This document is an editorial for a special issue titled "Machine Learning in Computer Vision and Image Sensing: Theory and Applications." The editorial highlights the diverse applications of machine learning (ML) models in various domains such as medical imaging, signal processing, remote sensing, and human activity detection. The special issue includes 11 papers that cover topics such as image segmentation, fluvial navigation, Alzheimer's disease classification, pneumothorax detection, lung cancer malignancy prediction, amniotic fluid volume detection, COVID-19 detection, and Parkinson's disease detection. Emotion recognition has become increasingly important in the field of Deep Learning (DL) and computer vision due to its broad applicability by using human–computer interaction (HCI) in areas such as psychology, healthcare, and entertainment. In this paper, we conduct a systematic review of facial and pose emotion recognition using DL and computer vision, analyzing and evaluating 77 papers from different sources under Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Our review covers several topics, including the scope and purpose of the studies, the methods employed, and the used datasets. The scope of this work is to conduct a systematic review of facial and pose emotion recognition using DL methods and computer vision. The studies were categorized based on a proposed taxonomy that describes the type of expressions used for emotion detection, the testing environment, the currently relevant DL methods, and the datasets used. The taxonomy of methods in our review includes Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (R-CNN), Vision Transformer (ViT), and "Other NNs", which are the most commonly used models in the analyzed studies, indicating their trendiness in the field. Hybrid and augmented models are not explicitly categorized within this taxonomy, but they are still important to the field. This review offers an understanding of state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms and datasets for emotion recognition through facial expressions and body poses, allowing researchers to understand its fundamental components and trends. The purpose of image dehazing is to remove the interference from weather factors in degraded images and enhance the clarity and color saturation of images to maximize the restoration of useful features. Single image dehazing is one of the most important tasks in the field of image restoration. In recent years, due to the progress of deep learning, single image dehazing has made great progress. With the success of Transformer in advanced computer vision tasks, some research studies also began to apply Transformer to image dehazing tasks and obtained surprising results. However, both the deconvolution-neural-network-based dehazing algorithm and Transformer based dehazing algorithm magnify their advantages and disadvantages separately. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel Transformer–Convolution fusion dehazing network (TCFDN), which uses Transformer's global modeling ability and convolutional neural network's local modeling ability to improve the dehazing ability. In the Transformer–Convolution fusion dehazing network, the classic self-encoder structure is used. This paper proposes a Transformer–Convolution hybrid layer, which uses an adaptive fusion strategy to make full use of the Swin-Transformer and convolutional neural network to extract and reconstruct image features. On the basis of previous research, this layer further improves the ability of the network to remove haze. A series of contrast experiments and ablation experiments not only proved that the Transformer–Convolution fusion dehazing network proposed in this paper exceeded the more advanced dehazing algorithm, but also provided solid and powerful evidence for the basic theory on which it depends. Advancements in imaging, computer vision, and automation have revolutionized various fields, including field-based high-throughput plant phenotyping (FHTPP). This integration allows for the rapid and accurate measurement of plant traits. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) have emerged as a powerful tool in FHTPP, particularly in crop segmentation—identifying crops from the background—crucial for trait analysis. However, the effectiveness of DCNNs often hinges on the availability of large, labeled datasets, which poses a challenge due to the high cost of labeling. In this study, a deep learning with bagging approach is introduced to enhance crop segmentation using high-resolution RGB images, tested on the NU-Spidercam dataset from maize plots. The proposed method outperforms traditional machine learning and deep learning models in prediction accuracy and speed. Remarkably, it achieves up to 40 % higher Intersection-over-Union (IoU) than the threshold method and 11 % over conventional machine learning, with significantly faster prediction times and manageable training duration. Crucially, it demonstrates that even small labeled datasets can yield high accuracy in semantic segmentation. This approach not only proves effective for FHTPP but also suggests potential for broader application in remote sensing, offering a scalable solution to semantic segmentation challenges. Crowd counting, as a basic computer vision task, plays an important role in many fields such as video surveillance, accident prediction, public security, and intelligent transportation. At present, crowd counting tasks face various challenges. Firstly, due to the diversity of crowd distribution and increasing population density, there is a phenomenon of large-scale crowd aggregation in public places, sports stadiums, and stations, resulting in very serious occlusion. Secondly, when annotating large-scale datasets, positioning errors can also easily affect training results. In addition, the size of human head targets in dense images is not consistent, making it difficult to identify both near and far targets using only one network simultaneously. The existing crowd counting methods mainly use density plot regression methods. However, this framework does not distinguish the features between distant and near targets and cannot adaptively respond to scale changes. Therefore, the detection performance in areas with sparse population distribution is not good. To solve such problems, we propose an adaptive multi-scale far and near distance network based on the convolutional neural network (CNN) framework for counting dense populations and achieving a good balance between accuracy, inference speed, and performance. However, on the feature level, in order to enable the model to distinguish the differences between near and far features, we use stacked convolution layers to deepen the depth of the network, allocate different receptive fields according to the distance between the target and the camera, and fuse the features between nearby targets to enhance the feature extraction ability of pedestrians under nearby targets. Secondly, depth information is used to distinguish distant and near targets of different scales and the original image is cut into four different patches to perform pixel-level adaptive modeling on the population. In addition, we add density normalized average precision (nAP) indicators to analyze the accuracy of our method in spatial positioning. This paper validates the effectiveness of NF-Net on three challenging benchmarks in Shanghai Tech Part A and B, UCF_ CC_50, and UCF-QNRF datasets. Compared with SOTA, it has more significant performance in various scenarios. This paper addresses the problem of nonlinear and dotted defect detection for multi-vision-based mask inspection systems in mask manufacturing lines. As the mask production amounts increased due to the spread of COVID-19 around the world, the mask inspection systems require more efficient defect detection algorithms. However, the traditional computer vision detection algorithms suffer from various types and very small sizes of the nonlinear and dotted defects on masks. This paper proposes a deep learning-based mask defect detection method, which includes a convolutional neural network (CNN) and efficient preprocessing. The proposed method was developed to be applied to real manufacturing systems, and thus all the training and inference processes were conducted with real data produced by real mask manufacturing systems. Image recognition has long been one of the research hotspots in computer vision tasks. The development of deep learning is rapid in recent years, and convolutional neural networks usually need to be designed with fixed resources. If sufficient resources are available, the model can be scaled up to achieve higher accuracy, for example, VggNet, ResNet, GoogLeNet, etc. Although the accuracy of large-scale models has been improved, the following problems will occur with the expansion of model scale: (1) There may be over-fitting; (2) increasing model parameters; (3) slow model convergence. This paper proposes a design method for a modular convolutional neural network model which solves the problem of over-fitting and large model parameters by connecting multiple modules in parallel. Moreover, each module contains several submodules (three submodules in this paper) and fuses the features extracted from the submodules. The model convergence can be accelerated by using the fused features (the fused features contain more image information). In this study, we add a gate unit based on the attention mechanism to the model, which aims to optimize the structure of the model (select the optimal number of modules), allowing the model to select an optimum network structure by learning and dynamically reducing FLOPs (floating-point operations per second) of the model. Compared to VggNet, ResNet, and GoogLeNet, the structure of the model proposed in this paper is simple and the parameters are small. Image stitching involves combining multiple images of the same scene captured from different viewpoints into a single image with an expanded field of view. While this technique has various applications in computer vision, traditional methods rely on the successive stitching of image pairs taken from multiple cameras. While this approach is effective for organized camera arrays, it can pose challenges for unstructured ones, especially when handling scene overlaps. This paper presents a deep learning-based approach for stitching images from large unstructured camera sets covering complex scenes. Our method processes images concurrently by using the SandFall algorithm to transform data from multiple cameras into a reduced fixed array, thereby minimizing data loss. A customized convolutional neural network then processes these data to produce the final image. By stitching images simultaneously, our method avoids the potential cascading errors seen in sequential pairwise stitching while offering improved time efficiency. In addition, we detail an unsupervised training method for the network utilizing metrics from Generative Adversarial Networks supplemented with supervised learning. Our testing revealed that the proposed approach operates in roughly ∼1/7th the time of many traditional methods on both CPU and GPU platforms, achieving results consistent with established methods. Deep Learning (DL) has provided a significant breakthrough in many areas of research and industry. The development of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) has enabled the improvement of computer vision-based techniques, making the information gathered from cameras more useful. For this reason, recently, studies have been carried out on the use of image-based DL in some areas of people's daily life. In this paper, an object detection-based algorithm is proposed to modify and improve the user experience in relation to the use of cooking appliances. The algorithm can sense common kitchen objects and identify interesting situations for users. Some of these situations are the detection of utensils on lit hobs, recognition of boiling, smoking and oil in kitchenware, and determination of good cookware size adjustment, among others. In addition, the authors have achieved sensor fusion by using a cooker hob with Bluetooth connectivity, so it is possible to automatically interact with it via an external device such as a computer or a mobile phone. Our main contribution focuses on supporting people when they are cooking, controlling heaters, or alerting them with different types of alarms. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a YOLO algorithm has been used to control the cooktop by means of visual sensorization. Moreover, this research paper provides a comparison of the detection performance among different YOLO networks. Additionally, a dataset of more than 7500 images has been generated and multiple data augmentation techniques have been compared. The results show that YOLOv5s can successfully detect common kitchen objects with high accuracy and fast speed, and it can be employed for realistic cooking environment applications. Video anomaly event detection (VAED) is one of the key technologies in computer vision for smart surveillance systems. With the advent of deep learning, contemporary advances in VAED have achieved substantial success. Recently, weakly supervised VAED (WVAED) has become a popular VAED technical route of research. WVAED methods do not depend on a supplementary self-supervised substitute task, yet they can assess anomaly scores straightway. However, the performance of WVAED methods depends on pretrained feature extractors. In this paper, we first address taking advantage of two pretrained feature extractors for CNN (e.g., C3D and I3D) and ViT (e.g., CLIP), for effectively extracting discerning representations. We then consider long-range and short-range temporal dependencies and put forward video snippets of interest by leveraging our proposed temporal self-attention network (TSAN). We design a multiple instance learning (MIL)-based generalized architecture named CNN-ViT-TSAN, by using CNN- and/or ViT-extracted features and TSAN to specify a series of models for the WVAED problem. Power distribution grids are typically installed outdoors and are exposed to environmental conditions. When contamination accumulates in the structures of the network, there may be shutdowns caused by electrical arcs. To improve the reliability of the network, visual inspections of the electrical power system can be carried out; these inspections can be automated using computer vision techniques based on deep neural networks. Based on this need, this paper proposes the Semi-ProtoPNet deep learning model to classify defective structures in the power distribution networks. The Semi-ProtoPNet deep neural network does not perform convex optimization of its last dense layer to maintain the impact of the negative reasoning process on image classification. The negative reasoning process rejects the incorrect classes of an input image; for this reason, it is possible to carry out an analysis with a low number of images that have different backgrounds, which is one of the challenges of this type of analysis. Semi-ProtoPNet achieves an accuracy of 97.22%, being superior to VGG-13, VGG-16, VGG-19, ResNet-34, ResNet-50, ResNet-152, DenseNet-121, DenseNet-161, DenseNet-201, and also models of the same class such as ProtoPNet, NP-ProtoPNet, Gen-ProtoPNet, and Ps-ProtoPNet. Object detection is a fundamental task in computer vision. Over the past several years, convolutional neural network (CNN)-based object detection models have significantly improved detection accuracyin terms of average precision (AP). Furthermore, feature pyramid networks (FPNs) are essential modules for object detection models to consider various object scales. However, the AP for small objects is lower than the AP for medium and large objects. It is difficult to recognize small objects because they do not have sufficient information, and information is lost in deeper CNN layers. This paper proposes a new FPN model named ssFPN (scale sequence (S 2 ) feature-based feature pyramid network) to detect multi-scale objects, especially small objects. We propose a new scale sequence (S 2 ) feature that is extracted by 3D convolution on the level of the FPN. It is defined and extracted from the FPN to strengthen the information on small objects based on scale-space theory. Motivated by this theory, the FPN is regarded as a scale space and extracts a scale sequence (S 2 ) feature by three-dimensional convolution on the level axis of the FPN. The defined feature is basically scale-invariant and is built on a high-resolution pyramid feature map for small objects. Additionally, the deigned S 2 feature can be extended to most object detection models based on FPNs. We also designed a feature-level super-resolution approach to show the efficiency of the scale sequence (S 2 ) feature. We verified that the scale sequence (S 2 ) feature could improve the classification accuracy for low-resolution images by training a feature-level super-resolution model. To demonstrate the effect of the scale sequence (S 2 ) feature, experiments on the scale sequence (S 2 ) feature built-in object detection approach including both one-stage and two-stage models were conducted on the MS COCO dataset. For the two-stage object detection models Faster R-CNN and Mask R-CNN with the S 2 feature, AP improvements of up to 1.6% and 1.4%, respectively, were achieved. Additionally, the AP S of each model was improved by 1.2% and 1.1%, respectively. Furthermore, the one-stage object detection models in the YOLO series were improved. For YOLOv4-P5, YOLOv4-P6, YOLOR-P6, YOLOR-W6, and YOLOR-D6 with the S 2 feature, 0.9%, 0.5%, 0.5%, 0.1%, and 0.1% AP improvements were observed. For small object detection, the AP S increased by 1.1%, 1.1%, 0.9%, 0.4%, and 0.1%, respectively. Experiments using the feature-level super-resolution approach with the proposed scale sequence (S 2 ) feature were conducted on the CIFAR-100 dataset. By training the feature-level super-resolution model, we verified that ResNet-101 with the S 2 feature trained on LR images achieved a 55.2% classification accuracy, which was 1.6% higher than for ResNet-101 trained on HR images. Gaze estimation is an established research problem in computer vision. It has various applications in real life, from human–computer interactions to health care and virtual reality, making it more viable for the research community. Due to the significant success of deep learning techniques in other computer vision tasks—for example, image classification, object detection, object segmentation, and object tracking—deep learning-based gaze estimation has also received more attention in recent years. This paper uses a convolutional neural network (CNN) for person-specific gaze estimation. The person-specific gaze estimation utilizes a single model trained for one individual user, contrary to the commonly-used generalized models trained on multiple people's data. We utilized only low-quality images directly collected from a standard desktop webcam, so our method can be applied to any computer system equipped with such a camera without additional hardware requirements. First, we used the web camera to collect a dataset of face and eye images. Then, we tested different combinations of CNN parameters, including the learning and dropout rates. Our findings show that building a person-specific eye-tracking model produces better results with a selection of good hyperparameters when compared to universal models that are trained on multiple users' data. In particular, we achieved the best results for the left eye with 38.20 MAE (Mean Absolute Error) in pixels, the right eye with 36.01 MAE, both eyes combined with 51.18 MAE, and the whole face with 30.09 MAE, which is equivalent to approximately 1.45 degrees for the left eye, 1.37 degrees for the right eye, 1.98 degrees for both eyes combined, and 1.14 degrees for full-face images. It is considered that 1 in 10 adults worldwide have diabetes. Diabetic foot ulcers are some of the most common complications of diabetes, and they are associated with a high risk of lower-limb amputation and, as a result, reduced life expectancy. Timely detection and periodic ulcer monitoring can considerably decrease amputation rates. Recent research has demonstrated that computer vision can be used to identify foot ulcers and perform non-contact telemetry by using ulcer and tissue area segmentation. However, the applications are limited to controlled lighting conditions, and expert knowledge is required for dataset annotation. This paper reviews the latest publications on the use of artificial intelligence for ulcer area detection and segmentation. The PRISMA methodology was used to search for and select articles, and the selected articles were reviewed to collect quantitative and qualitative data. Qualitative data were used to describe the methodologies used in individual studies, while quantitative data were used for generalization in terms of dataset preparation and feature extraction. Publicly available datasets were accounted for, and methods for preprocessing, augmentation, and feature extraction were evaluated. It was concluded that public datasets can be used to form a bigger, more diverse datasets, and the prospects of wider image preprocessing and the adoption of augmentation require further research. Anomalous road manhole covers pose a potential risk to road safety in cities. In the development of smart cities, computer vision techniques use deep learning to automatically detect anomalous manhole covers to avoid these risks. One important problem is that a large amount of data are required to train a road anomaly manhole cover detection model. The number of anomalous manhole covers is usually small, which makes it a challenge to create training datasets quickly. To expand the dataset and improve the generalization of the model, researchers usually copy and paste samples from the original data to other data in order to achieve data augmentation. In this paper, we propose a new data augmentation method, which uses data that do not exist in the original dataset as samples to automatically select the pasting position of manhole cover samples and predict the transformation parameters via visual prior experience and perspective transformations, making it more accurately capture the actual shape of manhole covers on a road. There is great interest in automatically detecting road weather and understanding its impacts on the overall safety of the transport network. This can, for example, support road condition-based maintenance or even serve as detection systems that assist safe driving during adverse climate conditions. In computer vision, previous work has demonstrated the effectiveness of deep learning in predicting weather conditions from outdoor images. However, training deep learning models to accurately predict weather conditions using real-world road-facing images is difficult due to: (1) the simultaneous occurrence of multiple weather conditions; (2) imbalanced occurrence of weather conditions throughout the year; and (3) road idiosyncrasies, such as road layouts, illumination, and road objects, etc. In this paper, we explore the use of a focal loss function to force the learning process to focus on weather instances that are hard to learn with the objective of helping address data imbalances. In addition, we explore the attention mechanism for pixel-based dynamic weight adjustment to handle road idiosyncrasies using state-of-the-art vision transformer models. Experiments with a novel multi-label road weather dataset show that focal loss significantly increases the accuracy of computer vision approaches for imbalanced weather conditions. Furthermore, vision transformers outperform current state-of-the-art convolutional neural networks in predicting weather conditions with a validation accuracy of 92% and an F1-score of 81.22%, which is impressive considering the imbalanced nature of the dataset. Understanding actions in videos remains a significant challenge in computer vision, which has been the subject of several pieces of research in the last decades. Convolutional neural networks (CNN) are a significant component of this topic and play a crucial role in the renown of Deep Learning. Inspired by the human vision system, CNN has been applied to visual data exploitation and has solved various challenges in various computer vision tasks and video/image analysis, including action recognition (AR). However, not long ago, along with the achievement of the transformer in natural language processing (NLP), it began to set new trends in vision tasks, which has created a discussion around whether the Vision Transformer models (ViT) will replace CNN in action recognition in video clips. This paper conducts this trending topic in detail, the study of CNN and Transformer for Action Recognition separately and a comparative study of the accuracy-complexity trade-off. With a large number of Local Binary Patterns (LBP) variants being currently used today, the significant and importance of visual descriptors in computer vision applications are prominent. This paper presents a novel visual descriptor, i.e., SIM-LBP. It employs a new matrix technique called the Symmetric Inline Matrix generator method, which acts as a new variant of LBP. The key feature that separates our variant from existing counterparts is that our variant is very efficient in extracting facial expression features like eyes, eye brows, nose and mouth in a wide range of lighting conditions. For testing our model, we applied SIM-LBP on the JAFFE dataset to convert all the images to its corresponding SIM-LBP transformed variant. These transformed images are then used to train a Convolution Neural Network (CNN) based deep learning model for facial expressions recognition (FER). Several performance evaluation metrics, i.e., recognition accuracy rate, precision, recall, and F1-score, were used to test mode efficiency in comparison with those using the traditional LBP descriptor and other LBP variants. Our model outperformed in all four matrices with the proposed SIM-LBP transformation on the input images against those of baseline methods. In comparison analysis with the other state-of-the-art methods, it shows the usefulness of the proposed SIM-LBP model. Point clouds are one of the most widely used data formats produced by depth sensors. There is a lot of research into feature extraction from unordered and irregular point cloud data. Deep learning in computer vision achieves great performance for data classification and segmentation of 3D data points as point clouds. Various research has been conducted on point clouds and remote sensing tasks using deep learning (DL) methods. However, there is a research gap in providing a road map of existing work, including limitations and challenges. This paper focuses on introducing the state-of-the-art DL models, categorized by the structure of the data they consume. The models' performance is collected, and results are provided for benchmarking on the most used datasets. Additionally, we summarize the current benchmark 3D datasets publicly available for DL training and testing. In our comparative study, we can conclude that convolutional neural networks (CNNs) achieve the best performance in various remote-sensing applications while being light-weighted models, namely Dynamic Graph CNN (DGCNN) and ConvPoint. The development of the smartphone and computer vision technique provides customers with a convenient approach to identify tea species, as well as qualities. However, the prediction model may not behave robustly due to changes in illumination conditions. Fluorescence imaging can induce the fluorescence signal from typical components, and thus may improve the prediction accuracy. In this paper, a tea classification method based on fluorescence imaging and convolutional neural networks (CNN) is proposed. Ultra-violet (UV) LEDs with a central wavelength of 370 nm were utilized to induce the fluorescence of tea samples so that the fluorescence images could be captured. Five kinds of tea were included and pre-processed. Two CNN-based classification models, e.g., the VGG16 and ResNet-34, were utilized for model training. Images captured under the conventional fluorescent lamp were also tested for comparison. The results show that the accuracy of the classification model based on fluorescence images is better than those based on the white-light illumination images, and the performance of the VGG16 model is better than the ResNet-34 model in our case. The accurate intelligent identification and detection of road cracks is a key issue in road maintenance, and it has become popular to perform this task through the field of computer vision. In this paper, we proposed a deep learning-based crack detection method that initially uses the idea of image sparse representation and compressed sensing to preprocess the datasets. Only the pixels that represent the crack features remain, while most pixels of non-crack features are relatively sparse, which can significantly improve the accuracy and efficiency of crack identification. The proposed method achieved good results based on the limited datasets of crack images. Various algorithms were tested, namely, linear smooth, median filtering, Gaussian smooth, and grayscale threshold, where the optimal parameters of the various algorithms were analyzed and trained with faster regions with convolutional neural network features (faster R-CNN). The results of the experiments showed that the proposed method has good robustness, with higher detection efficiency in the presence of, for example, road markings, shallow cracks, multiple cracks, and blurring. The paper presents a simple, yet robust computer vision system for robot arm tracking with the use of RGB-D cameras. Tracking means to measure in real time the robot state given by three angles and with known restrictions about the robot geometry. The tracking system consists of two parts: image preprocessing and machine learning. In the machine learning part, we compare two approaches: fitting the robot pose to the point cloud and fitting the convolutional neural network model to the sparse 3D depth images. The task of reconstructing 3D scenes based on visual data represents a longstanding problem in computer vision. Common reconstruction approaches rely on the use of multiple volumetric primitives to describe complex objects. Superquadrics (a class of volumetric primitives) have shown great promise due to their ability to describe various shapes with only a few parameters. Recent research has shown that deep learning methods can be used to accurately reconstruct random superquadrics from both 3D point cloud data and simple depth images. In this paper, we extended these reconstruction methods to intensity and color images. Specifically, we used a dedicated convolutional neural network (CNN) model to reconstruct a single superquadric from the given input image. We analyzed the results in a qualitative and quantitative manner, by visualizing reconstructed superquadrics as well as observing error and accuracy distributions of predictions. We showed that a CNN model designed around a simple ResNet backbone can be used to accurately reconstruct superquadrics from images containing one object, but only if one of the spatial parameters is fixed or if it can be determined from other image characteristics, e.g., shadows. Furthermore, we experimented with images of increasing complexity, for example, by adding textures, and observed that the results degraded only slightly. In addition, we show that our model outperforms the current state-of-the-art method on the studied task. Age estimation from human faces is an important yet challenging task in computer vision because of the large differences between physical age and apparent age. Due to the differences including races, genders, and other factors, the performance of a learning method for this task strongly depends on the training data. Although many inspiring works have focused on the age estimation of a single human face through deep learning, the existing methods still have lower performance when dealing with faces in videos because of the differences in head pose between frames, which can lead to greatly different results. In this paper, a combined system of age estimation and head pose estimation is proposed to improve the performance of age estimation from faces in videos. We use deep regression forests (DRFs) to estimate the age of facial images, while a multiloss convolutional neural network is also utilized to estimate the head pose. Accordingly, we estimate the age of faces only for head poses within a set degree threshold to enable value refinement. First, we divided the images in the Cross-Age Celebrity Dataset (CACD) and the Asian Face Age Dataset (AFAD) according to the estimated head pose degrees and generated separate age estimates for images with different poses. The experimental results showed that the accuracy of age estimation from frontal facial images was better than that for faces at different angles, thus demonstrating the effect of head pose on age estimation. Further experiments were conducted on several videos to estimate the age of the same person with his or her face at different angles, and the results show that our proposed combined system can provide more precise and reliable age estimates than a system without head pose estimation. In this paper, we propose an activity detection system using a 24 × 32 resolution infrared array sensor placed on the ceiling. We first collect the data at different resolutions (i.e., 24 × 32, 12 × 16, and 6 × 8) and apply the advanced deep learning (DL) techniques of Super-Resolution (SR) and denoising to enhance the quality of the images. We then classify the images/sequences of images depending on the activities the subject is performing using a hybrid deep learning model combining a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). We use data augmentation to improve the training of the neural networks by incorporating a wider variety of samples. The process of data augmentation is performed by a Conditional Generative Adversarial Network (CGAN). By enhancing the images using SR, removing the noise, and adding more training samples via data augmentation, our target is to improve the classification accuracy of the neural network. Through experiments, we show that employing these deep learning techniques to low-resolution noisy infrared images leads to a noticeable improvement in performance. The classification accuracy improved from 78.32% to 84.43% (for images with 6 × 8 resolution), and from 90.11% to 94.54% (for images with 12 × 16 resolution) when we used the CNN and CNN + LSTM networks, respectively. Public aquariums and similar institutions often use video as a method to monitor the behavior, health, and status of aquatic organisms in their environments. These video footages take up a sizeable amount of space and require the use of autoencoders to reduce their file size for efficient storage. The autoencoder neural network is an emerging technique which uses the extracted latent space from an input source to reduce the image size for storage, and then reconstructs the source within an acceptable loss range for use. To meet an aquarium's practical needs, the autoencoder must have easily maintainable codes, low power consumption, be easily adoptable, and not require a substantial amount of memory use or processing power. Conventional configurations of autoencoders often provide results that perform beyond an aquarium's needs at the cost of being too complex for their architecture to handle, while few take low-contrast sources into consideration. Thus, in this instance, "keeping it simple" would be the ideal approach to the autoencoder's model design. This paper proposes a practical approach catered to an aquarium's specific needs through the configuration of autoencoder parameters. It first explores the differences between the two of the most widely applied autoencoder approaches, Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) and Convolution Neural Networks (CNN), to identify the most appropriate approach. The paper concludes that while both approaches (with proper configurations and image preprocessing) can reduce the dimensionality and reduce visual noise of the low-contrast images gathered from aquatic video footage, the CNN approach is more suitable for an aquarium's architecture. As an unexpected finding of the experiments conducted, the paper also discovered that by manipulating the formula for the MLP approach, the autoencoder could generate a denoised differential image that contains sharper and more desirable visual information to an aquarium's operation. Lastly, the paper has found that proper image preprocessing prior to the application of the autoencoder led to better model convergence and prediction results, as demonstrated both visually and numerically in the experiment. Facial emotion recognition (FER) is an important topic in the fields of computer vision and artificial intelligence owing to its significant academic and commercial potential. Although FER can be conducted using multiple sensors, this review focuses on studies that exclusively use facial images, because visual expressions are one of the main information channels in interpersonal communication. This paper provides a brief review of researches in the field of FER conducted over the past decades. First, conventional FER approaches are described along with a summary of the representative categories of FER systems and their main algorithms. Deep-learning-based FER approaches using deep networks enabling “end-to-end” learning are then presented. This review also focuses on an up-to-date hybrid deep-learning approach combining a convolutional neural network (CNN) for the spatial features of an individual frame and long short-term memory (LSTM) for temporal features of consecutive frames. In the later part of this paper, a brief review of publicly available evaluation metrics is given, and a comparison with benchmark results, which are a standard for a quantitative comparison of FER researches, is described. Roads make a huge contribution to the economy and act as a platform for transportation. Potholes in roads are one of the major concerns in transportation infrastructure. A lot of research has proposed using computer vision techniques to automate pothole detection that include a wide range of image processing and object detection algorithms. There is a need to automate the pothole detection process with adequate accuracy and speed and implement the process easily and with low setup cost. In this paper, we have developed efficient deep learning convolution neural networks (CNNs) to detect potholes in real-time with adequate accuracy. To reduce the computational cost and improve the training results, this paper proposes a modified VGG16 (MVGG16) network by removing some convolution layers and using different dilation rates. Moreover, this paper uses the MVGG16 as a backbone network for the Faster R-CNN. In addition, this work compares the performance of YOLOv5 (Large (Yl), Medium (Ym), and Small (Ys)) models with ResNet101 backbone and Faster R-CNN with ResNet50(FPN), VGG16, MobileNetV2, InceptionV3, and MVGG16 backbones. The experimental results show that the Ys model is more applicable for real-time pothole detection because of its speed. In addition, using the MVGG16 network as the backbone of the Faster R-CNN provides better mean precision and shorter inference time than using VGG16, InceptionV3, or MobilNetV2 backbones. In this work, we describe in detail how Deep Learning and Computer Vision can help to detect fault events of the AirTender system, an aftermarket motorcycle damping system component. One of the most effective ways to monitor the AirTender functioning is to look for oil stains on its surface. Starting from real-time images, AirTender is first detected in the motorbike suspension system, simulated indoor, and then, a binary classifier determines whether AirTender is spilling oil or not. The detection is made with the help of the Yolo5 architecture, whereas the classification is carried out with the help of a suitably designed Convolutional Neural Network, OilNet40. In order to detect oil leaks more clearly, we dilute the oil in AirTender with a fluorescent dye with an excitation wavelength peak of approximately 390 nm. AirTender is then illuminated with suitable UV LEDs. The whole system is an attempt to design a low-cost detection setup. An on-board device, such as a mini-computer, is placed near the suspension system and connected to a full hd camera framing AirTender. Most current deep learning models are suboptimal in terms of the flexibility of their input shape. Usually, computer vision models only work on one fixed shape used during training, otherwise their performance degrades significantly. For video-related tasks, the length of each video (i.e., number of video frames) can vary widely; therefore, sampling of video frames is employed to ensure that every video has the same temporal length. This training method brings about drawbacks in both the training and testing phases. For instance, a universal temporal length can damage the features in longer videos, preventing the model from flexibly adapting to variable lengths for the purposes of on-demand inference. To address this, we propose a simple yet effective training paradigm for 3D convolutional neural networks (3D-CNN) which enables them to process videos with inputs having variable temporal length, i.e., variable length training (VLT). Compared with the standard video training paradigm, our method introduces three extra operations during training: sampling twice, temporal packing, and subvideo-independent 3D convolution. These operations are efficient and can be integrated into any 3D-CNN. In addition, we introduce a consistency loss to regularize the representation space. After training, the model can successfully process video with varying temporal length without any modification in the inference phase. Our experiments on various popular action recognition datasets demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method compared to conventional training paradigm and other state-of-the-art training paradigms. The aim of this article is to introduce a novel approach to identifying flow regimes and void fractions in microchannel flow boiling, which is based on binary image segmentation using digital image processing and deep learning. The proposed image processing pipeline uses adaptive thresholding, blurring, gamma correction, contour detection, and histogram comparison to separate vapor from liquid areas, while the deep learning method uses a customized version of a convolutional neural network (CNN) called U-net to extract meaningful features from video frames. Both approaches enabled the automatic detection of flow boiling conditions, such as bubbly, slug, and annular flow, as well as automatic void fraction calculation. Especially CNN demonstrated its ability to deliver fast and dependable results, presenting an appealing substitute to manual feature extraction. The U-net-based CNN was able to segment flow boiling images with a Dice score of 99.1% and classify the above flow regimes with an overall classification accuracy of 91%. Over the coming years, the advancement of driverless transport systems for people and goods that are designed to be used on fixed routes will revolutionize the transportation system. Therefore, for a safe transportation system, detecting and recognizing traffic signals based on computer vision has become increasingly important. Deep learning approaches, particularly convolutional neural networks, have shown exceptional performance in various computer vision applications. The goal of this research is to precisely detect and recognize traffic signs that are present on the streets using computer vision and deep learning techniques. Previous work has focused on symbol-based traffic signals, where popular single-task learning models have been trained and tested. Therefore, several comparisons have been conducted to select accurate single-task learning models. For further improvement, these models are employed in a multi-task learning approach. Indeed, multi-task learning algorithms are built by sharing the convolutional layer parameters between the different tasks. Hence, for the multi-task learning approach, different experiments have been carried out using pre-trained architectures like, for instance, InceptionResNetV2 and DenseNet201. A range of traffic signs and traffic lights are employed to validate the designed model. An accuracy of 99.07% is achieved when the entire network has been trained. To further enhance the accuracy of the model for traffic signs obtained from the street, a region of interest module is added to the multi-task learning module to accurately extract the traffic signs available in the image. Weather prediction from real-world images can be termed a complex task when targeting classification using neural networks. Moreover, the number of images throughout the available datasets can contain a huge amount of variance when comparing locations with the weather those images are representing. In this article, the capabilities of a custom built driver simulator are explored specifically to simulate a wide range of weather conditions. Moreover, the performance of a new synthetic dataset generated by the above simulator is also assessed. The results indicate that the use of synthetic datasets in conjunction with real-world datasets can increase the training efficiency of the CNNs by as much as 74%. Smoke detection technology based on computer vision is a popular research direction in fire detection. This technology is widely used in outdoor fire detection fields (e.g., forest fire detection). Smoke detection is often based on features such as color, shape, texture, and motion to distinguish between smoke and non-smoke objects. However, the salience and robustness of these features are insufficiently strong, resulting in low smoke detection performance under complex environment. Deep learning technology has improved smoke detection performance to a certain degree, but extracting smoke detail features is difficult when the number of network layers is small. With no effective use of smoke motion characteristics, indicators such as false alarm rate are high in video smoke detection. To enhance the detection performance of smoke objects in videos, this paper proposes a concept of change-cumulative image by converting the YUV color space of multi-frame video images into a change-cumulative image, which can represent the motion and color-change characteristics of smoke. Then, a fusion deep network is designed, which increases the depth of the VGG16 network by arranging two convolutional layers after each of its convolutional layer. The VGG16 and Resnet50 (Deep residual network) network models are also arranged using the fusion deep network to improve feature expression ability while increasing the depth of the whole network. Doing so can help extract additional discriminating characteristics of smoke. Experimental results show that by using the change-cumulative image as the input image of the deep network model, smoke detection performance is superior to the classic RGB input image; the smoke detection performance of the fusion deep network model is better than that of the single VGG16 and Resnet50 network models; the smoke detection accuracy, false positive rate, and false alarm rate of this method are better than those of the current popular methods of video smoke detection. The potential benefits of recognising activities of daily living from video for active and assisted living have yet to be fully untapped. These technologies can be used for behaviour understanding, and lifelogging for caregivers and end users alike. The recent publication of realistic datasets for this purpose, such as the Toyota Smarthomes dataset, calls for pushing forward the efforts to improve action recognition. Using the separable spatio-temporal attention network proposed in the literature, this paper introduces a view-invariant normalisation of skeletal pose data and full activity crops for RGB data, which improve the baseline results by 9.5% (on the cross-subject experiments), outperforming state-of-the-art techniques in this field when using the original unmodified skeletal data in dataset. Websites can improve their security and protect against harmful Internet attacks by incorporating CAPTCHA verification, which assists in distinguishing between human users and robots. Among the various types of CAPTCHA, the most prevalent variant involves text-based challenges that are intentionally designed to be easily understandable by humans while presenting a difficulty for machines or robots in recognizing them. Nevertheless, due to significant advancements in deep learning, constructing convolutional neural network (CNN)-based models that possess the capability of effectively recognizing text-based CAPTCHAs has become considerably simpler. In this regard, we present a CAPTCHA recognition method that entails creating multiple duplicates of the original CAPTCHA images and generating separate binary images that encode the exact locations of each group of CAPTCHA characters. These replicated images are subsequently fed into a well-trained CNN, one after another, for obtaining the final output characters. The model possesses a straightforward architecture with a relatively small storage in system, eliminating the need for CAPTCHA segmentation into individual characters. Sign language recognition, an essential interface between the hearing and deaf-mute communities, faces challenges with high false positive rates and computational costs, even with the use of advanced deep learning techniques. Our proposed solution is a stacked encoded model, combining artificial intelligence (AI) with the Internet of Things (IoT), which refines feature extraction and classification to overcome these challenges. We leverage a lightweight backbone model for preliminary feature extraction and use stacked autoencoders to further refine these features. Our approach harnesses the scalability of big data, showing notable improvement in accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and complexity analysis. Our model's effectiveness is demonstrated through testing on the ArSL2018 benchmark dataset, showcasing superior performance compared to state-of-the-art approaches. In multi-cat households, monitoring individual cats' various behaviors is essential for diagnosing their health and ensuring their well-being. This study focuses on the defecation and urination activities of cats, and introduces an adaptive cat identification architecture based on deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) methods. The architecture comprises an object detector and a classification module, with the primary focus on the design of the classification component. The DL object detection algorithm, YOLOv4, is used for the cat object detector, with the convolutional neural network, EfficientNetV2, serving as the backbone for our feature extractor in identity classification with several ML classifiers. Additionally, to address changes in cat composition and individual cat appearances in multi-cat households, we propose an adaptive concept drift approach involving retraining the classification module. To support our research, we compile a comprehensive cat body dataset comprising 8934 images of 36 cats. After a rigorous evaluation of different combinations of DL models and classifiers, we find that the support vector machine (SVM) classifier yields the best performance, achieving an impressive identification accuracy of 94.53%. Insect monitoring methods are typically very time-consuming and involve substantial investment in species identification following manual trapping in the field. Insect traps are often only serviced weekly, resulting in low temporal resolution of the monitoring data, which hampers the ecological interpretation. This paper presents a portable computer vision system capable of attracting and detecting live insects. More specifically, the paper proposes detection and classification of species by recording images of live individuals attracted to a light trap. An Automated Moth Trap (AMT) with multiple light sources and a camera was designed to attract and monitor live insects during twilight and night hours. A computer vision algorithm referred to as Moth Classification and Counting (MCC), based on deep learning analysis of the captured images, tracked and counted the number of insects and identified moth species. Observations over 48 nights resulted in the capture of more than 250,000 images with an average of 5675 images per night. A customized convolutional neural network was trained on 2000 labeled images of live moths represented by eight different classes, achieving a high validation F 1 -score of 0.93. The algorithm measured an average classification and tracking F 1 -score of 0.71 and a tracking detection rate of 0.79. Due to deep learning's accurate cognition of the street environment, the convolutional neural network has achieved dramatic development in the application of street scenes. Considering the needs of autonomous driving and assisted driving, in a general way, computer vision technology is used to find obstacles to avoid collisions, which has made semantic segmentation a research priority in recent years. However, semantic segmentation has been constantly facing new challenges for quite a long time. Complex network depth information, large datasets, real-time requirements, etc., are typical problems that need to be solved urgently in the realization of autonomous driving technology. In order to address these problems, we propose an improved lightweight real-time semantic segmentation network, which is based on an efficient image cascading network (ICNet) architecture, using multi-scale branches and a cascaded feature fusion unit to extract rich multi-level features. In this paper, a spatial information network is designed to transmit more prior knowledge of spatial location and edge information. During the course of the training phase, we append an external loss function to enhance the learning process of the deep learning network system as well. This lightweight network can quickly perceive obstacles and detect roads in the drivable area from images to satisfy autonomous driving characteristics. The proposed model shows substantial performance on the Cityscapes dataset. With the premise of ensuring real-time performance, several sets of experimental comparisons illustrate that SP-ICNet enhances the accuracy of road obstacle detection and provides nearly ideal prediction outputs. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been very effective in collecting aerial images data for various Internet-of-Things (IoT)/smart cities applications such as search and rescue, surveillance, vehicle detection, counting, intelligent transportation systems, to name a few. However, the real-time processing of collected data on edge in the context of the Internet-of-Drones remains an open challenge because UAVs have limited energy capabilities, while computer vision techniquesconsume excessive energy and require abundant resources. This fact is even more critical when deep learning algorithms, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), are used for classification and detection. In this paper, we first propose a system architecture of computation offloading for Internet-connected drones. Then, we conduct a comprehensive experimental study to evaluate the performance in terms of energy, bandwidth, and delay of the cloud computation offloading approach versus the edge computing approach of deep learning applications in the context of UAVs. In particular, we investigate the tradeoff between the communication cost and the computation of the two candidate approaches experimentally. The main results demonstrate that the computation offloading approach allows us to provide much higher throughput (i.e., frames per second) as compared to the edge computing approach, despite the larger communication delays. The intelligent crack detection method is an important guarantee for the realization of intelligent operation and maintenance, and it is of great significance to traffic safety. In recent years, the recognition of road pavement cracks based on computer vision has attracted increasing attention. With the technological breakthroughs of general deep learning algorithms in recent years, detection algorithms based on deep learning and convolutional neural networks have achieved better results in the field of crack recognition. In this paper, deep learning is investigated to intelligently detect road cracks, and Faster R-CNN and Mask R-CNN are compared and analyzed. The results show that the joint training strategy is very effective, and we are able to ensure that both Faster R-CNN and Mask R-CNN complete the crack detection task when trained with only 130+ images and can outperform YOLOv3. Regarding the interpretable techniques in the field of image recognition, Grad-CAM is widely used for feature localization in images to reflect the logical decision-making information behind the neural network due to its high applicability. However, extensive experimentation on a customized dataset revealed that the deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model based on Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) technology cannot effectively resist the interference of large-scale noise. In this article, an optimization of the deep CNN model was proposed by incorporating the Dropkey and Dropout (as a comparison) algorithm. Compared with Grad-CAM, the improved Grad-CAM based on Dropkey applies an attention mechanism to the feature map before calculating the gradient, which can introduce randomness and eliminate some areas by applying a mask to the attention score. Experimental results show that the optimized Grad-CAM deep CNN model based on the Dropkey algorithm can effectively resist large-scale noise interference and achieve accurate localization of image features. For instance, under the interference of a noise variance of 0.6, the Dropkey-enhanced ResNet50 model achieves a confidence level of 0.878 in predicting results, while the other two models exhibit confidence levels of 0.766 and 0.481, respectively. Moreover, it exhibits excellent performance in visualizing tasks related to image features such as distortion, low contrast, and small object characteristics. Hand gesture recognition is a vital means of communication to convey information between humans and machines. We propose a novel model for hand gesture recognition based on computer vision methods and compare results based on images with complex scenes. While extracting skin color information is an efficient method to determine hand regions, complicated image backgrounds adversely affect recognizing the exact area of the hand shape. Some valuable features like saliency maps, histogram of oriented gradients (HOG), Canny edge detection, and skin color help us maximize the accuracy of hand shape recognition. Considering these features, we proposed an efficient hand posture detection model that improves the test accuracy results to over 99% on the NUS Hand Posture Dataset II and more than 97% on the hand gesture dataset with different challenging backgrounds. In addition, we added noise to around 60% of our datasets. Replicating our experiment, we achieved more than 98% and nearly 97% accuracy on NUS and hand gesture datasets, respectively. Too often, the testing and evaluation of object detection, as well as the classification techniques for high-resolution remote sensing imagery, are confined to clean, discretely partitioned datasets, i.e., the closed-world model. In recent years, the performance on a number of benchmark datasets has exceeded 99% when evaluated using cross-validation techniques. However, real-world remote sensing data are truly big data, which often exceed billions of pixels. Therefore, one of the greatest challenges regarding the evaluation of machine learning models taken out of the clean laboratory setting and into the real world is the difficulty of measuring performance. It is necessary to evaluate these models on a grander scale, namely, tens of thousands of square kilometers, where it is intractable to the ground truth and the ever-changing anthropogenic surface of Earth. The ultimate goal of computer vision model development for automated analysis and broad area search and discovery is to augment and assist humans, specifically human–machine teaming for real-world tasks. In this research, various models have been trained using object classes from benchmark datasets such as UC Merced, PatternNet, RESISC-45, and MDSv2. We detail techniques to scan broad swaths of the Earth with deep convolutional neural networks. We present algorithms for localizing object detection results, as well as a methodology for the evaluation of the results of broad-area scans. Our research explores the challenges of transitioning these models out of the training–validation laboratory setting and into the real-world application domain. We show a scalable approach to leverage state-of-the-art deep convolutional neural networks for the search, detection, and annotation of objects within large swaths of imagery, with the ultimate goal of providing a methodology for evaluating object detection machine learning models in real-world scenarios. Edge detection is a crucial step in many computer vision tasks, and in recent years, models based on deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved human-level performance in edge detection. However, we have observed that CNN-based methods rely on pre-trained backbone networks and generate edge images with unwanted background details. We propose four new fusion difference convolution (FDC) structures that integrate traditional gradient operators into modern CNNs. At the same time, we have also added a channel spatial attention module (CSAM) and an up-sampling module (US). These structures allow the model to better recognize the semantic and edge information in the images. Our model is trained from scratch on the BIPED dataset without any pre-trained weights and achieves promising results. Moreover, it generalizes well to other datasets without fine-tuning. One of the primary causes of fires at construction sites is welding sparks. Fire detection systems utilizing computer vision technology offer a unique opportunity to monitor fires in construction sites. However, little effort has been made to date in regard to real-time tracking of small sparks that can lead to major fires at construction sites. In this study, a novel method is proposed to detect welding sparks in real-time contour detection with deep learning parameter tuning. An automatic parameter tuning algorithm employing a convolutional neural network was developed to identify the optimum hue saturation value. Additional filtering methods regarding the non-welding zone and a contour area-based filter were also newly developed to enhance the accuracy of welding spark prediction. The method was evaluated using 230 welding spark images and 104 videos. The results obtained from the welding images indicate that the suggested model for detecting welding sparks achieves a precision of 74.45% and a recall of 63.50% when noise images, such as flashing and reflection light, were removed from the dataset. Furthermore, our findings demonstrate that the proposed model is effective in capturing the number of welding sparks in the video dataset, with a 95.2% accuracy in detecting the moment when the number of welding sparks reaches its peak. Underwater video surveys play a significant role in marine benthic research. Usually, surveys are filmed in transects, which are stitched into 2D mosaic maps for further analysis. Due to the massive amount of video data and time-consuming analysis, the need for automatic image segmentation and quantitative evaluation arises. This paper investigates such techniques on annotated mosaic maps containing hundreds of instances of brittle stars. By harnessing a deep convolutional neural network with pre-trained weights and post-processing results with a common blob detection technique, we investigate the effectiveness and potential of such segment-and-count approach by assessing the segmentation and counting success. Discs could be recommended instead of full shape masks for brittle stars due to faster annotation among marker variants tested. Underwater image enhancement techniques could not improve segmentation results noticeably, but some might be useful for augmentation purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper's core objective is to develop and validate a new neurocomputing model to classify document images in particularly demanding hard conditions such as image distortions, image size variance and scale, a huge number of classes, etc. Document classification is a special machine vision task in which document images are categorized according to their likelihood. Document classification is by itself an important topic for the digital office and it has several usages. Additionally, different methods for solving this problem have been presented in various studies; their respectively reached performance is however not yet good enough. This task is very tough and challenging. Thus, a novel, more accurate and precise model is needed. Although the related works do reach acceptable accuracy values for less hard conditions, they generally fully fail in the face of those above-mentioned hard, real-world conditions, including, amongst others, distortions such as noise, blur, low contrast, and shadows. In this paper, a novel deep CNN model is developed, validated and benchmarked with a selection of the most relevant recent document classification models. Additionally, the model's sensitivity was significantly improved by injecting different artifacts during the training process.
