The stress status of a soil pressure cell placed in soil is very different from its stress state in a uniform fluid medium. The use of the calibration coefficient provided by the soil pressure cell manufacturer will produce a large error. In order to improve the measurement accuracy of the interface-type earth pressure cell placed in soil, this paper focuses on a single-membrane resistive earth pressure cell installed on the surface of a structure, analyzing the influence of loading and unloading cycles, the thickness and particle size of the sand filling, and the depth of the earth pressure cell inserted in the structure on the calibration curve and matching error, which were analyzed through calibration tests. The results show that when the sand filling thickness is less than D (D is the diameter of the earth pressure cell), the calibration curve is unstable in relation to the increase in the number of loading and unloading cycles, which will cause the sand calibration coefficient used for stress conversion to not be used normally. When the sand filling thickness in the calibration bucket increases from 0.285D to 5D, the absolute value of the matching error first decreases and then increases, such that the optimal sand filling thickness is 3D. The output of the earth pressure cell increases with the decrease in sand particle size under the same load, and there is a significant difference between the theoretical calculation value and the experimental value of the matching error; aiming at this difference, an empirical formula is derived to reflect the ratio of the diameter of the induction diaphragm of the earth pressure cell to the maximum particle size of the sand filling. When the depth of the earth pressure cell inserted in the structure is “0”, the sensing surface is flush with the structure and the absolute value of the matching error is the smallest. Changes in the horizontal placement of the soil pressure cell in the calibration bucket result in significant differences in both the output and hysteresis of the calibration curve. To improve the measurement accuracy of soil pressure cells in scaled tests for applications such as in the retaining walls of excavation pits, tunnel outer surfaces, pile tops, pile ends, and soil pressure measurements in soil, calibration of the soil pressure cells is required before testing. Due to the considerable difference in the stress states of the soil pressure cell between granular media and uniform fluid media, calibration in soil is essential. During in-soil calibration, factors such as cyclic loading and unloading, soil compression, sand thickness and particle size, and the placement of the soil pressure cell all affect the calibration results. This paper primarily investigates the influence of these factors on the calibration curve and matching error. This study found that, as the sand thickness increases, the matching error decreases initially and then increases.

This paper proposes an embedded Internet of Things (IoT) system for bioreactor sensor integration, aimed at optimizing temperature and turbidity control during cell cultivation. Utilizing an ESP32 development board, the system makes advances on previous iterations by incorporating superior analog-to-digital conversion capabilities, dual-core processing, and integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. The key components include a DS18B20 digital temperature sensor, a TS-300B turbidity sensor, and a Peltier module for temperature regulation. Through real-time monitoring and data transmission to cloud platforms, the system facilitates advanced process control and optimization. The experimental results on yeast cultures demonstrate the system’s effectiveness at maintaining optimal growth, highlighting its potential to enhance bioprocessing techniques. The proposed solution underscores the practical applications of the IoT in bioreactor environments, offering insights into the improved efficiency and reliability of culture cultivation processes.

Conventionally, the electromechanical system requires the installation of auxiliary displacement sensors and only the amount on the drive part and motion end, which increases volume, cost, and measurement error in the system. This paper presents an integrated measurement method with a sensing head, which takes the equal division characteristics of mechanical structures as part of the sensor, thus, the so-called self-sensing system. Moreover, the displacement is measured by counting the time pulses. The sensing head is integrated with the entire electromechanical system, including the driving, transmitting, and moving parts. Thus, the integration of the sensing part is greatly improved. Taking the rotary table as a special example, and the sensing head embedded into each part of the system, displacement information is obtained by the common processing system and fused by the adaptive weighted average method. The results of the experiment show that the fusion precision of each component is higher than only the motor position information as the feedback. The proposed method is a practical self-sensing technology with significant volume reduction and intelligent control benefits in the industry, especially suitable for extremely small and narrow spaces.

Critical systems such as drone control or power grid control applications rely on embedded devices capable of a real-time response. While much research and advancements have been made to implement low-latency and real-time characteristics, the security aspect has been left aside. All current real-time operating systems available for industrial embedded devices are implemented in the C programming language, which makes them prone to memory safety issues. As a response to this, Tock, an innovative secure operating system for embedded devices written completely in Rust, has recently appeared. The only downside of Tock is that it lacks the low-latency real-time component. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to leverage the extended Berkeley Packet Filter technology used for efficient network traffic processing and to add the low-latency capability to Tock. The result is a secure low-latency operating system for embedded devices and microcontrollers capable of handling interrupts at latencies as low as 60 µs.

Distributed Embedded Systems (DESs) carrying out critical tasks must be highly reliable and hard in real-time. Moreover, to operate in dynamic operational contexts in an effective and efficient manner, they must also be adaptive. Adaptivity is particularly interesting from a dependability perspective, as it can be used to develop dynamic fault tolerance mechanisms, which, in combination with static ones, make it possible to provide better and more efficient fault tolerance. However, constructing a DES with such complexity presents many challenges. This is because all the mechanisms that support fault tolerance, real-time, and adaptivity must be designed to operate in a coordinated manner. This paper presents the Dynamic Fault Tolerance for Flexible Time-Triggered Ethernet (DFT4FTT), a self-reconfigurable infrastructure for implementing highly reliable adaptive DES. Here, we describe the design of its hardware and software architecture and the main set of mechanisms, with a focus on fault tolerance.

The objective of this article is to present the results of our investigations concerning the environmental conditions that can be expected during the embedding process into fibre metal laminates and the consequences for a sensor node for structural health monitoring. The idea behind this investigation is to determine for which manufacturing conditions the integration of sensor nodes into the material can be done and to identify limits for this. The sensor nodes consist of commercially available integrated circuits and passive components soldered onto an adhesive-less flexible printed circuit board. They are tested under conditions above their specified limits, to find out if they are still working reliably after experiencing 155 min of 180 ∘C and 7 bar of pressure. Apart from occurring temperature damage, the effect of surrounding fibres potentially pushing away the components under the amount of pressure of the manufacturing process, as well as the potential of shorts due to conductive fibers are investigated and suitable solutions to prevent this are evaluated. One experiment exceeding the typical requirements of a fiber metal laminate embedding process for structural components will be conducted at 250 ∘C for 10 h, in order to determine the limits of embedding electronic sensor nodes. This time and temperature combination is expected to cause irreversible damage to the electronic system. Results show that it is possible to integrate electronics into materials under conditions far above their specifications when precautions are taken but also that there are limits that must not be exceeded during the embedding process.

Currently, the target detection based on convolutional neural network plays an important role in image recognition, speech recognition and other fields. However, the current network model features a complex structure, a huge number of parameters and resources. These conditions make it difficult to apply in embedded devices with limited computational capabilities and extreme sensitivity to power consumption. In this regard, the application scenarios of deep learning are limited. This paper proposes a real-time detection scheme for cook assistant overalls based on the Hi3559A embedded processor. With YOLOv3 as the benchmark network, this scheme fully mobilizes the hardware acceleration resources through the network model optimization and the parallel processing technology of the processor, and improves the network reasoning speed, so that the embedded device can complete the task of real-time detection on the local device. The experimental results show that through the purposeful cropping, segmentation and in-depth optimization of the neural network according to the specific processor, the neural network can recognize the image accurately. In an application environment where the power consumption is only 5.5 W, the recognition speed of the neural network on the embedded end is increased to about 28 frames (the design requirement was to achieve a recognition speed of 25 frames or more), so that the optimized network can be effectively applied in the back kitchen overalls identification scene.

An RFID-based wireless system to measure the evolution of the setting process of cement-based materials is presented in this paper. The system consists of a wireless RFID temperature sensor that works embedded in concrete, and an external RFID reader that communicates with the embedded sensor to extract the temperature measurement conducted by the embedded sensor. Temperature time evolution is a well known proxy to monitor the setting process of concrete. The RFID sensor consisting of an UWB Bow Tie antenna with central frequency 868 MHz, matched to the EM4325 temperature chip through a T-match structure for embedded operation inside concrete is fully characterized. Results for measurements of the full set up conducted in a real-scenario are provided.

Robust and accurate pose estimation is crucial for many applications in mobile robotics. Extending visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) with other modalities such as an inertial measurement unit (IMU) can boost robustness and accuracy. However, for a tight sensor fusion, accurate time synchronization of the sensors is often crucial. Changing exposure times, internal sensor filtering, multiple clock sources and unpredictable delays from operation system scheduling and data transfer can make sensor synchronization challenging. In this paper, we present VersaVIS, an Open Versatile Multi-Camera Visual-Inertial Sensor Suite aimed to be an efficient research platform for easy deployment, integration and extension for many mobile robotic applications. VersaVIS provides a complete, open-source hardware, firmware and software bundle to perform time synchronization of multiple cameras with an IMU featuring exposure compensation, host clock translation and independent and stereo camera triggering. The sensor suite supports a wide range of cameras and IMUs to match the requirements of the application. The synchronization accuracy of the framework is evaluated on multiple experiments achieving timing accuracy of less than 1 ms . Furthermore, the applicability and versatility of the sensor suite is demonstrated in multiple applications including visual-inertial SLAM, multi-camera applications, multi-modal mapping, reconstruction and object based mapping.

The Connected Bike project combines several technologies, both hardware and software, to provide cycling enthusiasts with a modern alternative solution for training. Therefore, a trainer can monitor online through a Web Application some of the important parameters for training, more specifically the speed, cadence and power generated by the cyclist. Also, the trainer can see at every moment where the rider is with the aid of a GPS module. The system is built out of both hardware and software components. The hardware is in charge of collecting, scaling, converting and sending data from sensors. On the software side, there is the server, which consists of the Back-End and the MQTT (Message Queues Telemetry Transport) Broker, as well as the Front-End of the Web Application that displays and manages data as well as collaboration between cyclists and trainers. Finally, there is the Android Application that acts like a remote command for the hardware module on the bike, giving the rider control over how and when the ride is monitored.

While polymeric fabrication processes, including recent advances in additive manufacturing, have revolutionized manufacturing, little work has been done on effective sensing elements compatible with and embedded within polymeric structures. In this paper, we describe the development and evaluation of two important sensing modalities for embedding in polymeric mechatronic and robotic mechanisms: multi-axis flexure joint angle sensing utilizing IR phototransistors, and a small (12 mm), three-axis force sensing via embedded silicon strain gages with similar performance characteristics as an equally sized metal element based sensor.

A very interesting and useful complement to classical cash-registers is presented in this paper, coming up with a real-time auto-counting solution for the money inside a cash drawer. The system allows knowing not only the total amount of money but also how many coins and banknotes there are of each value. The embedded solution developed has been intended to become a low-cost solution, allowing better control over the money and helping both owners and workers in the establishments. By using this system, new utilities including automatic final balancing, instant error handling when making operations, and the lack of certain types of banknotes or coins inside the drawer or the excess of some in a certain compartment, could be implemented. Coins-counting solution is based on their weight, and small individual scales made by load cells have been integrated in each coin compartment. With respect to the banknotes, an innovative alternative based on the electrical properties of capacitors is presented. Additionally, considering the relevance of interoperability in today’s systems, a Bluetooth module has been integrated into the system, allowing for data to be accessed remotely from any smartphone, tablet or computer within the range of the module. In this work, an Android application to both control and interact with the system has also been designed.

Embedded optical fibre sensors are considered for structural health monitoring purposes in numerous applications. In fibre reinforced plastics, embedded fibre Bragg gratings are found to be one of the most popular and reliable solutions for strain monitoring. Despite of their growing popularity, users should keep in mind their shortcomings, many of which are associated with the embedding process. This review paper starts with an overview of some of the technical issues to be considered when embedding fibre optics in fibrous composite materials. Next, a monitoring scheme is introduced which shows the different steps necessary to relate the output of an embedded FBG to the strain of the structure in which it is embedded. Each step of the process has already been addressed separately in literature without considering the complete cycle, from embedding of the sensor to the internal strain measurement of the structure. This review paper summarizes the work reported in literature and tries to fit it into the big picture of internal strain measurements with embedded fibre Bragg gratings. The last part of the paper focuses on temperature compensation methods which should not be ignored in terms of in-situ measurement of strains with fibre Bragg gratings. Throughout the paper criticism is given where appropriate, which should be regarded as opportunities for future research.

In this paper, we describe a new low-cost and portable electronic nose instrument, the Multisensory Odor Olfactory System MOOSY4. This prototype is based on only four metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors suitable for IoT technology. The system architecture consists of four stages: data acquisition, data storage, data processing, and user interfacing. The designed eNose was tested with experiment for detection of volatile components in water pollution, as a dimethyl disulphide or dimethyl diselenide or sulphur. Therefore, the results provide evidence that odor information can be recognized with around 86% efficiency, detecting smells unwanted in the water and improving the quality control in bottled water factories.
