Electrical stimulation can be used in several applications such as fatigue reduction, muscle rehabilitation, neurorehabilitation, neuro-prosthesis and pain relief. Moreover, electrical stimulation can be used for drug delivery applications or body fluids extraction (e.g., sweat and interstitial fluid) to successively monitor several parameters, such as glucose, lactate, etc. All these applications are performed using electrical stimulator devices capable of applying constant voltage pulses or constant current pulses via electrodes to human tissues. Usually, constant current stimulators are most widely used because of their safety, stability, and repeatability. Thus, the aim of this work was to design, realize and test a mixed-signal electronic interface capable of producing current pulses with custom amplitude, duration, frequency, polarity and symmetry with extended voltage compliance. To achieve this result, we developed a high-voltage current stimulator suitable for iontophoresis applications. Current stimuli can be applied setting the intensity, frequency and duty cycle of the stimulation patterns through a µC. A custom electronic interface was designed to allow the control of the injected current in real time and to prevent electrical injuries to the patient by avoiding potential unwanted short circuits. Moreover, the system was tested in a simulated environment demonstrating its effectiveness and applicability for transdermal monitoring applications. The obtained results show that the device is able to apply monophasic and biphasic pulses, ranging from 0.1 to 10 mA, with a maximum error of about 10% at the minimum intensity; in addition, current stimuli can be applied up to a maximum frequency of 100 kHz with a voltage compliance of 120 V.

Positioning systems are used in a wide range of applications which require determining the position of an object in space, such as locating and tracking assets, people and goods; assisting navigation systems; and mapping. Indoor Positioning Systems (IPSs) are used where satellite and other outdoor positioning technologies lack precision or fail. Ultra-WideBand (UWB) technology is especially suitable for an IPS, as it operates under high data transfer rates over short distances and at low power densities, although signals tend to be disrupted by various objects. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the precision, failure, and accuracy of 2D IPSs based on UWB technology and a pseudo-range multilateration algorithm using Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) signals. As a case study, the positioning of a 4×4m2 area, four anchors (transceivers), and one tag (receiver) are considered using bitcraze’s Loco Positioning System. A Cramér–Rao Lower Bound analysis identifies the convex hull of the anchors as the region with highest precision, taking into account the anisotropic radiation pattern of the anchors’ antennas as opposed to ideal signal distributions, while bifurcation envelopes containing the anchors are defined to bound the regions in which the IPS is predicted to fail. This allows the formulation of a so-called flyable area, defined as the intersection between the convex hull and the region outside the bifurcation envelopes. Finally, the static bias is measured after applying a built-in Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and mapped using a Radial Basis Function Network (RBFN). A debiasing filter is then developed to improve the accuracy. Findings and developments are experimentally validated, with the IPS observed to fail near the anchors, precision around ±3cm, and accuracy improved by about 15cm for static and 5cm for dynamic measurements, on average.

This is a review focused on advances and current limitations of computer vision (CV) and how CV can help us obtain to more autonomous actions in surgery. It is a follow-up article to one that we previously published in Sensors entitled, “Artificial Intelligence Surgery: How Do We Get to Autonomous Actions in Surgery?” As opposed to that article that also discussed issues of machine learning, deep learning and natural language processing, this review will delve deeper into the field of CV. Additionally, non-visual forms of data that can aid computerized robots in the performance of more autonomous actions, such as instrument priors and audio haptics, will also be highlighted. Furthermore, the current existential crisis for surgeons, endoscopists and interventional radiologists regarding more autonomy during procedures will be discussed. In summary, this paper will discuss how to harness the power of CV to keep doctors who do interventions in the loop.

Bone metastases and osteoid osteoma (OO) have a high incidence in patients facing primary lesions in many organs. Radiotherapy has long been the standard choice for these patients, performed as stand-alone or in conjunction with surgery. However, the needs of these patients have never been fully met, especially in the ones with low life expectancy, where treatments devoted to pain reduction are pivotal. New techniques as hyperthermia treatments (HTs) are emerging to reduce the associated pain of bone metastases and OO. Temperature monitoring during HTs may significantly improve the clinical outcomes since the amount of thermal injury depends on the tissue temperature and the exposure time. This is particularly relevant in bone tumors due to the adjacent vulnerable structures (e.g., spinal cord and nerve roots). In this Review, we focus on the potential of temperature monitoring on HT of bone cancer. Preclinical and clinical studies have been proposed and are underway to investigate the use of different thermometric techniques in this scenario. We review these studies, the principle of work of the thermometric techniques used in HTs, their strengths, weaknesses, and pitfalls, as well as the strategies and the potential of improving the HTs outcomes.

This work proposes a model describing the dynamic behavior of sensing films based on functionalized MWCNT networks in terms of conductivity when exposed to time-variable concentrations of NO2 and operating with variable working temperatures. To test the proposed model, disordered networks of MWCNTs functionalized with COOH and Au nanoparticles were exploited. The model is derived from theoretical descriptions of the electronic transport in the nanotube network, of the NO2 chemisorption reaction and of the interaction of these two phenomena. The model is numerically implemented and then identified by estimating all the chemical/physical quantities involved and acting as parameters, through a model fitting procedure. Satisfactory results were obtained in the fitting process, and the identified model was used to further the analysis of the MWCNT sensing in dynamical conditions.

Iodine is a trace chemical element fundamental for a healthy human organism. Iodine deficiency affects about 2 billion people worldwide causing from mild to severe neurological impairment, especially in children. Nevertheless, an adequate nutritional intake is considered the best approach to prevent such disorders. Iodine is present in seawater and seafood, and its common forms in the diet are iodide and iodate; most iodide in seawater is caused by the biological reduction of the thermodynamically stable iodate species. On this basis, a multisensor instrument which is able to perform a multidimensional assessment, evaluating iodide content in seawater and seafood (via an electrochemical sensor) and discriminating when the seafood is fresh or defrosted quality (via a Quartz Micro balance (QMB)-based volatile and gas sensor), is strategic for seafood quality assurance. Moreover, an electronic interface has been opportunely designed and simulated for a low-power portable release of the device, which should be able to identify seafood over or under an iodide threshold previously selected. The electrochemical sensor has been successfully calibrated in the range 10–640 μg/L, obtaining a root mean square error in cross validation (RMSECV) of only 1.6 μg/L. Fresh and defrosted samples of cod, sea bream and blue whiting fish have been correctly discriminated. This proof-of-concept work has demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed application which must be replicated in a real scenario.

This paper investigated the achievable accuracy from a low-cost RTK (Real Time Kinematic)/PPK (Post Processing Kinematic) GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) system installed on board a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), employing three different types of GNSS Bases (Alloy, RS2 and RING) working in PPK mode. To evaluate the quality of the results, a set of seven GCPs (Ground Control Points) measured by means of the NRTK (Network Real Time Kinematic) technique was used. The outcomes show a RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) of 0.0189 m for an ALLOY Base, 0.0194 m for an RS2 Base and 0.0511 m for RING Base, respectively, on the vertical value of DEMs (Digital Elevation Models) obtained by a photogrammetric process. This indicates that, when changing the Base for the PPK, the solutions are different, but they can still be considered adequate for precision positioning with UAVs, especially when GCPs could be used with some difficulty. Therefore, the integration of a RTK/PPK GNSS module on a UAV allows the reconstruction of a highly detailed and precise DEM without using GCPs and provides the possibility to carry out surveys in inaccessible areas.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis supports diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), however a number of issues limits its potentialities in clinical practice. Here, a newly developed technique for fluid voltammetry, relying on a simple sensor (BIOsensor-based multisensorial system for mimicking Nose, Tongue and Eyes, BIONOTE), was used to test the applicability for CSF analysis. BIONOTE was initially calibrated on an artificial CSF-like solution and then applied on human CSF, either immediately after collection or after refrigerated storage. Following optimization, it was used to evaluate 11 CSF samples correlating the electrochemical dataset with CSF routine parameters and biomarkers of neurodegeneration. Multivariate data analysis was performed for model elaboration and calibration using principal component analysis and partial least squares discriminant analysis. BIONOTE presented a high capacity to predict both physiological and pathological constituents of artificial CSF. It differentiated distinct fresh human CSF samples well but lost accuracy after refrigerated storage. The electrochemical analysis-derived data correlated with either CSF routine cytochemical indexes or a biomarker of neurodegeneration. BIONOTE resulted as being a reliable system for electrochemical analysis of CSF. The CSF fingerprint provided by the sensor has shown itself to be sensitive to CSF modification, thus it is potentially representative of CSF alteration. This result opens the way to its testing in further study addressed at assessing the clinical relevance of the methodology. Because of its advantages due to the ease and rapidity of the methodology, a validation study is now required to translate the technique into clinical practice and improve diagnostic workup of NDs.

The use of wearable sensors for health monitoring is rapidly growing. Over the past decade, wearable technology has gained much attention from the tech industry for commercial reasons and the interest of researchers and clinicians for reasons related to its potential benefit on patients’ health. Wearable devices use advanced and specialized sensors able to monitor not only activity parameters, such as heart rate or step count, but also physiological parameters, such as heart electrical activity or blood pressure. Electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring is becoming one of the most attractive health-related features of modern smartwatches, and, because cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of death globally, the use of a smartwatch to monitor patients could greatly impact the disease outcomes on health care systems. Commercial wearable devices are able to record just single-lead ECG using a couple of metallic contact dry electrodes. This kind of measurement can be used only for arrhythmia diagnosis. For the diagnosis of other cardiac disorders, additional ECG leads are required. In this study, we characterized an electronic interface to be used with multiple contactless capacitive electrodes in order to develop a wearable ECG device able to perform several lead measurements. We verified the ability of the electronic interface to amplify differential biopotentials and to reject common-mode signals produced by electromagnetic interference (EMI). We developed a portable device based on the studied electronic interface that represents a prototype system for further developments. We evaluated the performances of the developed device. The signal-to-noise ratio of the output signal is favorable, and all the features needed for a clinical evaluation (P waves, QRS complexes and T waves) are clearly readable.

This paper introduces the electronic interface for a capacitive airborne particle matter detector. The proposed circuit relies on two matched ring oscillators and a mixer to detect the frequency difference induced by the deposition of a particle onto an interdigitated capacitor, which constitutes the load of one of the oscillators. The output of the mixer is digitized through a simple counter. In order to compensate the oscillation frequency offset of the two ring oscillators due to process and mismatch variations, a capacitive trimming circuit has been implemented. The sensor is connected to host through an I2C interface for communication and configuration. The sensor has been implemented using a standard 130-nm CMOS technology by STMicroelectronics and occupies 0.12-mm2 die area. Experimental measurements using talcum powder show a sensitivity of 60 kHz/fF and a 3σ resolution equal to 165 aF.

In the present work, a spar-buoy scaled model was designed and built through a “Lab-on-Sea” unit, equipped with an energy harvesting system. Such a system is based on deformable bands, which are loyal to the unit, to convert wave motion energy into electricity by means of piezo patch transducers. In a preliminary stage, the scaled model, suitable for tests in a controlled ripples-type wave motion channel, was tested in order to verify the “fixed-point” assumption in pitch and roll motions and, consequently, to optimize energy harvesting. A special type of structure was designed, numerically simulated, and experimentally verified. The proposed solution represents an advantageous compromise between the lightness of the used materials and the amount of recoverable energy. The energy, which was obtained from the piezo patch transducers during the simulations in the laboratory, was found to be enough to self-sustain the feasible on-board sensors and the remote data transmission system.

Residual motion of upper limbs in individuals who experienced cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) is vital to achieve functional independence. Several interventions were developed to restore shoulder range of motion (ROM) in CSCI patients. However, shoulder ROM assessment in clinical practice is commonly limited to use of a simple goniometer. Conventional goniometric measurements are operator-dependent and require significant time and effort. Therefore, innovative technology for supporting medical personnel in objectively and reliably measuring the efficacy of treatments for shoulder ROM in CSCI patients would be extremely desirable. This study evaluated the validity of a customized wireless wearable sensors (Inertial Measurement Units—IMUs) system for shoulder ROM assessment in CSCI patients in clinical setting. Eight CSCI patients and eight healthy controls performed four shoulder movements (forward flexion, abduction, and internal and external rotation) with dominant arm. Every movement was evaluated with a goniometer by different testers and with the IMU system at the same time. Validity was evaluated by comparing IMUs and goniometer measurements using Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and Limits of Agreement (LOA). inter-tester reliability of IMUs and goniometer measurements was also investigated. Preliminary results provide essential information on the accuracy of the proposed wireless wearable sensors system in acquiring objective measurements of the shoulder movements in CSCI patients.

In this study, a novel approach was developed to quantify endocannabinoids (eCBs), and was based on the liquid biosensor BIONOTE. This device is composed of a probe that can be immersed in a solution, and an electronic interface that can record a current related to the oxy-reductive reactions occurring in the sample. The two most representative members of eCBs have been analysed in vitro by BIONOTE: anandamide (N-arachidonoylethanolamine, AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG). Bovine serum albumin was used to functionalize the probe and improve the sensibility of the whole analytical system. We show that BIONOTE is able to detect both AEA and 2-AG at concentrations in the low nanomolar range, and to discriminate between these eCBs and their moieties arachidonic acid, ethanolamine and glycerol. Notably, BIONOTE distinguished these five different molecules, and it was also able to quantify AEA in human plasma. Although this is just a proof-of-concept study, we suggest BIONOTE as a cheap and user-friendly prototype sensor for high throughput quantitation of eCB content in biological matrices, with an apparent diagnostic potential for tomorrow’s medicine.

In this paper, NO2 sensing by means of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) networks, decorated with nanoparticles of TiO2 and Au, is proposed. In particular, it is shown that the performance of these materials can be enhanced using pulsed temperature mode. This sensing strategy effectiveness is theoretically and experimentally assessed. In this paper, in fact, a dynamic model for conductive gas sensors formed by networks of nanowires, considering the junctions between different wires as the main contribution to sensor conductance, and in the presence of the target gas, is presented and validated. The model accounts for variable temperature and gas concentration and sheds some light on the mechanisms leading to the sensor response improvement related to temperature pulsed working mode. It is also shown how the addition of a different material can be modeled through different surface adsorption kinetics.

Multispectral photoacoustic imaging has been widely explored as an emerging tool to visualize and quantify tissue chromophores noninvasively. This modality can capture the spectral absorption signature of prominent tissue chromophores, such as oxygenated, deoxygenated hemoglobin, and other biomarkers in the tissue by using spectral unmixing methods. Currently, most of the reported image processing algorithms use standard unmixing procedures, which include user interaction in the form of providing the expected spectral signatures. For translational research with patients, these types of supervised spectral unmixing can be challenging, as the spectral signature of the tissues can differ with respect to the disease condition. Imaging exogenous contrast agents and accessing their biodistribution can also be problematic, as some of the contrast agents are susceptible to change in spectral properties after the tissue interaction. In this work, we investigated the feasibility of an unsupervised spectral unmixing algorithm to detect and extract the tissue chromophores without any a-priori knowledge and user interaction. The algorithm has been optimized for multispectral photoacoustic imaging in the spectral range of 680–900 nm. The performance of the algorithm has been tested on simulated data, tissue-mimicking phantom, and also on the detection of exogenous contrast agents after the intravenous injection in mice. Our finding shows that the proposed automatic, unsupervised spectral unmixing method has great potential to extract and quantify the tissue chromophores, and this can be used in any wavelength range of the multispectral photoacoustic images.

Bones are a frequent site of metastases that cause intolerable cancer-related pain in 90% of patients, making their quality of life poor. In this scenario, being able to treat bone oncology patients by means of minimally invasive techniques can be crucial to avoid surgery-related risks and decrease hospitalization times. The use of microwave ablation (MWA) is gaining broad clinical acceptance to treat bone tumors. It is worth investigating temperature variations in bone tissue undergoing MWA because the clinical outcomes can be inferred from this parameter. Several feasibility studies have been performed, but an experimental analysis of the temperature trends reached into the bone during the MWA has not yet been assessed. In this work, a multi-point temperature study along the bone structure during such treatment is presented. The study has been carried out on ex vivo bovine femur and tibia, subjected to MWA. An overall of 40 measurement points covering a large sensing area was obtained for each configuration. Temperature monitoring was performed by using 40 fiber Bragg grating (FBGs) sensors (four arrays each housing 10 FBGs), inserted into the bones at specific distances to the microwave antenna. As result, the ability of this experimental multi-point monitoring approach in tracking temperature variations within bone tissue during MWA treatments was shown. This study lays the foundations for the design of a novel approach to study the effects of MWA on bone tumors. As consequence, the MWA treatment settings could be optimized in order to maximize the treatment effects of such a promising clinical application, but also customized for the specific tumor and patient.

In this work an array of chemical sensors for gas detection has been developed, starting with a commercial sensor platform developed by Microchip (GestIC), which is normally used to detect, trace, and classify hand movements in space. The system is based on electric field changes, and in this work, it has been used as mechanism revealing the adsorption of chemical species CO2 and O2. The system is composed of five electrodes, and their responses were obtained by interfacing the sensors with an acquisition board based on an ATMEGA 328 microprocessor (Atmel MEGA AVR microcontroller). A dedicated measurement chamber was designed and prototyped in acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) using an Ultimaker3 3D printer. The measurement cell size is 120 × 85 mm. Anthocyanins (red rose) were used as a sensing material in order to functionalize the sensor surface. The sensor was calibrated using different concentrations of oxygen and carbon dioxide, ranging from 5% to 25%, mixed with water vapor in the range from 50% to 90%. The sensor exhibits good repeatability for CO2 concentrations. To better understand the sensor response characteristics, sensitivity and resolution were calculated from the response curves at different working points. The sensitivity is in the order of magnitude of tens to hundreds of µV/% for CO2, and of µV/% in the case of O2. The resolution is in the range of 10−1%−10−3% for CO2, and it is around 10−1% for O2. The system could be specialized for different fields, for environmental, medical, and food applications.

Optical sensors can be used to assess crop N status to assist with N fertilizer management. Differences between cultivars may affect optical sensor measurement. Cultivar effects on measurements made with the SPAD-502 (Soil Plant Analysis Development) meter and the MC-100 (Chlorophyll Concentration Meter), and of several vegetation indices measured with the Crop Circle ACS470 canopy reflectance sensor, were assessed. A cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) crop was grown in a greenhouse, with three cultivars. Each cultivar received three N treatments, of increasing N concentration, being deficient (N1), sufficient (N2) and excessive (N3). There were significant differences between cultivars in the measurements made with both chlorophyll meters, particularly when N supply was sufficient and excessive (N2 and N3 treatments, respectively). There were no consistent differences between cultivars in vegetation indices. Optical sensor measurements were strongly linearly related to leaf N content in each of the three cultivars. The lack of a consistent effect of cultivar on the relationship with leaf N content suggests that a unique equation to estimate leaf N content from vegetation indices can be applied to all three cultivars. Results of chlorophyll meter measurements suggest that care should be taken when using sufficiency values, determined for a particular cultivar

Methods for the chemical and sensorial evaluation of olive oil are frequently changed and tuned to oppose the increasingly sophisticated frauds. Although a plethora of promising alternatives has been developed, chromatographic techniques remain the more reliable yet, even at the expense of their related execution time and costs. In perspective of a continuous increment in the number of the analyses as a result of the global market, more rapid and effective methods to guarantee the safety of the olive oil trade are required. In this study, a novel artificial sensorial system, based on gas and liquid analysis, has been employed to deal with olive oil genuineness and authenticity issues. Despite these sensors having been widely used in the field of food science, the innovative electronic interface of the device is able to provide a higher reproducibility and sensitivity of the analysis. The multi-parametric platform demonstrated the capability to evaluate the organoleptic properties of extra-virgin olive oils as well as to highlight the presence of adulterants at blending concentrations usually not detectable through other methods.

One of the basic needs of professional athletes is the real-time and non-invasive monitoring of their activities. The use of these kind of data is necessary to develop strategies for specific tailored training in order to improve performances. The sensor system presented in this work has the aim to adopt a novel approach for the monitoring of physiological parameters, and athletes’ performances, during their training. The anaerobic threshold is herein identified with the monitoring of the lactate concentration and the respiratory parameters. The data collected by the sensor are used to build a model using a supervised method (based on the partial least squares method, PLS) to predict the values of the parameters of interest. The sensor is able to measure the lactate concentration from a sample of saliva and it can estimate a respiratory parameter, such as maximal oxygen consumption, maximal carbon dioxide production and respiratory rate from a sample of exhaled breath. The main advantages of the device are the low power; the wireless communication; and the non-invasive sampling method, which allow its use in a real context of sport practice.

Chlorophyll meters are promising tools for improving the nitrogen (N) management of vegetable crops. To facilitate on-farm use of these meters, sufficiency values that identify deficient and sufficient crop N status are required. This work evaluated the ability of three chlorophyll meters (SPAD-502, atLEAF+, and MC-100) to assess crop N status in sweet pepper. It also determined sufficiency values for optimal N nutrition for each meter for pepper. The experimental work was conducted in a greenhouse, in Almería, Spain, very similar to those used for commercial production, in three different crops grown with fertigation. In each crop, there were five treatments of different N concentration in the nutrient solution, applied in each irrigation, ranging from a very deficient to very excessive N supply. In general, chlorophyll meter measurements were strongly related to crop N status in all phenological stages of the three crops, indicating that these measurements are good indicators of the crop N status of pepper. Sufficiency values determined for each meter for the four major phenological stages were consistent between the three crops. This demonstrated the potential for using these meters with sufficiency values to improve the N management of commercial sweet pepper crops.

Sensors are often organized in multidimensional systems or networks for particular applications. This is facilitated by the large improvements in the miniaturization process, power consumption reduction and data analysis techniques nowadays possible. Such sensors are frequently organized in multidimensional arrays oriented to the realization of artificial sensorial systems mimicking the mechanisms of human senses. Instruments that make use of these sensors are frequently employed in the fields of medicine and food science. Among them, the so-called electronic nose and tongue are becoming more and more popular. In this paper an innovative multisensorial system based on sensing materials of biological origin is illustrated. Anthocyanins are exploited here as chemical interactive materials for both quartz microbalance (QMB) transducers used as gas sensors and for electrodes used as liquid electrochemical sensors. The optical properties of anthocyanins are well established and widely used, but they have never been exploited as sensing materials for both gas and liquid sensors in non-optical applications. By using the same set of selected anthocyanins an integrated system has been realized, which includes a gas sensor array based on QMB and a sensor array for liquids made up of suitable Ion Sensitive Electrodes (ISEs). The arrays are also monitored from an optical point of view. This embedded system, is intended to mimic the working principles of the nose, tongue and eyes. We call this setup BIONOTE (for BIOsensor-based multisensorial system for mimicking NOse, Tongue and Eyes). The complete design, fabrication and calibration processes of the BIONOTE system are described herein, and a number of preliminary results are discussed. These results are relative to: (a) the characterization of the optical properties of the tested materials; (b) the performance of the whole system as gas sensor array with respect to ethanol, hexane and isopropyl alcohol detection (concentration range 0.1–7 ppm) and as a liquid sensor array (concentration range 73–98 μM).

Active life monitoring via chemosensitive sensors could hold promise for enhancing athlete monitoring, training optimization, and performance in athletes. The present work investigates a resistive flex sensor (RFS) in the guise of a chemical sensor. Its carbon ‘texture’ has shown to be sensitive to CO2, O2, and RH changes; moreover, different bending conditions can modulate its sensitivity and selectivity for these gases and vapors. A three-step feasibility study is presented including: design and fabrication of the electronic read-out and control; calibration of the sensors to CO2, O2 and RH; and a morphological study of the material when interacting with the gas and vapor molecules. The 0.1 mm−1 curvature performs best among the tested configurations. It shows a linear response curve for each gas, the ranges of concentrations are adequate, and the sensitivity is good for all gases. The curvature can be modulated during data acquisition to tailor the sensitivity and selectivity for a specific gas. In particular, good results have been obtained with a curvature of 0.1 mm−1. For O2 in the range of 20–70%, the sensor has a sensitivity of 0.7 mV/%. For CO2 in the range of 4–80%, the sensitivity is 3.7 mV/%, and for RH the sensitivity is 33 mV/%. Additionally, a working principle, based on observation via scanning electron microscopy, has been proposed to explain the chemical sensing potential of this sensor. Bending seems to enlarge the cracks present in the RFS coverage; this change accounts for the altered selectivity depending on the sensor’s curvature. Further studies are needed to confirm result’s reliability and the correctness of the interpretation.

Monitoring heart rate (HR) through photoplethysmography (PPG) signals is a challenging task due to the complexities involved, even during routine daily activities. These signals can indeed be heavily contaminated by significant motion artifacts resulting from the subjects’ movements, which can lead to inaccurate heart rate estimations. In this paper, our objective is to present an innovative necklace sensor that employs low-computational-cost algorithms for heart rate estimation in individuals performing non-abrupt movements, specifically drivers. Our solution facilitates the acquisition of signals with limited motion artifacts and provides acceptable heart rate estimations at a low computational cost. More specifically, we propose a wearable sensor necklace for assessing a driver’s well-being by providing information about the driver’s physiological condition and potential stress indicators through HR data. This innovative necklace enables real-time HR monitoring within a sleek and ergonomic design, facilitating seamless and continuous data gathering while driving. Prioritizing user comfort, the necklace’s design ensures ease of wear, allowing for extended use without disrupting driving activities. The collected physiological data can be transmitted wirelessly to a mobile application for instant analysis and visualization. To evaluate the sensor’s performance, two algorithms for estimating the HR from PPG signals are implemented in a microcontroller: a modified version of the mountaineer’s algorithm and a sliding discrete Fourier transform. The goal of these algorithms is to detect meaningful peaks corresponding to each heartbeat by using signal processing techniques to remove noise and motion artifacts. The developed design is validated through experiments conducted in a simulated driving environment in our lab, during which drivers wore the sensor necklace. These experiments demonstrate the reliability of the wearable sensor necklace in capturing dynamic changes in HR levels associated with driving-induced stress. The algorithms integrated into the sensor are optimized for low computational cost and effectively remove motion artifacts that occur when users move their heads.

The problem of Power Quality analysis is becoming crucial to ensuring the proper functioning of complex systems and big plants. In this regard, it is essential to rapidly detect anomalies in voltage and current signals to ensure a prompt response and maximize the system’s availability with the minimum maintenance cost. In this paper, anomaly detection algorithms based on machine learning, such as One Class Support Vector Machine (OCSVM), Isolation Forest (IF), and Angle-Based Outlier Detection (ABOD), are used as a first tool for rapid and effective clustering of the measured voltage and current signals directly on-line on the sensing unit. If the proposed anomaly detection algorithm detects an anomaly, further investigations using suitable classification algorithms are required. The main advantage of the proposed solution is the ability to rapidly and efficiently detect different types of anomalies with low computational complexity, allowing the implementation of the algorithm directly on the sensor node used for signal acquisition. A suitable experimental platform has been established to evaluate the advantages of the proposed method. All the different models were tested using a consistent set of hyperparameters and an output dataset generated from the principal component analysis technique. The best results achieved included models reaching 100% recall and a 92% F1 score.

Liver fibrosis, a major global health issue, is marked by excessive collagen deposition that impairs liver function. Noninvasive methods for the direct visualization of collagen content are crucial for the early detection and monitoring of fibrosis progression. This study investigates the potential of spectral photoacoustic imaging (sPAI) to monitor collagen development in liver fibrosis. Utilizing a novel data-driven superpixel photoacoustic unmixing (SPAX) framework, we aimed to distinguish collagen presence and evaluate its correlation with fibrosis progression. We employed an established diethylnitrosamine (DEN) model in rats to study liver fibrosis over various time points. Our results revealed a significant correlation between increased collagen photoacoustic signal intensity and advanced fibrosis stages. Collagen abundance maps displayed dynamic changes throughout fibrosis progression. These findings underscore the potential of sPAI for the noninvasive monitoring of collagen dynamics and fibrosis severity assessment. This research advances the development of noninvasive diagnostic tools and personalized management strategies for liver fibrosis.

Moving target detection (MTD) is a crucial task in computer vision applications. In this paper, we investigate the problem of detecting moving targets in infrared (IR) surveillance video sequences captured using a steady camera in a maritime setting. For this purpose, we employ robust principal component analysis (RPCA), which is an improvement of principal component analysis (PCA) that separates an input matrix into the following two matrices: a low-rank matrix that is representative, in our case study, of the slowly changing background, and a sparse matrix that is representative of the foreground. RPCA is usually implemented in a non-causal batch form. To pursue a real-time application, we tested an online implementation, which, unfortunately, was affected by the presence of the target in the scene during the initialization phase. Therefore, we improved the robustness by implementing a saliency-based strategy. The advantages offered by the resulting technique, which we called “saliency-aided online moving window RPCA” (S-OMW-RPCA) are the following: RPCA is implemented online; along with the temporal features exploited by RPCA, the spatial features are also taken into consideration by using a saliency filter; the results are robust against the condition of the scene during the initialization. Finally, we compare the performance of the proposed technique in terms of precision, recall, and execution time with that of an online RPCA, thus, showing the effectiveness of the saliency-based approach.

Magnesium (Mg) alloys possess unique properties that make them ideal for use as biodegradable implants in clinical applications. However, reports on the in vivo assessment of these alloys are insufficient. Thus, monitoring the degradation of Mg and its alloys in vivo is challenging due to the dynamic process of implant degradation and tissue regeneration. Most current works focus on structural remodeling, but functional assessment is crucial in providing information about physiological changes in tissues, which can be used as an early indicator of healing. Here, we report continuous wave near-infrared spectroscopy (CW NIRS), a non-invasive technique that is potentially helpful in assessing the implant–tissue dynamic interface in a rodent model. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects on hemoglobin changes and tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) after the implantation of Mg-alloy (WE43) and titanium (Ti) implants in rats’ femurs using a multiwavelength optical probe. Additionally, the effect of changes in the skin on these parameters was evaluated. Lastly, combining NIRS with photoacoustic (PA) imaging provides a more reliable assessment of tissue parameters, which is further correlated with principal component analysis.
