proficiency testing (PT) to assess validity has not yet been systematically performed in Japan. To investigate the quality of next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms and cancer genome testing prevalent in laboratories, we performed pilot PT using patient samples. We prepared genomic DNA from the cancer tissue and peripheral blood of 5 cancer patients and distributed these to 15 laboratories. Most participating laboratories successfully identified the pathogenic variants, except for two closely located KRAS variants and 25 bp delins in EGFR. Conversely, the EGFR L858R variant was successfully identified, and the allele frequency was similar for all the laboratories. A high DNA integrity number led to excellent depth and reliable NGS results. By conducting this pilot study using patient samples, we were able to obtain a glimpse of the current status of cancer genome testing at participating laboratories. Here, we aimed to evaluate the clinical performance of a novel automated immunoassay HISCL SARS-CoV-2 Antigen assay kit designed to detect the nucleocapsid (N) protein of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This kit comprises automated chemiluminescence detection systems. Western blot analysis confirmed that anti-SARS-CoV antibodies detected SARS-CoV-2N proteins. The best cut-off index was determined, and clinical performance was tested using 115 serum samples obtained from 46 patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and 69 individuals who tested negative for COVID-19 through reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). The HISCL Antigen assay kit showed a sensitivity of 95.4% and 16.6% in samples with copy numbers > 100 and < 99, respectively. The kit did not cross-react with human coronaviruses causing seasonal common cold and influenza, and none of the 69 individuals without COVID-19 were diagnosed with positive results. Importantly, 81.8% of the samples with low virus load (< 50 copy numbers) were diagnosed as negative. Thus, using HISCL antigen assay kits may reduce overdiagnosis compared with RT-qPCR tests. The aim of this study was to clarify risk factors for esophageal candidiasis (EC) in immunocompetent patients in a community hospital. 7736 patients who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy at our hospital from April 2012 to July 2018 were enrolled. The relationships between EC and the following factors: age, gender, body mass index, lifestyle, lifestyle-related diseases, medication, and endoscopic findings were analyzed. EC was observed in 184 of 7736 cases (2.4% morbidity rate). Multivariate analysis revealed that significant risk factors for the development of EC were: diabetes mellitus {odds ratio (OR): 1.52}, proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use (OR: 1.69), atrophic gastritis (AG) (OR: 1.60), advanced gastric cancer (OR: 4.66), and gastrectomy (OR: 2.32). When severe EC (Kodsi grade ≥ II) was compared to mild EC (grade I), the most significant risk factors were advanced gastric cancer (OR: 17.6) and gastrectomy (OR: 23.4). When considering the risk of AG and PPI use with EC development, the risk increased as follows: AG (OR: 1.59), PPI use (OR: 2.25), and both (OR: 3.13). PPI use, AG, advanced gastric cancer and post-gastrectomy are critical risk factors for the development of EC. Insects have acquired various types of wings over their course of evolution and have become the most successful terrestrial animals. Consequently, the essence of their excellent environmental adaptability and locomotive ability should be clarified; a simple and versatile method to artificially reproduce the complex structure and various functions of these innumerable types of wings is necessary. This study presents a simple integral forming method for an insect-wing-type composite structure by 3D printing wing frames directly onto thin films. The artificial venation generation algorithm based on the centroidal Voronoi diagram, which can be observed in the wings of dragonflies, was used to design the complex mechanical properties of artificial wings. Furthermore, we implemented two representative functions found in actual insect wings: folding and coupling. The proposed crease pattern design software developed based on a beetle hindwing enables the 3D printing of foldable wings of any shape. In cytological examination, suspicious cells are evaluated regarding malignancy and cancer type. To assist this, we previously proposed an automated method based on supervised learning that classifies cells in lung cytological images as benign or malignant. However, it is often difficult to label all cells. In this study, we developed a weakly supervised method for the classification of benign and malignant lung cells in cytological images using attention-based deep multiple instance learning (AD MIL). Images of lung cytological specimens were divided into small patch images and stored in bags. Each bag was then labeled as benign or malignant, and classification was conducted using AD MIL. The distribution of attention weights was also calculated as a color map to confirm the presence of malignant cells in the image. AD MIL using the AlexNet-like convolutional neural network model showed the best classification performance, with an accuracy of 0.916, which was better than that of supervised learning. In addition, an attention map of the entire image based on the attention weight allowed AD MIL to focus on most malignant cells. The genetic characteristics of Barrett's esophagus (BE) and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) in the Japanese population is unclear. This study aims to investigate the genetic characteristics from nondysplastic BE (NDBE) to early EAC in Japan. Clinical information was collected. Moreover, the genetic profile of NDBE without concurrent dysplasia, early EAC, and surrounding BE were also investigated using endoscopic biopsy samples and formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded specimens from Japanese patients by targeted next-generation sequencing. Immunohistochemical staining for p53 was also performed for EAC lesions. Targeted NGS was performed for 33 cases with 77 specimens. No significant difference exists in the NDBE group between the number of putative drivers per lesion in the short-segment Barrett's esophagus (SSBE) and long-segment Barrett's esophagus (LSBE) [0 (range, 0-1) vs. 0 (range, 0-1). p = 1.00]. TP53 putative drivers were found in two patients (16.7%) with nondysplastic SSBE. TP53 was the majority of putative drivers in both BE adjacent to EAC and EAC, accounting for 66.7% and 66.7%, respectively. More putative drivers per lesion were found in the EAC than in the NDBE group [1 (range, 0-3) vs. 0 (range, 0-1). p < 0.01]. The genetic variants of TP53 in the Japanese early EAC were similar to those in western countries. However, TP53 putative drivers were detected even in Japanese patients with nondysplastic SSBE. This is significant because such nondysplastic SSBE might have higher risk of progressing to high-grade dysplasia or EAC. The transcranial Doppler method (TCD) enables the measurement of cerebral blood flow velocity and detection of emboli by applying an ultrasound probe to the temporal bone window, or the orbital or greater occipital foramina. TCD is widely used for evaluation of cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage, early detection of patients with arterial stenosis, and the assessment of brain death. However, measurements often become difficult in older women. Among various factors contributing to this problem, we focused on the effect of the diploe in the skull bone on the penetration of ultrasound into the brain. In particular, the effect of the cancellous bone structure in the diploe was investigated. Using a 2D digital bone model, wave propagation through the skull bone was investigated using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. We fabricated digital bone models with similar structure but different BV/TV (bone volume/total volume) values in the diploe. At a BV/TV of approximately 50-60% (similar to that of older women), the minimum ultrasound amplitude was observed as a result of scattering and multiple reflections in the cancellous diploe. The aims of the present study were to profile the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of a diverse range of Nocardia species isolated in Japan, and to determine the ability of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) for species/complex identification. Identification of 153 clinical isolates was performed by full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing as a reference method to evaluate the usefulness of MALDI-TOF MS identification. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) for 14 antibiotics was performed using the broth microdilution method against 146 of the isolates. Among the total 153 clinical isolates, Nocardia farcinica complex (25%) was the most common species, followed by Nocardia cyriacigeorgica (18%), Nocardia brasiliensis (9%), Nocardia nova (8%), and Nocardia otitidiscaviarum (7%). Among 150 isolates identified to the species/complex level by 16S rRNA gene sequencing, MALDI-TOF MS with the use of a supplemental Nocardia library (JMLD library ver.ML01) correctly identified 97.3% (n = 146) to the species/complex level and 1.3% (n = 2) to the genus level. Among the 146 Nocardia isolates that underwent AST, the susceptibilities were 100% to linezolid, 96% to amikacin, 94% to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and 76% to imipenem. None of the trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole-resistant isolates carried either plasmid-mediated sulfonamide-resistant genes (sul1, sul2) or trimethoprim-resistant genes (dfrA)., (© 2021. Permafrost is known to occur in high mountainous areas such as the Daisetsu Mountains in Japan, which are located at the southernmost limit of the permafrost distribution in the world. In this study, areas with climatic conditions suitable for sustaining permafrost in the Daisetsu Mountains are projected using bias-corrected and downscaled climate model outputs and statistical relationships between surface air temperatures and permafrost areas. Using freezing and thawing indices, the size of the area in the Daisetsu Mountains where climatic conditions were suitable for permafrost were estimated to be approximately 150 km 2 in 2010. Under the RCP8.5 scenario, this area is projected to decrease to about 30 km 2 by 2050 and it is projected to disappear by around 2070. Under the RCP2.6 scenario, the area is projected to decrease to approximately 20 km 2 by 2100. The degradation of mountain permafrost could potentially affect the stability of trekking trails due to slope displacement, and it may also have deleterious effects on current alpine ecosystems. It is therefore important to accurately monitor changes in the mountain ecosystem environment and to implement measures to adapt to an environment that is projected to change significantly in the future., (© 2021. Drastic sensitivity enhancement of dynamic nuclear polarization is becoming an increasingly critical methodology to monitor real-time metabolic and physiological information in chemistry, biochemistry, and biomedicine. However, the limited number of available hyperpolarized 13 C probes, which can effectively interrogate crucial metabolic activities, remains one of the major bottlenecks in this growing field. Here, we demonstrate [1- 13 C] N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) as a novel probe for hyperpolarized 13 C MRI to monitor glutathione redox chemistry, which plays a central part of metabolic chemistry and strongly influences various therapies. NAC forms a disulfide bond in the presence of reduced glutathione, which generates a spectroscopically detectable product that is separated from the main peak by a 1.5 ppm shift. In vivo hyperpolarized MRI in mice revealed that NAC was broadly distributed throughout the body including the brain. Its biochemical transformation in two human pancreatic tumor cells in vitro and as xenografts differed depending on the individual cellular biochemical profile and microenvironment in vivo. Hyperpolarized NAC can be a promising non-invasive biomarker to monitor in vivo redox status and can be potentially translatable to clinical diagnosis.

Frailty is a common comorbidity associated with adverse events in patients with heart failure, and early recognition is key to improving its management. We hypothesized that the AST to ALT ratio (AAR) could be a marker of frailty in patients with heart failure. Data from the FRAGILE-HF study were analyzed. A total of 1327 patients aged ≥ 65 years hospitalized with heart failure were categorized into three groups based on their AAR at discharge: low AAR (AAR < 1.16, n = 434); middle AAR (1.16 ≤ AAR < 1.70, n = 487); high AAR (AAR ≥ 1.70, n = 406). The primary endpoint was one-year mortality. The association between AAR and physical function was also assessed. High AAR was associated with lower short physical performance battery and shorter 6-min walk distance, and these associations were independent of age and sex. Logistic regression analysis revealed that high AAR was an independent marker of physical frailty after adjustment for age, sex and body mass index. During follow-up, all-cause death occurred in 161 patients. After adjusting for confounding factors, high AAR was associated with all-cause death (low AAR vs. high AAR, hazard ratio: 1.57, 95% confidence interval, 1.02-2.42; P = 0.040). In conclusion, AAR is a marker of frailty and prognostic for all-cause mortality in older patients with heart failure.

Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) is a predominant water channel expressed in astrocytes in the mammalian brain. AQP4 is crucial for the regulation of homeostatic water movement across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Although the molecular mechanisms regulating AQP4 levels in the cerebral cortex under pathological conditions have been intensively investigated, those under normal physiological conditions are not fully understood. Here we demonstrate that AQP4 is selectively expressed in astrocytes in the mouse cerebral cortex during development. BMP signaling was preferentially activated in AQP4-positive astrocytes. Furthermore, activation of BMP signaling by in utero electroporation markedly increased AQP4 levels in the cerebral cortex, and inhibition of BMP signaling strongly suppressed them. These results indicate that BMP signaling alters AQP4 levels in the mouse cerebral cortex during development.

Droplet microfluidics has emerged as a powerful technology for improving the culturing efficiency of environmental microorganisms. However, its widespread adoption has been limited due to considerable technical challenges, especially related to identification and manipulation of individual growth-positive droplets. Here, we combined microfluidic droplet technology with on-chip "fluorescent nucleic acid probe in droplets for bacterial sorting" (FNAP-sort) for recovery of growth-positive droplets and droplet microdispensing to establish an end-to-end workflow for isolation and culturing of environmental microbes. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate the ability of our technique to yield high-purity cultures of rare microorganisms from a representative complex environmental microbiome. As our system employs off-the-shelf commercially available equipment, we believe that it can be readily adopted by others and may thus find widespread use toward culturing the high proportion of as-of-yet uncultured microorganisms in different biomes.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) are highly exposed to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The actual coronavirus disease (COVID-19) situation, especially in regions that are less affected, has not yet been determined. This study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in HCWs working in a frontline hospital in Tokyo, Japan. In this cross-sectional observational study, screening was performed on consented HCWs, including medical, nursing, and other workers, as part of a mandatory health checkup. The screening test results and clinical characteristics of the participants were recorded. The antibody seroprevalence rate among the 4147 participants screened between July 6 and August 21, 2020, was 0.34% (14/4147). There was no significant difference in the seroprevalence rate between frontline HCWs with a high exposure risk and HCWs working in other settings with a low exposure risk. Of those seropositive for SARS-CoV-2, 64% (9/14) were not aware of any symptoms and had not previously been diagnosed with COVID-19. In conclusion, this study provides insights into the extent of infection and immune status in HCWs in Japan, which has a relatively low prevalence of COVID-19. Our findings aid in formulating public health policies to control virus spread in regions with low-intensity COVID-19.

In the past decade neutron dark-field contrast imaging has developed from a qualitative tool depicting microstructural inhomogeneities in bulk samples on a macroscopic scale of tens to hundreds of micrometers to a quantitative spatial resolved small-angle scattering instrument. While the direct macroscopic image resolution around tens of micrometers remains untouched microscopic structures have become assessable quantitatively from the nanometer to the micrometer range. Although it was found that magnetic structures provide remarkable contrast we could only recently introduce polarized neutron grating interferometric imaging. Here we present a polarized and polarization analyzed dark-field contrast method for spatially resolved small-angle scattering studies of magnetic microstructures. It is demonstrated how a polarization analyzer added to a polarized neutron grating interferometer does not disturb the interferometric measurements but allows to separate and measure spin-flip and non-spin-flip small-angle scattering and thus also the potential for a distinction of nuclear and different magnetic contributions in the analyzed small-angle scattering.

Pneumonia is a leading cause of mortality among older adults worldwide. Recently, several studies reported that frailty was associated with mortality among older adults hospitalized due to respiratory infectious diseases, including pneumonia. However, it is unknown whether frailty is associated with susceptibility to and severity of pneumonia in functionally-independent community-dwelling older adults. In this study, we examined whether frailty increased the susceptibility to pneumonia and hospitalization in older adults. We used cross-sectional data from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study; the data was collected by using mail-based, self-reported questionnaires from 177,991 functionally-independent community-dwelling older adults aged ≥ 65 years. Our results showed that frailty was significantly associated with both occurrence of and hospitalization due to pneumonia after adjustments with covariates; (Preference ratio {PR} 1.92, 95% confidence interval {95% CI} [1.66-2.22] and PR 1.80, 95% CI [1.42-2.28], respectively, p < 0.001 for the both). Pre-frailty was associated only with the occurrence of pneumonia. Besides, the instrumental activity of daily living, physical strength, nutrition status, oral function, homeboundness, and depression status in frail older adults were associated with either or both occurrence of and hospitalization due to pneumonia. Our results suggest that frailty influenced the susceptibility to and severity of pneumonia in older adults.
