This paper proposes a new fault diagnosis method for centrifugal pumps by combining signal processing with deep learning techniques. Centrifugal pumps facilitate fluid transport through the energy generated by the impeller. Throughout the operation, variations in the fluid pressure at the pump's inlet may impact the generalization of traditional machine learning models trained on raw statistical features. To address this concern, first, vibration signals are collected from centrifugal pumps, followed by the application of a lowpass filter to isolate frequencies indicative of faults. These signals are then subjected to a continuous wavelet transform and Stockwell transform, generating two distinct time–frequency scalograms. The Sobel filter is employed to further highlight essential features within these scalograms. For feature extraction, this approach employs two parallel convolutional autoencoders, each tailored for a specific scalogram type. Subsequently, extracted features are merged into a unified feature pool, which forms the basis for training a two-layer artificial neural network, with the aim of achieving accurate fault classification. The proposed method is validated using three distinct datasets obtained from the centrifugal pump under varying inlet fluid pressures. Myocardial Infarction (MI), commonly known as heart attack, is a cardiac condition characterized by damage to a portion of the heart, specifically the myocardium, due to the disruption of blood flow. Given its recurring and often asymptomatic nature, there is the need for continuous monitoring using wearable devices. This paper proposes a single-microcontroller-based system designed for the automatic detection of MI based on the Edge Computing paradigm. Two solutions for MI detection are evaluated, based on Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) techniques. The developed algorithms are based on two different approaches currently available in the literature, and they are optimized for deployment on low-resource hardware. A feasibility assessment of their implementation on a single 32-bit microcontroller with an ARM Cortex-M4 core was examined, and a comparison in terms of accuracy, inference time, and memory usage was detailed. For ML techniques, significant data processing for feature extraction, coupled with a simpler Neural Network (NN) is involved. On the other hand, the second method, based on DL, employs a Spectrogram Analysis for feature extraction and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with a longer inference time and higher memory utilization. Both methods employ the same low power hardware reaching an accuracy of 89.40% and 94.76%, respectively. The final prototype is an energy-efficient system capable of real-time detection of MI without the need to connect to remote servers or the cloud. A significant majority of the population in India makes their living through agriculture. Different illnesses that develop due to changing weather patterns and are caused by pathogenic organisms impact the yields of diverse plant species. The present article analyzed some of the existing techniques in terms of data sources, pre-processing techniques, feature extraction techniques, data augmentation techniques, models utilized for detecting and classifying diseases that affect the plant, how the quality of images was enhanced, how overfitting of the model was reduced, and accuracy. The research papers for this study were selected using various keywords from peer-reviewed publications from various databases published between 2010 and 2022. A total of 182 papers were identified and reviewed for their direct relevance to plant disease detection and classification, of which 75 papers were selected for this review after exclusion based on the title, abstract, conclusion, and full text. Autonomous vehicles have become a topic of interest in recent times due to the rapid advancement of automobile and computer vision technology. In this paper, the performance of machine learning methods for squirrel cage induction motor broken rotor bar (BRB) fault detection is evaluated. Decision tree classification (DTC), artificial neural network (ANN), and deep learning (DL) methods are developed, applied, and studied to compare their performance in detecting broken rotor bar faults in squirrel cage induction motors. The training data were collected through experimental measurements. The BRB fault features were extracted from measured line-current signatures through a transformation from the time domain to the frequency domain using discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) of the frequency spectrum of the current signal. Eighty percent of the data were used for training the models, and twenty percent were used for testing. A confusion matrix was used to validate the models' performance using accuracy, precision, recall, and f1-scores. The results evidence that the DTC is less load-dependent, and it has better accuracy and precision for both unloaded and loaded squirrel cage induction motors when compared with the DL and ANN methods. The DTC method achieved higher accuracy in the detection of the magnitudes of the twice-frequency sideband components induced in stator currents by BRB faults when compared with the DL and ANN methods. Although the detection accuracy and precision are higher for the loaded motor than the unloaded motor, the DTC method managed to also exhibit a high accuracy for the unloaded current when compared with the DL and ANN methods. The DTC is, therefore, a suitable candidate to detect broken rotor bar faults on trained data for lightly or thoroughly loaded squirrel cage induction motors using the characteristics of the measured line-current signature. Text summarization is an information compression technology to extract important information from long text, which has become a challenging research direction in the field of natural language processing. At present, the text summary model based on deep learning has shown good results, but how to more effectively model the relationship between words, more accurately extract feature information and eliminate redundant information is still a problem of concern. This paper proposes a graph neural network model GA-GNN based on gated attention, which effectively improves the accuracy and readability of text summarization. First, the words are encoded using a concatenated sentence encoder to generate a deeper vector containing local and global semantic information. Secondly, the ability to extract key information features is improved by using gated attention units to eliminate local irrelevant information. Finally, the loss function is optimized from the three aspects of contrastive learning, confidence calculation of important sentences, and graph feature extraction to improve the robustness of the model. Extracting high-accuracy landslide areas using deep learning methods from high spatial resolution remote sensing images is a hot topic in current research. However, the existing deep learning algorithms are affected by background noise and landslide scale effects during the extraction process, leading to poor feature extraction effects. To address this issue, this paper proposes an improved mask regions-based convolutional neural network (Mask R-CNN) model to identify the landslide distribution in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) images. The improvement of the model mainly includes three aspects: (1) an attention mechanism of the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) is added to the backbone residual neural network (ResNet). (2) A bottom-up channel is added to the feature pyramidal network (FPN) module. (3) The region proposal network (RPN) is replaced by guided anchoring (GA-RPN). Sanming City, China was selected as the study area for the experiments. The experimental results show that the improved model has a recall of 91.4% and an accuracy of 92.6%, which is 12.9% and 10.9% higher than the original Mask R-CNN model, respectively, indicating that the improved model is more effective in landslide extraction. With the growing diversity of cyberattacks in recent years, anomaly-based intrusion detection systems that can detect unknown attacks have attracted significant attention. Furthermore, a wide range of studies on anomaly detection using machine learning and deep learning methods have been conducted. However, many machine learning and deep learning-based methods require significant effort to design the detection feature values, extract the feature values from network packets, and acquire the labeled data used for model training. To solve the aforementioned problems, this paper proposes a new model called DOC-IDS, which is an intrusion detection system based on Perera's deep one-class classification. The DOC-IDS, which comprises a pair of one-dimensional convolutional neural networks and an autoencoder, uses three different loss functions for training. Although, in general, only regular traffic from the computer network subject to detection is used for anomaly detection training, the DOC-IDS also uses multi-class labeled traffic from open datasets for feature extraction. Therefore, by streamlining the classification task on multi-class labeled traffic, we can obtain a feature representation with highly enhanced data discrimination abilities. Simultaneously, we perform variance minimization in the feature space, even on regular traffic, to further improve the model's ability to discriminate between normal and abnormal traffic. The DOC-IDS is a single deep learning model that can automatically perform feature extraction and anomaly detection. This paper also reports experiments for evaluating the anomaly detection performance of the DOC-IDS. Speaker Recognition (SR) is a common task in AI-based sound analysis, involving structurally different methodologies such as Deep Learning or "traditional" Machine Learning (ML). In this paper, we compared and explored the two methodologies on the DEMoS dataset consisting of 8869 audio files of 58 speakers in different emotional states. A custom CNN is compared to several pre-trained nets using image inputs of spectrograms and Cepstral-temporal (MFCC) graphs. AML approach based on acoustic feature extraction, selection and multi-class classification by means of a Naïve Bayes model is also considered. Results show how a custom, less deep CNN trained on grayscale spectrogram images obtain the most accurate results, 90.15% on grayscale spectrograms and 83.17% on colored MFCC. AlexNet provides comparable results, reaching 89.28% on spectrograms and 83.43% on MFCC.The Naïve Bayes classifier provides a 87.09% accuracy and a 0.985 average AUC while being faster to train and more interpretable. Feature selection shows how F0, MFCC and voicing-related features are the most characterizing for this SR task. The high amount of training samples and the emotional content of the DEMoS dataset better reflect a real case scenario for speaker recognition, and account for the generalization power of the models. The performance of human gait recognition (HGR) is affected by the partial obstruction of the human body caused by the limited field of view in video surveillance. The traditional method required the bounding box to recognize human gait in the video sequences accurately; however, it is a challenging and time-consuming approach. Due to important applications, such as biometrics and video surveillance, HGR has improved performance over the last half-decade. Based on the literature, the challenging covariant factors that degrade gait recognition performance include walking while wearing a coat or carrying a bag. This paper proposed a new two-stream deep learning framework for human gait recognition. The first step proposed a contrast enhancement technique based on the local and global filters information fusion. The high-boost operation is finally applied to highlight the human region in a video frame. Data augmentation is performed in the second step to increase the dimension of the preprocessed dataset (CASIA-B). In the third step, two pre-trained deep learning models—MobilenetV2 and ShuffleNet—are fine-tuned and trained on the augmented dataset using deep transfer learning. Features are extracted from the global average pooling layer instead of the fully connected layer. In the fourth step, extracted features of both streams are fused using a serial-based approach and further refined in the fifth step by using an improved equilibrium state optimization-controlled Newton–Raphson (ESOcNR) selection method. The selected features are finally classified using machine learning algorithms for the final classification accuracy. The experimental process was conducted on 8 angles of the CASIA-B dataset and obtained an accuracy of 97.3, 98.6, 97.7, 96.5, 92.9, 93.7, 94.7, and 91.2%, respectively. Recently, the scientific community has placed great emphasis on the recognition of human activity, especially in the area of health and care for the elderly. There are already practical applications of activity recognition and unusual conditions that use body sensors such as wrist-worn devices or neck pendants. These relatively simple devices may be prone to errors, might be uncomfortable to wear, might be forgotten or not worn, and are unable to detect more subtle conditions such as incorrect postures. Therefore, other proposed methods are based on the use of images and videos to carry out human activity recognition, even in open spaces and with multiple people. However, the resulting increase in the size and complexity involved when using image data requires the use of the most recent advanced machine learning and deep learning techniques. This paper presents an approach based on deep learning with attention to the recognition of activities from multiple frames. Feature extraction is performed by estimating the pose of the human skeleton, and classification is performed using a neural network based on Bidirectional Encoder Representation of Transformers (BERT). This algorithm was trained with the UP-Fall public dataset, generating more balanced artificial data with a Generative Adversarial Neural network (GAN), and evaluated with real data, outperforming the results of other activity recognition methods using the same dataset. Defects or cracks in roads, building walls, floors, and product surfaces can degrade the completeness of the product and become an impediment to quality control. Machine learning can be a solution for detecting defects effectively without human experts; however, the low-power computing device cannot afford that. In this paper, we suggest a crack detection system accelerated by edge computing. Our system consists of two: Rsef and Rsef-Edge. Rsef is a real-time segmentation method based on effective feature extraction that can perform crack image segmentation by optimizing conventional deep learning models. Then, we construct the edge-based system, named Rsef-Edge, to significantly decrease the inference time of Rsef, even in low-power IoT devices. Indoor 3D positioning is useful in multistory buildings, such as shopping malls, libraries, and airports. This study focuses on indoor 3D positioning using wireless access points (AP) in an environment without adding additional hardware facilities in large-scale complex places. The integration of a deep learning algorithm into indoor 3D positioning is studied, and a 3D dynamic positioning model based on temporal fingerprints is proposed. In contrast to the traditional positioning models with a single input, the proposed method uses a sliding time window to build a temporal fingerprint chip as the input of the positioning model to provide abundant information for positioning. Temporal information can be used to distinguish locations with similar fingerprint vectors and to improve the accuracy and robustness of positioning. Moreover, deep learning has been applied for the automatic extraction of spatiotemporal features. A temporal convolutional network (TCN) feature extractor is proposed in this paper, which adopts a causal convolution mechanism, dilated convolution mechanism, and residual connection mechanism and is not limited by the size of the convolution kernel. It is capable of learning hidden information and spatiotemporal relationships from the input features and the extracted spatiotemporal features are connected with a deep neural network (DNN) regressor to fit the complex nonlinear mapping relationship between the features and position coordinates to estimate the 3D position coordinates of the target. Finally, an open-source public dataset was used to verify the performance of the localization algorithm. Experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed positioning model and a comparison between the proposed model and existing models proved that the proposed model can provide more accurate three-dimensional position coordinates. Domestic trash detection is an essential technology toward achieving a smart city. Due to the complexity and variability of urban trash scenarios, the existing trash detection algorithms suffer from low detection rates and high false positives, as well as the general problem of slow speed in industrial applications. This paper proposes an i-YOLOX model for domestic trash detection based on deep learning algorithms. First, a large number of real-life trash images are collected into a new trash image dataset. Second, the lightweight operator involution is incorporated into the feature extraction structure of the algorithm, which allows the feature extraction layer to establish long-distance feature relationships and adaptively extract channel features. In addition, the ability of the model to distinguish similar trash features is strengthened by adding the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) to the enhanced feature extraction network. Finally, the design of the involution residual head structure in the detection head reduces the gradient disappearance and accelerates the convergence of the model loss values allowing the model to perform better classification and regression of the acquired feature layers. In this study, YOLOX-S is chosen as the baseline for each enhancement experiment. The experimental results show that compared with the baseline algorithm, the mean average precision (mAP) of i-YOLOX is improved by 1.47%, the number of parameters is reduced by 23.3%, and the FPS is improved by 40.4%. In practical applications, this improved model achieves accurate recognition of trash in natural scenes, which further validates the generalization performance of i-YOLOX and provides a reference for future domestic trash detection research. Cardiac arrhythmias pose a significant danger to human life; therefore, it is of utmost importance to be able to efficiently diagnose these arrhythmias promptly. There exist many techniques for the detection of arrhythmias; however, the most widely adopted method is the use of an Electrocardiogram (ECG). The manual analysis of ECGs by medical experts is often inefficient. Therefore, the detection and recognition of ECG characteristics via machine-learning techniques have become prevalent. There are two major drawbacks of existing machine-learning approaches: (a) they require extensive training time; and (b) they require manual feature selection. To address these issues, this paper presents a novel deep-learning framework that integrates various networks by stacking similar layers in each network to produce a single robust model. The proposed framework has been tested on two publicly available datasets for the recognition of five micro-classes of arrhythmias. The overall classification sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and accuracy of the proposed approach are 98.37%, 99.59%, 98.41%, and 99.35%, respectively. The results are compared with state-of-the-art approaches. Identifying accident patterns is one of the most vital research foci of driving analysis. Environmental or safety applications and the growing area of fleet management all benefit from accident detection contributions by minimizing the risk vehicles and drivers are subject to, improving their service and reducing overhead costs. Some solutions have been proposed in the past literature for automated accident detection that are mainly based on traffic data or external sensors. However, traffic data can be difficult to access, while external sensors can end up being difficult to set up and unreliable, depending on how they are used. Additionally, the scarcity of accident detection data has limited the type of approaches used in the past, leaving in particular, machine learning (ML) relatively unexplored. Thus, in this paper, we propose a ML framework for automated car accident detection based on mutimodal in-car sensors. Our work is a unique and innovative study on detecting real-world driving accidents by applying state-of-the-art feature extraction methods using basic sensors in cars. In total, five different feature extraction approaches, including techniques based on feature engineering and feature learning with deep learning are evaluated on the strategic highway research program (SHRP2) naturalistic driving study (NDS) crash data set. The main observations of this study are as follows: (1) CNN features with a SVM classifier obtain very promising results, outperforming all other tested approaches. (2) Feature engineering and feature learning approaches were finding different best performing features. Therefore, our fusion experiment indicates that these two feature sets can be efficiently combined. (3) Unsupervised feature extraction remarkably achieves a notable performance score. In aerospace, marine, and other heavy industries, bearing fault diagnosis has been an essential part of improving machine life, reducing economic losses, and avoiding safety problems caused by machine bearing failures. Most existing bearing fault diagnosis methods face challenges in extracting the fault features from raw bearing fault data. Compared with traditional methods for bearing fault characteristics extraction, deep neural networks can automatically extract intrinsic features without expert knowledge. The convolutional neural network (CNN) was utilized most widely in extracting representative features of bearing faults. Fundamental to this, the hybrid models based on the CNN and individual classifiers were proposed to diagnose bearing faults. However, CNN may not be suitable for all bearing fault classifiers. It is crucial to identify the classifiers which can maximize the CNN feature extraction ability. In this paper, four hybrid models based on CNN were built, and their fault detection accuracy and efficiency were compared. A novel radar high-resolution range profile (HRRP) target recognition method based on a stacked autoencoder (SAE) and extreme learning machine (ELM) is presented in this paper. As a key component of deep structure, the SAE does not only learn features by making use of data, it also obtains feature expressions at different levels of data. However, with the deep structure, it is hard to achieve good generalization performance with a fast learning speed. ELM, as a new learning algorithm for single hidden layer feedforward neural networks (SLFNs), has attracted great interest from various fields for its fast learning speed and good generalization performance. However, ELM needs more hidden nodes than conventional tuning-based learning algorithms due to the random set of input weights and hidden biases. In addition, the existing ELM methods cannot utilize the class information of targets well. To solve this problem, a regularized ELM method based on the class information of the target is proposed. In this paper, SAE and the regularized ELM are combined to make full use of their advantages and make up for each of their shortcomings. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by experiments with measured radar HRRP data. The experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve good performance in the two aspects of real-time and accuracy, especially when only a few training samples are available. Adopting deep learning methods for human activity recognition has been effective in extracting discriminative features from raw input sequences acquired from body-worn sensors. Although human movements are encoded in a sequence of successive samples in time, typical machine learning methods perform recognition tasks without exploiting the temporal correlations between input data samples. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) address this issue by using convolutions across a one-dimensional temporal sequence to capture dependencies among input data. However, the size of convolutional kernels restricts the captured range of dependencies between data samples. As a result, typical models are unadaptable to a wide range of activity-recognition configurations and require fixed-length input windows. In this paper, we propose the use of deep recurrent neural networks (DRNNs) for building recognition models that are capable of capturing long-range dependencies in variable-length input sequences. We present unidirectional, bidirectional, and cascaded architectures based on long short-term memory (LSTM) DRNNs and evaluate their effectiveness on miscellaneous benchmark datasets. Experimental results show that our proposed models outperform methods employing conventional machine learning, such as support vector machine (SVM) and k-nearest neighbors (KNN). Information and communication technologies have essential impacts on people's life. The real time convenience of the internet greatly facilitates the information transmission and knowledge exchange of users. However, network intruders utilize some communication holes to complete malicious attacks. Some traditional machine learning (ML) methods based on business features and deep learning (DL) methods extracting features automatically are used to identify these malicious behaviors. However, these approaches tend to use only one type of data source, which can result in the loss of some features that can not be mined in the data. In order to address this problem and to improve the precision of malicious behavior detection, this paper proposed a one-dimensional (1D) convolution-based fusion model of packet capture files and business feature data for malicious network behavior detection. Fusion models improve the malicious behavior detection results compared with single ones in some available network traffic and Internet of things (IOT) datasets. The experiments also indicate that early data fusion, feature fusion and decision fusion are all effective in the model. The variation in skin textures and injuries, as well as the detection and classification of skin cancer, is a difficult task. Manually detecting skin lesions from dermoscopy images is a difficult and time-consuming process. Recent advancements in the domains of the internet of things (IoT) and artificial intelligence for medical applications demonstrated improvements in both accuracy and computational time. In this paper, a new method for multiclass skin lesion classification using best deep learning feature fusion and an extreme learning machine is proposed. The proposed method includes five primary steps: image acquisition and contrast enhancement; deep learning feature extraction using transfer learning; best feature selection using hybrid whale optimization and entropy-mutual information (EMI) approach; fusion of selected features using a modified canonical correlation based approach; and, finally, extreme learning machine based classification. The feature selection step improves the system's computational efficiency and accuracy. The experiment is carried out on two publicly available datasets, HAM10000 and ISIC2018. The achieved accuracy on both datasets is 93.40 and 94.36 percent. When compared to state-of-the-art (SOTA) techniques, the proposed method's accuracy is improved. The existing classification methods for Panax notoginseng taproots suffer from low accuracy, low efficiency, and poor stability. In this study, a classification model based on image feature fusion is established for Panax notoginseng taproots. The images of Panax notoginseng taproots collected in the experiment are preprocessed by Gaussian filtering, binarization, and morphological methods. Then, a total of 40 features are extracted, including size and shape features, HSV and RGB color features, and texture features. Through BP neural network, extreme learning machine (ELM), and support vector machine (SVM) models, the importance of color, texture, and fusion features for the classification of the main roots of Panax notoginseng is verified. Among the three models, the SVM model performs the best, achieving an accuracy of 92.037% on the prediction set. Next, iterative retaining information variables (IRIVs), variable iterative space shrinkage approach (VISSA), and stepwise regression analysis (SRA) are used to reduce the dimension of all the features. Finally, a traditional machine learning SVM model based on feature selection and a deep learning model based on semantic segmentation are established. With the model size of only 125 kb and the training time of 3.4 s, the IRIV-SVM model achieves an accuracy of 95.370% on the test set, so IRIV-SVM is selected as the main root classification model for Panax notoginseng. After being optimized by the gray wolf optimizer, the IRIV-GWO-SVM model achieves the highest classification accuracy of 98.704% on the test set. Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is a promising new technology for pipeline monitoring and protection. However, a big challenge is distinguishing between relevant events, like intrusion by an excavator near the pipeline, and interference, like land machines. This paper investigates whether it is possible to achieve adequate detection accuracy with classic machine learning algorithms using simulations and real system implementation. Then, we compare classical machine learning with a deep learning approach and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of both approaches. Although acceptable performance can be achieved with both approaches, preliminary results show that deep learning is the more promising approach, eliminating the need for laborious feature extraction and offering a six times lower event detection delay and twelve times lower execution time. However, we achieved the best results by combining deep learning with the knowledge-based and classical machine learning approaches. A growing number of smart wearable biosensors are operating in the medical IoT environment and those that capture physiological signals have received special attention. Electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the physiological signals used in the cardiovascular and medical fields that has encouraged researchers to discover new non-invasive methods to diagnose hyperglycemia as a personal variable. Over the years, researchers have proposed different techniques to detect hyperglycemia using ECG. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning architecture that can identify hyperglycemia using heartbeats from ECG signals. In addition, we introduce a new fiducial feature extraction technique that improves the performance of the deep learning classifier. We evaluate the proposed method with ECG data from 1119 different subjects to assess the efficiency of hyperglycemia detection of the proposed work. The result indicates that the proposed algorithm is effective in detecting hyperglycemia with a 94.53% area under the curve (AUC), 87.57% sensitivity, and 85.04% specificity. That performance represents an relative improvement of 53% versus the best model found in the literature. The high sensitivity and specificity achieved by the 10-layer deep neural network proposed in this work provide an excellent indication that ECG possesses intrinsic information that can indicate the level of blood glucose concentration. Mental stress is one of the serious factors that lead to many health problems. Scientists and physicians have developed various tools to assess the level of mental stress in its early stages. Several neuroimaging tools have been proposed in the literature to assess mental stress in the workplace. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal is one important candidate because it contains rich information about mental states and condition. In this paper, we review the existing EEG signal analysis methods on the assessment of mental stress. The review highlights the critical differences between the research findings and argues that variations of the data analysis methods contribute to several contradictory results. The variations in results could be due to various factors including lack of standardized protocol, the brain region of interest, stressor type, experiment duration, proper EEG processing, feature extraction mechanism, and type of classifier. Therefore, the significant part related to mental stress recognition is choosing the most appropriate features. In particular, a complex and diverse range of EEG features, including time-varying, functional, and dynamic brain connections, requires integration of various methods to understand their associations with mental stress. Accordingly, the review suggests fusing the cortical activations with the connectivity network measures and deep learning approaches to improve the accuracy of mental stress level assessment. While even the most common definition of pain is under debate, pain assessment has remained the same for decades. But the paramount importance of precise pain management for successful healthcare has encouraged initiatives to improve the way pain is assessed. Recent approaches have proposed automatic pain evaluation systems using machine learning models trained with data coming from behavioural or physiological sensors. Although yielding promising results, machine learning studies for sensor-based pain recognition remain scattered and not necessarily easy to compare to each other. In particular, the important process of extracting features is usually optimised towards specific datasets. We thus introduce a comparison of feature extraction methods for pain recognition based on physiological sensors in this paper. In addition, the PainMonit Database (PMDB), a new dataset including both objective and subjective annotations for heat-induced pain in 52 subjects, is introduced. In total, five different approaches including techniques based on feature engineering and feature learning with deep learning are evaluated on the BioVid and PMDB datasets. Our studies highlight the following insights: (1) Simple feature engineering approaches can still compete with deep learning approaches in terms of performance. (2) More complex deep learning architectures do not yield better performance compared to simpler ones. Detecting drowsiness in drivers, especially multi-level drowsiness, is a difficult problem that is often approached using neurophysiological signals as the basis for building a reliable system. In this context, electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are the most important source of data to achieve successful detection. In this paper, we first review EEG signal features used in the literature for a variety of tasks, then we focus on reviewing the applications of EEG features and deep learning approaches in driver drowsiness detection, and finally we discuss the open challenges and opportunities in improving driver drowsiness detection based on EEG. We show that the number of studies on driver drowsiness detection systems has increased in recent years and that future systems need to consider the wide variety of EEG signal features and deep learning approaches to increase the accuracy of detection. To solve the problems of low accuracy, low real-time performance, poor robustness and others caused by the complex environment, this paper proposes a face mask recognition and standard wear detection algorithm based on the improved YOLO-v4. Firstly, an improved CSPDarkNet53 is introduced into the trunk feature extraction network, which reduces the computing cost of the network and improves the learning ability of the model. Secondly, the adaptive image scaling algorithm can reduce computation and redundancy effectively. Thirdly, the improved PANet structure is introduced so that the network has more semantic information in the feature layer. At last, a face mask detection data set is made according to the standard wearing of masks. Based on the object detection algorithm of deep learning, a variety of evaluation indexes are compared to evaluate the effectiveness of the model. The results of the comparations show that the mAP of face mask recognition can reach 98.3% and the frame rate is high at 54.57 FPS, which are more accurate compared with the exiting algorithm. In this paper, a Deep Learning approach is proposed to classify impact data based on the type of impact (Hard or Soft Impacts), via obtaining voltage signals from Piezo-Electric sensors, mounted on a composite panel. The data is processed further to be classified based on their energy, location and material. Minimalistic and Automated feature extraction and selection is achieved via a deep learning algorithm. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) are employed to extract and select important features from the voltage data. Once features are selected the impacts, are classified based on either, Hard Impacts (simulated from steel impactors in a lab setting), Soft Impacts (simulated from silicon impactors in a lab setting) and their corresponding location and energy levels. Furthermore, in order to use the right data for training they are obtained from the signals as anomalies via Isolation Forests (IF) to speed up the process. The aim of the study is to compare electroencephalographic (EEG) signal feature extraction methods in the context of the effectiveness of the classification of brain activities. For classification, electroencephalographic signals were obtained using an EEG device from 17 subjects in three mental states (relaxation, excitation, and solving logical task). Blind source separation employing independent component analysis (ICA) was performed on obtained signals. Welch's method, autoregressive modeling, and discrete wavelet transform were used for feature extraction. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed in order to reduce the dimensionality of feature vectors. k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and Neural Networks (NN) were employed for classification. Recently, modern smartphones equipped with a variety of embedded-sensors, such as accelerometers and gyroscopes, have been used as an alternative platform for human activity recognition (HAR), since they are cost-effective, unobtrusive and they facilitate real-time applications. However, the majority of the related works have proposed a position-dependent HAR, i.e., the target subject has to fix the smartphone in a pre-defined position. Few studies have tackled the problem of position-independent HAR. They have tackled the problem either using handcrafted features that are less influenced by the position of the smartphone or by building a position-aware HAR. The performance of these studies still needs more improvement to produce a reliable smartphone-based HAR. Thus, in this paper, we propose a deep convolution neural network model that provides a robust position-independent HAR system. We build and evaluate the performance of the proposed model using the RealWorld HAR public dataset. We find that our deep learning proposed model increases the overall performance compared to the state-of-the-art traditional machine learning method from 84% to 88% for position-independent HAR. In addition, the position detection performance of our model improves superiorly from 89% to 98%. Machine fault diagnosis (MFD) has gained an important enthusiasm since the unfolding of the pattern recognition techniques in the last three decades. It refers to all of the studies that aim to automatically detect the faults on the machines using various kinds of signals that they can generate. The present work proposes a MFD system for the drilling machines that is based on the sounds they produce. The first key contribution of this paper is to present a system specifically designed for the drills, by attempting not only to detect the faulty drills but also to detect whether the sounds were generated during the active or the idling stage of the whole machinery system, in order to provide a complete remote control. The second key contribution of the work is to represent the power spectrum of the sounds as images and apply some transformations on them in order to reveal, expose, and emphasize the health patterns that are hidden inside them. The created images, the so-called power spectrum density (PSD)-images, are then given to a deep convolutional autoencoder (DCAE) for a high-level feature extraction process. The final step of the scheme consists of adopting the proposed PSD-images + DCAE features as the final representation of the original sounds and utilize them as the inputs of a nonlinear classifier whose outputs will represent the final diagnosis decision. The results of the experiments demonstrate the high discrimination potential afforded by the proposed PSD-images + DCAE features.
