Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an important analysis technique with applications in many industrial branches and fields of scientific research. Nowadays, the advantages of LIBS are impaired by the main drawback in the interpretation of obtained spectra and identification of observed spectral lines. This procedure is highly time-consuming since it is essentially based on the comparison of lines present in the spectrum with the literature database. This paper proposes the use of various computational intelligence methods to develop a reliable and fast classification of quasi-destructively acquired LIBS spectra into a set of predefined classes. We focus on a specific problem of classification of paper-ink samples into 30 separate, predefined classes. For each of 30 classes (10 pens of each of 5 ink types combined with 10 sheets of 5 paper types plus empty pages), 100 LIBS spectra are collected. Four variants of preprocessing, seven classifiers (decision trees, random forest, k-nearest neighbor, support vector machine, probabilistic neural network, multi-layer perceptron, and generalized regression neural network), 5-fold stratified cross-validation, and a test on an independent set (for methods evaluation) scenarios are employed. Our developed system yielded an accuracy of 99.08%, obtained using the random forest classifier. Fine classification of urban nighttime lighting is a key prerequisite step for small-scale nighttime urban research. In order to fill the gap of high-resolution urban nighttime light image classification and recognition research, this paper is based on a small rotary-wing UAV platform, taking the nighttime static monocular tilted light images of communities near Meixi Lake in Changsha City as research data. Using an object-oriented classification method to fully extract the spectral, textural and geometric features of urban nighttime lights, we build four types of classification models based on random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbor (KNN) and decision tree (DT), respectively, to finely extract five types of nighttime lights: window light, neon light, road reflective light, building reflective light and background. The main conclusions are as follows: (i) The equal division of the image into three regions according to the visual direction can alleviate the variable scale problem of monocular tilted images, and the multiresolution segmentation results combined with Canny edge detection are more suitable for urban nighttime lighting images; (ii) RF has the highest classification accuracy among the four classification algorithms, with an overall classification accuracy of 95.36% and a kappa coefficient of 0.9381 in the far view region, followed by SVM, KNN and DT as the worst; (iii) Among the fine classification results of urban light types, window light and background have the highest classification accuracy, with both UA and PA above 93% in the RF classification model, while road reflective light has the lowest accuracy; (iv) Among the selected classification features, the spectral features have the highest contribution rates, which are above 59% in all three regions, followed by the textural features and the geometric features with the smallest contribution rates. Rice is a staple food that feeds nearly half of the world's population. With the population of our planet expected to keep growing, it is crucial to carry out accurate mapping, monitoring, and assessments since these could significantly impact food security, climate change, spatial planning, and land management. Using the PRISMA systematic review protocol, this article identified and selected 122 scientific articles (journals papers and conference proceedings) addressing different remote sensing-based methodologies to map paddy croplands, published between 2010 and October 2022. This analysis includes full coverage of the mapping of rice paddies and their various stages of crop maturity. This review paper classifies the methods based on the data source: (a) multispectral (62%), (b) multisource (20%), and (c) radar (18%). Furthermore, it analyses the impact of machine learning on those methodologies and the most common algorithms used. We found that MODIS (28%), Sentinel-2 (18%), Sentinel-1 (15%), and Landsat-8 (11%) were the most used sensors. The impact of Sentinel-1 on multisource solutions is also increasing due to the potential of backscatter information to determine textures in different stages and decrease cloud cover constraints. The preferred solutions include phenology algorithms via the use of vegetation indices, setting thresholds, or applying machine learning algorithms to classify images. In terms of machine learning algorithms, random forest is the most used (17 times), followed by support vector machine (12 times) and isodata (7 times). With the continuous development of technology and computing, it is expected that solutions such as multisource solutions will emerge more frequently and cover larger areas in different locations and at a higher resolution. The problem of Power Quality analysis is becoming crucial to ensuring the proper functioning of complex systems and big plants. In this regard, it is essential to rapidly detect anomalies in voltage and current signals to ensure a prompt response and maximize the system's availability with the minimum maintenance cost. In this paper, anomaly detection algorithms based on machine learning, such as One Class Support Vector Machine (OCSVM), Isolation Forest (IF), and Angle-Based Outlier Detection (ABOD), are used as a first tool for rapid and effective clustering of the measured voltage and current signals directly on-line on the sensing unit. If the proposed anomaly detection algorithm detects an anomaly, further investigations using suitable classification algorithms are required. The main advantage of the proposed solution is the ability to rapidly and efficiently detect different types of anomalies with low computational complexity, allowing the implementation of the algorithm directly on the sensor node used for signal acquisition. A suitable experimental platform has been established to evaluate the advantages of the proposed method. All the different models were tested using a consistent set of hyperparameters and an output dataset generated from the principal component analysis technique. The assessment of the cognitive workload experienced by air traffic controllers is a complex and prominent issue in the research community. This study introduces new indicators related to gamma waves to detect controllers' workload and develops experimental protocols to capture their EEG data and NASA-TXL data. Then, statistical tests, including the Shapiro–Wilk test and ANOVA, were used to verify whether there was a significant difference between the workload data of the controllers in different scenarios. Furthermore, the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier was employed to assess the detection accuracy of these indicators across four categorizations. According to the outcomes, hypotheses suggesting a strong correlation between gamma waves and an air traffic controller's workload were put forward and subsequently verified; meanwhile, compared with traditional indicators, the indicators associated with gamma waves proposed in this paper have higher accuracy. In addition, to explore the applicability of the indicator, sensitive channels were selected based on the mRMR algorithm for the indicator with the highest accuracy, β + θ + α + γ, showcasing a recognition rate of a single channel exceeding 95% of the full channel, which meets the requirements of convenience and accuracy in practical applications. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that utilizing EEG gamma wave-associated indicators can offer valuable insights into analyzing workload levels among air traffic controllers. Surgery is a common first-line treatment for many types of disease, including cancer. Mortality rates after general elective surgery have seen significant decreases whilst postoperative complications remain a frequent occurrence. Preoperative assessment tools are used to support patient risk stratification but do not always provide a precise and accessible assessment. Wearable sensors (WS) provide an accessible alternative that offers continuous monitoring in a non-clinical setting. They have shown consistent uptake across the perioperative period but there has been no review of WS as a preoperative assessment tool. This paper reviews the developments in WS research that have application to the preoperative period. Accelerometers were consistently employed as sensors in research and were frequently combined with photoplethysmography or electrocardiography sensors. Pre-processing methods were discussed and missing data was a common theme; this was dealt with in several ways, commonly by employing an extraction threshold or using imputation techniques. Research rarely processed raw data; commercial devices that employ internal proprietary algorithms with pre-calculated heart rate and step count were most commonly employed limiting further feature extraction. A range of machine learning models were used to predict outcomes including support vector machines, random forests and regression models. No individual model clearly outperformed others. Deep learning proved successful for predicting exercise testing outcomes but only within large sample-size studies. Machine learning, powered by cloud servers, has found application in medical diagnosis, enhancing the capabilities of smart healthcare services. Research literature demonstrates that the support vector machine (SVM) consistently demonstrates remarkable accuracy in medical diagnosis. Nonetheless, safeguarding patients' health data privacy and preserving the intellectual property of diagnosis models is of paramount importance. This concern arises from the common practice of outsourcing these models to third-party cloud servers that may not be entirely trustworthy. Few studies in the literature have delved into addressing these issues within SVM-based diagnosis systems. These studies, however, typically demand substantial communication and computational resources and may fail to conceal classification results and protect model intellectual property. This paper aims to tackle these limitations within a multi-class SVM medical diagnosis system. To achieve this, we have introduced modifications to an inner product encryption cryptosystem and incorporated it into our medical diagnosis framework. Notably, our cryptosystem proves to be more efficient than the Paillier and multi-party computation cryptography methods employed in previous research. Although we focus on a medical application in this paper, our approach can also be used for other applications that need the evaluation of machine learning models in a privacy-preserving way such as electricity theft detection in the smart grid, electric vehicle charging coordination, and vehicular social networks. To assess the performance and security of our approach, we conducted comprehensive analyses and experiments. Our findings demonstrate that our proposed method successfully fulfills our security and privacy objectives while maintaining high classification accuracy and minimizing communication and computational overhead. Internet of Things (IoT) devices are leading to advancements in innovation, efficiency, and sustainability across various industries. However, as the number of connected IoT devices increases, the risk of intrusion becomes a major concern in IoT security. To prevent intrusions, it is crucial to implement intrusion detection systems (IDSs) that can detect and prevent such attacks. IDSs are a critical component of cybersecurity infrastructure. They are designed to detect and respond to malicious activities within a network or system. Traditional IDS methods rely on predefined signatures or rules to identify known threats, but these techniques may struggle to detect novel or sophisticated attacks. The implementation of IDSs with machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques has been proposed to improve IDSs' ability to detect attacks. This will enhance overall cybersecurity posture and resilience. However, ML and DL techniques face several issues that may impact the models' performance and effectiveness, such as overfitting and the effects of unimportant features on finding meaningful patterns. To ensure better performance and reliability of machine learning models in IDSs when dealing with new and unseen threats, the models need to be optimized. This can be done by addressing overfitting and implementing feature selection. In this paper, we propose a scheme to optimize IoT intrusion detection by using class balancing and feature selection for preprocessing. We evaluated the experiment on the UNSW-NB15 dataset and the NSL-KD dataset by implementing two different ensemble models: one using a support vector machine (SVM) with bagging and another using long short-term memory (LSTM) with stacking. The results of the performance and the confusion matrix show that the LSTM stacking with analysis of variance (ANOVA) feature selection model is a superior model for classifying network attacks. It has remarkable accuracies of 96.92 % and 99.77 % and overfitting values of 0.33 % and 0.04 % on the two datasets, respectively. The current paper presents helical gearbox defect detection models built from raw vibration signals measured using a triaxial accelerometer. Gear faults, such as localized pitting, localized wear on helical pinion tooth flanks, and low lubricant level, are under observation for three rotating velocities of the actuator and three load levels at the speed reducer output. The emphasis is on the strong connection between the gear faults and the fundamental meshing frequency GMF, its harmonics, and the sidebands found in the vibration spectrum as an effect of the amplitude modulation (AM) and phase modulation (PM). Several sets of features representing powers on selected frequency bands or/and associated peak amplitudes from the vibration spectrum, and also, for comparison, time-domain and frequency-domain statistical feature sets, are proposed as predictors in the defect detection task. The best performing detection model, with a testing accuracy of 99.73%, is based on SVM (Support Vector Machine) with a cubic kernel, and the features used are the band powers associated with six GMF harmonics and two sideband pairs for all three accelerometer axes, regardless of the rotation velocities and the load levels. Finding ways to enable seamless communication between deaf and able-bodied individuals has been a challenging and pressing issue. This paper proposes a solution to this problem by designing a low-cost data glove that utilizes multiple inertial sensors with the purpose of achieving efficient and accurate sign language recognition. In this study, four machine learning models—decision tree (DT), support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbor method (KNN), and random forest (RF)—were employed to recognize 20 different types of dynamic sign language data used by deaf individuals. Additionally, a proposed attention-based mechanism of long and short-term memory neural networks (Attention-BiLSTM) was utilized in the process. Furthermore, this study verifies the impact of the number and position of data glove nodes on the accuracy of recognizing complex dynamic sign language. Finally, the proposed method is compared with existing state-of-the-art algorithms using nine public datasets. The results indicate that both the Attention-BiLSTM and RF algorithms have the highest performance in recognizing the twenty dynamic sign language gestures, with an accuracy of 98.85% and 97.58%, respectively. This provides evidence for the feasibility of our proposed data glove and recognition methods. This study may serve as a valuable reference for the development of wearable sign language recognition devices and promote easier communication between deaf and able-bodied individuals. Ultrasonic diagnostics is the earliest way to predict industrial faults. Usually, a contact microphone is employed for detection, but the recording will be contaminated with noise. In this paper, a dataset that contains 10 main faults of pipelines and motors is analyzed from which 30 different features in the time and frequency domains are extracted. Afterward, for dimensionality reduction, principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) are performed. In the subsequent phase, recursive feature elimination (RFE) is employed as a strategic method to analyze and select the most relevant features for the classifiers. Next, predictive models consisting of k-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Logistic Regression (LR), Decision Tree (DT), Gaussian Naive Bayes (GNB), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) are employed. Then, in order to solve the classification problem, a stacking classifier based on a meta-classifier which combines multiple classification models is introduced. Furthermore, the k-fold cross-validation technique is employed to assess the effectiveness of the model in handling new data for the evaluation of experimental results in ultrasonic fault detection. With the proposed method, the accuracy is around 5% higher over five cross folds with the least amount of variation. The timing evaluation of the meta model on the 64 MHz Cortex M4 microcontroller unit (MCU) revealed an execution time of 11 ms, indicating it could be a promising solution for real-time monitoring. Mobile fitness applications provide the opportunity to show users real-time feedback on their current fitness activity. For such applications, it is essential to accurately track the user's current fitness activity using available mobile sensors, such as inertial measurement units (IMUs). Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been shown to produce strong results in different time series classification tasks, including the recognition of daily living activities. However, fitness activities can present unique challenges to the human activity recognition task (HAR), including greater similarity between individual activities and fewer available data for model training. In this paper, we evaluate the applicability of CNNs to the fitness activity recognition task (FAR) using IMU data and determine the impact of input data size and sensor count on performance. For this purpose, we adapted three existing CNN architectures to the FAR task and designed a fourth CNN variant, which we call the scaling fully convolutional network (Scaling-FCN). We designed a preprocessing pipeline and recorded a running exercise data set with 20 participants, in which we evaluated the respective recognition performances of the four networks, comparing them with three traditional machine learning (ML) methods commonly used in HAR. Although CNN architectures achieve at least 94% test accuracy in all scenarios, two traditional ML architectures surpass them in the default scenario, with support vector machines (SVMs) achieving 99.00 ± 0.34% test accuracy. The removal of all sensors except one foot sensor reduced the performance of traditional ML architectures but improved the performance of CNN architectures on our data set, with our Scaling-FCN reaching the highest accuracy of 99.86 ± 0.11% on the test set. Our results suggest that CNNs are generally well suited for fitness activity recognition, and noticeable performance improvements can be achieved if sensors are dropped selectively, although traditional ML architectures can still compete with or even surpass CNNs when favorable input data are utilized. Parkinson's disease (PD) has become widespread these days all over the world. PD affects the nervous system of the human and also affects a lot of human body parts that are connected via nerves. In order to make a classification for people who suffer from PD and who do not suffer from the disease, an advanced model called Bayesian Optimization-Support Vector Machine (BO-SVM) is presented in this paper for making the classification process. Bayesian Optimization (BO) is a hyperparameter tuning technique for optimizing the hyperparameters of machine learning models in order to obtain better accuracy. In this paper, BO is used to optimize the hyperparameters for six machine learning models, namely, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), Logistic Regression (LR), Naive Bayes (NB), Ridge Classifier (RC), and Decision Tree (DT). The dataset used in this study consists of 23 features and 195 instances. The class label of the target feature is 1 and 0, where 1 refers to the person suffering from PD and 0 refers to the person who does not suffer from PD. Four evaluation metrics, namely, accuracy, F1-score, recall, and precision were computed to evaluate the performance of the classification models used in this paper. The performance of the six machine learning models was tested on the dataset before and after the process of hyperparameter tuning. The experimental results demonstrated that the SVM model achieved the best results when compared with other machine learning models before and after the process of hyperparameter tuning, with an accuracy of 92.3% obtained using BO. LoRaWAN networks rely heavily on the adaptive data rate algorithm to achieve good link reliability and to support the required density of end devices. However, to be effective the adaptive data rate algorithm needs to be tuned according to the level of mobility of each end device. For that purpose, different adaptive data rate algorithms have been developed for the different levels of mobility of end devices, e.g., for static or mobile end devices. In this paper, we describe and evaluate a new and effective method for determining the level of mobility of end devices based on machine learning techniques and specifically on the support vector machine supervised learning method. The proposed method does not rely on the location capability of LoRaWAN networks; instead, it relies only on data always available at the LoRaWAN network server. Moreover, the performance of this method in a real LoRaWAN network is assessed; the results give clear evidence of the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed machine learning approach. Missing insulator caps are the key focus of transmission line inspection work. Insulators with a missing cap will experience decreased insulation and mechanical strength and cause transmission line safety accidents. As missing insulator caps often occur in glass and porcelain insulators, this paper proposes a detection method for missing insulator caps in these materials. First, according to the grayscale and color characteristics of these insulators, similar characteristic regions of the insulators are extracted from inspection images, and candidate boxes are generated based on these characteristic regions. Second, the images captured by these boxes are input into the classifier composed of SVM (Support Vector Machine) to identify and locate the insulators. The accuracy, recall and average accuracy of the classifier are all higher than 90%. Finally, this paper proposes a processing method based on the insulator morphology to determine whether an insulator cap is missing. Cognitive radio networks are vulnerable to numerous threats during spectrum sensing. Different approaches can be used to lessen these attacks as the malicious users degrade the performance of the network. The cutting-edge technologies of machine learning and deep learning step into cognitive radio networks (CRN) to detect network problems. Several studies have been conducted utilising various deep learning and machine learning methods. However, only a small number of analyses have used gated recurrent units (GRU), and that too in software defined networks, but these are seldom used in CRN. In this paper, we used GRU in CRN to train and test the dataset of spectrum sensing results. One of the deep learning models with less complexity and more effectiveness for small datasets is GRU, the lightest variant of the LSTM. The support vector machine (SVM) classifier is employed in this study's output layer to distinguish between authorised users and malicious users in cognitive radio network. The novelty of this paper is the application of combined models of GRU and SVM in cognitive radio networks. Human-to-human communication via the computer is mainly carried out using a keyboard or microphone. In the field of virtual reality (VR), where the most immersive experience possible is desired, the use of a keyboard contradicts this goal, while the use of a microphone is not always desirable (e.g., silent commands during task-force training) or simply not possible (e.g., if the user has hearing loss). Data gloves help to increase immersion within VR, as they correspond to our natural interaction. At the same time, they offer the possibility of accurately capturing hand shapes, such as those used in non-verbal communication (e.g., thumbs up, okay gesture, ...) and in sign language. In this paper, we present a hand-shape recognition system using Manus Prime X data gloves, including data acquisition, data preprocessing, and data classification to enable nonverbal communication within VR. We investigate the impact on accuracy and classification time of using an outlier detection and a feature selection approach in our data preprocessing. To obtain a more generalized approach, we also studied the impact of artificial data augmentation, i.e., we created new artificial data from the recorded and filtered data to augment the training data set. With our approach, 56 different hand shapes could be distinguished with an accuracy of up to 93.28%. With a reduced number of 27 hand shapes, an accuracy of up to 95.55% could be achieved. The voting meta-classifier (VL2) proved to be the most accurate, albeit slowest, classifier. A good alternative is random forest (RF), which was even able to achieve better accuracy values in a few cases and was generally somewhat faster. outlier detection was proven to be an effective approach, especially in improving the classification time. In the food industry, quality and safety issues are associated with consumers' health condition. There is a growing interest in applying various noninvasive sensorial techniques to obtain quickly quality attributes. One of them, hyperspectral/multispectral imaging technique has been extensively used for inspection of various food products. In this paper, a stacking-based ensemble prediction system has been developed for the prediction of total viable counts of microorganisms in beef fillet samples, an essential cause to meat spoilage, utilizing multispectral imaging information. As the selection of important wavelengths from the multispectral imaging system is considered as an essential stage to the prediction scheme, a features fusion approach has been also explored, by combining wavelengths extracted from various feature selection techniques. Ensemble sub-components include two advanced clustering-based neuro-fuzzy network prediction models, one utilizing information from average reflectance values, while the other one from the standard deviation of the pixels' intensity per wavelength. The performances of neurofuzzy models were compared against established regression algorithms such as multilayer perceptron, support vector machines and partial least squares. Obtained results confirmed the validity of the proposed hypothesis to utilize a combination of feature selection methods with neurofuzzy models in order to assess the microbiological quality of meat products. To adapt vehicle control and plan strategies in a predictive manner, it is usually desired to know the context of a driving environment. This paper aims at efficiently inferring the following five driving environments around vehicle's vicinity: shopping zone, tourist zone, public station, motor service area, and security zone, whose existences are not necessarily mutually exclusive. To achieve that, we utilize the Point of Interest (POI) data from a navigation map as the semantic clue, and solve the inference task as a multilabel classification problem. Specifically, we first extract all relevant POI objects from a map, then transform these discrete POI objects into numerical POI features. Based on these POI features, we finally predict the occurrence of each driving environment via an inference engine. To calculate representative POI features, a statistical approach is introduced. To composite an inference engine, three inference systems are investigated: fuzzy inference system (FIS), support vector machine (SVM), and multilayer perceptron (MLP). In total, we implement 11 variants of inference engine following two inference strategies: independent and unified inference strategies, and conduct comprehensive evaluation on a manually collected dataset. The result shows that the proposed inference framework generalizes well on different inference systems, where the best overall F 1 score 0.8699 is achieved by the MLP-based inference engine following the unified inference strategy, along with the fastest inference time of 0.0002 millisecond per sample. For permanent magnet DC motors (PMDCMs), the amplitude of the current signals gradually decreases after the motor starts. In this work, the time domain features and time-frequency-domain features extracted from several successive segments of current signals make up a feature vector, which is adopted for fault diagnosis of PMDCMs. Many redundant features will lead to a decrease in diagnosis efficiency and increase the computation cost, so it is necessary to eliminate redundant features and features that have negative effects. This paper presents a novel supervised filter feature selection method for reducing data dimension by employing the Gaussian probability density function (GPDF) and named Gaussian vote feature selection (GVFS). To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed GVFS, we compared it with the other five filter feature selection methods by utilizing the PMDCM's data. Additionally, Gaussian naive Bayes (GNB), k -nearest neighbor algorithm (k -NN), and support vector machine (SVM) are utilized for the construction of fault diagnosis models. Experimental results show that the proposed GVFS has a better diagnostic effect than the other five feature selection methods, and the average accuracy of fault diagnosis improves from 97.89% to 99.44%. A high cognitive load can overload a person, potentially resulting in catastrophic accidents. It is therefore important to ensure the level of cognitive load associated with safety-critical tasks (such as driving a vehicle) remains manageable for drivers, enabling them to respond appropriately to changes in the driving environment. Although electroencephalography (EEG) has attracted significant interest in cognitive load research, few studies have used EEG to investigate cognitive load in the context of driving. This paper presents a feasibility study on the simulation of various levels of cognitive load through designing and implementing four driving tasks. We employ machine learning-based classification techniques using EEG recordings to differentiate driving conditions. An EEG dataset containing these four driving tasks from a group of 20 participants was collected to investigate whether EEG can be used as an indicator of changes in cognitive load. The collected dataset was used to train four Deep Neural Networks and four Support Vector Machine classification models. The results showed that the best model achieved a classification accuracy of 90.37%, utilising statistical features from multiple frequency bands in 24 EEG channels. Furthermore, the Gamma and Beta bands achieved higher classification accuracy than the Alpha and Theta bands during the analysis. The wheels of railway vehicles are of paramount importance in relation to railroad operations and safety. Currently, the management of railway vehicle wheels is restricted to post-event inspections of the wheels whenever physical phenomena, such as abnormal vibrations and noise, occur during the operation of railway vehicles. To address this issue, this paper proposes a method for predicting abnormalities in railway wheels in advance and enhancing the learning and prediction performance of machine learning algorithms. Data were collected during the operation of Line 4 of the Busan Metro in South Korea by directly attaching sensors to the railway vehicles. Through the analysis of key factors in the collected data, factors that can be used for tire condition classification were derived. Additionally, through data distribution analysis and correlation analysis, factors for classifying tire conditions were identified. As a result, it was determined that the z-axis of acceleration has a significant impact, and machine learning techniques such as SVM (Linear Kernel, RBF Kernel) and Random Forest were utilized based on acceleration data to classify tire conditions into in-service and defective states. The significant surge in Internet of Things (IoT) devices presents substantial challenges to network security. Hackers are afforded a larger attack surface to exploit as more devices become interconnected. Furthermore, the sheer volume of data these devices generate can overwhelm conventional security systems, compromising their detection capabilities. To address these challenges posed by the increasing number of interconnected IoT devices and the data overload they generate, this paper presents an approach based on meta-learning principles to identify attacks within IoT networks. The proposed approach constructs a meta-learner model by stacking the predictions of three Deep-Learning (DL) models: RNN, LSTM, and CNN. Subsequently, the identification by the meta-learner relies on various methods, namely Logistic Regression (LR), Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). To assess the effectiveness of this approach, extensive evaluations are conducted using the IoT dataset from 2020. The XGBoost model showcased outstanding performance, achieving the highest accuracy (98.75%), precision (98.30%), F1-measure (98.53%), and AUC-ROC (98.75%). A global health emergency resulted from the COVID-19 epidemic. Image recognition techniques are a useful tool for limiting the spread of the pandemic; indeed, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the use of face masks in public places as a form of protection against contagion. Hence, innovative systems and algorithms were deployed to rapidly screen a large number of people with faces covered by masks. In this article, we analyze the current state of research and future directions in algorithms and systems for masked-face recognition. First, the paper discusses the importance and applications of facial and face mask recognition, introducing the main approaches. Afterward, we review the recent facial recognition frameworks and systems based on Convolution Neural Networks, deep learning, machine learning, and MobilNet techniques. In detail, we analyze and critically discuss recent scientific works and systems which employ machine learning (ML) and deep learning tools for promptly recognizing masked faces. Also, Internet of Things (IoT)-based sensors, implementing ML and DL algorithms, were described to keep track of the number of persons donning face masks and notify the proper authorities. Afterward, the main challenges and open issues that should be solved in future studies and systems are discussed. Handwritten Arabic character recognition has received increasing research interest in recent years. However, as of yet, the majority of the existing handwriting recognition systems have only focused on adult handwriting. In contrast, there have not been many studies conducted on child handwriting, nor has it been regarded as a major research issue yet. Compared to adults' handwriting, children's handwriting is more challenging since it often has lower quality, higher variation, and larger distortions. Furthermore, most of these designed and currently used systems for adult data have not been trained or tested for child data recognition purposes or applications. This paper presents a new convolution neural network (CNN) model for recognizing children's handwritten isolated Arabic letters. Several experiments are conducted here to investigate and analyze the influence when training the model with different datasets of children, adults, and both to measure and compare performance in recognizing children's handwritten characters and discriminating their handwriting from adult handwriting. In addition, a number of supplementary features are proposed based on empirical study and observations and are combined with CNN-extracted features to augment the child and adult writer-group classification. Lastly, the performance of the extracted deep and supplementary features is evaluated and compared using different classifiers, comprising Softmax, support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), and random forest (RF), as well as different dataset combinations from Hijja for child data and AHCD for adult data. Our findings highlight that the training strategy is crucial, and the inclusion of adult data is influential in achieving an increased accuracy of up to around 93% in child handwritten character recognition. Considering the detrimental effects of dyslexia on academic performance and its common occurrence, developing tools for dyslexia detection, monitoring, and treatment poses a task of significant priority. The research performed in this paper was focused on detecting and analyzing dyslexic tendencies in Serbian children based on eye-tracking measures. The group of 30 children (ages 7–13, 15 dyslexic and 15 non-dyslexic) read 13 different text segments on 13 different color configurations. For each text segment, the corresponding eye-tracking trail was recorded and then processed offline and represented by nine conventional features and five newly proposed features. The features were used for dyslexia recognition using several machine learning algorithms: logistic regression, support vector machine, k-nearest neighbor, and random forest. The highest accuracy of 94% was achieved using all the implemented features and leave-one-out subject cross-validation. Afterwards, the most important features for dyslexia detection (representing the complexity of fixation gaze) were used in a statistical analysis of the individual color effects on dyslexic tendencies within the dyslexic group. The statistical analysis has shown that the influence of color has high inter-subject variability. This paper is the first to introduce features that provide clear separability between a dyslexic and control group in the Serbian language (a language with a shallow orthographic system). Defective wheels pose a significant challenge in railway transportation, impacting operational performance and safety. Excessive traction and braking forces give rise to deviations from the intended conical tread shape, resulting in amplified vibrations and noise. Moreover, these deviations contribute to the accelerated damage of track components. Detecting wheel defects at an early stage is crucial to ensure safe and comfortable operation, as well as to minimize maintenance costs. However, the presence of various vibrations, such as those induced by the track, traction motors, and other rolling stock subsystems, poses a significant challenge for onboard detection techniques. These vibrations create difficulties in accurately identifying wheel defects in real-time during operational activities, often resulting in false alarms. This research paper aims to address this issue by using a hybrid deep learning-based approach for the accurate detection of various types of wheel defects using accelerometer data. The proposed approach aims to enhance wheel defect detection accuracy while considering onboard techniques' cost-effectiveness and efficiency. A realistic simulation model of the railway wheelset is developed to generate a comprehensive dataset. To generate vibration data in various scenarios, the model is simulated for 20 s under different conditions, including one non-faulty scenario and six faulty scenarios. The simulations are conducted at different speeds and track conditions to capture a wide range of operating conditions. Within each simulation iteration, a total of 200,000 data points are generated, providing a comprehensive dataset for analysis and evaluation. The generated data are then utilized to train and evaluate a hybrid deep learning model, employing a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) as a feature extractor and multiple machine learning models (support vector machine, random forest, decision tree, and k-nearest neighbors) for performance comparison. The results demonstrate that the MLP-RF (multi-layer perceptron with random forest) model achieved an accuracy of 99%, while the MLP-DT (multi-layer perceptron with decision tree) model achieved an accuracy of 98%. Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks pose a significant cybersecurity threat to software-defined networks (SDNs). This paper proposes a feature-engineering- and machine-learning-based approach to detect DDoS attacks in SDNs. First, the CSE-CIC-IDS2018 dataset was cleaned and normalized, and the optimal feature subset was found using an improved binary grey wolf optimization algorithm. Next, the optimal feature subset was trained and tested in Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), Decision Tree, and XGBoost machine learning algorithms, from which the best classifier was selected for DDoS attack detection and deployed in the SDN controller. The results show that RF performs best when compared across several performance metrics (e.g., accuracy, precision, recall, F1 and AUC values). We also explore the comparison between different models and algorithms. As criminal activity increasingly relies on digital devices, the field of digital forensics plays a vital role in identifying and investigating criminals. In this paper, we addressed the problem of anomaly detection in digital forensics data. Our objective was to propose an effective approach for identifying suspicious patterns and activities that could indicate criminal behavior. To achieve this, we introduce a novel method called the Novel Support Vector Neural Network (NSVNN). We evaluated the performance of the NSVNN by conducting experiments on a real-world dataset of digital forensics data. The dataset consisted of various features related to network activity, system logs, and file metadata. Through our experiments, we compared the NSVNN with several existing anomaly detection algorithms, including Support Vector Machines (SVM) and neural networks. We measured and analyzed the performance of each algorithm in terms of the accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. Furthermore, we provide insights into the specific features that contribute significantly to the detection of anomalies. Our results demonstrated that the NSVNN method outperformed the existing algorithms in terms of anomaly detection accuracy. Terrain traversability is critical for developing Go/No-Go maps for ground vehicles, which significantly impact a mission's success. To predict the mobility of terrain, one must understand the soil characteristics. In-situ measurements performed in the field are the current method of collecting this information, which is time-consuming, costly, and can be lethal for military operations. This paper investigates an alternative approach using thermal, multispectral, and hyperspectral remote sensing from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform. Remotely sensed data combined with machine learning (linear, ridge, lasso, partial least squares (PLS), support vector machines (SVM), and k nearest neighbors (KNN)) and deep learning (multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and convolutional neural network (CNN)) are used to perform a comparative study to estimate the soil properties, such as the soil moisture and terrain strength, used to generate prediction maps of these terrain characteristics. This study found that deep learning outperformed machine learning. Specifically, a multi-layer perceptron performed the best for predicting the percent moisture content (R2/RMSE = 0.97/1.55) and the soil strength (in PSI), as measured by a cone penetrometer for the averaged 0–6" (CP06) (R2/RMSE = 0.95/67) and 0–12" depth (CP12) (R2/RMSE = 0.92/94). A Polaris MRZR vehicle was used to test the application of these prediction maps for mobility purposes, and correlations were observed between the CP06 and the rear wheel slip and the CP12 and the vehicle speed. Thus, this study demonstrates the potential of a more rapid, cost-efficient, and safer approach to predict terrain properties for mobility mapping using remote sensing data with machine and deep learning algorithms. Due to subjectivity in refereeing, the results of race walking are often questioned. To overcome this limitation, artificial-intelligence-based technologies have demonstrated their potential. The paper aims at presenting WARNING, an inertial-based wearable sensor integrated with a support vector machine algorithm to automatically identify race-walking faults. Two WARNING sensors were used to gather the 3D linear acceleration related to the shanks of ten expert race-walkers. Participants were asked to perform a race circuit following three race-walking conditions: legal, illegal with loss-of-contact and illegal with knee-bent. Thirteen machine learning algorithms, belonging to the decision tree, support vector machine and k-nearest neighbor categories, were evaluated. An inter-athlete training procedure was applied. Algorithm performance was evaluated in terms of overall accuracy, F1 score and G-index, as well as by computing the prediction speed. The quadratic support vector was confirmed to be the best-performing classifier, achieving an accuracy above 90% with a prediction speed of 29,000 observations/s when considering data from both shanks. A significant reduction of the performance was assessed when considering only one lower limb side. Motor imagery (MI) is a technique of imagining the performance of a motor task without actually using the muscles. When employed in a brain–computer interface (BCI) supported by electroencephalographic (EEG) sensors, it can be used as a successful method of human–computer interaction. In this paper, the performance of six different classifiers, namely linear discriminant analysis (LDA), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and three classifiers from the family of convolutional neural networks (CNN), is evaluated using EEG MI datasets. The study investigates the effectiveness of these classifiers on MI, guided by a static visual cue, dynamic visual guidance, and a combination of dynamic visual and vibrotactile (somatosensory) guidance. The effect of filtering passband during data preprocessing was also investigated. The results show that the ResNet-based CNN significantly outperforms the competing classifiers on both vibrotactile and visually guided data when detecting different directions of MI. Preprocessing the data using low-frequency signal features proves to be a better solution to achieve higher classification accuracy. It has also been shown that vibrotactile guidance has a significant impact on classification accuracy, with the associated improvement particularly evident for architecturally simpler classifiers. These findings have important implications for the development of EEG-based BCIs, as they provide valuable insight into the suitability of different classifiers for different contexts of use. The work carried out in this paper consists of the classification of the physiological signal generated by eye movement called Electrooculography (EOG). The human eye performs simultaneous movements, when focusing on an object, generating a potential change in origin between the retinal epithelium and the cornea and modeling the eyeball as a dipole with a positive and negative hemisphere. Supervised learning algorithms were implemented to classify five eye movements; left, right, down, up and blink. Wavelet Transform was used to obtain information in the frequency domain characterizing the EOG signal with a bandwidth of 0.5 to 50 Hz; training results were obtained with the implementation of K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) 69.4%, a Support Vector Machine (SVM) of 76.9% and Decision Tree (DT) 60.5%, checking the accuracy through the Jaccard index and other metrics such as the confusion matrix and ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) curve. The clinical success of vascular interventional surgery relies heavily on a surgeon's catheter/guidewire manipulation skills and strategies. An objective and accurate assessment method plays a critical role in evaluating the surgeon's technical manipulation skill level. Most of the existing evaluation methods incorporate the use of information technology to find more objective assessment models based on various metrics. However, in these models, sensors are often attached to the surgeon's hands or to interventional devices for data collection, which constrains the surgeon's operational movements or exerts an influence on the motion trajectory of interventional devices. In this paper, an image information-based assessment method is proposed for the evaluation of the surgeon's manipulation skills without the requirement of attaching sensors to the surgeon or catheters/guidewires. Surgeons are allowed to use their natural bedside manipulation skills during the data collection process. Their manipulation features during different catheterization tasks are derived from the motion analysis of the catheter/guidewire in video sequences. Notably, data relating to the number of speed peaks, slope variations, and the number of collisions are included in the assessment. Furthermore, the contact forces, resulting from interactions between the catheter/guidewire and the vascular model, are sensed by a 6-DoF F/T sensor. A support vector machine (SVM) classification framework is developed to discriminate the surgeon's catheterization skill levels. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed SVM-based assessment method can obtain an accuracy of 97.02% to distinguish between the expert and novice manipulations, which is higher than that of other existing research achievements. Electronic Control Units (ECUs) have been increasingly used in modern vehicles to control the operations of the vehicle, improve driving comfort, and safety. For the operation of the vehicle, these ECUs communicate using a Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol that has many security vulnerabilities. According to the report of Upstream 2022, more than 900 automotive cybersecurity incidents were reported in 2021 only. In addition to developing a more secure CAN protocol, intrusion detection can provide a path to mitigate cyberattacks on the vehicle. This paper proposes a machine learning-based intrusion detection system (IDS) using a Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Tree (DT), and K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and investigates the effectiveness of the IDS using multiple real-world datasets. The novelty of our developed IDS is that it has been trained and tested on multiple vehicular datasets (Kia Soul and a Chevrolet Spark) to detect and classify intrusion. Our IDS has achieved accuracy up to 99.9% with a high true positive and a low false negative rate. Finally, the comparison of our performance evaluation outcomes demonstrates that the proposed IDS outperforms the existing works in terms of its liability and efficiency to detect cyber-attacks with a minimal error rate. The application of the Internet of Things (IoT), vehicles to infrastructure (V2I) communication and intelligent roadside units (RSU) are promising paradigms to improve road traffic safety. However, for the RSUs to communicate with the vehicles and transmit the data to the remote location, RSUs require enough power and good network quality. Recent advances in technology have improved lithium-ion battery capabilities. However, other complementary methodologies including battery management systems (BMS) have to be developed to provide an early warning sign of the battery's state of health. In this paper, we have evaluated the impact of the received signal strength indication (RSSI) and the current consumption at different transmission frequencies on a static battery-based RSU that depends on the global system for mobile communications (GSM)/general packet radio services (GPRS). Machine learning (ML) models, for instance, Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM), were employed and tested on the collected data and later compared using the coefficient of determination ( R 2 ). The models were used to predict the battery current consumption based on the RSSI of the location where the RSUs were imposed and the frequency at which the RSU transmits the data to the remote database. The RF was preferable to SVM for predicting current consumption with an R 2 of 98% and 94%, respectively. It is essential to accurately forecast the battery health of RSUs to assess their dependability and running time. The primary duty of the BMS is to estimate the status of the battery and its dynamic operating limits. However, achieving an accurate and robust battery state of charge remains a significant challenge. Based on orbital angular momentum (OAM) properties of Laguerre–Gaussian beams LG( p , ℓ ), a robust optical encoding model for efficient data transmission applications is designed. This paper presents an optical encoding model based on an intensity profile generated by a coherent superposition of two OAM-carrying Laguerre–Gaussian modes and a machine learning detection method. In the encoding process, the intensity profile for data encoding is generated based on the selection of p and ℓ indices, while the decoding process is performed using a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm. A landslide is one of the most destructive natural disasters in the world. The accurate modeling and prediction of landslide hazards have been used as some of the vital tools for landslide disaster prevention and control. The purpose of this study was to explore the application of coupling models in landslide susceptibility evaluation. This paper used Weixin County as the research object. First, according to the landslide catalog database constructed, there were 345 landslides in the study area. Twelve environmental factors were selected, including terrain (elevation, slope, slope direction, plane curvature, and profile curvature), geological structure (stratigraphic lithology and distance from fault zone), meteorological hydrology (average annual rainfall and distance to rivers), and land cover (NDVI, land use, and distance to roads). Then, a single model (logistic regression, support vector machine, and random forest) and a coupled model (IV–LR, IV–SVM, IV–RF, FR–LR, FR–SVM, and FR–RF) based on information volume and frequency ratio were constructed, and the accuracy and reliability of the models were compared and analyzed. Finally, the influence of environmental factors on landslide susceptibility under the optimal model was discussed. The results showed that the prediction accuracy of the nine models ranged from 75.2% (LR model) to 94.9% (FR–RF model), and the coupling accuracy was generally higher than that of the single model. Therefore, the coupling model could improve the prediction accuracy of the model to a certain extent. The FR–RF coupling model had the highest accuracy. Under the optimal model FR–RF, distance from the road, NDVI, and land use were the three most important environmental factors, ac-counting for 20.15%, 13.37%, and 9.69%, respectively. Therefore, it was necessary for Weixin County to strengthen the monitoring of mountains near roads and areas with sparse vegetation to prevent landslides caused by human activities and rainfall. The sensitivity and selectivity profiles of gas sensors are always changed by sensor drifting, sensor aging, and the surroundings (e.g., temperature and humidity changes), which lead to a serious decline in gas recognition accuracy or even invalidation. To address this issue, the practical solution is to retrain the network to maintain performance, leveraging its rapid, incremental online learning capacity. In this paper, we develop a bio-inspired spiking neural network (SNN) to recognize nine types of flammable and toxic gases, which supports few-shot class-incremental learning, and can be retrained quickly with a new gas at a low accuracy cost. Compared with gas recognition approaches such as support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), principal component analysis (PCA) +SVM, PCA+KNN, and artificial neural network (ANN), our network achieves the highest accuracy of 98.75% in five-fold cross-validation for identifying nine types of gases, each with five different concentrations. Soybean plays an important role in food, medicine, and industry. The quality inspection of soybean is essential for soybean yield and the agricultural economy. However, soybean pest is an important factor that seriously affects soybean yield, among which leguminivora glycinivorella matsumura is the most frequent pest. Aiming at the problem that the traditional detection methods have low accuracy and need a large number of samples to train the model, this paper proposed a detection method for leguminivora glycinivorella matsumura based on an A-ResNet (Attention-ResNet) meta-learning model. In this model, the ResNet network was combined with Attention to obtain the feature vectors that can better express the samples, so as to improve the performance of the model. As well, the classifier was designed as a multi-class support vector machine (SVM) to reduce over-fitting. Furthermore, in order to improve the training stability of the model and the prediction performance on the testing set, the traditional Batch Normalization was replaced by the Layer Normalization, and the Label Smooth method was used to punish the original loss. The experimental results showed that the accuracy of the A-ResNet meta-learning model reached 94.57 ± 0.19%, which can realize rapid and accurate nondestructive detection, and provides theoretical support for the intelligent detection of soybean pests. In recent years, massive development in the malware industry changed the entire landscape for malware development. Therefore, cybercriminals became more sophisticated by advancing their development techniques from file-based to fileless malware. As file-based malware depends on files to spread itself, on the other hand, fileless malware does not require a traditional file system and uses benign processes to carry out its malicious intent. Therefore, it evades conventional detection techniques and remains stealthy. This paper briefly explains fileless malware, its life cycle, and its infection chain. Moreover, it proposes a detection technique based on feature analysis using machine learning for fileless malware detection. The failure of insulators may seriously threaten the safe operation of the power system, where the state detection of high-voltage insulators is a must for the normal and safe operation of the power system. Based on the data of insulators in aerial images, this work explored an enhanced particle swarm algorithm to optimize the parameters of the support vector machine. A support vector machine model was therefore established for the identification of the normal and defective states of the insulators. This methodology works with the structure minimization principle of SVM and the characteristics of particle swarm fast optimization. First, the aerial insulator image was segmented as a target by way of the seed region growth based on double-layer cascade morphological improvements, and then, HOG features plus GLCM features were extracted as sample data. Finally, an ameliorated PSO-SVM classifier was designed to realize insulator state identification. Comparisons were made between PSO-SVM and conventional machine learning algorithms, SVM and Random Forest, and an optimization algorithm, Gray Wolf Optimization Support Vector Machine (GWO-SVM), and advanced neural network CNN. The experimental results showed that the performance of the algorithm proposed in this paper touched the top level, where the recognition accuracy rate was 92.11%, the precision rate 90%, the recall rate 94.74%, and the F1-score 92.31%. Today, society is more aware of their well-being and health, making wearable devices a new and affordable way to track them continuously. Smartwatches allow access to daily vital physiological measurements, which help people to be aware of their health status. Even though these technologies allow the following of different health conditions, their application in health is still limited to the following physical parameters to allow physicians treatment and diagnosis. This paper presents LM Research, a smart monitoring system mainly composed of a web page, REST APIs, machine learning algorithms, psychological questionnaire, and smartwatches. The system introduces the continuous monitoring of the users' physical and mental indicators to prevent a wellness crisis; the mental indicators and the system's continuous feedback to the user could be, in the future, a tool for medical specialists treating well-being. For this purpose, it collects psychological parameters on smartwatches and mental health data using a psychological questionnaire to develop a supervised machine learning wellness model that predicts the wellness of smartwatch users. The full construction of the database and the technology employed for its development is presented. Moreover, six machine learning algorithms (Decision Tree, Random Forest, Naive Bayes, Neural Networks, Support Vector Machine, and K-nearest neighbor) were applied to the database to test which classifies better the information obtained by the proposed system. Addressing data anomalies (e.g., garbage data, outliers, redundant data, and missing data) plays a vital role in performing accurate analytics (billing, forecasting, load profiling, etc.) on smart homes' energy consumption data. From the literature, it has been identified that the data imputation with machine learning (ML)-based single-classifier approaches are used to address data quality issues. However, these approaches are not effective to address the hidden issues of smart home energy consumption data due to the presence of a variety of anomalies. Hence, this paper proposes ML-based ensemble classifiers using random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), decision tree (DT), naive Bayes, K-nearest neighbor, and neural networks to handle all the possible anomalies in smart home energy consumption data. The proposed approach initially identifies all anomalies and removes them, and then imputes this removed/missing information. The entire implementation consists of four parts. Part 1 presents anomaly detection and removal, part 2 presents data imputation, part 3 presents single-classifier approaches, and part 4 presents ensemble classifiers approaches. To assess the classifiers' performance, various metrics, namely, accuracy, precision, recall/sensitivity, specificity, and F1 score are computed. From these metrics, it is identified that the ensemble classifier "RF+SVM+DT" has shown superior performance over the conventional single classifiers as well the other ensemble classifiers for anomaly handling. Heart failure (HF) is a serious condition in which the heart fails to supply the body with enough oxygen and nutrients to function normally. Early and accurate detection of heart failure is critical for impeding disease progression. An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a test that records the rhythm and electrical activity of the heart and is used to detect HF. It is used to look for irregularities in the heart's rhythm or electrical conduction, as well as a history of heart attacks, ischemia, and other conditions that may initiate HF. However, sometimes, it becomes difficult and time-consuming to interpret the ECG signal, even for a cardiac expert. This paper proposes two models to automatically detect HF from ECG signals: the first one introduces a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), while the second one suggests an extension of it by integrating a Support Vector Machine (SVM) layer for the classification at the end of the network. The proposed models provide a more accurate automatic HF detection using 2-s ECG fragments. Both models are smaller than previously proposed models in the literature when the architecture is taken into account, reducing both training time and memory consumption. The MIT-BIH and the BIDMC databases are used for training and testing the adopted models. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework by achieving an accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of over 99% with blindfold cross-validation. The proper classification of the origins of food products is a crucial issue all over the world nowadays. In this paper, the authors present a device—a multispectral portable fibre-optic reflectometer and signal processing patch—together with a machine-learning algorithm for the classification of the origins of chicken eggshells in the case of Mycoplasma synoviae infection. The sensor device was developed based on previous studies with a continuous spectrum in transmittance and selected spectral lines in reflectance. In the described case, the sensor is based on the integration of reflected spectral data from short spectral bands from the VIS and NIR region, which are produced by single-colour LEDs and introduced to the sample via a fibre bundle. The measurement is carried out in a sequence, and the reflected signal is pre-processed to be put in the machine learning algorithm. The support vector machine algorithm is used together with three different types of data normalization. The obtained results of the F-score factor for classification of the origins of samples show that the percentages of eggs coming from Mycoplasma synoviae infected hens are up to 87% for white and 96% for brown eggshells. In recent publications, capacitive sensing floors have been shown to be able to localize individuals in an unobtrusive manner. This paper demonstrates that it might be possible to utilize the walking characteristics extracted from a capacitive floor to recognize subject and gender. Several neural network-based machine learning techniques are developed for recognizing the gender and identity of a target. These algorithms were trained and validated using a dataset constructed from the information captured from 23 subjects while walking, alone, on the sensing floor. A deep neural network comprising a Bi-directional Long Short-Term Memory (BLSTM) provided the most accurate identity performance, classifying individuals with an accuracy of 98.12% on the test data. On the other hand, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) was the most accurate for gender recognition, attaining an accuracy of 93.3%. The neural network-based algorithms are benchmarked against Support Vector Machine (SVM), which is a classifier used in many reported works for floor-based recognition tasks. Human activity monitoring is a fascinating area of research to support autonomous living in the aged and disabled community. Cameras, sensors, wearables, and non-contact microwave sensing have all been suggested in the past as methods for identifying distinct human activities. Microwave sensing is an approach that has lately attracted much interest since it has the potential to address privacy problems caused by cameras and discomfort caused by wearables, especially in the healthcare domain. A fundamental drawback of the current microwave sensing methods such as radar is non-line-of-sight and multi-floor environments. They need precise and regulated conditions to detect activity with high precision. In this paper, we have utilised the publicly available online database based on the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) system developed at the Communications, Sensing and Imaging group at the University of Glasgow, UK (references 39 and 40). The IRS system works better in the multi-floor and non-line-of-sight environments. This work for the first time uses algorithms such as support vector machine Bagging and Decision Tree on the publicly available IRS data and achieves better accuracy when a subset of the available data is considered along specific human activities. Machine learning (ML) has been widely used worldwide to develop crop yield forecasting models. However, it is still challenging to identify the most critical features from a dataset. Although either feature selection (FS) or feature extraction (FX) techniques have been employed, no research compares their performances and, more importantly, the benefits of combining both methods. Therefore, this paper proposes a framework that uses non-feature reduction (All-F) as a baseline to investigate the performance of FS, FX, and a combination of both (FSX). The case study employs the vegetation condition index (VCI)/temperature condition index (TCI) to develop 21 rice yield forecasting models for eight sub-regions in Vietnam based on ML methods, namely linear, support vector machine (SVM), decision tree (Tree), artificial neural network (ANN), and Ensemble. The results reveal that FSX takes full advantage of the FS and FX, leading FSX-based models to perform the best in 18 out of 21 models, while 2 (1) for FS-based (FX-based) models. These FXS-, FS-, and FX-based models improve All-F-based models at an average level of 21% and up to 60% in terms of RMSE. Furthermore, 21 of the best models are developed based on Ensemble (13 models), Tree (6 models), linear (1 model), and ANN (1 model). These findings highlight the significant role of FS, FX, and specially FSX coupled with a wide range of ML algorithms (especially Ensemble) for enhancing the accuracy of predicting crop yield.
