Real-Time Kinematic Global Navigation Satellite System (RTK-GNSS) is currently the premier technique for achieving centimeter-level accuracy quickly and easily. However, the robustness of RTK-GNSS diminishes in challenging environments due to severe multipath effects and a limited number of available GNSS signals. This is a pressing issue, especially for GNSS users in the navigation industry. This paper proposes and evaluates several methodologies designed to overcome these issues by enhancing the availability and reliability of RTK-GNSS solutions in urban environments. Our novel approach involves the integration of conventional methods with a new technique that leverages surplus satellites—those not initially used for positioning—to more reliably detect incorrect fix solutions. We conducted three tests in densely built-up areas within the Tokyo region. The results demonstrate that our approach not only surpasses the fix rate of the latest commercial receivers and a popular open-source RTK-GNSS program but also improves positional reliability to levels comparable to or exceeding those of the aforementioned commercial technology. The determination of a mobile terminal's position with high accuracy and ubiquitous coverage is still challenging. Global satellite navigation systems (GNSSs) provide sufficient accuracy in areas with a clear view to the sky. For GNSS-denied environments like indoors, complementary positioning technologies are required. A promising approach is to use the Earth's magnetic field for positioning. In open areas, the Earth's magnetic field is almost homogeneous, which makes it possible to determine the orientation of a mobile device using a compass. In more complex environments like indoors, ferromagnetic materials cause distortions of the Earth's magnetic field. A compass usually fails in such areas. However, these magnetic distortions are location dependent and therefore can be used for positioning. In this paper, we investigate the influence of elementary structures, in particular a sphere and a cylinder, on the achievable accuracy of magnetic positioning methods. In a first step, we analytically calculate the magnetic field around a sphere and a cylinder in an outer homogeneous magnetic field. Assuming a noisy magnetic field sensor, we investigate the achievable positioning accuracy when observing these resulting fields. For our analysis, we calculate the Cramér–Rao lower bound, which is a fundamental lower bound on the variance of an unbiased estimator. The results of our investigations show the dependency of the positioning error variance on the magnetic sensor properties, in particular the sensor noise variance and the material properties, i.e., the relative permeability of the sphere with respect to the cylinder and the location of the sensor relative to the sphere with respect to the cylinder. This paper proposes a new sensor using optical flow to stabilize a quadrotor when a GPS signal is not available. Normally, optical flow varies with the attitude of the aerial vehicle. This produces positive feedback on the attitude control that destabilizes the orientation of the vehicle. To avoid this, we propose a novel sensor using an optical flow camera with a 6DoF IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) mounted on a two-axis anti-shake stabilizer mobile aerial gimbal. We also propose a robust algorithm based on Sliding Mode Control for stabilizing the optical flow sensor downwards independently of the aerial vehicle attitude. This method improves the estimation of the position and velocity of the quadrotor. We present experimental results to show the performance of the proposed sensor and algorithms. In this paper, an adaptive and robust Kalman filter algorithm based on the maximum correntropy criterion (MCC) is proposed to solve the problem of integrated navigation accuracy reduction, which is caused by the non-Gaussian noise and time-varying noise of GPS measurement in complex environment. Firstly, the Grubbs criterion was used to remove outliers, which are contained in the GPS measurement. Then, a fixed-length sliding window was used to estimate the decay factor adaptively. Based on the fixed-length sliding window method, the time-varying noises, which are considered in integrated navigation system, are addressed. Moreover, a MCC method is used to suppress the non-Gaussian noises, which are generated with external corruption. Finally, the method, which is proposed in this paper, is verified by the designed simulation and field tests. The results show that the influence of the non-Gaussian noise and time-varying noise of the GPS measurement is detected and isolated by the proposed algorithm, effectively. Embedding various sensors with powerful computing and storage capabilities in a small communication device, smartphones have become a prominent platform for navigation. With the increasing popularity of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, smartphones are quickly replacing built-in automotive navigation solutions. On the other hand, smartphones are equipped with low-performance Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) sensors to enhance their navigation performance in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-degraded or -denied environments. Compared with higher-grade inertial navigation systems (INS), MEMS-based INSs have a poor navigation performance due to large measurement errors. In this paper, we present laboratory test results on the stochastic and deterministic errors observed in MEMS inertial sensor measurements of five different smartphones from different manufacturers. Then, we describe and discuss the short-term effects of these errors on the pure inertial navigation performance and also on the navigation performance based on the tight coupling of INS with GNSS measurements using a smartphone. This paper proposes a novel Blockchain-based indoor navigation system that combines a foot-mounted dual-inertial measurement unit (IMU) setup and a zero-velocity update (ZUPT) algorithm for secure and accurate indoor navigation in GNSS-denied environments. The system estimates the user's position and orientation by fusing the data from two IMUs using an extended Kalman filter (EKF). The ZUPT algorithm is employed to detect and correct the error introduced by sensor drift during zero-velocity intervals, thus enhancing the accuracy of the position estimate. The proposed Low SWaP-C blockchain-based decentralized architecture ensures the security and trustworthiness of the system by providing an immutable and distributed ledger to store and verify the sensor data and navigation solutions. The proposed system is suitable for various indoor navigation applications, including autonomous vehicles, robots, and human tracking. The experimental results provide clear and compelling evidence of the effectiveness of the proposed system in ensuring the integrity, privacy, and security of navigation data through the utilization of blockchain technology. The system exhibits an impressive ability to process more than 680 transactions per second within the Hyperledger-Fabric framework. Furthermore, it demonstrates exceptional accuracy and robustness, with a mean RMSE error of 1.2 m and a peak RMSE of 3.2 during a 20 min test. By eliminating the reliance on external signals or infrastructure, the system offers an innovative, practical, and secure solution for indoor navigation in environments where GNSS signals are unavailable. High-precision navigation solutions are a main requirement for autonomous vehicle (AV) applications. Global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) are the prime source of navigation information for such applications. However, some places such as tunnels, underpasses, inside parking garages, and urban high-rise buildings suffer from GNSS signal degradation or unavailability. Therefore, another system is required to provide a continuous navigation solution, such as the inertial navigation system (INS). The vehicle's onboard inertial measuring unit (IMU) is the main INS input measurement source. However, the INS solution drifts over time due to IMU-associated errors and the mechanization process itself. Therefore, INS/GNSS integration is the proper solution for both systems' drawbacks. Traditionally, a linearized Kalman filter (LKF) such as the extended Kalman filter (EKF) is utilized as a navigation filter. The EKF deals only with the linearized errors and suppresses the higher orders using the Taylor expansion up to the first order. This paper introduces a loosely coupled INS/GNSS integration scheme using the invariant extended Kalman filter (IEKF). The IEKF state estimate is independent of the Jacobians that are derived in the EKF; instead, it uses the matrix Lie group. The proposed INS/GNSS integration using IEKF is applied to a real road trajectory for performance validation. The results show a significant enhancement when using the proposed system compared to the traditional INS/GNSS integrated system that uses EKF in both GNSS signal presence and blockage cases. The overall trajectory 2D-position RMS error reduced from 19.4 m to 3.3 m with 82.98 % improvement and the 2D-position max error reduced from 73.9 m to 14.2 m with 80.78 % improvement. This paper presents the performance analysis of CentiSpace low earth orbit (LEO) experiment satellites. Distinguishing them from other LEO navigation augmentation systems, the co-time and co-frequency (CCST) self-interference suppression technique is employed in CentiSpace to mitigate significant self-interference caused by augmentation signals. Consequently, CentiSpace exhibits the capability of receiving navigation signals from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) while simultaneously broadcasting augmentation signals within the same frequency bands, thus ensuring excellent compatibility for GNSS receivers. CentiSpace is a pioneering LEO navigation system to successfully complete in-orbit verification of this technique. Leveraging the on-board experiment data, this study analyzes the performance of space-borne GNSS receivers equipped with self-interference suppression and evaluates the quality of navigation augmentation signals. The results show that CentiSpace space-borne GNSS receivers are capable of covering more than 90% visible GNSS satellites and the precision of self-orbit determination is at the centimeter level. Furthermore, the quality of augmentation signals meets the requirements outlined in the BDS interface control documents. These findings underscore the potential of the CentiSpace LEO augmentation system for the establishment of global integrity monitoring and GNSS signal augmentation. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the impact of the increasing number of measurements and the possible increase in the number of faults in multi-constellation Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RAIM). Residual-based fault detection and integrity monitoring techniques are ubiquitous in linear over-determined sensing systems. An important application is RAIM, as used in multi-constellation GNSS-based positioning. This is a field in which the number of measurements, m, available per epoch is rapidly increasing due to new satellite systems and modernization. Spoofing, multipath, and non-line of sight signals could potentially affect a large number of these signals. This article fully characterizes the impact of measurement faults on the estimation (i.e., position) error, the residual, and their ratio (i.e., the failure mode slope) by analyzing the range space of the measurement matrix and its orthogonal complement. For any fault scenario affecting h measurements, the eigenvalue problem that defines the worst-case fault is expressed and analyzed in terms of these orthogonal subspaces, which enables further analysis. For h > (m − n) , where n is the number of estimated variables, it is known that there always exist faults that are undetectable from the residual vector, yielding an infinite value for the failure mode slope. This article uses the range space and its complement to explain: (1) why, for fixed h and n, the failure mode slope decreases with m; (2) why, for a fixed n and m, the failure mode slope increases toward infinity as h increases; (3) why a failure mode slope can become infinite for h ≤ (m − n) . This paper introduces a new method which facilitate the use of smartphones as a handheld low-cost mobile mapping system (MMS). Smartphones are becoming more sophisticated and smarter and are quickly closing the gap between computers and portable tablet devices. The current generation of smartphones are equipped with low-cost GPS receivers, high-resolution digital cameras, and micro-electro mechanical systems (MEMS)-based navigation sensors (e.g., accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetic compasses, and barometers). These sensors are in fact the essential components for a MMS. However, smartphone navigation sensors suffer from the poor accuracy of global navigation satellite System (GNSS), accumulated drift, and high signal noise. These issues affect the accuracy of the initial Exterior Orientation Parameters (EOPs) that are inputted into the bundle adjustment algorithm, which then produces inaccurate 3D mapping solutions. This paper proposes new methodologies for increasing the accuracy of direct geo-referencing of smartphones using relative orientation and smartphone motion sensor measurements as well as integrating geometric scene constraints into free network bundle adjustment. The new methodologies incorporate fusing the relative orientations of the captured images and their corresponding motion sensor measurements to improve the initial EOPs. Then, the geometric features (e.g., horizontal and vertical linear lines) visible in each image are extracted and used as constraints in the bundle adjustment procedure which correct the relative position and orientation of the 3D mapping solution. The failure to detect anomalies and maneuvering of the orbits of navigation satellite sensors will deteriorate the performance of positioning and orbit determination. Motivated by the influence of the frequent maneuvering of BDS GEO and IGSO satellites, this paper analyzes the limitations of existing methods, where BDS orbit maneuvering and anomalies can be detected, and develops a method to solve this problem based on the RMS model of orbit mutual differences proposed in this paper. The performance of this method was assessed by comparison with the health flag of broadcast ephemeris, precise orbit products of GFZ, the O-C values of a GNSS station and a conventional method. The results show that the performance of the method developed in this paper is better than that of the conventional method when the periodicity and trend items are obvious. Meanwhile, three additional verification results show that the method developed in this paper can find error information in the merged broadcast ephemeris provided by iGMAS. Furthermore, from the testing results, it can be seen that the detection of anomaly and maneuvering items do not affect each other based on the robust thresholds constructed in this paper. In addition, the precise orbit of the maneuvering satellites can be determined under the circumstances that the maneuver information detected in this paper is used, and the root mean square (RMS) of orbit overlap comparison for GEO-03/IGSO-03 in Radial, Along, Cross, 1D-RMS are 0.7614/0.4460 m, 1.8901/0.3687 m, 0.3392/0.2069 m, 2.0657/0.6145 m, respectively. The Chinese BeiDou navigation satellite system (BDS) aims to provide global positioning service by 2020. The combined use of BDS and Global Positioning System (GPS) is proposed to provide navigation service with more stringent requirements. Actual satellite data, signals and measurements were collected for more than one month to analyze the positioning service qualities from both BDS and GPS. In addition to the conversions of coordinate and timing system, five data quality analysis (DQA) methods, three signal quality analysis (SQA) methods, and four measurement quality analysis (MQA) methods are proposed in this paper to improve the integrated positioning performance of BDS and GPS. As shown in the experiment results, issues related to BDS and GPS are resolved by the above proposed quality analysis methods. Thus, the anomalies in satellite data, signals and measurements can be detected by following the suggested resolutions to enhance the positioning performance of the combined use of BDS and GPS in the Asia Pacific region. Reduced inertial sensor systems (RISS) have been introduced by many researchers as a low-cost, low-complexity sensor assembly that can be integrated with GPS to provide a robust integrated navigation system for land vehicles. In earlier works, the developed error models were simplified based on the assumption that the vehicle is mostly moving on a flat horizontal plane. Another limitation is the simplified estimation of the horizontal tilt angles, which is based on simple averaging of the accelerometers' measurements without modelling their errors or tilt angle errors. In this paper, a new error model is developed for RISS that accounts for the effect of tilt angle errors and the accelerometer's errors. Additionally, it also includes important terms in the system dynamic error model, which were ignored during the linearization process in earlier works. An augmented extended Kalman filter (EKF) is designed to incorporate tilt angle errors and transversal accelerometer errors. The new error model and the augmented EKF design are developed in a tightly-coupled RISS/GPS integrated navigation system. The proposed system was tested on real trajectories' data under degraded GPS environments, and the results were compared to earlier works on RISS/GPS systems. Small autonomous unmanned aerial systems (UAS) could be used for indoor inspection in emergency missions, such as damage assessment or the search for survivors in dangerous environments, e.g., power plants, underground railways, mines and industrial warehouses. Two basic functions are required to carry out these tasks, that is autonomous GPS-denied navigation with obstacle detection and high-resolution 3Dmapping with moving target detection. State-of-the-art sensors for UAS are very sensitive to environmental conditions and often fail in the case of poor visibility caused by dust, fog, smoke, flames or other factors that are met as nominal mission scenarios when operating indoors. This paper is a preliminary study concerning an innovative radar sensor based on the interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) principle, which has the potential to satisfy stringent requirements set by indoor autonomous operation. An architectural solution based on a frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) scheme is proposed after a detailed analysis of existing compact and lightweight SAR. A preliminary system design is obtained, and the main imaging peculiarities of the novel sensor are discussed, demonstrating that high-resolution, high-quality observation of an assigned control volume can be achieved. In sport science, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are frequently applied to capture athletes' position, velocity and acceleration. Application of GNSS includes a large range of different GNSS technologies and methods. To date no study has comprehensively compared the different GNSS methods applied. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to investigate the effect of differential and non-differential solutions, different satellite systems and different GNSS signal frequencies on position accuracy. Twelve alpine ski racers were equipped with high-end GNSS devices while performing runs on a giant slalom course. The skiers' GNSS antenna positions were calculated in three satellite signal obstruction conditions using five different GNSS methods. The GNSS antenna positions were compared to a video-based photogrammetric reference system over one turn and against the most valid GNSS method over the entire run. Furthermore, the time for acquisitioning differential GNSS solutions was assessed for four differential methods. The only GNSS method that consistently yielded sub-decimetre position accuracy in typical alpine skiing conditions was a differential method using American (GPS) and Russian (GLONASS) satellite systems and the satellite signal frequencies L1 and L2. Under conditions of minimal satellite signal obstruction, valid results were also achieved when either the satellite system GLONASS or the frequency L2 was dropped from the best configuration. All other methods failed to fulfill the accuracy requirements needed to detect relevant differences in the kinematics of alpine skiers, even in conditions favorable for GNSS measurements. The methods with good positioning accuracy had also the shortest times to compute differential solutions. Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) can attain centimeter level positioning accuracy, which is conventionally provided by real-time precise point positioning (PPP) and real-time kinematic (RTK) techniques. Corrections from the data center or the reference stations are required in these techniques to reduce various GNSS errors. The time-relative positioning approach differs from the traditional PPP and RTK in the sense that it does not require external real-time corrections. It computes the differences in positions of a single receiver at different epochs using phase observations. As the code observations are not used in this approach, its performance is not affected by the noise and multipath of code observations. High reliability is another advantage of time-relative precise positioning because the ambiguity resolution is not needed in this approach. Since the data link is not required in the method, this approach has been widely used in remote areas where wireless data link is not available. The main limitation of time-relative positioning is that its accuracy degrades over time between epochs because of the temporal variation of various errors. The application of the approach is usually limited to be within a time interval of less than 20 min. The purpose of this study was to increase the time interval of time-relative positioning and to extend the use of this method to applications with a longer time requirement, especially in remote areas without wireless communication. In this paper, the main error sources of the time-relative method are first analyzed in detail, and then the approach to improve the accumulated time relative positioning method is proposed. The performance of the proposed method is assessed using both static and dynamic observations with a duration as long as several hours. The experiments presented in this paper show that, among the four scenarios tested (i.e., GPS, GPS/Galileo, GPS/Galileo/BeiDou, and GPS/Galileo/BeiDou/GLONASS), GPS/Galileo/BeiDou performed best and GPS/Galileo/BeiDou/GLONASS performed worst. The maximum positioning errors were mostly within 0.5 m in the horizontal direction, even after three hours with GPS/Galileo/BeiDou. It is expected that the method could be used for positioning and navigation for as long as several hours with decimeter level horizontal accuracy in remote areas without wireless communication. One of the causes of positioning inaccuracies in the Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) is navigation error. In urban environment operations, multipaths could be the dominant contributor to navigation errors. This paper presents a study on how the operation environment affects the lateral (horizontal) navigation performance when a self-built UAS is going near different types of urban obstructions in real flight tests. Selected test sites are representative of urban environments, including open carparks, flight paths obstructed by buildings along one or both sides, changing sky access when flying towards corners formed by two buildings or dead ends, and buildings with reflective glass-clad surfaces. The data was analysed to obtain the horizontal position error between Global Positioning System (GPS) position and ground truth derived from Real Time Kinematics (RTK), with considerations for (1) horizontal position uncertainty estimate (EPH) reported by the GPS receiver, (2) no. of visible satellites, and (3) percentage of sky visible (or sky openness ratio, SOR) at various altitudes along the flight paths inside the aforementioned urban environments. The investigation showed that there is no direct correlation between the measured horizontal position error and the reported EPH; thus, the EPH could not be used for the purpose of monitoring navigation performance. The investigation further concluded that there is no universal correlation between the sky openness ratio (SOR) seen by the UAS and the resulting horizontal position error, and a more complex model would need to be considered to translate 3D urban models to expected horizontal navigation uncertainty for the UAS Traffic Management (UTM) airspace. The ephemeris data format of legacy GPS receivers is improper for positioning stationary pseudolites on the ground. Therefore, to utilize pseudolites for navigation, GPS receivers must be modified so that they can handle the modified data formats of the pseudolites. Because of this problem, the practical use of pseudolites has so far been limited. This paper proposes a pseudolite-based positioning system that can be used with unmodified legacy GPS receivers. In the proposed system, pseudolites transmit simulated GPS signals. The signals use standard GPS ephemeris data format and contain ephemeris data of simulated GPS satellites, not those of pseudolites. The use of the standard format enables the GPS receiver to process pseudolite signals without any modification. However, the position output of the GPS receiver is not the correct position in this system, because there are additional signal delays from each pseudolite to the receiver. A post-calculation process was added to obtain the correct receiver position using GPS receiver output. This re-estimation is possible because it is based on known information about the simulated signals, pseudolites, and positioning process of the GPS receiver. Simulations using generated data and live GPS data are conducted for various geometries to verify the proposed system. The test results show that the proposed system provides the desired user position using pseudolite signals without requiring any modifications to the legacy GPS receiver. The use of global navigation satellite system receivers for navigation still presents many challenges in urban canyon and indoor environments, where satellite availability is typically reduced and received signals are attenuated. To improve the navigation performance in such environments, several enhancement methods can be implemented. For instance, external aid provided through coupling with other sensors has proven to contribute substantially to enhancing navigation performance and robustness. Within this context, coupling a very simple GPS receiver with an Inertial Navigation System (INS) based on low-cost micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) inertial sensors is considered in this paper. In particular, we propose a GPS/INS Tightly Coupled Assisted PLL (TCAPLL) architecture, and present most of the associated challenges that need to be addressed when dealing with very-low-performance MEMS inertial sensors. In addition, we propose a data monitoring system in charge of checking the quality of the measurement flow in the architecture. The implementation of the TCAPLL is discussed in detail, and its performance under different scenarios is assessed. Finally, the architecture is evaluated through a test campaign using a vehicle that is driven in urban environments, with the purpose of highlighting the pros and cons of combining MEMS inertial sensors with GPS over GPS alone. Projectiles are subjected to a high acceleration shock at launch (20,000 g and higher) and can spin very fast. Thus, the components of onboard navigation units must therefore withstand such constraints in addition to being inexpensive. This makes only a few inertial sensors suitable for projectiles navigation. Particularly, rate gyroscopes which are gun-hardened and have an appropriate operating range are not widely available. On the other hand, magneto-resistive sensors are inexpensive and can satisfy both gun-hardening and operating range requirements, making them an alternative for angular estimation in guided projectiles. This paper presents a gyroless navigation algorithm for projectiles. The lack of gyroscope is handled by the usage of attitude kinematics computed over past attitude estimates of the filter, coupled with a measurement model based on magnetometer and GPS observations of the attitude. The observability of the attitude when considering non-calibrated magnetometers and its dependency on the initialization is addressed. Then, to cope with the initialization dependency of the filter, we proposed a multi-hypothesis initialization algorithm. Navigation algorithms integrating measurements from multi-sensor systems overcome the problems that arise from using GPS navigation systems in standalone mode. Algorithms which integrate the data from 2D low-cost reduced inertial sensor system (RISS), consisting of a gyroscope and an odometer or wheel encoders, along with a GPS receiver via a Kalman filter has proved to be worthy in providing a consistent and more reliable navigation solution compared to standalone GPS receivers. It has been also shown to be beneficial, especially in GPS-denied environments such as urban canyons and tunnels. The main objective of this paper is to narrow the idea-to-implementation gap that follows the algorithm development by realizing a low-cost real-time embedded navigation system capable of computing the data-fused positioning solution. The role of the developed system is to synchronize the measurements from the three sensors, relative to the pulse per second signal generated from the GPS, after which the navigation algorithm is applied to the synchronized measurements to compute the navigation solution in real-time. Employing a customizable soft-core processor on an FPGA in the kernel of the navigation system, provided the flexibility for communicating with the various sensors and the computation capability required by the Kalman filter integration algorithm. The detection of low received power of global positioning system (GPS) signals in the signal acquisition process is an important issue for GPS applications. Improving the miss-detection problem of low received power signal is crucial, especially for urban or indoor environments. This paper proposes a signal existence verification (SEV) process to detect and subsequently verify low received power GPS signals. The SEV process is based on the time-frequency representation of GPS signal, and it can capture the characteristic of GPS signal in the time-frequency plane to enhance the GPS signal acquisition performance. Several simulations and experiments are conducted to show the effectiveness of the proposed method for low received power signal detection. The contribution of this work is that the SEV process is an additional scheme to assist the GPS signal acquisition process in low received power signal detection, without changing the original signal acquisition or tracking algorithms. In this paper, an indoor positioning system using Global Positioning System (GPS) signals in the 433 MHz Industrial Scientific Medical (ISM) band is proposed, and an experimental demonstration of how the proposed system operates under both line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight conditions on a building floor is presented. The proposed method is based on down-converting (DC) repeaters and an up-converting (UC) receiver. The down-conversion is deployed to avoid the restrictions on the use of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) repeaters, to achieve higher output power, and to expose the GPS signals to lower path loss. The repeaters receive outdoor GPS signals at 1575.42 MHz (L1 band), down-convert them to the 433 MHz ISM band, then amplify and retransmit them to the indoor environment. The front end up-converter is combined with an off-the-shelf GPS receiver. When GPS signals at 433 MHz are received by the up-converting receiver, it then amplifies and up-converts these signals back to the L1 frequency. Subsequently, the off-the-shelf GPS receiver calculates the pseudo-ranges. The raw data are then sent from the receiver over a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi link to a remote computer for data processing and indoor position estimation. Each repeater also has an attenuator to adjust its amplification level so that each repeater transmits almost equal signal levels in order to prevent jamming of the off-the-shelf GPS receiver. Experimental results demonstrate that the indoor position of a receiver can be found with sub-meter accuracy under both line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight conditions. The estimated position was found to be 54 and 98 cm away from the real position, while the 50% circular error probable (CEP) of the collected samples showed a radius of 3.3 and 4 m, respectively, for line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight cases. WiFi Round Trip Time (RTT) unlocks meter level accuracies in user terminal positions where no other navigation systems, such as Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), are able to (e.g., indoors). However, little has been done so far to obtain a scalable and automated system that computes the position of the WiFi Access Points (WAP) using RTT and that is able to estimate, in addition to the position, the hardware biases that offset the WiFi ranging measurements. These biases have a direct impact on the ultimate position accuracy of the terminals. This work proposes a method in which the computation of the WiFi Access Points positions and hardware biases (i.e., products) can be estimated based on the ranges and position fixes provided by user terminals (i.e., inverse positioning) and details how this can be improved if raw GNSS measurements (pseudoranges and carrier phase) are also available in the terminal. The data setup used to obtain a performance assessment was configured in a benign scenario (open sky with no obstructions) in order to obtain an upper boundary on the positioning error that can be achieved with the proposed method. Under these conditions, accuracies better than 1.5 m were achieved for the WAP position and hardware bias. The proposed method is suitable to be implemented in an automated manner, without having to rely on dedicated campaigns to survey 802.11mc-compliant WAPs. Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) have become a primary navigation means for aircraft. However, the signal power of GNSS is very weak, and its service can be disrupted at any time when there is interference or jamming. For this reason, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United States has recently chosen a distance measuring equipment (DME)-based aircraft navigation technique, called DME/DME, as an alternative aircraft navigation means for use by around 2030. The reason that the FAA plans to use DME/DME in such a short duration, by around 2030, is presumed to be because the ranging accuracy of DMEs is between 70 to 300 m, which is about 7 to 30 times worse than that of GNSS. Thus, a significant loss of positioning performance is unavoidable with current DMEs. To make DME/DME a more competent alternative positioning source, this paper proposes an advanced DME that could provide a ranging accuracy of around 30 m by employing a recently developed Stretched-Front-Leg (SFOL) pulse. The paper introduces optimal ground station augmentation algorithms that help to efficiently transform the current DME ground network to enable a DME/DME positioning accuracy of up to 0.3 nm or 92.6 m with a minimal number of new ground DME sites. Positioning systems are used to determine position coordinates in navigation (air, land and marine). The accuracy of an object's position is described by the position error and a statistical analysis can determine its measures, which usually include: Root Mean Square (RMS), twice the Distance Root Mean Square (2DRMS), Circular Error Probable (CEP) and Spherical Probable Error (SEP). It is commonly assumed in navigation that position errors are random and that their distribution are consistent with the normal distribution. This assumption is based on the popularity of the Gauss distribution in science, the simplicity of calculating RMS values for 68% and 95% probabilities, as well as the intuitive perception of randomness in the statistics which this distribution reflects. It should be noted, however, that the necessary conditions for a random variable to be normally distributed include the independence of measurements and identical conditions of their realisation, which is not the case in the iterative method of determining successive positions, the filtration of coordinates or the dependence of the position error on meteorological conditions. In the preface to this publication, examples are provided which indicate that position errors in some navigation systems may not be consistent with the normal distribution. The subsequent section describes basic statistical tests for assessing the fit between the empirical and theoretical distributions (Anderson-Darling, chi-square and Kolmogorov-Smirnov). Next, statistical tests of the position error distributions of very long Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) and European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) campaigns from different years (2006 and 2014) were performed with the number of measurements per session being 900'000 fixes. In addition, the paper discusses selected statistical distributions that fit the empirical measurement results better than the normal distribution. Research has shown that normal distribution is not the optimal statistical distribution to describe position errors of navigation systems. Pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) plays an important role in modern life, including localisation and navigation if a Global Positioning System (GPS) is not available. Most previous PDR methods adopted foot-mounted sensors. However, humans have evolved to keep the head steady in space when the body is moving in order to stabilise the visual field. This indicates that sensors that are placed on the head might provide a more suitable alternative for real-world tracking. Emerging wearable technologies that are connected to the head also makes this a growing field of interest. Head-mounted equipment, such as glasses, are already ubiquitous in everyday life. Whilst other wearable gear, such as helmets, masks, or mouthguards, are becoming increasingly more common. Thus, an accurate PDR method that is specifically designed for head-mounted sensors is needed. It could have various applications in sports, emergency rescue, smart home, etc. In this paper, a new PDR method is introduced for head mounted sensors and compared to two established methods. The data were collected by sensors that were placed on glasses and embedded into a mouthguard. The results show that the newly proposed method outperforms the other two techniques in terms of accuracy, with the new method producing an average end-to-end error of 0.88 m and total distance error of 2.10%. 3D-mapping-aided (3DMA) global navigation satellite system (GNSS) positioning that improves positioning performance in dense urban areas has been under development in recent years, but it still faces many challenges. This paper details a new algorithm that explores the potential of using building boundaries for positioning and heading estimation. Rather than applying complex simulations to analyze and correct signal reflections by buildings, the approach utilizes a convolutional neural network to differentiate between the sky and building in a sky-pointing fisheye image. A new skymask matching algorithm is then proposed to match the segmented fisheye images with skymasks generated from a 3D building model. Each matched skymask holds a latitude, longitude coordinate and heading angle to determine the precise location of the fisheye image. The results are then compared with the smartphone GNSS and advanced 3DMA GNSS positioning methods. The proposed method provides degree-level heading accuracy, and improved positioning accuracy similar to other advanced 3DMA GNSS positioning methods in a rich urban environment. The existence of colored noise in kinematic positioning will greatly degrade the accuracy of position solutions. This paper proposes a Kalman filter-based quad-constellation global navigation satellite system (GNSS) navigation algorithm with colored noise mitigation. In this algorithm, the observation colored noise and state colored noise models are established by utilizing their residuals in the past epochs, and then the colored noise is predicted using the models for mitigation in the current epoch in the integrated Global Positioning System (GPS)/GLObal NAvigation Satellite System (GLONASS)/BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS)/Galileo navigation. Kinematic single point positioning (SPP) experiments under different satellite visibility conditions and road patterns are conducted to evaluate the effect of colored noise on the positioning accuracy for the quad-constellation combined navigation. Experiment results show that the colored noise model can fit the colored noise more effectively in the case of good satellite visibility. As a result, the positioning accuracy improvement is more significant after handling the colored noise. The three-dimensional positioning accuracy can be improved by 25.1%. Different satellite elevation cut-off angles of 10º, 20º and 30º are set to simulate different satellite visibility situations. Results indicate that the colored noise is decreased with the increment of the elevation cut-off angle. Consequently, the improvement of the SPP accuracy after handling the colored noise is gradually reduced from 27.3% to 16.6%. In the cases of straight and curved roads, the quad-constellation GNSS-SPP accuracy can be improved by 22.1% and 25.7% after taking the colored noise into account. Multi- system and multi-frequency are two key factors that determine the performance of precise point positioning. Both multi-frequency and multi-system lead to new biases, which are not solved systematically. This paper concentrates on mathematical models of biases, influences of these biases, and positioning performance analysis of different observation models. The biases comprise the inter-frequency clock bias in multi-frequency and the inter-system clock bias in multi-system. The former is the residual differential code biases (DCBs) from receiver clock and satellite clock and usually occurs at the third frequency, the latter is the deviation of the receiver clock errors in different systems. Unified mathematical models of the biases are presented by analyzing the general formula of observation equations. The influences of these biases are validated by experiments with corresponding observation models. Subsequently, the experiments, which are based on the data at five globally distributed stations in Multi-Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Experiment (MGEX) on day of year 100, 2018, assess positioning performance of different observation models with combination of frequencies (dual-frequency or triple- frequency) and systems (BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) or Global Positioning System (GPS)). The results show that the performances of triple-frequency models are almost as the same level as the dual-frequency models. They provide scientific support for the triple-frequency ambiguity-fixed solution which has a better convergence characteristic than dual-frequency ambiguity-fixed solution. Furthermore, the biases are expressed as an unified form that gives an important and valuable reference for future research on multi-frequency and multi-system precise point positioning. The dominant navigation system for low-cost, mass-market Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is based on an Inertial Navigation System (INS) coupled with a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). However, problems tend to arise during periods of GNSS outage where the navigation solution degrades rapidly. Therefore, this paper details a model-based integration approach for fixed wing UAVs, using the Vehicle Dynamics Model (VDM) as the main process model aided by low-cost Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) inertial sensors and GNSS measurements with moment of inertia calibration using an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF). Results show that the position error does not exceed 14.5 m in all directions after 140 s of GNSS outage. Roll and pitch errors are bounded to 0.06 degrees and the error in yaw grows slowly to 0.65 degrees after 140 s of GNSS outage. The filter is able to estimate model parameters and even the moment of inertia terms even with significant coupling between them. Pitch and yaw moment coefficient terms present significant cross coupling while roll moment terms seem to be decorrelated from all of the other terms, whilst more dynamic manoeuvres could help to improve the overall observability of the parameters. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is the most widely used Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) technology in the world today, but it suffers some major constraints. Locata is a terrestrial PNT technology that can be considered as a type of localised "constellation", which is able to provide high-accuracy PNT coverage where GNSS cannot be used. This paper presents a comprehensive literature review of the Locata technology and its applications. It seeks to answer questions, such as: (1) What is Locata and how does it work? (2) What makes Locata unique compared with other terrestrial positioning systems? (3) How has Locata been used in different applications for accurate PNT? Using multiple IMUs allows both their distribution along vehicle structures and a reliance on integration methods, which is not possible with a single IMU. This paper addresses the issue of relying on three IMUs instead of only one of a higher quality in the context of a satellite launcher. The impact of the IMU positions was tested by comparing collocated IMUs against IMUs installed in the head of each launcher stage. For multi-IMU configurations, three integration methods were tested: all IMUs fused in a single INS, multiple INSs fused in a stacked filter, and multiple INSs fused in a stacked filter with geometrical constraints. All navigation solutions were aided by a three-axis attitude reference sensor and were tested with and without a GPS receiver. The results show that distributing IMUs along the launcher structure does not improve navigation performances compared to having them collocated. The fusion of multiple IMUs in one INS provides equivalent results as one IMU. However, fusing multiple INSs greatly reduces estimation errors. Performances are further improved with the addition of geometrical constraints. The GPS provides positioning information almost anytime and anywhere on Earth, regardless of the weather conditions, and has become an essential technology for positioning and navigation. As a modernization program, the fourth civil GPS signal, denoted as L1C, will be transmitted from Block III satellites. One distinction of the L1C signal from the former signals is the use of binary offset carrier (BOC) modulation, which is necessary for compatibility and the reduction of interference between the legacy L1 signal and L1C signal, despite their use of the same carrier frequency. One drawback of using BOC modulation is the ambiguity problem, which comes from the multiple peaks in the correlation function and causes difficulties finding the code phase in the acquisition process. In this paper we suggest two delay-and-multiply (DM) methods for the L1C signal to solve the ambiguity problem. For the DM acquisition schemes we suggest the optimal delay time for the delay signal, and prove that the correlation function of the received DM signal and the generated DM signal has a triangular shape, as seen in the legacy GPS L1 signal. The noise characteristics of the decision variable are obtained and the performance of the DM acquisition scheme is given in terms of the probability of detection, and compared with that of the conventional method.
