Speech disorders are significant barriers to the balanced development of a child. Many children in Poland are affected by lisps (sigmatism)-the incorrect articulation of sibilants. Since speech therapy diagnostics is complex and multifaceted, developing computer-assisted methods is crucial. This paper presents the results of assessing the usefulness of hybrid feature vectors extracted based on multimodal (video and audio) data for the place of articulation assessment in sibilants /s/ and /ʂ/. We used acoustic features and, new in this field, visual parameters describing selected articulators' texture and shape. Analysis using statistical tests indicated the differences between various sibilant realizations in the context of the articulation pattern assessment using hybrid feature vectors. In sound /s/, 35 variables differentiated dental and interdental pronunciation, and 24 were visual (textural and shape). For sibilant /ʂ/, we found 49 statistically significant variables whose distributions differed between speaker groups (alveolar, dental, and postalveolar articulation), and the dominant feature type was noise-band acoustic. Our study suggests hybridizing the acoustic description with video processing provides richer diagnostic information.

In the paper, an innovative control system devoted to the stabilization of the parallel manipulator-type Hexapod is presented. The device consists of three main parts, allowing us to reach the desired location during various external disturbances. Indeed, the telescopic boom located on the car along with the system providing the correction of the boom column deflection as well as the gyroscopic self-leveling head constitute a complex tool covering a plethora of modern techniques and solutions. Through the application of advanced issues strictly derived from nonlinear identification and multivariable control theory branches, the dynamical behavior of the discussed device has been handled in order to achieve a proper reference operation. Naturally, it has been supported by a set of accompanying approaches related to the processes of the real-time measurement and robust data transmission. It should be emphasized that the proposed computer-aided system is intended for the film industry, where image stabilization plays a crucial role. Such a statement has additionally been confirmed by other innovative products introduced by a company placed in Opole, Poland, called MovieBird International.

The influence of the impregnation process of pine wood ( Pinus sylvestris L.) samples on the electrical resistance changes and the moisture-content measurement accuracy is presented in this paper. In this study, the resistances of impregnated and nonimpregnated green pine timber harvested from northern Poland were compared. An impregnation method based on a vacuum-pressure chamber was used. Copper salts were applied as the impregnated solutions. The obtained results of the electrical resistance comparison showed a dependence of wood resistance on the moisture content. Higher conductivity occurred in impregnated wood samples filled with copper salt compared with wood samples without impregnation. Noticeable differences in the electrical resistance values were observed when the wood moisture content was significantly above the Fibre Saturation Point (FSP).

Mineral excavation is a common process throughout the world. The open pits remaining after the closure of a mine require well-considered and meticulous reclamation activities aimed at restoring the environmental properties of a given area. The inspections carried out in Poland indicate numerous irregularities in implementing the reclamation process. The research in this study was conducted in six measurement series and includes both chemical and olfactometry determinations by devices: multisensor portable gas detector and field olfactometer. Statistical analysis of the results obtained show high concentrations in ambient air of both chemical compounds (NH 3 , VOCs, H 2 S, CH 3 SH) and odour, excluding the possibility of occurrence in the pit of only waste types contained in the administrative decision on reclamation. In addition to the unpleasant odour, the listed compounds can have dangerous effects on the health and life of living organisms. This paper presents a suitable method of control and detection of irregularities in the conducted processes. The main advantage is the relatively low cost of purchasing sensors and field olfactometers compared to other devices, and the possibility to test the polluted air in situ, without the risk of chemical processes occurring during transport of gas samples to the laboratory.

In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of the public data provided by low-cost sensors (LCS), which were used for spatial and temporal studies of air quality in Krakow. A PM (particulate matter) dataset was obtained in spring in 2021, during which a fairly strict lockdown was in force as a result of COVID-19. Therefore, we were able to separate the effect of solid fuel heating from other sources of background pollution, mainly caused by urban transport. Moreover, we analyzed the historical data of PM2.5 from 2010 to 2019 to show the effect of grassroots efforts and pro-clean-air legislation changes in Krakow. We designed a unique workflow with a time-spatial analysis of PM1, PM2.5, and PM10, and temperature data from Airly(c) sensors located in Krakow and its surroundings. Using geostatistical methods, we showed that Krakow's neighboring cities are the main sources of air pollution from solid fuel heating in the city. Additionally, we showed that the changes in the law in Krakow significantly reduced the PM concentration as compared to neighboring municipalities without a fossil fuel prohibition law. Moreover, our research demonstrates that informative campaigns and education are important initiating factors in order to bring about cleaner air in the future.

This paper presents a module for monitoring the contact force between a probe for measuring vibration perception on the wrist and the skin. The module was designed for an original measuring stand for the automatic testing of the vibrotactile discrimination thresholds using the psychophysical adaptive method of 1 up-2 down with two or three interval forced choices (2IFC, 3IFC). Measurement methods were implemented in LabVIEW software. The inspiration for the project was the need to check the possibility of building a vibrating interface for transmitting information through vibrations delivered to the wrist via a bracelet. The test procedure on the wrist is not standardized; however, during its development, the recommendations of the Polish Norm-International Organization for Standardization PN-ISO 13091-1, 2006 were adopted. This standard contains methods for measuring vibration sensation thresholds on the fingertips for the assessment of neural dysfunction. The key to the repeatability of measurements seems to be the ability to continuously control the pressure of the measuring probe on the skin. This article compares two solutions for measuring the contact force along with an analysis of their accuracy and the impact of vibrations on the measured values. Moreover, the results of measurements of vibrotactile amplitude and frequency discrimination thresholds obtained on the ventral wrist at five frequencies (25, 32, 63, 125 and 250 Hz) are presented.

The paper presents a method for recognizing sequences of static letters of the Polish finger alphabet using the point cloud descriptors: viewpoint feature histogram, eigenvalues-based descriptors, ensemble of shape functions, and global radius-based surface descriptor. Each sequence is understood as quick highly coarticulated motions, and the classification is performed by networks of hidden Markov models trained by transitions between postures corresponding to particular letters. Three kinds of the left-to-right Markov models of the transitions, two networks of the transition models-independent and dependent on a dictionary-as well as various combinations of point cloud descriptors are examined on a publicly available dataset of 4200 executions (registered as depth map sequences) prepared by the authors. The hand shape representation proposed in our method can also be applied for recognition of hand postures in single frames. We confirmed this using a known, challenging American finger alphabet dataset with about 60,000 depth images.

The paper is focused on the security issues of sensors provided with processors and software and used for high-risk applications. Common IT related threats may cause serious consequences for sensor system users. To improve their robustness, sensor systems should be developed in a restricted way that would provide them with assurance. One assurance creation methodology is Common Criteria (ISO/IEC 15408) used for IT products and systems. The paper begins with a primer on the Common Criteria, and then a general security model of the intelligent sensor as an IT product is discussed. The paper presents how the security problem of the intelligent sensor is defined and solved. The contribution of the paper is to provide Common Criteria (CC) related security design patterns and to improve the effectiveness of the sensor development process.
