Tamarix cones play key roles in preventing sand erosion and maintaining regional ecosystem stability. This study aimed to explore the characteristics of soil grain size distribution (GSD) in Tamarix cones across the Taklimakan Desert, verify the relationships between soil grain composition and the fractal dimension, and analyze the relationships between soil GSD and environmental factors. Soils of the Tamarix cones from 0 to 500 cm soil depth were sampled every 20 cm at four sites (Qiemo, Qira, Aral, and Tazhong) along the periphery to the hinterland of the Taklimakan Desert. A total of 300 soil samples were collected to measure soil grain sizes and soil properties. Soil grain size composition was dominated by silt and very fine sand, and the fraction of fine particles decreased and that of the coarse particles increased with soil depth, except for at Tazhong. This suggested that suspension-size particles are the main component of the soil GSD and decrease with the increasing depth in the profiles at the Tamarix cones. The soils were poorly and moderately poorly sorted. Kurtosis generally showed a mesokurtic peak, and the GSD was negatively skewed towards the coarser particles. The fractal dimensions of GSD decreased in the following order Qiemo (2.30) > Qira (2.07) > Aral (1.99) > Tazhong (1.96) because of the increase of coarse particles. The fractal dimension had a strong positive correlation with the clay and silt fractions, and a strong negative correlation with the sand fraction, indicating that the fractal dimension can reflect the characteristics of the soil GSD. The strong relationships between the fractal dimensions and selected soil properties indicate that the fractal dimension can not only quantify changes in soil properties, but also reflect the degree of desertification and degradation in the desert region. Considering the strong wind activities and different deposition sources in the Taklimakan Desert, this study provides a deep insight into the soil formation processes of Tamarix cones within extreme arid desert ecosystems. A kind of gold-coated glass nano-cone-tips (GGNCTs) is developed as an arrayed optical antenna for highly receiving and converging incident lightwaves. A local light field enhancement factor (LFEF) of ~ 2 × 104 and maximum light absorption of ~ 98% can be achieved. The near-field lightwave measurements at the wavelength of 633 nm show that the surface net charges over a single GGNCT make a typical dipole oscillation and the energy transmits along the wave vector orientation, thus leading to a strong local light field enhancement. An effective detection method by near-field coupling an arrayed GGNCT and complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) sensor for highly efficient imaging detection is proposed. The lightwave detection at several wavelengths, including typical 473 nm, 532 nm, 671 nm, and 980 nm, shows a notable characteristic that a better capability of the net charge distribution adjusting and localized aggregating can be obtained at the absorption peak of the GGNCT developed and a stronger signal detection achieved. The research lays a foundation for further developing a light detector with an ideal optoelectronic sensitivity and broad spectral suitability, which is based on integrating GGNCTs as an arrayed optical antenna with common sensors. Lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) comprises 20–30% of all lung cancers. Immunotherapy has significantly improved the prognosis of LUSC patients; however, only a small subset of patients responds to the treatment. Therefore, we aimed to develop a novel multi-gene signature associated with the immune phenotype of the tumor microenvironment for LUSC prognosis prediction. We stratified the LUSC patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas dataset into hot and cold tumor according to a combination of infiltration status of immune cells and PD-L1 expression level. Kaplan–Meier analysis showed that hot tumors were associated with shorter overall survival (OS). Enrichment analyses of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the hot and cold tumors suggested that hot tumors potentially have a higher immune response ratio to immunotherapy than cold tumors. Subsequently, hub genes based on the DEGs were identified and protein–protein interactions were constructed. Finally, we established an immune-related 13-gene signature based on the hub genes using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator feature selection and multivariate cox regression analysis. This gene signature divided LUSC patients into high-risk and low-risk groups and the former inclined worse OS than the latter. Multivariate cox proportional hazard regression analysis showed that the risk model constructed by the 13 prognostic genes was an independent risk factor for prognosis. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed a moderate predictive accuracy for 1-, 3- and 5-year OS. The 13-gene signature also performed well in four external cohorts (three LUSC and one melanoma cohorts) from Gene Expression Omnibus. Overall, in this study, we established a reliable immune-related 13-gene signature that can stratify and predict the prognosis of LUSC patients, which might serve clinical use of immunotherapy. Although an increasing number of patients benefit from immunotherapy and targeted therapies, melanoma remains incurable with increasing incidence. Drug repositioning and repurposing is an alternative strategy to discover and develop novel anticancer drugs or combined therapeutic regimens. In this study, we demonstrated that albendazole (ABZ), an Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved broad-spectrum antiparasitic agent, significantly inhibits the proliferation of melanoma cells in vitro and in vivo. RNA sequencing and flow cytometry analysis revealed that ABZ arrests melanoma cells at the G2/M phase of the cell cycle and induces cell apoptosis. More importantly, the CDK4/6 inhibitor palbociclib, as a member of the first and only class of highly specific CDK inhibitors approved for cancer treatment to date, showed significant synergistic effects with ABZ treatment in melanoma cells and mouse models. Taken together, we revealed a previously unappreciated function of ABZ in antimelanoma proliferation by inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis and provided a novel combined therapeutic regimen of ABZ plus CDK4/6 inhibitor treatment in melanoma. Limited training, high cost, and low equipment mobility leads to inaccuracies in decision making and is concerning with serious ocular injuries such as suspected ruptured globe or post-operative infections. Here, we present a novel point-of-service (POS) quantitative ascorbic acid (AA) assay with use of the OcuCheck Biosensor. The present work describes the development and clinical testing of the paper-based biosensor that measures the changes in electrical resistance of the enzyme-plated interdigitated electrodes to quantify the level of AA present in ocular fluid. We have demonstrated the proof-of-concept of the biosensor testing 16 clinical samples collected from aqueous humor of patients undergoing therapeutic anterior chamber paracentesis. Comparing with gold standard colorimetric assay for AA concentration, OcuCheck showed accuracy of >80%, sensitivity of >88% and specificity of >71%. At present, there are no FDA-approved POS tests that can directly measures AA concentration levels in ocular fluid. We envisage that the device can be realized as a handheld, battery powered instrument that will have high impact on glaucoma care and point-of-care diagnostics of penetrating ocular globe injuries. Ecological conservation and restoration have increasingly captured attention worldwide due to the degradation of ecosystems. As one of the most ecologically fragile areas, the Tarim River Basin, of Xinjiang, China, encountered serious decline of desert riparian forests. The Chinese government has implemented the "Ecological Water Conveyance Project" (EWCP) since 2000, protecting and restoring the dominant natural species of the desert riparian forests, i.e., Populus euphratica Oliv. The regenerative effect after the water conveyance was noteworthy. For the purpose of clarifying the mechanism of P. euphratica forest regeneration to find a better prescription for the ecological restoration works in the Tarim River Basin, we investigated the relationship between the distribution of P. euphratica and soil salinity. Experimentally evaluated the effects of surface soil salinity on P. euphratica seed germination and the influence of river flooding on the salinity of surface soils. The results showed that (1) P. euphratica trees mainly spread along the river channel within 2 km; with increasing vertical distance to the channel, the number of trees declined significantly; (2) where the salinity of the surface soil is high, there are less living P. euphratica trees; (3) the germination of P. euphratica seeds decreases with increased soil conductivity; when the soil conductivity was higher than 7 ms/cm, the germination of P. euphratica seeds was severely curtailed. (4) Flooding regimes were a pre-condition of P. euphratica restoration; they had profound effects on improving the germination of the seeds via ameliorating water conditions and reducing salinity. Our results point out that the most efficient ecological prescription for restoring and protecting desert riparian forests is to induce flooding twice yearly during June to August with 10- to 15-day durations each time. Previous studies have shown that dysregulation of microRNA-150 (miR-150) is associated with aberrant proliferation of human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. However, whether miR-150 has a critical role in NSCLC cell metastasis is unknown. Here, we reveal that the critical pro-metastatic role of miR-150 in the regulation of epithelial-mesenchymal-transition (EMT) through down-regulation of FOXO4 in NSCLC. In vitro, miR-150 targets 3′UTR region of FOXO4 mRNA, thereby negatively regulating its expression. Clinically, the expression of miR-150 was frequently up-regulated in metastatic NSCLC cell lines and clinical specimens. Contrarily, FOXO4 was frequently down-regulated in NSCLC cell lines and clinical specimens. Functional studies show that ectopic expression of miR-150 enhanced tumor cell metastasis in vitro and in a mouse xenograft model, and triggered EMT-like changes in NSCLC cells (including E-cadherin repression, N-cadherin and Vimentin induction, and mesenchymal morphology). Correspondingly, FOXO4 knockdown exhibited pro-metastatic and molecular effects resembling the effect of miR-150 over-expression. Moreover, NF-κB/snail/YY1/RKIP circuitry regulated by FOXO4 were likely involved in miR-150-induced EMT event. Simultaneous knockdown of miR-150 and FOXO4 abolished the phenotypic and molecular effects caused by individual knockdown of miR-150. Topological insulators (TIs) are a new quantum state of matter. Their surfaces and interfaces act as a topological boundary to generate massless Dirac fermions with spin-helical textures. Investigation of fermion dynamics near the Dirac point (DP) is crucial for the future development of spintronic devices incorporating topological insulators. However, research so far has been unsatisfactory because of a substantial overlap with the bulk valence band and a lack of a completely unoccupied DP. Here, we explore the surface Dirac fermion dynamics in the TI Sb2Te3 by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TrARPES). Sb2Te3 has an in-gap DP located completely above the Fermi energy (EF). The excited electrons in the upper Dirac cone stay longer than those below the DP to form an inverted population.
