Forecasts about the aging trend of the world population agree on identifying increased life expectancy as a serious risk factor for the financial sustainability of social healthcare systems if not properly supported by innovative care management policies. Such policies should include the integration within traditional healthcare services of assistive technologies as tools for prolonging healthy and independent living at home, but also for introducing innovations in clinical practice such as long-term and remote health monitoring. For their part, solutions for active and assisted living have now reached a high degree of technological maturity, thanks to the considerable amount of research work carried out in recent years to develop highly reliable and energy-efficient wearable sensors capable of enabling the development of systems to monitor activity and physiological parameters over time, and in a minimally invasive manner. This work reviews the role of wearable sensors in the design and development of assisted living solutions, focusing on human activity recognition by joint use of onboard electromyography sensors and inertial measurement units and on the acquisition of parameters related to overall physical and psychological conditions, such as heart activity and skin conductance.

This study explores the integration of blockchain technology in wearable health devices through the design and development of a Smart Fidget Toy. We aimed to investigate design challenges and opportunities of blockchain-based health devices, examine the impact of blockchain integration user experience, and assess its potential to improve data control and user trust. Using an iterative user-centered design approach, we developed a mid-fidelity prototype of a physical fidget device with a blockchain-based web application. Our key contributions include the design of a fidget toy using blockchain for secure health data management, an iterative development process balancing user needs with blockchain integration challenges, and insights into user perceptions of blockchain wearables for health. We conducted user studies, including a survey (n = 28), focus group (n = 6), interactive wireframe testing (n = 7), and prototype testing (n = 10). Our study revealed high user interest (70%) in blockchain-based data control and sharing features and improved perceived security of data (90% of users) with blockchain integration. However, we also identified challenges in user understanding of blockchain concepts, necessitating additional support. Our smart contract, deployed on the Polygon zkEVM testnet, efficiently manages data storage and retrieval while maintaining user privacy. This research advances the understanding of blockchain applications in health wearables, offering valuable insights for the future development of this field.

Flexible and stretchable electronics have emerged as a groundbreaking technology with wide-ranging applications, including wearable devices, medical implants, and environmental monitoring systems. Among their numerous applications, hydrogen sensing represents a critical area of research, particularly due to hydrogen’s role as a clean energy carrier and its explosive nature at high concentrations. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advancements in flexible and stretchable electronics tailored for resistive hydrogen sensing applications. It begins by introducing the fundamental principles underlying the operation of flexible and stretchable resistive sensors, highlighting the innovative materials and fabrication techniques that enable their exceptional mechanical resilience and adaptability. Following this, the paper delves into the specific strategies employed in the integration of these resistive sensors into hydrogen detection systems, discussing the merits and limitations of various sensor designs, from nanoscale transducers to fully integrated wearable devices. Special attention is paid to the sensitivity, selectivity, and operational stability of these resistive sensors, as well as their performance under real-world conditions. Furthermore, the review explores the challenges and opportunities in this rapidly evolving field, including the scalability of manufacturing processes, the integration of resistive sensor networks, and the development of standards for safety and performance. Finally, the review concludes with a forward-looking perspective on the potential impacts of flexible and stretchable resistive electronics in hydrogen energy systems and safety applications, underscoring the need for interdisciplinary collaboration to realize the full potential of this innovative technology.

Low-cost, portable devices capable of accurate physiological measurements are attractive tools for coaches, athletes, and practitioners. The purpose of this study was primarily to establish the validity and reliability of Movesense HR+ ECG measurements compared to the criterion three-lead ECG, and secondarily, to test the industry leader Garmin HRM. Twenty-one healthy adults participated in running and cycling incremental test protocols to exhaustion, both with rest before and after. Movesense HR+ demonstrated consistent and accurate R-peak detection, with an overall sensitivity of 99.7% and precision of 99.6% compared to the criterion; Garmin HRM sensitivity and precision were 84.7% and 87.7%, respectively. Bland–Altman analysis compared to the criterion indicated mean differences (SD) in RR’ intervals of 0.23 (22.3) ms for Movesense HR+ at rest and 0.38 (18.7) ms during the incremental test. The mean difference for Garmin HRM-Pro at rest was −8.5 (111.5) ms and 27.7 (128.7) ms for the incremental test. The incremental test correlation was very strong (r = 0.98) between Movesense HR+ and criterion, and moderate (r = 0.66) for Garmin HRM-Pro. This study developed a robust peak detection algorithm and data collection protocol for Movesense HR+ and established its validity and reliability for ECG measurement.

There are two widely used methods to measure the cardiac cycle and obtain heart rate measurements: the electrocardiogram (ECG) and the photoplethysmogram (PPG). The sensors used in these methods have gained great popularity in wearable devices, which have extended cardiac monitoring beyond the hospital environment. However, the continuous monitoring of ECG signals via mobile devices is challenging, as it requires users to keep their fingers pressed on the device during data collection, making it unfeasible in the long term. On the other hand, the PPG does not contain this limitation. However, the medical knowledge to diagnose these anomalies from this sign is limited by the need for familiarity, since the ECG is studied and used in the literature as the gold standard. To minimize this problem, this work proposes a method, PPG2ECG, that uses the correlation between the domains of PPG and ECG signals to infer from the PPG signal the waveform of the ECG signal. PPG2ECG consists of mapping between domains by applying a set of convolution filters, learning to transform a PPG input signal into an ECG output signal using a U-net inception neural network architecture. We assessed our proposed method using two evaluation strategies based on personalized and generalized models and achieved mean error values of 0.015 and 0.026, respectively. Our method overcomes the limitations of previous approaches by providing an accurate and feasible method for continuous monitoring of ECG signals through PPG signals. The short distances between the infer-red ECG and the original ECG demonstrate the feasibility and potential of our method to assist in the early identification of heart diseases.

In the evolving field of human–computer interaction (HCI), gesture recognition has emerged as a critical focus, with smart gloves equipped with sensors playing one of the most important roles. Despite the significance of dynamic gesture recognition, most research on data gloves has concentrated on static gestures, with only a small percentage addressing dynamic gestures or both. This study explores the development of a low-cost smart glove prototype designed to capture and classify dynamic hand gestures for game control and presents a prototype of data gloves equipped with five flex sensors, five force sensors, and one inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor. To classify dynamic gestures, we developed a neural network-based classifier, utilizing a convolutional neural network (CNN) with three two-dimensional convolutional layers and rectified linear unit (ReLU) activation where its accuracy was 90%. The developed glove effectively captures dynamic gestures for game control, achieving high classification accuracy, precision, and recall, as evidenced by the confusion matrix and training metrics. Despite limitations in the number of gestures and participants, the solution offers a cost-effective and accurate approach to gesture recognition, with potential applications in VR/AR environments.

The widespread use of wearable devices has enabled continuous monitoring of biometric data, including heart rate variability (HRV) and resting heart rate (RHR). However, the validity of these measurements, particularly from consumer devices like Apple Watch, remains underexplored. This study aimed to validate HRV measurements obtained from Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 against the Polar H10 chest strap paired with the Kubios HRV software, which together served as the reference standard. A prospective cohort of 39 healthy adults provided 316 HRV measurements over a 14-day period. Generalized Estimating Equations were used to assess the difference in HRV between devices, accounting for repeated measures. Apple Watch tended to underestimate HRV by an average of 8.31 ms compared to the Polar H10 (p = 0.025), with a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 28.88% and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 20.46 ms. The study found no significant impact of RHR discrepancies on HRV differences (p = 0.156), with RHR showing a mean difference of −0.08 bpm, an MAPE of 5.91%, and an MAE of 3.73 bpm. Equivalence testing indicated that the HRV measurements from Apple Watch did not fall within the pre-specified equivalence margin of ±10 ms. Despite accurate RHR measurements, these findings underscore the need for improved HRV algorithms in consumer wearables and caution in interpreting HRV data for clinical or performance monitoring.

The integration of machine learning (ML) with edge computing and wearable devices is rapidly advancing healthcare applications. This study systematically maps the literature in this emerging field, analyzing 171 studies and focusing on 28 key articles after rigorous selection. The research explores the key concepts, techniques, and architectures used in healthcare applications involving ML, edge computing, and wearable devices. The analysis reveals a significant increase in research over the past six years, particularly in the last three years, covering applications such as fall detection, cardiovascular monitoring, and disease prediction. The findings highlight a strong focus on neural network models, especially Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Long Short-Term Memory Networks (LSTMs), and diverse edge computing platforms like Raspberry Pi and smartphones. Despite the diversity in approaches, the field is still nascent, indicating considerable opportunities for future research. The study emphasizes the need for standardized architectures and the further exploration of both hardware and software to enhance the effectiveness of ML-driven healthcare solutions. The authors conclude by identifying potential research directions that could contribute to continued innovation in healthcare technologies.

Exoskeletons and exosuits (collectively termed EXOs) have the potential to reduce the risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) by protecting workers from exertion and muscle fatigue due to physically demanding, repetitive, and prolonged work in construction workplaces. However, the use of EXOs in construction is in its infancy, and much of the knowledge required to drive the acceptance, adoption, and application of this technology is still lacking. The objective of this research is to identify the facilitators, barriers, and corresponding solutions to foster the adoption of EXOs in construction workplaces through a sequential, multistage Delphi approach. Eighteen experts from academia, industry, and government gathered in a workshop to provide insights and exchange opinions regarding facilitators, barriers, and potential solutions from a holistic perspective with respect to business, technology, organization, policy/regulation, ergonomics/safety, and end users (construction-trade professionals). Consensus was reached regarding all these perspectives, including top barriers and potential solution strategies. The outcomes of this study will help the community gain a comprehensive understanding of the potential for EXO use in the construction industry, which may enable the development of a viable roadmap for the evolution of EXO technology and the future of EXO-enabled workers and work in construction workplaces.

Accurate peak determination from noise-corrupted photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal is the basis for further analysis of physiological quantities such as heart rate. Conventional methods are designed for noise-free PPG signals and are insufficient for PPG signals with low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This paper focuses on enhancing PPG noise-resiliency and proposes a robust peak detection algorithm for PPG signals distorted due to noise and motion artifact. Our algorithm is based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with dilated convolutions. We train and evaluate the proposed method using a dataset collected via smartwatches under free-living conditions in a home-based health monitoring application. A data generator is also developed to produce noisy PPG data used for model training and evaluation. The method performance is compared against other state-of-the-art methods and is tested with SNRs ranging from 0 to 45 dB. Our method outperforms the existing adaptive threshold, transform-based, and machine learning methods. The proposed method shows overall precision, recall, and F1-score of 82%, 80%, and 81% in all the SNR ranges. In contrast, the best results obtained by the existing methods are 78%, 80%, and 79%. The proposed method proves to be accurate for detecting PPG peaks even in the presence of noise.

This study introduces a lightweight storage system for wearable devices, aiming to optimize energy efficiency in long-term and continuous monitoring applications. Utilizing Direct Memory Access and the Serial Peripheral Interface protocol, the system ensures efficient data transfer, significantly reduces energy consumption, and enhances the device autonomy. Data organization into Time Block Data (TBD) units, rather than files, significantly diminishes control overhead, facilitating the streamlined management of periodic data recordings in wearable devices. A comparative analysis revealed marked improvements in energy efficiency and write speed over existing file systems, validating the proposed system as an effective solution for boosting wearable device performance in health monitoring and various long-term data acquisition scenarios.

Sleep plays a role in maintaining our physical well-being. However, sleep-related issues impact millions of people globally. Accurate monitoring of sleep is vital for identifying and addressing these problems. While traditional methods like polysomnography (PSG) are commonly used in settings, they may not fully capture natural sleep patterns at home. Moreover, PSG equipment can disrupt sleep quality. In recent years, there has been growing interest in the use of sensors for sleep monitoring. These lightweight sensors can be easily integrated into textiles or wearable devices using technology. The flexible sensors can be designed for skin contact to offer continuous monitoring without being obtrusive in a home environment. This review presents an overview of the advancements made in flexible sensors for tracking body movements during sleep, which focus on their principles, mechanisms, and strategies for improved flexibility, practical applications, and future trends.

Assessing the olfactory preferences of consumers is an important aspect of fragrance product development and marketing. With the advancement of wearable device technologies, physiological signals hold great potential for evaluating olfactory preferences. However, there is currently a lack of relevant studies and specific explanatory procedures for preference assessment methods that are based on physiological signals. In response to this gap, a synchronous data acquisition system was established using the ErgoLAB multi-channel physiology instrument and olfactory experience tester. Thirty-three participants were recruited for the olfactory preference experiments, and three types of autonomic response data (skin conductance, respiration, and heart rate) were collected. The results of both individual and overall analyses indicated that olfactory preferences can lead to changes in skin conductance (SC), respiration (RESP), and heart rate (HR). The trends of change in both RESP and HR showed significant differences (with the HR being more easily distinguishable), while the SC did not exhibit significant differences across different olfactory perception preferences. Additionally, gender differences did not result in significant variations. Therefore, HR is more suitable for evaluating olfactory perception preferences, followed by RESP, while SC shows the least effect. Moreover, a logistic regression model with a high accuracy (84.1%) in predicting olfactory perception preferences was developed using the changes in the RESP and HR features. This study has significant implications for advancing the assessment of consumer olfactory preferences.

In many regions globally, including low-resource settings, there is a growing trend towards using mHealth technology, such as wearable sensors, to enhance health behaviors and outcomes. However, adoption of such devices in research conducted in low-resource settings lags behind use in high-resource areas. Moreover, there is a scarcity of research that specifically examines the user experience, readiness for and challenges of integrating wearable sensors into health research and community interventions in low-resource settings specifically. This study summarizes the reactions and experiences of young women (N = 57), ages 18 to 24 years, living in poverty in Kampala, Uganda, who wore Garmin vívoactive 3 smartwatches for five days for a research project. Data collected from the Garmins included participant location, sleep, and heart rate. Through six focus group discussions, we gathered insights about the participants’ experiences and perceptions of the wearable devices. Overall, the wearable devices were met with great interest and enthusiasm by participants. The findings were organized across 10 domains to highlight reactions and experiences pertaining to device settings, challenges encountered with the device, reports of discomfort/comfort, satisfaction, changes in daily activities, changes to sleep, speculative device usage, community reactions, community dynamics and curiosity, and general device comfort. The study sheds light on the introduction of new technology in a low-resource setting and also on the complex interplay between technology and culture in Kampala’s slums. We also learned some insights into how wearable devices and perceptions may influence behaviors and social dynamics. These practical insights are shared to benefit future research and applications by health practitioners and clinicians to advance and enhance the implementation and effectiveness of wearable devices in similar contexts and populations. These insights and user experiences, if incorporated, may enhance device acceptance and data quality for those conducting research in similar settings or seeking to address population-specific needs and health issues.

This paper presents an on-device semi-supervised human activity detection system that can learn and predict human activity patterns in real time. The clinical objective is to monitor and detect the unhealthy sedentary lifestyle of a user. The proposed semi-supervised learning (SSL) framework uses sparsely labelled user activity events acquired from Inertial Measurement Unit sensors installed as wearable devices. The proposed cluster-based learning model in this approach is trained with data from the same target user, thus preserving data privacy while providing personalized activity detection services. Two different cluster labelling strategies, namely, population-based and distance-based strategies, are employed to achieve the desired classification performance. The proposed system is shown to be highly accurate and computationally efficient for different algorithmic parameters, which is relevant in the context of limited computing resources on typical wearable devices. Extensive experimentation and simulation study have been conducted on multi-user human activity data from the public domain in order to analyze the trade-off between classification accuracy and computation complexity of the proposed learning paradigm with different algorithmic hyper-parameters. With 4.17 h of training time for 8000 activity episodes, the proposed SSL approach consumes at most 20 KB of CPU memory space, while providing a maximum accuracy of 90% and 100% classification rates.

The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of two wearable smartwatches (the Apple Watch 6 (AW) and the Galaxy Watch 4 (GW)) and smartphone applications (Apple Health for iPhone mobiles and Samsung Health for Android mobiles) for estimating step counts in daily life. A total of 104 healthy adults (36 AW, 25 GW, and 43 smartphone application users) were engaged in daily activities for 24 h while wearing an ActivPAL accelerometer on the thigh and a smartwatch on the wrist. The validities of the smartwatch and smartphone estimates of step counts were evaluated relative to criterion values obtained from an ActivPAL accelerometer. The strongest relationship between the ActivPAL accelerometer and the devices was found for the AW (r = 0.99, p < 0.001), followed by the GW (r = 0.82, p < 0.001), and the smartphone applications (r = 0.93, p < 0.001). For overall group comparisons, the MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) values (computed as the average absolute value of the group-level errors) were 6.4%, 10.5%, and 29.6% for the AW, GW, and smartphone applications, respectively. The results of the present study indicate that the AW and GW showed strong validity in measuring steps, while the smartphone applications did not provide reliable step counts in free-living conditions.

Deep learning (DL) models have shown promise for the accurate detection of atrial fibrillation (AF) from electrocardiogram/photoplethysmography (ECG/PPG) data, yet deploying these on resource-constrained wearable devices remains challenging. This study proposes integrating a customized channel attention mechanism to compress DL neural networks for AF detection, allowing the model to focus only on the most salient time-series features. The results demonstrate that applying compression through channel attention significantly reduces the total number of model parameters and file size while minimizing loss in detection accuracy. Notably, after compression, performance increases for certain model variants in key AF databases (ADB and C2017DB). Moreover, analyzing the learned channel attention distributions after training enhances the explainability of the AF detection models by highlighting the salient temporal ECG/PPG features most important for its diagnosis. Overall, this research establishes that integrating attention mechanisms is an effective strategy for compressing large DL models, making them deployable on low-power wearable devices. We show that this approach yields compressed, accurate, and explainable AF detectors ideal for wearables. Incorporating channel attention enables simpler yet more accurate algorithms that have the potential to provide clinicians with valuable insights into the salient temporal biomarkers of AF. Our findings highlight that the use of attention is an important direction for the future development of efficient, high-performing, and interpretable AF screening tools for wearable technology.

In the context in which severe visual impairment significantly affects human life, this article emphasizes the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Visible Light Communications (VLC) in developing future assistive technologies. Toward this path, the article summarizes the features of some commercial assistance solutions, and debates the characteristics of VLC and AI, emphasizing their compatibility with blind individuals’ needs. Additionally, this work highlights the AI potential in the efficient early detection of eye diseases. This article also reviews the existing work oriented toward VLC integration in blind persons’ assistive applications, showing the existing progress and emphasizing the high potential associated with VLC use. In the end, this work provides a roadmap toward the development of an integrated AI-based VLC assistance solution for visually impaired people, pointing out the high potential and some of the steps to follow. As far as we know, this is the first comprehensive work which focuses on the integration of AI and VLC technologies in visually impaired persons’ assistance domain.

Measuring pilot mental workload (MWL) is crucial for enhancing aviation safety. However, MWL is a multi-dimensional construct that could be affected by multiple factors. Particularly, in the context of a more automated cockpit setting, the traditional methods of assessing pilot MWL may face challenges. Heart rate variability (HRV) has emerged as a potential tool for detecting pilot MWL during real-flight operations. This review aims to investigate the relationship between HRV and pilot MWL and to assess the performance of machine-learning-based MWL detection systems using HRV parameters. A total of 29 relevant papers were extracted from three databases for review based on rigorous eligibility criteria. We observed significant variability across the reviewed studies, including study designs and measurement methods, as well as machine-learning techniques. Inconsistent results were observed regarding the differences in HRV measures between pilots under varying levels of MWL. Furthermore, for studies that developed HRV-based MWL detection systems, we examined the diverse model settings and discovered that several advanced techniques could be used to address specific challenges. This review serves as a practical guide for researchers and practitioners who are interested in employing HRV indicators for evaluating MWL and wish to incorporate cutting-edge techniques into their MWL measurement approaches.

Wearable in-ear electroencephalographic (EEG) devices hold significant promise for advancing brain monitoring technologies into everyday applications. However, despite the current availability of several in-ear EEG devices in the market, there remains a critical need for robust validation against established clinical-grade systems. In this study, we carried out a detailed examination of the signal performance of a mobile in-ear EEG device from Naox Technologies. Our investigation had two main goals: firstly, evaluating the hardware circuit’s reliability through simulated EEG signal experiments and, secondly, conducting a thorough comparison between the in-ear EEG device and gold-standard EEG monitoring equipment. This comparison assesses correlation coefficients with recognized physiological patterns during wakefulness and sleep, including alpha rhythms, eye artifacts, slow waves, spindles, and sleep stages. Our findings support the feasibility of using this in-ear EEG device for brain activity monitoring, particularly in scenarios requiring enhanced comfort and user-friendliness in various clinical and research settings.

This paper presents an experimental evaluation of a wearable light-emitting diode (LED) transmitter in an optical camera communications (OCC) system. The evaluation is conducted under conditions of controlled user movement during indoor physical exercise, encompassing both mild and intense exercise scenarios. We introduce an image processing algorithm designed to identify a template signal transmitted by the LED and detected within the image. To enhance this process, we utilize the dynamics of controlled exercise-induced motion to limit the tracking process to a smaller region within the image. We demonstrate the feasibility of detecting the transmitting source within the frames, and thus limit the tracking process to a smaller region within the image, achieving an reduction of 87.3% for mild exercise and 79.0% for intense exercise.

Lower extremity exercises are considered a standard and necessary treatment for rehabilitation and a well-rounded fitness routine, which builds strength, flexibility, and balance. The efficacy of rehabilitation programs hinges on meticulous monitoring of both adherence to home exercise routines and the quality of performance. However, in a home environment, patients often tend to inaccurately report the number of exercises performed and overlook the correctness of their rehabilitation motions, lacking quantifiable and systematic standards, thus impeding the recovery process. To address these challenges, there is a crucial need for a lightweight, unbiased, cost-effective, and objective wearable motion capture (Mocap) system designed for monitoring and evaluating home-based rehabilitation/fitness programs. This paper focuses on the development of such a system to gather exercise data into usable metrics. Five radio frequency (RF) inertial measurement unit (IMU) devices (RF-IMUs) were developed and strategically placed on calves, thighs, and abdomens. A two-layer long short-term memory (LSTM) model was used for fitness activity recognition (FAR) with an average accuracy of 97.4%. An intelligent smartphone algorithm was developed to track motion, recognize activity, and calculate key exercise variables in real time for squat, high knees, and lunge exercises. Additionally, a 3D avatar on the smartphone App allows users to observe and track their progress in real time or by replaying their exercise motions. A dynamic time warping (DTW) algorithm was also integrated into the system for scoring the similarity in two motions. The system’s adaptability shows promise for applications in medical rehabilitation and sports.

Wearable sensors could be beneficial for the continuous quantification of upper limb motor symptoms in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). This work evaluates the use of two inertial measurement units combined with supervised machine learning models to classify and predict a subset of MDS-UPDRS III subitems in PD. We attached the two compact wearable sensors on the dorsal part of each hand of 33 people with PD and 12 controls. Each participant performed six clinical movement tasks in parallel with an assessment of the MDS-UPDRS III. Random forest (RF) models were trained on the sensor data and motor scores. An overall accuracy of 94% was achieved in classifying the movement tasks. When employed for classifying the motor scores, the averaged area under the receiver operating characteristic values ranged from 68% to 92%. Motor scores were additionally predicted using an RF regression model. In a comparative analysis, trained support vector machine models outperformed the RF models for specific tasks. Furthermore, our results surpass the literature in certain cases. The methods developed in this work serve as a base for future studies, where home-based assessments of pharmacological effects on motor function could complement regular clinical assessments.

This work proposes a highly sensitive sandwich heterostructure multimode optical fiber microbend sensor for heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), and ballistocardiography (BCG) monitoring, which is fabricated by combining a sandwich heterostructure multimode fiber Mach–Zehnder interferometer (SHMF-MZI) with a microbend deformer. The parameters of the SHMF-MZI sensor and the microbend deformer were analyzed and optimized in detail, and then the new encapsulated method of the wearable device was put forward. The proposed wearable sensor could greatly enhance the response to the HR signal. The performances for HR, RR, and BCG monitoring were as good as those of the medically approved commercial monitors. The sensor has the advantages of high sensitivity, easy fabrication, and good stability, providing the potential for application in the field of daily supervision and health monitoring.

Data are acquired through wearable technologies, which generally capture simple data points, which in the case of many team-based sports are times, latitudes, and longitudes. While the data capture is simple and in relatively high volumes, the raw data are unsuited to any form of analysis or machine learning functions. The main goal of this research is to develop a multistep feature engineering framework that delivers the transformation of sequential data into feature sets more suited to machine learning applications.

This study investigates the biomechanical impact of a passive Arm-Support Exoskeleton (ASE) on workers in wool textile processing. Eight workers, equipped with surface electrodes for electromyography (EMG) recording, performed three industrial tasks, with and without the exoskeleton. All tasks were performed in an upright stance involving repetitive upper limbs actions and overhead work, each presenting different physical demands in terms of cycle duration, load handling and percentage of cycle time with shoulder flexion over 80°. The use of ASE consistently lowered muscle activity in the anterior and medial deltoid compared to the free condition (reduction in signal Root Mean Square (RMS) −21.6% and −13.6%, respectively), while no difference was found for the Erector Spinae Longissimus (ESL) muscle. All workers reported complete satisfaction with the ASE effectiveness as rated on Quebec User Evaluation of Satisfaction with Assistive Technology (QUEST), and 62% of the subjects rated the usability score as very high (>80 System Usability Scale (SUS)). The reduction in shoulder flexor muscle activity during the performance of industrial tasks is not correlated to the level of ergonomic risk involved. This preliminary study affirms the potential adoption of ASE as support for repetitive activities in wool textile processing, emphasizing its efficacy in reducing shoulder muscle activity. Positive worker acceptance and intention to use ASE supports its broader adoption as a preventive tool in the occupational sector.

Over recent decades, wearable inertial sensors have become popular means to quantify physical activity and mobility. However, research assessing measurement accuracy and precision is required, especially before using device-based measures as outcomes in trials. The GT9X Link is a recent activity monitor available from ActiGraph, recognized as a “gold standard” and previously used as a criterion measure to assess the validity of various consumer-based activity monitors. However, the validity of the ActiGraph GT9X Link is not fully elucidated. A systematic review was undertaken to synthesize the current evidence for the criterion validity of the ActiGraph GT9X Link in measuring steps and energy expenditure. This review followed the PRISMA guidelines and eight studies were included with a combined sample size of 558 participants. We found that (1) the ActiGraph GT9X Link generally underestimates steps; (2) the validity and accuracy of the device in measuring steps seem to be influenced by gait speed, device placement, filtering process, and monitoring conditions; and (3) there is a lack of evidence regarding the accuracy of step counting in free-living conditions and regarding energy expenditure estimation. Given the limited number of included studies and their heterogeneity, the present review emphasizes the need for further validation studies of the ActiGraph GT9X Link in various populations and in both controlled and free-living settings.

Across five studies, we present the preliminary technical validation of an infant-wearable platform, LittleBeats™, that integrates electrocardiogram (ECG), inertial measurement unit (IMU), and audio sensors. Each sensor modality is validated against data from gold-standard equipment using established algorithms and laboratory tasks. Interbeat interval (IBI) data obtained from the LittleBeats™ ECG sensor indicate acceptable mean absolute percent error rates for both adults (Study 1, N = 16) and infants (Study 2, N = 5) across low- and high-challenge sessions and expected patterns of change in respiratory sinus arrythmia (RSA). For automated activity recognition (upright vs. walk vs. glide vs. squat) using accelerometer data from the LittleBeats™ IMU (Study 3, N = 12 adults), performance was good to excellent, with smartphone (industry standard) data outperforming LittleBeats™ by less than 4 percentage points. Speech emotion recognition (Study 4, N = 8 adults) applied to LittleBeats™ versus smartphone audio data indicated a comparable performance, with no significant difference in error rates. On an automatic speech recognition task (Study 5, N = 12 adults), the best performing algorithm yielded relatively low word error rates, although LittleBeats™ (4.16%) versus smartphone (2.73%) error rates were somewhat higher. Together, these validation studies indicate that LittleBeats™ sensors yield a data quality that is largely comparable to those obtained from gold-standard devices and established protocols used in prior research.

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate progress in textronic UHF RFID transponder (RFIDtex tag) technology. The fundamental idea behind the RFIDtex tag design involves galvanic separation between circuits of the sewn antenna and the chip, which are electromagnetically coupled through a system of inductive loops. To advance the development of this concept, it is crucial to detect factors affecting the performance of the transponders. To achieve this goal, a mathematical model of the textronic UHF RFID transponder was developed. It involves relationships that describe the impedance of each element, the mutual inductance of the loops, and the chip voltage, and it enables the exploration of the influence of these variables on general parameters such as impedance matching and read range. Various analytical and numerical approaches were considered to obtain the value of the mutual inductance of the loops. The dimensions and geometry of the antenna, as well as the matching circuit in the microelectronic module, were taken into account. Based on the mathematical model, it was determined that mutual inductance strongly affects the chip voltage for frequencies higher than 800 MHz. The calculations from the mathematical model were compared with numerical simulations. Experimental studies were also conducted to investigate how the transponder performance is affected by either the distance between the centers of the loops or the conductivity of the threads used to embroider the antenna. The measurement results allowed us to conclude that even small imperfections in the manufacturing of the transponder, which slightly increase the vertical or horizontal distance between the centers of the loops, cause a dramatic decrease in the mutual inductance and coupling coefficient, significantly impacting the transponder’s performance.

Human–robot interaction is of the utmost importance as it enables seamless collaboration and communication between humans and robots, leading to enhanced productivity and efficiency. It involves gathering data from humans, transmitting the data to a robot for execution, and providing feedback to the human. To perform complex tasks, such as robotic grasping and manipulation, which require both human intelligence and robotic capabilities, effective interaction modes are required. To address this issue, we use a wearable glove to collect relevant data from a human demonstrator for improved human–robot interaction. Accelerometer, pressure, and flexi sensors were embedded in the wearable glove to measure motion and force information for handling objects of different sizes, materials, and conditions. A machine learning algorithm is proposed to recognize grasp orientation and position, based on the multi-sensor fusion method.

Wearable technologies have aided in reducing pathological tremor symptoms through non-intrusive solutions that aim to identify patterns in involuntary movements and suppress them using actuators positioned at specific joints. However, during the development of these devices, tests were primarily conducted on patients due to the difficulty of faithfully simulating tremors using simulation equipment. Based on studies characterizing tremors in Parkinson’s disease, the development of a robotic manipulator based on the Stewart platform was initiated, with the goal of satisfactorily simulating resting tremor movements in the hands. In this work, a simulator was implemented in a computational environment using the multibody dynamics method. The platform structure was designed in a virtual environment using SOLIDWORKS® v2017 software and later exported to Matlab® R17a software using the Simulink environment and Simscape multibody library. The workspace was evaluated, and the Kalman filter was used to merge acceleration and angular velocity data and convert them into data related to the inclination and rotation of real patients’ wrists, which were subsequently executed in the simulator. The results show a high correlation and low dispersion between real and simulated signals, demonstrating that the simulated mechanism has the capacity to represent Parkinson’s disease resting tremors in all wrist movements. The system could contribute to conducting tremor tests in suppression devices without the need for the presence of the patient and aid in comparing suppression techniques, benefiting the development of new wearable devices.

Severe visual impairment and blindness significantly affect a person’s quality of life, leading sometimes to social anxiety. Nevertheless, instead of concentrating on a person’s inability, we could focus on their capacities and on their other senses, which in many cases are more developed. On the other hand, the technical evolution that we are witnessing is able to provide practical means that can reduce the effects that blindness and severe visual impairment have on a person’s life. In this context, this article proposes a novel wearable solution that has the potential to significantly improve blind person’s quality of life by providing personal assistance with the help of Visible Light Communications (VLC) technology. To prevent the wearable device from drawing attention and to not further emphasize the user’s deficiency, the prototype has been integrated into a smart backpack that has multiple functions, from localization to obstacle detection. To demonstrate the viability of the concept, the prototype has been evaluated in a complex scenario where it is used to receive the location of a certain object and to safely travel towards it. The experimental results have: i. confirmed the prototype’s ability to receive data at a Bit-Error Rate (BER) lower than 10−7; ii. established the prototype’s ability to provide support for a 3 m radius around a standard 65 × 65 cm luminaire; iii. demonstrated the concept’s compatibility with light dimming in the 1–99% interval while maintaining the low BER; and, most importantly, iv. proved that the use of the concept can enable a person to obtain information and guidance, enabling safer and faster way of traveling to a certain unknown location. As far as we know, this work is the first one to report the implementation and the experimental evaluation of such a concept.

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic resulted in approximately 7 million deaths and impacted 767 million individuals globally, primarily through infections. Acknowledging the impactful influence of sedentary behaviors, particularly exacerbated by COVID-19 restrictions, a substantial body of research has emerged, utilizing wearable sensor technologies to assess these behaviors. This comprehensive review aims to establish a framework encompassing recent studies concerning wearable sensor applications to measure sedentary behavior parameters during the COVID-19 pandemic, spanning December 2019 to December 2022. After examining 582 articles, 7 were selected for inclusion. While most studies displayed effective reporting standards and adept use of wearable device data for their specific research aims, our inquiry revealed deficiencies in apparatus accuracy documentation and study methodology harmonization. Despite methodological variations, diverse metrics, and the absence of thorough device accuracy assessments, integrating wearables within the pandemic context offers a promising avenue for objective measurements and strategies against sedentary behaviors.

Wearable accelerometers allow for continuous monitoring of function and behaviors in the participant’s naturalistic environment. Devices are typically worn in different body locations depending on the concept of interest and endpoint under investigation. The lumbar and wrist are commonly used locations: devices placed at the lumbar region enable the derivation of spatio-temporal characteristics of gait, while wrist-worn devices provide measurements of overall physical activity (PA). Deploying multiple devices in clinical trial settings leads to higher patient burden negatively impacting compliance and data quality and increases the operational complexity of the trial. In this work, we evaluated the joint information shared by features derived from the lumbar and wrist devices to assess whether gait characteristics can be adequately represented by PA measured with wrist-worn devices. Data collected at the Pfizer Innovation Research (PfIRe) Lab were used as a real data example, which had around 7 days of continuous at-home data from wrist- and lumbar-worn devices (GENEActiv) obtained from a group of healthy participants. The relationship between wrist- and lumbar-derived features was estimated using multiple statistical methods, including penalized regression, principal component regression, partial least square regression, and joint and individual variation explained (JIVE). By considering multilevel models, both between- and within-subject effects were taken into account. This work demonstrated that selected gait features, which are typically measured with lumbar-worn devices, can be represented by PA features measured with wrist-worn devices, which provides preliminary evidence to reduce the number of devices needed in clinical trials and to increase patients’ comfort. Moreover, the statistical methods used in this work provided an analytic framework to compare repeated measures collected from multiple data modalities.

Gait abnormalities are common in the elderly and individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s, often leading to reduced mobility and increased fall risk. Monitoring and assessing gait patterns in these populations play a crucial role in understanding disease progression, early detection of motor impairments, and developing personalized rehabilitation strategies. In particular, by identifying gait irregularities at an early stage, healthcare professionals can implement timely interventions and personalized therapeutic approaches, potentially delaying the onset of severe motor symptoms and improving overall patient outcomes. In this paper, we studied older adults affected by chronic diseases and/or Parkinson’s disease by monitoring their gait due to wearable devices that can accurately detect a person’s movements. In our study, about 50 people were involved in the trial (20 with Parkinson’s disease and 30 people with chronic diseases) who have worn our device for at least 6 months. During the experimentation, each device collected 25 samples from the accelerometer sensor for each second. By analyzing those data, we propose a metric for the “gait quality” based on the measure of entropy obtained by applying the Fourier transform.

The main goal of this manuscript is to provide an extensive literature review and analysis of certain biomarkers, which are frequently used to identify stress, anxiety, and other emotions, leading to potential solutions for the monitoring of mental wellness using wearable technologies. It is possible to see the impacts of several biomarkers in detecting stress levels and their effectiveness with an investigation into the literature on this subject. Biofeedback training has demonstrated some psychological effects, such as a reduction in anxiety and self-control enhancement. This survey demonstrates backed up by evidence that wearable devices are assistive in providing health and mental wellness solutions. Because physical activity tracing would reduce the stress stressors, which affect the subject’s body, therefore, it would also affect the mental activity and would lead to a reduction in cognitive mental load.

At present, a medium-level microcontroller is capable of performing edge computing and can handle the computation of neural network kernel functions. This makes it possible to implement a complete end-to-end solution incorporating signal acquisition, digital signal processing, and machine learning for the classification of cardiac arrhythmias on a small wearable device. In this work, we describe the design and implementation of several classifiers for atrial fibrillation detection on a general-purpose ARM Cortex-M4 microcontroller. We used the CMSIS-DSP library, which supports Naïve Bayes and Support Vector Machine classifiers, with different kernel functions. We also developed Python scripts to automatically transfer the Python model (trained in Scikit-learn) to the C environment. To train and evaluate the models, we used part of the data from the PhysioNet/Computing in Cardiology Challenge 2020 and performed simple classification of atrial fibrillation based on heart-rate irregularity. The performance of the classifiers was tested on a general-purpose ARM Cortex-M4 microcontroller (STM32WB55RG). Our study reveals that among the tested classifiers, the SVM classifier with RBF kernel function achieves the highest accuracy of 96.9%, sensitivity of 98.4%, and specificity of 95.8%. The execution time of this classifier was 720 μs per recording. We also discuss the advantages of moving computing tasks to edge devices, including increased power efficiency of the system, improved patient data privacy and security, and reduced overall system operation costs. In addition, we highlight a problem with false-positive detection and unclear significance of device-detected atrial fibrillation.

Wearable devices offer a wealth of data for ubiquitous computing researchers. For instance, sleep data from a wearable could be used to identify an individual’s harmful habits. Recently, devices which are unobtrusive in size, setup, and maintenance are becoming commercially available. However, most data validation for these devices come from brief, short-term laboratory studies or experiments which have unrepresentative samples that are also inaccessible to most researchers. For wearables research conducted in-the-wild, the prospect of running a study has the risk of financial costs and failure. Thus, when researchers conduct in-the-wild studies, the majority of participants tend to be university students. In this paper, we present a month-long in-the-wild study with 31 Japanese adults who wore a sleep tracking device called the Oura ring. The high device usage results found in this study can be used to inform the design and deployment of longer-term mid-size in-the-wild studies.

The ability to accurately measure tibiofemoral angles during various dynamic activities is of clinical interest. The purpose of this study was to determine if inertial measurement units (IMUs) can provide accurate and reliable angle estimates during dynamic actions. A tuned quaternion conversion (TQC) method tuned to dynamics actions was used to calculate Euler angles based on IMU data, and these calculated angles were compared to a motion capture system (our “gold” standard) and a commercially available sensor fusion algorithm. Nine healthy athletes were instrumented with APDM Opal IMUs and asked to perform nine dynamic actions; five participants were used in training the parameters of the TQC method, with the remaining four being used to test validity. Accuracy was based on the root mean square error (RMSE) and reliability was based on the Bland–Altman limits of agreement (LoA). Improvement across all three orthogonal angles was observed as the TQC method was able to more accurately (lower RMSE) and more reliably (smaller LoA) estimate an angle than the commercially available algorithm. No significant difference was observed between the TQC method and the motion capture system in any of the three angles (p < 0.05). It may be feasible to use this method to track tibiofemoral angles with higher accuracy and reliability than the commercially available sensor fusion algorithm.

This paper presents a healthcare information and medical resource management platform utilizing wearable devices, physiological sensors, and an indoor positioning system (IPS). This platform provides medical healthcare information management based on the physiological information collected by wearable devices and Bluetooth data collectors. The Internet of Things (IoT) is constructed for this medical care purpose. The collected data are classified and used to monitor the status of patients in real time with a Secure MQTT mechanism. The measured physiological signals are also used for developing an IPS. When the patient is out of the safety zone, the IPS will send an alert message instantly by pushing the server to remind the caretaker, easing the caretaker’s burden and offering extra protection for the patient. The presented system also provides medical resource management with the help of IPS. The medical equipment and devices can be tracked by IPS to tackle some equipment rental problems, such as lost and found. A platform for the medical staff work coordination information exchange and transmission is also developed to expedite the maintenance of medical equipment, providing the shared medical information to healthcare and management staff in a timely and transparent manner. The presented system in this paper will finally reduce the loading of medical staff during the COVID-19 pandemic period.

Photoplethysmography (PPG) is used to measure blood volume changes in the microvascular bed of tissue. Information about these changes along time can be used for estimation of various physiological parameters, such as heart rate variability, arterial stiffness, and blood pressure, to name a few. As a result, PPG has become a popular biological modality and is widely used in wearable health devices. However, accurate measurement of various physiological parameters requires good-quality PPG signals. Therefore, various signal quality indexes (SQIs) for PPG signals have been proposed. These metrics have usually been based on statistical, frequency, and/or template analyses. The modulation spectrogram representation, however, captures the second-order periodicities of a signal and has been shown to provide useful quality cues for electrocardiograms and speech signals. In this work, we propose a new PPG quality metric based on properties of the modulation spectrum. The proposed metric is tested using data collected from subjects while they performed various activity tasks contaminating the PPG signals. Experiments on this multi-wavelength PPG dataset show the combination of proposed and benchmark measures significantly outperforming several benchmark SQIs with improvements of 21.3% BACC (balanced accuracy) for green, 21.6% BACC for red, and 19.0% BACC for infrared wavelengths, respectively, for PPG quality detection tasks. The proposed metrics also generalize for cross-wavelength PPG quality detection tasks.

Driven by technological advances from Industry 4.0, Healthcare 4.0 synthesizes medical sensors, artificial intelligence (AI), big data, the Internet of things (IoT), machine learning, and augmented reality (AR) to transform the healthcare sector. Healthcare 4.0 creates a smart health network by connecting patients, medical devices, hospitals, clinics, medical suppliers, and other healthcare-related components. Body chemical sensor and biosensor networks (BSNs) provide the necessary platform for Healthcare 4.0 to collect various medical data from patients. BSN is the foundation of Healthcare 4.0 in raw data detection and information collecting. This paper proposes a BSN architecture with chemical sensors and biosensors to detect and communicate physiological measurements of human bodies. These measurement data help healthcare professionals to monitor patient vital signs and other medical conditions. The collected data facilitates disease diagnosis and injury detection at an early stage. Our work further formulates the problem of sensor deployment in BSNs as a mathematical model. This model includes parameter and constraint sets to describe patient body characteristics, BSN sensor features, as well as biomedical readout requirements. The proposed model’s performance is evaluated by multiple sets of simulations on different parts of the human body. Simulations are designed to represent typical BSN applications in Healthcare 4.0. Simulation results demonstrate the impact of various biofactors and measurement time on sensor selections and readout performance.

Cardiovascular diseases kill 18 million people each year. Currently, a patient’s health is assessed only during clinical visits, which are often infrequent and provide little information on the person’s health during daily life. Advances in mobile health technologies have allowed for the continuous monitoring of indicators of health and mobility during daily life by wearable and other devices. The ability to obtain such longitudinal, clinically relevant measurements could enhance the prevention, detection and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. This review discusses the advantages and disadvantages of various methods for monitoring patients with cardiovascular disease during daily life using wearable devices. We specifically discuss three distinct monitoring domains: physical activity monitoring, indoor home monitoring and physiological parameter monitoring.

Sudden cardiac death is a sudden and highly fatal condition. Implementing high-quality emergency cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) early on is an effective rescue method for this disease. However, the rescue steps of CPR are complicated and difficult to remember, and the quantitative indicators are difficult to control, which leads to a poor quality of CPR emergency actions outside the hospital setting. Therefore, we have developed CPR emergency equipment with a multisensory feedback function, aiming to guide rescuers in performing CPR through visual, auditory, and tactile interaction. This equipment consists of three components: first aid clothing, an audio-visual integrated terminal, and a vital sign detector. These three components are based on a micro-power WiFi-Mesh network, enabling the long-term wireless transmission of the multisensor data. To evaluate the impact of the multisensory feedback CPR emergency equipment on nonprofessionals, we conducted a controlled experiment involving 32 nonmedical subjects. Each subject was assigned to either the experimental group, which used the equipment, or the control group, which did not. The main evaluation criteria were the chest compression (CC) depth, the CC rate, the precise depth of the CC ratio (5–6 cm), and the precise rate of the CC ratio -(100–120 times/min). The results indicated that the average CC depth in the experimental group was 51.5 ± 1.3 mm, which was significantly better than that of the control group (50.2 ± 2.2 mm, p = 0.012). Moreover, the average CC rate in the experimental group (110.1 ± 6.2 times/min) was significantly higher than that of the control group (100.4 ± 6.6 times/min) (p < 0.001). Compared to the control group (66.37%), the experimental group showed a higher proportion of precise CC depth (82.11%), which is closer to the standard CPR rate of 100%. In addition, the CC ratio of the precise rate was 93.75% in the experimental group, which was significantly better than that of 56.52% in the control group (p = 0.024). Following the experiment, the revised System Availability Scale (SUS) was utilized to evaluate the equipment’s usability. The average total SUS score was 78.594, indicating that the equipment’s acceptability range was evaluated as ‘acceptable’, and the overall adjective rating was ‘good’. In conclusion, the multisensory feedback CPR emergency equipment significantly enhances the CC performance (CC depth, CC rate, the precise depth of CC ratio, the precise rate of CC ratio) of nonprofessionals during CPR, and the majority of participants perceive the equipment as being easy to use.

Glucose monitoring is key to the management of diabetes mellitus to maintain optimal glucose control whilst avoiding hypoglycemia. Non-invasive continuous glucose monitoring techniques have evolved considerably to replace finger prick testing, but still require sensor insertion. Physiological variables, such as heart rate and pulse pressure, change with blood glucose, especially during hypoglycemia, and could be used to predict hypoglycemia. To validate this approach, clinical studies that contemporaneously acquire physiological and continuous glucose variables are required. In this work, we provide insights from a clinical study undertaken to study the relationship between physiological variables obtained from a number of wearables and glucose levels. The clinical study included three screening tests to assess neuropathy and acquired data using wearable devices from 60 participants for four days. We highlight the challenges and provide recommendations to mitigate issues that may impact the validity of data capture to enable a valid interpretation of the outcomes.

The majority of car accidents worldwide are caused by drowsy drivers. Therefore, it is important to be able to detect when a driver is starting to feel drowsy in order to warn them before a serious accident occurs. Sometimes, drivers are not aware of their own drowsiness, but changes in their body signals can indicate that they are getting tired. Previous studies have used large and intrusive sensor systems that can be worn by the driver or placed in the vehicle to collect information about the driver’s physical status from a variety of signals that are either physiological or vehicle-related. This study focuses on the use of a single wrist device that is comfortable for the driver to wear and appropriate signal processing to detect drowsiness by analyzing only the physiological skin conductance (SC) signal. To determine whether the driver is drowsy, the study tests three ensemble algorithms and finds that the Boosting algorithm is the most effective in detecting drowsiness with an accuracy of 89.4%. The results of this study show that it is possible to identify when a driver is drowsy using only signals from the skin on the wrist, and this encourages further research to develop a real-time warning system for early detection of drowsiness.

Bladder monitoring, including urinary incontinence management and bladder urinary volume monitoring, is a vital part of urological care. Urinary incontinence is a common medical condition affecting the quality of life of more than 420 million people worldwide, and bladder urinary volume is an important indicator to evaluate the function and health of the bladder. Previous studies on non-invasive techniques for urinary incontinence management technology, bladder activity and bladder urine volume monitoring have been conducted. This scoping review outlines the prevalence of bladder monitoring with a focus on recent developments in smart incontinence care wearable devices and the latest technologies for non-invasive bladder urine volume monitoring using ultrasound, optical and electrical bioimpedance techniques. The results found are promising and their application will improve the well-being of the population suffering from neurogenic dysfunction of the bladder and the management of urinary incontinence. The latest research advances in bladder urinary volume monitoring and urinary incontinence management have significantly improved existing market products and solutions and will enable the development of more effective future solutions.

In recent decades, the automatic recognition and interpretation of brain waves acquired by electroencephalographic (EEG) technologies have undergone remarkable growth, leading to a consequent rapid development of brain–computer interfaces (BCIs). EEG-based BCIs are non-invasive systems that allow communication between a human being and an external device interpreting brain activity directly. Thanks to the advances in neurotechnologies, and especially in the field of wearable devices, BCIs are now also employed outside medical and clinical applications. Within this context, this paper proposes a systematic review of EEG-based BCIs, focusing on one of the most promising paradigms based on motor imagery (MI) and limiting the analysis to applications that adopt wearable devices. This review aims to evaluate the maturity levels of these systems, both from the technological and computational points of view. The selection of papers has been performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), leading to 84 publications considered in the last ten years (from 2012 to 2022). Besides technological and computational aspects, this review also aims to systematically list experimental paradigms and available datasets in order to identify benchmarks and guidelines for the development of new applications and computational models.

Haptic devices transmit information to the user, using tactile stimuli to augment or replace sensory input. People with limited sensory abilities, such as vision or hearing can receive supplementary information by relying on them. This review analyses recent developments in haptic devices for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals by extracting the most relevant information from each of the selected papers. The process of finding relevant literature is detailed using the PRISMA guidelines for literature reviews. In this review, the devices are categorized to better understand the review topic. The categorization results have highlighted several areas of future research into haptic devices for hearing-impaired users. We believe this review may be useful to researchers interested in haptic devices, assistive technologies, and human–computer interaction.

Exoskeletons are a promising tool to support individuals with a decreased level of motor performance. Due to their built-in sensors, exoskeletons offer the possibility of continuously recording and assessing user data, for example, related to motor performance. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of studies that rely on using exoskeletons to measure motor performance. Therefore, we conducted a systematic literature review, following the PRISMA Statement guidelines. A total of 49 studies using lower limb exoskeletons for the assessment of human motor performance were included. Of these, 19 studies were validity studies, and six were reliability studies. We found 33 different exoskeletons; seven can be considered stationary, and 26 were mobile exoskeletons. The majority of the studies measured parameters such as range of motion, muscle strength, gait parameters, spasticity, and proprioception. We conclude that exoskeletons can be used to measure a wide range of motor performance parameters through built-in sensors, and seem to be more objective and specific than manual test procedures. However, since these parameters are usually estimated from built-in sensor data, the quality and specificity of an exoskeleton to assess certain motor performance parameters must be examined before an exoskeleton can be used, for example, in a research or clinical setting.
