The frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) optical fingerprint scanning method is widely used due to its cost-effectiveness. However, fingerprint image quality is highly dependent on fingertip surface conditions, with moisture generally considered a degrading factor. Interestingly, a prior study reported that excessive moisture may improve image quality, though their findings were based on qualitative observations, necessitating further quantitative analysis. Additionally, since the FTIR method relies on optical principles, image quality is also influenced by the wavelength of the light source. In this study, we conducted a preliminary clinical experiment to quantitatively analyze the impact of moisture levels on fingertips (wet, dry, and control) and light wavelengths (red, green, and blue) on FTIR fingerprint image quality. A total of 20 male and female participants with no physical impairments were involved. The results suggest that FTIR fingerprint image quality may improve under wet conditions and when illuminated with green and blue light sources compared to dry conditions and red light. Statistical evidence supports this consistent trend. However, given the limited sample size, the statistical validity and generalizability of these findings should be interpreted with caution. These insights provide a basis for optimizing fingerprint imaging conditions, potentially enhancing the reliability and accuracy of automatic fingerprint identification systems (AFIS) by reducing variations in individual fingerprint quality. Iris is one of the most widely used biometric modalities because of its uniqueness, high matching performance, and inherently secure nature. Iris segmentation is an essential preliminary step for iris-based biometric authentication. The authentication accuracy is directly connected with the iris segmentation accuracy. In the last few years, deep-learning-based iris segmentation methodologies have increasingly been adopted because of their ability to handle challenging segmentation tasks and their advantages over traditional segmentation techniques. However, the biggest challenge to the biometric community is the scarcity of open-source resources for adoption for application and reproducibility. This review provides a comprehensive examination of available open-source iris segmentation resources, including datasets, algorithms, and tools. In the process, we designed three U-Net and U-Net++ architecture-influenced segmentation algorithms as standard benchmarks, trained them on a large composite dataset (>45K samples), and created 1K manually segmented ground truth masks. Overall, eleven state-of-the-art algorithms were benchmarked against five datasets encompassing multiple sensors, environmental conditions, demography, and illumination. This assessment highlights the strengths, limitations, and practical implications of each method and identifies gaps that future studies should address to improve segmentation accuracy and robustness. Internet of Things (IoT) technology is evolving over the peak of smart infrastructure with the participation of IoT devices in a wide range of applications. Traditional IoT authentication methods are vulnerable to threats due to wireless data transmission. However, IoT devices are resource- and energy-constrained, so building lightweight security that provides stronger authentication is essential. This paper proposes a novel, two-layered multi-factor authentication (2L-MFA) framework using blockchain to enhance IoT devices and user security. The first level of authentication is for IoT devices, one that considers secret keys, geographical location, and physically unclonable function (PUF). Proof-of-authentication (PoAh) and elliptic curve Diffie–Hellman are followed for lightweight and low latency support. Second-level authentication for IoT users, which are sub-categorized into four levels, each defined by specific factors such as identity, password, and biometrics. The first level involves a matrix-based password; the second level utilizes the elliptic curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA); and levels 3 and 4 are secured with iris and finger vein, providing comprehensive and robust authentication. We deployed fuzzy logic to validate the authentication and make the system more robust. The 2L-MFA model significantly improves performance, reducing registration, login, and authentication times by up to 25%, 50%, and 25%, respectively, facilitating quicker cloud access post-authentication and enhancing overall efficiency. Biometric fingerprint identification hinges on the reliability of its sensors; however, calibrating and standardizing these sensors poses significant challenges, particularly in regards to repeatability and data diversity. To tackle these issues, we propose methodologies for fabricating synthetic 3D fingerprint targets, or phantoms, that closely emulate real human fingerprints. These phantoms enable the precise evaluation and validation of fingerprint sensors under controlled and repeatable conditions. Our research employs laser engraving, 3D printing, and CNC machining techniques, utilizing different materials. We assess the phantoms' fidelity to synthetic fingerprint patterns, intra-class variability, and interoperability across different manufacturing methods. The findings demonstrate that a combination of laser engraving or CNC machining with silicone casting produces finger-like phantoms with high accuracy and consistency for rolled fingerprint recordings. For slap recordings, direct laser engraving of flat silicone targets excels, and in the contactless fingerprint sensor setting, 3D printing and silicone filling provide the most favorable attributes. Our work enables a comprehensive, method-independent comparison of various fabrication methodologies, offering a unique perspective on the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. (1) Background: The ability to recognize identities is an essential component of security. Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals have gained popularity for identity recognition because of their universal, unique, stable, and measurable characteristics. To ensure accurate identification of ECG signals, this paper proposes an approach which involves mixed feature sampling, sparse representation, and recognition. (2) Methods: This paper introduces a new method of identifying individuals through their ECG signals. This technique combines the extraction of fixed ECG features and specific frequency features to improve accuracy in ECG identity recognition. This approach uses the wavelet transform to extract frequency bands which contain personal information features from the ECG signals. These bands are reconstructed, and the single R-peak localization determines the ECG window. The signals are segmented and standardized based on the located windows. A sparse dictionary is created using the standardized ECG signals, and the KSVD (K-Orthogonal Matching Pursuit) algorithm is employed to project ECG target signals into a sparse vector–matrix representation. To extract the final representation of the target signals for identification, the sparse coefficient vectors in the signals are maximally pooled. For recognition, the co-dimensional bundle search method is used in this paper. (3) Results: This paper utilizes the publicly available European ST-T database for our study. Specifically, this paper selects ECG signals from 20, 50 and 70 subjects, each with 30 testing segments. The method proposed in this paper achieved recognition rates of 99.14%, 99.09%, and 99.05%, respectively. In the head-mounted display environment for experiencing metaverse or virtual reality, conventional input devices cannot be used, so a new type of nonintrusive and continuous biometric authentication technology is required. Since the wrist wearable device is equipped with a photoplethysmogram sensor, it is very suitable for use for nonintrusive and continuous biometric authentication purposes. In this study, we propose a one-dimensional Siamese network biometric identification model using a photoplethysmogram. To maintain the unique characteristics of each person and reduce noise in preprocessing, we adopted a multicycle averaging method without using a bandpass or low-pass filter. In addition, to verify the effectiveness of the multicycle averaging method, the number of cycles was changed and the results were compared. Genuine and impostor data were used to verify the biometric identification. We used the one-dimensional Siamese network to verify the similarity between the classes and found that the method with five overlapping cycles was the most effective. Tests were conducted on the overlapping data of five single-cycle signals and excellent identification results were observed, with an AUC score of 0.988 and an accuracy of 0.9723. Thus, the proposed biometric identification model is time-efficient and shows excellent security performance, even in devices with limited computational capabilities, such as wearable devices. Consequently, our proposed method has the following advantages compared with previous works. First, the effect of noise reduction and information preservation through multicycle averaging was experimentally verified by varying the number of photoplethysmogram cycles. Second, by analyzing authentication performance through genuine and impostor matching analysis based on a one-dimensional Siamese network, the accuracy that is not affected by the number of enrolled subjects was derived. Walking gait data acquired with force platforms may be used for person re-identification (re-ID) in various authentication, surveillance, and forensics applications. Current force platform-based re-ID systems classify a fixed set of identities (IDs), which presents a problem when IDs are added or removed from the database. We formulated force platform-based re-ID as a deep metric learning (DML) task, whereby a deep neural network learns a feature representation that can be compared between inputs using a distance metric. The force platform dataset used in this study is one of the largest and the most comprehensive of its kind, containing 193 IDs with significant variations in clothing, footwear, walking speed, and time between trials. Several DML model architectures were evaluated in a challenging setting where none of the IDs were seen during training (i.e., zero-shot re-ID) and there was only one prior sample per ID to compare with each query sample. The best architecture was 85% accurate in this setting, though an analysis of changes in walking speed and footwear between measurement instances revealed that accuracy was 28% higher on same-speed, same-footwear comparisons, compared to cross-speed, cross-footwear comparisons. In recent years, affective computing has emerged as a promising approach to studying user experience, replacing subjective methods that rely on participants' self-evaluation. Affective computing uses biometrics to recognize people's emotional states as they interact with a product. However, the cost of medical-grade biofeedback systems is prohibitive for researchers with limited budgets. An alternative solution is to use consumer-grade devices, which are more affordable. However, these devices require proprietary software to collect data, complicating data processing, synchronization, and integration. Additionally, researchers need multiple computers to control the biofeedback system, increasing equipment costs and complexity. To address these challenges, we developed a low-cost biofeedback platform using inexpensive hardware and open-source libraries. Our software can serve as a system development kit for future studies. We conducted a simple experiment with one participant to validate the platform's effectiveness, using one baseline and two tasks that elicited distinct responses. Our low-cost biofeedback platform provides a reference architecture for researchers with limited budgets who wish to incorporate biometrics into their studies. This platform can be used to develop affective computing models in various domains, including ergonomics, human factors engineering, user experience, human behavioral studies, and human–robot interaction. Although voice authentication is generally secure, voiceprint-based authentication methods have the drawback of being affected by environmental noise, long passphrases, and large registered samples. Therefore, we present a breakthrough idea for smartphone user authentication by analyzing articulation and integrating the physiology and behavior of the vocal tract, tongue position, and lip movement to expose the uniqueness of individuals while making utterances. The key idea is to leverage the smartphone speaker and microphone to simultaneously transmit and receive speech and ultrasonic signals, construct identity-related features, and determine whether a single utterance is a legitimate user or an attacker. Physiological authentication methods prevent other users from copying or reproducing passwords. Compared to other types of behavioral authentication, the system is more accurately able to recognize the user's identity and adapt accordingly to environmental variations. The proposed system requires a smaller number of samples because single utterances are utilized, resulting in a user-friendly system that resists mimicry attacks with an average accuracy of 99% and an equal error rate of 0.5% under the three different surroundings. The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is used in the medical ecosystem through medical IoT sensors, such as blood glucose, heart rate, temperature, and pulse sensors. To maintain a secure sensor network and a stable IoMT environment, it is important to protect the medical IoT sensors themselves and the patient medical data they collect from various security threats. Medical IoT sensors attached to the patient's body must be protected from security threats, such as being controlled by unauthorized persons or transmitting erroneous medical data. In IoMT authentication, it is necessary to be sensitive to the following attack techniques. (1) The offline password guessing attack easily predicts a healthcare administrator's password offline and allows for easy access to the healthcare worker's account. (2) Privileged-insider attacks executed through impersonation are an easy way for an attacker to gain access to a healthcare administrator's environment. Recently, previous research proposed a lightweight and anonymity preserving user authentication scheme for IoT-based healthcare. However, this scheme was vulnerable to offline password guessing, impersonation, and privileged insider attacks. These attacks expose not only the patients' medical data such as blood pressure, pulse, and body temperature but also the patients' registration number, phone number, and guardian. To overcome these weaknesses, in the present study we propose an improved lightweight user authentication scheme for the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). In our scheme, the hash function and XOR operation are used for operation in low-spec healthcare IoT sensor. The automatic cryptographic protocol tool ProVerif confirmed the security of the proposed scheme. Finally, we show that the proposed scheme is more secure than other protocols and that it has 266.48% better performance than schemes that have been previously described in other studies. Iris localization in non-cooperative environments is challenging and essential for accurate iris recognition. Motivated by the traditional iris-localization algorithm and the robustness of the YOLO model, we propose a novel iris-localization algorithm. First, we design a novel iris detector with a modified you only look once v4 (YOLO v4) model. We can approximate the position of the pupil center. Then, we use a modified integro-differential operator to precisely locate the iris inner and outer boundaries. Experiment results show that iris-detection accuracy can reach 99.83% with this modified YOLO v4 model, which is higher than that of a traditional YOLO v4 model. The accuracy in locating the inner and outer boundary of the iris without glasses can reach 97.72% at a short distance and 98.32% at a long distance. The locating accuracy with glasses can obtained at 93.91% and 84%, respectively. It is much higher than the traditional Daugman's algorithm. Face recognition is an important application of pattern recognition and image analysis in biometric security systems. The COVID-19 outbreak has introduced several issues that can negatively affect the reliability of the facial recognition systems currently available: on the one hand, wearing a face mask/covering has led to growth in failure cases, while on the other, the restrictions on direct contact between people can prevent any biometric data being acquired in controlled environments. To effectively address these issues, we designed a hybrid methodology that improves the reliability of facial recognition systems. A well-known Source Camera Identification (SCI) technique, based on Pixel Non-Uniformity (PNU), was applied to analyze the integrity of the input video stream as well as to detect any tampered/fake frames. To examine the behavior of this methodology in real-life use cases, we implemented a prototype that showed two novel properties compared to the current state-of-the-art of biometric systems: (a) high accuracy even when subjects are wearing a face mask; (b) whenever the input video is produced by deep fake techniques (replacing the face of the main subject) the system can recognize that it has been altered providing more than one alert message. This methodology proved not only to be simultaneously more robust to mask induced occlusions but also even more reliable in preventing forgery attacks on the input video stream. The electroencephalogram (EEG) introduced a massive potential for user identification. Several studies have shown that EEG provides unique features in addition to typical strength for spoofing attacks. EEG provides a graphic recording of the brain's electrical activity that electrodes can capture on the scalp at different places. However, selecting which electrodes should be used is a challenging task. Such a subject is formulated as an electrode selection task that is tackled by optimization methods. In this work, a new approach to select the most representative electrodes is introduced. The proposed algorithm is a hybrid version of the Flower Pollination Algorithm and β -Hill Climbing optimizer called FPA β -hc. The performance of the FPA β -hc algorithm is evaluated using a standard EEG motor imagery dataset. User authentication in wireless sensor networks is more difficult than in traditional networks owing to sensor network characteristics such as unreliable communication, limited resources, and unattended operation. For these reasons, various authentication schemes have been proposed to provide secure and efficient communication. In 2016, Park et al. proposed a secure biometric-based authentication scheme with smart card revocation/reissue for wireless sensor networks. However, we found that their scheme was still insecure against impersonation attack, and had a problem in the smart card revocation/reissue phase. In this paper, we show how an adversary can impersonate a legitimate user or sensor node, illegal smart card revocation/reissue and prove that Park et al.'s scheme fails to provide revocation/reissue. In addition, we propose an enhanced scheme that provides efficiency, as well as anonymity and security. Finally, we provide security and performance analysis between previous schemes and the proposed scheme, and provide formal analysis based on the random oracle model. The results prove that the proposed scheme can solve the weaknesses of impersonation attack and other security flaws in the security analysis section. Body area sensor networks (BANs) utilize wireless communicating sensor nodes attached to a human body for convenience, safety, and health applications. Physiological characteristics of the body, such as the heart rate or Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals, are promising means to simplify the setup process and to improve security of BANs. This paper describes the design and implementation steps required to realize an ECG-based authentication protocol to identify sensor nodes attached to the same human body. Therefore, the first part of the paper addresses the design of a body-area sensor system, including the hardware setup, analogue and digital signal processing, and required ECG feature detection techniques. A model-based design flow is applied, and strengths and limitations of each design step are discussed. Real-world measured data originating from the implemented sensor system are then used to set up and parametrize a novel physiological authentication protocol for BANs. The authentication protocol utilizes statistical properties of expected and detected deviations to limit the number of false positive and false negative authentication attempts. The result of the described holistic design effort is the first practical implementation of biometric authentication in BANs that reflects timing and data uncertainties in the physical and cyber parts of the system. It is known that cardiac and respiratory rhythms in electrocardiograms (ECGs) are highly nonlinear and non-stationary. As a result, most traditional time-domain algorithms are inadequate for characterizing the complex dynamics of the ECG. This paper proposes a new ECG sensor card and a statistical-based ECG algorithm, with the aid of a reduced binary pattern (RBP), with the aim of achieving faster ECG human identity recognition with high accuracy. The proposed algorithm has one advantage that previous ECG algorithms lack--the waveform complex information and de-noising preprocessing can be bypassed; therefore, it is more suitable for non-stationary ECG signals. Experimental results tested on two public ECG databases (MIT-BIH) from MIT University confirm that the proposed scheme is feasible with excellent accuracy, low complexity, and speedy processing. To be more specific, the advanced RBP algorithm achieves high accuracy in human identity recognition and is executed at least nine times faster than previous algorithms. Moreover, based on the test results from a long-term ECG database, the evolving RBP algorithm also demonstrates superior capability in handling long-term and non-stationary ECG signals. Body Sensor Network (BSN) is a network of several associated sensor nodes on, inside or around the human body to monitor vital signals, such as, Electroencephalogram (EEG), Photoplethysmography (PPG), Electrocardiogram (ECG), etc. Each sensor node in BSN delivers major information; therefore, it is very significant to provide data confidentiality and security. All existing approaches to secure BSN are based on complex cryptographic key generation procedures, which not only demands high resource utilization and computation time, but also consumes large amount of energy, power and memory during data transmission. However, it is indispensable to put forward energy efficient and computationally less complex authentication technique for BSN. In this paper, a novel biometric-based algorithm is proposed, which utilizes Heart Rate Variability (HRV) for simple key generation process to secure BSN. Our proposed algorithm is compared with three data authentication techniques, namely Physiological Signal based Key Agreement (PSKA), Data Encryption Standard (DES) and Rivest Shamir Adleman (RSA). Simulation is performed in Matlab and results suggest that proposed algorithm is quite efficient in terms of transmission time utilization, average remaining energy and total power consumption. Human Gait Recognition (HGR) is a biometric technique that has been utilized for security purposes for the last decade. The performance of gait recognition can be influenced by various factors such as wearing clothes, carrying a bag, and the walking surfaces. Furthermore, identification from differing views is a significant difficulty in HGR. Many techniques have been introduced in the literature for HGR using conventional and deep learning techniques. However, the traditional methods are not suitable for large datasets. Therefore, a new framework is proposed for human gait recognition using deep learning and best feature selection. The proposed framework includes data augmentation, feature extraction, feature selection, feature fusion, and classification. In the augmentation step, three flip operations were used. In the feature extraction step, two pre-trained models were employed, Inception-ResNet-V2 and NASNet Mobile. Both models were fine-tuned and trained using transfer learning on the CASIA B gait dataset. The features of the selected deep models were optimized using a modified three-step whale optimization algorithm and the best features were chosen. The selected best features were fused using the modified mean absolute deviation extended serial fusion (MDeSF) approach. Then, the final classification was performed using several classification algorithms. The experimental process was conducted on the entire CASIA B dataset and achieved an average accuracy of 89.0. Background: Biometric sensing is a security method for protecting information and property. State-of-the-art biometric traits are behavioral and physiological in nature. However, they are vulnerable to tampering and forgery. Methods: The proposed approach uses blood flow sounds in the carotid artery as a source of biometric information. A handheld sensing device and an associated desktop application were built. Between 80 and 160 carotid recordings of 11 s in length were acquired from seven individuals each. Wavelet-based signal analysis was performed to assess the potential for biometric applications. Results: The acquired signals per individual proved to be consistent within one carotid sound recording and between multiple recordings spaced by several weeks. The averaged continuous wavelet transform spectra for all cardiac cycles of one recording showed specific spectral characteristics in the time-frequency domain, allowing for the discrimination of individuals, which could potentially serve as an individual fingerprint of the carotid sound. This is also supported by the quantitative analysis consisting of a small convolutional neural network, which was able to differentiate between different users with over 95% accuracy. Conclusion: The proposed approach and processing pipeline appeared promising for the discrimination of individuals. The biometrical recognition could clinically be used to obtain and highlight differences from a previously established personalized audio profile and subsequently could provide information on the source of the deviation as well as on its effects on the individual's health. The limited number of individuals and recordings require a study in a larger population along with an investigation of the long-term spectral stability of carotid sounds to assess its potential as a biometric marker. The rapid spread of wearable technologies has motivated the collection of a variety of signals, such as pulse rate, electrocardiogram (ECG), electroencephalogram (EEG), and others. As those devices are used to do so many tasks and store a significant amount of personal data, the concern of how our data can be exposed starts to gain attention as the wearable devices can become an attack vector or a security breach. In this context, biometric also has expanded its use to meet new security requirements of authentication demanded by online applications, and it has been used in identification systems by a large number of people. Existing works on ECG for user authentication do not consider a population size close to a real application. Finding real data that has a big number of people ECG's data is a challenge. This work investigates a set of steps that can improve the results when working with a higher number of target classes in a biometric identification scenario. These steps, such as increasing the number of examples, removing outliers, and including a few additional features, are proven to increase the performance in a large data set. We propose a data improvement model for ECG biometric identification (user identification based on electrocardiogram—DETECT), which improves the performance of the biometric system considering a greater number of subjects, which is closer to a security system in the real world. The DETECT model increases precision from 78% to 92% within 1500 subjects, and from 90% to 95% within 100 subjects. Moreover, good False Rejection Rate (i.e., 0.064003) and False Acceptance Rate (i.e., 0.000033) were demonstrated. This paper conducts a comparative analysis of deep models in biometrics using scalogram of electrocardiogram (ECG). A scalogram is the absolute value of the continuous wavelet transform coefficients of a signal. Since biometrics using ECG signals are sensitive to noise, studies have been conducted by transforming signals into a frequency domain that is efficient for analyzing noisy signals. By transforming the signal from the time domain to the frequency domain using the wavelet, the 1-D signal becomes a 2-D matrix, and it could be analyzed at multiresolution. However, this process makes signal analysis morphologically complex. This means that existing simple classifiers could perform poorly. We investigate the possibility of using the scalogram of ECG as input to deep convolutional neural networks of deep learning, which exhibit optimal performance for the classification of morphological imagery. When training data is small or hardware is insufficient for training, transfer learning can be used with pretrained deep models to reduce learning time, and classify it well enough. In this paper, AlexNet, GoogLeNet, and ResNet are considered as deep models of convolutional neural network. The experiments are performed on two databases for performance evaluation. Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB)-ECG is a well-known database, while Chosun University (CU)-ECG is directly built for this study using the developed ECG sensor. The ResNet was 0.73%—0.27% higher than AlexNet or GoogLeNet on PTB-ECG—and the ResNet was 0.94%—0.12% higher than AlexNet or GoogLeNet on CU-ECG. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wireless sensor networks are widely used in many applications such as environmental monitoring, health care, smart grid and surveillance. Many security protocols have been proposed and intensively studied due to the inherent nature of wireless networks. In particular, Wu et al. proposed a promising authentication scheme which is sufficiently robust against various attacks. However, according to our analysis, Wu et al.'s scheme has two serious security weaknesses against malicious outsiders. First, their scheme can lead to user impersonation attacks. Second, user anonymity is not preserved in their scheme. In this paper, we present these vulnerabilities of Wu et al.'s scheme in detail. We also propose a new scheme to complement their weaknesses.
