The purpose of this work is to evaluate the performance of applying patient dosimetric information induced by individual uniform-intensity radiation fields in organ-at risk (OAR) dose-volume histogram (DVH) prediction, and extend to DVH prediction of planning target volume (PTV). Ninety nasopharyngeal cancer intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) plans and 60 rectal cancer volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plans were employed in this study. Of these, 20 nasopharyngeal cancer cases and 15 rectal cancer cases were randomly selected as the testing data. The DVH prediction was performed using two methods. One method applied the individual dose-volume histograms (IDVHs) induced by a series of fields with uniform-intensity irradiation and the other method applied the distance-to-target histogram and the conformal-plan-dose-volume histogram (DTH + CPDVH). The determination coefficient R2 and mean absolute error (MAE) were used to evaluate DVH prediction accuracy. The PTV DVH prediction was performed using the IDVHs. The PTV dose coverage was evaluated using D98, D95, D1 and uniformity index (UI). The OAR dose was compared using the maximum dose, V30 and V40. The significance of the results was examined with the Wilcoxon signed rank test. For PTV DVH prediction using IDVHs, the clinical plan and IDVHs prediction method achieved mean UI values of 1.07 and 1.06 for nasopharyngeal cancer, and 1.04 and 1.05 for rectal cancer, respectively. No significant difference was found between the clinical plan results and predicted results using the IDVHs method in achieving PTV dose coverage (D98,D95,D1 and UI) for both nasopharyngeal cancer and rectal cancer (p-values ≥ 0.052). For OAR DVH prediction, no significant difference was found between the IDVHs and DTH + CPDVH methods for the R2, MAE, the maximum dose, V30 and V40 (p-values ≥ 0.087 for all OARs). This work evaluates the performance of dosimetric information of several individual fields with uniform-intensity radiation for DVH prediction, and extends its application to PTV DVH prediction. The results indicated that the IDVHs method is comparable to the DTH + CPDVH method in accurately predicting the OAR DVH. The IDVHs method quantified the input features of the PTV and showed reliable PTV DVH prediction, which is helpful for plan quality evaluation and plan generation.

Potassium (K) is essential for plant growth and stress responses. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in adaptation to nutrient deprivation through modulating gene expression. Here, we identified the miRNAs responsive to K deficiency in Triticum aestivum based on high-throughput small RNA sequencing analyses. Eighty-nine miRNAs, including 68 previously reported ones and 21 novel ones, displayed differential expression under K deficiency. In Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia and Genome analyses, the putative target genes of the differentially expressed miRNAs were categorized into functional groups associated with ADP-binding activity, secondary metabolic pathways, and biosynthesis and metabolism. Functional characterization of tae-miR408, an miRNA significantly down-regulated under K deficiency, revealed its important role in mediating low-K tolerance. Compared with wild type, transgenic tobacco lines overexpressing tae-miR408 showed significantly improved K uptake, biomass, photosynthesis, and reactive oxygen species scavenging under K deficiency. These results show that distinct miRNAs function in the plant response to K deficiency through regulating target genes involved in energy metabolism and various secondary metabolic pathways. Our findings shed light on the plant response to K deficiency mediated by miRNAs in T. aestivum. Distinct miRNAs, such as tae-miR408, are valuable targets for generating crop varieties with improved K-use efficiency.

Regions with high electrical conductivities in subduction zones have attracted a great deal of attention. Determining the exact origin of these anomalies could provide critical information about the water storage and cycling processes during subduction. Antigorite is the most important hydrous mineral within deep subduction zones. The dehydration of antigorite is believed to cause high-conductivity anomalies. To date, the effects of dehydration on the electrical conductivity of antigorite remain poorly understood. Here, we report new measurements of the electrical conductivity of both natural and hot-pressed antigorite at pressures of 4 and 3 GPa, respectively, and at temperatures reaching 1073 K. We observed significantly enhanced conductivities when the antigorite was heated to temperatures beyond its thermodynamic stability field. Sharp increases in the electrical conductivity occurred at approximately 848 and 898 K following the decomposition of antigorite to forsterite, enstatite and aqueous fluids. High electrical conductivities reaching 1 S/m can be explained by the presence of an interconnected network of conductive aqueous fluids. Based on these results for the electrical conductivity of antigorite, we conclude that high-conductivity regions associated with subduction zones can be attributed to dehydration-induced fluids and the formation of interconnected networks of aqueous fluids during the dehydration of antigorite.

The resistance of the bearing is a significant factor affecting the performance of the ball-disk rotor gyroscope. The micro and nano combined surface with low surface energy material modifications can be hydrophobic. This can reduce the drag when the bearing is lubricated by deionized water. Laser ablation method is utilized to form micron-scaled structures on the surface of the stainless steel rotor ball. And the nanostructures are formed by PEI (Polyetherimide) regulated ZnO nanowires growth. After low surface energy material modification, the water contact angle of processed surface was 163° and the sliding angle was less than 4°. The maximum rotational speed was enhanced by up to 82.77% at 1.5 W driving power. Experiments show that the superhydrophobic drag-reduction spherical bearing has good short-term reliability. At 5 V drive voltage, the bearing can extend the rotational speed of ball-disk rotor gyroscope to 35000 rpm, and maintain the normal operation for longer than 40 minutes. This is quite meaningful for short-term-work or one-time-use rotor gyroscopes.

Appropriate fertilization practice is crucial to achieve maximum wheat grain yield with minimum nitrogen (N) loss. A field 15N micro-plot experiment was conducted to determine the effects of application methods [split application (SA) and band application (BA)] and N rates (60, 150 and 240 kg ha−1) on the wheat grain yield, urea-15N fate and N efficiency in Jiangyan County, China. At high N rates, wheat grain yield was significantly higher for SA than BA treatment, but there was no difference at the lower N rates. Plant N derived from fertilizer was higher in SA than in BA treatment. The high N fertilizer application increased total N uptake by wheat derived from fertilizer, but wheat plant N derived from soil was not affected by the N rate. Fertilizer-N recovery in SA treatment was higher than in BA treatment. Residual N recovery in the 0–80 cm soil layer was 31–51%, which decreased with increasing N rate. The highest N loss was found for BA treatment at the N application of 240 kg ha−1. The one-time BA of N fertilizer, especially for higher N rates, led to reduced wheat grain yield and N efficiency, and increased the N loss.

Strength and ductility are mutually exclusive if they are manifested as consequence of the coupling between strengthening and toughening mechanisms. One notable example is dislocation strengthening in metals, which invariably leads to reduced ductility. However, this trend is averted in metastable austenitic steels. A one-step thermal mechanical treatment (TMT), i.e. hot rolling, can effectively enhance the yielding strength of the metastable austenitic steel from 322 ± 18 MPa to 675 ± 15 MPa, while retaining both the formability and hardenability. It is noted that no boundaries are introduced in the optimized TMT process and all strengthening effect originates from dislocations with inherited thermal stability. The success of this method relies on the decoupled strengthening and toughening mechanisms in metastable austenitic steels, in which yield strength is controlled by initial dislocation density while ductility is retained by the capability to nucleate new dislocations to carry plastic deformation. Especially, the simplicity in processing enables scaling and industrial applications to meet the challenging requirements of emissions reduction. On the other hand, the complexity in the underlying mechanism of dislocation strengthening in this case may shed light on a different route of material strengthening by stimulating dislocation activities, rather than impeding motion of dislocations.

Recently helical nanostructures such as nanosprings and nanocoils have drawn great interests in nanotechnology, due to their unique morphologies and physical properties and they may be potential building blocks in sorts of electromechanical, magnetic, photoelectronic and plasmonic devices at micro/nanoscales. In this report, multi-turns copper nanocoils were synthesized through a modified solvothermal method, in which the mixture of water and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) were selected as reaction medium and copolymer poly(1-vinylpyrrolidone-co-vinyl acetate) (PVP/VA 64E) as reductant. In the liquid solution, nanosprings could be formed from relaxed nanocoils and demonstrated high elasticity. These nanocoils and nanosprings are of single crystalline structure, with the characteristics wire diameters ranging from tens to a few hundreds of nanometers and the ring/coil diameters mostly ~10–35 microns. Their growth and deformation mechanisms were then investigated and discussed along with that of previously reported single-turn copper nanorings. This work could be of importance for researchers working on synthesis and applications of novel 1-D helical nanomaterials and their functional devices.
