Blood and bone marrow abnormalities accompanying cancers have been known for a while, without yet being understood. The study of 89 patients having lung cancers leads to the following observations: thrombocytosis is frequent and should be considered as a diagnostic criterion; anemia is often associated and we have noticed a correlation between the two. The bone marrow abnormalities shown on biopsy are also frequent, presenting mainly (54/104) as irritative type. This histological pattern becomes a criterion of prognosis, since one should interpret it as a bone marrow reaction to the implantation of cancerous cells. Lastly, no relationship has been found between the blood count and the bone marrow pattern.

A case of undifferenciated carcinoma of the left lung with stenosis of the right pulmonary artery is reported. The characteristic clinical features of the systolic ejection murmur in pulmonary artery stenosis are recalled as well as the data from phonocardiographic, angiographic, and hemodynamic investigations. After radiation therapy, the grade of the systolic murmur decreased frankly although transiently. Noticeable decrease of the stenosis was substantiated by a second angiography. This improvement was still apparent 16 months later during chemotherapy.

The autors reports about a new case of Schwartz-Bartter's syndrome. Its first clinical manifestations are primarily the neuro-psychiatric disorder and the arterial hypertension. These manifestations were attributed to an inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormon, in relation with a bronchial neoplasm (oat-cell carcinoma). The tumor was removed surgically; shortly after the operation the biological disorders disappeared completely. But they reappeared 5 months later, indicating recurrence (local and metastatic). This recurrence started to present clinical manifestation, 2 months later. After a brief historical approach, the authors suggested the aetiology, the diagnosis circumstances and the biological criteria of Schwartz-Bartter's syndrome. Then later, the precised the main principles of its management.

The authors report two cases of periarteritis nodosa associated with carcinoma. The first case was a man with an anaplastic bronchial carcinoma, the second was a woman with a rectal adenocarcinoma. Study of the association of certain collagen diseases with carcinoma was made to emphasize the great rareness of this association.

This paper is relating the study of 164 patients with primary and proved bronchial carcinoma. A thrombocytosis superior to 400,000/mm3 was observed in 36.6 p. cent of cases. But no statistic relation was found between the histological type of tumor, a biological inflammatory state, the existence of metastasis and thrombocytosis. However thrombocytosis was more frequently observed among anaemic and hyposideremic patients. No significantly changes of paO2 and paCO2 were noted in patients with thrombocytosis. The systematic platelet count could be of an interest in the interpretation of some thoracic radiography.

In a fifty-three-year-old man, constrictive metastatic carcinoma of the pericardium revealed a bronchial carcinoma. The subacute course was rapidly progressive. Only partial pericardiectomy could be performed. Death occurred 16 days after the peripheral signs of compression of the heart became patent. In such cases early diagnosis, before signs of constrictive pericarditis become obvious, is very important.

Paraneoplastic hypercalcemia is frequently observed in squamous cell carcinoma of the bronchus. Clinically, apart from the general symptoms which are always very marked, neurological signs are the most common. This hypercalcemia, accompanied by hypophosphatemia, is of sudden onset and immediately very high. Metabolic alkalosis, with hypokalemia and hypochloremia, differentiates it from true hyperparathyroidism. Symptomatic treatment is only transiently effective. However, the obvious effect of mitramycin may be useful before surgical operation, which alone produces a lasting normalisation of serum calcium. Inappropriate secretion of a parathormone substance by the tumour may be demonstrated by radio-immunoassay, and this explains a large number of cases of hypercalcemia but this does not exclude other possible factors in the etiology. Finally, hypercalcemia originally attributed to bony lysis, may be explained in some cases by a paraneoplastic process.

Two cases of inappropriate antidiuresis are reported, one associated with small cell anaplastic bronchial carcinoma, the other secondary to acute hydrocephalus. ttreatment with demethylchlortetracycline proved effective in both cases. Treatment of the inappropriate antidiuretic syndrome is discussed and the advantages of demethylchlortetracycline emphasised. This antibiotic seems to represent the treatment of choice of the chronic syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis.

The authors review 26 cases of multiple endocrine tumours with presence of a carcinoid tumour. In 44% the carcinoid was localised to the bronchus, in 20% of cases to the small intestine or duodenum. In 76% of cases during multiple endocrine tumours, the carcinoid appeared in embryological derivatives of the anterior part of the intestine. No carcinoid syndrome was reported. The difficulty of histological distinction has led to the description of carcinoid islet cell tumours. These facts fit in with the APUD concept.
