In this paper, the paper cups were used as the research objects, and the machine vision detection technology was combined with different image processing techniques to investigate a non-contact optical automatic detection system to identify the defects of the manufactured paper cups. The combined ring light was used as the light source, an infrared (IR) LED matrix panel was used to provide the IR light to constantly highlight the outer edges of the detected objects, and a multi-grid pixel array was used as the image sensor. The image processing techniques, including the Gaussian filter, Sobel operator, Binarization process, and connected component, were used to enhance the inspection and recognition of the defects existing in the produced paper cups. There were three different detection processes for paper cups, which were divided into internal, external, and bottom image acquisition processes. The present study demonstrated that all the detection processes could clearly detect the surface defect features of the manufactured paper cups, such as dirt, burrs, holes, and uneven thickness. The Internet of Things (IoT), projected to exceed 30 billion active device connections globally by 2025, presents an expansive attack surface. The frequent collection and dissemination of confidential data on these devices exposes them to significant security risks, including user information theft and denial-of-service attacks. This paper introduces a smart, network-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS) designed to protect IoT networks from distributed denial-of-service attacks. Our methodology involves generating synthetic images from flow-level traffic data of the Bot-IoT and the LATAM-DDoS-IoT datasets and conducting experiments within both supervised and self-supervised learning paradigms. Self-supervised learning is identified in the state of the art as a promising solution to replace the need for massive amounts of manually labeled data, as well as providing robust generalization. Our results showcase that self-supervised learning surpassed supervised learning in terms of classification performance for certain tests. Specifically, it exceeded the F1 score of supervised learning for attack detection by 4.83% and by 14.61% in accuracy for the multiclass task of protocol classification. Drawing from extensive ablation studies presented in our research, we recommend an optimal training framework for upcoming contrastive learning experiments that emphasize visual representations in the cybersecurity realm. This training approach has enabled us to highlight the broader applicability of self-supervised learning, which, in some instances, outperformed supervised learning transferability by over 5% in precision and nearly 1% in F1 score. Railway transportation has been integrated into people's lives. According to the "Notice on the release of the General Technical Specification of High-speed Railway Power Supply Safety Testing (6C System) System" issued by the National Railway Administration of China in 2012, it is required to install pantograph and slide monitoring devices in high-speed railway stations, station throats and the inlet and exit lines of high-speed railway sections, and it is required to detect the damage of the slider with high precision. It can be seen that the good condition of the pantograph slider is very important for the normal operation of the railway system. As a part of providing power for high-speed rail and subway, the pantograph must be paid attention to in railway transportation to ensure its integrity. The wear of the pantograph is mainly due to the contact power supply between the slide block and the long wire during high-speed operation, which inevitably produces scratches, resulting in depressions on the upper surface of the pantograph slide block. During long-term use, because the depression is too deep, there is a risk of fracture. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the slider regularly and replace the slider with serious wear. At present, most of the traditional methods use automation technology or simple computer vision technology for detection, which is inefficient. Therefore, this paper introduces computer vision and deep learning technology into pantograph slide wear detection. Specifically, this paper mainly studies the wear detection of the pantograph slider based on deep learning and the main purpose is to improve the detection accuracy and improve the effect of segmentation. From a methodological perspective, this paper employs a linear array camera to enhance the quality of the data sets. Additionally, it integrates an attention mechanism to improve segmentation performance. For automated quayside container cranes, accurate measurement of the three-dimensional positioning and attitude of the container spreader is crucial for the safe and efficient transfer of containers. This paper proposes a high-precision measurement method for the spreader's three-dimensional position and rotational angles based on a single vertically mounted fixed-focus visual camera. Firstly, an image preprocessing method is proposed for complex port environments. The improved YOLOv5 network, enhanced with an attention mechanism, increases the detection accuracy of the spreader's keypoints and the container lock holes. Combined with image morphological processing methods, the three-dimensional position and rotational angle changes of the spreader are measured. Compared to traditional detection methods, the single-camera-based method for three-dimensional positioning and attitude measurement of the spreader employed in this paper achieves higher detection accuracy for spreader keypoints and lock holes in experiments and improves the operational speed of single operations in actual tests, making it a feasible measurement approach. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based object detection methods are widely used in traffic detection due to their high flexibility and extensive coverage. In recent years, with the increasing complexity of the urban road environment, UAV object detection algorithms based on deep learning have gradually become a research hotspot. However, how to further improve algorithmic efficiency in response to the numerous and rapidly changing road elements, and thus achieve high-speed and accurate road object detection, remains a challenging issue. Given this context, this paper proposes the high-efficiency multi-object detection algorithm for UAVs (HeMoDU). HeMoDU reconstructs a state-of-the-art, deep-learning-based object detection model and optimizes several aspects to improve computational efficiency and detection accuracy. To validate the performance of HeMoDU in urban road environments, this paper uses the public urban road datasets VisDrone2019 and UA-DETRAC for evaluation. Physical aggression is a serious and widespread problem in society, affecting people worldwide. It impacts nearly every aspect of life. While some studies explore the root causes of violent behavior, others focus on urban planning in high-crime areas. Real-time violence detection, powered by artificial intelligence, offers a direct and efficient solution, reducing the need for extensive human supervision and saving lives. This paper is a continuation of a systematic mapping study and its objective is to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date review of AI-based video violence detection, specifically in physical assaults. Regarding violence detection, the following have been grouped and categorized from the review of the selected papers: 21 challenges that remain to be solved, 28 datasets that have been created in recent years, 21 keyframe extraction methods, 16 types of algorithm inputs, as well as a wide variety of algorithm combinations and their corresponding accuracy results. Scene text detection is an important research field in computer vision, playing a crucial role in various application scenarios. However, existing scene text detection methods often fail to achieve satisfactory results when faced with text instances of different sizes, shapes, and complex backgrounds. To address the challenge of detecting diverse texts in natural scenes, this paper proposes a multi-scale natural scene text detection method based on attention feature extraction and cascaded feature fusion. This method combines global and local attention through an improved attention feature fusion module (DSAF) to capture text features of different scales, enhancing the network's perception of text regions and improving its feature extraction capabilities. Simultaneously, an improved cascaded feature fusion module (PFFM) is used to fully integrate the extracted feature maps, expanding the receptive field of features and enriching the expressive ability of the feature maps. Finally, to address the cascaded feature maps, a lightweight subspace attention module (SAM) is introduced to partition the concatenated feature maps into several sub-space feature maps, facilitating spatial information interaction among features of different scales. In this paper, comparative experiments are conducted on the ICDAR2015, Total-Text, and MSRA-TD500 datasets, and comparisons are made with some existing scene text detection methods. Outdoor positioning has become a ubiquitous technology, leading to the proliferation of many location-based services such as automotive navigation and asset tracking. Meanwhile, indoor positioning is an emerging technology with many potential applications. Researchers are continuously working towards improving its accuracy, and one general approach to achieve this goal includes using machine learning to combine input data from multiple available sources, such as camera imagery. For this active research area, we conduct a systematic literature review and identify around 40 relevant research papers. We analyze contributions describing indoor positioning methods based on multimodal data, which involves combinations of images with motion sensors, radio interfaces, and LiDARs. In the field of industrial inspection, accurate detection of thread quality is crucial for ensuring mechanical performance. Existing machine-vision-based methods for internal thread defect detection often face challenges in efficient detection and sufficient model training samples due to the influence of mechanical geometric features. This paper introduces a novel image acquisition structure, proposes a data augmentation algorithm based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to effectively construct high-quality training sets, and employs a YOLO algorithm to achieve internal thread defect detection. Through multi-metric evaluation and comparison with external threads, high-similarity internal thread image generation is achieved. In infrared detection scenarios, detecting and recognizing low-contrast and small-sized targets has always been a challenge in the field of computer vision, particularly in complex road traffic environments. Traditional target detection methods usually perform poorly when processing infrared small targets, mainly due to their inability to effectively extract key features and the significant feature loss that occurs during feature transmission. To address these issues, this paper proposes a fast detection and recognition model based on a multi-scale self-attention mechanism, specifically for small road targets in infrared detection scenarios. We first introduce and improve the DyHead structure based on the YOLOv8 algorithm, which employs a multi-head self-attention mechanism to capture target features at various scales and enhance the model's perception of small targets. Additionally, to prevent information loss during the feature transmission process via the FPN structure in traditional YOLO algorithms, this paper introduces and enhances the Gather-and-Distribute Mechanism. By computing dependencies between features using self-attention, it reallocates attention weights in the feature maps to highlight important features and suppress irrelevant information. These improvements significantly enhance the model's capability to detect small targets. Moreover, to further increase detection speed, we pruned the network architecture to reduce computational complexity and parameter count, making the model suitable for real-time processing scenarios. Experiments on our self built infrared road traffic dataset (mainly including two types of targets: vehicles and people) show that compared with the baseline, our method achieves a 3.1% improvement in AP and a 2.5% increase in mAP on the VisDrone2019 dataset, showing significant enhancements in both detection accuracy and processing speed for small targets, with improved robustness and adaptability. This work presents a novel approach to enhancing iris recognition systems through a two-module approach focusing on low-level image preprocessing techniques and advanced feature extraction. The primary contributions of this paper include: (i) the development of a robust preprocessing module utilizing the Canny algorithm for edge detection and the circle-based Hough transform for precise iris extraction, and (ii) the implementation of Binary Statistical Image Features (BSIF) with domain-specific filters trained on iris-specific data for improved biometric identification. By combining these advanced image preprocessing techniques, the proposed method addresses key challenges in iris recognition, such as occlusions, varying pigmentation, and textural diversity. Experimental results on the Human-inspired Domain-specific Binarized Image Features (HDBIF) Dataset, consisting of 1892 iris images, confirm the significant enhancements achieved. The idea of the person re-identification (Re-ID) task is to find the person depicted in the query image among other images obtained from different cameras. Algorithms solving this task have important practical applications, such as illegal action prevention and searching for missing persons through a smart city's video surveillance. In most of the papers devoted to the problem under consideration, the authors propose complex algorithms to achieve a better quality of person Re-ID. Some of these methods cannot be used in practice due to technical limitations. In this paper, we propose several approaches that can be used in almost all popular modern re-identification algorithms to improve the quality of the problem being solved and do not practically increase the computational complexity of algorithms. In real-world data, bad images can be fed into the input of the Re-ID algorithm; therefore, the new Filter Module is proposed in this paper, designed to pre-filter input data before feeding the data to the main re-identification algorithm. The Filter Module improves the quality of the baseline by 2.6 % according to the R a n k 1 metric and 3.4 % according to the m A P metric on the Market-1501 dataset. Furthermore, in this paper, a fully automated data collection strategy from surveillance cameras for self-supervised pre-training is proposed in order to increase the generality of neural networks on real-world data. The use of self-supervised pre-training on the data collected using the proposed strategy improves the quality of cross-domain upper-body Re-ID on the DukeMTMC-reID dataset by 1.0 % according to the R a n k 1 and m A P metrics. The purpose of image dehazing is to remove the interference from weather factors in degraded images and enhance the clarity and color saturation of images to maximize the restoration of useful features. Single image dehazing is one of the most important tasks in the field of image restoration. In recent years, due to the progress of deep learning, single image dehazing has made great progress. With the success of Transformer in advanced computer vision tasks, some research studies also began to apply Transformer to image dehazing tasks and obtained surprising results. However, both the deconvolution-neural-network-based dehazing algorithm and Transformer based dehazing algorithm magnify their advantages and disadvantages separately. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel Transformer–Convolution fusion dehazing network (TCFDN), which uses Transformer's global modeling ability and convolutional neural network's local modeling ability to improve the dehazing ability. In the Transformer–Convolution fusion dehazing network, the classic self-encoder structure is used. This paper proposes a Transformer–Convolution hybrid layer, which uses an adaptive fusion strategy to make full use of the Swin-Transformer and convolutional neural network to extract and reconstruct image features. On the basis of previous research, this layer further improves the ability of the network to remove haze. A series of contrast experiments and ablation experiments not only proved that the Transformer–Convolution fusion dehazing network proposed in this paper exceeded the more advanced dehazing algorithm, but also provided solid and powerful evidence for the basic theory on which it depends. Accelerometers are commonly used to measure vibrations for condition monitoring in mechanical and civil structures; however, their high cost and point-based measurement approach present practical limitations. With rapid advancements in computer vision and deep learning, research into tracking the motion of individual pixels with vision cameras has increased. The recently developed CoTracker, a transformer-based model, has demonstrated excellence in motion tracking, yet its performance in measuring structural vibrations has not been fully explored. This paper investigates the efficacy of the CoTracker model in extracting full-field structural vibrations using cameras. It is initially applied to capture the dense point movements in video sequences of a cantilever beam recorded using a high-speed camera. Subsequently, modal analysis using delay-embedding dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) is conducted to extract modal parameters including natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes. The results, benchmarked against those from a reference accelerometer and the Finite Element Method (FEM) result, demonstrate CoTracker's high potential for general applicability in structural vibration measurements. Emotion recognition has become increasingly important in the field of Deep Learning (DL) and computer vision due to its broad applicability by using human–computer interaction (HCI) in areas such as psychology, healthcare, and entertainment. In this paper, we conduct a systematic review of facial and pose emotion recognition using DL and computer vision, analyzing and evaluating 77 papers from different sources under Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Our review covers several topics, including the scope and purpose of the studies, the methods employed, and the used datasets. The scope of this work is to conduct a systematic review of facial and pose emotion recognition using DL methods and computer vision. The studies were categorized based on a proposed taxonomy that describes the type of expressions used for emotion detection, the testing environment, the currently relevant DL methods, and the datasets used. The taxonomy of methods in our review includes Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (R-CNN), Vision Transformer (ViT), and "Other NNs", which are the most commonly used models in the analyzed studies, indicating their trendiness in the field. Hybrid and augmented models are not explicitly categorized within this taxonomy, but they are still important to the field. This review offers an understanding of state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms and datasets for emotion recognition through facial expressions and body poses, allowing researchers to understand its fundamental components and trends. Object detection is one of the core technologies for autonomous driving. Current road object detection mainly relies on visible light, which is prone to missed detections and false alarms in rainy, night-time, and foggy scenes. Multispectral object detection based on the fusion of RGB and infrared images can effectively address the challenges of complex and changing road scenes, improving the detection performance of current algorithms in complex scenarios. However, previous multispectral detection algorithms suffer from issues such as poor fusion of dual-mode information, poor detection performance for multi-scale objects, and inadequate utilization of semantic information. To address these challenges and enhance the detection performance in complex road scenes, this paper proposes a novel multispectral object detection algorithm called MRD-YOLO. In MRD-YOLO, we utilize interaction-based feature extraction to effectively fuse information and introduce the BIC-Fusion module with attention guidance to fuse different modal information. We also incorporate the SAConv module to improve the model's detection performance for multi-scale objects and utilize the AIFI structure to enhance the utilization of semantic information. Finally, we conduct experiments on two major public datasets, FLIR_Aligned and M3FD. This paper presents a computer vision-based approach to chronic subdural hematoma segmentation that can be performed by one click. Chronic subdural hematoma is estimated to occur in 0.002–0.02% of the general population each year and the risk increases with age, with a high frequency of about 0.05–0.06% in people aged 70 years and above. In our research, we developed our own dataset, which includes 53 series of CT scans collected from 21 patients with one or two hematomas. Based on the dataset, we trained two neural network models based on U-Net architecture to automate the manual segmentation process. One of the models performed segmentation based only on the current frame, while the other additionally processed multiple adjacent images to provide context, a technique that is more similar to the behavior of a doctor. We used a 10-fold cross-validation technique to better estimate the developed models' efficiency. We used the Dice metric for segmentation accuracy estimation, which was 0.77. Also, for testing our approach, we used scans from five additional patients who did not form part of the dataset, and created a scenario in which three medical experts carried out a hematoma segmentation before we carried out segmentation using our best model. We developed the OsiriX DICOM Viewer plugin to implement our solution into the segmentation process. We compared the segmentation time, which was more than seven times faster using the one-click approach, and the experts agreed that the segmentation quality was acceptable for clinical usage. This paper introduces a machine vision method for measuring the blade tip clearance in a wind turbine. An industrial personal computer (IPC) is installed in the nacelle of the wind turbine to continuously receive video data from a digital camera mounted at the bottom of the nacelle. Using the open-source computer vision (OpenCV) digital image processing library data base, the real-time trajectory of the turbine blades is determined from the video data. Furthermore, fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis is performed for determining the operating frequency of the blades in the images. The amplitude analysis performed at this operating frequency reveals the pixel-based blade tip clearance, which is then used to calculate the actual clearance of the wind turbine. This value is subsequently transmitted to the main controller of the wind turbine. The main controller can enhance the operational safety of the wind turbine by implementing appropriate pitch control strategies to restrict and safeguard the blade tip clearance. The results obtained by conducting experiments on a 2.0 MW wind turbine unit validate the effectiveness of the proposed identification method. In this method, the blade tip clearance can be calculated effectively in real time, and both the video sampling rate and communication speed meet the requirements for controlling the blade pitch. Potholes and other road surface damages pose significant risks to vehicles and traffic safety. The current methods of in situ visual inspection for potholes or cracks are inefficient, costly, and hazardous. Therefore, there is a pressing need to develop automated systems for assessing road surface conditions, aiming to efficiently and accurately reconstruct, recognize, and locate potholes. In recent years, various methods utilizing (a) computer vision, (b) three-dimensional (3D) point clouds, or (c) smartphone data have been employed to map road surface quality conditions. Machine learning and deep learning techniques have increasingly enhanced the performance of these methods. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of cutting-edge computer vision and machine learning algorithms for pothole detection. It covers topics such as sensing systems for acquiring two-dimensional (2D) and 3D road data, classical algorithms based on 2D image processing, segmentation-based algorithms using 3D point cloud modeling, machine learning, deep learning algorithms, and hybrid approaches. The review highlights that hybrid methods combining traditional image processing and advanced machine learning techniques offer the highest accuracy in pothole detection. Machine learning approaches, particularly deep learning, demonstrate superior adaptability and detection rates, while traditional 2D and 3D methods provide valuable baseline techniques. By reviewing and evaluating existing vision-based methods, this paper clarifies the current landscape of pothole detection technologies and identifies opportunities for future research and development. Water leakage defects often occur in underground structures, leading to accelerated structural aging and threatening structural safety. Leakage identification can detect early diseases of underground structures and provide important guidance for reinforcement and maintenance. Deep learning-based computer vision methods have been rapidly developed and widely used in many fields. However, establishing a deep learning model for underground structure leakage identification usually requires a lot of training data on leakage defects, which is very expensive. To overcome the data shortage, a deep neural network method for leakage identification is developed based on transfer learning in this paper. For comparison, four famous classification models, including VGG16, AlexNet, SqueezeNet, and ResNet18, are constructed. To train the classification models, a transfer learning strategy is developed, and a dataset of underground structure leakage is created. Finally, the classification performance on the leakage dataset of different deep learning models is comparatively studied under different sizes of training data. The results showed that the VGG16, AlexNet, and SqueezeNet models with transfer learning can overall provide higher and more stable classification performance on the leakage dataset than those without transfer learning. The ResNet18 model with transfer learning can overall provide a similar value of classification performance on the leakage dataset than that without transfer learning, but its classification performance is more stable than that without transfer learning. Pose estimation is crucial for ensuring passenger safety and better user experiences in semi- and fully autonomous vehicles. Traditional methods relying on pose estimation from regular color images face significant challenges due to a lack of three-dimensional (3D) information and the sensitivity to occlusion and lighting conditions. Depth images, which are invariant to lighting issues and provide 3D information about the scene, offer a promising alternative. However, there is a lack of strong work in 3D pose estimation from such images due to the time-consuming process of annotating depth images with 3D postures. In this paper, we present a novel approach to 3D human posture estimation using depth and infrared (IR) images. Our method leverages a three-stage fine-tuning process involving simulation data, approximated data, and a limited set of manually annotated samples. This approach allows us to effectively train a model capable of accurate 3D pose estimation with a median error of under 10 cm across all joints, using fewer than 100 manually annotated samples. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work focusing on vehicle occupant posture detection utilizing only depth and IR data. Precise measurement of fiber diameter in animal and synthetic textiles is crucial for quality assessment and pricing; however, traditional methods often struggle with accuracy, particularly when fibers are densely packed or overlapping. Current computer vision techniques, while useful, have limitations in addressing these challenges. This paper introduces a novel deep-learning-based method to automatically generate distance maps of fiber micrographs, enabling more accurate fiber segmentation and diameter calculation. Our approach utilizes a modified U-Net architecture, trained on both real and simulated micrographs, to regress distance maps. This allows for the effective separation of individual fibers, even in complex scenarios. The model achieves a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.1094 and a mean square error (MSE) of 0.0711 , demonstrating its effectiveness in accurately measuring fiber diameters. Time of flight is promising technology in machine vision and sensing, with an emerging need for low power consumption, a high image resolution, and reliable operation in high ambient light conditions. Therefore, we propose a novel direct time-of-flight pixel using the single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) sensor, with an in-pixel averaging method to suppress ambient light and detect the laser pulse arrival time. The system utilizes two orthogonal sinusoidal signals applied to the pixel as inputs, which are synchronized with a pulsed laser source. The detected signal phase indicates the arrival time. To evaluate the proposed system's potential, we developed analytical and statistical models for assessing the phase error and precision of the arrival time under varying ambient light levels. The pixel simulation showed that the phase precision is less than 1% of the detection range when the ambient-to-signal ratio is 120. A proof-of-concept pixel array prototype was fabricated and characterized to validate the system's performance. The pixel consumed, on average, 40 μ W of power in operation with ambient light. The results demonstrate that the system can operate effectively under varying ambient light conditions and its potential for customization based on specific application requirements. Six-dimensional object pose estimation is a fundamental problem in the field of computer vision. Recently, category-level object pose estimation methods based on 3D-GC have made significant breakthroughs due to advancements in 3D-GC. However, current methods often fail to capture long-range dependencies, which are crucial for modeling complex and occluded object shapes. Additionally, discerning detailed differences between different objects is essential. Some existing methods utilize self-attention mechanisms or Transformer encoder–decoder structures to address the lack of long-range dependencies, but they only focus on first-order information of features, failing to explore more complex information and neglecting detailed differences between objects. In this paper, we propose SAPENet, which follows the 3D-GC architecture but replaces the 3D-GC in the encoder part with HS-layer to extract features and incorporates statistical attention to compute higher-order statistical information. Additionally, three sub-modules are designed for pose regression, point cloud reconstruction, and bounding box voting. The pose regression module also integrates statistical attention to leverage higher-order statistical information for modeling geometric relationships and aiding regression. Experiments demonstrate that our method achieves outstanding performance, attaining an mAP of 49.5 on the 5°2 cm metric, which is 3.4 higher than the baseline model. Abnormal valve positions can lead to fluctuations in the process industry, potentially triggering serious accidents. For processes that frequently require operational switching, such as green chemical processes based on renewable energy or biotechnological fermentation processes, this issue becomes even more severe. Despite this risk, many plants still rely on manual inspections to check valve status. The widespread use of cameras in large plants now makes it feasible to monitor valve positions through computer vision technology. This paper proposes a novel real-time valve monitoring approach based on computer vision to detect abnormalities in valve positions. Utilizing an improved network architecture based on YOLO V8, the method performs valve detection and feature recognition. To address the challenge of small, relatively fixed-position valves in the images, a coord attention module is introduced, embedding position information into the feature channels and enhancing the accuracy of valve rotation feature extraction. The valve position is then calculated using a rotation algorithm with the valve's center point and bounding box coordinates, triggering an alarm for valves that exceed a pre-set threshold. The accuracy and generalization ability of the proposed approach are evaluated through experiments on three different types of valves in two industrial scenarios. Poplar (Populus) trees play a vital role in various industries and in environmental sustainability. They are widely used for paper production, timber, and as windbreaks, in addition to their significant contributions to carbon sequestration. Given their economic and ecological importance, effective disease management is essential. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), particularly adept at processing visual information, are crucial for the accurate detection and classification of plant diseases. This study introduces a novel dataset of manually collected images of diseased poplar leaves from Uzbekistan and South Korea, enhancing the geographic diversity and application of the dataset. The disease classes consist of "Parsha (Scab)", "Brown-spotting", "White-Gray spotting", and "Rust", reflecting common afflictions in these regions. This dataset will be made publicly available to support ongoing research efforts. Employing the advanced YOLOv8 model, a state-of-the-art CNN architecture, we applied a Contrast Stretching technique prior to model training in order to enhance disease detection accuracy. This approach not only improves the model's diagnostic capabilities but also offers a scalable tool for monitoring and treating poplar diseases, thereby supporting the health and sustainability of these critical resources. Vision-based techniques have become widely applied in structural displacement monitoring. However, heat haze poses a great threat to the precision of vision systems by creating distortions in the images. This paper proposes a vision-based bridge displacement measurement technique with heat haze mitigation capability. The properties of heat haze-induced errors are illustrated. A dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) is used to mitigate the heat haze in images, and the speeded-up robust features (SURF) algorithm is employed to extract the displacement. The proposed method is validated through indoor experiments on a bridge model. The designed vision system achieves high measurement accuracy in a heat haze-free condition. Camera-based object detection is integral to advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicle research, and RGB cameras remain indispensable for their spatial resolution and color information. This study investigates exposure time optimization for such cameras, considering image quality in dynamic ADAS scenarios. Exposure time, the period during which the camera sensor is exposed to light, directly influences the amount of information captured. In dynamic scenarios, such as those encountered in typical driving scenarios, optimizing exposure time becomes challenging due to the inherent trade-off between Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and motion blur, i.e., extending exposure time to maximize information capture increases SNR, but also increases the risk of motion blur and overexposure, particularly in low-light conditions where objects may not be fully illuminated. The study introduces a comprehensive methodology for exposure time optimization under various lighting conditions, examining its impact on image quality and computer vision performance. Traditional image quality metrics show a poor correlation with computer vision performance, highlighting the need for newer metrics that demonstrate improved correlation. This paper presents computer and color vision research focusing on human color perception in VR environments. A VR art gallery with digital twins of original artworks is created for this experiment. In this research, the field of colorimetry and the application of the L*a*b* and RGB color models are applied. The inter-relationships of the two color models are applied to create a color modification of the VR art gallery environment using C# Script procedures. This color-edited VR environment works with a smooth change in color tone in a given time interval. At the same time, a sudden change in the color of the RGB environment is defined in this interval. This experiment aims to record a user's reaction embedded in a VR environment and the effect of color changes on human perception in a VR environment. This research uses lie detector sensors that record the physiological changes of the user embedded in VR. Five sensors are used to record the signal. An experiment on the influence of the user's color perception in a VR environment using lie detector sensors has never been conducted. Computer Vision (CV) has become increasingly important for Single-Board Computers (SBCs) due to their widespread deployment in addressing real-world problems. Specifically, in the context of smart cities, there is an emerging trend of developing end-to-end video analytics solutions designed to address urban challenges such as traffic management, disaster response, and waste management. However, deploying CV solutions on SBCs presents several pressing challenges (e.g., limited computation power, inefficient energy management, and real-time processing needs) hindering their use at scale. Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) and software-level developments have emerged recently in addressing these challenges to enable the elevated performance of SBCs; however, it is still an active area of research. There is a gap in the literature for a comprehensive review of such recent and rapidly evolving advancements on both software and hardware fronts. The presented review provides a detailed overview of the existing GPU-accelerated edge-computing SBCs and software advancements including algorithm optimization techniques, packages, development frameworks, and hardware deployment specific packages. This review provides a subjective comparative analysis based on critical factors to help applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) researchers in demonstrating the existing state of the art and selecting the best suited combinations for their specific use-case. Machine vision is a desirable non-contact measurement method for hot forgings, as image segmentation has been a challenging issue in performance and robustness resulting from the diversity of working conditions for hot forgings. Thus, this paper proposes an efficient and robust active contour model and corresponding image segmentation approach for forging images, by which verification experiments are conducted to prove the performance of the segmentation method by measuring geometric parameters for forging parts. Specifically, three types of continuity parameters are defined based on the geometric continuity of equivalent grayscale surfaces for forging images; hence, a new image force and external energy functional are proposed to form a new active contour model, Geometric Continuity Snakes (GC Snakes), which is more percipient to the grayscale distribution characteristics of forging images to improve the convergence for active contour robustly; additionally, a generating strategy for initial control points for GC Snakes is proposed to compose an efficient and robust image segmentation approach. The experimental results show that the proposed GC Snakes has better segmentation performance compared with existing active contour models for forging images of different temperatures and sizes, which provides better performance and efficiency in geometric parameter measurement for hot forgings. Given the huge demand for wire in today's society, the quality of the wire is especially required. To control the quality of the produced wire, the industry has a great desire for automated optical inspection technology. This technology is a high-speed and highly accurate optical image inspection system that uses mechanical sensing equipment to replace the human eye as the inspection method and simulates manual operation by means of a robotic arm. In this paper, a high-performance algorithm for the automated optical inspection of wire color sequence is proposed. This paper focuses on the design of a high-speed wire color sequence detection that can automatically adapt to different kinds of wires and recognition situations, such as a single wire with only one color, and one or two wires covered with aluminum foil. To be further able to successfully inspect even if the wire is short in the screen and the two wires are close to each other, we calculate the horizontal gradient of the wires by edge detection and morphological calculation and identify the types and color sequences of the wires in the screen by a series of discriminative mechanisms. Food and fluid intake monitoring are essential for reducing the risk of dehydration, malnutrition, and obesity. The existing research has been preponderantly focused on dietary monitoring, while fluid intake monitoring, on the other hand, is often neglected. Food and fluid intake monitoring can be based on wearable sensors, environmental sensors, smart containers, and the collaborative use of multiple sensors. Vision-based intake monitoring methods have been widely exploited with the development of visual devices and computer vision algorithms. Vision-based methods provide non-intrusive solutions for monitoring. They have shown promising performance in food/beverage recognition and segmentation, human intake action detection and classification, and food volume/fluid amount estimation. However, occlusion, privacy, computational efficiency, and practicality pose significant challenges. Gait recognition, also known as walking pattern recognition, has expressed deep interest in the computer vision and biometrics community due to its potential to identify individuals from a distance. It has attracted increasing attention due to its potential applications and non-invasive nature. However, recognizing gait accurately is challenging due to the covariate factors, complexity and variability of environments, and human body representations. For that, it initially examines the various gait datasets used in the literature review and analyzes the performance of state-of-the-art techniques. After that, a taxonomy of deep learning methods is presented to characterize and organize the research landscape in this field. Furthermore, the taxonomy highlights the basic limitations of deep learning methods in the context of gait recognition. In the process of producing winding coils for power transformers, it is necessary to detect the tilt angle of the winding, which is one of the important parameters that affects the physical performance indicators of the transformer. The current detection method is manual measurement using a contact angle ruler, which is not only time-consuming but also has large errors. To solve this problem, this paper adopts a contactless measurement method based on machine vision technology. Firstly, this method uses a camera to take pictures of the winding image and performs a 0° correction and preprocessing on the image, using the OTSU method for binarization. An image self-segmentation and splicing method is proposed to obtain a single-wire image and perform skeleton extraction. Secondly, this paper compares three angle detection methods: the improved interval rotation projection method, quadratic iterative least squares method, and Hough transform method and through experimental analysis, compares their accuracy and operating speed. The experimental results show that the Hough transform method has the fastest operating speed and can complete detection in an average of only 0.1 s, while the interval rotation projection method has the highest accuracy, with a maximum error of less than 0.15°. Small intestinal stromal tumor (SIST) is a common gastrointestinal tumor. Currently, SIST diagnosis relies on clinical radiologists reviewing CT images from medical imaging sensors. However, this method is inefficient and greatly affected by subjective factors. The automatic detection method for stromal tumors based on computer vision technology can better solve these problems. However, in CT images, SIST have different shapes and sizes, blurred edge texture, and little difference from surrounding normal tissues, which to a large extent challenges the use of computer vision technology for the automatic detection of stromal tumors. Furthermore, there are the following issues in the research on the detection and recognition of SIST. After analyzing mainstream target detection models on SIST data, it was discovered that there is an imbalance in the features at different levels during the feature fusion stage of the network model. Therefore, this paper proposes an algorithm, based on the attention balance feature pyramid (ABFP), for detecting SIST with unbalanced feature fusion in the target detection model. By combining weighted multi-level feature maps from the backbone network, the algorithm creates a balanced semantic feature map. Spatial attention and channel attention modules are then introduced to enhance this map. In the feature fusion stage, the algorithm scales the enhanced balanced semantic feature map to the size of each level feature map and enhances the original feature information with the original feature map, effectively addressing the imbalance between deep and shallow features. Consequently, the SIST detection model's detection performance is significantly improved, and the method is highly versatile. Image anomaly detection is a trending research topic in computer vision. The objective is to build models using available normal samples to detect various abnormal images without depending on real abnormal samples. It has high research significance and value for applications in the detection of defects in product appearance, medical image analysis, hyperspectral image processing, and other fields. This paper proposes an image anomaly detection algorithm based on feature distillation and an autoencoder structure, which uses the feature distillation structure of a dual-teacher network to train the encoder, thus suppressing the reconstruction of abnormal regions. This system also introduces an attention mechanism to highlight the detection objects, achieving effective detection of different defects in product appearance. In addition, this paper proposes a method for anomaly evaluation based on patch similarity that calculates the difference between the reconstructed image and the input image according to different regions of the image, thus improving the sensitivity and accuracy of the anomaly score. This paper conducts experiments on several datasets, and the results show that the proposed algorithm has superior performance in image anomaly detection. Body condition scoring is an objective scoring method used to evaluate the health of a cow by determining the amount of subcutaneous fat in a cow. Automated body condition scoring is becoming vital to large commercial dairy farms as it helps farmers score their cows more often and more consistently compared to manual scoring. A common approach to automated body condition scoring is to utilise a CNN-based model trained with data from a depth camera. The approaches presented in this paper make use of three depth cameras placed at different positions near the rear of a cow to train three independent CNNs. Ensemble modelling is used to combine the estimations of the three individual CNN models. The paper aims to test the performance impact of using ensemble modelling with the data from three separate depth cameras. The paper also looks at which of these three cameras and combinations thereof provide a good balance between computational cost and performance. The results of this study show that utilising the data from three depth cameras to train three separate models merged through ensemble modelling yields significantly improved automated body condition scoring accuracy compared to a single-depth camera and CNN model approach. Machine learning is an expanding field with an ever-increasing role in everyday life, with its utility in the industrial, agricultural, and medical sectors being undeniable. Recently, this utility has come in the form of machine learning implementation on embedded system devices. While there have been steady advances in the performance, memory, and power consumption of embedded devices, most machine learning algorithms still have a very high power consumption and computational demand, making the implementation of embedded machine learning somewhat difficult. However, different devices can be implemented for different applications based on their overall processing power and performance. This paper presents an overview of several different implementations of machine learning on embedded systems divided by their specific device, application, specific machine learning algorithm, and sensors. We will mainly focus on NVIDIA Jetson and Raspberry Pi devices with a few different less utilized embedded computers, as well as which of these devices were more commonly used for specific applications in different fields. We will also briefly analyze the specific ML models most commonly implemented on the devices and the specific sensors that were used to gather input from the field. All of the papers included in this review were selected using Google Scholar and published papers in the IEEExplore database. The selection criterion for these papers was the usage of embedded computing systems in either a theoretical study or practical implementation of machine learning models. The papers needed to have provided either one or, preferably, all of the following results in their studies—the overall accuracy of the models on the system, the overall power consumption of the embedded machine learning system, and the inference time of their models on the embedded system. Traditional human-computer interaction technology relies heavily on input devices such as mice and keyboards, which limit the speed and naturalness of interaction and can no longer meet the more advanced interaction needs of users. With the development of computer vision (CV) technology, research on contactless gesture recognition has become a new research hotspot. However, current CV-based gesture recognition technology has the limitation of a limited number of gesture recognition and cannot achieve fast and accurate text input operations. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an over-the-air handwritten character recognition system based on the coordinate correction YOLOv5 algorithm and a lightweight convolutional neural network (LGR-CNN), referred to as Air-GR. Unlike the direct recognition of captured gesture pictures, the system uses the trajectory points of gesture actions to generate images for gesture recognition. Firstly, by combining YOLOv5 with the gesture coordinate correction algorithm proposed in this paper, the system can effectively improve gesture detection accuracy. Secondly, considering that the captured gesture coordinates may contain multiple gestures, this paper proposes a time-window-based algorithm for segmenting the gesture coordinates. Finally, the system recognizes user gestures by plotting the segmented gesture coordinates in a two-dimensional coordinate system and feeding them into the constructed lightweight convolutional neural network, LGR-CNN. For the gesture trajectory image classification task, the accuracy of LGR-CNN is 13.2%, 12.2%, and 4.5% higher than that of the mainstream networks VGG16, ResNet, and GoogLeNet, respectively. The automatic detection of smoke by analyzing the video stream acquired by traditional surveillance cameras is becoming a more and more interesting problem for the scientific community thanks to the necessity to prevent fires at the very early stages. The adoption of a smart visual sensor, namely a computer vision algorithm running in real time, allows one to overcome the limitations of standard physical sensors. Nevertheless, this is a very challenging problem, due to the strong similarity of the smoke with other environmental elements like clouds, fog and dust. In addition to this challenge, data available for training deep neural networks is limited and not fully representative of real environments. Within this context, in this paper we propose a new method for smoke detection based on the combination of motion and appearance analysis with a modern convolutional neural network (CNN). Moreover, we propose a new dataset, called the MIVIA Smoke Detection Dataset (MIVIA-SDD), publicly available for research purposes; it consists of 129 videos covering about 28 h of recordings. The proposed hybrid method, trained and evaluated on the proposed dataset, demonstrated to be very effective by achieving a 94% smoke recognition rate and, at the same time, a substantially lower false positive rate if compared with fully deep learning-based approaches (14% vs. 100%). Therefore, the proposed combination of motion and appearance analysis with deep learning CNNs can be further investigated to improve the precision of fire detection approaches. Currently, the intelligent defect detection of massive grid transmission line inspection pictures using AI image recognition technology is an efficient and popular method. Usually, there are two technical routes for the construction of defect detection algorithm models: one is to use a lightweight network, which improves the efficiency, but it can generally only target a few types of defects and may reduce the detection accuracy; the other is to use a complex network model, which improves the accuracy, and can identify multiple types of defects at the same time, but it has a large computational volume and low efficiency. To maintain the model's high detection accuracy as well as its lightweight structure, this paper proposes a lightweight and efficient multi type defect detection method for transmission lines based on DCP-YOLOv8. The method employs deformable convolution (C2f_DCNv3) to enhance the defect feature extraction capability, and designs a re-parameterized cross phase feature fusion structure (RCSP) to optimize and fuse high-level semantic features with low level spatial features, thus improving the capability of the model to recognize defects at different scales while significantly reducing the model parameters; additionally, it combines the dynamic detection head and deformable convolutional v3's detection head (DCNv3-Dyhead) to enhance the feature expression capability and the utilization of contextual information to further improve the detection accuracy. Experimental results show that on a dataset containing 20 real transmission line defects, the method increases the average accuracy (mAP@0.5) to 72.2%, an increase of 4.3%, compared with the lightest baseline YOLOv8n model; the number of model parameters is only 2.8 M, a reduction of 9.15%, and the number of processed frames per second (FPS) reaches 103, which meets the real time detection demand. The correct workability of concrete is an essential parameter for its placement and compaction. However, an absence of automatic and transparent measurement methods to estimate the workability of concrete hinders the adaptation from laborious traditional methods such as the slump test. In this paper, we developed a machine-learning framework for estimating the slump class of concrete in the mixer using a stereovision camera. Depth data from five different slump classes was transformed into Haralick texture features to train several machine-learning classifiers. The best-performing classifier achieved a multiclass classification accuracy of 0.8179 with the XGBoost algorithm. Furthermore, we found through statistical analysis that while the denoising of depth data has little effect on the accuracy, the feature extraction of mixer blades and the choice of region of interest significantly increase the accuracy and the efficiency of the classifiers. Three-dimensional human pose estimation focuses on generating 3D pose sequences from 2D videos. It has enormous potential in the fields of human–robot interaction, remote sensing, virtual reality, and computer vision. Existing excellent methods primarily focus on exploring spatial or temporal encoding to achieve 3D pose inference. However, various architectures exploit the independent effects of spatial and temporal cues on 3D pose estimation, while neglecting the spatial–temporal synergistic influence. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel 3D pose estimation method with a dual-adaptive spatial–temporal former (DASTFormer) and additional supervised training. The DASTFormer contains attention-adaptive (AtA) and pure-adaptive (PuA) modes, which will enhance pose inference from 2D to 3D by adaptively learning spatial–temporal effects, considering both their cooperative and independent influences. In addition, an additional supervised training with batch variance loss is proposed in this work. Different from common training strategy, a two-round parameter update is conducted on the same batch data. Not only can it better explore the potential relationship between spatial–temporal encoding and 3D poses, but it can also alleviate the batch size limitations imposed by graphics cards on transformer-based frameworks. With the proliferation of image data in Internet of Things (IoT) systems, CS is expected to reduce the transmission cost of signals captured by various sensor devices. However, the quality of CS-reconstructed signals inevitably degrades as the sampling rate decreases, which poses a challenge in terms of the inference accuracy in downstream computer vision (CV) tasks. This limitation imposes an obstacle to the real-world application of existing CS techniques, especially for reducing transmission costs in sensor-rich environments. In response to this challenge, this paper contributes a CV-oriented adaptive CS framework based on saliency detection to the field of sensing technology that enables sensor systems to intelligently prioritize and transmit the most relevant data. Unlike existing CS techniques, the proposal prioritizes the accuracy of reconstructed images for CV purposes, not only for visual quality. The primary objective of this proposal is to enhance the preservation of information critical for CV tasks while optimizing the utilization of sensor data. This work conducts experiments on various realistic scenario datasets collected by real sensor devices. Experimental results demonstrate superior performance compared to existing CS sampling techniques across the STL10, Intel, and Imagenette datasets for classification and KITTI for object detection. Compared with the baseline uniform sampling technique, the average classification accuracy shows a maximum improvement of 26.23%, 11.69%, and 18.25%, respectively, at specific sampling rates. In addition, even at very low sampling rates, the proposal is demonstrated to be robust in terms of classification and detection as compared to state-of-the-art CS techniques. Human–object interaction (HOI) detection identifies a "set of interactions" in an image involving the recognition of interacting instances and the classification of interaction categories. The complexity and variety of image content make this task challenging. Recently, the Transformer has been applied in computer vision and received attention in the HOI detection task. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel Part Refinement Tandem Transformer (PRTT) for HOI detection. Unlike the previous Transformer-based HOI method, PRTT utilizes multiple decoders to split and process rich elements of HOI prediction and introduces a new part state feature extraction (PSFE) module to help improve the final interaction category classification. We adopt a novel prior feature integrated cross-attention (PFIC) to utilize the fine-grained partial state semantic and appearance feature output obtained by the PSFE module to guide queries. We validate our method on two public datasets, V-COCO and HICO-DET. Compared to state-of-the-art models, the performance of detecting human–object interaction is significantly improved by the PRTT. Point cloud registration is a fundamental task in computer vision and graphics, which is widely used in 3D reconstruction, object tracking, and atlas reconstruction. Learning-based optimization and deep learning methods have been widely developed in pairwise registration due to their own distinctive advantages. Deep learning methods offer greater flexibility and enable registering unseen point clouds that are not trained. Learning-based optimization methods exhibit enhanced robustness and stability when handling registration under various perturbations, such as noise, outliers, and occlusions. To leverage the strengths of both approaches to achieve a less time-consuming, robust, and stable registration for multiple instances, we propose a novel computational framework called SGRTmreg for multiple pairwise registrations in this paper. The SGRTmreg framework utilizes three components—a Searching scheme, a learning-based optimization method called Graph-based Reweighted discriminative optimization (GRDO), and a Transfer module to achieve multi-instance point cloud registration.Given a collection of instances to be matched, a template as a target point cloud, and an instance as a source point cloud, the searching scheme selects one point cloud from the collection that closely resembles the source. GRDO then learns a sequence of regressors by aligning the source to the target, while the transfer module stores and applies the learned regressors to align the selected point cloud to the target and estimate the transformation of the selected point cloud. In short, SGRTmreg harnesses a shared sequence of regressors to register multiple point clouds to a target point cloud. We conduct extensive registration experiments on various datasets to evaluate the proposed framework. The experimental results demonstrate that SGRTmreg achieves multiple pairwise registrations with higher accuracy, robustness, and stability than the state-of-the-art deep learning and traditional registration methods. In recent years, the technological landscape has undergone a profound metamorphosis catalyzed by the widespread integration of drones across diverse sectors. Essential to the drone manufacturing process is comprehensive testing, typically conducted in controlled laboratory settings to uphold safety and privacy standards. However, a formidable challenge emerges due to the inherent limitations of GPS signals within indoor environments, posing a threat to the accuracy of drone positioning. This limitation not only jeopardizes testing validity but also introduces instability and inaccuracies, compromising the assessment of drone performance. Given the pivotal role of precise GPS-derived data in drone autopilots, addressing this indoor-based GPS constraint is imperative to ensure the reliability and resilience of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This paper delves into the implementation of an Indoor Positioning System (IPS) leveraging computer vision. The proposed system endeavors to detect and localize UAVs within indoor environments through an enhanced vision-based triangulation approach. A comparative analysis with alternative positioning methodologies is undertaken to ascertain the efficacy of the proposed system. The industrial manufacturing model is undergoing a transformation from a product-centric model to a customer-centric one. Driven by customized requirements, the complexity of products and the requirements for quality have increased, which pose a challenge to the applicability of traditional machine vision technology. Extensive research demonstrates the effectiveness of AI-based learning and image processing on specific objects or tasks, but few publications focus on the composite task of the integrated product, the traceability and improvability of methods, as well as the extraction and communication of knowledge between different scenarios or tasks. To address this problem, this paper proposes a common, knowledge-driven, generic vision inspection framework, targeted for standardizing product inspection into a process of information decoupling and adaptive metrics. Task-related object perception is planned into a multi-granularity and multi-pattern progressive alignment based on industry knowledge and structured tasks. Inspection is abstracted as a reconfigurable process of multi-sub-pattern space combination mapping and difference metric under appropriate high-level strategies and experiences. Finally, strategies for knowledge improvement and accumulation based on historical data are presented. The experiment demonstrates the process of generating a detection pipeline for complex products and continuously improving it through failure tracing and knowledge improvement. Compared to the ( 1.767 ° , 69.802 mm) and 0.883 obtained by state-of-the-art deep learning methods, the generated pipeline achieves a pose estimation ranging from ( 2.771 ° , 153.584 mm) to ( 1.034 ° , 52.308 mm) and a detection rate ranging from 0.462 to 0.927. Through verification of other imaging methods and industrial tasks, we prove that the key to adaptability lies in the mining of inherent commonalities of knowledge, multi-dimensional accumulation, and reapplication.
