Artificial intelligence has been successfully applied in various fields, one of which is computer vision. In this study, a deep neural network (DNN) was adopted for Facial emotion recognition (FER). One of the objectives in this study is to identify the critical facial features on which the DNN model focuses for FER. In particular, we utilized a convolutional neural network (CNN), the combination of squeeze-and-excitation network and the residual neural network, for the task of FER. We utilized AffectNet and the Real-World Affective Faces Database (RAF-DB) as the facial expression databases that provide learning samples for the CNN. The feature maps were extracted from the residual blocks for further analysis. Our analysis shows that the features around the nose and mouth are critical facial landmarks for the neural networks. Cross-database validations were conducted between the databases. The network model trained on AffectNet achieved 77.37% accuracy when validated on the RAF-DB, while the network model pretrained on AffectNet and then transfer learned on the RAF-DB results in validation accuracy of 83.37%. The outcomes of this study would improve the understanding of neural networks and assist with improving computer vision accuracy.

Oxaliplatin (OXA) is the first-line chemotherapy drug for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), and the emergence of drug resistance is a major clinical challenge. Although there have been numerous studies on OXA resistance, but its underlying molecular mechanisms are still unclear. This study aims to identify key regulatory genes and pathways associated with OXA resistance. The Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) GSE42387 dataset containing gene expression profiles of parental and OXA-resistant LoVo cells was applied to explore potential targets. GEO2R, STRING, CytoNCA (a plug-in of Cytoscape), and DAVID were used to analyze differentially expressed genes (DEGs), protein–protein interactions (PPIs), hub genes in PPIs, and gene ontology (GO)/Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis. R2 online platform was used to run a survival analysis of validated hub genes enriched in KEGG pathways. The ENCORI database predicted microRNAs for candidate genes. A survival analysis of those genes was performed, and validated using the OncoLnc database. In addition, the 'clusterProfiler' package in R was used to perform gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA). We identified 395 DEGs, among which 155 were upregulated and 240 were downregulated. In total, 95 DEGs were screened as hub genes after constructing the PPI networks. Twelve GO terms and three KEGG pathways (steroid hormone biosynthesis, malaria, and pathways in cancer) were identified as being significant in the enrichment analysis of hub genes. Twenty-one hub genes enriched in KEGG pathways were defined as key genes. Among them AKT3, phospholipase C Beta 4 (PLCB4), and TGFB1 were identified as OXA-resistance genes through the survival analysis. High expressions of AKT3 and TGFB1 were each associated with a poor prognosis, and lower expression of PLCB4 was correlated with worse survival. Further, high levels of hsa-miR-1271-5p, which potentially targets PLCB4, were associated with poor overall survival in patients with CRC. Finally, we found that PLCB4 low expression was associated with MAPK signaling pathway and VEGF signaling pathway in CRC. Our results demonstrated that hsa-miR-1271-5p/PLCB4 in the pathway in cancer could be a new potential therapeutic target for mCRC with OXA resistance.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common causes of cardiometabolic diseases in overweight individuals. While liver biopsy is the current gold standard to diagnose NAFLD and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive alternative still under clinical trials, the former is invasive and the latter costly. We demonstrate electrical impedance tomography (EIT) as a portable method for detecting fatty infiltrate. We enrolled 19 overweight subjects to undergo liver MRI scans, followed by EIT measurements. The MRI images provided the a priori knowledge of the liver boundary conditions for EIT reconstruction, and the multi-echo MRI data quantified liver proton-density fat fraction (PDFF%) to validate fat infiltrate. Using the EIT electrode belts, we circumferentially injected pairwise current to the upper abdomen, followed by acquiring the resulting surface-voltage to reconstruct the liver conductivity. Pearson’s correlation analyses compared EIT conductivity or MRI PDFF with body mass index, age, waist circumference, height, and weight variables. We reveal that the correlation between liver EIT conductivity or MRI PDFF with demographics is statistically insignificant, whereas liver EIT conductivity is inversely correlated with MRI PDFF (R = −0.69, p = 0.003, n = 16). As a pilot study, EIT conductivity provides a portable method for operator-independent and cost-effective detection of hepatic steatosis.

Neuroendocrine neoplasm (NEN) is a common gastrointestinal (GI) tract tumor divided into the neuroendocrine tumor (NET) and neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) according to mitosis and Ki-67 index. However, the objective discordance between interobserver may cause unsuitable diagnosis and misleading treatment. Nowadays, aberrant glycosylation of glycoconjugates inducing further populations of elongated complex oligosaccharide covalent attached to glycoconjugates anchored in the cell membrane by neo-synthesis of cancer-associated alteration of carbohydrate determinants were observed during cancer development. This study aimed to demonstrate the wax physisorption kinetics coupled with Fourier transform infrared (WPK-FTIR) imaging between NET and NEC in the rectum, colon, and stomach by utilizing two wax reagents (beeswax and paraplast) as glycan adsorbents for physical binding glycans of glycoconjugates based on dipole-induced dipole interaction. Results showed greater physisorption with beeswax than that of paraplast, suggesting highly populated elongated glycans of glycoconjugates adhering onto the tumor surfaces of NETs than that of adjacent benign mucosa in the rectum and colon. Besides, the WPK results of gastric NEN tissue sections showed a higher infrared absorbance ratio of beeswax-remnant to paraplast-remnant remains onto the tissue sections referring to a higher population of elongated glycans in gastric NET as compared with that of gastric NEC. Based on our findings, different anatomical locations could share similar phenomena with minor variance. In conclusion, WPK-FTIR imaging may have the potential to be employed as an alternative diagnostic method in GI NENs in the future.

Acinetobacter baumannii-induced nosocomial pneumonia has become a serious clinical problem because of high antibiotic resistance rates. Antimicrobial peptides (AMP) are an ideal alternative strategy due to their broad-spectrum of antimicrobial activity and low incidence of bacterial resistance. However, their application is limited by toxicity and stability in vivo. The present study used a mouse model to directly identify potential AMPs effective for treatment of A. baumannii-induced pneumonia. Fifty-eight AMPs were screened and two identified (SMAP-29 and TP4) to have prophylactic effects which prevented the death of mice with pneumonia. Furthermore, two TP4 derivatives (dN4 and dC4) were found to have therapeutic activity in pneumonia mouse models by peritoneal or intravenous administration. Both dN4 and dC4 also inhibited and/or eliminated A. baumannii biofilms at higher doses. Taken together, these data suggest the AMP derivatives dN4 and dC4 represent a potential treatment strategy for A. baumannii-induced pneumonia.

Based on incredibly increasing applications in modern optoelectronic devices, the demand for securing a superior conductive transparent electrode (TCE) candidate becomes significant and urgent. However, boosting both transmittance and conductance simultaneously is an intrinsic limitation. In this work, we present silver nanoscale plasmonic wires (Ag NPWs) to function as TCEs in the visible light region by lowering their corresponding plasma frequencies. By carefully designing geometric dimensions of the Ag NPWs, we also optimize the performance for red, green, and blue colors, respectively. The demonstrated figure of merits for RGB colors appeared respectively 443.29, 459.46, and 133.78 in simulation and 302.75, 344.11, and 348.02 in experiments. Evidently, our Ag NPWs offer much greater FoMs beyond conventional TCEs that are most frequently comprised of indium tin oxide and show further advantages of flexibility and less Moire effect for the applications of flexible and high-resolution optoelectronic devices.

The aim of this study was to construct and validate a DNA repair-related gene signature for evaluating the overall survival (OS) of patients with gastric cancer (GC). Differentially expressed DNA repair genes between GC and normal gastric tissue samples obtained from the TCGA database were identified. Univariate Cox analysis was used to screen survival-related genes and multivariate Cox analysis was applied to construct a DNA repair-related gene signature. An integrated bioinformatics approach was performed to evaluate its diagnostic and prognostic value. The prognostic model and the expression levels of signature genes were validated using an independent external validation cohort. Two genes (CHAF1A, RMI1) were identified to establish the prognostic signature and patients ware stratified into high- and low-risk groups. Patients in high-risk group presented significant shorter survival time than patients in the low-risk group in both cohorts, which were verified by the ROC curves. Multivariate analysis showed that the prognostic signature was an independent predictor for patients with GC after adjustment for other known clinical parameters. A nomogram incorporating the signature and known clinical factors yielded better performance and net benefits in calibration plot and decision curve analyses. Further, the logistic regression classifier based on the two genes presented an excellent diagnostic power in differentiating early HCC and normal tissues with AUCs higher than 0.9. Moreover, Gene Set Enrichment Analysis revealed that diverse cancer-related pathways significantly clustered in the high-risk and low-risk groups. Immune cell infiltration analysis revealed that CHAF1A and RMI1 were correlated with several types of immune cell subtypes. A prognostic signature using CHAF1A and RMI1 was developed that effectively predicted different OS rates among patients with GC. This risk model provides new clinical evidence for the diagnostic accuracy and survival prediction of GC.

Avian leukosis caused by avian leukosis virus (ALV) is one of the most severe diseases endangering the poultry industry. When the eradication measures performed in commercial broilers and layers have achieved excellent results, ALV in some local chickens has gradually attracted attention. Since late 2018, following the re-outbreak of ALV-J in white feather broilers in China, AL-like symptoms also suddenly broke out in some local flocks, leading to great economic losses. In this study, a systematic epidemiological survey was carried out in eight local chicken flocks in Jiangxi Province, China, and 71 strains were finally isolated from 560 samples, with the env sequences of them being successfully sequenced. All of those new isolates belong to subgroup J but they have different molecular features and were very different from the strains that emerged in white feature broilers recently, with some strains being highly consistent with those previously isolated from commercial broilers, layers and other flocks or even isolated from USA and Russian, suggesting these local chickens have been acted as reservoirs to accumulate various ALV-J strains for a long time. More seriously, phylogenetic analysis shows that there were also many novel strains emerging and in a separate evolutionary branch, indicating several new mutated ALVs are being bred in local chickens. Besides, ALV-J strains isolated in this study can be further divided into ten groups, while there were more or fewer groups in different chickens, revealing that ALV may cross propagate in those flocks. The above analyses explain the complex background and future evolution trend of ALV-J in Chinese local chickens, providing theoretical support for the establishment of corresponding prevention and control measures.

The serotonin transporter (SLC6A4), 5-HT2A (HTR2A) and 5-HT2B (HTR2B) recepter genes, express proteins that are important regulators of serotonin reuptake and signaling, and thereby may contribute to the pathogenesis of aggressive criminal behavior. 370 sentenced murderers in Pakistani prisons and 359 men without any history of violence or criminal delinquency were genotyped for six candidate polymorphisms in SLC6A4, HTR2A and HTR2B genes. An association of higher expressing L/L and LA/LA variants of the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism was observed with homicidal behavior (bi-allelic: OR = 1.29, p = 0.016, tri-allelic: OR = 1.32, p = 0.015) and in the murderer group only with response to verbal abuse (OR = 2.11, p = 0.015), but not with other measures of self-reported aggression. L/L and LA/LA genotypes of the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism were associated with higher aggression scores on STAX1 scale of aggression compared to lower expressing genotypes (S/S, S/LG, LG/LG) in prison inmates. No associations were apparent for other serotonergic gene polymorphisms analyzed. Using the Braineac and GTEx databases, we demonstrated significant eQTL based functional effects for rs25531 in HTTLPR and other serotonergic polymorphisms analyzed in different brain regions and peripheral tissues. In conclusion, these findings implicate SLC6A4* HTTLPR as a major genetic determinant associated with criminal aggression. Future studies are needed to replicate this finding and establish the biologic intermediate phenotypes mediating this relationship.

Despite significant progress in the fabrication and application of semiconductor materials for optical emitters and sensors, few materials can cover the cyan-gap between 450 and 500 nm. We here introduce a robust and facile method to deposit amorphous Sb2S3 films with a bandgap of 2.8 eV. By exploiting the tunable functionality of graphene, a two-dimensional material, efficient deposition from a chemical was achieved. Ozone-generated defects in the graphene were shown to be required to enhance the morphology and quality of the material and comprehensive characterization of the seed layer and the Sb2S3 film were applied to design an optimal deposition process. The resulting material exhibits efficient carrier transport and high photodetector performance as evidenced by unprecedented responsivity and detectivity in semiconductor/graphene/glass vertical heterostructures. Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) of the limbs caused by Aeromonas species is an extremely rare and life-threatening skin and soft tissue infection. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the specific characteristics and the independent predictors of mortality in patients with Aeromonas NF. Sixty-eight patients were retrospectively reviewed over an 18-year period. Differences in mortality, demographics data, comorbidities, symptoms and signs, laboratory findings, microbiological analysis, empiric antibiotics treatment and clinical outcomes were compared between the non-survival and the survival groups. Twenty patients died with the mortality rate of 29.4%. The non-survival group revealed significant differences in bacteremia, monomicrobial infection, cephalosporins resistance, initial ineffective empiric antibiotics usage, chronic kidney disease, chronic hepatic dysfunction, tachypnea, shock, hemorrhagic bullae, skin necrosis, leukopenia, band polymorphonuclear neutrophils >10%, anemia, and thrombocytopenia. The multivariate analysis identified four variables predicting mortality: bloodstream infection, shock, skin necrosis, and initial ineffective empirical antimicrobial usage against Aeromonas. NF caused by Aeromonas spp. revealed high mortality rates, even through aggressive surgical debridement and antibacterial therapies. Identifying those independent predictors, such as bacteremia, shock, progressive skin necrosis, monomicrobial infection, and application of the effective antimicrobial agents against Aeromonas under the supervision of infectious doctors, may improve clinical outcomes.

Constrained by the diffraction limit, a lens can only resolve features larger than half of the incident wavelength owing to the decaying nature of evanescent waves. Several novel devices have been proposed, for example, superlenses and hyperlenses to break this limit. In this work, we present a flat hyperlens composed of silver nanowires embedded in a modified anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template to demonstrate subwavelength imaging. Measurement conducted by the near-field scanning optical microscope at 633 nm suggests that our proposed flat hyperlens can indeed achieve sub-wavelength imaging with a resolution down to 0.34λ and 0.25λ along two orthogonal directions. Furthermore, to confirm the resolution limit of the flat hyperlens, numerical simulations were performed at the incident wavelengths of 633 and 365 nm, and the corresponding resolution were 0.19λ and 0.3λ, respectively, thus paving a route for sub-wavelength photolithography.

Hypoxemic respiratory failure is usually accompanied with a certain extent of consolidation and alveolar derecruitment, which may still be present even after the patients have achieved the status of readiness to extubate. Functional residual capacity (FRC) is an indicator of lung aeration. This study aimed to evaluate whether pre-extubation FRC is associated with the risk of extubation failure in patients with hypoxemic respiratory failure. We prospectively included 92 patients intubated for hypoxemic respiratory failure. We used a technique based on a nitrogen multiple breath washout method to measure FRC before the planned extubation. The median FRC before extubation was 25 mL/kg (Interquartile range, 20–32 mL/Kg) per predicted body weight (pBW). After extubation, 20 patients (21.7%) were reintubated within 48 hours. Low power microwave can effectively deactivate influenza type A virus through the nonthermal structure-resonant energy transfer effect, at a frequency matching the confined-acoustic dipolar mode frequency of the virus. Currently, aerosol is considered the major route for SARS-CoV-2 transmission. For the potential microwave-based sterilization, the microwave-resonant frequency of SARS-CoV-2 must be unraveled. Here we report a microwave absorption spectroscopy study of the SARS-CoV-2 and HCoV-229E viruses through devising a coplanar-waveguide-based sensor. Noticeable microwave absorption can be observed, while we identified the resonant frequencies of the 1st and 2nd dipolar modes of SARS-CoV-2 virus as 4 and 7.5 GHz respectively. We further found that the resonant frequencies are invariant to the virus titer, and we also studied the microwave absorption of HCoV-229E in weak acidity medium to simulate the common pH value in fluid secretion. Our results suggest the possible radiation frequency for the recently proposed microwave sterilization devices to inactivate SARS-CoV-2 virus through a nonthermal mechanism so as to control the disease transmission in the post-pandemic era.

This study aimed to retrospectively analyse the effect of the baseline luteinising hormone/follicle-stimulating hormone ratio (bLH/FSH) on the live-birth rate per fresh-embryo transfer cycle (LBR/ET) in infertile women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) who received a fresh-embryo transfer. A total of 424 patients with PCOS who underwent the first cycle of in vitro fertilisation (IVF)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) fresh-embryo transfer at our hospital was enrolled. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses, along with curve fitting and a threshold effect analysis, were performed. Baseline LH/FSH levels were a significant (P 1.0 carefully consider fresh-embryo transfer during their first IVF/ICSI.

Better sensitivity of a biosensor could boost up the detection limit of analytes, thus a must in the fields of bio-sensing and bio-detection. To further enhance the sensitivity of a biosensor, in this work, we design an oblique-flat-sheet metamaterial perfect absorber (MPA) to concentrate the hot spots within air between the oblique flat sheet and the continuous ground metal, thus enabling fully interaction between analytes and hot spots. The corresponding field distributions in simulation corroborated our assumption and its sensitivity could be up to 1049 nm/RIU. Then, we fabricated the sample by e-beam lithography process for a seed layer and simply tilting the sample during deposition to obtain oblique flat sheets. When considering the stochastic nature of the deposited multiple oblique flat sheets, we modified the metallic upper resonator of the MPA from the single oblique-flat-sheet into randomly distributed oblique-wire-bundle (OWB) and in simulation, its sensitivity is boosted up to 3319 nm/RIU. In experiments, the measured sensitivity is 1329 nm/RIU under different concentrations of glucose solutions that is four times larger than the 330 nm/RIU of the planar MPA. The higher sensitivity was attributed to that the OWB MPA could provide hot spots within air not only between OWB and grounded metal but also among wires. Moreover, the OWB could also trap and concentrate the analytes locally.

Extensive loss of natural wetlands caused by changes in land use largely diminishes the food resources essential for the survival of migratory waterbirds. Globally, the decline in waterbird populations in East Asia is the most serious, with 64% of these populations showing a decreasing trend. In this study, we applied DNA metabarcoding to examine the spatiotemporal variations and diversities in the dietary compositions of migratory waterbirds in a natural/artificial wetland complex in Asia. By investigating 110 fecal samples from the endangered black-faced spoonbill (Platalea minor) wintering in the wetland, our results show that P. minor had a broad dietary spectrum. The birds fed on at least 26 species in the classes Actinopterygii and Malacostraca, with Mugiliformes, Cichliformes, and Gobiiformes being the main taxa in their diets. Our results also demonstrated clear patterns of the spatiotemporal variations between the roosting groups and intraspecific variations between the individuals, which potentially reflect some of their feeding habits, and the probable usage of different habitat types in the wetland complex. Using high-throughput sequencing, we were able to elucidate the food resources that are critical to P. minor non-invasively, this method can also be used to provide invaluable information for the conservation of many other waterbird species.

Symptoms have been used to diagnose conditions such as frailty and mental illnesses. However, the diagnostic accuracy of the numbers of symptoms has not been well studied. This study aims to use equations and simulations to demonstrate how the factors that determine symptom incidence influence symptoms’ diagnostic accuracy for disease diagnosis. Assuming a disease causing symptoms and correlated with the other disease in 10,000 simulated subjects, 40 symptoms occurred based on 3 epidemiological measures: proportions diseased, baseline symptom incidence (among those not diseased), and risk ratios. Symptoms occurred with similar correlation coefficients. The sensitivities and specificities of single symptoms for disease diagnosis were exhibited as equations using the three epidemiological measures and approximated using linear regression in simulated populations. The areas under curves (AUCs) of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves was the measure to determine the diagnostic accuracy of multiple symptoms, derived by using 2 to 40 symptoms for disease diagnosis. With respect to each AUC, the best set of sensitivity and specificity, whose difference with 1 in the absolute value was maximal, was chosen. The results showed sensitivities and specificities of single symptoms for disease diagnosis were fully explained with the three epidemiological measures in simulated subjects. The AUCs increased or decreased with more symptoms used for disease diagnosis, when the risk ratios were greater or less than 1, respectively. Based on the AUCs, with risk ratios were similar to 1, symptoms did not provide diagnostic values. When risk ratios were greater or less than 1, maximal or minimal AUCs usually could be reached with less than 30 symptoms. The maximal AUCs and their best sets of sensitivities and specificities could be well approximated with the three epidemiological and interaction terms, adjusted R-squared ≥ 0.69. However, the observed overall symptom correlations, overall symptom incidence, and numbers of symptoms explained a small fraction of the AUC variances, adjusted R-squared ≤ 0.03. In conclusion, the sensitivities and specificities of single symptoms for disease diagnosis can be explained fully by the at-risk incidence and the 1 minus baseline incidence, respectively. The epidemiological measures and baseline symptom correlations can explain large fractions of the variances of the maximal AUCs and the best sets of sensitivities and specificities. These findings are important for researchers who want to assess the diagnostic accuracy of composite diagnostic criteria.

Diverse magnetic and electronic properties of halogen-adsorbed silicene are investigated by the first-principle theoretical framework, including the adatom-diversified geometric structures, atom-dominated energy bands, spatial spin density distributions, spatial charge density distributions and its variations, and orbital-projected density of states. Also, such physical quantities are sufficient to identify similar and different features in the double-side and single-side adsorptions. The former belongs to the concentration-depended finite gap semiconductors or p-type metals, while the latter display the valence energy bands with/without spin-splitting intersecting with the Fermi level. Both adsorption types show the halogen-related weakly dispersed bands at deep energies, the adatom-modified middle-energy σ bands, and the recovery of low-energy π bands during the decrease of the halogen concentrations. Such feature-rich band structures can be verified by the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiment.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a disorder characterized by hyperandrogenism, oligo- or anovulation, and/or polycystic ovary. It frequently presents with dyslipidemia and insulin resistance. Recent studies have shown that the white adipose tissue-derived asprosin is elevated in humans with insulin resistance. Because many PCOS patients have a propensity to develop dyslipidemia and/or insulin resistance, asprosin metabolism could be dysregulated in PCOS patients. Accordingly, we investigated serum levels of asprosin, irisin, GIP, androgens, LH, glucose, insulin, and lipids as well as HOMA-IR, QUICKI and ISI Matsuda in a cohort of 444 PCOS patients and 156 controls. Patients were stratified based on metabolic syndrome risk factors (ATPIII [+] and [−] groups), or BMI (overweight and lean groups). The irisin level was significantly correlated with body weight, SBP, DBP, Ferriman–Gallwey score, and levels of TSH, triglycerides, glucose and insulin in the overall population, and was elevated in ATPIII(+) and overweight PCOS patients compared to corresponding controls. By contrast, asprosin levels in PCOS, ATPIII(+), or overweight patients were similar to those of corresponding controls. This finding indicated that the regulation of irisin, but not asprosin, metabolism is abnormal in PCOS patients, and this metabolic characteristic is distinctly different from that of diabetes patients.

We design an all-dielectric taper and then excite its surface modes by illuminating a plane wave upon the taper to achieve broadband light trapping spanning from 20 to 100 GHz. Via Lewin’s theory, such excitation of surface modes could be analogous to “trapped rainbow”, i.e., activation of negative Goos-Hänchen effect within a negative refractive waveguide. To further reinforce this statement, the corresponding power flow distributions within the all-dielectric taper are recorded in finite-integration time domain simulation and suggest that a chromatic incident pulse is indeed trapped at different critical thicknesses of the taper, a character of the negative refractive waveguide. Finally, the transmittance is measured and compared to the simulated ones. The two followed the similar trend.

The challenge of decoding information about complex diseases hidden in huge number of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotypes is undertaken based on five dbGaP studies. Current genome-wide association studies have successfully identified many high-risk SNPs associated with diseases, but precise diagnostic models for complex diseases by these or more other SNP genotypes are still unavailable in the literature. We report that lung cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer as the first three top cancers worldwide can be predicted precisely via 240–370 SNPs with accuracy up to 99% according to leave-one-out and 10-fold cross-validation. Our findings (1) confirm an early guess of Dr. Mitchell H. Gail that about 300 SNPs are needed to improve risk forecasts for breast cancer, (2) reveal an incredible fact that SNP genotypes may contain almost all information that one wants to know, and (3) show a hopeful possibility that complex diseases can be precisely diagnosed by means of SNP genotypes without using phenotypical features. In short words, information hidden in SNP genotypes can be extracted in efficient ways to make precise diagnoses for complex diseases.

The aim of the study was to investigate the associations between symptoms of autism and emotional and behavioral problems in children with autism spectrum disorder from both caregivers’ and clinicians’ perspectives. Three main findings were found in our study. First, the association patterns were similar in the preschool and school-aged children. Second, different association patterns were found from caregivers’ and professionals’ perspectives. From the professionals’ perspective, only repetitive behaviors were associated with behavioral problems, while from the caregivers’ perspective, all symptoms of autism were associated with emotional and behavioral problems. Third, different types of symptoms of autism were associated with different types of emotional and behavioral problems. For example, from the professionals’ perspective, restricted and repetitive behaviors were only associated with hyperactivity and inattention. From the caregivers’ perspective, social emotion was associated with emotional symptoms, and other symptoms of autism were associated with hyperactivity and inattention, as well as with peer problems. The results of our study provided deeper understanding of the relationships between symptoms of autism and emotional and behavioral problems, and the findings could serve as a reference for intervention planning when clinicians approach children with autism spectrum disorder.

This study was designed to evaluate the learning curve of applying Seprafilm (modified hyaluronic acid and carboxymethylcellulose; Genzyme, Cambridge, MA, USA) during laparoscopic hysterectomy or subtotal hysterectomy with or without adnexectomy. In this retrospective cohort study, 35 patients who underwent laparoscopic hysterectomy or subtotal hysterectomy with or without adnexectomy were enrolled. The Seprafilm was cut into 4 pieces, rolled up with a trimmed plastic sleeve and delivered through an incision wound made for the 5-mm ancillary trocar. The membrane was unrolled and placed on the rough surface after hysterectomy or subtotal hysterectomy with or without adnexectomy. The time from the insertion of the first piece of membrane into the abdominal cavity to the complete removal of the trimmed plastic sleeve was recorded. The median time for Seprafilm placement was 3 min. The learning curve was analyzed using the power-law method and suggested that 10 cases were required to achieve proficiency in the procedure. The diverse structural and electronic properties of the Si-adsorbed and -substituted monolayer graphene systems are studied by a complete theoretical framework under the first-principles calculations, including the adatom-diversified geometric structures, the Si- and C-dominated energy bands, the spatial charge densities, variations in the spatial charge densities and the atom- and orbital-projected density of states (DOSs). These critical physical quantities are unified together to display a distinct physical and chemical picture in the studying systems. Under the Si-adsorption and Si-substitution effects, the planar geometric structures are still remained mainly owing to the very strong C–C and Si–C bonds on the honeycomb lattices, respectively. The Si-adsorption cases can create free carriers, while the finite- or zero-gap semiconducting behaviors are revealed in various Si-substitution configurations. The developed theoretical framework can be fully generalized to other emergent layered materials. The Si-doped graphene systems might be a highly promising anode material in the lithium-ion battery owing to its rich potential properties.

China has experienced severe hazes with high concentrations of particulate matter in recent years. The understanding of the size spectrum evolution of submicron particulate matter is critical to making efficient remediation policies to minimize the regional and global environmental impacts from hazes. During a time period of about one month, we monitored five severe haze episodes in Xi’an and four severe haze episodes in Beijing, which were characterized by two distinct kinds of aerosol mass concentration growth processes: accumulative-rise and abrupt-rise. A new method was developed to quantitatively evaluate the physical and chemical contributions to growth processes by analysing the size spectrum evolution data. The results showed that the accumulative-rise processes are governed by primary emissions and the abrupt-rise processes are governed by secondary chemical reactions. The population balance equations (PBE) were used to describe the variation of size spectrum of fine particulate matter, and the respective contributions of the physical aggregation rate and the chemical growth rate. The PBE model is solved using the adjustable direct quadrature method of moments (ADQMOM) to simulate the abrupt-rise process of haze development and to calibrate the contribution of the physical and chemical effects on the size spectrum of aerosol particles.

The real-world efficacy of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) harboring EGFR-activating mutations remains unclear. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data from the claims database of Taipei Veterans General Hospital to perform direct comparisons of these three EGFR-TKIs (gefitinib, erlotinib, and afatinib) combined with co-medications (metformin, statins, antacids, and steroids). Stage IIIB and IV NSCLC patients with EGFR mutations receiving EGFR-TKIs as first-line treatment for > 3 months between 2011 and 2016 were enrolled. The primary endpoint was time to treatment failure (TTF). Patients who had received co-medications (≥ 28 defined daily doses) in the first 3 months of EGFR-TKI therapy were assigned to co-medications groups. A total of 853 patients treated with gefitinib (n = 534), erlotinib (n = 220), and afatinib (n = 99) were enrolled. Motor learning is essential to maintain accurate behavioral responses. We used a larval zebrafish model to study ocular motor learning behaviors. During a sustained period of optokinetic stimulation in 5-day-old wild-type zebrafish larvae the slow-phase eye velocity decreased over time. Then interestingly, a long-lasting and robust negative optokinetic afternystagmus (OKAN) was evoked upon light extinction. The slow-phase velocity, the quick-phase frequency, and the decay time constant of the negative OKAN were dependent on the stimulus duration and the adaptation to the preceding optokinetic stimulation. Based on these results, we propose a sensory adaptation process during continued optokinetic stimulation, which, when the stimulus is removed, leads to a negative OKAN as the result of a changed retinal slip velocity set point, and thus, a sensorimotor memory. The pronounced negative OKAN in larval zebrafish not only provides a practical solution to the hitherto unsolved problems of observing negative OKAN, but also, and most importantly, can be readily applied as a powerful model for studying sensorimotor learning and memory in vertebrates., Scientific Reports, 9 (1), ISSN:2045-2322

The levels of the four deoxynucleoside triphosphates (dNTPs) are under strict control in the cell, as improper or imbalanced dNTP pools may lead to growth defects and oncogenesis. Upon treatment of cancer cells with therapeutic agents, changes in the canonical dNTPs levels may provide critical information for evaluating drug response and mode of action. The radioisotope-labeling enzymatic assay has been commonly used for quantitation of cellular dNTP levels. However, the disadvantage of this method is the handling of biohazard materials. Here, we described the use of click chemistry to replace radioisotope-labeling in template-dependent DNA polymerization for quantitation of the four canonical dNTPs. Specific oligomers were designed for dCTP, dTTP, dATP and dGTP measurement, and the incorporation of 5-ethynyl-dUTP or C8-alkyne-dCTP during the polymerization reaction allowed for fluorophore conjugation on immobilized oligonucleotides. The four reactions gave a linear correlation coefficient >0.99 in the range of the concentration of dNTPs present in 106 cells, with little interference of cellular rNTPs. We present evidence indicating that data generated by this methodology is comparable to radioisotope-labeling data. Plasma volume, estimated by several indirect methods, has been viewed as a biological surrogate for intravascular fluid status. The clinical implication of estimated plasma volume status (ePVS) for long term outcomes in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) remains unclear. We investigate the prognostic value of ePVS calculated by Strauss formula and its association with cardiovascular events and mortality in a prospective HFpEF cohort. There were 449 individuals met the inclusion criteria of our cohort. Estimated plasma volume variation (ΔePVS) and its instantaneous derivatives were calculated by the Strauss formula. Our study endpoints were events of heart failure hospitalization and mortality. Kaplan–Meier estimates and Cox regression analysis were applied to determine the power of ΔePVS and baseline ePVS in predicting long term cardiovascular outcomes. Both baseline ePVS and ΔePVS were independent predictors of heart failure hospitalization and mortality. Kaplan-Meier estimates of these outcomes stratified by optimal cut-off value showed that HFpEF individuals with higher baseline ePVS and ΔePVS were associated with elevated risk of composite endpoint of heart failure hospitalization and mortality. This study demonstrated the prognostic value of a novel biological surrogate, instantaneous derivatives ePVS, in predicting long term cardiovascular outcomes in HFpEF population. Monitoring instantaneous plasma volume may assist in identifying patients at high risk for future cardiovascular events. Further prospective studies validating the role of ePVS in predicting long-term prognosis in patients with HFpEF are warranted.

In this study, we investigate the proximity effect in topological insulator (TI) and magnetic insulator bilayer system. (Bi1−xSbx)2Se3/CoFe2O4 (CFO) heterostructure was fabricated using molecular beam epitaxy and pulsed laser deposition system respectively. As revealed from the magnetoresistance measurement, the weak anti-localization (WAL) is strongly suppressed by proximity effect in (Bi1−xSbx)2Se3/CFO interface. Modified Hikama-Larkin-Nagaoka equation was used to fit the WAL results so that the size of surface state gap can be extracted successfully. The temperature-dependent resistance of the heterostructures at small and large perpendicular magnetic fields were also measured and analyzed. The results indicate that the surface band gap can be induced in TI and continuously enlarged up to 9 T, indicating the gradual alignment of the magnetic moment in CFO under perpendicular magnetic field. The approaches and results accommodated in this work show that CFO can effectively magnetize (Bi1−xSbx)2Se3 and the heterostructures are promising for TI-based spintronic device applications.

The hepatitis B X protein (HBx) plays a role in the epigenetic regulation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication. This study investigated the effects of HBx mutations on HBV transcription and the recruitment of HBx, histone acetyl-transferase P300 and histone deacetylase 1 (HDAC1) to circularized HBV DNA (which resembles covalently closed circular DNA [cccDNA]). Compared with wild type, majority of mutants had lower levels of intracellular HBV RNA (44–77% reduction) and secretory HBsAg (25–81% reduction), and 12 mutants had a reduction in intracellular encapsidated HBV DNA (33–64% reduction). Eight mutants with >70% reduction in HBV RNA and/or HBsAg were selected for chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis. Four HBx mutants with mutations in amino acid residues 55–60 and 121–126 had a lower degree of HBx-cccDNA association than wild type HBx (mean % input: 0.02–0.64% vs. 3.08% in wild type). A reduced association between cccDNA and P300 (mean % input: 0.69–1.81% vs. 3.48% in wild type) and an augmented association with HDAC1 (mean % input: 4.01–14.0% vs. 1.53% in wild type) were detected. HBx amino acid residues 55–60 and 121–126 may play an important role in HBV transcription regulation, via their impeded interaction with cccDNA and altered recruitment of histone modifying enzymes to cccDNA.
