IoT-based smart transportation monitors vehicles, cargo, and driver statuses for safe movement. Due to the limited computational capabilities of the sensors, the IoT devices require powerful remote servers to execute their tasks, and this phenomenon is called task offloading. Researchers have developed efficient task offloading and scheduling mechanisms for IoT devices to reduce energy consumption and response time. However, most research has not considered fault-tolerance-based job allocation for IoT logistics trucks, task and data-aware scheduling, priority-based task offloading, or multiple-parameter-based fog node selection. To overcome the limitations, we proposed a Multi-Objective Task-Aware Offloading and Scheduling Framework for IoT Logistics (MT-OSF). The proposed model prioritizes the tasks into delay-sensitive and computation-intensive tasks using a priority-based offloader and forwards the two lists to the Task-Aware Scheduler (TAS) for further processing on fog and cloud nodes. The Task-Aware Scheduler (TAS) uses a multi-criterion decision-making process, i.e., the analytical hierarchy process (AHP), to calculate the fog nodes' priority for task allocation and scheduling. The AHP decides the fog nodes' priority based on node energy, bandwidth, RAM, and MIPS power. Similarly, the TAS also calculates the shortest distance between the IoT-enabled vehicle and the fog node to which the IoT tasks are assigned for execution. A task-aware scheduler schedules delay-sensitive tasks on nearby fog nodes while allocating computation-intensive tasks to cloud data centers using the FCFS algorithm. Fault-tolerant manager is used to check task failure; if any task fails, the proposed system re-executes the tasks, and if any fog node fails, the proposed system allocates the tasks to another fog node to reduce the task failure ratio. The proposed model is simulated in iFogSim2 and demonstrates a 7% reduction in response time, 16% reduction in energy consumption, and 22% reduction in task failure ratio in comparison to Ant Colony Optimization and Round Robin. The escalating reliance of modern society on information and communication technology has rendered it vulnerable to an array of cyber-attacks, with distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks emerging as one of the most prevalent threats. This paper delves into the intricacies of DDoS attacks, which exploit compromised machines numbering in the thousands to disrupt data services and online commercial platforms, resulting in significant downtime and financial losses. Recognizing the gravity of this issue, various detection techniques have been explored, yet the quantity and prior detection of DDoS attacks has seen a decline in recent methods. This research introduces an innovative approach by integrating evolutionary optimization algorithms and machine learning techniques. Specifically, the study proposes XGB-GA Optimization, RF-GA Optimization, and SVM-GA Optimization methods, employing Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) Optimization with Tree-based Pipelines Optimization Tool (TPOT)-Genetic Programming. Datasets pertaining to DDoS attacks were utilized to train machine learning models based on XGB, RF, and SVM algorithms, and 10-fold cross-validation was employed. The models were further optimized using EAs, achieving remarkable accuracy scores: 99.99% with the XGB-GA method, 99.50% with RF-GA, and 99.99% with SVM-GA. Furthermore, the study employed TPOT to identify the optimal algorithm for constructing a machine learning model, with the genetic algorithm pinpointing XGB-GA as the most effective choice. Social media platforms and online gaming sites play a pervasive role in facilitating peer interaction and social development for adolescents, but they also pose potential threats to health and safety. It is crucial to tackle cyberbullying issues within these platforms to ensure the healthy social development of adolescents. Cyberbullying has been linked to adverse mental health outcomes among adolescents, including anxiety, depression, academic underperformance, and an increased risk of suicide. While cyberbullying is a concern for all adolescents, those with disabilities are particularly susceptible and face a higher risk of being targets of cyberbullying. Our research addresses these challenges by introducing a personalized online virtual companion guided by artificial intelligence (AI). The web-based virtual companion's interactions aim to assist adolescents in detecting cyberbullying. More specifically, an adolescent with ASD watches a cyberbullying scenario in a virtual environment, and the AI virtual companion then asks the adolescent if he/she detected cyberbullying. To inform the virtual companion in real time to know if the adolescent has learned about detecting cyberbullying, we have implemented fast and lightweight cyberbullying detection models employing the T5-small and MobileBERT networks. Thanks to advancements in silicon photomultiplier sensors (SiPMs) and system-on-chip (SoC) technology, our INFN Roma1 group developed ArduSiPM in 2012, the first all-in-one scintillator particle detector in the literature. It used a custom Arduino Due shield to process fast signals, utilizing the Microchip Sam3X8E SoC's internal peripherals to control and acquire SiPM signals. The availability of radiation-tolerant SoCs, combined with the goal of reducing system space and weight, led to the development of an innovative second-generation board, a better-performing device called Cosmo ArduSiPM, suitable for space missions. The architecture of the new detector is based on the Microchip SAMV71 300 MHz, 32-bit ARM® Cortex®-M7 (Microchip Technology Inc., Chandler, AZ, USA). While the analog front-end is essentially identical to the ArduSiPM, it utilizes components with the smallest possible package. The board fits in a CubeSat module. Thanks to the compact design, the board has two independent channels, with a total weight of only 40 grams within a CubeSat form factor. The ArduSiPM architecture is based on a single microcontroller and fast discrete analog electronics. It benefits from the continued development of SoCs related to the IoT (Internet of Things) market. Compared with a system with a custom ASIC, this architecture based on software and SoC capabilities offers considerable advantages in terms of cost and development time. The ability to incorporate new commercial SoCs, continuously emerging from advancements in the aerospace and automotive industries, provides the system with a robust foundation for sustained growth over the years. A detailed characterization of the hardware and the system's response to different photon fluxes is presented in this article. Additionally, coupling the device with a scintillator was tested at the end of this article as a preliminary trial for future measurements, showing potential for further enhancement of the detector's capabilities. Accelerated by the adoption of remote monitoring during the COVID-19 pandemic, interest in using digitally captured behavioral data to predict patient outcomes has grown; however, it is unclear how feasible digital phenotyping studies may be in patients with recent ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack. In this perspective, we present participant feedback and relevant smartphone data metrics suggesting that digital phenotyping of post-stroke depression is feasible. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a growing network of interconnected devices used in transportation, finance, public services, healthcare, smart cities, surveillance, and agriculture. IoT devices are increasingly integrated into mobile assets like trains, cars, and airplanes. Among the IoT components, wearable sensors are expected to reach three billion by 2050, becoming more common in smart environments like buildings, campuses, and healthcare facilities. A notable IoT application is the smart campus for educational purposes. Timely notifications are essential in critical scenarios. IoT devices gather and relay important information in real time to individuals with special needs via mobile applications and connected devices, aiding health-monitoring and decision-making. Ensuring IoT connectivity with end users requires long-range communication, low power consumption, and cost-effectiveness. The LPWAN is a promising technology for meeting these needs, offering a low cost, long range, and minimal power use. Despite their potential, mobile IoT and LPWANs in healthcare, especially for emergency response systems, have not received adequate research attention. Our study evaluated an LPWAN-based emergency response system for visually impaired individuals on the Hazara University campus in Mansehra, Pakistan. This article discusses the use of distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) for monitoring gas–liquid two-phase slug flow in horizontal pipes, using standard telecommunication fiber optics connected to a DAS integrator for data acquisition. The experiments were performed in a 14 m long, 5 cm diameter transparent PVC pipe with a fiber cable helically wrapped around the pipe. Using mineral oil and compressed air, the system captured various flow rates and gas–oil ratios. New algorithms were developed to characterize slug flow using DAS data, including slug frequency, translational velocity, and the lengths of slug body, slug unit, and the liquid film region that had never been discussed previously. This study employed a high-speed camera next to the fiber cable sensing section for validation purposes and achieved a good correlation among the measurements under all conditions tested. Compared to traditional multiphase flow sensors, this technology is non-intrusive and offers continuous, real-time measurement across long distances and in harsh environments, such as subsurface or downhole conditions. It is cost-effective, particularly where multiple measurement points are required. Characterizing slug flow in real time is crucial to many industries that suffer slug-flow-related issues. This research demonstrated the DAS's potential to characterize slug flow quantitively. The demand for green hydrogen as an energy carrier is projected to exceed 350 million tons per year by 2050, driven by the need for sustainable distribution and storage of energy generated from sources. Despite its potential, hydrogen production currently faces challenges related to cost efficiency, compliance, monitoring, and safety. This work proposes Hydrogen 4.0, a cyber–physical approach that leverages Industry 4.0 technologies—including smart sensing, analytics, and the Internet of Things (IoT)—to address these issues in hydrogen energy plants. Such an approach has the potential to enhance efficiency, safety, and compliance through real-time data analysis, predictive maintenance, and optimised resource allocation, ultimately facilitating the adoption of renewable green hydrogen. Smart power grids suffer from electricity theft cyber-attacks, where malicious consumers compromise their smart meters (SMs) to downscale the reported electricity consumption readings. This problem costs electric utility companies worldwide considerable financial burdens and threatens power grid stability. Therefore, several machine learning (ML)-based solutions have been proposed to detect electricity theft; however, they have limitations. First, most existing works employ supervised learning that requires the availability of labeled datasets of benign and malicious electricity usage samples. Unfortunately, this approach is not practical due to the scarcity of real malicious electricity usage samples. Moreover, training a supervised detector on specific cyberattack scenarios results in a robust detector against those attacks, but it might fail to detect new attack scenarios. Second, although a few works investigated anomaly detectors for electricity theft, none of the existing works addressed consumers' privacy. To address these limitations, in this paper, we propose a comprehensive federated learning (FL)-based deep anomaly detection framework tailored for practical, reliable, and privacy-preserving energy theft detection. In our proposed framework, consumers train local deep autoencoder-based detectors on their private electricity usage data and only share their trained detectors' parameters with an EUC aggregation server to iteratively build a global anomaly detector. Our extensive experimental results not only demonstrate the superior performance of our anomaly detector compared to the supervised detectors but also the capability of our proposed FL-based anomaly detector to accurately detect zero-day attacks of electricity theft while preserving consumers' privacy. A novel, in situ, low-cost and facile method has been developed to fabricate flexible NO2 sensors capable of operating at ambient temperature, addressing the urgent need for monitoring this toxic gas. This technique involves the synthesis of highly porous structures, as well as the specific development of laser-induced graphene (LIG) and its heterostructures with SnO2, all through laser scribing. The morphology, phases, and compositions of the sensors were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The effects of SnO2 addition on structural and sensor properties were investigated. Gas-sensing measurements were conducted at room temperature with NO2 concentrations ranging from 50 to 10 ppm. LIG and LIG/SnO2 sensors exhibited distinct trends in response to NO2, and the gas-sensing mechanism was elucidated. Overall, this study demonstrates the feasibility of utilizing LIG and LIG/SnO2 heterostructures in gas-sensing applications at ambient temperatures, underscoring their broad potential across diverse fields. Waste management is one of the many major challenges faced by all urban cities around the world. With the increase in population, the current mechanisms for waste collection and disposal are under strain. The waste management problem is a global challenge that requires a collaborative effort from different stakeholders. Moreover, there is a need to develop technology-based solutions besides engaging the communities and establishing novel policies. While there are several challenges in waste management, the collection of waste using the current infrastructure is among the top challenges. Waste management suffers from issues such as a limited number of collection trucks, different types of household and industrial waste, and a low number of dumping points. The focus of this paper is on utilizing the available waste collection transportation capacity to efficiently dispose of the waste in a time-efficient manner while maximizing toxic waste disposal. A novel knapsack-based technique is proposed that fills the collection trucks with waste bins from different geographic locations by taking into account the amount of waste and toxicity in the bins using IoT sensors. Using the Knapsack technique, the collection trucks are loaded with waste bins up to their carrying capacity while maximizing their toxicity. The proposed model was implemented in MATLAB, and detailed simulation results show that the proposed technique outperforms other waste collection approaches. In particular, the amount of high-priority toxic waste collection was improved up to 47% using the proposed technique. Furthermore, the number of waste collection visits is reduced in the proposed scheme as compared to the conventional method, resulting in the recovery of the equipment cost in less than a year. Low-cost ambient sensors have been identified as a promising technology for monitoring air pollution at a high spatio-temporal resolution. However, the pollutant data captured by these cost-effective sensors are less accurate than their conventional counterparts and require careful calibration to improve their accuracy and reliability. In this paper, we propose to leverage temporal information, such as the duration of time a sensor has been deployed and the time of day the reading was taken, in order to improve the calibration of low-cost sensors. This information is readily available and has so far not been utilized in the reported literature for the calibration of cost-effective ambient gas pollutant sensors. We make use of three data sets collected by research groups around the world, who gathered the data from field-deployed low-cost CO and NO2 sensors co-located with accurate reference sensors. Our investigation shows that using the temporal information as a co-variate can significantly improve the accuracy of common machine learning-based calibration techniques, such as Random Forest and Long Short-Term Memory. In the Internet of Things (IoT) era, the surge in Machine-Type Devices (MTDs) has introduced Massive IoT (MIoT), opening new horizons in the world of connected devices. However, such proliferation presents challenges, especially in storing and analyzing massive, heterogeneous data streams in real time. In order to manage Massive IoT data streams, we utilize analytical database software such as Apache Druid version 28.0.0 that excels in real-time data processing. Our approach relies on a publish/subscribe mechanism, where device-generated data are relayed to a dedicated broker, effectively functioning as a separate server. This broker enables any application to subscribe to the dataset, promoting a dynamic and responsive data ecosystem. At the core of our data transmission infrastructure lies Apache Kafka version 3.6.1, renowned for its exceptional data flow management performance. Kafka efficiently bridges the gap between MIoT sensors and brokers, enabling parallel clusters of brokers that lead to more scalability. In our pursuit of uninterrupted connectivity, we incorporate a fail-safe mechanism with two Software-Defined Radios (SDR) called Nutaq PicoLTE Release 1.5 within our model. This strategic redundancy enhances data transmission availability, safeguarding against connectivity disruptions. Furthermore, to enhance the data repository security, we utilize blockchain technology, specifically Hyperledger Fabric, known for its high-performance attributes, ensuring data integrity, immutability, and security. Our latency results demonstrate that our platform effectively reduces latency for 100,000 devices, qualifying as an MIoT, to less than 25 milliseconds. Furthermore, our findings on blockchain performance underscore our model as a secure platform, achieving over 800 Transactions Per Second in a dataset comprising 14,000 transactions, thereby demonstrating its high efficiency. The accurate depth imaging of piled products provides essential perception for the automated selection of individual objects that require itemized food processing, such as fish, crabs, or fruit. Traditional depth imaging techniques, such as Time-of-Flight and stereoscopy, lack the necessary depth resolution for imaging small items, such as food commodities. Although structured light methods such as laser triangulation have high depth resolution, they depend on conveyor motion for depth scanning. This manuscript introduces an active dual line-laser scanning system for depth imaging static piled items, such as a pile of crabs on a table, eliminating the need for conveyor motion to generate high-resolution 3D images. This advancement benefits robotic perception for loading individual items from a pile for itemized food processing. Leveraging a unique geometrical configuration and laser redundancy, the dual-laser strategy overcomes occlusions while reconstructing a large field of view (FOV) from a long working distance. We achieved a depth reconstruction MSE of 0.3 mm and an STD of 0.5 mm on a symmetrical pyramid stage. The proposed system demonstrates that laser scanners can produce depth maps of complex items, such as piled Chesapeake Blue Crab and White Button mushrooms. This paper presents a comprehensive exploration of a hybrid energy system that integrates wind turbines with photovoltaics (PVs) to address the intermittent nature of electricity production from these sources. The necessity for such technology arises from the sporadic nature of electricity generated by PV cells and wind turbines. The envisioned outcome is an emissions-free, more efficient alternative to traditional energy sources. A variety of optimization techniques are utilized, specifically the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm and Electric Eel Foraging Optimization (EEFO), to achieve optimal power regulation and seamless integration with the public grid, as well as to mitigate anticipated loading issues. The employed mathematical modeling and simulation techniques are used to assess the effectiveness of EEFO in optimizing the operation of grid-connected PV and wind turbine hybrid systems. In this paper, the optimization methods applied to the system's architecture are described in detail, providing a clear understanding of the intricate nature of the approach. The efficacy of these optimization strategies is rigorously evaluated through simulations of diverse operating scenarios using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The results demonstrate that the proposed optimization strategies are not only capable of precisely and swiftly compensating for linked loads, but also effectively controlling the energy supply to maintain the load's power at the desired level. Monitoring blood pressure, a parameter closely related to cardiovascular activity, can help predict imminent cardiovascular events. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to customize an existing mechanistic model of the cardiovascular system through feature extraction from cardiopulmonary acoustic signals to estimate blood pressure using artificial intelligence. As various factors, such as drug consumption, can alter the biomechanical properties of the cardiovascular system, the proposed method seeks to personalize the mechanistic model using information extracted from vibroacoustic sensors. Simulation results for the proposed approach are evaluated by calculating the error in blood pressure estimates compared to ground truth arterial line measurements, with the results showing promise for this method. Smart cities are powered by several new technologies to enhance connectivity between devices and develop a network of connected objects which can lead to many smart industrial applications. This network known as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) consists of sensor nodes that have limited computing capacity and are sometimes not able to execute intricate industrial tasks within their stipulated time frame. For faster execution, these tasks are offloaded to nearby fog nodes. Internet access and the diverse nature of network types make IIoT nodes vulnerable and are under serious malicious attacks. Malicious attacks can cause anomalies in the IIoT network by overloading complex tasks, which can compromise the fog processing capabilities. This results in an increased delay of task computation for trustworthy nodes. To improve the task execution capability of the fog computing node, it is important to avoid complex offloaded tasks due to malicious attacks. However, even after avoiding the malicious tasks, if the offloaded tasks are too complex for the fog node to execute, then the fog nodes may struggle to process all legitimate tasks within their stipulated time frame. To address these challenges, the Trust-based Efficient Execution of Offloaded IIoT Trusted tasks (EEOIT) is proposed for fog nodes. EEOIT proposes a mechanism to detect malicious nodes as well as manage the allocation of computing resources so that IIoT tasks can be completed in the specified time frame. Simulation results demonstrate that EEOIT outperforms other techniques in the literature in an IIoT setting with different task densities. Another significant feature of the proposed EEOIT technique is that it enhances the computation of trustable tasks in the network. The results show that EEOIT entertains more legitimate nodes in executing their offloaded tasks with more executed data, with reduced time and with increased mean trust values as compared to other schemes. A Hybrid LiFi and WiFi network (HLWNet) integrates the rapid data transmission capabilities of Light Fidelity (LiFi) with the extensive connectivity provided by Wireless Fidelity (WiFi), resulting in significant benefits for wireless data transmissions in the designated area. However, the challenge of decision-making during the handover process in HLWNet is made more complex due to the specific characteristics of electromagnetic signals' line-of-sight transmission, resulting in a greater level of intricacy compared to previous heterogeneous networks. This research work addresses the problem of handover decisions in the Hybrid LiFi and WiFi networks and treats it as a binary classification problem. Consequently, it proposes a handover method based on a deep neural network (DNN). The comprehensive handover scheme incorporates two sets of neural networks (ANN and DNN) that utilize input factors such as channel quality and the mobility of users to enable informed decisions during handovers. Following training with labeled datasets, the neural-network-based handover approach achieves an accuracy rate exceeding 95%. A comparative analysis of the proposed scheme against the benchmark reveals that the proposed method considerably increases user throughput by approximately 18.58% to 38.5% while reducing the handover rate by approximately 55.21% to 67.15% compared to the benchmark artificial neural network (ANN); moreover, the proposed method demonstrates robustness in the face of variations in user mobility and channel conditions. Due to damage to the network of nerves that regulate the muscles and feeling in the shoulder, arm, and forearm, brachial plexus injuries (BPIs) are known to significantly reduce the function and quality of life of affected persons. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a considerable share of global disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) is attributable to upper limb injuries, including BPIs. Telehealth can improve access concerns for patients with BPIs, particularly in lower-middle-income nations. This study used deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-assisted telepresence robots, specifically the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm, to provide in-home elbow rehabilitation with elbow flexion exercises for BPI patients. The telepresence robots were used for a six-month deployment period, and DDPG drove the DRL architecture to maximize patient-centric exercises with its robotic arm. Compared to conventional rehabilitation techniques, patients demonstrated an average increase of 4.7% in force exertion and a 5.2% improvement in range of motion (ROM) with the assistance of the telepresence robot arm. According to the findings of this study, telepresence robots are a valuable and practical method for BPI patients' at-home rehabilitation. Location privacy is an important parameter to be addressed in the case of vehicular ad hoc networks. Each vehicle frequently communicates with location-based services to find the nearest location of interest. The location messages communicated with the location server may contain sensitive information like vehicle identity, location, direction, and other headings. A Location-Based Services (LBS) server is not a trusted entity; it can interact with an adversary, compromising the location information of vehicles on the road and providing a way for an adversary to extract the future location tracks of a target vehicle. The existing works consider two or three neighboring vehicles as a virtual shadow to conceal location information. However, they did not fully utilize the semantic location information and pseudonym-changing process, which reduces the privacy protection level. Moreover, a lot of dummy location messages are generated that increase overheads in the network. To address these issues, we propose a Semantic Group Obfuscation (SGO) technique that utilizes both location semantics as well as an efficient pseudonym-changing scheme. SGO creates groups of similar status vehicles on the road and selects random position coordinates for communication with the LBS server. It hides the actual location of a target vehicle in a vicinity. The simulation results verify that the proposed scheme SGO improves the anonymization and entropy of vehicles, and it reduces the location traceability and overheads in the network in terms of computation cost and communication cost. The cost of overhead is reduced by 55% to 65% compared with existing schemes. Studying soil composition is vital for agricultural and edaphology disciplines. Presently, colorimetry serves as a prevalent method for the on-site visual examination of soil characteristics. However, this technique necessitates the laboratory-based analysis of extracted soil fragments by skilled personnel, leading to substantial time and resource consumption. Contrastingly, sensor techniques effectively gather environmental data, though they mostly lack in situ studies. Despite this, sensors offer substantial on-site data generation potential in a non-invasive manner and can be included in wireless sensor networks. Therefore, the aim of the paper is to develop a low-cost red, green, and blue (RGB)-based sensor system capable of detecting changes in the composition of the soil. The proposed sensor system was found to be effective when the sample materials, including salt, sand, and nitro phosphate, were determined under eight different RGB lights. Statistical analyses showed that each material could be classified with significant differences based on specific light variations. The results from a discriminant analysis documented the 100% prediction accuracy of the system. In order to use the minimum number of colors, all the possible color combinations were evaluated. Consequently, a combination of six colors for salt and nitro phosphate successfully classified the materials, whereas all the eight colors were found to be effective for classifying sand samples. This study explores the viability of using the avoided mode crossing phenomenon in the microwave regime to design microwave differential sensors. While the design concept can be applied to any type of planar electrically small resonators, here, it is implemented on split-ring resonators (SRRs). We use two coupled synchronous SRRs loaded onto a two-port microstrip line system to demonstrate the avoided mode crossing by varying the distance between the split of the resonators to control the coupling strength. As the coupling becomes stronger, the split in the resonance frequencies of the system increases. Alternatively, by controlling the strength of the coupling by materials under test (MUTs), we utilize the system as a microwave differential sensor. First, the avoided mode crossing is theoretically investigated using the classical microwave coupled resonator techniques. Then, the system is designed and simulated using a 3D full-wave numerical simulation. To validate the concept, a two-port microstrip line, which is magnetically coupled to two synchronous SRRs, is utilized as a sensor, where the inter-resonator coupling is chosen to be electric coupling controlled by the dielectric constant of MUTs. For the experimental validation, the sensor was fabricated using printed circuit board technology. The rapid technological advancements in the current modern world bring the attention of researchers to fast and real-time healthcare and monitoring systems. The swift advancement of the Internet of Things (IoT), coupled with the growing application of healthcare software in this area, has given rise to significant worries about the protection and confidentiality of critical health data. To address these challenges, blockchain technology has emerged as a promising solution, providing decentralized and immutable data storage and transparent transaction records. However, traditional blockchain systems still face limitations in terms of preserving data privacy. This paper proposes a novel approach to enhancing privacy preservation in IoT-based healthcare applications using homomorphic encryption techniques combined with blockchain technology. Homomorphic encryption facilitates the performance of calculations on encrypted data without requiring decryption, thus safeguarding the data's privacy throughout the computational process. The encrypted data can be processed and analyzed by authorized parties without revealing the actual contents, thereby protecting patient privacy. Furthermore, our approach incorporates smart contracts within the blockchain network to enforce access control and to define data-sharing policies. These smart contracts provide fine-grained permission settings, which ensure that only authorized entities can access and utilize the encrypted data. Recent earthquakes worldwide have led to significant loss of life and structural damage to infrastructure, especially road bridges. Existing bridge monitoring systems have limitations, including restricted detection capabilities, subjectivity, human error, labor-intensive inspections, limited access to remote areas, and high costs. Aging infrastructures pose a critical concern for organizations and government funding policies, showing signs of decay and impending structural failure. To address these challenges, this research proposes an IoT-based bridge health status monitoring and warning system that is wireless, low-cost, durable, and user-friendly. The proposed system builds upon engineering standards and guidelines to classify bridge health status into categories ranging from excellent to collapse condition. It incorporates deflection, vibration, temperature, humidity, and infrared sensors, combined with IoT and a fuzzy logic algorithm. The primary objective is to reduce bridge maintenance costs, extend lifespans, and enhance transportation safety through an early warning system via a mobile application. To obtain more accurate depth information with stereo cameras, various learning-based stereo-matching algorithms have been developed recently. These algorithms, however, are significantly affected by textureless regions in indoor applications. To address this problem, we propose a new deep-neural-network-based data-driven stereo-matching scheme that utilizes the surface normal. The proposed scheme includes a neural network and a two-stage training strategy. The neural network involves a feature-extraction module, a normal-estimation branch, and a disparity-estimation branch. The training processes of the feature-extraction module and the normal-estimation branch are supervised while the training of the disparity-estimation branch is performed unsupervised. Experimental results indicate that the proposed scheme is capable of estimating the surface normal accurately in textureless regions, leading to improvement in the disparity-estimation accuracy and stereo-matching quality in indoor applications involving such textureless regions. Microalgae provide valuable bio-components with economic and environmental benefits. The monitoring of microalgal production is mostly performed using different sensors and analytical methods that, although very powerful, are limited to qualified users. This study proposes an automated Raman spectroscopy-based sensor for the online monitoring of microalgal production. For this purpose, an in situ system with a sampling station was made of a light-tight optical chamber connected to a Raman probe. Microalgal cultures were routed to this chamber by pipes connected to pumps and valves controlled and programmed by a computer. The developed approach was evaluated on Parachlorella kessleri under different culture conditions at a laboratory and an industrial algal platform. As a result, more than 4000 Raman spectra were generated and analysed by statistical methods. These spectra reflected the physiological state of the cells and demonstrate the ability of the developed sensor to monitor the physiology of microalgal cells and their intracellular molecules of interest in a complex production environment. The use of wireless signals for device-free activity recognition and precise indoor positioning has gained significant popularity recently. By taking advantage of the characteristics of the received signals, it is possible to establish a mapping between these signals and human activities. Existing approaches for detecting human walking direction have encountered challenges in adapting to changes in the surrounding environment or different people. In this paper, we propose a new approach that uses the channel state information of received wireless signals, a Hampel filter to remove the outliers, a Discrete wavelet transform to remove the noise and extract the important features, and finally, machine and deep learning algorithms to identify the walking direction for different people and in different environments. Through experimentation, we demonstrate that our approach achieved accuracy rates of 92.9%, 95.1%, and 89% in detecting human walking directions for untrained data collected from the classroom, the meeting room, and both rooms, respectively. Our results highlight the effectiveness of our approach even for people of different genders, heights, and environments, which utilizes machine and deep learning algorithms for low-cost deployment and device-free detection of human activities in indoor environments. The internet of things (IoT) revolutionized human life, whereby a large number of interrelated devices are connected to exchange data in order to accomplish many tasks, leading to the rapid growth of connected devices, reaching the tens of billions. The Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) protocols paradigm has emerged to satisfy the IoT application requirements, especially in terms of long-range communication and low power consumption. However, LPWA technologies still do not completely meet the scalability requirement of IoT applications. The main critical issues are the restrictive duty cycle regulations of the sub-GHz band in which most LPWA technologies operate, as well as the random access to the medium. Ingenu Random Phase Multiple Access (RPMA) is an LPWA technology that uses the 2.4 GHz band that is not subject to the duty cycle constraint. Furthermore, RPMA uses Direct-Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) as a modulation technique; hence, it is an excellent candidate technology for handling scalable LPWA networks. In this paper, we perform mathematical and simulation analysis to assess RPMA scalability and the factors that affect it, especially when all the available channels are used. The results indicate that RPMA has impressive scalability. Indeed, by taking advantage of the multichannel feature in RPMA, the network capacity can be increased by up to 38 times. Aditionally, randomly selecting the Spreading Factors (SF) degrades the network scalability, as working on higher SFs will increase the probability of collision. In the field of computer vision, hand pose estimation (HPE) has attracted significant attention from researchers, especially in the fields of human–computer interaction (HCI) and virtual reality (VR). Despite advancements in 2D HPE, challenges persist due to hand dynamics and occlusions. Accurate extraction of hand features, such as edges, textures, and unique patterns, is crucial for enhancing HPE. To address these challenges, we propose SDFPoseGraphNet, a novel framework that combines the strengths of the VGG-19 architecture with spatial attention (SA), enabling a more refined extraction of deep feature maps from hand images. By incorporating the Pose Graph Model (PGM), the network adaptively processes these feature maps to provide tailored pose estimations. First Inference Module (FIM) potentials, alongside adaptively learned parameters, contribute to the PGM's final pose estimation. The SDFPoseGraphNet, with its end-to-end trainable design, optimizes across all components, ensuring enhanced precision in hand pose estimation. Our proposed model outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods, achieving an average precision of 7.49% against the Convolution Pose Machine (CPM) and 3.84% in comparison to the Adaptive Graphical Model Network (AGMN). We present a synthetic augmentation approach towards improving monocular face presentation–attack–detection (PAD) robustness to real-world noise additions. Face PAD algorithms secure authentication systems against spoofing attacks, such as pictures, videos, and 2D-inspired masks. Best-in-class PAD methods typically use 3D imagery, but these can be expensive. To reduce application cost, there is a growing field investigating monocular algorithms that detect facial artifacts. These approaches work well in laboratory conditions, but can be sensitive to the imaging environment (e.g., sensor noise, dynamic lighting, etc.). The ideal solution for noise robustness is training under all expected conditions; however, this is time consuming and expensive. Instead, we propose that physics-informed noise-augmentations can pragmatically achieve robustness. Our toolbox contains twelve sensor and lighting effect generators. We demonstrate that our toolbox generates more robust PAD features than popular augmentation methods in noisy test-evaluations. We also observe that the toolbox improves accuracy on clean test data, suggesting that it inherently helps discern spoof artifacts from imaging artifacts. We validate this hypothesis through an ablation study, where we remove liveliness pairs (e.g., live or spoof imagery only for participants) to identify how much real data can be replaced with synthetic augmentations. We demonstrate that using these noise augmentations allows us to achieve better test accuracy while only requiring 30% of participants to be fully imaged under all conditions. Software-Defined Networking (SDN), which is used in Industrial Internet of Things, uses a controller as its "network brain" located at the control plane. This uniquely distinguishes it from the traditional networking paradigms because it provides a global view of the entire network. In SDN, the controller can become a single point of failure, which may cause the whole network service to be compromised. Also, data packet transmission between controllers and switches could be impaired by natural disasters, causing hardware malfunctioning or Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. Thus, SDN controllers are vulnerable to both hardware and software failures. To overcome this single point of failure in SDN, this paper proposes an attack-aware logical link assignment (AALLA) mathematical model with the ultimate aim of restoring the SDN network by using logical link assignment from switches to the cluster (backup) controllers. We formulate the AALLA model in integer linear programming (ILP), which restores the disrupted SDN network availability by assigning the logical links to the cluster (backup) controllers. The widespread popularity of live streaming, cloud gaming, mobile video streaming, and many real-time applications relies on high-speed data to ensure low latency and seamless user experience. This large high-speed data demand has led to the development of next-generation or sixth-generation (6G) communication technology. It aims to offer high-speed communication support to multiple applications and interactive services simultaneously. But the vulnerability of node communication to the changing propagation environment often leads to call drops, data loss, and high latency. This paper presents a 6G-enabled wireless network that makes use of multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs). The distributed IRSs enhance the robustness of transmission but the increased overhead owing to multiple IRSs is the main challenge. To overcome this, efficient resource control is introduced, which associates sets of IRSs to user equipment (UE). An algorithm, namely IUABP (IRS-UE association based on pilots), is proposed; it offers selective resource control. Furthermore, the performance of the distributed IRS system is evaluated based on the achievable sum rate for different IRS numbers, reflecting elements, and transmit powers. We observed that the proposed association scheme offers an improvement of 30% in the achieved sum rate using N = 50 and R = 5 at a transmit power of 12 dBm. Depressive mood states in healthy populations are prevalent but often under-reported. Biases exist in self-reporting of depression in otherwise healthy individuals. Gait and balance control can serve as objective markers for identifying those individuals, particularly in real-world settings. We utilized inertial measurement units (IMU) to measure gait and balance control. An exploratory, cross-sectional design was used to compare individuals who reported feeling depressed at the moment (n = 49) with those who did not (n = 84). The Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-sectional Studies was employed to ensure internal validity. We recruited 133 participants aged between 18–36 years from the university community. Various instruments were used to evaluate participants' present depressive symptoms, sleep, gait, and balance. Gait and balance variables were used to detect depression, and participants were categorized into three groups: not depressed, mild depression, and moderate–high depression. Participant characteristics were analyzed using ANOVA and Kruskal–Wallis tests, and no significant differences were found in age, height, weight, BMI, and prior night's sleep between the three groups. Classification models were utilized for depression detection. The most accurate model incorporated both gait and balance variables, yielding an accuracy rate of 84.91% for identifying individuals with moderate–high depression compared to non-depressed individuals. Healthcare in terms of monitoring systems is undergoing radical changes, making it possible to gauge or monitor the health conditions of people constantly, while also removing some minor possibilities of going to the hospital. The development of automated devices that are either attached to organs or the skin, continually monitoring human activity, has been made feasible by advancements in sensor technologies, embedded systems, wireless communication technologies, nanotechnologies, and miniaturization being ultra-thin, lightweight, highly flexible, and stretchable. Wearable sensors track physiological signs together with other symptoms such as respiration, pulse, and gait pattern, etc., to spot unusual or unexpected events. Help may therefore be provided when it is required. In this study, wearable sensor-based activity-monitoring systems for people are reviewed, along with the problems that need to be overcome. In this review, we have shown smart detecting and versatile wearable electrical sensing mediums in healthcare. We have compiled piezoelectric-, electrostatic-, and thermoelectric-based wearable sensors and their working mechanisms, along with their principles, while keeping in view the different medical and healthcare conditions and a discussion on the application of these biosensors in human health. A comparison is also made between the three types of wearable energy-harvesting sensors: piezoelectric-, electrostatic-, and thermoelectric-based on their output performance. This paper proposes a novel Blockchain-based indoor navigation system that combines a foot-mounted dual-inertial measurement unit (IMU) setup and a zero-velocity update (ZUPT) algorithm for secure and accurate indoor navigation in GNSS-denied environments. The system estimates the user's position and orientation by fusing the data from two IMUs using an extended Kalman filter (EKF). The ZUPT algorithm is employed to detect and correct the error introduced by sensor drift during zero-velocity intervals, thus enhancing the accuracy of the position estimate. The proposed Low SWaP-C blockchain-based decentralized architecture ensures the security and trustworthiness of the system by providing an immutable and distributed ledger to store and verify the sensor data and navigation solutions. The proposed system is suitable for various indoor navigation applications, including autonomous vehicles, robots, and human tracking. The experimental results provide clear and compelling evidence of the effectiveness of the proposed system in ensuring the integrity, privacy, and security of navigation data through the utilization of blockchain technology. The system exhibits an impressive ability to process more than 680 transactions per second within the Hyperledger-Fabric framework. Furthermore, it demonstrates exceptional accuracy and robustness, with a mean RMSE error of 1.2 m and a peak RMSE of 3.2 during a 20 min test. By eliminating the reliance on external signals or infrastructure, the system offers an innovative, practical, and secure solution for indoor navigation in environments where GNSS signals are unavailable. Internet scams are fraudulent attempts aim to lure computer users to reveal their credentials or redirect their connections to spoofed webpages rather than the actual ones. Users' confidential information, such as usernames, passwords, and financial account numbers, is the main target of these fraudulent attempts. Internet scammers often use phishing attacks, which have no boundaries, since they could exceed hijacking conventional cyber ecosystems to hack intelligent systems, which emerged recently for the use within smart cities. This paper therefore develops a real-time framework inspired by the honeybee defense mechanism in nature for filtering phishing website attacks in smart cities. In particular, the proposed framework filters phishing websites through three main phases of investigation: PhishTank-Match (PM), Undesirable-Absent (UA), and Desirable-Present (DP) investigation phases. The PM phase is used at first in order to check whether the requested URL is listed in the blacklist of the PhishTank database. On the other hand, the UA phase is used for investigation and checking for the absence of undesirable symbols in uniform resource locators (URLs) of the requested website. Finally, the DP phase is used as another level of investigation in order to check for the presence of the requested URL in the desirable whitelist. Heart rate variability (HRV) has been used to measure autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity noninvasively. The purpose of this study was to identify the most suitable HRV parameters for ANS activity in response to brief rectal distension (RD) in patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). IBS patients participated in a five-session study. During each visit, an ECG was recorded for 15 min for baseline values and during rectal distension. For rectal distension, a balloon was inflated in the rectum and the pressure was increased in steps of 5 mmHg for 30 s; each distension was followed by a 30 s rest period when the balloon was fully deflated (0 mmHg) until either the maximum tolerance of each patient was reached or up to 60 mmHg. The time-domain, frequency-domain and nonlinear HRV parameters were calculated to assess the ANS activity. The values of each HRV parameter were compared between baseline and RD for each of the five visits as well as for all five visits combined. The sensitivity and robustness/reproducibility of each HRV parameter were also assessed. The parameters included the Sympathetic Index (SI); Root Mean Square of Successive Differences (RMSSD); High-Frequency Power (HF); Low-Frequency Power (LF); Normalized HF Power (HFn); Normalized LF Power (LFn); LF/HF; Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA); the Poincare Plot's SD1, SD2 and their ratio; and the pNN50, SDSD, SDNN and SDNN Index. Data from 17 patients were analyzed and compared between baseline and FD and among five sessions. The SI was found to be the most sensitive and robust HRV parameter in detecting the ANS response to RD. Out of nine parasympathetic parameters, only the SDNN and SDNN Index were sensitive enough to detect the parasympathetic modulation to RD during the first visit. The frequency-domain parameters did not show any change in response to RD. It was also observed that the repetitive RD in IBS patients resulted in a decreased autonomic response due to habituation because the amount of change in the HRV parameters was the highest during the first visit but diminished during subsequent visits. In conclusion, the SI and SDNN/SDNN Index are most sensitive at assessing the autonomic response to rectal distention. This article introduces a novel approach to human activity recognition (HAR) by presenting a sensor that utilizes a real-time embedded neural network. The sensor incorporates a low-cost microcontroller and an inertial measurement unit (IMU), which is affixed to the subject's chest to capture their movements. Through the implementation of a convolutional neural network (CNN) on the microcontroller, the sensor is capable of detecting and predicting the wearer's activities in real-time, eliminating the need for external processing devices. The article provides a comprehensive description of the sensor and the methodology employed to achieve real-time prediction of subject behaviors. The primary goal of this study is to develop a deep neural network for action recognition that enhances accuracy and minimizes computational costs. In this regard, we propose a modified EMO-MoviNet-A2* architecture that integrates Evolving Normalization (EvoNorm), Mish activation, and optimal frame selection to improve the accuracy and efficiency of action recognition tasks in videos. The asterisk notation indicates that this model also incorporates the stream buffer concept. The Mobile Video Network (MoviNet) is a member of the memory-efficient architectures discovered through Neural Architecture Search (NAS), which balances accuracy and efficiency by integrating spatial, temporal, and spatio-temporal operations. Our research implements the MoviNet model on the UCF101 and HMDB51 datasets, pre-trained on the kinetics dataset. Upon implementation on the UCF101 dataset, a generalization gap was observed, with the model performing better on the training set than on the testing set. To address this issue, we replaced batch normalization with EvoNorm, which unifies normalization and activation functions. Another area that required improvement was key-frame selection. We also developed a novel technique called Optimal Frame Selection (OFS) to identify key-frames within videos more effectively than random or densely frame selection methods. Combining OFS with Mish nonlinearity resulted in a 0.8–1% improvement in accuracy in our UCF101 20-classes experiment. The EMO-MoviNet-A2* model consumes 86% fewer FLOPs and approximately 90% fewer parameters on the UCF101 dataset, with a trade-off of 1–2% accuracy. Additionally, it achieves 5–7% higher accuracy on the HMDB51 dataset while requiring seven times fewer FLOPs and ten times fewer parameters compared to the reference model, Motion-Augmented RGB Stream (MARS). Q-rung orthopair fuzzy sets have been proven to be highly effective at handling uncertain data and have gained importance in decision-making processes. Torra's hesitant fuzzy model, on the other hand, offers a more generalized approach to fuzzy sets. Both of these frameworks have demonstrated their efficiency in decision algorithms, with numerous scholars contributing established theories to this research domain. In this paper, recognizing the significance of these frameworks, we amalgamated their principles to create a novel model known as Q-rung orthopair hesitant fuzzy sets. Additionally, we undertook an exploration of Aczel–Alsina aggregation operators within this innovative context. This exploration resulted in the development of a series of aggregation operators, including Q-rung orthopair hesitant fuzzy Aczel–Alsina weighted average, Q-rung orthopair hesitant fuzzy Aczel–Alsina ordered weighted average, and Q-rung orthopair hesitant fuzzy Aczel–Alsina hybrid weighted average operators. Our research also involved a detailed analysis of the effects of two crucial parameters: λ , associated with Aczel–Alsina aggregation operators, and N, related to Q-rung orthopair hesitant fuzzy sets. These parameter variations were shown to have a profound impact on the ranking of alternatives, as visually depicted in the paper. Furthermore, we delved into the realm of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), a prominent and emerging network technology. Our paper comprehensively explored how our proposed model could be applied in the context of WSNs, particularly in the context of selecting the optimal gateway node, which holds significant importance for companies operating in this domain. One of the traditional approaches to accurately capturing and monitoring gas emissions in logistics is through using gas sensors. However, connecting, maintaining, and operating gas sensors on moving vehicles in different road and weather conditions is a large and costly challenge. Historically, individuals with hearing impairments have faced neglect, lacking the necessary tools to facilitate effective communication. However, advancements in modern technology have paved the way for the development of various tools and software aimed at improving the quality of life for hearing-disabled individuals. This research paper presents a comprehensive study employing five distinct deep learning models to recognize hand gestures for the American Sign Language (ASL) alphabet. The primary objective of this study was to leverage contemporary technology to bridge the communication gap between hearing-impaired individuals and individuals with no hearing impairment. The models utilized in this research include AlexNet, ConvNeXt, EfficientNet, ResNet-50, and VisionTransformer were trained and tested using an extensive dataset comprising over 87,000 images of the ASL alphabet hand gestures. Numerous experiments were conducted, involving modifications to the architectural design parameters of the models to obtain maximum recognition accuracy. The experimental results of our study revealed that ResNet-50 achieved an exceptional accuracy rate of 99.98%, the highest among all models. EfficientNet attained an accuracy rate of 99.95%, ConvNeXt achieved 99.51% accuracy, AlexNet attained 99.50% accuracy, while VisionTransformer yielded the lowest accuracy of 88.59%. The emergence of Industry 4.0 has revolutionized the industrial sector, enabling the development of compact, precise, and interconnected assets. This transformation has not only generated vast amounts of data but also facilitated the migration of learning and optimization processes to edge devices. Consequently, modern industries can effectively leverage this paradigm through distributed learning to define product quality and implement predictive maintenance (PM) strategies. While computing speeds continue to advance rapidly, the latency in communication has emerged as a bottleneck for fast edge learning, particularly in time-sensitive applications such as PM. To address this issue, we explore Federated Learning (FL), a privacy-preserving framework. FL entails updating a global AI model on a parameter server (PS) through aggregation of locally trained models from edge devices. We propose an innovative approach: analog aggregation over-the-air of updates transmitted concurrently over wireless channels. This leverages the waveform-superposition property in multi-access channels, significantly reducing communication latency compared to conventional methods. However, it is vulnerable to performance degradation due to channel properties like noise and fading. In this study, we introduce a method to mitigate the impact of channel noise in FL over-the-air communication and computation (FLOACC). We integrate a novel tracking-based stochastic approximation scheme into a standard federated stochastic variance reduced gradient (FSVRG). This effectively averages out channel noise's influence, ensuring robust FLOACC performance without increasing transmission power gain. Numerical results confirm our approach's superior communication efficiency and scalability in various FL scenarios, especially when dealing with noisy channels.
