In this paper, for the sake of enhancing the security of wireless transmission, we proposed a novel system based on spatial and direction modulation (SDM) combined with generalized spatial modulation (GSM) which is aided by covert information mapping (CIM), termed as the CIM-GSDM system. In such a system, the legitimated user is equipped with distributed receivers so as to demodulate the conveyed signal by exploiting its indices while disturbing eavesdroppers for information security. More specifically, part of the information is modulated into the indices of the legitimated distributed receiver subsets with the aid of the mapped covert information and the interference matrix, while another part of the message is arranged by conventional amplitude-phase modulation. The proposed system can reap the benefits from both GSM and CIM to make eavesdropper suffer great mixture. Furthermore, the detection scheme and theoretical analysis of error performance are discussed as well. The simulation results exhibit that the bit error rate (BER) performance of legitimate user is much better than that of the eavesdropper while the proposed scheme improves the security compared to the original CIM-SDM system at the same spectral efficiency. In order to overcome the limitations of traditional stochastic models for smartphones, we introduce a double-difference code pseudorange residual (DDPR)-dependent stochastic model based on an optimal satellite subset, with the goal of mitigating the constraints imposed by the quality of GNSS observations in smartphones on the accuracy and reliability of phone-based GNSS positioning. In our methodology, the satellite selection process involved considering the integrated carrier-to-noise density ratio (C/N0) index of both the reference station and the smartphone, enabling us to construct a satellite subset characterized by superior observation quality. Furthermore, by leveraging the optimal subset of satellites and incorporating the C/N0-dependent stochastic model, we could determine the approximate location of the terminal through pseudorange differential positioning. Subsequently, we estimated the DDPRs for all satellites and utilized these values as prior information to build a stochastic model of the observations. Our findings indicate that in occluded environments, the DDPR-dependent stochastic model significantly enhances positioning accuracy for both the Huawei Mate40 and P40 terminals compared to the C/N0-dependent model. Numerically, the improvements in the north (N), east (E), and up (U) directions were approximately 30%, 32%, and 34% for the Mate40, and 26%, 33%, and 24% for the P40 terminal. This suggests that the proposed DDPR-dependent stochastic model effectively identifies and mitigates large gross error signals caused by multipath and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) signals, thereby assigning lower weights to these problematic observations and ultimately enhancing positioning accuracy. Moreover, the weighting method involves minimal computations and is straightforward to implement, making it particularly suitable for GNSS positioning applications on smartphones in complex urban environments. Despite advancements in sensor technology, monitoring nutrients in situ and in real-time is still challenging and expensive. Soft sensors, based on data-driven models, offer an alternative to direct nutrient measurements. However, the high demand for data required for their development poses logistical issues with data handling. To address this, the study aimed to determine the optimal subset of predictors and the sampling frequency for developing nutrient soft sensors using random forest. The study used water quality data at 15-min intervals from 2 automatic stations on the Main River, Germany, and included dissolved oxygen, temperature, conductivity, pH, streamflow, and cyclical time features as predictors. The optimal subset of predictors was identified using forward subset selection, and the models fitted with the optimal predictors produced R2 values above 0.95 for nitrate, orthophosphate, and ammonium for both stations. The study then trained the models on 40 sampling frequencies, ranging from monthly to 15-min intervals. The results showed that as the sampling frequency increased, the model's performance, measured by RMSE, improved. The optimal balance between sampling frequency and model performance was identified using a knee-point determination algorithm. The optimal sampling frequency for nitrate was 3.6 and 2.8 h for the 2 stations, respectively. For orthophosphate, it was 2.4 and 1.8 h. For ammonium, it was 2.2 h for 1 station. The study highlights the utility of surrogate models for monitoring nutrient levels and demonstrates that nutrient soft sensors can function with fewer predictors at lower frequencies without significantly decreasing performance. Nowadays, various time-series Earth Observation data with multiple bands are freely available, such as Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) datasets including 8-day composites from NASA, and 10-day composites from the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS). It is challenging to efficiently use these time-series MODIS datasets for long-term environmental monitoring due to their vast volume and information redundancy. This challenge will be greater when Sentinel 2-3 data become available. Another challenge that researchers face is the lack of in-situ data for supervised modelling, especially for time-series data analysis. In this study, we attempt to tackle the two important issues with a case study of land cover mapping using CCRS 10-day MODIS composites with the help of Random Forests' features: variable importance, outlier identification. The variable importance feature is used to analyze and select optimal subsets of time-series MODIS imagery for efficient land cover mapping, and the outlier identification feature is utilized for transferring sample data available from one year to an adjacent year for supervised classification modelling. The results of the case study of agricultural land cover classification at a regional scale show that using only about a half of the variables we can achieve land cover classification accuracy close to that generated using the full dataset. Wireless Body Sensor Networks (WBSNs) constitute a subset of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) responsible for monitoring vital sign-related data of patients and accordingly route this data towards a sink. In routing sensed data towards sinks, WBSNs face some of the same routing challenges as general WSNs, but the unique requirements of WBSNs impose some more constraints that need to be addressed by the routing mechanisms. This paper identifies various issues and challenges in pursuit of effective routing in WBSNs. Electrohysterography (EHG) has emerged as an alternative technique to predict preterm labor, which still remains a challenge for the scientific-technical community. Based on EHG parameters, complex classification algorithms involving non-linear transformation of the input features, which clinicians found difficult to interpret, were generally used to predict preterm labor. We proposed to use genetic algorithm to identify the optimum feature subset to predict preterm labor using simple classification algorithms. A total of 203 parameters from 326 multichannel EHG recordings and obstetric data were used as input features. We designed and validated 3 base classifiers based on k-nearest neighbors, linear discriminant analysis and logistic regression, achieving F1-score of 84.63 ± 2.76%, 89.34 ± 3.5% and 86.87 ± 4.53%, respectively, for incoming new data. The results reveal that temporal, spectral and non-linear EHG parameters computed in different bandwidths from multichannel recordings provide complementary information on preterm labor prediction. We also developed an ensemble classifier that not only outperformed base classifiers but also reduced their variability, achieving an F1-score of 92.04 ± 2.97%, which is comparable with those obtained using complex classifiers. Our results suggest the feasibility of developing a preterm labor prediction system with high generalization capacity using simple easy-to-interpret classification algorithms to assist in transferring the EHG technique to clinical practice. We consider the problem of the efficient transmit antenna subset (TAS) selection for maximizing the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of multiuser space–time line code (MU–STLC) systems. The exhaustive search for optimal TAS selection is impractical since the total number of transmit antennas increases. We propose two efficient TAS selection schemes based on the Woodbury formula. The first is to incrementally select N S active transmit antennas among the available N T transmit antennas. To reduce the complexity of the incremental selection scheme, the Woodbury formula is employed in the optimization process. The second is to perform the decremental strategy in which the Woodbury formula is also applied to develop the low-complexity TAS selection procedure for the MU–STLC systems. Simulation results show that the proposed incremental and decremental TAS selection algorithms offer better alternatives than the existing greedy TAS selection algorithm for the MU–STLC systems. Furthermore, in terms of bit error rate, the proposed minimum mean square error decremental TAS selection algorithm turns out to outperform the existing greedy algorithm with significantly lower computational complexity. Malicious software ("malware") has become one of the serious cybersecurity issues in Android ecosystem. Given the fast evolution of Android malware releases, it is practically not feasible to manually detect malware apps in the Android ecosystem. As a result, machine learning has become a fledgling approach for malware detection. Since machine learning performance is largely influenced by the availability of high quality and relevant features, feature selection approaches play key role in machine learning based detection of malware. In this paper, we formulate the feature selection problem as a quadratic programming problem and analyse how commonly used filter-based feature selection methods work with emphases on Android malware detection. We compare and contrast several feature selection methods along several factors including the composition of relevant features selected. We empirically evaluate the predictive accuracy of the feature subset selection algorithms and compare their predictive accuracy and the execution time using several learning algorithms. The results of the experiments confirm that feature selection is necessary for improving accuracy of the learning models as well decreasing the run time. The results also show that the performance of the feature selection algorithms vary from one learning algorithm to another and no one feature selection approach performs better than the other approaches all the time. Smart manufacturing, which integrates a multi-sensing system with physical manufacturing processes, has been widely adopted in the industry to support online and real-time decision making to improve manufacturing quality. A multi-sensing system for each specific manufacturing process can efficiently collect the in situ process variables from different sensor modalities to reflect the process variations in real-time. However, in practice, we usually do not have enough budget to equip too many sensors in each manufacturing process due to the cost consideration. Moreover, it is also important to better interpret the relationship between the sensing modalities and the quality variables based on the model. Therefore, it is necessary to model the quality-process relationship by selecting the most relevant sensor modalities with the specific quality measurement from the multi-modal sensing system in smart manufacturing. In this research, we adopted the concept of best subset variable selection and proposed a new model called Multi-mOdal beSt Subset modeling (MOSS). The proposed MOSS can effectively select the important sensor modalities and improve the modeling accuracy in quality-process modeling via functional norms that characterize the overall effects of individual modalities. The significance of sensor modalities can be used to determine the sensor placement strategy in smart manufacturing. Moreover, the selected modalities can better interpret the quality-process model by identifying the most correlated root cause of quality variations. The residual-based (RB) receiver autonomous integrity monitoring (RAIM) detector is a widely used receiver integrity enhancement technology that has the ability to rapidly respond to outliers. However, the sensitivity and vulnerability of the residuals to the outliers are the weaknesses of the method especially in the case of multi-outlier modes. It is an effective method for enhancing the validity of residuals by robust estimation instead of least squares (LS) estimation. In this paper, a modified RB RAIM detector based on a robust MM estimation with a higher detection performance under multi-outlier modes is presented. A fast subset selection method based on the characteristic slope that could reduce the number of subsets to be calculated is also presented. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm maintains a more robust performance than the RB RAIM detector based on the LS estimator and M estimator with an IGG III function especially with the increase in the number of outliers. In this paper, we explore learning methods to improve the performance of the open-circuit fault diagnosis of modular multilevel converters (MMCs). Two deep learning methods, namely, convolutional neural networks (CNN) and auto encoder based deep neural networks (AE-based DNN), as well as stand-alone SoftMax classifier are explored for the detection and classification of faults of MMC-based high voltage direct current converter (MMC-HVDC). Only AC-side three-phase current and the upper and lower bridges' currents of the MMCs are used directly in our proposed approaches without any explicit feature extraction or feature subset selection. The two-terminal MMC-HVDC system is implemented in Power Systems Computer-Aided Design/Electromagnetic Transients including DC (PSCAD/EMTDC) to verify and compare our methods. The simulation results indicate CNN, AE-based DNN, and SoftMax classifier can detect and classify faults with high detection accuracy and classification accuracy. Compared with CNN and AE-based DNN, the SoftMax classifier performed better in detection and classification accuracy as well as testing speed. This paper considers the binary Gaussian distribution robust hypothesis testing under a Bayesian optimal criterion in the wireless sensor network (WSN). The distribution covariance matrix under each hypothesis is known, while the distribution mean vector under each hypothesis drifts in an ellipsoidal uncertainty set. Because of the limited bandwidth and energy, we aim at seeking a subset of p out of m sensors such that the best detection performance is achieved. In this setup, the minimax robust sensor selection problem is proposed to deal with the uncertainties of distribution means. Following a popular method, minimizing the maximum overall error probability with respect to the selection matrix can be approximated by maximizing the minimum Chernoff distance between the distributions of the selected measurements under null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis to be detected. Then, we utilize Danskin's theorem to compute the gradient of the objective function of the converted maximization problem, and apply the orthogonal constraint-preserving gradient algorithm (OCPGA) to solve the relaxed maximization problem without 0/1 constraints. It is shown that the OCPGA can obtain a stationary point of the relaxed problem. Meanwhile, we provide the computational complexity of the OCPGA, which is much lower than that of the existing greedy algorithm. Finally, numerical simulations illustrate that, after the same projection and refinement phases, the OCPGA-based method can obtain better solutions than the greedy algorithm-based method but with up to 48.72 % shorter runtimes. Near-infrared (NIR) spectral sensors deliver the spectral response of the light absorbed by materials for quantification, qualification or identification. Spectral analysis technology based on the NIR sensor has been a useful tool for complex information processing and high precision identification in the tobacco industry. In this paper, a novel method based on the support vector machine (SVM) is proposed to discriminate the tobacco cultivation region using the near-infrared (NIR) sensors, where the genetic algorithm (GA) is employed for input subset selection to identify the effective principal components (PCs) for the SVM model. With the same number of PCs as the inputs to the SVM model, a number of comparative experiments were conducted between the effective PCs selected by GA and the PCs orderly starting from the first one. The model performance was evaluated in terms of prediction accuracy and four parameters of assessment criteria (true positive rate, true negative rate, positive predictive value and F1 score). From the results, it is interesting to find that some PCs with less information may contribute more to the cultivation regions and are considered as more effective PCs, and the SVM model with the effective PCs selected by GA has a superior discrimination capacity. A cost-effective approach to gather information in a smart city is to embed sensors in vehicles such as buses. To understand the limitations and opportunities of this model, it is fundamental to investigate the spatial coverage of such a network, especially in the case where only a subset of the buses have a sensing device embedded. In this paper, we propose a model to select the right subset of buses that maximizes the coverage of the city. We evaluate the model in a real scenario based on a large-scale dataset of more than 5700 buses in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Among other findings, we observe that the fleet of buses covers approximately 5655 km of streets (approximately 47% of the streets) and show that it is possible to cover 94% of the same streets if only 18% of buses have sensing capabilities embedded.
